Sport for Confidence receives top honour at Occupational Therapy Excellence Awards

SPORT for Confidence CIC has been announced as winner in the ‘Excellence In Emerging Roles’ category at the national Occupational Therapy Excellence Awards for its pioneering work hardwiring occupational therapy driven services into community sport and leisure settings.

The Occupational Therapy Excellence Awards recognise and reward the very best in occupational therapy, showcasing practices, companies and individuals that enable people to enjoy a better life.

Winners were announced at a ceremony at the National Conference Centre, Solihull.

“It’s absolutely fantastic to win this particular award because it represents professional recognition from the occupational therapy community for the groundbreaking work we are delivering, using physical activity to drive positive occupational outcomes and tackle health inequalities,” said Lisa Westhorpe, occupational therapist, National Team, Sport for Confidence.

“Occupational therapists typically work within the NHS or social care sectors, where physical activity is rarely a part of their practice. At Sport For

Confidence we are pioneering a new approach that embeds physical activity into occupational therapy.

“Through lectures, student placements, our community of practice, partnerships and events, we actively share our insights and successes with the wider occupational therapy community.

“This equips occupational therapy students, OT support workers and registered occupational therapists with the skills and confidence they need to use physical activity not just to deliver leisure occupations, but

also as a powerful tool for assessment, intervention, and engagement in therapy. It is this groundbreaking work that this award recognises.”

In addition to winning the ‘Excellence in Emerging Roles’ award, Sport for Confidence was also a finalist in the ‘Most Innovative Use of Practice’ award for the organisation’s partnership with Essex Country Council that delivered a two-year test and learn pilot to measure the positive impact of embedding physical activity into a whole system approach to adult health and social care.

Protecting the world, one sip at a time

IN A drive to support healthy hydration habits, Taylor Made Designs (TMD) has launched a range of drinks bottles, including the new eco-friendly Ocean Bottle, to provide always-at-hand hydration solutions that are good for the planet as well as the individual.

For every Ocean Bottle sold, the manufacturer funds the collection of 11.4kg of ocean-bound plastic, the equivalent to 1,000 plastic bottles.

This is helping to tackle the increasing environmental problems associated with the release of plastic into our oceans and improves the livelihoods in coastal communities.

The bottle itself is entirely carbon neutral, manufactured largely from recycled stainless steel, with the ability to keep drinks hot or cold for up to 8 hours. It is also fully customisable.

James Taylor, MD at TMD, said: “Stainless steel drinks bottles provide a more sustainable alternative to plastic bottles. They also perform better in terms of their ability to keep drinks hot or cold for longer making the whole drinking experience more pleasurable.

“At TMD we take our environmental responsibility very seriously and are actively encouraging our customers to make purchasing choices based

on the environmental impact.

“We love these Ocean Bottles because they align with our ambition to create a more sustainable future.”

In addition to the Ocean Bottles, TMD provides a range of alternative customisable drinks bottles to suit every need and budget.

James continues: “Hydration is so important to health. According to the Eatwell Guide referenced on the NHS website, we should all be aiming to drink between six and eight glasses of fluid – preferably water, per day.

“Having a stylish drinks bottle at hand makes it super easy to always have access to fluids and to ensure dehydration does not become a problem.”

Chain partners with Funxtion to transform its training spaces

IMPULSE, a chain of training centres in Norway, has partnered with Funxtion, digital fitness solutions pioneers, to transform its training spaces into connected digital fitness ecosystems that serve members wherever they are located.

Having initially revolutionised a hybrid movement to its offering in response to the pandemic, which forced the fitness industry into a new digital era, Impulse has continued to innovate and has now integrated a wraparound digital solution that keeps members connected, both inside and outside of their facilities, 24/7.

This partnership launched with Impulse Online, a white label digital training app from Funxtion which provided a comprehensive platform delivering a wide array of fitness content anywhere, anytime.

The success of this implementation, initially at a crucial time during the pandemic, and continued afterwards, also provides ‘always on’ digital coaching within Impulse clubs via both Funxtion multi-screen and single-screen systems.

Jamie Hellier, digital member engagement manager and team leader personal training at Impulse, said: “We wanted to partner with

a company that would deliver a product of the very highest level of functionality, provide an unmatched visual experience for our members that sets our offer apart from local and national competition and showcases exercise demonstrations that are technically perfect in their execution. Funxtion’s multifaceted solutions enables us to tick every one of these boxes.”

