Call for an end to wind turbines in the Holme Valley By Sandie Marshall COUNCILLORS are calling for an end to wind turbines in the Holme Valley. They say they are inefficient, unsafe and unpopular. “Enough is enough,” says Holme Valley South conservative councillor Donald Firth. “They are going up everywhere and they are an eyesore. Some are blowing down and those that are working are only 23-28 per cent efficient. People need to understand they are not all they are cracked up to be.” Coun Firth says he and fellow councillors Nigel Patrick and Ken Sims are spending huge amounts of time trying to help people whose turbines are faulty or have been damaged by high winds, plus further time dealing with objections to new turbines being erected. They are currently trying to secure a meeting with government Energy

Minister John Hayes to raise their concerns. Mr Hayes recently ruffled feathers at Westminster when he challenged government support for onshore wind farms. Last month around 120 owners of turbines supplied by Brighouse company Evoco were told to shut their machines down because of safety fears. The company’s warning followed its own investigation into cases including one in Hepworth earlier this year when a huge turbine blade detached in high winds and crashed to the ground. Coun. Firth says it’s now time for Kirklees to follow the example of other UK beauty spots including the Peak District and Lake District in banning wind turbines from its high places altogether. “At the very least we need better regulations and planning guidance,” he said. Currently an average of two or

three new planning applications per month are submitted for wind turbines in the Holme Valley. Generally, councils look on applications sympathetically because of their commitment to green forms of energy although they remain unpopular with people living around them. In November, planning permission was granted for a 24.6m turbine at Shaley Farm, Sandy Gate, Scholes, despite nine letters of objection from people nearby. New ‘monster’ 100m turbines which are currently being erected at the Crow Edge wind farm above the Holme Valley are clearly visible from Hade Edge. Resident Chris Giles told The Review: “I’m no NIMBY and I’m all for renewables but it doesn’t seem long until this whole Hepworth, Hade Edge, Dunford Bridge area will become one big wind farm. “I like the view from my kitchen window but it keeps changing!”

Holmfirth travel advisers Emma Husthwaite and Kirsty Walker with just some of the toys donated so far this year.

Bags of generosity for youngsters HOLMFIRTH’s Co-operative Travel Agency is running its annual appeal to fill Santa’s Suitcase with toys for sick children. Each year, staff at the Victoria Street shop ask for donations of new or good quality used toys which are delivered to the children’s wards of Huddersfield’s Royal Infirmary in good time for the big day. This year they are hoping for a record

number of donations from customers, businesses and local people. Toys for children of any age can be handed into the shop until December 15 but must be unwrapped to allow for checking. Travel adviser Kirsty Walker said they are hoping for a bumper year of donations: “We’ve already had a wonderful amount of toys donated but we’d love to fill several suitcases before we take them to the hospital. People are so generous.”

Crafty break with the ranger

Friends of Cliff Rec share their plans with Jason McCartney MP (second right) during his recent visit.

Rec will soon be sitting pretty with lottery cash By Sandie Marshall CLIFF recreation ground is well on its way to getting a new seating and information point thanks to an £8,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The Lottery has promised to partfund the project on the understanding that a further £5,000 is raised locally over the next 12 months. Earlier this year, Cliff Rec was granted permanent protected status as a Queen Elizabeth II Playing Field as part of the Diamond Jubilee and Olympic Games legacy. Now, Friends of Cliff Rec, the group of local people behind the project, are determined to see better facilities built there.

The lottery fund-backed project is for a large, semi-circle dry-stone seat to allow up to 20 visitors to enjoy the spectacular views from the Wooldale rec. Each side of the seat would have stone plaques bearing information about the geography, history and heritage of the area. It is hoped to involve local school children in the production of the information. As well as the design and construction of the seat itself, the Heritage Lottery Fund money allows funding for historical research and recording through volunteers and consultation with local people. Existing research shows the rec, which has a large Victorian arched

shelter, has played an important part in community life in Wooldale for hundreds of years. Jane Hamilton, chair of the Friends of Cliff Rec, is determined to see the additional £5,000 raised and the project completed. She said: “Now we’re a QE2 field we should be raising the profile of the rec and looking after it properly. “This seat should encourage local people to use the rec more and even become a tourist attraction. We still have local people who don’t use it and some who don’t even know it exists. “We hope this project will promote ownership of the rec by the local community.”

TAKE A crafty break from the hustle and bustle of Christmas with a walk and activity with Castle Hill ranger Julian Brown on December 14. Julian has organised a short walk to enjoy what the season has to offer, culminating with joining the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust at their Christmas crafts event at Hall Bower Chapel. People wishing to take part

should meet at 11am on the top car park at Castle Hill where the walk will return for 3pm. The event costs £3 which includes refreshments and all the craft materials to make gifts. Booking is essential by contacting Julian on 07968 426312. Good footwear, warm clothing and waterproofs are advisable and only assistance dogs are allowed.

Mulled wine and carols in the park JOIN Meltham and Meltham Mills Band for Victorian Carols in the Park on Sunday December 9 from 4pm. Mulled wine and mince pies will get everyone in the mood to sing their favourite Christmas carols at this free event in Meltham

Hall Park, supported by Meltham Town Council and the Crossroads charity shop. Organisers are advising visitors to park at St James Church and Meltham Hall car parks, and to bring a torch.

