Research reveals where members go for support By Christina Eccles THE way people exercise is changing, according to research, which has revealed why people use fitness technology and where they look for support with their workouts. Worldwide research commissioned by Jabra revealed fitness hopefuls are aware that training guidance is important, but many aren’t seeking advice – either from professionals or peers. Almost three quarters (71 per cent) admitted to having never used a personal or group trainer and another 96 per cent aren’t prepared to do a basic search online for quick tips and video workouts. UK specific data found: n For 45 per cent, getting fit or feeling better physically is one of their biggest priorities for this year. n 14 per cent work out two to three times a week and 13 per cent once a week. n 70 per cent of fitness hopefuls never used a personal or group trainer before to improve their fitness. n 54 per cent use fitness technology to stay motivated and keep track of their fitness progress. n Ease of use (21 per cent) is the most important criteria when purchasing fitness technology,

followed by one do-it-all product (14 per cent) and fitness analysis capabilities (12 per cent). Additional research also found that many fitness fans are favouring ‘solo’ workouts such as running, cycling and swimming – but like to stay connected and motivated through the use of hearables like wireless headphones, digital music services and apps. SVP at Jabra, Calum MacDougall, said: “What people are seeking from wearable devices is adapting – they want help and advice on their fitness journey more than they are looking for a simple step counter. “People are looking for simplicity – the research has made that clear, and that trend is set to continue into 2017. “A one-device-fits-all approach is what people are seeking – whether that’s a mobile phone with multiple applications, or headphones that have fitness functions as well. “Hopefully, in 2017, with the right technology, those looking to workout can have both the gear, and a better idea of the right workout for them.” n How is your gym or fitness studio embracing technology? Women’s gym to re-open under new management By Christina Eccles

A LADIES only gym in Sunderland is re-launching under new management, following £12,000 of investment. Club Zest Ladies Leisure in Fulwell is now under the ownership of Holly Donaldson and Jennie Moyse, who both previously worked at the club as instructors. The pair took over the reins in December and closed for extensive refurbishment, including new studio facilities and state-of-the-art equipment. Holly said: “I started working here 15 years ago as a Saturday girl, just for some extra pocket money while studying business at college. Never

in a million years did I think I’d own the place. From my first day I decided I wanted to go into the health and fitness industry. I qualified as a fitness instructor two years later and have never looked back.” Holly went on to gain more experience and qualifications, then worked her way through the ranks to the position of full-time manager, before going part-time to look after her young family. She added: “I came back full-time when we took over in December. We’ve refurbished the gym pretty much ourselves. We worked round the clock to make sure it was ready in January and thankfully our work paid off. We’ve had some brilliant feedback and we’ve welcomed a

Our goal is to help women smash theirs. Whether that is to get fit, lose weight, tone up – you name it, we can do it.” Jennie is an experienced fitness instructor, personal trainer and sports massage therapist. She joined the team in 2014, when she was originally recruited by her now business partner, Holly. She added: “It’s such an exciting time for Club Zest. We knew the gym was a little tired and needed a shakeup. “We’ve fully refurbished it and invested in new studios and equipment, as well as putting together a new timetable of classes for our members. New gym makes personal training affordable for all By Christina Eccles A NEW gym in Liverpool is proving that personal training can be accessible and affordable for everyone. Origym has found a niche for people looking for more than traditional gym membership but who either like to train with other people – such as family, friends or work colleagues – or who don’t want to pay for one to one personal training. To bridge that gap, the club has created ‘express PT’ classes; small group training sessions which can hold up to four people at a time. And at a cost of £15 per person, per session if they do four classes a month or £12.50 for eight a month, the option is proving popular. Gym director Mike Wardle explained: “We wanted to try and dispel the myth that personal training is only for people with disposal income by offering express PT that is still periodised, progressive and planned, but at a fraction of the cost of one to one personal training.” The gym opened late last year and follows on from the success of the first Origym in Formby, set up by Luke Hughes and Steph Roberts. After working with Steph in the past, Mike was brought on board to help create the second site – and he told Workout, he’s really enjoying the role.

Gyms urged to support campaign

GYMS – and their members – have been invited to promote health and fitness and give back to local communities by taking part in Technogym’s global Let’s Move for a Better World campaign. From March 13 – 31, members in clubs all over the world will join forces to donate their MOVEs – Technogym’s unit for measuring movement – which are logged through the mywellness cloud. The clubs with the most MOVEs scored then get the chance to donate kit to organisations within their local community. Last year, the most successful UK club was Crow Wood Leisure in Burnley, which generated 3,126,802 MOVEs. Director Andrew Brown said: “The commitment of our members for Let’s Move for a Better World has been fantastic. “Their effort has seen us contribute almost £20,000 worth of exercise equipment to Burnley schools to date. We look forward to competing in the campaign again, so that another school can benefit from state-of-the-art Technogym equipment.” The UK took fifth place globally with over 27 million MOVEs. 60 facilities took part.

