Bid to introduce student nurses into social care SKILLS for Care has launched new ‘How to make the most of student nurse placements’ guidance to support and promote student nursing placements within social care.

The new guidance, funded by Health Education England, is aimed at supporting student nurse placements in social care settings to benefit students, employers, higher education providers, and people who need care and support.

The guidance highlights the value of social care placements for nursing students outlining the key learnings and experience which nursing students can gain from a placement in social care.

It will also better prepare employers to offer supported and quality experiences for student nurses, and is a quick and easy way to see the experience that their setting can offer to a student nurse and how it maps to the nursing curriculum. The guidance also intends to encourage higher education providers to promote placements in social care settings.

Skills for Care CEO Oonagh Smyth, pictured, said: “The information in this new ‘How to make the most of student nurse placements’ guidance will make a real difference in getting more student nurses to do their placement in social care.

“We know that nurses who work in social care find the roles rewarding. They need to be adaptable, flexible, and committed to providing excellent personcentred care where they can build

deep relationships as well as supporting people’s clinical needs.

“We will continue to support the social care nursing workforce by doing everything we can to show student nurses why they should all want to come and work in social care.”

Included in the guide is an introduction to what social care is, the learning opportunities available to student nurses in social care, case studies of how student nurse placements can work in different settings, and real insights of what the people who student nurses support want them to know.

The guide includes 10 templates outlining how a student nurse placement can work in different social care settings, including home care, day care, and various residential care settings.

A key goal of the new guidance is to improve understanding and awareness for students, employers, and higher education providers about the role of nursing in social care, and to encourage more student nurses to consider a career in the sector.

The guide will also increase awareness and understanding of this career choice for students that will help to accelerate the growth of the social care nursing workforce in future.

The guide is available to download in PDF format from the Skills for Care website. The guidance can be downloaded as one full guide or with the option to download each template as a separate PDF document.

Awards’ tickets in demand

TICKETS are selling fast for the industry’s biggest end-of-year party, with plans in place to make this year’s Caring UK Awards the best one yet.

Nominations for the 2021 awards are now closed and the full shortlist is on the Caring UK website.

Organised by Script Media in partnership with Caring UK and headline sponsor Virgin Money, this annual celebration of success will culminate in a glittering ceremony – taking place at the Athena in Leicester on Thursday December 2 – where host Dean Andrews from Emmerdale will reveal the lucky winners who will take home an award.

We received a record number of entries from all over the UK with so many stories of the wonderful work that was done particularly during the pandemic and we want to thank everyone who sent in nominations.

Shortlisted entries from far and wide have made the finals, now progressing to the next stage of the judging process.

Event director Judith Halkerston added: “We have been amazed by the incredible work that has taken and is continuing to take place in homes nationwide, and the last 18 months has only confirmed to us just how wonderful care staff truly are. Once again we were overwhelmed with the standard of entries we received from homes up and down the country. We can’t wait to celebrate with everyone at the awards on December 2.”

Kelly promotes unique pathway into nursing A TRAINEE Nurse Associate at Belong Atherton is urging more young people to consider less conventional routes into a nursing career.

Kelly Haddock is at the half-way point of her unique pathway into nursing: an apprentice foundation degree programme offered by Belong in conjunction with the University of Salford and affording practical nursing experience outside of hospital settings.

She said: “There are an increasing number of new training options being created for people, who like me, discover their nursing vocation later on in their career.

“I’ve been able to build on my experience as a support worker and, once the foundation degree is complete, I’ll be able to work towards a becoming a registered nurse.”

As a Trainee Nursing Associate, Kelly works in the dementia care specialist’s nursing team, supporting the needs of Belong residents, while receiving extensive training and gaining the clinical knowledge and

experience required for nursing associate status.

Whereas on the traditional routes into the nursing profession, trainees often gain their practical experience in hospital settings, the programme gives students the opportunity to work in all fields of nursing: adult, mental health, children’s, and learning disability, meaning it is designed to be tailored to any area of the profession. By working in adult social care at Belong, Kelly is provided the chance to look after older people, including those living with dementia, as part of her training.

Kelly began her care career over a decade ago, initially working in the catering team at the care village, before being inspired to train as a carer, climbing the ranks to lead senior support worker, heading-up a night team of 24 colleagues.

Notably, her supportive nature shone throne through when she was named ‘Mentor of the Year’ at Belong’s Champion Awards 2020, which recognise colleagues who have made an exceptional

contribution to village life.

The apprenticeship role is relatively new to social and primary care and is currently being piloted in care settings with nursing provision, as well as GP surgeries.

Led by University of Salford and regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, the training posts are offered at Belong Atherton and Belong Wigan, which were selected to administer the workbased assessment based on an extensive relationship with the university, their track record in developing nurses, as well as top credentials including ‘Outstanding’ CQC ratings and the ‘Gold’ Investors in People accreditation.

