Community is invited to send in cards A HITCHIN care home is inviting the local community to send in words of kindness in the form of cards, letters, or poems for its residents to mark World Kindness Day. Whether it’s schools, businesses, or anyone living in the Hitchin area, Foxholes Care Home is inviting people to send in cards for the residents at the home as an act of kindness ahead of World Kindness Day on Friday, November 13. Since March, residents at Foxholes have had to deal with very limited visitation from close family and friends due to the coronavirus pandemic, and with tougher lockdown restrictions being announced to help curb the virus as nationwide cases continue to rise, it looks set to be a tough winter ahead. In a bid to show residents that the local Hitchin community are with them through this difficult time, Foxholes is inviting the town’s citizens, from children to adults, and loved ones of residents, to send in kindness cards to maintain morale and show solidarity. Adhering to the government’s stringent infection control protocols, the cards will be quarantined on arrival to the home until World Kindness Day. People can also email cards

to the home, where they can get creative by choosing to either design the card online, or by hand and then scanning/ uploading a picture of the card to then email to Foxholes. Neil Gandecha, estate manager at Foxholes Care Home, said: “Whether it’s a drawing, a poem, a letter, or even just sharing a few words of kindness, we’re inviting the community to give our residents something to smile about on World Kindness Day. “Unfortunately, as much as we’d like to have residents spending time with friends and family at the home, the situation our country is currently in won’t allow us to, so it’s little initiatives like sending in cards that can have such a huge impact on someone’s day. “Hitchin is a close community where everyone looks out for one another, so we’re sure at a time when people may feel disconnected due to social distancing and self-isolation, we can show we are still very much in this together.” Anyone wishing to send a kindness card to Foxholes can do so by emailing info@ foxholescarehome.com, or sending them to Foxholes Care Home, Pirton Road, Hitchin, SG5 2EN, clearly addressing ‘World Kindness Day’ on the envelope.

Provider to embark on new project

Residents at Dene Holm Residential Care Home in Northfleet tried their hand at flower arranging, courtesy of their local Morrisons store. They were spoilt for choice with which flowers to use in their displays. Activity coordinator Lea-Ann Shaw said: “I put a post on Facebook asking if any local florists had any flowers that were likely to be thrown away, as we can often use those with a short date in our flower arranging activities. I was absolutely over the moon when Chris stopped by with endless bouquets of gorgeous flowers, there were so many, and they were all still lovely and fresh. It was very kind of them and the residents were thrilled, so we’d like to say a big thank you.”

BOROUGH Care has embarked on a ground-breaking project with Community Catalysts. The not-for-profit provider of care for older people in Stockport will be collaborating with the social enterprise to create a new way for residents and their families to give feedback on its services. There will also be the opportunity for them to be directly involved in shaping the care offered by Borough Care in the future. Dr Mark Ward, chief executive officer at Borough Care, said: “We are excited to be developing new ways to work even more closely with the people we serve and be even more connected to our local community.” A new part-time role has been created and the person employed will work closely with residents and their families to develop ideas and suggestions, as well as giving feedback on what Borough Care does now and its future direction. The residents and their families will be able to communicate directly to the Borough Care Board, to ensure their input informs the company’s strategy. Angela Catley, director of development at Community Catalysts, added: “We know this project is ground-breaking and creative so we’re excited to be part of it. “We are really looking forward to working with Borough Care, the people it supports and their families, to learn, create and develop new ways of working together.”