Personal trainer opens own studio By Christina Eccles

A NORTH East personal trainer has branched out to open his own studio after achieving success in the local area with his bootcamp business. Aaron Phillips has launched OceanFit in Whitley Bay, delivering sessions in the heart of the town centre. The studio opened last Autumn and, after working hard to spread the word to among his existing bootcamp clients and to a wider audience, Aaron has enjoyed a busy start to

2017. He said: “It’s going really well. We opened in October and had a steady start but January has been crazy.” Aaron told Workout his intention for the studio was to become the ‘go to’ fitness place in the local community, giving people the option to enjoy a more bespoke and personalised service to help them meet their goals and focusing mainly on functional and body weight style training. He added: “There’s a lot of knowledge within the studio and

education is very important to us. “People are paying for that one to one private service and so we build up that trust with them.” Aaron also runs bootcamps in Whitley Bay – both indoor and outside on the beach – with locals enjoying training outdoors – even in the cold and dark winter months. He added: “I do indoor and outdoor camps but the outdoor ones before work are 10 times more popular. “These clients are really dedicated. You know they have dedication when

they’ve made it all the way through the winter. “These are the type of people I want as my clients.” For the coming months, Aaron is now looking to build on his successful start by promoting the studio even further and getting more people through the doors. He added: “I want to fully establish the business and put it on the map properly. “So far, it’s going really well. I couldn’t be happier.”

Active IQ appoints new CMO ACTIVE IQ has appointed Dr Dane Vishnubala as its chief medical advisor. He will deliver bi-monthly webinars focusing on technical content to complement the launch of Active IQ’s refreshed Level Three Diploma in Personal Training. Dane will also write bi-monthly blogs to dovetail his webinars and provide a monthly ‘Ask The Expert’ service.

AN Edinburgh based nutritionist and fitness expert has used her own experience of chronic illness to inspire her new business, which aims to bring good nutrition and exercise to people’s busy lives. Lorraine Cunningham launched Nutritious Lolly to offer easy-to-follow nutrition advice, but it only came about after years of struggling with her own health and being diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome in her late twenties. She said: “I had a really stressful role in my previous career and slowly but surely it started to get to the point that it was making me incredibly unwell. “The traditional ways used to treat IBS didn’t really work for me and, from my own research, I discovered quite quickly just how incredibly important good nutrition is, in not only improving conditions like IBS, but in maintaining your general health. “I always tell people that your digestive system is sort of like the powerhouse of your body and if you don’t look after it, your health is going to suffer in all sorts of ways. That’s why good, easy-to-follow nutrition is the foundation for the Nutritious Lolly Six-Week Whole-Body Plan.” Known to her friends as Lolly, Lorraine has been working on the new brand with web developers,

Lorraine Cunningham marketing and social media experts and business advisers to prepare for the launch. The six-week online course incorporates weekly fitness videos and easy-to-follow recipes. She added: “In some ways, the actual nutrition and fitness part of the business is really the easy part. The thing that’s really taken the time is all the business-related matters. I’ve spent a long time ensuring that I have the proposition right, and that the branding and marketing is where it should be. “I’ve been working with some very talented people and it’s both exciting and nerve-racking to finally be at the stage where we’re ready to launch.”

Building on the success of its Airborne Fitness Programme, fitness fans can now enjoy Circuit, HIIT, Boot Camp and Bounce Combat at Oxygen Freejumping parks in Acton, Derby, Leeds, Manchester, Southampton and Wigan.

A DETERMINED personal trainer is on a mission to get both adults and kids fitter after returning from the Middle East to work in the UK. Karen Porter has spent the last 11 years in Qatar where she launched her business, Body and Health by Design. She has recently moved back home with her family and re-launched her business as a fitness trainer and life coach; starting up new small group training classes in Kent. Since moving back, she told Workout she has noticed some changes – both within the industry and society as a whole. She said: “The culture is very different. Over there, I was running classes on the beach and in five-star hotels. Within the ex-pat community, people had time and a lot of money. “It’s surprised me back here that the time factor is very different. I’ve really had to try and look at that and the financial restrictions. But on the flip side, it’s really nice to be able to go out into parks.” Karen also explained why she’s concerned by the growing problem of childhood obesity and is planning on doing her bit to address the issue by

Starting with the schools her children attend, she’s looking to go in and speak to kids; teaching them about exercise and nutrition and spreading the message that being active and healthy doesn’t have to be time consuming or expensive. She added: “I’m absolutely blown away by the statistics on childhood obesity levels. There’s a lack of activity and poor nutrition and that’s directly affecting mental health. “I’m going to go and work with schools in the area to create a platform where that can be improved through exercise and knowledge of

nutrition.” Karen’s other plans this year include creating an online class, which will enable her to teach people anywhere – including some of her clients back in Qatar. She added: “I have some very loyal clients in Qatar after 11 years there so will be doing a Pilates class where a small number of people will come online and I’ll teach it, as well as live short interval workouts on Facebook.” n Are you setting up a new class this year or tapping into the trend for online training? PEOPLE who lead more physically active lifestyles tend to report better overall wellbeing, research has claimed. A study from Central YMCA has found a correlation between being physically active and being happy, with 44 per cent of people asked saying their wellbeing is at its highest when playing sport or exercising. The study surveyed a nationally representative sample of 1,000 adults from across the UK and participants were asked to rate 14 statements to determine how various lifestyle factors, such as levels of physical activity, experiences of education, mental stimulation and relationships impacted overall wellbeing. The research found being physically active causes a 13 per cent boost to wellbeing scores, while being less active depletes these scores by up to 19 per cent – unveiling a 32 per cent divide between the most and least physically active in society. It also showed that those who lead physically active lifestyles attain the highest wellbeing scores – achieving 6.92 on an index of 10, against a national average wellbeing score of 6.13.

