Residents given chance to learn a new language

PENSIONERS at an Edinburgh care residence are being offered the opportunity to learn a new skill thanks to the home’s newest recruit.

Since joining Cramond, Garylee Rushforth from Dunfermline has already made his mark by introducing a selection of language classes.

The 34-year-old has drawn on his knowledge from living in a selection of European cities and speaks fluent German, Polish and is currently learning Scottish Gaelic.

Garylee has worked in the sector for more than six years and most recently played a key role in planning and delivering meaningful activities for patients at an acute dementia unit in the Royal Edinburgh Hospital.

He said: “My aim is to bring a structured approach to the way activities at Cramond are planned, led and delivered, ensuring that each activity contributes to each resident’s care plan while also being fun.

“My first six weeks have been a whirlwind. Cramond is a great place to work with lots of opportunities to develop my skills, share my experience and play a part in the wider care of our residents.

“As I’ve lived in a selection of countries, I know how fun it is to learn new languages and this is a passion and skill of mine that I really felt like I could bring to the table in my new role.

“The addition of language classes into the activities rota will be highly beneficial for the residents.

“Cramond is one of the very few care homes that really does structure itself around its residents’ wishes and needs.

“Emphasis is placed on ensuring residents are given the opportunity to input, consult on and determine the direction of all aspects of their care.”

Amongst other therapeutic and managerial roles, Garylee previously worked for the NHS where he delivered cognitive behavioural therapy to patients across the region, with particular focus on mental health and addiction.

He added: “The highlight of my time here so far has been seeing residents who would not normally engage in certain activities do so through relationship building, encouragement and measured and supported risk-taking.

“You just can’t beat seeing a resident come alive with emotion and energy after taking part in an activity that we have organised for them.”

Garylee will be contributing to activities and excursions rota, which will see a pizza making masterclass, beer and gin samplings and a trip to the Living Memory shop in Ocean Terminal.

Cramond Residence offers care for up to 74 residents.

Residents at a Cambridgeshire care home have been showing I’m a Celebrity contestants how it should be done. People living at Dove Court in Wisbech have got close up and personal with a whole bunch of critters thanks to a visit by Zoolab. Home manager Nicole Thompson, said: “Our residents have been showing the celebrities in the jungle how it’s done. They didn’t bat an eye lid when they came face to face with a host of reptiles and giant spiders. Before the pandemic our Dove Court family enjoyed regular visits from Zoolab and this was a very welcome return of these different, but brilliant, pet therapy sessions. This visit reflects the vibrant and extensive activities programme we have here to suit the residents’ wide-ranging interests and hobbies.”

Last chance to grab your tickets

The deadline for tickets for the industry’s biggest end-of-year party is 10am on Friday.

Organised by Script Media in partnership with Caring UK and headline sponsor Virgin Money, the annual Caring UK Awards culminate in a glittering ceremony – taking place at the Athena in Leicester on Thursday December 1 – where host Dean Andrews from Emmerdale and Life on Mars will reveal the lucky winners who will take home an award.

We received a record number of entries from all over the UK with so many stories of the wonderful work that was done particularly during the pandemic and we want to thank everyone who sent in

nominations.

Shortlisted entries from far and wide have made the finals, now progressing to the next stage of the judging process.

Event organiser Dominic Musgrave added: “We have been amazed by the incredible work that has taken and is continuing to take place in homes nationwide, and the last two-and-a-half years has only confirmed to us just how wonderful care staff truly are.

“Once again we were overwhelmed with the standard of entries we received from homes up and down the country. We can’t wait to celebrate with everyone at the awards on December 1.”

What Makes a Care Business Successful?

Is it because of a ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ rating from CQC? Is it because of high occupancy or high weekly hours? Or maybe it’s due to a healthy staff culture?

Most people who have run or managed a care business know that any one of these components by itself isn’t the answer.

