The weekly online newsletter for the care sector

Homes take 30-day Wild Challenge A RECORD number of around 430,000 people have signed up to participate in The Wildlife Trusts’ 30 Days Wild Challenge which began on Monday – and more than 1,100 care homes have registered to take part, twice as many as last year. 30 Days Wild is the UK’s biggest nature challenge and encourages everyone to do something that connects them to nature every single day during the month of June. The Wildlife Trusts provide free online activity packs to help participants of all ages find new, easy ways of noticing nature – even while social distancing. Special resources are available for care home residents to help them enjoy their grounds; these were developed after a Derbyshire operator discovered significant benefits when its residents’ lives included more time outdoors, looking at and talking about nature and wildlife. Another pack has been created to help elderly people explore their wild side from the comfort of their own homes. Leanne Manchester, communications manager of The Wildlife Trusts, added: “30 Days Wild is fun for all ages and we provide ideas and

activities for people whatever their circumstances – for individuals, families, schools and businesses. “Last year we experimented with an activity pack for care homes and we were really delighted that a large number were interested. “So many of us are seeking solace in nature during the pandemic but even we were surprised – and thrilled – that double the number of care homes have signed up to do 30 Days Wild this June. “We have also developed a new guide to going wild for people supporting elderly relatives at home – to help them experience the wild, even if they’re stuck indoors. 30 Days Wild helps people get closer to nature and enjoy the small, everyday things.” Recent research shows that taking part in 30 Days Wild not only significantly increases people’s happiness, health and sense of nature – but that these positive increases are sustained beyond the life of the challenge – for a minimum of two months after it is over. The people who benefit most are those who have a relatively weak connection with nature at the start.

A Somerset teenager has pledged to skip for 20 minutes straight every day for a month to raise money for Brunelcare, a charity supporting older people in the South West. James Byrne, 16, will skip every day for 20 minutes until June 11, tallying a total of 10 hours and 20 minutes of skipping. He said: “I wanted to do something to keep busy during these uncertain times, all while making a difference. I know skipping is a great form of exercise, so I married the two together. I’ll skip for 20 minutes, non-stop, daily, to raise money for the charity.” James chose to raise money for Brunelcare’s Glastonbury Care Home as his late Grandmother, Ivy Byrne, was a resident there for nearly two years. He added: “I saw what an amazing job the carers at Brunelcare were doing, and now, wanting to support key workers more than ever, I couldn’t think of a better cause or better time to start skipping.” James wants to raise a total of £3,000 for the charity to buy personal protective equipment and wellbeing supplies to be used around the home.

BIDDING has begun on a sculpture of Colonel Tom Moore made entirely from nails. The sculpture, which was made over 15 days by hammering 50,000 nails into a 40 x 60cm board, was created by Marcus Levine, whose studio is based in Keighley. Colonel Tom Moore, known fondly by the nation as Captain Tom, made international headlines in April after raising £32.8m for the NHS by walking laps around his garden on his 100th birthday. The sculpture of Colonel Tom is now being auctioned by Tennants Auctioneers, with bids open until 11am on June 10. There are hopes the portraits could attract bids into the thousands, with £10,000 already pledged. All proceeds from the sale will be evenly split between The Care Workers’ Charity and NHS Charities Together. A limited run of 15 prints of the sculpture have also been made available for £275 each. All funds raised from the sale of the prints will be donated to The Care Workers’ Charity. The nail sculpture was commissioned by Tim Lockett from Deliver Net (a Skipton based PPE distribution company), who wanted to draw people’s attention to the heroic sacrifices that care workers are making during the current Coronavirus pandemic.