Chief executive at Central YMCA, Rosi Prescott, said: “These results confirm something we at Central YMCA have been aware of for a long time – physical activity greatly impacts our overall wellbeing. “Our organisation works with people every day to help them lead more active lifestyles so we see first-hand how increases in physical activity can impact your mood, wellbeing and ultimately happiness. “So, we’re not surprised that the research has shown those who are more active typically enjoy wellbeing scores that are up to a third better than those who are less active.” The report also uncovered that those who had found themselves becoming more active over the last three years demonstrated an eight per cent uplift in wellbeing scores, while those whose fitness levels had decreased saw their scores fall by over a fifth. Previous research from the Mental Health Foundation found participation in regular physical activity increases self-esteem, can help reduce stress and anxiety, and can work as a preventative measure when it comes to the development of mental health problems.

Entrepreneur thinks outside of the box to avoid injuries By Christina Eccles A FITNESS entrepreneur who has launched his own business manufacturing and selling gym equipment has developed the world’s first soft edged wooden plyo box. Will Ruscombe-King, who has just graduated with an MSc in Strength and Conditioning at Cardiff School of Sport, was inspired to design and create his own plyo box and to launch a company, boxjumps.eu, after he fell off a wooden model and scraped his shin along its side during a training session. He explained: “The kind of injury I experienced is very common amongst fitness enthusiasts and I found it hard to believe somebody hadn’t done something before now to address the problem. “My MSc in strength and conditioning at Cardiff Met has also hugely influenced this project, in particular, keeping the athlete safe as a priority.” To develop the product, Will was able to make use of the Fab Lab Cardiff workshop, based at the Cardiff School of Art and Design, to make the prototype. Editor’s Comment FROM heart rate monitors to fitness apps, technology is changing the face of fitness. And here at Workout, we’re excited to see how operators are keeping up with the times. This month, we speak to several clubs and individuals who are tapping into the technology trend; from MYZONE monitoring at the Speedflex studio in Leeds where I took on my class challenge to personal trainer Karen Porter who is planning online classes to cater to demand from her clients around the world. It’s great to see so much initiative from the industry and how technology is helping fitness businesses of all shapes and sizes move forwards. Another trend in technology – social media – is also playing a part in how gyms communicate with customers. Over at Gym Unity in Staffordshire, owner Jamie has seen his second club get off to a flying start, in part thanks to the power of Facebook which he has been successfully using as a marketing tool. Turn to page 20 to find out how

things are going there – and how winning a National Fitness Award has helped him push his business to the next level. For many this means a refurbishment or facelift to add in some new kit, respond to a trend or create additional space in preparation for an influx of new members. For our refurbishment feature – starting on page 32 – we’ve rounded up some of the latest success stories in this area, showcasing how operators from the boutique sector to the leisure trusts are starting 2017 with a bang. Promising to deliver high intensity group training in a completely inclusive environment, the Speedflex concept is sweeping the nation. Workout editor Christina Eccles tried out a class.

Former footballer Alan Shearer and TV presenter Ben Shephard are both big fans of and ambassadors for Speedflex.

Speedflex sessions offer something for everyone WHAT do footballer Alan Shearer and TV presenter Ben Shephard have in common? The answer; a shared love for Speedflex – a brand which both the fitness fans are ambassadors for. But although loved by the professionals, the beauty of a Speedflex session is that it is inclusive; appealing to everyone from an athlete looking to stay in peak condition to a complete beginner. Sales director Jeff Davis explained: “The key thing about Speedflex is how inclusive it is. Everyone is talking about HIIT training but not all training is equal. “The thing with Speedflex is that it doesn’t matter what condition you

are in. Anyone can do it – and of any level of fitness.” The group concept offers a personal experience in a group environment, with up to 16 people in a class. The sessions feature a combination of eight Speedflex units and eight auxiliary stations – featuring kit such as Kettlebells – and the circuit style classes are each led by an instructor. Throughout the class, participants also receive live feedback through MYZONE heart rate monitoring – allowing them to track their progress and assess how hard they are working. Around the country, the concept is gathering pace, with six dedicated studios open and scaleable options

for clubs to also come on board by creating a Speedflex area on their gym floor or for use with a personal trainer. One success story is the Speedflex Leeds studio, where business is booming. This site now benefits from a second functional studio, designed for personalised inductions, independent workouts and personal training sessions, and is also proving fitness classes can be flexible by offering rolling sessions on the timetable where participants can drop in and out dependent on their schedule. Instructor at Speedflex Leeds, Monica Torland, added: “With the exciting addition of the functional

studio in Leeds, the future of Speedflex is continuously evolving and growing. “This new studio offers premium equipment as well as the opportunity to have personal training, which we believe complements the unique high intensity group sessions that Speedflex already provides. “Speedflex works and will continue to be popular as it is the only form of training on the market that offers a high intensity, low impact workout in a time efficient manner and will decrease the chance of muscle soreness the next day. “It is suitable for all abilities and, last but not least, is fun and motivating for all ages over 16.”

The perfect alternative workout for fitness fans FOR fitness fans looking for a new way to workout, Speedflex could just be the perfect option. Offering participants the chance to get fitter and stronger in a maximum time of 45 minutes, in today’s increasingly time pressured environment, it’s an effective way to fit exercise into your day. My workout took place at Speedflex’s Leeds studio, which definitely fitted into the high end, boutique style model which is currently proving popular. And the whole experience left me feeling really impressed. For starters, the induction process should be particularly commended.

