Enthusiasts aim to change lives on record trip By Olivia Taylor A PAIR of inspirational fitness enthusiasts are doing their bit to change lives across the country, while attempting to break a world record. Motivational speaker Shaun Gash, who’s been in a wheelchair for 26 years following an accident which left him paralysed, and personal trainer Gavin Levitt will attempt to travel self propelled in wheelchairs from Land’s End to John O’ Groats in under 20 days, setting a new world record. On their travels, they will pass through 20 different towns and want to make an impact in each place, not only by supporting local charities and people in need, but by getting locals to make a commitment to changing the lives of others within their community. Gavin said: “We want to show people that they can get up off their backsides and do something with us. “We want teams to join in and get sponsored. Find a local charity close to your heart and we will raise money for them.” Gavin first met Shaun at an obstacle race in 2015 and since then the pair have gone on to
form a strong friendship, tackling various challenges together, including climbing Kilimanjaro. He added: “When I first saw Shaun I was in awe of how everyone in his team came together at the race, and I thought I want to do that, I want to be part of the team. “Now we’ve got a fantastic bond. He’s 100 per cent a lunatic so we fit together well. I’ve only known him two years but it feels like I’ve known him all my life. He inspires me and I think I just make him laugh. We bounce off each other.” The duo will leave Land’s End at 6am on August 9; arriving at John O Groats on August 27 and passing through places including Exeter, Gloucester, Warrington and Inverness en route. Able-bodied Gavin, who is also taking on the added challenge of taking part in a wheelchair, said: “I’ve got some funny looks while I’ve been training. “When I get out of the wheelchair normally people either look at me and think what on earth are you doing or they think it’s a miracle.” n Find out more or support the challenge at www.20twentychallenge.org.uk

Healthiest workers in the UK are revealed
Presenter, fitness expert and Wonder Woman Amazon Jenny Pacey and renowned fitness expert Dean Hodgkin will host the 2017 National Fitness Awards, Workout can reveal. Taking place at the Athena in Leicester on Friday December 1, the NFAs celebrate excellence in all parts of the sector, rewarding clubs and individuals for all their hard work, with over 20 trophies up for grabs. Enter now or find out more at www. nationalfitnessawards.co.uk and see page three for more details about this year’s event.
TRADESPEOPLE and fitness professionals are the healthiest workers in the UK, according to research. The survey of 2,014 UK adults by Ironmongery Direct revealed those working in trades such as plumbing, construction and electrical installation came out on top due to the nature of their jobs, which can see them being active for up to seven hours per day. According to the results, health and fitness professionals, such as personal trainers, are the second healthiest workers and are physically mobile for about five hours per day. Unsurprisingly those working in offices are the most sedentary, according to figures, with marketing, information and communications and call centre workers all failing to be active for an hour per day, burning less than 300 calories through work related activity. However, almost one in five UK workers ‘top up’ their activity levels with a weekly gym session. The rest of the top five healthiest industries was made up of agriculture, retail and manufacturing.

‘Tough Tribe’ challenge added to race calendar A NEW obstacle course race has been brought to the North West by Stockport based operator Life Leisure. Tough Tribe, a mixed terrain obstacle race with 5K and 10K versions, will take place on September 24 at Stockport Sports Village and is open to individuals and teams of all abilities, aged 16 and over. Operations director at Life Leisure Michaela Pennington has led on developing the event alongside experts from within the OCR world and hopes Tough Tribe will become a key date in the UK OCR calendar. Michaela said: “Obstacle course racing is the fastest growing mass participation sport in the UK, with around a quarter of a million people
taking part every year. But at the moment there aren’t that many that take place in the North West – we thought we’d change that! “Looking at the space and terrain we have at SSV, and having already seen a real appetite for OCR activity locally – with many of our members regularly signing up for national challenges – we set about developing an event that would have widespread appeal. “The course has been designed to challenge all fitness abilities, will run over open ground, woodland and urban zones, and feature a wide range of natural and manmade obstacles. Our hope is that the course will become a training venue for OCR enthusiasts following the event.”
The award winning spa at Seaham Hall has launched a selection of treatments for people living with or recovering from cancer. Working together with Made for Life Organics, there are three Cancer Touch Therapy treatments available at the spa; Catch the Breath, Soothe and Nurture and Hand on Heart. Spa director Davina Hassell said: “I’m delighted with the very comprehensive training we have received from the Made for Life team. We’ve already been overwhelmed by the response from cancer sufferers, and those in recovery, who have previously been turned away from other spas.”