Let me entertain you, says Gary A MELTHAM tour guide and comic says he’s determined to go to Afghanistan and entertain British troops there. Gary Naylor wants to make the trip in honour of Pte Tom Wroe, the 18-year-old Meltham soldier who died in September. Gary is a friend of the Wroe family and knew Tom since he was a baby. “It really got to me when Tom died. All he ever wanted was to be a soldier,” Gary said. “This would be my way of saying thanks to all the lads out there and to tell them they are not there in vain. “I’d also really like to lay a wreath for Tom on behalf of everyone from Meltham. That would be an amazing thing to be able to do.” He has made his offer to Yorkshire regiment officers in Wakefield and Harrogate, and with their support has now sent a letter to the commander at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan. He’s included a DVD of his stand-up comedy routine which he believes would give a real reminder of home to hundreds of young men and women serving there. “It would be great if I could be there to give them all a real laugh for Christmas but that’s probably too soon. I just want to go whenever I can,” he said. Hundreds of British tourists get a

Tom’s family says thanks

Gary Naylor taste of Gary’s routine each year when he entertains them on coach tours around the Holme Valley. He started his career, however, as a stand-up comic and mimic. “I only started doing tour guiding as a relief between comedy performances and it really took off,” he explained. “I found I could mimic the characters from Last of the Summer Wine and that went down a storm with the tourists. “My full act includes stuff from all my comedy heroes – Eric Morecambe, Les Dawson, Ronnie Barker, as well as Summer Wine stuff. I’ve got hours of material to deliver and I know they would love it. I just hope the Army takes me up on my offer and says yes!”

TOM Wroe’s father says his family has been “bowled over” by incredible local support since Tom was killed in September. Mick Wroe told the Review how he, Tom’s mum Claire and sister Demi have appreciated the hundreds of kind messages they have received: “Everyone has been amazing. It’s really helped to know that people are proud of him and what he did.” Mick says he is particularly grateful for events held in Tom’s honour that have raised money for the Yorkshire Regiment Benevolent Fund. A recent music night and auction at Meltham Conservative Club raised £1,122 and an event at Greenacres Care Home raised a further £600. “It’s incredible that people have rallied round in this way,” he said. “It’s important that we get the chance to say thanks to everyone who has supported us and that they know we are very grateful.”

Fast track service makes a comeback By Sandie Marshall A 30-MINUTE fast track bus service between Holmfirth and Huddersfield is to be reintroduced. Transport Executive Metro says it has listened to demands for the service from Holme Valley passengers as part of its major consultation and review of bus services throughout West Yorkshire. The direct service along Huddersfield Road will be reinstated on a forprofit basis by bus operator First. Metro has also done a Uturn on its proposal to cut its service through Netherthong village, despite low passenger numbers. It

says the current service will be maintained Monday to Friday but will be removed at weekends when it is uneconomic to run. Speaking at the Valley’s Area Committee Meeting, Metro bus services manager Neale Wallace said that funding for buses in the Holme Valley will be maintained – meaning it spends DOUBLE per head on Holme Valley services compared to anywhere else. “Metro is part of the government’s austerity programme and is subject to a seven per cent cut in our budget. We’ve carried out a major review of all our services to see where costs can be cut. However, we knew

the Holme Valley was different from other areas because we recognised there were already issues with the service and a high level of dissatisfaction among passengers, partly due to the bus services not being right and partly due to the geography of hills and narrow streets. “As a result of the review, the fast service will be reinstated. We are also looking at improvements to bus links to local health centres. I can say we will be maintaining our current levels of funding to the Holme Valley – this is in contrast to other parts of West Yorkshire where significant savings are having to be made.”

Six buses a day ‘totally inadequate’ WHILE Metro’s decisions are good news for some Valley bus users, there is little comfort for Hade Edge residents who say they are being left out in the cold. Only six buses a day serve the village, with the first not departing until 10.43am leaving commuters to Huddersfield with a walk of around a mile to catch a 313 bus from Scholes or Hepworth. University student Alex Malkin is angry that Metro seems unprepared to listen: “The Hade Edge bus service is totally inadequate and Metro just says there’s nothing it can do. I’ve looked

at the stats and there are now 140 people in the 16-19 year old group living in Hade Edge, most of whom need to get into Huddersfield for college or university. Other villages such as Scholes and Hepworth have good bus services – why can’t we?” In response, Metro’s Neale Wallace said that, despite being in Kirklees, Hade Edge is served by Tate’s Travel buses which are funded by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive and therefore out of Metro’s control.

Award-winning Annabel hopes for successful second chapter ... By Sandie Marshall

Annabel Pitcher

AFTER receiving huge praise and an amazing 25 award nominations for her first book, Netherthong author Annabel Pitcher is hoping for even greater success when her second novel, Ketchup Clouds, is published in the New Year. Annabel, 28, is a former Holmfirth High School pupil and Oxford University graduate. Her debut book My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece tells the story of a 10-year-old boy and his family rebuilding their lives after his sister died in a terrorist bomb attack. It earned her an Author’s Award from the Society of Authors and the Branford Boase Award, as well as nominations for the Galaxy British Book Award, the Dylan Thomas Prize, The Red House Book Award, the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and the Carnegie Medal. Published in hardback and paperback across Europe and in the US, the novel was also recorded as an audio book by ex-Dr Who star David