Before I began the class, my height was measured, I had my body composition analysed and was taken through a oneto-one induction with a trainer who talked me through the moves and how to use each piece of kit. The whole process was really thorough; giving me the opportunity to ask any questions and ensuring I felt confident and well equipped to start the session. The class itself was made up of six people ranging from experienced to myself; a complete beginner. The participants were also a variety of ages and both male and female – proving this really is a class suitable for everyone. I really liked using the

Speedflex machines during the session, as including them meant I was able to go at my own pace and push myself as hard as I wanted to. But even when I was working at optimum level – in the MYZONE ‘red’ zone – I didn’t feel that my technique ever suffered or that I was struggling to keep up. After the class, sales director Jeff explained to me more about how the machines work and how the concentric focus of the sessions mean users are required to engage opposing muscle groups to complete a variety of complex, compound exercises. This ensures muscles are never stretched beyond their capacity and reduces

or eliminates post exercise pain, otherwise known as the dreaded DOMS; a great bonus for regular exercisers. Our instructor Monica was also really good at making sure I could cope with all the moves, and with it being a relatively small class, we all benefited from personal attention, as well as a bit of friendly competition among the more experienced members of the group. The next day, I was pleasantly surprised not to be suffering a lot post class, and after just one session I can easily see why enthusiasts become hooked on the Speedflex experience. A fun, full body workout in just 45 minutes, with minimal soreness the next day? Sign me up!

UK FITNESS SCENE Winning a National Fitness Award has rounded off a successful five years in business for an independent gym, which is now entering a new era with a change of name and the opening of a sister site. Christina Eccles found out more.

The new Gym Unity facility in Burton (left) and the team from the Ezee Gym in Lichfield who won the Regional Gym of the Year Midlands and Wales award at the NFAs last year.

Gym enters new era with name change and sister site opening “WE knew the name was coming to the end, so winning the award was really important,” owner of Gym Unity Jamie Waterston told Workout. Previously known as Ezee Gym, Jamie sold the name to the Easyjet brand around the same time as his Lichfield based club was crowned Regional Gym of the Year Midlands and Wales at last year’s awards. The win marked both the end of an era and the beginning of an exciting new chapter, which includes the re-brand and the addition of a second site in nearby Burton. Jamie explained: “It’s scary because everyone knows me as Jamie from Ezee Gym, but it also means we get the chance to have a new logo and freshen everything up. “The new site is about 15 miles away. We wanted it to be far away enough not to dilute our existing membership but close enough to manage.” The idea for the second club, which specialises in strength training,

was born when Jamie found he was getting increasing numbers of people coming from Burton to train as there wasn’t a facility in the town that adequately catered to their needs. The new club is run by a pair of bodybuilding champions, who are on hand to provide members with the expertise needed to achieve their goals. Members can also benefit from dual site membership, with both clubs cleverly situated just off the area’s main A road; meaning if members are stuck in traffic at either end, they can easily exit and go to the gym. Jamie added: “We opened on January 2 with a free open day. We did it on the Bank Holiday because all the other gyms were closed and people were eager to train. “Sign ups are going well. Members get to use the Lichfield site as well so if they are into classes, they can go there. The two have integrated well.” Following his NFA success last year, Jamie is hoping to retain the title at

this year’s awards, as well as put his new club forward for a trophy. And he told Workout why he would urge other operators to enter. He added: “It’s recognition for you, your team, members and everyone else involved as a lot of people don’t realise the hours you put in and the sleepless nights. “It’s also a great platform. I’ve got people who have come to me saying ‘you won an award’ and we have put it on everything from our flyers to the website. “We’ve really gone to town on it. It’s a great platform to build off and a way to improve.” Jamie has been spreading the word about the new club via Facebook and one of its biggest talking points has been an eye-catching mural wall, which is providing the perfect backdrop for gym selfies and arty Instagram posts. He added: “In terms of marketing, this has got the most exposure. It cost us about the same as a full page

advert in the local paper, but it’s permanent. It’s been a really good tool. “I didn’t just want to replicate the same gym in Burton. We wanted to give that area what it needed. Now there’s nothing you can’t do between the two sites. We’ve basically got everything covered.” Over the next few months, investment will continue at both clubs, with Jamie hoping to strike a balance between promoting the new gym and making sure his loyal, original members still feel looked after. He added: “I need to keep pushing Burton but don’t want them to think all my attention is on the new gym. “I want members to know we are still improving and investing and we haven’t forgotten them. “It’s so competitive. There’s always someone waiting for your members. You get one chance to sell your facility, so we want everything to be the best it can be.”

Brand launches new concept

Online workout fills gap for boxing fans By Christina Eccles

A NEW online workout has launched, which fills a gap in the market for busy boxing fans looking to exercise outside of the gym. The BoxxMethod pairs intense shadow boxing with high intensity interval training, with no bags, no pads and no ring. With just a pair of optional hand weights needed, users are coached through a series of three-minute rounds by an expert instructor and can choose from 15 or 30-minute workouts, as well as those targeting lower, upper or full body. A monthly or annual subscription gives customers access to a library filled with videos, downloadable guides and planners, with a monthly content refresh ensuring they never get bored. Co-founder Anna Samuels said: “After having my little girl, time

became something of a luxury. I rarely managed to grab a coffee let alone find the time to workout. “Boxing had always been my favourite way to train, as the mental and physical benefits are just incredible! “However, getting to my weekly studio classes became a thing of the past, so I decided to explore online alternatives. “I quickly realised that the demand for boxing workouts had only been satisfied offline but not yet online. I therefore decided to fill this gap and from here the BoxxMethod was born. “Our method is all about short, high energy shadow boxing workouts that challenge users strength, both mentally and physically. “The beauty of the BoxxMethod is it is accessible 24/7 on your computer, laptop or mobile device allowing busy people like me to workout wherever, whenever.”

