Home makes a splash with discount card A £9.5million care home under construction in Buckingham that is still months away from completion is already making a splash in the community with plans for a discount card to encourage staff to ‘shop local’.

The 62-bed Lace Hill Manor, part of the Maria Mallaband Care Group, which has more than 80 homes across the UK, is set to open next February, creating 70 new jobs.

In the run-up, home manager Paul Turvey, is pioneering a new discount card scheme, exclusive to the home, as part of the package of perks and benefits all new recruits can look forward to.

With the aim of supporting local businesses and building engagement with the community, Lace Hill Manor is reaching out to shops and service providers across the area to invite them to sign up for the scheme.

Paul said: “One of my key ambitions is for Lace Hill Manor to be outward-looking and for everyone living and working in the home to be truly connected and integrated with the fantastic local community in Buckingham.

“My policy is to work with local tradesmen, service providers and suppliers wherever I can, from window cleaners to local food producers, for everything

Lace Hill Manor needs – for example, I’ve already worked with a local company for the design and manufacture of our staff badges.

“But I’m also reaching out to local businesses to invite them to join our new discount card scheme.

“Not only do I want to encourage and enable staff from Lace Hill to shop locally, but I also want to forge partnerships and connections with businesses and play a part in helping this community thrive.”

Paul is already in talks with several local businesses and is open to all comers, from spas and gyms to cafes and restaurants, clothing shops to garages, with a special focus on independent businesses.

When it opens next year the new home will offer large en-suite rooms, some with private patios, lounges, restaurants, communal areas, landscaped gardens, and luxury facilities, including an orangery, fitness studio, leisure suite, wellness retreat, and bar and bistro area.

Paul is currently recruiting for care staff and nurses, as well as several service heads, including a head chef, a lifestyle coordinator, a maintenance manager, a concierge, a head housekeeper, dementia lead, and an administrator.

NICOLA Brooks, chair of the Board for dementia care specialists Belong, has been named Social Care Chairperson of the Year (North West England) at CEO Monthly’s Chairperson Awards.

Since being appointed over two years ago, Nicola’s biggest challenge to-date saw her continued passion for people development and human resources expertise help navigate Belong through the coronavirus crisis.

The organisation’s response was recognised when it achieved re-accreditation as a Gold Investors in People in the midst of the first wave when assessors praised “an empowering leadership style, high-quality communication and the positive impact of culture on resident outcomes achieved, so far, during Covid-19.”

She said: “I’m honoured to receive this award; it’s a privilege to work with the very dedicated and talented people in Belong and I look forward to building on the organisation’s continued success to enable more older people to live an active later life.”

Nicola’s remit has also included overseeing Belong’s plans to extend its provision of services to people in new locations.

Belong’s newest care village, set to open in Chester early next year, will include an integrated nursery provision, where children and older people can spend time together building meaningful relationships, making the setting the first of its kind in North West England.

From knitting poppies to attending community events, Colten Care residents – many of whom served in the armed forces or otherwise have wartime memories – have taken time to reflect on the poignant themes of sacrifice and service. At Brook View in West Moors, team members accompanied residents Ken Vivian and Jack Morey to the Dorset village’s commemoration on Remembrance Sunday. Watched in respectful silence by dozens of onlookers from various community groups who gathered for the event, Ken, 95, laid a wreath as a traditional symbol of remembrance for the fallen.

Young people from charity Kibble have paid tribute to veterans at Erskine with a special clay sculpture. Following a special assembly to mark Remembrance Day, the young people made their way to Erskine, a specialist care provider for Veterans in Scotland, with a large heart made from artificial grass. The heart was covered in red poppies sculped from clay that the young people have made within the classroom as a symbol of remembrance. A plaque positioned in the centre of the heart read ‘Lest We Forget’ with the sculpture set to be used for annual Remembrance Sunday service events in the coming years. The design was inspired by the artist Paul Cummings, who created the ceramic Poppy installation at Tower Bridge, with the young people keen to donate the artist piece to the nearby veterans.

Honouring Remembrance Day, residents of Rogers Housed decided to create a purple wreath this year to remember the animals who lost their lives at war. Each year the residents of the Wigmore care home make a poppy wreath to honour Remembrance Day and remember the lives of those we lost. This year they decided to remember the fallen animals of war too – an often-overlooked aspect. The residents crafted a large poppy wreath from small purple paper, which they displayed in the living room and gathered around when they held their two minutes’ silence of remembrance.

Hampton House in Solihull hosted a special arts and crafts activity for its residents in preparation for Remembrance Day. The independent living complex, which is managed by The Abbeyfield Society, invited community engagement manager Vicki Gillow to lead a creative session with the residents. Vicki helped them to put together a 3D poppy display made out of tissue paper, glue and card.

