The weekly online newsletter for the care sector

NCF launches project with NHS Digital A NEW project launched by the National Care Forum with funding from NHS Digital’s Digital Pathfinders Programme will help providers understand the benefits of technology, how to build a business case for investment, and how to successfully introduce, use and evaluate technology. The Hubble Project offers senior decision makers the chance to virtually visit ‘innovation hubs’ (via webinar) to learn how other care providers have introduced, used and evaluated digital technology to improve care. The sessions cover a wide range of technology so that they will be of value to all care providers, regardless of where they are on the digital journey. Vic Rayner, chief executive of NCF said: “Many care providers want to progress along their digital journey – but they feel they don’t have the knowledge or confidence to make what can be big decisions about investment and implementation in technology. “Being able to learn from colleagues who have been there and done that can overcome some of those concerns. These are wartsand-all sessions, where care providers will share the lessons they have learned. Our virtual visitors will also have access to

a wide range of resources after the visits, including a toolkit to support building a business case, getting buy in, and implementation. “And the tech suppliers featured during the sessions are also offering participants a time-limited reduction on the cost of their technology.” The hubs are based in three care settings in England and showcase a range of technologies which include electronic care planning, eMAR, acoustic monitoring, circadian lighting, sensor technology and telecare. Through a mixture of prerecorded content and live Q&A, managers and staff will demonstrate the technology that they use, and share their digital journey, including how they came to adopt it, the challenges and the benefits of implementing and using it, and the use of data to improve the quality of care. The virtual visit sessions will take place between September and December. They are aimed at decision makers within residential, home care and housing providers. The session hosted by Johnnie Johnson Housing will be of particular interest to housing associations, retirement communities and home care providers.

Specialist invests in new suite

Aspen Grange care home in Braintree has used the UK’s lockdown to develop a love of gardening and vegetable growing among its residents. The care home regularly looks for interesting and creative ways to keep service users entertained, and throughout the period of restricted visits has managed to introduce residents to a range of new hobbies. One of the new favourite activities amongst residents at Aspen Grange is vegetable growing. Over recent weeks, staff at the home have been encouraging residents to engage in a range of gardening-themed tasks. As part of the new programme, they have been planting a variety of plants and vegetables in the home’s vegetable patch, an area which includes a range of easily accessible planters and troughs for residents at the home to use. n Resident Norman Montague is pictured showing off some of the home’s produce.

HARROGATE-based Vida Healthcare has launched a Controlled Admissions Suite to enable the protection of new residents and the wider community at the specialist dementia care provider. Launched at Vida Grange, the admissions suite can hold up to 10 residents at any one time and has a permanent team of six staff members offering round-the-clock care. The initiative has been created in response to the Covid-19 crisis and will be kept in place until it’s deemed safe enough to return to normal admissions processes. Vida Healthcare developed the suite to enable new residents to be admitted to its homes without jeopardising the health of current residents and staff. New residents are tested for Covid-19 prior to arriving, and are then cared for in the suite before being transferred to their dedicated house once the quarantine period has been completed. Bernadette Mossman, healthcare director at Vida Healthcare, said: “It was key for us to develop an initiative which enabled us to pick back up with our admissions process, and offer high quality care to more vulnerable people. “We’re fortunate, due to the design of our building, that we’ve been able to launch our Controlled Admissions Suite to welcome new guests and reassure their families. “This allows us to closely manage new admissions.”