Boutique studio concept is on the hunt for franchisees By Christina Eccles

A BOUTIQUE studio concept is expanding across the UK – and is looking for franchisees to come on board. YourZone45 studios offer 45-minute interval training workouts designed to make members fitter, stronger and faster. Developed by personal trainer Chris Elms, YourZone45 currently has four studios in Braintree, Chelmsford, Colchester and Colliers Wood. The studios are 2,000-3,000sqft in size – with a target of 300 members per studio – and sessions combine the energy and community of a group exercise class with the individual attention and guidance of a personal training session. With the trend for boutique training showing no sign of slowing down, Chris is now looking for franchisees and has created a package to help them open and create their own YourZone45 studio. He said: “The reason for looking at franchises is that our clubs are built around the workout and a community culture. “We felt having that with having the owner/manager there, the clubs will grow and have that consistency. “I started my first group training studio in 2003, so it’s what I’ve known

A typical YourZone45 studio. for the last 14 years. It’s only really in about the last four years, I started to look at the franchise model as a way of expanding. “I felt I was in a good position – having experience of running group training studios – so it’s been about developing the brand and model. Now we have a great workout and a really good looking brand.” The workouts also tap in to the latest trend for wearable technology, with each session delivered by a YourZone45 fitness coach and guided by a heart rate system, with members’ heart rate percentages displayed on screens.

The goal is for members to achieve 84-100 per cent of their maximum heart rate for at least 12 to 20 minutes so they continue to burn calories for up to 36 hours after their workout. MYZONE is also included in the cost of membership, and about 95 per cent of members are using the technology. Chris added: “As an operator, you need to continually improve your model to keep members engaged and encourage them to return. “The value for money offered by MYZONE is exceptional – the benefits you get from using the technology far outweigh the costs.”

Personal trainer Steve Bradley is celebrating after his 10-week online fitness programme helped over 1,000 women lose over 5,000kg between them in the space of a year. Individuals from as far afield as Australia and Dubai have participated in Steve’s programme – Lean and Learn. He said: “Rather than working on a face-to-face basis, I decided creating a business with social media as a key business tool would allow me to help multiple individuals, bringing many like-minded people together to support one another via Facebook and online forums. By educating individuals and giving them a programme which doesn’t boast unrealistic targets, Lean and Learn encourages people to change their lifestyles allowing them to achieve long term results.”

Spirit Fitness joins forces with Primal

SPIRIT Fitness has become Primal Strength’s official cardio partner. Already providing the market with high quality strength and functional training products, the partnership enables Primal Strength to offer cardio equipment from a wellestablished and trusted brand. In exchange, Spirit Fitness now offers a variety of new solutions that satisfy the current demand for functional training-based workouts, including racks, free weights and accessories such as battle ropes and slam balls. Managing director of Spirit Fitness UK, Jamie Burton, said: “Spirit Fitness is a long established global brand that supplies the commercial sector with high quality cardio and strength products along with unrivalled customer service. But, as fitness trends have shown, gym users want greater flexibility in their workouts. They want to combine machine-based programmes with functional training and HIIT. “By working with Primal Strength, we can now address this trend by partnering with a supplier that we believe offers the same level of quality and customer service that we do. In return, being Primal Strength’s official cardio partner, we can provide the trusted cardio machines that they need to complete their offering.”

How technology can expose incompetent HIIT instructors By Dave Wright HIGH intensity interval training continues to be a trend in the fitness industry. It involves short bursts of activity at a high effort level followed by periods of lower intensity rest breaks in between each bout of exercise. This contrasts with a consistent (steady state) effort level as experienced on a long steady jog. However, despite the rise in popularity of this mode of training, many operators and trainers simply get HIIT wrong and that’s where technology would expose their incompetence. To clarify, intensity is the amount of effort being exerted expressed as a percentage of one’s maximum heart rate level, which provides an absolute number relevant to the individual. The H in HIIT refers to High intensity or an effort level that is well above 80 per cent. The second (I) interval in HIIT represents the rest and recovery where one’s heart rate drops below 70 per cent of their maximum heart rate, and it’s this that is often overlooked and denies customers a means of recovery. Instead, most sessions only deliver High Intensity Training. To understand why this is a concern, first we must remind

Dave Wright ourselves about heart rate and the definition of fitness. You see your fitness is not determined by your maximum heart rate, but instead by your resting heart rate and how quickly you recover after exercise. Secondly, we must realise that the industry is famous for keeping fit people fitter with a ‘one size fit all’ approach and that’s why one type of exercise that may work for one person most probably would be inapplicable to another. To put this into perspective, if you are conducting a HIIT session and you are allowing two minutes of work, then 30 seconds of recovery, this

may be sufficient for a fit person, but provide no rest for someone who is less fit. They would be forced to work again when they haven’t recovered and that’s when injuries may kick in. This is why smart operators use telemetry display technology to display the real-time intensity of their clients to a TV screen or projector so that they can actually see when their customers reach the Highs but also monitor the safe recovery intervals as well. Subsequently, feedback communicates that the progress made during a client’s training is congruent with that suggested and this ultimately raises the professionalism of the industry and the motivation to its stakeholders. And we all know that motivation leads to results. n Dave Wright is the CEO of CFM (Creative Fitness Marketing), CEO and creator of MYZONE, owner of the Feelgood Fitness and Voyage Fitness Club Chains, a former Board Director of UK Active and founder of the IOU. With offices in Chicago (US), Nottingham (UK) and Melbourne (Oz), Dave’s companies have worked directly with over 5,000 health clubs across 30 different countries, encouraging people to be more and stay more physically active. The unspoken truth about social media marketing By Duncan Green IN a poll reported in USA Today, 61 per cent of small business customers could not document or prove any direct return on their investments in social media activity. Yet 51 per cent said they were increasing time and money commitments. And only seven per cent said they were cutting back! Consumers are most likely to share articles, news, and content related to science but only nine per cent of person to person recipients click on the shared links regarding the topics Timely news and political items are less widely shared at two per cent, but the click rates are 86 per cent and 74 per cent respectively. Business related: only a four per cent share and a 24 per cent click on shared links. Health: three per cent share, 15 per cent click. Celebrity and entertainment two per cent share but a 40 per cent click. Consumer reviews of products and businesses one per cent share, four per cent click. Personal Finance one per cent share 11 per cent click. It’s thought that the disparity between share and click rates as