Jason Eaton, director of theclub at Cadbury House, with North Somerset Athletics Academy founder Chris Millard.
Health club backs academy THE South West’s leading athletics academy has once again received backing from a supportive local health club. It’s the 10th year the North Somerset Athletics Academy has gained support from theclub at Cadbury House. Supported by 12 qualified coaches, the athletics academy, which boasts over 240 competing members, was set up in 2004 by Chris Millard who recognised there was a huge demand for athletics among young people in the area. The backing of the Congresburybased health club has, over the years, given those who take part added inspiration as they compete in places
such as Yeovil, Exeter, Stoke and even Milton Keynes, with members making use of the award-winning facilities. Chris said: “We’re delighted to receive the continued support from theclub at Cadbury House. When we launched we realised there was a growing demand for athletics but not in our wildest dreams did we think it would be so successful. “The goal is to provide opportunities for athletes of all abilities, ages and backgrounds so they can be the best they can within the sport of athletics. “Backing like this supports the professional approach by the academy and we’re looking forward to a very successful season.”

Personal trainer Esmee Gummer with Fi7ness creator Dean Hodgkin and Towie star Jess Wright (left). Jess says she has always struggled with her weight and fitness regime.
‘Inspirational’ PT turns former Towie star’s life upside down By Olivia Taylor
A PERSONAL trainer who overcame adversity after being paralysed from the waist down is now working alongside TV personality Jessica Wright; launching an innovative home workout programme. Esmee Gummer refused to believe doctors who told her she’d never walk again when a routine hernia operation left her paralysed. The 25-year-old regained use of her legs and was back on her feet after just one year. She said: “When you go through a trauma it makes you question your purpose in life. I was a dancer, that’s what I believed I’d been put on the Earth to do. I didn’t want to do anything else, but the accident made me realise that I was actually put here to help people.” Since then Esmee has made her
mark on the fitness industry, showing her clients that mental strength is just as important as the physical side of fitness. She added: “If you train hard and eat well and you want a six pack that’ll happen, that’s science, but I like to sculpt people’s minds too. I want to make people more confident. I get people emailing me telling me my fitness classes are like cheap counselling sessions.” Now Esmee is part of the ‘Fi7ness by Jessica Wright’ team, working alongside head trainer and programme creator Dean Hodgkin to give people a results based exercise solution. Dean added: “The premise for this workout is that it’s based on the seven primal movements and is therefore the workout your body was designed for and will make the most difference to the way you look.
“Jessica herself even struggled with some of the workouts, but it shows that with perseverance you can battle through even the toughest sessions, and achieve the results you desire in just seven weeks.” The seven-week Fi7ness programme gives buyers all they need to change their body and mindset in the comfort of their home. Each programme comes with an exercise ball, resistance tube, wall chart, Soulmatefood nutrition guide and DVD. Esmee added: “It’s accessible, anyone is going to be able to do this. You’re getting a personal trainer in the DVD. I’m personal training Jessica and it’s like you’re a fly on the wall. If you follow the programme five days a week of course it’s going to work.” Since completing the Fi7ness programme Jessica has not only seen her fitness improve, but her mindset
has completely changed. She added: “I have struggled with my weight and fitness regime for my entire life. I had a lack of motivation and determination which made me feel like I never achieved my true fitness potential. Then I met Esmee Gummer, my personal trainer, and my life has since been turned upside down, for the better.” The programme has seen Jessica go from seeing exercise as a chore to a motivated and focused person who pushes herself, even taking her Fi7ness kit with her on holiday. Esmee added: “The person she was on the first day I met her is completely different to who she is now. But I haven’t changed her, all I’ve done is remind her who she is. “It’s so great for me to see her with her shoulders back and her chest out. Jessica is an incredibly strong person.”

‘Retention starts in locker room’ says expert Justin By Christina Eccles
A fundraising Bodypump class has helped to raise over £1,300 for the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund. The event took place at iTrain Gym in Dukinfield and was created by fitness development officer at Active Tameside, Steph Mallett, who was inspired to act after she received the news that a young girl who her son coaches at swimming suffered serious injuries in the Manchester attack. Steph said: “It could have been any of us that were involved, or any of our children and I just wanted to do something to help. “I am astounded at how kind and generous everyone has been. The event was hard work and I couldn’t have done it without iTrain member Kayliegh Graham. I would do it all again to help, as it’s nothing compared to what those who were affected are going through.” Funds were also raised with a cake sale and raffle.
