Industry’s finest are honoured at best event yet By Christina Eccles AN inspirational gym founder; a Lancashire independent health club and a North East based personal trainer were among the winners at the 2014 National Fitness Awards, which was attended by the biggest audience to date of almost 800 people. The awards, organised by Script Events in partnership with Workout and with support from headline sponsor ServiceSport are now in their fifth year and recognise excellence and achievement from all corners of the fitness industry. This year’s event took place at The Athena in Leicester, hosted by boxing legend Ricky Hatton and TV presenter Caroline Pearce. The night’s big winners included Ribby Hall Village Health Club in Preston, which was crowned Regional Gym of the Year and Group Exercise Gym of the Year; Fitness Garage in Sheffield – named Best Newcomer – and Winners 2000 Fitness in Devon which scooped Regional Gym of the Year South and the night’s big prize, National Gym of the Year. A Special Recognition award was also posthumously awarded to Elvis Meade of Ripped Gym in Harlow, whose wife Michelle accepted the tro-

phy on the evening. The club also won Strength Training Gym of the Year for a record third time. Following the awards, attendees billed it as the best event yet. Judge Kim Ingleby said: “I felt incredibly proud to be a judge, although deciding who should win was definitely tough. The level, support and depth of each application was impressive, a real testament to the industry we work within.” Sponsor Dave Wright, CEO of CFM/MYZONE, added: “Our staff loved it, our clients loved it and the amount of suppliers still kicking on until the early hours indicated they loved it too. The complete cross section of facilities acknowledged and rewarded was fantastic.” NFA director Judith Halkerston added: “The calibre of entry this year was excellent and to come out winners in any of our categories is an amazing achievement. It was great to see so many gyms at the awards and to share in the celebrations of our winners. We're the biggest, free-toenter fitness awards and it's always a wonderful evening when we can recognise all that is good about our industry and reward excellence, innovation and hard work."

CKI School of Martial Arts founder Ismail Saleh with his two awards.

Lifetime Achievement award celebrates Ismail’s dedication FOUNDER of CKI School of Martial Arts, Ismail Saleh won this year’s National Fitness Awards’ Lifetime Achievement accolade, in recognition of his long standing commitment and dedication to the industry. Ismail voluntarily runs a club attended by over 950 people every week, with many of his students having gone on to win regional, national and international medals, making CKI one of the most successful martial arts clubs in the country. He picked up the trophy – sponsored by Harlands Group – on the awards’ evening at The Athena, just down the road from his Leicester based club. Following the win, Ismail said: “My heartfelt thanks to you all. Words can-

not describe what I want to say. It has still not sunk in yet. I can never repay you all for your friendliness and kindness shown to me and my family.” Ismail and his team also had a second reason to celebrate at the awards, as CKI School of Martial Arts was awarded the trophy for Community Involvement – sponsored by Technogym – for the second time. Judges praised it for being “an inspiring winner”, also commending Ismail on his passion for helping others and for his friendly and approachable attitude. Star gives gym owner Helen the surprise of her lifetime By Christina Eccles PIONEERING independent gym owner Helen Tite was recognised for the important contribution she makes to her local community when staff and members conspired to give her the surprise of a lifetime. Helen, who owns The Core Fitness and Wellbeing Centre in Falmouth, was kept completely in the dark when member Ali Hunt nominated her to appear on Surprise Surprise; joining forces with fellow clients, staff and ITV to ensure Helen didn’t suspect anything in the run up to her appearance on the show. Following a summer of filming, which Helen believed was to gain footage for a programme about the positive effects of physical activity on long term health conditions, she was invited to the ITV studios for a meeting with show producers. Or so she thought... On arrival, Helen was set up in a fake cafe before singing sensation Olly Murs appeared to surprise her. Within seconds of his appearance, she was whisked onto the set of Surprise Surprise to meet show host Holly Willoughby who explained she’d been nominated for her efforts in

Helen said: “It was really humbling. It’s a massive act of kindness that someone has recognised someone in our profession. It was just wonderful. A once in a lifetime experience.” The show featured footage and testimonials from people who have benefited from Helen’s exercise rehabilitation classes; including one member who was diagnosed with cervical cancer at the age of 30 and National Fitness Awards’ Member Achievement runner up Judith Green who has been attending Zumba sessions to help manage her Parkinson’s Disease. Helen added: “Any group exercise instructor will say this is what we do