“ego sharing”. Senders share content they believe boosts their perceived intelligence, informed status, etc regardless of whether they think the recipients will find it interesting or not! The overall average is three per cent sharing of content, 24 per cent of recipients clicking on shared links. (Statistics from 33Acrosscom based on 500 publishers of online content) What can we take from these findings?

Two things here. Firstly the only secure strategy is a multimedia marketing strategy utilising a variety of different media both online and offline and the second is the requirement to have a well thought out multi-channel sales strategy. The marketing success triangle has not changed. Your MOST COMPELLING message, delivered to the RIGHT audience using the RIGHT media.

Measurement of effectiveness of your campaigns is the key to success. As William Edward Demming once said “In God we trust, all others bring data.” As we’ve mentioned many times on the pages of Workout it’s absolutely vital to measure the success of your pipeline and the ROI of every campaign. Test the media used against the results. Social media, like direct mail, like press advertising, has a role in a successful club marketing plan. However to over egg its importance and to short cut traditional activities in favour of this media could well be folly! A final thought on social media and in fact all the marketing tactics club operators can use... Test small, don’t commit what you can’t afford to lose and live by the old adage, “If it’s not going to get me the results, I am not going to do it! n Duncan Green is managing director of Momentum Business Development. UK FITNESS SCENE Established clubs needn’t feel under pressure from emerging boutique rivals: they can compete by bringing the best elements of the boutique experience to their members. Matthew Januszek of Escape Fitness looks at how it can be done.

How can clubs capitalise on the boutique trend? WHILE travelling around the world in the past year or so in particular, I’ve been struck by the sheer number of boutique clubs opening in every market. Operators of established clubs are naturally looking hard at how they can respond – including through creating a ‘club within a club’ to offer a boutique experience. Back in the December issue of WorkOut, myself and colleagues from Escape, as well as some our customers, shared our view of the market drivers for boutique fitness. Those drivers – from social media to ever more discerning customers – will surely only get stronger in the coming years. Someone else keeping a close eye on things is Nicola Joyce, a freelance sport and fitness journalist with extensive experience and knowledge of the fitness industry. Nicola works with the Escape team, looking at industry trends and contributing to our blog. Nicola recently put together her list of 10 ‘must-have ingredients’ for creating a boutique experience in an established club. It’s a great breakdown of some of the things that any operator can focus on in order to give members something that rivals even the best boutique destination. 1. Hire superb trainers Successful niche boutique brands typically invest in passionate, highly specialised trainers. Clubs who want to compete should take the same approach. 2. Attract superb staff too The boutiques also tend to hire, train and retain the very best front of house staff. It’s all part of the experience and clubs need to take this on board. 3. Leverage your location

experience will be red tape. Boutiques demonstrate fast reaction times and nimble thinking, so don’t let layers of decision making and sign-off hold back your venture. 7. Think like a leader Start thinking like the leader of a fitness community. Building a unique experience around a strong ideology that will speak to potential members. 8. Adopt a niche Boutique’s strength often lies in offering one thing, and doing it very well. Identify a speciality that users want and that you can deliver with excellence, perhaps starting with what you are already known for.

Matthew Januszek If your facility is well-located in terms of transport and access in general, make the most of this. Many start-up boutiques will operate in out-of-town locations that are hard for people to reach. 4. Build a community Foster a solid community among a driven group of like-minded fitness enthusiasts. Encourage and support connection and community: experiences, events and rewards will likely play a huge part in this. 5. Get more from mobile Make the most of your facility’s existing social media and mobile technology to encourage members to sign up, share and get on board with your boutique experience. 6. Cut through the red tape A potential stumbling block for large operators installing a boutique

9. Know your customers What is the potential member type for your new boutique offering? And what type of experience are they willing to pay for? 10. Go for it! Most of all, be prepared to fail, learn and adapt as you move into the boutique sector. Keep things flexible, innovative and open to change. An opportunity for the middle tier As Nicola pointed out when we published her list, many middletier operators are facing the risk that members leave them, choosing instead to join a budget gym for their day-to-day workouts, complementing this with visits to boutiques. The challenge for the middle tier is to create an experience that makes people want to stay. I believe that this is possible. There can indeed be a bright future for any club led by people passionate about attention to detail and who put all the right elements in place. n Matthew Januszek is customer solutions director at Escape Fitness. Elevate, the UK’s largest cross-sector event focused on tackling physical inactivity, is set to return this May 10-11, in a new, larger venue for 2017 – ExCel in London. The event unites the physical activity sector, academia, healthcare, government and sports performance to focus on the increasingly important and complex societal challenge of tackling physical inactivity. Dance class launches with backing of Dragons’ Den A NEW dance fitness class has launched thanks to backing from TV’s Dragons’ Den. Developed by entrepreneur Scott Cupit, whose pitch secured investment on the show, SwingTrain is a workout accompanied by the vintage vibes of swing, gospel, rhythm and blues and jazz. The full body cardio workout focuses on legs, arms and core, as well as developing co-ordination and mental agility through memorable routines. Scott said: “As is the Swing Patrol ethos, SwingTrain sessions are designed to foster friendships as well