You’ll understand that all the different parts of a care business such as compliance, care delivery, HR, marketing and finance, must function together seamlessly, to create success and balance for the long-term. The Care Ideals team have been in your shoes and know it as well.

We’ll work with you to achieve balance and growth in all areas. Our support will help create a care business that delivers exceptional care, is operationally sound and also profitable.

Our unique and innovative One Stop Shop approach simultaneously addresses every aspect of your care business. It saves you time and makes your life easier, as you only have to deal with one supplier for all these many needs.

This ensures that your business is managed successfully, leaving you and your team to deliver exceptional care.

All these benefits, all from one place and all the time!

We offer three different levels of support and we’re happy to discuss which will be most suitable for your specific requirements.

Providing the balance between good business and exceptional care

EVERMORE Care joined forces with local school children to put together a time capsule to be placed in its new state-of-the-art care home due to open in Chorley early next year.

Commemorating 2022, the idea of putting a time capsule in the new home came after the success of the Queen’s Jubilee event hosted in June at the operator’s Ashton Manor home in Lancaster.

At the Jubilee event, residents and their families celebrated Queen Elizabeth’s 70 years on the throne by bringing together memorabilia of times past.

With the sad passing of Her Majesty the Queen, preparing a time capsule for the new home had even greater significance as a moment that will be remembered for many years to come.

With the construction of the new home well underway, the team at Evermore Care felt it was the perfect opportunity to bring together local school children to create a time capsule. To mark the event, children from St. Peter’s Church of England school in Chorley were invited to bring their own items that represent the here and now.

The event took place on the new Astley View site where the children were treated to a walk through the construction site and enjoyed a talk

about the home which is the first to be built in Chorley in more than 10 years.

Director Gaye Clark said: “We value the opportunity to bring people in our community together. These moments are precious, and they bring joy to everyone involved.”

“I’m really proud of the work we do here at Evermore and I’m excited to watch our vision for Astley View emerge from the construction site.

“We know from our experience at Ashton Manor that this home will help transform the lives of the future residents.

“The time capsule has been placed in an old curiosity shop within the home, which gives residents opportunities to reminisce about significant events in the past – an activity that can really support those with dementia.”

The Chorley home will be a luxury, state-of-the-art facility with a strong focus on wellbeing and lifestyle.

The 90 spacious bedrooms are equipped with Wi-Fi, a smart TV, acoustic monitoring, and a circadian lighting system to ensure the comfort and safety of the residents.

The exciting market street concept within the home allows residents to visit the cinema, shops, beauty salon, café and even ice cream parlour.

Charities thank home for staging ‘happy hoedown’

TWO New Forest charities have thanked a New Milton care home for staging a country and westernthemed fundraising party.

Residents and team members at Colten Care’s Kingfishers donned cowboy hats, jeans, bandanas and checked tops to say a side-slapping ‘yee haw’ to guests.

Companionship team leader Rose Arcellana said: “Our residents really love country music and were only too pleased to have fun and help raise money for two great causes at the same time. The whole event went down really well – it was truly a happy hoedown.”

The ‘happy hoedown’, which featured a barbecue, dancing and live music from duo Sweet Harmony, was

in aid of Lymington-based hospice charity Oakhaven and the inclusive New Forest cycling group PedAll.

A total of £461.50 was raised through donations at the event, split evenly between the two organisations.

STAFF members at RMBI Care Co. Home Barford Court in Hove took part in an innovative training programme called Experiential Learning.

Through this induction, staff had the opportunity to experience firsthand what it might feel like to be a resident and receive personal care and support whilst living in a care home.

Staff experience firsthand what it feels like to be a resident School places time capsule in home

Louise Bateman, group human resources director at RMBI Care Co., said: “Learning through experience can be very powerful; this programme has become a vital tool in supporting new staff members to empathise with residents and to care with compassion.

“We want to ensure that we recruit individuals not solely upon their technical skills or abilities, but on the basis of their values and attitudes to care.”

