The weekly online newsletter for the care sector
Colleagues expected to quit – claim BRITAIN faces a social care crisis with four in five care workers expecting colleagues to quit – with low pay being one of many factors amid the coronavirus danger, new research has found. The survey, conducted by Survation on behalf of GMB, shows 79 per cent of respondents thought it was likely the care sector would see staff shortages as people were unwilling to work at current levels of pay amid the increased risk posed by Covid19. Meanwhile, as thousands of NHS staff tests are deemed ‘not up to scratch’, it emerged 99 per cent of care staff have said they have not been tested. Other findings from the survey of more than 2,500 care workers include: n Almost three quarters (71 per cent) think colleagues will die after being infected at work. n One in five care home workers said they had considered quitting over the lack of PPE in their workplace. n Almost half (44 per cent) still haven’t got adequate PPE. n 85 per cent of those without adequate PPE feel their health is being put at risk. n 86 per cent are worried they
will pass Covid-19 on to their family or household. Rachel Harrison, GMB national officer, said: “Care workers are expected to keep our loved ones safe with inadequate protection, poverty wages and a pittance in sick pay if they get ill. “They’re terrified – not just for themselves, but for the people they look after and their families at home. “This isn’t just about money – care workers are so committed to the people they care for. But you have to ask yourself if you’d risk your life and the lives of your family for less than £9 an hour, some on no sick pay and not even the basic equipment to keep you safe – because that’s what we’re asking care workers to do right now. “Our care workers are fighting a war against this pandemic – that’s why GMB is calling for an active service payment and sick pay to be paid at the National Living Wage for all care workers.” GMB recently staged its first Facebook Live virtual rally for carers – recognising social care workers deserve more for their work and demand they get the PPE they need to protect them.
‘Hero’ Joe is nominated for award
Residents at a care home in Welshpool received a special visitor when a staff member turned up to work with an adorable, five-day-old lamb. Maintenance operative Andrew Whitmore works at Llys Hafren care home, which is operated on behalf of Powys County Council by Shaw healthcare. He borrowed the orphaned lamb from friend and local farmer Brian Ellis and, after checking in with the home manager, arranged to bring it in. Residents and colleagues were delighted to meet the special visitor, with many of them taking the opportunity to pet and even bottle-feed the cute creature as it made its way around the home. Care worker Pauline Hamer is pictured with the lamb.

A MEMBER of staff at a Warrington care home has been nominated in a regional initiative to acknowledge going ‘above and beyond’ during the coronavirus pandemic. Joe Ward, activity manager at Orchard Care Homes’ Green Park in Great Sankey, has been nominated as an everyday hero as part of the BBC’s North West Heroes recognition programme. Home manager Melisa Thompson said: “On behalf of all the staff and residents, we are extremely proud and grateful for all of Joe’s hard work and attention to detail. “He has gone above and beyond and thought of innovative ways to create positivity and promote a one-team ethic. This nomination truly recognises all the hard work that Joe has put into making sure residents are kept happy and entertained.” Joe and his team have been working tirelessly to keep up spirits in the home, making sure residents have smiles on their faces and getting them involved in fun activities around the home. From sourcing all sorts of goodies from the local community to creating a staff break area, the activities team has been busy and everyone at the home couldn’t be prouder. Joe added: “This is a lovely gesture, but not deserved by just me. The whole team is pulling together and being the Green Park Heroes that we need.”
