Village offers helping hand to refugees KIND-hearted residents at a Didsbury-based care village founded by a Jewish First World War refugee are lending a helping hand to refugees by donating aid to those arriving in the UK. Moved by the plight of those fleeing Afghanistan as the Taliban retakes control of the war-torn country, members of the Belong Morris Feinmann community have donated 70 toiletry bags, accompanied by messages of personal support. The donation efforts are being led by Care4Calais, a volunteer-run charity, working with refugees in the UK, as well as France and Belgium. The UK Government has pledged to welcome around 20,000 people through a resettlement scheme. Belong Morris Feinmann residents and colleagues have also extended their generosity by donating clothing and footwear to Afghans in need, in another effort being led by Bowdon Shul, South Manchester Synagogue, for which the village has an extensive relationship. Angela Luckett, experience coordinator at Belong Morris Feinmann, is coordinating the village’s contributions. She said: “Our village’s foundations lie in the support of refugees, originally set-up to help Jews fleeing persecution

in Europe, and so, as soon as we heard about the awful situation in Afghanistan, we felt compelled to do something to help.” Morris Feinmann, a Jewish refugee who had fled Eastern Europe in WWI, dedicated his life to supporting Jews fleeing Nazi persecution in the Second World War, including founding a guarantee scheme to enable German Jews to escape from the country and settle in Manchester. His groundwork eventually led to the Manchester Jewish Refugee Committee purchasing a house for those in need. In 2017, the home was remodelled as a state-of-theart care village by dementia care specialist, Belong, who operate the setting, working closely with the trust to maintain its Jewish ethos and culture for residents from the Jewish community. Care provision has now been widened to include those of all faiths, whilst continuing to observe and celebrate the Jewish way-of-life, notably, with an on-site kosher bistro, synagogue and Holocaust memorial garden. Angela added: “For many of our residents, seeing the news in Asia has been deeply moving – some are refugees themselves and so their contributions are all the more personal.”

Operator takes to the beach

Two Winchester care homes came together to stage a late summer fete in aid of a charity that helps older people in the community to live well. Colten Care’s Abbotts Barton and St Catherines View jointly raised £1,020.18 for MHA Communities Winchester. The family-friendly event was held on the green just yards from Abbotts Barton and featured live music, children’s games, hot food, cakes, tombola and a sale of plants arranged by residents of both homes. Both homes chose MHA Communities Winchester as their main cause to support over the past year. Even before the festival they had raised more than £1,800 for the charity despite community events being constrained by lockdown. Among the guests at the fete was the Mayor of Winchester, Councillor Vivian Achwal.

BLUEBIRD Care Mid Essex brought the beach to their customers, staff and their families in the style of a seaside afternoon tea party to mark the end of social distancing restrictions. The homecare provider hosted 94 guests to enjoy a beach themed party filled with cakes, drinks, sandwiches, biscuits and seaside decorations. Bluebird Care Mid Essex also organised the transportation of some customers to the party to ensure they could take part in the merriments. After a welcoming toast by manager Julia Mills, guests enjoyed afternoon tea whilst listening to music from previous eras, including Frank Sinatra, Doris Day and Vera Lynn. A free raffle draw followed, before a competitive but good spirited game of bingo played out among guests. Julia said: “The beach party was a wonderful opportunity to bring staff, customers and family members together after such a difficult 18 months. “The day was well organised and thought out, allowing everyone to buy into the occasion. It wouldn’t have been possible without the great staff we have at Bluebird Care Mid Essex. We’re now really looking forward to the next event at Christmas.” It wouldn’t be a trip to the seaside without a ’99 Flake’, and Bluebird Care Mid Essex arranged a complimentary ice cream van to also be in attendance.