Staff were presented with various challenges, such as wearing a wet incontinence pad throughout the training session and assisting each other with personal hygiene (washing face and neck.)

The activities were carried out twice to demonstrate poor and good practices. The aim was to help give them a better understanding of how residents should be cared for, and develop a greater sense of empathy in their roles.

Nora Haines, Barford Court’s training manager, said: “All staff at our Home, at every level, have been through this training. It’s part of our induction process.

“We feel it makes such a difference when we get to experience being in the residents’ shoes, rather than to read or hear about it. It really emphasises staff’s understanding of

Residents at Camilla House in Fife channelled their inner Da Vinci as the home trialled a new programme of artistic activities to engage residents. Residents tapped into their creative sides during the recent initiative and hosted a memorable gathering for friends and family to showcase their artistic talent. A local visual artist led the group in a variety of artistic endeavours, including flower mandalas and watercolour paintings. Residents were able to enjoy using a number of materials and their work is now proudly on display within the home. Camilla House, which is part of the Holmes Care group, arranged the art programme as part of its mission to provide residents with opportunities to stay happy and healthy.

all individuals’ needs.”

As part of the training session, staff members also took part in a variety of scenarios, such as:

n Being pushed in a wheelchair with artificially impaired vision.

n Being supported to eat a meal by another trainee.

n Having their face and neck washed by another trainee.

n Being left on their own in an empty room whilst unable to move from their chair.

The programme was first launched in 2014 and has been refined and expanded with different scenarios in recent years.

Ricky Freeman, one of Barford Court’s activities coordinators, added: “This training was eye opening and really helped me empathise more with residents. It was good to help changing perspectives and to experience what is like to be a resident.”

Group recognised for its outstanding workplace training programme

CARING Homes, an independent national network of residential, nursing and dementia care homes, is celebrating after receiving a Princess Royal Training Award.

Now in its seventh year, The Princess Royal Training Awards continues to recognise organisations demonstrating exceptional commitment to learning and development.

Alongside 46 other organisations, the operator was recognised for its ongoing commitment to training and the positive impact that developing colleagues have had on the wider organisation.

Caring Homes was recognised by the Awards back in 2016 for its Living in My World Dementia Programme which aims to enhance the delivery of care to residents with dementia.

Since then, the training programme has been developed to become a widely recognised brand in the business.

Liz Willis, director of learning and organisational development at Caring Homes, said: “The ‘My World Dementia Training Programme’ is making a positive difference to the lives of people living with dementia, their families and the dedicated colleagues who support them.

“This training is delivered nationwide across our care homes, with very positive feedback from the wider care industry, colleagues, and the families we support. The course has also been formally accredited by City & Guilds.

“The training reassures relatives and residents that our colleagues have the expertise of a consistently high standard that is based around best practice, and offers a great career development journey, providing a clearly signposted training route to enhance their skill set in dementia care”.

To date more than 5,000 colleagues have been through the programme since its establishment, 83 per cent have completed training and a new ‘Dementia Ambassador’ role has been created.

Helena Jeffery, founder and director at Caring Homes, added: “We are so proud to have been recognised once more by the Princess Royal Training Award.

“One of the most rewarding aspects is improving lives by supporting residents and their families. We firmly believe that supporting and developing the team is also very important, as this enhances our residents’ lives and drives outstanding care.

“We train every member of our team so that residents, families, and their carers can be surrounded by personalised support.

“From our receptionists to our chefs, and carers to our nurses, the entire team receive our unique award-winning ‘Living in My World’ dementia training. It is also accredited by City and Guilds, so you can trust that we go above and beyond for our colleagues and residents.”

Group paints picture of the importance of arts in care settings

FROM painting pictures and shaping sculptures to musical moments and thought-provoking theatre, older people at Belong happily enjoy the arts as part of their everyday experiences in the dementia specialist’s care.

The residents have now been embracing the latest initiative, making new creations to mark the National Day of Arts in Care Homes.