Tennant, a self-confessed fan of Annabel’s. As well as enjoying her first year as a published author, Annabel has been working hard on Ketchup Clouds, which will be available from January 3. It centres around Zoe, a 15-yearold British schoolgirl with a dark secret. One day, through a class project, she hears of a criminal who is locked up on death row in Texas. Unable to sleep one night she begins to write him letters, slowly unlocking her secret piece by piece. Annabel admits that, unlike My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece, the ideas for Ketchup Clouds came slowly. She reached back into her own childhood to a time when she herself had a pen pal on death row. She said: “When I was trying to figure out who Zoe might choose to write to, I came up with all sorts of people but no one felt quite right. But then one day I suddenly rememYou can pick one up at one of the following supermarkets: Sainsburys Shorehead Tesco Penistone Morrisons Waterloo

bered that, in my teens, I’d written to a man on death row. “I got involved in the pen pal scheme through Amnesty International. We wrote to each other for a few years. It is strange how honest you can be with a stranger – almost more honest than you can be with your friends – and I confided in him regularly without worrying about judgement because he’d done something wrong himself. “When I remembered this man, he seemed the perfect recipient of Zoe’s letters, so I used a fictitious version of my pen pal in the novel. “Ketchup Clouds is very much based in the real world, with all its light and darkness. Hopefully people will find some of the novel amusing, and other parts sad. “That’s all I really think about when I am writing.” Ketchup Clouds is available to buy from high street and online retailers from January 3 published by Orion. The Hey Diddles, from left, Mel, Sally and Lisa prepare for their sell-out Christmas shows.

Hey Diddles ‘over the moon’ as extra tickets go on sale EXTRA tickets have been made available for a new children’s Christmas show in Holmfirth which sold out within days of being available. Due to popular demand, the two Hey Diddles Christmas shows will now be staged in the main hall of Holmfirth Civic on December 23, allowing an additional 60 tickets for each performance. The Hey Diddles were formed in September by Holme Valley mums and close friends Sally Norton, Lisa Kendall and Mel Brockway. They say they are bowled over by ticket demand.

“It’s amazing,” says Lisa, who plays Sunny, the yellow Diddle. “We started with just one show in Holmfirth and then we added a second because so many people wanted to come. Now, we’ve moved to the bigger hall to allow even more tickets. “We’re really excited about the show because of the positive reaction we’ve had. We’ve got all the favourite action songs that children love and we’re looking forward to getting everyone up and dancing along.” The trio have taken inspiration for their act from children’s TV entertainers the

Tweenies and the Wiggles. Their show, loosely based around the famous poem ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas’, will also be performed at Denby Dale and Slaithwaite during December. Families at the Holmfirth and Honley Christmas lights switch on parties received a sneak preview of the show when the Diddles performed for the crowds there. The additional tickets for the Holmfirth shows at 2pm and 4pm on December 23 are available from Holmfirth Tourist Information Centre priced £5 for children and £3 for adults.

3, 2, 1 – Merry Christmas ...

Honley’s lights are switched on by Santa, Jason McCartney and Beauty.

By Sandie Marshall

HUNDREDS of local families packed Holmfirth and Honley to see the festive season officially start with the switch-on of the Christmas lights. The Holme Valley Business Association organised a party in both towns to help everyone get into the Christmas spirit. In Holmfirth, Captain Hook and Smee from Turn Again Theatre’s January panto Peter Pan were given the honour of pushing the big red button to turn on the lights. Joining them on stage were children from Huddersfield Theatre Train and local children’s entertainment group The Hey Diddles, while Kirklees Mayor Coun David Ridgway, local MP Jason McCartney and councillors from Kirklees and Holme Valley Parish Council were on all hand. MP Jason McCartney joined Santa and Huddersfield panto star Helen Woolf to turn on the lights in Honley. Helen will be playing Beauty in Lawrence Batley Theatre’s Beauty and the Beast in December. Carol singing was led by Honley Yorkshire Traction Band, and the Hey Diddles

This year’s lights have a little added sparkle, thanks in part to generous donations of £3,000 each from the Co-operative and Lidl supermarkets, plus funding from Holme Valley Parish Council and small businesses in the Valley. To encourage all local shop traders in Holmfirth and Honley to

play their part in the Christmas decorations, the business association ran a ‘best dressed Christmas shop window’ competiton which was judged as part of the switch on parties. The Holmfirth winner was card shop Occasions, while the Honley prize went to the Post Office.

Business association president Royston Rogers presents the shop window competition trophy to Keely Robinson and Tom Kitchen-Dunn from Occasions.

Major facelift for bus station By Sandie Marshall HOLMFIRTH bus station is to get a major facelift during 2013. Kirklees Council says it will spend around The young adventurers with their navigation award certificates. £175,000 updating the bus station and Towngate car park into a ‘transport hub’ with improved accessibility, information and security. Additional money has also been pledged to the project from transport executive Metro. Joanne Waddington from Kirklees transport strategy team says the geography of the bus station does not allow for large-scale transformations but the project should make a noticeable difference for bus passengers nevertheless. She said: “The facilities in Holmfirth are showing their age and are in need of investment. Holmfirth will be part of a wider network of transport hubs in West Yorkshire. “It’s a small area and clearly we can’t do anything about that. What we can do is look at possible improvements to the existing site such as maps, timetable information, and electronic real-time signs to say when buses will be arriving.” Joanne says the project team is currently looking at the issues at the bus station and drawing up proposals for improvements. Other ideas being considered are a dedicated drop-off and pick-up point for coach passengers, better lighting and seating in the waiting areas and a new CCTV help system which would allow passengers in Holmfirth to talk remotely to a bus adviser in Huddersfield. Whatever changes are introduced at the bus station, Kirklees says there will be no reduction in spaces in the neighbouring Towngate car park. Joanne said: “We may look at a better layout for the car park as part of the project, but there will be no reduction in the number of spaces.” Martin Smith from Holmfirth Transition Town welcomed the bus station investment and called for a bike hire facility to be added as part of the improvements. He said: “We could be the first town in West Yorkshire to offer a bike station where people can get off a bus and pick up a bike. That would be great integration and forward thinking.”