Care staff at The Sycamores Care Home in Hyde gathered in the main lounge with residents for a two-minute silence. Residents shared stories of serving in the army, while others spoke about their parents’ heroic service. Care home residents then watched a virtual show by Stormz Community, which combined historic videos and performances by singers including ‘The Poppy Girls’ and Dame Vera Lynn.

Veterans at Royal Star & Garter have commemorated Remembrance. At High Wycombe, Padre Flight Lieutenant Chrissie Lacey from RAF High Wycombe delivered the service, which also featured a bugler playing The Last Post and Reveille. In Solihull, residents painted poppies to decorate the Home, and took part in other Remembrance arts and crafts activities. Its Armistice Day service also featured music, readings, wreath-laying, and a standard bearer and bugler. At Surbiton, veterans made tissue paper poppies in the run-up to Remembrance, before paying their tributes at their Armistice Day service.

A public display of remembrance on the frontage of a Winchester dementia care home has been boosted by a community appeal. The cascade of nearly 800 knitted or crocheted poppies featured prominently outside Colten Care’s St Catherines View, providing a focal point for the home’s residents, staff, visitors and passers-by to reflect on. Laura Sheldrake, Companionship Team leader at the home, invited friends and contacts in the community to contribute their handiwork for what one resident’s daughter has described as a ‘moving and beautiful’ display.

The residents of the Moorgate Care Village in Rotherham had a reflective and respectful Armistice Day when they were visited by volunteers from the Royal British Legion. The home was given a personal remembrance service by the local Rotherham Royal British Legion. The Last Post was played, and a two-minute silence was held to allow the residents to honour lost loved ones from the Forces. The event was held at the home so that staff and residents who could not attend the Legion’s main service would not miss out on the community’s remembrance proceedings.

The Cleaning Show makes triumphant return to London

Operator commits to National Living Wage for frontline workers A CAMBRIDGESHIRE care and rehab community has committed to providing at least the National Living Wage for its frontline care workers as it seeks to remould perceptions of the industry – which is often portrayed as underpaid.

Askham Village Community, a specialist family-run care and rehabilitation community near Doddington, has unveiled the new package, which alongside a commitment to providing at least the National Living Wage for frontline care workers who have passed their probation, also includes a staff perks package that offers discounts at major retailers.

Director Aliyyah-Begum Nasser said: “Care is sometimes held up as an industry that fails to reward its staff for their hard work.

“Our commitment to providing at least the living wage for our frontline care workers though is testament to the value we place on our workforce and their incredible efforts.

“A fair wage for fair work should be a fundamental part of employment and this is something we’ll look to do going forward.”

The wage commitment will be funded directly by the organisation and family who are behind the 30-year second-generation business – and will cost more than £150,000 annually.

In addition to this, the staff perks package has seen Askham partner with Staff Treats to enable carers Residents transformed their care home into a Bavarian Steinhaus for an Oktoberfest celebration to remember – with the help from a local brewery.

Edinburgh-based brewer Pilot provided Cramond Residence with a selection of beers to sample during the celebration which helped create an authentic experience. The home marked the celebration across three days with a variety of German-related activities, including an Oktoberfest party, beer tasting, a lesson on the history of the festival and themed arts and crafts.

Residents made decorations which were used to transform the cinema room ahead of the party and many even got involved in the set up to make sure everything looked authentic.

“The inclusion of the perks package alongside our living wage commitment will also offer further financial assistance to our staff, thanks to reduced bills on groceries and other essentials.

“As an independent family-run business, we work closely with our care team and witness them provide quality care every day.

“Following the pandemic, we wanted to reward them for their courage, selflessness and determination in ensuring Askham continues to deliver the very best in person-centred care.

“Of course, we wish we could go further in our measures, but we have to be conscious we can only operate within the economics of the industry to ensure we remain sustainable.

“Hopefully though, following the reforms, there will be increased opportunity to give all those working in social care even greater recognition and rewards.”

THE UK’s largest and most important event in the cleaning and hygiene sector, The Cleaning Show, welcomed more than 4,600 visitors through its doors when it made its triumphant return to London, marking the industry’s first physical event since the UK’s national lockdown was lifted.

Event director Stuart Dacre said: “It’s been a long wait but I can’t describe how good it feels to bring the cleaning industry back face-to-face for three action-packed days of inspiration, innovation and insight.

“It’s been particularly special to recognise the efforts of cleaning and hygiene operators and the critical role they have played in keeping people and places safe over the past 18 months.

“The response from exhibitors and visitors has been overwhelming.

We’d like to thank everyone who has participated in this year’s show and look forward to opening our doors once again when we return to Manchester in 2022.”

Highlighting The Cleaning Show’s position as a hotbed of innovation, several exhibitors used the show’s return as the opportunity to announce new product launches.

For example, Killis revealed ‘Rex’ – a king-sized, autonomous cleaning robot targeting commercial and industrial settings, with complete remote handling while first-time exhibitor FogPod revealed its electrostatic devices that produce a ‘positively charged’ spray that binds to surfaces giving 360-degree coverage.

