Separation, Hybridisation, and Networks
Globular Amphora Sedentary Pastoralists ca. 3200–2700 BCE
By Johannes MüllerExplores the creation of networks in prehistoric Europe, focussing on Globular Amphorae pastoralists. Around 3000 BCE, a turning point occurred in Europe: Long-existing regional societies entered into a process of transformation. The result is a world in which new global communication networks brought different regions closer together. From 3200/3100 BCE, the Globular Amphora phenomenon (GA) was the trailblazer in Eastern and Central Europe. Due to a focus on pastoral subsistence, in comparison to more agrarian economic systems, new ritual practices formed in light of a more flexible form of settlement.

Before Temples
Rectangular structures of the Low Countries and their place in the Iron Age belief system
By Roosje de LeeuweStudy of the use of rectangular structures and related deposition practices in the Iron Age Low Countries. Before the introduction of Roman temples in the Low Countries, there used to be ‘open air cult places’ in the Iron Age. In this thesis the use of rectangular structures during the Iron Age is explored and the meaning of related depositions interpreted. The structures fulfilled a special sociocultural position in Iron Age society, emphasised by the deliberately chosen liminal location in an increasingly structured landscape.

Exploring Writing Systems and Practices in the Bronze Age Aegean
By Philippa M. SteeleInnovative and interdisciplinary exploration of writing practices in the Bronze Age Aegean.
Writing does not begin and end with the encoding of an idea into a group of symbols. It is practised by people who have learnt its principles and acquired the tools and skills for doing it, in a particular context that affects what they do and how they do it. Focusing on the syllabic systems of Bronze Age Greece, this book brings together different perspectives to create an innovative interdisciplinary outlook on what is involved in writing.

Bronze Age Rock Art in Iberia and Scandinavia
Words, Warriors, and Long-distance Metal Trade
By Johan Ling, Marta Díaz-Guardamino, Christian Horn, John Koch, Zofia Anna Stos-GaleCritical examination of similarities in Late Bronze Age Iberian ‘warrior’ stelae and Scandinavian rock art, focusing on socio-economic and linguistic contexts in which this iconography emerged.
This book is a new evaluation of the iconographic, linguistic and socio-economic connections between two geographically separated regions of north-west Europe in the Late Bronze Age. It examines the evidence for exchange of goods over long distances between Scandinavia and the Atlantic West using isotopic and chemical signatures of copper and amber artefacts alongside consideration of modes of production and transport. It also re-examines warrior imagery within Bronze Age rock art traditions from across Atlantic Europe and reflects on the status and concept of warriorhood at that period.

Artefact Biographies from Mesolithic and Neolithic Europe and Beyond Papers in Honour of Professor Annelou van Gijn
Edited by Annemieke Verbaas, Geeske Langejans, Aimée Little, Ben ChanIn this volume several papers are presented considering the whole range of artefact studies, from conception to death and from amber to bone and stone.
This volume has been written in honour of Professor Annelou van Gijn in order to celebrate her distinguished career as an archaeologist and, above all, as an expert in the study of material culture. Annelou started her research with the use-wear analysis of prehistoric flint from the Netherlands, and she extended her interests in every possible direction: time, space, materials and technologies. This volume has been compiled to reflect the broad oeuvre of her work. It focuses on the biographies of a wide range of artefact types made from an equally wide range of materials from Mesolithic and Neolithic Europe, but also glimpses beyond into other periods and geographic regions.

Epistemology, Economics, and Ethics
A Practical Philosophy of Prehistoric Archaeology
Konrad OttProvides a groundwork for theories of archaic history, transformations, and connectivity between the past and the present.
Divided into four parts, the first part of this volume is epistemological. It explains why there must be theoretical investments if past ways of human life are to be understood and explained. The second part makes a specific investment: original historical materialism. It claims that the Neolithic transformation makes humans economic agents. The third part claims that the Anthropocene originates within the Neolithic transformation. This concept grounds the fourth part that asks for ethical principles for a “good” Anthropocene in different fields of policy-making. A focus is laid on adaptation to climatic change. Some ethical building blocks for a second axial age are proposed. The book concludes with reflections upon heterarchical modes of life and upon the lifeworld of practical reasons.