Kelly added: “I’m so happy and very thankful that Belong is championing this new Trainee Nursing Associate role; it’s the best of both worlds, studying alongside working at the village.

“I previously studied at university but had no idea what my long-term career would look like and Belong has provided me with a career for life.”

apetito’s new and improved ‘apetiser’ takes centre stage at The Care Show

PRIZE pooches were on parade as a Dorset care home held a charity dog show.

Colten Care’s Brook View in West Moors staged the event as a fun experience for residents and to raise funds to help disabled people in the community.

Staff and residents’ families were invited to bring their pets along to enter classes such as Loveliest Lady, Most Fabulous Fella and Waggiest Tail.

To help with the judging, team members invited dog lover and resident Patricia Upshall to cast her expert eye over the competitors.

Among them was Ellie the greyhound, Brook View’s new Pets as Therapy dog.

Brook View’s Companionship team leader Sarah Moule said: “Our last community dog show was a couple of years ago and we have been so keen to welcome back such happy, family-friendly events.

“Our residents love dogs. They really help to bring joy and company to people.”

The show was held in support of The Friends of Dolphin, a charity that provides free boat rides from Poole Harbour for people with disabilities.

The NEC was buzzing as it opened its doors for The Care Show on 13th and 14th October. For those from the industry it was a welcome opportunity to finally get out and see people after months of virtual meetings and, for exhibitors, it was the chance to showcase their latest innovations.

The leading name in meals for care homes, apetito, took two stands this year; one to create an impressive immersive dining experience for visitors with the launch of its worldfirst Finger Food Bites; the second a specially built mobile presentation unit, dubbed the apetiser, from which it served a variety of delicious preprepared meals during the day.

Richard Woodward, General Manager for Care Homes, was delighted to be at the show with the team: “It’s been a tough time for businesses in general during the pandemic and the apetiser is an example of how we’ve successfully managed to adapt to various challenges by continuing to connect with our customers across the country. The buzz from the show has been great; myself and the team have really enjoyed seeing so many familiar faces and having some much needed catch ups.”

The concept behind the apetiser was realised during lockdown when apetito was unable to visit care customers within the care home environment. The solution? To create a mobile presentation unit (the apetiser) where food could still be presented and meetings with key decision makers conducted safely, outside the premises. It was a hit.

So much so, that the team decided to bring a bigger and better version to this year’s Care Show in order to present a selection of its meals throughout the day. Needless to say, as the only exhibitor to serve food

over the two days, the apetiser went down a storm.

Meals included Sweet & Sour Chicken, Beef Casserole, Chana Masala, Minted Summer Vegetables, Courgette and Carrot and Asparagus with Parsley Butter.

It’s no secret that dementia presents a serious challenge for care homes in ensuring those who live with dementia receive the nutrition they need. apetito’s immersive dining experience brought to life the various issues that those living with dementia as well as the coordination difficulties and challenges in using cutlery that many people can face during mealtimes.

Visitors to the stand were given sunglasses, bibs, gloves and weights around their wrists (to simulate muscle weakness) and then invited to sit and eat in a noisy, cluttered, dark dining room, with cutlery.

Understandably, the mealtime experience was a challenging one.

Diners were then led into a separate room which was bright and spacious, and the company’s Finger Food Bites were unveiled. apetito’s new range is made up of 12 dishes. Six ‘Finger Food Classics’ and six of the new and trailblazing Finger Food Bites which include

Chicken and Mushroom Casserole, Ham and Leek, Chicken Tikka, Sausage Casserole, Salmon Supreme and Veggie Bolognaise. These gamechanging meals enable residents to feed themselves nutritionally balanced meals in one bite, without struggling to manipulate cutlery. In addition, they allow residents the freedom to pick up and put down a complete hot meal with no mess and with minimal residue left on fingers.

Importantly, care homes can choose from a selection which includes plant-based meals as well as healthier choice, and gluten free.

Also on the stand was Declan Henderson, Registered Dietitian and Category Development Manager at apetito, who played a crucial role in bringing the experiential dining concept to life: “Dementia is ever prevalent in the care setting and has a real implication on mealtimes. For us putting people in residents’ shoes is so important to help people see and understand the challenges their residents are facing.

“We feel that doing something live and experiential is the best way to achieve this. Delegates that have taken part have been able to reflect on their own dementia practices and the all-important role that nutrition plays in that.”

All places booked must be paid within 15 days of booking and before the conference unless otherwise agreed with Script Events.

A telephone or fax booking must confirm when and how payment will be made A refund will be given, less £20 admin, fee for cancellations received more than 15 days prior to the conference. No refunds will be given with less than 15 days to the conference. However, delegate substitutes will be accepted to the day of the event at no extra cost.