Young adventurers heading in the right direction A GROUP of young adventurers recently completed the Bronze National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) as part of their work towards the Duke of Edinburgh Award. The NNAS is a non-competitive, personal performance scheme for all ages to learn navigation skills and improve confidence. The group developed and practiced their advanced map reading skills during a number of night walks under the stars. “It was good to see the young people’s confidence with a map and compass develop over the twelve-week course,” commented DofE Volunteer Lee Tedder. Anyone aged 14-25 can get involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme by joining the Holmfirth group that meets every Monday evening at The Phoenix Centre on Dunford Road from 7-9pm. Past activities have included Chinese cooking, bike maintenance, multisports, circuit training and fund raising. All activities lead towards levels of the DoE, the world’s leading achievement award for young people. To find out more about the Holmfirth group, visit www.kirkleesdofe.org or call the DofE office on 01484 222374.

Jason gets tough to bring message home By Sandie Marshall

MP Jason recreated Vinnie's campaign pose.

HOLME Valley’s local MP Jason McCartney stepped into the shoes of notorious hard man Vinnie Jones to show his support for a campaign to get life-saving skills taught in secondary schools. Jason imitated Vinnie’s ‘Hard Fast’ pose from the end of a TV advert currently being shown across the country. The advert, for The British Heart Foundation and Resuscitation Council UK, features Vinnie demonstrating the correct way to give CPR massage to a collapsed man. The two charities are calling on the Government to include life-sav-

ing skills as a mandatory part of the school curriculum to ensure all students are taught the skills which would help save a life. In September, they delivered a petition to Downing Street with more than 100,000 signatures of support. Now, Jason has joined fellow MPs in recognising the public call to teach children these essential skills and has debated the issue in Parliament. He said: “In a week when Vinnie Jones is back on our screens teaching people what to do in an emergency, it’s only fitting that we turn

our attention to England’s schoolchildren. “Stepping in and helping to save someone’s life in an emergency shouldn’t just be left to the hard men. By teaching life-saving skills in schools, we could put hundreds of thousands of new life-savers on the streets each year. “Every second counts in an emergency, so I’m supporting the campaign to make life-saving skills part of our children’s education – it could be the difference between life and death.” People can find more information about the campaign at bhf.org.uk/lifesaving.

Holmfirth first in squatter action POLICE officers from Holmfirth became the first in Kirklees to enforce new laws against squatters. Valleys Neighbourhood Police Team officers joined colleagues from Response Team and other departments to evict and arrest a small group of squatters from a property on New Hey Road near Scammonden. New legislation came into force in September making it an offence to squat in a residential

building with squatters facing up to six months in jail and/or up to a £5,000 fine. In the pre-planned operation, six occupants of the property were arrested and taken to Castlegate Police Station. The arrests were made under the new legislation as well as offences relating to drugs. Cautions were given in relation to squatting and further

enquiries relating to possession of drugs with intent to supply. The property has now been returned to its lawful owner. Inspector Mark Trueman, lead for policing in The Valleys area, said the operation was carried out successfully with minimum disruption to the local community. He went onto to thank local residents for their continued support.

Grassroots grant for gardening network THE HOLME Valley Gardening Network has been awarded a grant by the Longley Farm Grassroots One Community Foundation. The grant was awarded at the end of November at a special presentation evening at the Dewsbury Rams’ Tetley Stadium. Gardening network director and project manager Elaine Thelier and director Mark Dickinson accepted the cheque from Sir John Harman of One Community Foundation.

HVGN applied for the funds to re-employ David Miller who worked with them to maintain the Network’s gardens and support the Gardening for Health sessions that are run on Wednesdays and Thursdays. David worked with them through Remploy but was made redundant earlier this year due to Government funding cuts. The grant comes as positive news for the gardening

network which has recently been targeted by thieves at its New Mill community allotments. During the last few months, the shed there has been broken into twice and gardening tools stolen. Valley’s Police would like people to be on the lookout for gardening tools marked with the letters HVGN in black permanent ink, and ask anyone with information about the thefts to contact them on 01484 436855.

Holmfirth’s first shock cash mob get ready for the raid.

Cash mob shock for local trader A GROUP of shoppers met in Holmfirth with just one intent – to form a mob and shock a local shopkeeper. But this was no illegal gathering. The shoppers were forming a shock cash mob, the latest tactic to support independent traders. Shock cash mobbing started in the US and has been tried only a few times before in the UK. It involves a

group of people all committed to each spending £10 in a single shop. By keeping the shopping destination a secret and all descending at the same time, the mob creates a buzz and hopefully draws attention to the benefits of shopping locally. Organising the Holmfirth shock cash mob was Janet Bebb who runs business consultancy Social Progress.

She advertised the event on Facebook and gained interest from local traders, eventually choosing Daisy Lane shop Holme and Gift out of the hat. Janet said: “It was great for a first attempt at a shock cash mob. We certainly shocked Gemma in Holme and Gift when we arrived to spend our tenners. It was lovely to see her face light up!”