“By implementing the Funxtion in-club solution, we are also able to blend the digital with the physical by introducing visually engaging workout zones including ‘Core and Flex’ and a ‘Functional Zone’.

“These zones perfectly fuse the buzz of physical workouts with high quality digital coaching to create a training environment aligned to goal achievement and satisfaction that keeps members wanting to return for more.

Jamie added: “Since we created zoned areas within the gym using the Funxtion in-club solution, we have seen a digital workout usage surge, leaping to 253 per cent more digital workouts in 2024 than in 2023. We anticipate that this will continue to rise as the group exercise timetable is linked up to our new member app.”

The multi-screen solutions enable small groups of people to train together whilst the singlescreens provide a popular holistic experience in the form of recovery stations, with equipment and content focused on mobility, stretch and yoga.

Using Funxtion’s multi-screen station solutions, Impulse has taken a ground-breaking leap forward with the launch of Norway’s first fully digital group exercise schedule at its site in Nardobakken. This innovative approach caters to a wide audience, from those who are just starting their fitness journey through to seasoned and experienced members.

Danny Woods, chief commercial officer at Funxtion, added: “The success of our partnership with Impulse is testament to the creative thinking of its team and the power of innovation within the fitness industry.

“Through a combination of our digital solutions, tailored content and a keen eye for design, they have created an unmatched member journey and experience that has rocketed their member engagement and workout usage both in and outside the bricks-and-mortar of the clubs.”

ukactive warns of impact as Scottish adults reveal physical activity decline

SCOTLAND is the only nation in the UK where a larger proportion of adults admit they are less physically active than they were five years ago, according to a survey from ukactive.

The findings show that 44 per cent of Scottish adults say they are moving less than they were five years ago in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic – suggesting that activity levels in the country could be on the decline.

Polling organisation Savanta found that in contrast, just 21 per cent of Scots think they are moving more than they did five years ago, which could have grave implications for the NHS as well as lost working days due to sickness.

Clemency Lion, director of research, policy and communications at ukactive, said: “Our polling shows a troubling picture for Scotland’s physical activity levels and this will have a major impact on the health of the nation, which also has serious implications for economic productivity and growth.

“We want to see our political leaders urgently address physical inactivity to support the physical and mental health of the nation, which would lead to a more prosperous economy, reduced pressures on the health service and improve social cohesion within communities.

“Gyms, leisure centres and pools play an essential role in supporting health and wellbeing and we’re committed to working with both the UK and Scottish

Governments to ensure our sector is deployed to meet the biggest challenges they face today.”

The data shows that of the other nations, in England, 32 per cent think they are moving less than they were five years ago, and the figure was the same for those from Northern Ireland.

In Wales, this was only slightly higher, with 34 per cent saying they are moving less than five years ago.

In 2019 the Scottish Health Survey showed that 66 per cent of Scottish adults met the Chief Medical Officers’ recommendation of at least 150 minutes (two-and-a-half hours) of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity a week.

In 2022, the figure dropped to 65 per cent and for those that failed to meet the

recommendation, the main reasons given were that their health was not good enough (41 per cent), it was difficult to find time (22 per cent) and not being interested (20 per cent).

ukactive is calling on the main party leaders to urgently address physical inactivity in Scotland by looking at ways to drive participation and support the physical activity sector to grow and reach more people.

It is calling on the Government to support the sector in building a long-term vision for facilities to support as many people as possible in accessing spaces to keep active.

This can be achieved in part by the Government supporting the sector to grow through a permanent reduction in VAT for the sector, and a sustainable strategy for public leisure.

New £13.5m leisure and learning hub spearheads coastal town regeneration

THE launch of Mablethorpe’s new Station Leisure & Learning Centre marks the start of a once-in-ageneration transformation of the Lincolnshire seaside town.

Delivered by Alliance Leisure, the development aims to address the town’s poor health and educational outcomes, while delivering benefits for visitors and the local economy.

Mablethorpe’s health ranking is in the lowest 12 per cent of towns in England with significant levels of frailty amongst its older population.

The area also suffers with poor levels of educational attainment and skills, while 58 per cent of the working population are economically inactive compared to 20 per cent in England.

The multi-functional community development, designed by architects Pozzoni, was managed by Alliance Leisure through the UK Leisure Framework, owned and managed by Denbighshire Leisure Ltd, with ISG as principle building contractor.