RETENTION starts in the locker room, according to an expert, who believes great leadership and a motivated workforce begins long before staff step on to the gym floor. Justin Tamsett, a former health club owner and well known business and leadership authority, was among the speakers at The Retention Convention, organised by Retention Guru Dr Paul Bedford. During his talk, Justin compared management to being a team coach; advising delegates that building retention starts off the field. He explained: “Once you’re on the pitch, trying to improve retention will be really hard because you’re in the heat of a battle. “It’s emotional and you can’t think straight – it’s very hard to coach players on the run. If you’re looking to improve retention you need to start in the locker room.” Justin also went on to explain the seven Cs needed for a successful business. These are: n Culture – the strength of a house is in its foundations. Employ people with the right attitude. n Contagious – a leader’s role is to have a positive energy that staff can feed off. n Consistency – in leadership style, behaviour, actions and, most

Trade show organisers announce revamp plan
The volunteers from three Anytime Fitness sites wore specially made kilts for the event.
Fundraising walk helps young people’s charity FUNDRAISERS from Anytime Fitness Glasgow West End, Clarkston and Bishopsbriggs walked 23 miles in purple kilts to raise money for A&M Scotland; a charity that improves life chances for young people in deprived areas of Scotland. The volunteers travelled by foot from Glasgow Green to Loch Lomond in just over seven hours as part of the Glasgow Kiltwalk, an annual fundraising event which takes place in several Scottish cities.
The team wore specially made Anytime Fitness themed kilts, as well as painting the Anytime Fitness Running Man logo onto their skin. Hugh Mullan, director and owner of the three Anytime Fitness clubs that took part, said: “We’ve been looking for a local charity to work with for some time and when we heard about the work of A&M Scotland on local radio we knew this was the ideal opportunity to get involved and give back to the local community.”
ORGANISERS of Leisure Industry Week have revealed plans to revamp this year’s event, with a re-brand and shift in focus to further engage with the fitness sector. As well as renewing a partnership with Pure Gym, Britain’s biggest gym operator, to produce their annual PT Conference, BP: Fitness Trade Show will also offer delegates workshops, practical demonstrations and seminars offering advice on business growth, member retention, change of use, profitability, secondary spend and the development of fitness professionals who are the driving force behind new industry investment. Key areas of the show will include: n Fitness Business School – focusing on marketing, sales, retention and new ideas to grow businesses in the fitness sector. n Practical Coaching – equipment and functional demos from leading trainers designed to offer fitness professionals new options and practical application for the benefit of clients and members. n BP Nutrition – exploring nutrition
solutions for all businesses including healthier menu choices and using nutrition as a key secondary spend opportunity. n 50+ Fitness – Britain’s ageing population is a massive market and active ageing is explored alongside the provision of a well-equipped fitness area in new and existing residential care facilities. n Workplace Fitness – develop a fitter, healthier workforce for improved productivity, energy and wellbeing. n Pool and Spa – Fitness solutions such as group aqua exercise classes for increased usage, targeting new demographics and the provision of equipment for both maintenance and fitness in a pool facility Managing director Steve Orton said: “We’ve successfully rejuvenated what was a stagnant show since our acquisition of LIW in 2015. However, in 2017 we wanted to really put our stamp on not just the show but also the industry. “BP: Fitness Trade Show will target a demographic of potential buyers and decision makers who are front-line in the delivery of fitness solutions in the UK. “Our focus is on the business of fitness and we are strategically aligned to be able to influence industry growth and provide an annual meeting place to drive business development.”

Advertiser’s announcement
Fitness Systems kits out new Otley gym NESTLED in the heart of the picturesque town of Otley, Club Energy is a small independent gym with some big ideas. With a strong community feel and a loyal member base, this wellestablished fitness club has recently moved around the corner to a larger facility. Prior to the move, the club had been at its old location since 1997, so the move coincides with 20 years trading at their old premises. The vision was to create a gym for the people of Otley that understood its client base but also reached out to the new by creating specific zones that allowed users to stay engaged and inspired to try and incorporate
modern training and teaching methods. Director Pat Cowdell said: “Since January we have marketed our move with success. Our membership base has steadily grown over the first part of the year in our old premises and the first two weeks into our new spot our member base continues to grow at a good rate. We currently have just shy of 1,000 members with targets in place to further grow our business.” Director Joanne Cowdell added: “Our club felt a little dated in our old location. This move came at a time when the club needed an uplift and needed to freshen up to attract new members and evolve with fitness trends.