Funding brings new wave of courses NEW FUNDING has been found to double the number of young people able to attend training courses at Meltham-based community radio project Two Valleys Radio. Head’s Together Productions, the organisation behind Two Valleys, has announced a new wave of training courses for 11 to 19 year olds starting in the New Year. Held three nights each week, the courses will cover different aspects of working in radio, including journalism, music and drama. The project has been providing broadcast training for teenagers since it was set up in 2009. Now, new funding from Youth Music, Kirklees

Council and the Big Lottery Fund will enable more youngsters to get involved. Millie Watkins, Two Valleys Radio Project Coordinator, is confident there is plenty of demand for the training: “Over the past year we have been overwhelmed by the number of young people wanting new experiences and to develop their skills through radio. “These local teens are ahead of the game; they know they need to start building a portfolio of skills to set themselves apart from their peers.” Anybody aged 11–19 can apply for a place on one of Two Valleys Radio’s sixmonth courses, which will

take place in Honley from January, and cost only £25. Jenny O’Sullivan, 15, has already taken part in some radio drama activities at Two Valleys Radio. She said: “I think courses like this can really benefit young people like me, improving confidence, social skills and a variety of other techniques and skills. The meetings are constructive, interesting and a great laugh! I leave every week with things to think about, it's a great way to finish off a school day, and I always look forward to the next meeting.” To find out more about the training courses, send an email to: info@twovalleysra- By Sandie Marshall dio.co.uk. HONLEY’S popular Lupton Square Gallery has closed its doors after owner Geoff Harrop took the decision to retire. The gallery has been an important part of the arts scene in the Holme Valley since it opened 17 years ago, hosting regular exhibitions of paintings, ceramics, sculpture and original prints, many by local artists. Geoff told the Review he was sad to close the gallery, but felt the time was right:

“It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while and it does feel right. It’s time to move on. “I was a bit disappointed that no one came forward to take on the business as an art gallery but it is due to reopen very soon as a cafe, so at least the building won’t sit empty.” During its time, Lupton Square established a reputation as one of the area’s finest galleries, receiving excellent reviews for its space, atmosphere and quality of exhibits. Geoff remem-

bers visits from a number of leading artists including one from celebrated British sculptor Sir Anthony Caro and his wife painter Sheila Girling. Geoff, who now hopes to have more time to concentrate on his own painting, added: “I’m going to miss the preview events and the people. I’d like to thank Carol Lister, Jenny Lockwood and Keith Mountain who helped me at the gallery from timeto-time, and everyone who visited us over the years.”

Late-night bid to tempt shoppers MANY of Holmfirth and Honley’s shops will open late on two Thursdays in December to tempt people to complete their Christmas gift shopping locally. Shops will stay open until 8pm on Thursday 13 and 20 with many promising music, mince pies and mulled wine to help make the evenings go with a swing.

Kirklees Council is also hoping to encourage people into Holmfirth with free parking on Fridays and Saturdays during December. The council is dropping its charges in all its car parks after 12noon on Friday December 7, 14 and 21 and Saturday 15 and 22. Parking will also be free in the town on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and January 2.

Parliamentary Corner with Jason McCartney MP

A very Merry Christmas to you all ... I CAN hardly believe Christmas is here once again. It’s time to reflect on a year that brought the pride and joy of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympic Games, Huddersfield Town’s thrilling playoff victory and on the down side the wettest summer on record. I’m writing this column with many predicting a big freeze this winter. So I won’t be venturing far from my home in Honley this Christmas. I’ll be spending Christmas Day with my parents up at Holmbridge and looking forward to a walk round Digley reservoir after a lovely festive family lunch. I’m already getting into the Christmas spirit though with the fabulous Christmas light switch ons in Holmfirth and Honley. The drizzle failed to dampen the fes-

tive atmosphere in Holmfirth where the big crowd were rewarded with a super firework display. It was crisp and dry when I joined Santa and “Beauty” from the LBT’s production of “Beauty and the Beast” to switch on the Honley Christmas lights. Congratulations to the Holme Valley Business Association and the Holme Valley Parish Council for making it happen, along with the many volunteers who care so much about our community. The mini Christmas trees with lights on in the centre of Holmfirth look great at night. As I always do, I’ll be doing my best to Shop Local this month to support our local traders and I hope you can too. The best way of keeping a good range of local shops is by using them.

Lisa flying high as Wendy at the Civic Hall in 1993.

Tamsin follows in mum’s footsteps HOLMFIRTH’S Turn Again Theatre company is promising to whisk audiences to Neverland for its January panto, Peter Pan. There will be plenty of fantasy, fairies and flying as the boy who never grew up battles the evil Captain Hook and his pirates from January 23 to 26 at Holmfirth Civic Hall. For cast member Lisa Kendall, whose 16year-old daughter Tamsin is starring as Wendy, the production is something of a trip down memory lane. Exactly 20 years ago, Lisa herself played the part of Wendy when Turn Again last staged Peter Pan in 1993. She said: “I played the same part, in the same show, with the same society, on the same stage! Now Tamsin is following in my footsteps – or more accurately, flying in my footsteps!” First time panto director Franki Hackett says she is working with the company’s special effects team to implement many weird and wonderful ideas for aerial projection. “Not all of them are humanly possible, but it’ll be great fun trying! I'm very excited about it and audiences should expect to see some pretty innovative things.” she said. “After the astounding response to our previous pantos, this is one not to miss.” Tickets for Wednesday to Saturday evening performances plus a Saturday matinee are available priced £7 and £5 from Holmfirth Tourist Information centre. Tamsin is following in mum Lisa’s footsteps by playing Wendy in January's pantomine. Also pictured is Ewen Rivallain as Michael.