Sean Nolan, business development manager at Alliance Leisure, said:

“The launch of Station Leisure & Learning Centre marks a turning point for Mablethorpe.

“The impressive facility will transform this small town, enhancing the health, wellbeing and education of residents, while also acting as a catalyst for wider regeneration.”

Located on the high street with its own car park, the new £13.5m Station Leisure & Learning Centre replaces Station Sports Centre and provides the town with its first public swimming pool offering swimming lessons, family swims, school swimming and public swim sessions.

In addition to the four-lane, 25 metre pool and changing village, the 3,000m² scheme includes a large gym including functional areas and EGYM, multi-purpose studio and group cycling studio as well as a TAGactive indoor adventure area and soft play for younger children.

The centre is also served by a large café, social workspace and The Signal Box; a community space bringing learning to the area.

The development offers a new outdoor playground for the community, while a 80kW solar PV array has been installed on the roof with a view to allowing the centre to feed excess electricity back into the grid.

The development has been funded by £7.5m from the Towns Fund, with match funding from East Lindsey District Council after the Connected Coast Town Deal Board secured £23.9m of Towns Fund investment for the town.

East Lindsey District Council, part of the South & East Lincolnshire Councils Partnership with Boston Borough Council and South Holland District Council, led the development.

Councillor Richard Fry, political lead for Station Leisure & Learning Centre at East Lindsey District Council, added: “I am delighted

that close working with all partners has seen this high-quality and transformational facility for Mablethorpe completed on schedule and to budget. This facility is a beacon of what can be achieved through collaboration.

“The benefits Station Leisure & Learning Centre will bring to local people will be far reaching and long lasting.

“For the first time, people in Mablethorpe of all ages will be able to access a swimming pool and state-of-the-art fitness facilities without the need to travel, giving more people the opportunity to improve their mental wellbeing and fitness as well as to learn to swim.

“This venue will really make a difference to people from the local area and I thank all our partners who worked on this project for creating a leisure and learning facility we can all be proud of.”

Magna Vitae Trust for Leisure and Culture operates the new centre on behalf of the council.

The One Bromley Wellbeing Hub officially opens

THE One Bromley Wellbeing Hub has reopened after a comprehensive refurbishment, transforming it into a one-stop shop for health and lifestyle support and information for Bromley residents.

Originally opened in October 2022 as a flu and Covid-19 vaccination site, the Hub’s reopening marks a significant step forward in the One Bromley Local Care Partnership’s efforts to reduce health inequalities in the borough.

Dr Angela Bhan, Bromley Place Board director, said: “I am delighted that we are now able to reopen the Wellbeing Hub and offer such a vital range of services to help improve the health of our residents, especially those who are more likely to develop long-term health conditions.

“The Wellbeing Hub is the first of its kind in the borough and has

served us extremely well in the past as a vaccination centre.

“Now we have the opportunity, through collaboration with health and care partners in Bromley, to offer our residents accessible support and advice to help keep them well and healthy.”

Conveniently located in the Glades shopping centre (upper mall, opposite M&S), the Wellbeing Hub is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 10.30am to 6.30pm. It was officially launched by Sir Bob Neill, former MP for Bromley and Bromley Mayor, Councillor David Jefferys.

The One Bromley Wellbeing Hub, provided by the One Bromley Local Care Partnership in collaboration with Mytime Active, offers a range of services targeting the five leading causes of poor health, known as the Vital 5. Also on offer are essential services such as support for carers,

befriending services, smoking cessation, and cost-of-living advice and support.

These services are designed to address both health and socioeconomic challenges, which are often linked. For instance, stopping smoking not only improves physical health but also reduces financial strain. Similarly, cost-of-living advice can alleviate stress and improve mental wellbeing.

Debra Weekes, Mytime Active’s partnerships manager, added: “The Vital 5 – healthy blood pressure, stopping smoking, healthy weight, safe drinking and healthy mind –are the five key areas for long-term good health and wellbeing.

“Support is available at the Wellbeing Hub to identify any issues in these areas and advise on how you can improve them.

“Mytime Active is offering free

lifestyle assessments to support residents with any of the Vital 5, signposting and referring them where appropriate to get the care they need and reduce the risks to their health.

“Our lifestyle advisors are all GP referral exercise specialists, meaning they can provide expert advice on movement and activity for people with long-term health conditions, as well as people who are inactive or those with limited mobility.

“Mytime Active’s team has excellent knowledge of Bromley and what support is available across the borough.”

