New housing proposal for greenbelt
By Sandie Marshall GREENBELT land to the south of Honley could be used for a big new housing development. A report setting out the future of new housing in Kirklees is proposing releasing the greenbelt land for the development of 200 homes. In addition, the plan calls for 10 hectares of land in Brockholes and five hectares in Meltham to be made available for industrial and office development. Both sites are designated as ‘greenfield’ but only the Meltham land officially falls within the greenbelt. The proposals are set out in the latest Local Development
Framework report which was considered by the council’s Development and Environment Security Panel at the end of October. It looks at how the whole borough of Kirklees can accommodate 26,200 new homes and sufficient new industrial property to allow for 35,000 new jobs between now and 2028. The vast majority of building land is being identified in central Huddersfield and Northern Kirklees. However, the land identified for development in this latest report is significantly less than was originally proposed in 2009 – 1,700 new homes in and around Honley.

Public consultation made the council think again, and as a result, almost all the proposed houses are to be accommodated elsewhere in the borough. The report also calls for the number of new homes to be built in Holmfirth to be reduced to avoid “overdevelopment” of the town, although a final figure is not provided. Following discussion by the council committee, the report will once again go to public consultation between December 3 and January 31. Information will be provided in the council’s newsletter for residents and the framework document will be made available at key information sites throughout the borough.

Props from The Last of the Summer Wine are to get a permanent home in the Holme Valley. Among the many items given to the Holme Valley Business Association are pianos, a gorilla, a dinosaur, carriage, a scooter and even the bicycle that Marina often rode to her secret meetings with Howard. Business Association spokesman Greg Christoffi said: “We are considering different options for what to do with the props and scenery.”