The latest news and views from Holmfirth Transition Town

The Green Deal Cashback is here to help you ... CASHBACK will be available to householders who make energy saving home improvements under the Green Deal. The government has announced that the long expected Green Deal will commence in January 2013. First come first served, so look at how you can save energy in the home now and benefit from this government initiative. In order to inform and advise the public on energy saving ideas and microgeneration Holmfirth Transition Town held its third Bright Green Energy Show in the gallery room of the Holmfirth Parish Church recently and is planning to hold the show on the first Saturday in October each year. So look out for us in 2013 when the Show will inform you of all the details and benefits of the Green Deal

and the Renewable Heat Incentive and how you can benefit. The Green Deal is an initiative to transform our hard to heat homes through energy efficiency and allows homes and businesses to pay for energy efficiency improvements through expected savings in their energy bills. Early applications could get cash back provided you have a Green Deal Assessment carried out on your property and install some of the recommended energy savings improvements. Jason McCartney opened this year’s Bright Green Energy Show encouraging everyone to save energy and save money through the government’s initiatives. The Show exhibited numerous ideas on energy saving from simple draught proofing, insulation, curtain lining and energy sav-

ing lighting to microgeneration of power from the sun, wind, water and ground source heat. Models demonstrating energy saving were popular with the children, especially the power assessment of light bulbs, the water and wind power models and the jumping bugs powered by the sun. From energy efficiency at home to using public transport: Let’s Talk About Our Buses, a conversation between bus users and transport planners, will take place on Saturday, December 8 from 10.15 to 1.00, in the Gallery Room, upstairs at Holmfirth Parish Church. Come and meet Coun James Lewis, Chair of Metro (West Yorkshire Integrated Transport Authority) and give him your views. Discuss topical issues and talk over informal lunch.

Stephanie Clay (right) receives her diamond award from Weight Watchers UK Operations Director Samantha Rhodes.

Inspirational Stephanie wins diamond award HELPING the Holme Valley get into sparkling shape for Christmas has earned a diamond award for local slimming leader Stephanie Clay. She has been recognised for her outstanding service to slimmers in the area with a Weight Watchers Diamond Leader award – only given once every two years to the organisation’s very top achievers. During 2012 alone, Stephanie has helped her members shed an astonishing 4,564 pounds – that’s 326 stones of total weight loss, and has led 96 members to successfully shed five per cent or more of their weight. She holds three Weight Watchers classes each week from Brambles bar and cafe in Holmfirth. One of her

members, Louise Roberts, believes the award is very well-deserved. She said: “Stephanie is wonderful! She is an inspiration to many of us and gives us great tips, tricks and support to help us achieve our weight loss goals. I have lost 32.5 pounds with Stephanie and I’ve never felt better!” Stephanie knows firsthand how difficult losing weight can be. As a former Weight Watchers member herself, she shed 53 pounds before becoming a leader to help and inspire others. She is very pleased to have become a Diamond Leader. She said: “I’m so proud of my members and how well they’ve done; and to get this award for doing something I love is amazing!”

Suspect two is also white, around 18 years old, 5’9” tall and with a larger build. He was wearing a blue, waterproof-type jacket. Anyone with information should dial 101 or contact Valleys Neighbourhood Police Team on 01484 436855.

For the eighth successive year, the concert will also feature current world brass band champions The Cory Band from South Wales. Callie will be performing two solo spots as well as joining with the choir for a medley from West Side Story. The concert starts at 7.15 pm and tickets priced £7 to £16 are available from Kirklees tourist information

Texan mezzo-soprano Callie Jo Denbigh will perform with Honley Male Voice Choir this Christmas. centres in Huddersfield and Holmfirth. Meanwhile, the choir is looking forward to starting 2013 with a new musical director following the appointment of Steven Roberts.

Steven, 48, is a conductor, arranger, vocal coach and adjudicator and will bring a wealth of experience to the job. He succeeds Peter Lynch who left the choir during the summer. Currently Steven is musical director of Sing Live UK one of the country’s largest independent adult singing organisations and he is musical director of both the Manchester based Altrincham Choral Society and the Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir. During his career he has been musical director of both the Dodworth and Skelmanthorpe male voice choirs and chorus master for the Liverpool Welsh Choral Union and The Huddersfield Choral Society. Roger Wild, chairman of Honley Male Voice Choir said: “The choir has been through an uncertain few years, but Steven’s appointment offers us just the opportunity we need at this time. We also hope that by appointing someone of Steven’s calibre the choir will move forward both musically and in attracting new singers to help us build an exciting future for the choir and its members.”

Winning poets chosen as youngsters get creative CHILDREN in Netherthong tried their hands at creative writing for a poetry competition organised as part of the village fair. They were asked to pen a poem of any kind based on the subject of winter, and the results were judged by Rev Nick Heaton, the vicar of All Saints Netherthong and successful local writer Annabel Pitcher. She said how pleased she was to be involved: “There is something

special about seeing young people’s imaginations come to life when they get excited about an idea – so it is a privilege and a pleasure to be asked to judge writing competitions as an author.” She also told how the judging was a serious affair: “Let me tell you, the vicar and I had several heated conversations about the entries. It was freezing in the church, but we were still there for two hours, reading the

poems and discussing them at length.” After the deliberation, the two winners were chosen. Mathilda Hatfield-Grossova and Grace Cooper took the two top prizes with Hyrum Simpson and Lottie Eccles named as runners up. All four received prizes of book tokens and Mathilda and Grace also received signed copies of Annabel’s book.