Edited by Mike Parker Pearson, Alison Sheridon, Mandy Jay, Andrew Chamberlain, Jane Evans
New in paperback edition of this first comprehensive analysis of a large database of skeletal material from Beaker graves employing DNA, isotope, dental microwear and radiocarbon analyses.
This lavishly illustrated book presents the results of a major project that sought to address a century-old question about the people who were buried with Beakers a – the distinctive pottery of Continental origin that was current, predominantly in equally distinctive burials, in Britain from around 2450 BC. Who were these people? Were they immigrants and how far did they move around? What did they eat? What was their lifestyle? How do they compare with Britain’s earlier inhabitants and with contemporaries who did not use Beaker pottery? An international team of leading archaeologists and scientists, led by Professor Mike Parker Pearson, was assembled to address these questions.

The Oxbow Classics in Egyptology series makes a selection of important resources available again in print for a new generation of students and scholars. The titles included in this series continue to be invaluable sources of basic data, providing an unparalleled resource that can easily be cross-referenced with many of the actual materials they describe and discuss.
The series includes facsimile re-issues of typological catalogues produced by W. M. Flinders Petrie based on his vast collection of Egyptian artefacts. As historic documents, the Petrie catalogues stand as exemplars of the craft of typological classification, the backbone of modern archaeology – much of which, though refined by absolute dating and another 100 years of research, still stands the test of time.
Stone and Metal Vases

This volume was a first attempt by Petrie to take an overview of the vessels recovered from numerous locations housed in major collections of the time. Dating was derived from a variety of sources, the most important being that of royal names either on the vessels themselves or on associated materials in tombs. Vessels are arranged by major typological form with a discussion on derivation, chronological development in form and decoration and modes of manufacture.

New Perspectives on Ancient Nubia
Edited by Solange Ashby, Aaron BrodyHighlights African achievements and dominance in the ancient world, with Nubia at the centre. Ancient Nubia played key political, social, and economic roles in the ancient world, yet knowledge of Nubian societies remains regrettably narrow, with Nubia often disregarded as derivative of Egypt. This volume provides a timely corrective to this outlook, centering Nubian history and archaeology and presenting research from postcolonial and anti-racist perspectives. In addition to demonstrating Nubiology’s potential impact on Egyptological, classical, and biblical scholarship, this volume offers a new window into African achievements and dominance in the ancient world.

Edited by Catherine M. Draycott, Scott Branting, Joseph W. Lehner, Yasemin ÖzarslanCollected essays on aspects of Iron Age Anatolian culture and history, with a focus on the murky period between 700 and 550 BC.
The discoveries of Geoffrey and Francoise Summers’s project at the massive walled city on Kerkenes Dağı have changed the cultural history and texture of Anatolia during this time period, opening up insights into the spread of Phrygian culture and language and inviting further discussion of how the period is framed. This book honours their accomplishments by presenting papers addressing the dynamics and events of that period from various angles, and in various regions and places, as well as other interventions on Iron Age Anatolia, from dating of kings to rare and potentially influential medical techniques.

The Iseum of the Royal Island of Antirodos Excavations in the Portus Magnum of Alexandria
By Franck GoddioExamines the archaeological remains from the temple that identify it as an Iseum and discusses its changing role in late Hellenistic and early Roman Alexandria.
The island of Antirhodos, isolated from the contemporary Alexandrian shoreline, was according to Strabo the property of kings (Geography 17.1.9). In the third century BC the Ptolemies built a palace and on a monumental quayside a temple dedicated to the goddess Isis. In around AD 50, the temple came crashing into the waters of the Portus Magnus on either side of the quayside. These collapse deposits, including important pieces of sculpture, objects from the temple treasury and remnants of its architecture and decoration, were largely protected from the recycling of the remains of the temple that on land.