Services are free and available as walk-in or booked appointments.

This will particularly help those who find it difficult to schedule and keep regular healthcare appointments due to unpredictable work patterns or caring responsibilities.

“£2,935 increase in recurring monthly membership income over and above regular sales!”

Matrix Fitness launch the Total Body Cycle, a reimagined air cycle

MATRIX Fitness, one of the world’s fastest-growing commercial fitness brands, has launched the Total Body Cycle, a new air cycle which makes group exercise and HIIT more intense by transforming cardio workouts into a total body exercise.

The belt-drive air resistance increases the challenge the harder the riders pedal, push and pull. Whilst the design also ensures a significantly quieter experience than its chain-drive competition.

Ergonomically designed handlebars offer multiple grips for riders of all sizes and the frame is reinforced with heavy-duty steel to withstand heavy usage and

tough workouts.

Matrix Fitness UK managing director Matthew Pengelly said:

“We’ve reimagined the classic air bike design to create a cycle perfect for intense training environments and group exercise.

“The Total Body Cycle incorporates a design reimagined for group exercise and HIIT which is low maintenance yet still packs a punch on workouts that activate the whole body, pushing riders to new levels of intensity.”

To keep users motivated, the Total Body Cycle includes a backlit LCD console that captures watts, RPMs, heart rate, calories, time and distance. It even offers

integrated device storage that makes it easy to bring training apps or stream media.

“We know that within a group setting, time is everything, and we’ve made sure the Total Body Cycle allows for fast transitions between users so that instructors can keep up the intensity between circuits,” added Matthew.

“A quick-pull lever lets you instantly adjust seat height, the sculpted seat requires just one wrench to level, the low-maintenance belt-drive streamlines service and minimises downtime so that it’s always ready for the next user.

“We’ve even added a convenient

transport handle, so it’s easy to move the cycle between training areas as needed.”

The seamless shroud design on the Total Body Cycle protects drive components from sweat, dust and moisture to extend equipment life and stabiliser protection plates prevent scratches to keep the cycle looking like new.

Rear levelers make it easy to level the cycle without lifting whilst providing stability to the user no matter how hard they ride.

Enabling studios to transform fitness journeys into exciting, interactive experiences benefits both consumers and fitness brands: exercise is more enjoyable for consumers, and studios can increase class attendance and membership revenue.

“Every successful studio recognises the power of shared experiences,” said Shannon Tracey, vice president of sales and marketing for Xplor Mariana Tek at Xplor Technologies.

“Challenges are an effective way to bring your community together while working towards your

personal goals.

“For the consumer, it’s incredibly motivating and allows them to up their workout frequency and build new routines.

“For studios, it’s a way to build brand sentiment and really solidify the power of community,”

Xplor Mariana Tek’s new industryleading gamification suite supports:

n Unlimited milestones: Studios can set unique milestones, and the new milestone and class counter drives consumers to the next exciting moment in their fitness journey –with opportunities to anticipate milestones, and then share their achievements with friends.

n Goals: By setting personal goals and having these automatically tracked in-app, consumers are more incentivised to book for the week ahead and attend classes more consistently.

n Streaks: Consumers can set a goal for how many classes they will attend each week, and when they accomplish that goal, they will be recognised for consistency. Being celebrated for every streak in realtime helps consumers gain a sense of accomplishment and develop a closer bond with their studio.

n Challenges: Challenges make people feel like they are part of something bigger. Studios can build unique challenges designed to motivate members, build community, and encourage new class bookings, while consumers can automatically track their progress, climb the leaderboard, and share their progress.

Boston-based, multi-location boutique fitness brand B/SPOKE

Studios is using Xplor Mariana Tek’s new gamification growth features to better engage clients and further support communities coming together to sweat together.

Mark Partin, co-founder and CEO of B/SPOKE, said: “We are always looking for clever ways to tap into a healthy competitive spirit amongst our community, get more people engaging with our studio app, and deepen the connection we already have with our loyal clients.

“By celebrating their hard work and injecting some fun into the process through a welldesigned user experience, we’re strengthening our community and encouraging clients to keep coming back in a way that feels empowering and organic. They love it.”

“We’re always seeking new ways to bring consumers closer to our studios and help them motivate their community outside of the studio,” Shannon added.

“Gamification is no different, and our new tools are a virtual high five for members who up their frequency; hit a milestone; complete a challenge; or maintain a weekly class streak.