The first signs of Spring already ... IT FEELS like all the hatches have been battened down in preparation for the winter. Our fields are nearly bare with our breeding sheep away for the winter and cattle housed indoors. Icy conditions and fewer daylight hours make working outdoors at this time of year challenging, however, we witnessed the first signs of Spring when our cattle were pregnancy scanned. Like in hospital, our cattle were ultrasound scanned. The scan picture is viewed through special glasses worn by the operator and shows if the cow is in calf, how many calves she is carrying and when she is due to calve. With this information we can better care for our cattle by feeding a highly nutritious diet near to each cow’s calving date. This promotes good calf growth leading to a strong healthy calf at birth and stimulates milk production in the cow so she can feed her calf well. Later calving cows will remain on a normal winter diet for longer so the calf doesn’t

grow too big which can lead to a difficult birth. Cattle have a gestation period of nine months and we have 36 cows due to calve between

April and July next year. The cattle not yet in calf will run with our bull until February when we will scan them again. Our flock of breeding sheep

will return home in February and we will also scan these to determine how many lambs they are carrying and when the are due to lamb.

A CHANCE remark last New Year’s Eve reignited Katherine Greenwell‘s passion for creating pottery. Now, almost 12 months on, she has launched Atlantic Ceramics, making beautiful wall plaques depicting the different shipping areas of the UK coastline. Katherine moved to the Holme Valley 17 years ago and started attending pottery classes at Holmfirth adult education centre. After honing her skills with the help of local teacher and potter Sue Jenkins, she set up her own business creating one-off pieces. On taking up a job as a part time teaching assistant at Netherthong Primary School, where Katherine still works, she shelved her art – until something unexpected happened that made her re-think. She explained: “I’m a member of local band Rocks and Reels, and we were playing on New Year’s Eve at Holmfirth Civic Hall. A man came up to me and asked if I was Katherine Greenwell. He then said he had bought one of my wall plaques, at Art Week, and that it still gives him great pleasure to own it and look at it. This was an incredible thing to happen and it ultimately triggered me into going back to making pottery, and re-establishing a business on a professional basis.” After months of planning and preparation, Katherine’s work is now available through www.atlanticceramics.co.uk. Part of the process has included setting up a relation-

Katherine’s ceramic plaques are inspired by the shipping forecast. ship with a pottery in Stoke-on-Trent where a team of expert craftsmen make moulds from each of her originals, hand-produce the plaques, and then decorate and finish them again by hand. “One of the most exciting things about the new business has been working as part of a team in a great British industry that was on its knees quite recently, but is now starting to thrive again. I love being a part of that,” she said. Katherine hopes her pottery will transport her customers from the green hills of the Holme Valley to the wild rocks and coves of the British coastline as each of her intricate wall plaques depicts a different take on the areas of the UK shipping forecast. “Before moving to Holmfirth I’d always lived on the coast; in West Cumbria, the Highlands of Scotland

and on a Pacific island. We’re an island nation and everyone has dreams of the coast. It takes us out of our everyday lives and reminds us of adventures and wild places,” she said. Katherine also finds inspiration from the story of Admiral Fitzroy, the father of modern weather forecasting who established the shipping forecast in the 1860s. She said: “He really was a remarkable man who captained the Beagle, a surveying brig, carrying Charles Darwin. Later, his determination to save lives at sea led him to divide the coast into different areas for individual weather reports – this system still remains today as the core of the shipping forecast. He really is a hero for fishermen and a great example of British invention and diligence.” To view and buy Katherine’s work visit www.atlanticceramics.co.uk

Event focuses on journey of Advent THE North Light Gallery is delighted to be collaborating with the Huddersfield Christian Communities Network to host a reflective experience based on the journey of Advent at the Gallery. There will be five themed areas which will help visitors to discover the meaning of Advent through creativity, images, prayer and reflection. The event is designed so that those with a Christian faith, other faith or no faith can visit and engage with the season that celebrates the coming of Jesus Christ.

Melanie Brooke, who forms part of the creative team designing the event said: “It is easy to forget the essence of what we are celebrating at Christmas. The season of Advent is the prelude to the birth of Christ and all that He came for to this world. We hope visitors will find it a non-threatening way of looking at who Jesus is and how much he cares for each of us. We hope it will be an antidote if you find preparing for Christmas stressful, coloured by difficult associations or just need a quiet moment.”

There will be a calm atmosphere, with peaceful music, creative displays, candles, with books available to dip into and a free gift to take away. The HCCN team will be at the gallery each day to welcome visitors and to answer any questions. www.ccnhuddersfield.org.uk melanie.brooke@northlightgallery.org. uk www.northlightgallery.org.uk Opening times: Sunday December 2: 11am-4.30pm Continues December 7-9: 10 – 4pm and December 14-15: 10 – 4pm

One-stop shop Modern, funky feel for new for car cleaning restaurant with soul ... CHRISTIAN SMITH is bringing eight years of hard work and experience in mobile car valeting to his new hand car wash business on Huddersfield Road. He has established the new car wash next to Holmfirth Garage. Motorists can call in for everything from a quick but thorough carwash to a full paintwork protection service. Christian has run his RC Mobile Valeting service since 2004 and has built up a loyal customer base. He believes he can now offer an even better service from his new premises. He said: “This is a one-stop shop for car cleaning – I can offer a high standard of washing, waxing and polishing for car exteriors and vacuuming, minivalets and full valets with Scotchguarding for interiors. “For those who really want the best, I am offering a full paint protection treatment which carries a three year guarantee. I clean the car to a good glossy finish and then apply a special laminate coating on top of the paintwork which protects against potentially damaging conditions such as dirt, frost and pollution.” As the carwash is within easy walking distance of Holmfirth town centre, drivers can drop off their cars for a wash or valet before going on to work or shop in the town. He adds: “Sometimes parking in Holmfirth can be difficult – especially if there’s a big event on. Why not

park here and walk into town – knowing your car will be beautifully clean when you get back? “Winter weather means salt on the road which can potentially damage paintwork so regular washing at this time of year is recommended.” Services at the carwash start from £5 for a hand wash up to £150 for the full paint protection service. Christian is offering all customers a loyalty card which gives every sixth wash free, and pensioners can take advantage of an opening special offer of a hand carwash for just £4.