For this year’s ‘Field of Flowers’ theme, those residing in the not-forprofit organisation’s villages have been supported to express their ideas in a number of different ways.

Whilst some customers have been collaborating to make their town’s biggest-ever floral display wall piece, others invited their families and communities to bring an ambitious display of thousands of floral fingerprints to fruition.

Another took the opportunity to pay their last respects by creating collages in tribute to Her late Majesty The Queen. Local schoolchildren have also been welcomed for intergenerational partnerships for the occasion.

Belong chief operating officer Sue Goldsmith said: “The arts form a big part of our experience programme for our customers.

“The advantages of using creative expression for meaningful occupation is that everyone can take part, whatever their ability, and it provides sensory-rich experiences with a sense of purpose and achievement for the creator.”

Promoted by the National Activity Providers Association, the National Day of Arts in Care Homes is funded by The Baring Foundation and The Rayne Foundation, and is designed to encourage and champion arts engagement in care settings, highlighting the wellbeing benefits for all involved.

The initiative complements Belong’s care strategy, advocating an active later life for its customers, which also includes health and fitness planning with in-house exercise specialists, and opportunities to network with schools and businesses and be involved in community projects and events.

Its ongoing four-year relationship with Bluecoat, Liverpool’s contemporary arts centre, for example, has seen a number of positive wellbeing outcomes recognised by academics as renowned artists work alongside Belong’s customers in their homes.

Sue added: “Though the arts are already well-embedded in our approach to care, we’ve enjoyed having the opportunity to share in this national event and our customers loved bringing this year’s theme to life.

“Whether it’s the engagement in an activity, the pleasure of watching a performer, or the sharing of creative ideas with schoolchildren, we know that the arts play an important role in enhancing lives by increasing selfesteem and engendering a strong sense of belonging.”

Residents take centre stage at home

RESIDENTS strapped on their dancing shoes and warmed up their vocal cords in anticipation of an Edinburgh care home’s talent show. ‘Cramond’s Got Talent’ was the latest addition to the home’s activities rota, with the aim of encouraging residents to lead fun and fulfilling lives. Several residents and staff members took centre stage to

perform in front of a judging panel which consisted of six residents.

The idea for Cramond’s Got Talent came from one of the home’s lifestyle coordinator’s, Garylee Rushforth.

Performances included tributes to bands such as ABBA, whilst one resident showcased traditional Spanish dancing and another performed a piano symphony.

Home’s garden gets substantial overhaul

RESIDENTS and staff at Care

South’s Buxton House care home in Weymouth are rejoicing after its garden received a makeover.

A revamp has seen the grounds transform into a tranquil space for residents to enjoy all year round.

Rachel Sohorye, peripatetic home manager at Buxton House, said: “Residents in our care have been excitedly following the renovation work in the garden.

“The outdoor space was in

desperate need of some TLC, but now thanks to the investment we have a wonderful outdoor space for residents to enjoy along with their visiting family and friends.

“They were so excited to get outside and explore our new garden, their smiles say it all.

“Access to outdoor space is important for us all, not least our elderly residents and those living with dementia who need safe, tranquil environments. Being able

to move around can help reduce tension and anxiety, whilst colour, touch and scent all help to calm and ground residents.

“Spending time in the great outdoors can also help awaken happy memories for residents. This new garden will be a hugely important addition to our home.”

As part of the refurbishment, the courtyard and sensory garden have been transformed. There are now three different patio areas across the

sensory garden, providing plenty of seating areas for residents to relax in. A new pergola provides a shady walkway with bench seating.

There’s also a water feature and raised aquarium, accessible to all residents, including wheelchair users, which creates a soothing, quiet space for calm and reflection.

A potting shed has been installed, along with raised planters so residents can get their hands dirty and indulge in a spot of gardening.

This Christmas, we want people to feel connected and to have the opportunity to share happy memories.