“With more fun, memorable, and motivational experiences, we’re making it easier for studios to turn drop-in users into more regular members.”

New technical qualifications from Active IQ reinforce commitment to future-proofing fitness sector

ACTIVE IQ has announced the launch of four new technical qualifications with approved funding from the Department of Education:

n Level 3 Technical Occupational Entry in Personal Training.

n Level 3 Technical Specialist in Sports Massage Therapy.

n Level 3 Technical Specialist in Optimising Training for the Ageing Client.

n Level 3 Technical Specialist in Adapting Physical Activity for Antenatal and Postnatal Clients.

“Our industry is constantly evolving and adapting, and it’s our responsibility to ensure that our qualifications are forwardthinking to anticipate the skills and knowledge that will be in demand,” said Jenny Patrickson, managing director at Active IQ.

“We are always talking with employers and professionals in the industry which has allowed us to create qualifications that exceed industry standards, and we believe these new qualifications will equip our

learners with the essential tools they need to succeed in their careers.”

The Department of Education’s approval and funding of these new courses reflect Active IQ’s ongoing commitment to delivering qualifications that meet the dynamic needs of the fitness industry, while maintaining the highest educational standards.

The development of these qualifications is crucial for addressing growing needs within the industry and the changing profile of the population. The

number of people aged 60 or over is expected to pass the 20 million mark by 2030.

In addition, recent statistics show that 64 per cent of pregnant women or women with children under one year have experienced nervousness or anxiety related to physical activity.

These areas require specialised skills to ensure professionals are well-equipped to provide essential and tailored services.

The funding approved by the Department of Education showcases the importance of these qualifications in fostering a skilled and adaptable workforce, recognising the need for industryrelevant training that supports both current demands and future trends within the fitness industry.

Active IQ’s robust Employer Engagement Strategy has been instrumental to the ongoing development and review of their qualifications and a key driver for the introduction of the new technical qualifications. Through a variety of channels, Active IQ

is consistently gathering valuable feedback and insights from industry stakeholders, ensuring that qualifications are not only current but aligned with the evolving nature of the fitness sector.

“Collaborating with Active IQ on these qualification reforms has been a truly insightful process and has given us more of an appreciation and understanding of what’s involved when it comes to developing or reforming qualifications,” added Aaron McCulloch, co-owner and director at Your Personal Training.

“Their commitment to engaging with industry stakeholders is second to none and has been a key factor in ensuring the qualifications meet the real-world needs of the fitness sector.

“We are proud to be involved in shaping these programmes, which will undoubtedly equip future fitness professionals with the essential skills to thrive and adapt in our ever-evolving industry.”

How can gyms master conflict resolution and customer service?

ALONG with keeping an eye on everything else in the business, gym owners often find themselves playing mediator in the event of complaints.

Effective conflict resolution and stellar customer service are crucial for maintaining a positive atmosphere, retaining members and keeping up a good reputation.

In this post, we’re going to explore common complaints that members might have and how gym owners can address them effectively.

Three of the most common gym member complaints and how to prevent them

Let’s start with common member complaints. The best way to prevent complaints is to avoid giving them something to complain about in the first instance.

Billing disputes

Billing or price complaints are one of the most frequent issues. These can range from misunderstandings about membership fees to charges for services they’ve signed up for but haven’t used.

Clear and transparent billing practices can prevent a lot of these disputes, so make sure you have a log of all transactions for each member and that you’re as clear and upfront about your pricing as possible.

Whenever a member makes a purchase, provide detailed confirmation so that your members know exactly what they’re getting for their money.

If you notice that you’re racking up sleeper members, send them an email to remind them to make use of their membership.

Class scheduling issues

Group fitness classes are popular, but confusing booking processes and last-minute scheduling changes can lead to frustration

among members (and eventually high numbers of no-shows for your instructors.)

Using an online booking system for classes is a fantastic way to manage attendance and boost your bookings.

You can use it to stay in contact with your attendees and communicate any schedule changes well in advance at the click of a button.

It also means that members can book on their own terms instead of waiting for a member of staff to respond to their enquiry.

Cleanliness and maintenance

Members expect a clean and well-maintained gym as a bare minimum.

Complaints about cleanliness or broken equipment can quickly tarnish your gym’s reputation in the local area.

One negative review on social media can be what prompts someone to take their business elsewhere.