“Our member base historically has been very loyal as our club has a strong community feel, almost a family feel. We are working hard to continue and maintain that feel at the same time as bringing the facilities up to date.” The new club boasts 11,000 sq ft of useable space for bootcamps and an outdoor boxing station added to the initial 10,000 sq ft blueprint. It also includes new class timetables with over 60 classes a week split between live instructor led and virtual content courtesy of MyZone, outdoor bootcamps and a 16-to-18 year old Apprenticeship Scheme in partnership with Lifetime Training. Director Gary Beaumont added: “We
looked around for a long time but chose to work with Fitness Systems because of the array of equipment. “They have many years’ experience and history in the supplying of high street chain fitness clubs as well as smaller independent gyms with full fit-outs. They offered lots of flexibility to trade in old equipment, brand our equipment and vast array of stock at very competitive rates. “They listened to our needs and their understanding of the pitfalls and industry requirements needed by a small independent to be successful. We look forward to repeat business through many years to come – the install team were exceptional with going the extra mile.”

Editor’s Comment TAKING part in a group exercise class is one of my favourite ways to work out. From Clubbercise to Zumba, Powerhoop to KETTFusion, I’ve been steadily working my way through many of the classes seen on club timetables around the country; some for my own interest and many more for our monthly challenge feature. With the industry constantly changing and new trends in fitness seeming to pop up every week (one of the latest is apparently a new craze for yoga with goats!), the popularity of group exercise classes never seems to fade. Generally offering a supportive atmosphere, the chance to make new friends and a fun environment where you almost forget how hard you’re working, group exercise has many benefits and in this issue, we focus on some of these in more detail. Our dedicated feature, starting on page 32 includes details of the hottest new products and exciting classes in this area, as well as news from operators who tell us what’s working well for them and how they stay
up to date with the latest group ex developments. Classes can also bring people together and help clubs to further engage with their local communities and fundraise for causes close to their hearts. A great example of that can be seen on page eight where a special Bodypump class at iTrain Gym in Dukinfield has helped to raise over £1,300 for the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund. A big well done to everyone involved with that! Another operator performing well when it comes to group exercise is SIV in Sheffield where a drive to involve as much as the community as possible in fitness has seen them introduce innovative classes such as Bollywood Fitness into their centres. I was really excited to go along to Hillsborough Leisure Centre to try this class out first hand – and I definitely wasn’t disappointed! Read my review on page 18 and if you have a class at your club which you’d like one of the Workout team to come down and try, we’d love you to get in touch.

THE number of UK swimming pools has continued to decline slightly over the last 12 months, according to the 2017 State of the UK Swimming Industry Report. The report shows that the number of swimming pool sites has dropped by 0.5 per cent and for the fifth year in a row, more swimming pool sites have closed than opened. According to figures, the UK’s leading operator by number of sites is public leisure trust GLL, with 122 swimming centres. They are followed by Nuffield Health in the private sector who have 110 clubs with a swimming pool. The 2017 report also highlights that 84 per cent of the UK population live within two miles of one of the 3,158 swimming pool sites. Key facts from the report included: ■ There are now 3,158 swimming sites in the UK, down from 3,173 last year. ■ 34 new public and private swimming pool sites opened, down from 40 in 2016. ■ Public pay and play fees have increased by three per cent over the last 12 months. Director of LeisureDB, which compiled the report, David Minton
said: “Despite another slight decline in overall swimming pool numbers, technology and water that have previously caused a few issues for innovators are finally beginning to come together. “New ideas and products to encourage swimming participation are emerging and it will be interesting to see how these developments impact the UK swimming pool market over the next 12 months.” ■ What do you think? Is swimming popular at your leisure centre or health club? What do you do to increase participation? Enter your business to win a top prize The new functional training area at Hatfield Leisure Centre that has been created as part of a £330,000 investment.
