The importance of chemical testing for footwear Product safety is paramount and, with many products sourced from the global marketplace, it can be difficult to keep abreast of what is required in different parts of the world in terms of legislation on chemicals and restricted substances. This can be a veritable minefield and has the potential to be costly in terms of finance and reputation. Are you aware of the different legislation which applies to your footwear? Does your company have a testing programme to ensure that your footwear does not contain hazardous chemicals? Is your footwear fit for purpose? These questions are particularly important when dealing with children’s footwear. Depending on where your customers are located you will need to be familiar with the following: United States CPSIA - the consumer product safety improvement act of 2008 controls the amount of lead and phthalates in consumer products intended primarily for children 12 years old or under. Proposition 65 is an initiative to address growing concerns about exposure to toxic chemicals. It covers all products and services distributed in the State of California and requires that warnings via labelling, newspaper notices, etc are issued relating to chemicals on the Proposition 65 list, which includes over 800 chemicals. Europe REACH – deals with the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical substances and all products supplied within Europe must be compliant, in particular substances identified as being of very high concern (SVHCs). China GB standards are mandatory for leather products sold into China and brands in breach of GB standards may have their products seized from stores. To ensure consistent quality and performance for footwear, BLC recommends that you set realistic specifications, coupled with a sensible and balanced chemical testing regime in line with current legislation and industry standards. How does the Technology Work? A new GORE-TEX® laminate that allows the entire foot to breathe as well as remaining durably waterproof, forms an integral part of the shoe’s construction. A unique open sole structure has been designed into the footwear. This allows excess heat and sweat to pass through the GORETEX® membrane and to the outside of the shoe. The openings in the sole and the GORE-TEX® membrane are protected by a robust non-woven fabric which prevents the membrane from being pierced by for example, walking over stones or sharp objects, so protecting the wearer from any discomfort. Winter 12 from Gant Footwear Winter 12 sees the continuation of a great range of classic styling from Gant Footwear.