as fitness. The atmosphere in the workout sessions is so supportive and uplifting that participants don’t even realise they’re burning up to 500 calories an hour because they’re smiling so much. “The best thing about SwingTrain is that it’s accessible to everyone, no matter their age, fitness levels or abilities. All that’s required is a desire for a positive experience. “Each instructor will be running their own SwingTrain business, so hopefully we’re bringing a little bit of Dragons’ Den’s entrepreneurial spirit to their local area, not just a new fitness regime.”

REFURBISHMENT, SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE

University’s expansion is revealed

THE University of Bath has unveiled plans to invest up to £3.5m in developing its Sports Training Village gym. The existing gym, which has been recently refurbished, will remain open, with the new offering more than doubling the current capacity of 105 exercise stations. It will also include a dedicated group exercise space, zones for functional training and state-ofthe-art equipment. University of Bath director of sport, Stephen Baddeley, said: “This is fantastic news for students, staff, public and elite athletes alike and particularly for those who are on our gym waiting list. “Our gym is hugely popular and whilst our sports offer is already a national leader, we are constantly seeking to improve it.” The new facilities are estimated to be open early in 2018. fits in with that perfectly. “Now when our membership team tour people round, one of the things they notice straight away is where all the different areas are and how clearly they are labelled up. It’s a big talking point and been received really well.” After asking members around the club what they would like to see in an improved gym, Stuart said the feedback since the refurbishment has been really positive, with customers also pleased with the fact their views have been listened to and acted on. He added: “Members have now seen the equipment has been installed

and we’ve had some really positive feedback. “People are recognising that when they ask for different equipment, where possible we are actively going to do something about it. They really appreciate that we’ve spoken to them and acted on it.” n Have you started 2017 with new facilities, a revamped class timetable or even plans to open more sites? BOOM Cycle in Holborn has benefited from a revamp to incorporate a male and female showering and changing zone, with features including the latest Dyson hairdryers – inkeeping with the club’s ethos of offering a luxury, high end experience. A further studio has also been added to the site, meaning classes can be run simultaneously and further equipping the club to cope with an increase in demand. Co-founder Robert Rowland said: “In January in previous years, it’s taken about three weeks for people to get back into it, but this year, the first week back was the busiest start to any month ever. “We’ve built a second studio on site as our peak classes were running at the best part of 100 per cent occupancy. “This gives us more freedom (to run classes) and also to do more things like charity rides.” When BOOM Cycle opened back in 2011 boutique fitness was still very

A second free weights floor featuring some of the latest functional training equipment has been added at The Metrodome in Barnsley.

Successful expansion at flagship facility BARNSLEY Premier Leisure’s flagship facility The Metrodome is keeping existing members happy – and attracting new ones – following a successful expansion. The club, which was shortlisted at the 2016 National Fitness Awards, has added a second floor to its free weights room in order to accommodate its ever growing membership base. Developed in consultation with the gym’s members and personal trainers, the area includes some of the latest in functional training

equipment – including a prowler track – while the club’s main gym has also benefited from new kit including Stairmasters and Jacob’s Ladder. The work was completed in time for the January membership rush and also coincides with upgrades at several other local gyms; ensuring the Metrodome is remaining competitive in an increasingly crowded marketplace. Digital media and PR executive Lewis Hartley said: “The big battle for us is capacity. We are up to 6,000 members, which is the most we’ve

ever had. “We wanted to free up space and create more of a functional area to add something different that no-one else in the area can offer.” To encourage members to feel part of the process, plans for the development were displayed around the club, e-mails were sent out asking for feedback and member forums were held to discuss what customers would like to see. The Metrodome’s personal trainers were also encouraged to give their input and were really keen to add a

bigger functional area for use with their clients. Lewis added: “Overall, it’s been really successful. The personal trainers are also loving it. We’ve done some Facebook Live workshops (to showcase the facilities), getting people on the stations doing different things. “Existing members are on a price for life policy, so they can enjoy all of the new stuff without having to pay more for it. That’s quite a big selling point, especially as the price for new members has gone up slightly.”

Leisure Centre’s gym undergoes major refurb PENDLE Leisure Centre has been completely refurbished. The centre was under pressure to modernise with new gyms opening in the local area, so working with key members at Pendle Leisure Trust, supplier Fitness Warehouse devised a plan to improve the gym so it would attract new members without sacrificing existing memberships. As part of the improvements, new flooring and wall art have been fitted, alongside top of the range Gym Gear performance series cardio, strength

and functional training equipment. Pendle Leisure Centre now has something for everyone, with elements of a traditional gym sitting alongside current trends such as functional training and strength and conditioning, plus a few unique machines which are already generating interest. Health and fitness manager Luke Allwood said: “We invited Fitness Warehouse to Pendle Leisure Centre to look at injecting some new life into the club to help us grow our

membership under increasing competition in the local area. “We had heard very positive reviews on the Gym Gear equipment and their reputation for providing excellent service. “After spending some time in our centre they went away and devised a plan to completely transform the gym and bring it in line with current fitness trends and technology. “The level of communication to explain their recommendations, along with 3D gym designs, made it

easy for us to visualise the end result. “We now have the most technologically advanced Gym Gear cardio machines, and a few unique machines like the Jacobs Ladder and Tornado bikes, which have gone down a storm with members. “Fitness Warehouse put our logo on nearly all the equipment, which adds a really nice finishing touch. “I now feel through the many positive comments and my own personal experience that our gym is the best in our local area.”