Membership and income grows at redeveloped Hatfield centres By Christina Eccles THE completion of redeveloped fitness facilities at Hatfield Leisure Centre and Hatfield Swim Centre have seen membership numbers and income grow for the first time in 18 months. A partnership between Finesse Leisure and Alliance Leisure, work began at both sites last December and were completed in March; with investment totalling £330,000. At Hatfield Leisure Centre, the dedicated ShapeMaster studio was relocated from the first floor to the ground floor, now occupying a previously underutilised space. This change has had a significant impact, making the activity both more visible and accessible. Relocating the ShapeMaster studio then provided an opportunity to remove internal walls in the gym to create an open plan space. This space has now been turned into a dedicated functional training and HIIT area accommodating two Wattbikes, two Technogym
SKILLMILL, two Octane Lateral-X and two Octane Seated X-Trainers. A group cycle studio was also created housing 18 Technogym bikes, along with specialist lighting to give the space a nightclub feel. Sales and marketing director at Finesse Leisure, Duwaine Sinclair, said: “Both leisure sites play an essential role in the provision of a wide selection of physical activity facilities for the local community. “Each year the centres welcome more than 400,000 visitors, but like most public sector leisure operators, the trust faces growing financial pressure. “This pressure was amplified last year when two shiny new budget gyms arrived on our doorstep. “The board recognised that growing the fitness membership would provide the biggest return on investment. As a result, it was decided to focus investment on improving the fitness provision. “To help us scope the works and manage the development project, we engaged Alliance Leisure, valuing
the company’s pedigree in the areas of regeneration and community engagement.” At the Swim Centre, the original workout space was divided in two by a partitioning wall. This was removed to create one, open plan space. New flooring was laid throughout; a Technogym Omnia installed to create functional training opportunities and two Wattbikes were added. Business development manager at Alliance Leisure, Tom Fairey, added: “The key to the success of the Hatfield project has been the clever reconfiguration of existing space and smart investment in some signature kit. This has totally changed the feel of the space and made it more attractive, inviting and accessible. “The developments at Hatfield prove that it’s not always necessary to invest millions to make a big difference. “Clever investment in key areas can generate significant returns and have a hugely positive impact on user experience.”
FITNESS professionals have been urged to shout about their businesses and enter a competition to win a new vehicle lease or cash prize. Van or pick-up driving businesses, no matter what their trade or profession, can put themselves forward for the Vanarama Van Hero awards, which recognise the hard work and dedication of the UK’s 4m van drivers. As well as the valuable business boost of being crowned Vanarama Van Hero 2017, the winner will also benefit from either a three-year van lease or £5,000 cash. Founder and CEO of Vanarama, Andy Alderson, said: “The UK’s on-demand economy means more and more people view van and pick up drivers as their heroes, as they’re constantly satisfying peoples’ demand for one-click purchase and convenient delivery. “Not to mention the many businesses from dog walkers to personal training instructors who provide invaluable services using a van or pick up to operate their day to day business. “Far too often van drivers get a bad press but the majority are hardworking family people running their own business. We want to celebrate their entrepreneurialism and reward them.” Whether they have gone above and beyond for their customers, mentored an amazing apprentice or worked hard for charity or their community, companies can shout about their successes by entering the awards via the Vanarama website before the July 31 deadline.

A fitness class with a Bollywood twist is proving popular at a leisure centre in Sheffield. Workout editor Christina Eccles gave it a try.
Bollywood Fitness sits on the timetable at Hillsborough Leisure Centre alongside other popular sessions from Les Mills and indoor cycling.
Class combines best of Indian dance with traditional moves BOLLYWOOD fans at Hillsborough Leisure Centre have been shimmying their way to fitness thanks to an innovative session which combines the best of Indian dance with more traditional exercise moves. Led by instructor Nisha Lall, the weekly classes have picked up a loyal following and are just one example of operator SIV’s drive to create a group exercise timetable which offers something for everyone in the local community. Group exercise research and innovation manager at SIV, Ayesha Mir, explained: “We’re always looking for something to add variety to our timetable and perhaps attract people who might not think about going to classes such as aerobics or step.
“We want them to try something different, which could then be a stepping stone to try something else.” Instructor Nisha Lall teaches a variety of dance classes in the local area and when approached by Ayesha to bring something similar into a leisure centre environment, she relished the chance to use her fitness background to adapt her routines to appeal to a wider audience. She added: “People like the combination of the moves and the music and to be able to combine that with fitness is great. “The feedback is that people are enjoying it. “They love the music and it’s
something different.” According to Ayesha, classes such as this are a great way to get people into exercise and encourage them to enjoy keeping fit, with Nisha’s Bollywood Fitness class sitting on the timetable at Hillsborough Leisure Centre alongside other popular sessions such as the Les Mills programmes and indoor cycling. And with a loyal following of ladies, this is a class which is going from strength to strength. She added: “Everyone needs to embrace fitness. The industry is getting better at bringing things in that are not considered ‘traditional’ fitness. “But if it gets people moving, it doesn’t matter.”
Instructor Nisha Lall.