WHEN hungry Americans want a good, traditional meal they head to their nearest soul food diner where they can feast on burgers, spicy chicken, ribs and pulled pork. Now Holme Valley foodies can do the same at Soul Kitchen, Holmfirth’s newest restaurant which has just opened at the bottom of Dunford Road. Former Hepworth landlords Michael and Sally Bell have taken the best of US soul food and mixed it with sharp-edged British culture to create a modern, funky feel for their new eatery. Customers can enjoy their meal against a backdrop of music industry imagery and graffiti painted onto the restaurant walls by local artists Richard Taylor and Oliver Smith. The menu offers plenty of family favourites including burgers plain or with all the trimmings, chicken and barbequed spare ribs. It may sound like typical chain restaurant fayre, but that’s where the similarity ends. Michael has 25 years of experience as a chef and he knows how to select, mix and cook fine ingredients to produce quality homecooked starters, mains with sides and desserts. “We’ve put all our experience into this simple concept delivered to a high standard,” he says. “Everything on the menu is bespoke and handdone which gives a quality you don’t get in restaurants where everything is mass produced.” The menu has also been designed with freshness and healthy eating in mind. There’s a selection of salads and vegetarian pastas, plus milkshakes made with fresh fruit. There

are, however, plenty of treats on the dessert menu including American waffles, chocolate brownies and Mike’s own version of apple pie. While Mike is busy in the kitchen, Sally will be looking after front of house. Soul Kitchen is fully licenced and offers a full choice of beers, wines and spirits as well as plenty of soft drink options. They hope their style will appeal to people of all ages. Indeed the concept for the restaurant was partially inspired by the couple’s son, 13, and daughter, 10 years old. “We’re open for the after-school crowd to come in, get a burger and milkshake, hang out with their friends and use the free WI-FI.” says Michael. “After that there’s the family market with our ‘little ones’ menu for the under 8s, and then we’re open later for the older crowd. We think our menu and atmosphere will

suit different age ranges equally.” Regulars can take advantage of a loyalty card and collect stamps towards special offers. Social media fans should visit the restaurant’s Facebook and Twitter pages on Wednesdays where they can find a special codeword pointing to that day’s best deals. But even without the promotions, an evening at Soul Kitchen shouldn’t break the bank. Main courses range from £4.50 to £7 with side orders from £2.50. Even better value are the mid-week family meal deals of a main course and two sides for just £9. Soul Kitchen can be found next door above the Y Bar at the bottom of Dunford, Road, Holmfirth HD9 2DP tel: 01484 687575, www.soulkitchenholmfirth.co.uk. Open Wednesday-Friday 4-10pm, Saturday 12noon-10pm and Sunday 12noon6pm.

The Grape Room will boast interesting fine wines and champagnes from around the world that will excite and delight you. Liz Wood, proprietor, said: “After working for Sainsburys for eight years prior to owning Gert’s, and gaining my wines and

spirits certificate at both level 1 and 2, I decided to bring memories of Shiraz, Merlots, Chardonnays, Muscats and much more into my new venture The Grape Room, to share with my loyal customers.” The Grape Room is open 9am 5.30pm Monday to Friday, and from 9am to 4pm on Saturdays in the run up to Christmas.

SASH Windows’ “Movember” fund-raising efforts inspired two students from the University of Huddersfield who are doing a Broadcast Journalism course. They chose Movember as a study subject, saw the original picture of the Sash team growing moustaches and went to Sash to interview them for their course. They were really grateful

for Sash’s help because they said it was surprising how many companies were not willing to help them. The Sash team of Craig Bedford, Keith Cosgrove and Jason Dickinson raised £650 between them and are pictured above with the Huddersfield students Elliott Davis (camera man), and Owen Mullarkey (interviewer).

Former Methodist Chapel boasts its own basement activity room CHURCH House, a converted Methodist Chapel built in 1872 standing in the heart of Netherthong Village near Holmfirth is on the market. The current owners, the Oakes family, moved into the five bedroom house in 2004 and have completely renovated the property providing a more open plan contemporary feel to this beautiful historic building. Mrs Oakes said: “When we bought the property we stripped it back to basics to provide a feeling of space which represented how a large chapel building should feel.” This is reflected in the kitchen which stretches the length of the property and really is the heart of the house, measuring 30’4 by 12’4, and containing a full length original pew from the chapel.

At the top of the house the bedrooms have fabulous views looking out over the surrounding countryside on one side and the quaint village of Netherthong on the other. Mrs Oakes said: “We have loved the church house, which has seen our children grow up, it has so much space for the children to play. “The basement room, which measures 30' by 28'2, has an indoor football area, games area and fitness equipment, the children love it.” Church House is priced at offers in the region of £725,000. It has five large bedrooms, a sitting room, play/library area, TV area, dining kitchen and two shower rooms. The property also has a driveway to the side/rear with a lawn, decked and flowering and shrubbed garden area.