Sporta and the Football League Trust launches Moving Together pilot By Christina Eccles HUNDREDS of inactive people in Doncaster could improve their health, thanks to an innovative new partnership between two charities. Sporta and the Football League Trust have joined forces to pilot a programme to increase sports participation for people aged 35-55. The Moving Together project will see Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust and Club Doncaster Foundation – which links Doncaster Rovers FC and Doncaster Rugby League FC – work together to increase participation in sport at four venues across the town. Together they have been awarded £15,000 of Sport England’s Lottery Funding to pilot the project, which if successful could be rolled out nationally. Led by Club Doncaster coaches, the project will offer badminton, cricket and football, initially in an informal, fun and non-competitive environment. The 12-week sessions will become slightly more formal and will create mini leagues and cross site competitions across the four venues. DCLT’s community sports officer

Craig Aubrey said: "DCLT are excited to work with Sporta, The Football League Trust and Club Doncaster on this new project. “We believe this project will help kick start the health of many in Doncaster, using all four partners to ensure the quality and sustainability of the initiative. “As a charitable trust with Doncaster's health at heart, we believe this complements many of the other programmes we deliver, and we look forward to it's success.” The project is part of the Sporta wider, Make Your Move programme which has seen over 30 charitable leisure trusts across England benefit from Sport England Lottery Funding. Sporta CEO, Brian Leonard added: “This new project in Doncaster shows the great ability and enthusiasm of local trusts and charities to help more people in their communities become more active. “DCLT and Club Doncaster have come forward with an imaginative proposal, thanks to a positive relationship created nationally between Sporta and The Football League Trust.” A third round of funding will be open early in 2015.

Thousands of runners dressed as Santa took to the streets of Liverpool for the BTR Liverpool 5k Santa Dash. 8,500 Santas defied challenging weather conditions to take part in the event which started at the Pier Head on the city’s world famous waterfront, before finishing outside Liverpool Town Hall. The event also featured the biggest ever mini dash 1k for youngsters aged 12 and under.

No work out, no meeting says fitness company LES Mills is continuing its quest for a fitter planet by asking all guests attending its office for a meeting to participate in a class before or afterwards. If people can’t commit on the day, there will be a 48-hour gentleman’s agreement to take part in a class and if anyone can’t do this, they will encouraged to make a £10 donation to the Les Mills Fund for Children. CEO of Les Mills UK Keith Burnet said: “It still stuns me that so many people who work in health and fitness

don’t exercise or have a go at the classes and programmes their members enjoy day in, day out. “So in a bid to inspire and motivate people to experience the power of group exercise, anyone who has a meeting here in our offices in Aldgate, London will be asked participate in a Les Mills class. “We have a range of classes for beginners to hardened fitness fans so there’s something for everyone; and coupled with a fantastic studio in our office there’s no excuse.”

Katie Bulmer-Cooke faces the music in the boardroom after project managing the losing team on the premium puddings challenge.

Apprentice star hopes to inspire others By Christina Eccles STAR of The Apprentice Katie Bulmer-Cooke has revealed why she hopes taking part in the show will help encourage other fitness professionals to think big when it comes to their businesses. Sunderland personal trainer Katie, who made it to week 10 of the 12week process, was among 20 candidates competing on the BBC One programme for the chance to become Lord Sugar’s business partner and win a £250,000 investment to turn their business plan into reality. And she told Workout, although

she didn’t win, the whole experience saw her learn some valuable lessons she can apply in her own business, as well as hopefully be inspiring to other industry professionals. She said: “To have the chance to be Lord Sugar’s business partner and learn from him was an opportunity that couldn’t be missed. I felt it would really take my business to the next level. “I’m very glad I took part. It was a fantastic experience and although I didn’t go all the way, I hope that me being on the programme showed other fitness professionals that fitness can be a serious business.” Katie’s business plan was to open a

healthy eating restaurant, initially in Sunderland, and then potentially expand around the country, and she still feels that with the right investment, it is a viable business idea. She added: “I wanted to open a restaurant to put a healthy twist on the foods people like to eat, with scope to make it into a chain. “In my mind, organisations such as Weight Watchers, Slimming World and other fitness professionals would also get involved as it would be somewhere they could give their clients to go.” After spending the last several years being self employed, Katie also said she enjoyed working as

part of a team when it came to doing the tasks each week, particularly being on the winning side and getting to experience one of the celebratory treats laid on by Lord Sugar. She added: “It was really good fun. It was very stressful and high pressured at times – and full of highs and lows – but a really good experience. “I’ve become a better sales person and a stronger leader and learned loads of new skills. “I really liked being in a team and it was a great experience working alongside such motivated individuals.”

Health and wellbeing top of the agenda at South Suffolk Leisure The team which piloted Speed Golf at Beauchief Golf Course in Sheffield.