Bollywood Fitness offered something refreshing BILLED as a dance workout with a touch of Indian joy, Bollywood Fitness is a class which adds a refreshing new element to the world of group exercise. A cardio workout incorporating catchy Bollywood and Bhangra moves, followed by dance conditioning and stretching, the class provides a great way to workout while learning something new. From first seeing this class promoted on the club’s
timetable, I really wanted to give it a try. It sounded really intriguing and lots of fun. And after trying it, I was definitely proved right! Combining different dance styles with a range of complementary genres and tempos of music, the class flows nicely from one element to the next and even for complete beginners, the moves were fairly easy to follow. Instructor Nisha and the rest of the group were also very
friendly and welcoming, which created a nice, non intimidating atmosphere – perfect for my first session. For fans of dance based workouts, it’s definitely something different to try and the combination of the traditional moves and the music definitely sets this class apart from many other group exercise concepts out there. It’s enjoyable, gets people moving and can act as a great first step into a gym for those
who may need a confidence boost before moving on to other classes. There’s also a strong social element to this session. Throughout the class, everyone was interacting with each other and afterwards I noticed many of the ladies had headed to the leisure centre cafe for a coffee and a chat. It’s impossible to leave this session without a smile on your face, so if you’re looking for a class which combines fitness with fun, it’s the perfect choice!

PTs help deaf community into fitness By Christina Eccles
An award winning outdoor adventure centre has introduced a fast growing activity to its portfolio. The aim of FootGolf, which combines elements of football and golf, is to get the football into the hole in as few kicks as possible. There are two different FootGolf courses available to visitors at Crieff Hydro’s Action Glen, both designed with the help of UK FootGolf. Visitors can choose between the family-friendly five-hole course for guests aged five and above and a separate nine-hole course, aimed at aged 12 and above. CEO of Crieff Hydro, Stephen Leckie, said: “We’ve invested around £40m in our facilities at Crieff Hydro in recent years and FootGolf is our latest proud addition to Action Glen. It’s a popular and fun sport which, we believe, will attract kids and adults alike.”
New boutique gym and PT facility opens at complex MANCHESTER based property company Bruntwood has announced a new boutique gym and personal training facility at its Riverside complex. FORM, the brainchild of personal trainers Libby Smith and Ben Wood, will boast a fully-equipped 2,200 sq ft gym, in addition to an outdoor astroturf training area. The facility will offer personalised programmes, as well as one to one and group personal training. Clients will also have access to online coaching via a private members’ section on the website. The pair have also commissioned Didsbury-based healthy eatery Bosu Body Bar to provide a range of freshly prepared, high protein meals for clients. Libby said: “At FORM we believe in breaking negative training habits and educating people on nutrition so that they better understand their own bodies, enabling them to reach their potential. “To reinforce the quality of our online education and coaching it was critical for us to find the right physical

TWO deaf personal trainers are making their mark on the industry by helping the deaf community get into fitness. David Edgington and Dean Chester set up The Deaf Gym Facebook group in 2014 to offer fitness support to deaf people. The group has now grown to almost 2,000 members and the pair, who work at Xercise4Less in Bolton, are working hard to help the deaf community overcome the barriers they face around going to the gym. David said: “People don’t come across meeting deaf people every day but people in the gym are starting to recognise me better and accepting me for who I am, which is really wonderful feeling that I’m part of that world. “There are 900,000 people that are severely and profoundly deaf in the UK. They aren’t getting enough access to exercise because they use British Sign Language as their first language. “This is one of the reasons deaf people have a high percentage of problems with both their mental health and physical health and I want to change that by eliminating the barriers of going to the gym.” Dean said that as going to the gym changed his own life, he now wants to pass his expertise on to others and show them that they can also find the confidence to attend gym sessions or see a personal trainer. He added: “My disability impacted on my everyday life significantly. Not only was I overweight, but I was also extremely low on confidence. “I’ve always been into fitness and nutrition and wanted to keep fit. I was disappointed with myself for letting my health slide. “Joining the gym completely changed my life. It helped me to build up my confidence and lose weight. Not only that, but it really opened up new doors for me, allowing me to engage with the ‘hearing community’
David Edgington and Dean Chester. so much more. “I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to put my degree to use and prove to other deaf individuals that anything is possible with the right mindset.” As well as the Facebook group with David, Dean also has a YouTube channel – Deaf Fitness and Nutrition. He added: “Many deaf people fall into the trap where they find themselves staying in all the time, not confident enough to join a gym with hearing people. I want to change that. “I believe they’ll be more confident if they have access to a deaf personal trainer, helping them to connect with the wider community more. “With these initiatives I hope to make exercise easily accessible to all deaf people, by passing on my advice and top tips. “I hope to continue pushing my business initiatives to help provide deaf people with equal opportunities in life.”