Rather than waiting for a member to complain about poor hygiene or broken equipment, stay on top of cleaning by implementing a rota and scheduling regular maintenance appointments.

Create a process for members to report issues easily and make sure that these reports are addressed quickly.

Regular updates about maintenance schedules can also help manage expectations, which

prevents members from being disappointed if they turn up to the gym only to find out their favourite piece of equipment is under maintenance.

The secret to conflict resolution

Clear communication and effective processes are key to effective conflict resolution. Use these strategies when dealing with member complaints.

Proactive communication

Keep members informed about any changes that might affect their experience, whether it’s a new class schedule, upcoming maintenance, or changes in billing. Push notifications, emails, and notices in the gym can help keep everyone on the same page.

Active listening

When a member brings up an issue, listen actively.

Acknowledge their concerns and always show empathy. Often, feeling heard is enough to defuse conflict quickly.

Clear and concise information

Whether it’s signage around the gym, emails, or membership and class descriptions, the information should be clear and concise. Avoid jargon and be straightforward in all communications.

Standard operating procedures

Standard operating procedure refers to the steps staff should

take when a problem arises, which allows for consistency in handling conflicts across the board.

Be open to feedback

Create feedback channels for members to share their experiences and ideas. This could be through suggestion boxes, online forms, or regular automated surveys. Use their feedback to improve your services and identify any recurring issues. Conflict resolution and exceptional customer service are vital for gym owners who want to foster a positive environment and retain members.

By understanding common issues, communicating clearly, and establishing seamless processes, gym owners can effectively manage conflict effectively and ensure their gym is a welcoming space for all. Remember, the goal is not only to resolve conflicts, but to build lasting relationships with members through trust and transparency.

SUPER VERTICAL MULTI PRESS

The Super Vertical Multi Press Panatta represents an evolution of the already popular and innovative Super Horizontal Multi Press, changing its position of use from lying down to sitting, for greater convenience of use and greater comfort while performing the movement. It makes it possible to reproduce the typical thrusting movement of the upper limbs with straight or angled grip and both wide and narrow amplitude.

Compared to execution with free weights, the exercises performed at the Super Vertical Multi Press have the following advantages:

n semicircular guided trajectory is more natural for the joints and more effective for the muscles; n the resistance curve, modulated by the progressive lever system, is always increasing, at the beginning of the movement the resistance is lower so as not to overload the shoulder and elbow joints, then increasing until the maximum contraction.

Again in order to safeguard the joints and to make the execution as physiological as possible, the machine is equipped with a lever for facilitated initiation of movement, which allows the muscles involved to perform optimal stretching in eccentric contraction, promoting the myotatic reflex and activation of the neuromuscular spindles that make the subsequent concentric phase of the first repetition more powerful and effective.

The Super Vertical Multi Press is equipped with dual handles with a rotary selection system that allows a choice between:

STRAIGHT BAR HANDLE

This handle allows maximum freedom as to grip width, from wider than shoulder width, typical of the bench press for the chest, to hands at the same width as the shoulders for greater triceps and anterior deltoid involvement.

ANGLED BAR HANDLE

This handle is equipped with a rotary system for selecting the grip width, which can be: n narrow with smaller shoulder width, with the angle of the grips avoiding stress on the wrists and the movement occurring purely in the sagittal plane;

n medium with the hands at the same width as the shoulders, the angle of the holds in this case causes the movement of the humerus to shift to an intermediate plane between sagittal and transverse.

Consultancy completes work on health club offering for hotel

BLACK Book Leisure Consultancy has completed work on the refurbishment of Elevate Health Club at the VOCO Hotel in Reading.

The two-phase project saw the health club and spa space close on New Years’ Eve 2023 for a monthlong initial renovation, which included a fully fitted gym with nine cardiovascular stations, five fixed resistance machines and two free weight stations from Freemotion, plus a large functional space.

New for the health club was an upgrade from four TVs on the front wall to fully integrated 22-inch touch screen displays on the CV equipment.

A state-of-the-art AV system that drives all content requirements for the kit, including a high speed internet feed, also enables Freemotion to remote service the equipment with software updates.

The health club’s swimming pool and pool side area were completely stripped of their small, white tiles and new, large-format floor and wall tiles were fitted 2.7 metres up the wall.

Brian Thompson, founding director of Black Book Leisure Consultancy, said: “It was a design feature led by

an operational pain.

