Residents get fit with gym’s help A SURREY-based care home group and American fitness centre have teamed up to make fitness fun for residents restricted to their homes during the coronavirus pandemic. CHD Living and New York based Mark Fisher Fitness have been holding twice-weekly sessions focussed around mobility and meditation, aimed at keeping residents mentally and physically agile during isolation. The partnership, having been initially formed on a shortterm basis, has proven so popular amongst residents that it has been extended, with the virtual classes now being added to the activity calendars across CHD Living’s 13 care homes until the end of August. Shaleeza Hasham, head of hospitality and communications at CHD Living, said: “The sessions are incredibly fun and engaging, and the difference they have made to the mental and physical wellbeing of our residents has been wonderful to see.” Offering a wide range of activities from gentle seated exercises to strength, balance and breathing exercises,

the virtual classes have also provided the opportunity for residents to socialise and connect with residents from other CHD Living homes, as well as the instructors themselves who have led the sessions virtually from across the pond. Famed for its inclusive approach to exercise, Mark Fisher Fitness is passionate about providing an accepting, judgement-free environment for exercise to take place. With instructors regularly donning tutus and superhero capes, and clients affectionately coined ‘ninjas’, the New York gym has quickly become one of America’s most talked-about fitness centres. By injecting an element of performance art into classes and training sessions, Mark believes that much of the inherent self-consciousness from working out is removed, enabling clients to really commit to their exercise whilst having fun in the process. This eccentric approach has been fully incorporated into the CHD Living’s fitness sessions, with participating residents and carers encouraged to dress up in costumes for their workouts.

Team’s cycle raises £500 for charity

Residents at Laburnum Court in Salford enjoyed an afternoon of socially distanced entertainment during the coronavirus lockdown. Staff at the care home wanted something fun and enjoyable for their residents during this unprecedented time and arranged for entertainer and singer Carla Palmer to set up and play in the enclosed car park. While some residents watched the performance from the comfort of their own windows, a few who were able to joined team members outside to sing and dance along from a safe social distance. Everyone appreciated the party, clapping along, singing and dancing and enjoying the cakes and refreshments.

THE team at Gracewell of Camberley completed a charity cycle to raise money for the operator’s Good Samaritan Fund. They raised almost £500 by cycling a total distance of 1,600km on a stationary bike they set up in the care home’s bistro. The Gracewell Good Samaritan Fund was established in 2002 by the founders of Sunrise Senior Living (Gracewell’s parent company). It has been created to help team members of Sunrise Senior Living and Gracewell Healthcare who are suffering severe financial hardship resulting from a catastrophic event in their lives. The Camberley team embarked on their mission to ride 1,600km between them, while residents were able to watch and cheer them on. It took a week for them to hit their target. Jeorgia Jones, home admissions adviser at Gracewell of Camberley, said: “We wanted to raise money for this great cause and we are so happy we managed to cycle 1,000 miles as a team. “Residents cheering us on really uplifted the whole team in these challenging times. So many team members participated day and night and we are so grateful to them all. “This cycle challenge gave everyone a great release of endorphins through exercise and time to switch off and enjoy cycling for a fantastic cause.”