Advertiser’s announcement
How healthy is your gym? CUSTOMERS may join your gym for myriad reasons; from improving their general fitness or preparing for the summer season to looking for a healthy midweek hobby in the form of a fun exercise class. Indeed, an estimated 5.4m Brits are currently using health and fitness clubs across the UK and this is expected to rise to 6.5m by 2020 (Mintel, 2016) which is great for business. But if you’re not careful you may find that your customers leave with more than they signed up for, and as a gym owner you might be left dealing with some pretty serious consequences. No we’re not talking about free PT sessions, we’re talking about germs, and lots of them. Recent research from Fitrated and Channel 4’s ‘How to Stay Well’ series showed that everything from treadmills, exercise bikes, mats and free weights are all teeming with germs. In fact 70 per cent of gym equipment harbours over 360 times more bacteria than a loo seat. Studies showed traces of the potentially life-threatening bacteria Klebsiella and Staphaureus as well as gut bacteria from faeces. Shocking right? This means you could be inadvertently putting your customers at risk of illness or infection. How about a skin infection with that six pack sir? Or what about a cold to accompany those crunches? Not exactly the health and fitness package your customers were expecting! A nasty infection or
serious illness due to dirty equipment could result in a lost customer, as well as a bad reputation spreading in your local community as rapidly as those germs. In this new world of social media, one bad experience can erupt into a PR disaster quicker than a HIT session. With all this news about the cleanliness of gyms, clearly it’s not enough to rely on guests cleaning equipment by themselves anymore. As a gym owner you need to be proactively addressing these health concerns head on, providing the latest equipment and facilities
available and enabling easy use and access at the point of need. So what can you do about protecting gym goers and protecting yourself? n Have wipes or spray so customers can disinfect machines both before and after use. n Provide free antibacterial gel to enable quick and easy hand washing. n Post reminders about clean exercising practises around your facility, including changing areas and bathrooms. n Ensure staff are trained to regularly clean down
equipment rather than relying on customers themselves. Alcohol-based antibacterial gel is preferable to hand washing with soap and water as it is generally more effective at killing microorganisms. Providing this free of charge could give your gym that subtle point of difference from competitors as well as reassuring current and prospective customers that you take their health, in all forms, seriously. So stop, take stock, and think about how you can enhance the health of your gym today.

THERE are many facets to sales and marketing. The cost, extent and methods employed vary incredibly between businesses. SportSoft’s CRM system gives all its users the ability to get in front of their clients or prospects using a variety of marketing tools. Firstly within the system there are literally hundreds of ways to select a target list – there are nearly 100 fields for each record and any combination of fields can be used. For example, all male prospects, aged 18 to 29 living in the post code area HG2. Secondly, once your target list is
selected, using Microsoft Office you can either print a letter or address label, send an email or send a text message for the entire list in one go. If you prefer different software, you can export the list for use with a third party email marketing system like Mailchimp. If you want to go a stage further, the system can be integrated with a full email marketing system like Brief Your Market, which will not only allow you to create effective, device independent, scheduled newsletters and flyers, but also give you feedback on your campaign. Advertiser’s announcement
Fresh Active top 500 members with help from Ashbourne HAVING starred in the TV reality series “The Valleys” and working in many health clubs in the UK, fitness entrepreneurs Aron Williams and Liam Jenkins decided it was time to open their own club. “I’d looked at other gyms in the area and thought with the right kit and backing we could make a real good go of it,” said Liam. The aim was to provide a high end club at affordable prices. Having looked at a number of payment collection and software providers the guys decided to go with Ashbourne Membership Management. As well as looking after their payment collections and member payment queries Ashbourne also provided a complete software package included. “They simply charge a flat fee per successfully collected direct debit,” Liam explained. “Ashbourne talked to us about the best way to run a pre-sale campaign and set us up with a join online facility where we took an initial payment from the members and then their first dd payment was taken 30 days after we opened. “This meant we knew exactly how many members we had before we
even opened the doors.” Grant from Ashbourne added: “Too many clubs wait until they are almost ready to open before they start their pre-sale and are then playing catch-up in the first few weeks after opening. An online pre-sale works best about six-to-eight weeks out from opening and by having a limited number of memberships available creates the urgency that if people don’t join before you open they will miss out on such a great deal.” The guys from Fresh Active decided to go with both a 12-month option and a monthly rolling membership