“Previously the tiles only came 1.2 metres up the walls, which were then painted all the way up to the ceiling, so wet hands easily marked and damaged the paintwork.

“The higher tiling creates an easier to maintain space and, more importantly, a modern sleek finish that the hotel deserves.”

New lighting was installed on poolside to create light above the pool, as well as in the swimming pool itself, and a decommissioned Jacuzzi space was transformed into a relaxation area.

Brian added: “We redesigned the quantity and quality of lights to give the whole area a really sleek look, throwing more light into the pool than before.

“This was key, having changed the white pool tiles to a darker grey finish.

“We created a new relaxation area, complemented by a tiled shelving area for clients to place drinks on, with mood lighting above to help members de-stress on loungers after a swim or treatment.

“We also refurbished and finished the poolside showers with mosaic tiling, providing a quality finish in line with the steam room and feature shower.”

The male and female changing rooms were also totally gutted and refitted, including new lockers and re-designed vanity areas, allowing for a better flow through the space, with new ceilings and lighting to make them feel bright and spacious.

A new, larger sauna with more seating was also designed and built, and the area further expanded to include a steam room and new feature shower, lifting the quality and finishes at the same time to enhance the experience for members and guests.

Phase two began in March when Black Book Leisure Consultancy

created a spa offering for the hotel, redesigning and building out the health club’s original reception area to create a third treatment room, expanding the client offering by including a double treatment room containing two beds for couples and friends to enjoy the spa together.

Previously members entered the health club through a small, single side door.

Black Book Leisure Consultancy created a whole new member journey by designing an entirely new entrance. Users now enter through the revolving doors of the main hotel entrance where they are welcomed by the hotel receptionist, before walking past the restaurant and bar down to the new, dedicated health club reception area.

Here they are greeted by health club staff who provide them with a towel and direct them into the club.

Brian said: “Entering the health club is now a far better customer experience as there is no longer a ‘them and us’ feeling. Plus it gives the hotel the chance to upsell food and beverages to the health club members on their way past.”

Across the entire club, new ceilings and flooring were installed and the

club was also fully redecorated with a new colour scheme on brand with VOCO, an IHG Hotel.

Brian concluded: “We have worked with 3d Leisure, which manages the Elevate health club on behalf of VOCO, numerous times over the years on a range of projects, and so were excited to take on the challenge of designing and transforming VOCO Reading’s outdated health club into an exciting, modern, fit-for-purpose leisure destination.

“We viewed the scheme, listened carefully to the ideas the hotel owner’s senior team and 3d Leisure had for the space and within four weeks we managed to drive the costs down and ultimately deliver a £750,000 project for £500,000, to meet the client’s budget.

“Within four weeks the plans were approved and we were ready to start work, and we delivered the concept on time and well within budget.

“Our final design has married the look and feel of the health club to the hotel finishes elsewhere. Not only does it give members and guests a much better offering, it makes Elevate Health Club feel part of the four-star hotel it already is.”

Operator set for gains with latest funding

GYM franchise Snap Fitness has boosted its expansion plans after increasing the amount of funding available to new franchisees, with support from HSBC UK.

Snap Fitness’ banking partner HSBC UK will now lend up to 60 per cent of start-up costs to franchisees. With the brand set to reach the 100-gym landmark in the UK and Ireland later this year, this uplift in funding will provide entrepreneurs with greater support as they look to establish their franchisee business.

Kevin Yates, CEO of Lift Brands EMEA, said: “This is testament to the ongoing work of our teams across the Europe, the Middle East and Africa region who are operating

highly profitable gyms.

“We’re really excited by the opportunities for growth within our business and this funding will allow us to support more ambitious entrepreneurs as they realise their ambitions of owning their own gym.”

Existing Snap Fitness franchisees are traditionally seeing a return on investment within three years, allowing them to quickly scale their investment and become multi-site owners.

Newly opened locations of Snap Fitness are also breaking even within the first eight weeks of operation.

Anita Roberts, franchising director

at HSBC UK, added: “The franchise industry continues to be incredibly resilient and this is reflected in Snap Fitness’ sustained growth.

“We look forward to working with more franchisees and helping to provide the funding required to successfully open more Snap Fitness locations across the UK.”

Snap Fitness has more than 1,000 gyms across the world in more than 20 countries.

As well as no closures or sites currently up for sale in the Europe, the Middle East and Africa estate, its UK membership base grew by more than 17 per cent year on year across the same number of sites against an industry backdrop of four per cent.