Elsewhere, ICE, the UK’s largest independent provider of cleaning equipment, introduced its handheld ICE Aquasmart Unit. Also demonstrating the industry’s most innovative and new technologies, The Cleaning & Support Services Association played host to the new CSSA Innovation Showcase – a pavilion dedicated to nine companies

selected by a panel of industry experts and representatives.

The insightful conference programme across the three days covered a wide range of topics from training to technology.

Opening the event, Nigel Mills MP, chair of the Cleaning and Hygiene AllParty Parliamentary Group, welcomed visitors and exhibitors, highlighting the important role the show plays in bringing the industry together to celebrate the sector and facilitate business.

Other highlights included James Lee, council member, Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers Association discussing sustainability and declaring that innovation alone wouldn’t solve the industry’s problems, while Darren Marston, executive chairman of ICE, delivered a session on the rise of co-bots and how autonomous cleaning can support and enhance current cleaning practices.

Plus, the Window Cleaning World Cup returned in partnership with the Federation of Window Cleaners, seeing 10 times Guinness World Record holder Terry ‘Turbo’ Burrows, be crowned the winner once again with a time of 14.37.

The Cleaning Show returns to Manchester Central from April 6-7.

Residents of Rogers House were overjoyed to welcome their network of volunteers back to the home. Many of the Wigmore care home’s volunteers have been visiting for several years and have developed strong friendships with the residents, so they were very much missed over the past 18 months. But, with everyone double vaccinated and restrictions eased, the group made their first visit back to the home for a morning of crafts.

Safeguarding lead in 30 under 30 list A SAFEGUARDING lead who was told she would never perform at the level of her peers has overcome adversity to earn a place on Lincolnshire’s 30 Under 30 List.

Emily Russell, 28, was one of more than 160 people nominated for the Lincolnite Award in recognition for her work with the not-for-profit housing provider Housing 21.

Despite the challenges posed by disabilities including Parkinsonism, Dystonia and Dyspraxia, Emily was named a recipient of the accolade for her commitment in putting Housing 21 residents first during the Covid19 pandemic, balancing full-time employment and education.

She said: “I was told I would always be years behind my peers academically and physically and would never ride a bike for instance.

“I was told I would have a menial job and probably would not do that for very long.

“However, I have always used my adversity to support alternative perspectives and have shown determination, working full time whilst studying full time.”

During 2020, Emily achieved a First Class degree in Health and Social Care and is continuing to develop by studying for a Level 7 qualification in Professional Development in Leadership and MA by Research in Health and Social Care with a focus on Adult Safeguarding lessons learned.

Throughout Safeguarding Week in November, Emily will deliver three webinars and has supported safeguarding champions in running local sessions with a total of 300 confirmed so far; amongst the highest for any housing provider.

Senior aircraftman prepares for her 105km charity run A SENIOR aircraftman from RAF High Wycombe is taking on a gruelling challenge to raise money for Royal Star & Garter.

SAC Jessica Webster will run 105km (65.2 miles) in 24 hours on a treadmill and nearby park, starting at 6am today (Wednesday).

She is hoping to raise £1,000 for Royal Star & Garter, a charity that provides loving, compassionate care to veterans living with disability or dementia, with Homes in High Wycombe, Solihull and Surbiton.

The 27-year-old’s father, grandfather and great-grandfather have all served in Army or RAF, and Jessica chose to raise money for Royal Star & Garter because of support it provides the country’s military family.

“I really love what they stand for and what they do,” she said. “I like the fact that they’ll be there for me in the future if ever I need them.”

The challenge will take place on a treadmill at the station’s gym hall, and on open space at nearby Walter’s Ash. Taking part in endurance challenges is nothing new to Jessica, who joined the RAF in 2017, but this is the most daunting.

She said: “I ran the 340km distance from RAF High Wycombe to Edinburgh, but that was over a onemonth period. So I think this will be

my toughest challenge.

“I know it’s going to get harder as I tire, and I imagine there will be a few tears. I know I’ll suffer and be in pain, but I’ll have a lot of support, and I’ll keep reminding myself of the end goal and why I’m doing it, so I’m confident I will complete it.”

First peek inside new luxury £12m facility in Droitwich Spa A NEW state-of-the-art care home in Droitwich Spa is getting set to open its doors for the first time.

Woodland View will provide a safe and luxurious home for up to 66 older people, employing more than 65 team members once fully staffed.

Home manager Cindy Hawkins said: “I am extremely excited to soon be able to open the doors of our beautiful home.

“Our future residents will benefit so much from our facilities and a full and varied social programme organised by our activities co-ordinators.

We have had such an overwhelming response so far from local people, for both the first phase of recruitment and from prospective residents.”

The spacious en-suite bedrooms and latest care technology will allow the care team to deliver personcentred care in a dignified manner, promoting independence as far as possible.