so people didn’t have to sign into a contract. Having collected the payments from the pre-sale, Ashbourne transferred the funds to the club, allowing them to free up the cash to make the finishing touches. “It really helped getting the money into our accounts quickly so that we had the funds to make the club that bit different,” said Liam. Once the club opened the members were given their login details so they can book classes online. “The online booking facility frees up so much time at reception. The members simply log into the branded
app and book a class. “We also don’t have the issue of members forgetting their membership cards as Ashbourne software is compatible with finger print entry,” explained Aron. Ashbourne also provide Fresh Active with epos till software which tracks the clubs secondary spend and stock control. “It’s great… is so easy for our staff to use but gives us vital reporting data.” With the club being open for a couple of months now, the guys are looking at saving their reception staff even more time by installing some access control. Ian Boeley from Ashbourne’s installation team explains that most clubs want a simple and affordable access control system. He added: “After a site survey we provide various options that will fit the customers’ needs and budget. “We are even able to spread the costs over a few months for our customers making it even more affordable.” Ashbourne provide direct debit payment collection and supply a complete club software package included. Manager proves value of apprenticeship pathway By Christina Eccles
Freestyle Olympic skier Rowan Cheshire has appointed Future Fit Training to pursue her personal training qualification. With her career taking her all over the world, Rowan needed flexibility when it came to her studies; choosing Future Fit as the course enables her to study online from wherever she is training or competing. Rowan said: “I’ve always been passionate about sport and fitness, so a natural career progression for me would be to move into the industry. I was doing my research online and came across Future Fit Training: its courses seemed really in-depth and being able to study online at my own pace made it ideal to fit around my training and competition schedule.”
A NEWLY promoted fitness manager has revealed the value of following an apprenticeship pathway after quickly rising through the ranks. Megan Hedges joined Everyone Active in September 2014 as an apprentice. An active youngster and teenager, she had competed for her school sports teams and undertook work experience at her local gym. seemed ideal for Megan and she particularly liked the option offered by Everyone Active. She explained: “What really attracted me to the Everyone Active programme was that it had a clear pathway for me to follow. “I could see the opportunity to gain my personal training qualification and develop my skills while earning some money too.” Throughout her time on the Everyone Active apprenticeship programme, Megan developed a wide variety of skills and gained formal qualifications. She added: “My entire experience at Everyone Active since starting out as an apprentice at Spelthorne Leisure Centre has been beneficial. “Prior to joining the programme I was quite shy and nervous but the scheme really developed my confidence. “I’ve especially enjoyed interacting with members on the gym floor every day as this has allowed me to put my theoretical knowledge straight into practice. “The whole team at Everyone Active has been really supportive. Completing each stage of my training at the same facility allowed me to develop a strong rapport with our customers. “It also meant that as soon as I
Megan Hedges was qualified, I already had a good understanding and knowledge of our customers and was already helping them on their fitness journey. “To now be the fitness manager at Spelthorne Leisure Centre means I can build on the relationships I have here with colleagues and customers. “I am relishing this new role as it will enable me to enhance the fitness offering at Spelthorne and reach out to people within our community who perhaps haven’t engaged with Everyone Active yet. Heat Map technology added to LFconnect digital platform MT3 Fitness is a finalist LIFE Fitness has launched Heat Map, an expansion of its LFconnect digital platform which helps fitness facility managers visualise traffic to and usage of their cardio equipment. Heat Map technology helps managers alternate machines based on usage and alter floor layouts and traffic paths to increase traffic to promoted areas. By visually representing how equipment is used, this technology helps managers create more customer-centric fitness centres. Director of digital experience at Life Fitness Amad Amin said: “The Heat Map is an important step in data visualisation. “Connectivity and stats are essentials to a connected fitness solution, but visually seeing usage and determining traffic patterns is the next step in this evolution. “Heat Maps allow club owners to understand what locations exercisers
gravitate to within their gym. “This can help provide insight such as optimum product placement, and even special staff members to help exercisers with their workouts.” By signing up and logging into an LFconnect account, managers can set up, name and place their Life Fitness connected equipment on a grid that resembles their specific gym layout. The grid can accurately mirror any fitness room, with the ability to include empty blocks that represent elements such as a front desk or aisle. Amad added: “We want our customers to get the most possible value from purchasing our equipment. The LFconnect suite digitises Life Fitness machines as part of our commitment to improving the customer experience. “We’re giving our customers the tools they need to actively manage their inventory and optimise their club experience.”
