Village’s test run of camera is a success By Nicola Hyde

A TEST run of a new CCTV camera for a village that says it’s a sitting duck because of its archaic security system was so successful that it ended up catching a burglar. The community of Honley have been fundraising for two years to raise £25,000 to buy a new CCTV system for the village to replace the current system which is so outdated the footage is completely unusable. But even though it hasn’t been installed yet – it’s already had some success. June McLean, acting secretary for Honley Business Association and shop owner at Zebra Jewellery

on Westgate, said: “We had a company come and put a test camera up so we could see the quality of the CCTV. “While it was up, there was a burglary at Stylish Thoughts hairdressers. Police were able to apprehend the person thanks to that footage from the test camera so it’s clearly a benefit. “Businesses have their own alarms, and shutters and we are quite safe but if someone is up to high jinx, or speeding, or we had some people going round causing thousands of pounds of damage by scoring cars, then a camera might have prevented that.” The campaign, spear-

headed by the Honley Business Association, hopes that a fund-raising push for its Christmas event – as well as some grant applications – will see the CCTV system be installed in February. June added: “This is something that will protect the whole community – and not just businesses – from small crimes. “If we had these cameras perhaps people would be deterred from these petty crimes because they know they will be caught on camera. “It’s a small village but it’s something we need – the cameras currently provided by Kirklees Council are hopeless. “The image quality is so

poor that you wouldn’t be able to make out a car, never mind a car registration number. “The images are not useable, they are blurred and to be honest we’ve not been able to use them for years. “In that time, we’ve had some thefts. “We’ve had pensioners who have had their money taken off them when they’ve come out of the post office – but when police got the CCTV back the images were no good. “At the moment, we feel like we are sitting ducks.” To read more about Honley Business Association’s Christmas plans and how you can help, turn to page six.

A Holmfirth inventor who created a device that lets you take your goldfish for a walk is celebrating as it goes on sale to the public. Mike Warren-Madden – known locally as Lord Mike – has been working on the prototype for years and has now launched his fully customisable goldfish pram at a local pet shop. See page three for more.