The Roman Imperial Succession
By John D. GraingerAnalyses the Roman imperial succession and the failure to come up with an enduring, consistent system for selecting the next emperor.
John D. Grainger presents a critical analysis of the flawed Roman imperial succession system established by Augustus. Grainger argues that the empire’s method of selecting emperors through a mix of heredity, senatorial, and military influences led to frequent crises and bouts of civil war. Using the infamous “Year of the Four Emperors” as a focal point, Grainger examines the consequences of these crises and their impact on the stability of the empire.

The Senate briefly regained influence under Alexander Severus but was thwarted by Maximinus, leading to the Senate’s ultimate decline and the consolidation of imperial autocracy by Gallienus in the 260s.

The excavated area contained one complete property and fragments of three of its neighbours. The timber-framed buildings within the complete property consisted of a row of three — a rectangular kitchen, a townhouse and a roundhouse — separated by a yard from a re-built taberna, also diagonal to the street on which it fronted. The surgical and writing instruments associated with the circular building suggested it functioned as a healer’s and/or teacher’s house.

Although household goods are a well-established topic in Medieval and Early Modern archaeology, more recent research is overcoming simple typological and technological aspects and pointing to broader approaches, which relates to the understanding of goods’ production, consumption strategies, other economic activities and structures of social organization. Thus, the understanding of past societies and cultures relies heavily in the study of their household goods to understand people, groups and societies.

Northwold Manor Reborn
Architecture, Archaeology and Restoration of a Derelict Norfolk House
By Warwick RodwellAccount of the rescue and study of a 17th century Grade II* Listed Building complex in Norfolk encompassing archaeology, history, genealogy, restoration and sympathetic rehabilitation. Northwold Manor Reborn presents a fascinating, superbly illustrated, account by one of the UK’s leading architectural historians, of the history, dereliction and restoration of a complex, originally Tudor, manor house. This book demonstrates and explains by example the need for full research and recording prior to restoration of historic houses and how to undertake sensitive and historically referenced updates. The author describes the investigation, recording and restoration of the principal elements of the manor complex. It is a book like no other: the holistic approach to the rehabilitation of Northwold’s derelict manor house – involving history, archaeology, architecture and genealogy – demonstrates how much can be learned about a building that had never before been studied.

Significant contribution to the field of survey pottery studies.
This book is a significant contribution to the field of survey pottery studies, which is not frequently theorised, and could also serve as a guide and provide inspiration to archaeologists designing their own survey projects and methodologies. Most contributions provide an insight in collection, processing and interpretation practices in a specific survey project, and we hope this transparency is inspiring and contributes to a better understanding of surface ceramics as a basis for historical interpretations.

Edited by Thomas Dähnhardt, Giovanni De ZorziHighlights aspects of the spiritual culture within Islam that flourished along the ‘Silk Roads’.
The movement of goods and of people was accompanied by the circulation of ideas, bringing about a vivid exchange in the cultural sphere – sufism, or tasawwuf, was one such idea. Focusing on this theme, these conference proceedings draw attention to the multiple dimensions embraced by tasawwuf, both in its temporal (i.e. historical, ethnographical and social) context, as well as its atemporal one (i.e. concerning spirituality and the ways this is conveyed and transmitted, both in the past and in the present).

SCIENCE
Evolutions and Religious Traditions in the Long Nineteenth Century
National and Transnational Histories
Edited by Bernard Lightman, Sarah QidwaiTakes a local, national, transnational, and global approach to the study of science and religion. This volume draws attention to European scientists other than Darwin who played a significant role in the dissemination of evolutionary ideas; for some, those ideas provided the key to understanding every aspect of human culture, including religion. They also highlight central figures in national contexts, many of whom were not scientists, who appropriated scientific theories for their own purposes. This book begins to capture the complexity of cultural engagement with evolution and religion in the long nineteenth century.

By Alexander SchmemannA very timely history of Russian culture and its particular trends and tendencies. At a time when tensions between Russia and “the West ‘’ are increasing, this book is very timely, even though, its contents were first broadcast over fifty years ago. It offers a history of Russian culture and its particular trends and tendencies, which are shown to be frequently contradictory and even mutually exclusive. Schmemann argues for the supremacy of culture over political life in determining questions such as the apparent lack of political freedoms, law and order and civil rights in a Russian context.

