Residents urged to oppose houses plan By Olivia Taylor UP to 193 houses could be built on land in Scholes if locals don’t come forward shortly to express their objection. An application has been put forward to build an initial four out of 32 houses, and if left unchallenged this could open the door to a further 193 houses. If the plans are granted houses could be built from the corner of Scholes Moor Road / Sandygate up to the top end of Ryecroft Lane / Cross Lane. Holme Valley residents have come together to create a future group to fight against the large scale developments. A spokesperson from the group said: “We urge you to make your opposition to this application known to
Kirklees. “The new Kirklees Local Plan is just about to be published for comment. “If this application is approved before the new Local Plan is put out for comment, we will be denied our right to comment further on this land.” Locals against the plans flocked to a public meeting at Scholes Methodist Church Hall recently, with some attendees making financial pledges to protect the village and engage a specialist planning lawyer if necessary. The group has also got the backing from local MP Jason McCartney, who says villagers should not be accepting these speculative applications. He added: “Villagers are rightly worried that the application for these four houses is a Trojan horse
to allow a much larger development. “Hopefully we will not have long to wait until land designations are finalised in the Local Plan, with green spaces protected and suitable land for building allocated. “By putting forward an application at this time the developer seems to be trying to circumvent this process.” The chance to make your views known ends on October 12.