Giving your gym a new look can be much cheaper than you think AS you can see in the photos, simply changing the upholstery in your gym will dramatically improve the look, not only of your equipment, but of your club too. And it’s easier than you might think. Gone are the days of taking your own pads off and taking them to a local upholsterer to be recovered in a mismatched fabric, leaving machines out of action for days or even weeks on end, or even ordering expensive replacements from the manufacturer, waiting for them to be delivered and then paying someone to fit them or messing around fitting them yourself. Thanks to the guys at Gym Wizard all it takes now is a quick phone call and you can let them do the rest. You might not think much when a van pulls up at your club, until you see what’s in the back. A fully kitted out upholstery workshop with sewing machines, staple guns, a trimming bench and a lot of rolls of fabric. Wood and woodworking tools and sheets of foam for those pads that that are a little worse for wear. Basically, everything required for professional upholstery work. The guys take the pads that require

attention from a couple of your machines at a time, and in their place leave a polite, professional looking sign informing your customers that you are renewing the upholstery and the machines will be ready to use again very soon. And it really is quick. The guys take the pads outside and into their mobile workshop and within half an hour or so, the pads are back on the machines and the next batch are being removed for the same treatment. A typical gym can be fully recovered within the day for about the same as it costs you to replace a deck and belt on two of your treadmills. Not bad when you think about it – nobody notices what you spend on maintenance but they can’t help but notice this. Don’t be thinking you need to be getting your full gym upholstered for them to come out to you either. They’re just as happy to come out and recover a handful of pads and can easily match them up to your existing upholstery colour. Gym Wizard was set up eight years ago after realising the need for a dedicated, hassle free upholstery ser-

vice and have over 25 years’ experience in the fitness industry, so it’s safe to say they know what they are talking about. Their customer portfolio speaks volumes. From the very smallest personal trainers and private

clubs right up to the biggest chains, prisons and county councils, even the major manufacturers themselves. For more information visit www.gym-wizard.com or call 0700 3400 335

Refurbished gym offers members a new way of training By Olivia Taylor A MANCHESTER gym owner is moving with the times by introducing members to a new way of training. Paramount Fitness in Urmston teamed up with Fitness Systems who replaced all out of date equipment. Gym owner Jeanette Bibby said: “The refurbishment was definitely needed. “We bought the gym five years ago and we inherited all the equipment, so it was definitely tired.”

Jeanette’s aim was to give her members a more modern and up to date way of exercising, installing a functional rig and adding MetaFit to the club’s class timetable. Fitness Systems provided members at Paramount Fitness with free weights, resistance machines and a functional training rig from their Force collection. The Force equipment was developed over 40 years ago, and is suitable for every type of club, whether it’s an independent facility

or a bigger chain. She added: “We’ve literally replaced everything in the gym except the cardio stuff. “We’ve now got a functional training rig and it’s been really funny actually. “When members came in and saw it for the first time, they were like what is that and how do I use it? Now we’ve taught them what to do they love it, and it’s great to see them using it.” Originally Jeanette was planning to refurbish the gym independently, but a fellow gym owner put her in contact

with the Fitness Systems team. Fitness Systems work closely with gym owners to supply them with the ideal equipment for their fitness facility, giving them access to a range of different fitness brands. Jeanette added: “I’m just so glad I was put in touch with Fitness Systems because they’ve been great right from the beginning. “Even members have come forward and told me that the refurbishment has actually improved the whole atmosphere in the gym.”

Why do gyms need mirrors? EVERYBODY regardless of workout type or level of personal fitness, benefits from mirrors in a gym – whether to check your posture, selfcorrect, self-motivate, or simply check your appearance on the way out. For this reason, it is very important to consider the most effective places to position these mirrors. There are two main reasons for needing mirrors in gym design: Practically, it makes a work out space much safer. Stretching areas and free weight zones are a good place for mirrors in order for clients to see their posture and position during stretching and weightlifting exercises. Mirrors offer visual feedback and enable you to see exactly what your body is doing. Aesthetically they create a professional environment, make the most of the room’s natural or artificial light, and give the appearance of making the space feel larger than it actually is. So where should we position mirrors in the gym? Consider where they can be positioned to reflect natural light in to the space. i.e opposite windows. If you require the room to be used as a dance studio or aerobics space you may require full length mirrors so you can see your body position and

alignment at all times. Often it is not beneficial to have full length mirrors as some of the wall space will be taken up by equipment or storage, in which case the mirrors can be placed horizontally, usually 50cm from the ground. It is useful to install chequer plate below the mirrors in the weights area as this helps protect the mirrors from damage. Most importantly when choosing mirrors for a public area is the safety factor. You must make sure you choose safety backed mirrors. This is a special film attached to the mirror that ensures pieces of mirror broken from an impact will not fall out onto the floor. This is particularly important for a gym manager to consider, as this type of mirror could prevent serious injury. Mirrors for Training’s system of installation is unique and has the added benefit of enabling the mirrors to be easily moved should this be necessary in the future. Whether your project requires a single mirror installation or several walls of a large-scale commercial development, our optimally functioning mirrors and great value deals are guaranteed to meet the most quality conscious demands with flawless fulfilment.