Recent Discoveries of Tetrarchic Hoards from Roman Britain and their Wider Context
Edited by Eleanor GheyA new look at coinage of the Tetrarchic period through the study of two recent coin hoard discoveries.
This volume was prompted by the recent discovery in Britain of two large coin hoards dating from the first decade of the fourth century AD – Wold Newton and Rauceby. Coins of this early Tetrarchic period are relatively uncommon finds in Britain and elsewhere, due mainly to the brevity of their periods of issue followed by successive reductions in the weight of the coinage. The book also republishes the 1944 Fyfield hoard within the context of these more recent finds.

British Celtic Coins: Art or Imitation?
By Tim WrightA book that counters the narratives that have shaped our perceptions of British Celtic Coins.
The peoples of pre-Roman Britain remain an enigma. Our perceptions are shaped by two narratives, that of contemporary Roman colonists and more recent Celtic nationalists, who vilify and glorify them in equal measure. The coins from this period are no less controversial, and indeed some to dismiss the coins of pre-Roman Britain as inferior. The most compelling counter to this is the coins themselves, explored through the theme of Art or Imitation? What we find is extraordinary variety and originality, that makes a powerful case for their collection and study.

The Long War for Britannia, 367–664
Arthur and the History of Post-Roman Britain
By Edwin PaceResolves dating discrepancies between the various sources for this period, restoring their collective credibility.
The Long War for Britannia sheds light on two centuries of overlooked British history, debunking misconceptions about its authenticity. It reveals that discrepancies in early records are due to later dating systems, not fabrication. Moreover, it challenges the perception of King Arthur and Uther Pendragon as mere medieval myths, presenting evidence of their real, albeit divergent, roles in post-Roman Britain. These authentic yet varied narratives reshape our understanding of British history.

Battlescapes
The Impact of Terrain on War and Military Strategy
By Ian D. RotherhamHighly illustrated with 350 colour and black and white photographs.
Throughout history, landscapes have played a pivotal role in shaping the tactics and outcomes of warfare. From the medieval English Fens to the 20th-century Iraqi Marsh Arabs, nature’s resources and terrain have influenced strategies and fostered resistance. Waterlogged environments like the Florida Everglades and Dutch polders halted campaigns, while mountain ranges and deserts provided havens for resistance fighters in places like Afghanistan and Yugoslavia. This comprehensive study explores how landscapes have shaped conflicts and influenced military operations worldwide.

The Third Macedonian War and Battle of Pydna Perseus’ Neglect of Combined-arms Tactics and the Real Reasons for the Roman Victory
By Graham WrightsonA fascinating and thoroughly researched study of these dramatic events that adds fresh insight to the question of the legion’s supposed innate supremacy over the phalanx.
Graham Wrightson challenges the conventional view of the Third Roman-Macedonian War, arguing that the blame for Macedon’s defeat lies with King Perseus rather than inherent Roman superiority. Through meticulous analysis of primary sources, Wrightson examines Perseus’ military decisions and strategies, highlighting his hesitancy and mishandling of the Macedonian army’s combined-arms tactics. Wrightson emphasizes Perseus’ failure to utilize cavalry effectively, ultimately shedding new light on the dynamics between Roman legionary tactics and the Macedonian phalanx.

The Art of Conservation
Edited by Jane Martineau, David BomfordThis fascinating volume presents a wide-ranging overview of one of the lesser known yet fundamental disciplines of Art History: conservation.
What happens when art ages? By bringing together some of the leading experts in the field, the essays chart a journey through the theoretical, aesthetic and technical debates surrounding the conservation of Old Masters. The problem of how to look after paintings as they grow old is a historically complex one. Should they be ‘restored’ to their original glory, or should the patina of time be acknowledged? What is to be done with damp and dirt, with rotten panels and yellowing varnishes? The development of conservation is profoundly entwined with the development of Art History itself, as both deal in the interpretation of the past and its preservation for the future. The seventeen essays collected by editors Jane Martineau and David Bomford, which originally appeared in The Burlington Magazine, explore how these questions have been answered from the mid-sixteenth century to the present day.
