Pub music night in memory of road sweeper Adrian By Bronte Matthews A FUNDRAISING music night is being held at the Postcard Inn in Holmfirth in memory of Adrian Smith who has sadly died. Adrian, 69, was assaulted near to KFC on New Street in Huddersfield just after 11pm on May 13. He was taken to Leeds General Infirmary where he died of his injuries the following day. Landlord of the Postcard Inn, Kevin Sanders, has paid tribute to Adrian who was a regular at the pub. Kevin said: “Over the last 18 months Adrian started coming in more and more. He actually spent his last
night with us at the pub. “He had a great love of literature and music. He was also a lover of real ale. We would give him a free taster and he was always so polite, even if he didn’t like it. “It’s a sad loss for the community and we want to give him a good send off.” A night of live music will be held at the Holmfirth pub from 7pm on Friday, June 19, in memory of Adrian. Local bands and artists will perform including Bisley, The Moot, James Munroe and Rhys Hammond Booth. All money raised from the night will go towards planting a tree in the memorial gardens and whatever is left over will go to charity.
REMEMBERED: Adrian Smith Kerry Sykes, who runs Holmfirth Events, has also organised for a memorial bench to be placed in the town. Kevin said: “The night will be an opportunity for everyone to share memories
about Adrian. Every-one has their own stories about him. He was very eccentric and made his own clothes out of duct tape. “I believe Adrian used to be a university lecturer before becoming a road
sweeper for the council.” There will also be a raffle on the night. If anyone has any prizes to donate please take them to Imagine Toy Shop in Holmfirth. Officers investigating the assault on Adrian have charged a 30-year-old man with manslaughter in connection with the death. Jacob Crawshaw, of Emscote Avenue, Halifax, appeared before Bradford Magistrates’ Court on May 16. The case was transferred to Leeds Crown Court. A 23-year-old man, who was arrested in connection with the incident, has been released from police custody with no further action.
Post office apology after closure A POSTMASTER and postmistress have continued to serve residents – after a mix-up left Holmfirth Post Office closed. Mark Harper, who has run the town’s branch for 24 years, finished his contract on April 8 and had planned to move on. However, ‘difficulties’ were experienced and the shop was closed for two weeks before the couple reopened to take temporary charge. Mark said: “We are doing it on a week-by-week basis at the minute.” A Post Office spokesperson said: “We would like to apologise to the residents of Holmfirth for the inconvenience caused by the recent closure of the Post Office. We are extremely grateful to postmistress Pat Harper for agreeing to stay on and reopen the branch in order to provide access to Post Office services to the community. Pat will continue as postmistress until the new agent is able to take over.”