Golfers get up to speed with unique new game A GOLF course in Yorkshire has come up with a unique new way for players to enjoy a round in less than half the time – and improve their fitness. Speed Golf has been piloted at Beauchief Golf Course in Sheffield, offering players a quicker version of the game and the chance to work out at the same time. The aim is to get round 18 holes as quickly as possible without running. Scoring is made up of the number of shots each player takes combined with the time it took them to get round the course. Sheffield City Trust, which operates the course, tested the concept with a game for 10 employees and business partners won by SCT’s golf manager Andy Carnall, who completed the course in 67 minutes.

SCT chief executive Steve Brailey said: “We’re always looking for new and innovative ways to engage local people in physical activity and we believe this is a UK-first. The feedback we had from the pilot was fantastic and we think Speed Golf could really take off.” All players wore MYZONE physical activity belts which measured the effort, calories and heart rate when they were tackling the course. Participants burnt more than 14,000 calories between them, earning 350 MYZONE Effort Points each. Sheffield City Trust is hoping to launch the new concept later this year and will be putting on a number of events in January and February for players to provide feedback on the game.

SOUTH Suffolk Leisure is reaping the benefits of putting staff through an education programme focusing on community health and wellbeing. Partnering with Active IQ, 25 staff members at SSL have completed the Promoting Community Health and Wellbeing Level two qualification. Staff, from apprentices to gym instructors, customer service advisors to business development managers, enrolled on the Active IQ course in November 2013. The three-day course delivered by Premier Training, comprised a range of topics including nutrition, healthy eating, alcohol and smoking awareness and collecting, managing and personal data reporting. The overarching aim of the course is to encourage, support and enable clients to make sustainable changes to their lifestyles. Twelve months on and with 25 health and wellbeing practitioners now supporting the community, the charity is seeing positive results. South Suffolk Leisure CEO Tracey Loynds said: “Since introducing the course we’ve seen an increase in community engagement and activity, our fitness memberships are up 12 per cent.

“Our staff are much more health conscious and confident in their meaningful delivery of health and wellbeing advice to a wider proportion of our community. In turn, they are now delivering a much higher standard of customer service to our members. “The course has provided the perfect foundation for our staff to continue building their health and wellbeing knowledge and the additional units covering dementia and mental health have driven us to create innovative behavioural management intervention programmes, with 30 per cent of participants signing up for further membership after the 12-week programme. “We’ve also been asked to chair a number of Dementia Action Alliance Groups, which aims to create a dementia friendly community with local business signing up to support and encourage staff to become dementia friends.” Jenny Patrickson, commercial director at Active IQ, added: “The success that South Suffolk Leisure has seen in the past year is testament to the value of the course and the passion of the staff to deliver the best advice and service to their community.”

Flexible packages to be a top trend, claims expert By Christina Eccles

Tom Penny at the opening of the Aqua Vitae Spa at Matfen Hall Hotel.

Spa gets Tom’s seal of approval A NEW £300,000 spa has opened at a Northumberland hotel, gaining the seal of approval from one of the region’s rising rugby stars, Tom Penny. The Aqua Vitae Spa is the latest development in a programme of investment at Matfen Hall Hotel, and facilities include a thermal suite; ice bucket shower and ice fountains and a multi-headed monsoon shower, offering a choice of temperatures and water patterns. In addition, hotel residents, day guests and spa members can enjoy

full use of the 16m swimming pool and spa pool along with a range of treatments. The installation of the thermal suite follows the opening of a new fitness suite at the hotel earlier this year. General manager Bernard Bloodworth said: “People come to Matfen Hall for many reasons and relaxation is one of the main ones, which is why we are delighted to be able to provide some of the most superb facilities the region has to offer.”

NO contract memberships will be a top trend this year, according to an industry expert, as gymgoers look for more flexible packages to meet their needs. Co-founder of PayasUgym Jamie Ward told Workout that over the coming months, customers will be looking for more than just an annual membership offer; instead shopping around online to find the best deals for them. He explained: “An even greater number of gyms will be experimenting with no-contract memberships, with the exception of perhaps one or two high end operators. “Whilst the traditional annual gym membership remains a core service for many, it is clear that customers are increasingly looking to be provided with a better 'menu' of services so that they can choose the right package for them. “No-contract memberships are here to stay and the industry will need to work harder than ever on customer service and standards in order to earn loyalty rather than

contractually enforce it.” Jamie added that operators who want to thrive in 2015 should ensure they are easily visible online – and well represented by positive customer feedback – to ensure they are able to capitalise on this trend, something which PayasUgym can help with. He added: “We believe PayasUgym is well placed to address these developing trends in terms of our online presence and the platform we provide to gyms to offer flexible membership packages to attract new customers. “Working with more than 2,200 gyms and health clubs gives us a significant advantage in terms of the online marketing power we can provide to our partners. “PayasUgym captures huge volumes of online customer traffic which we can turn into paying customers at the clubs listed on our site. “With record numbers of customer shopping online for gym services, PayasUgym is now the destination of choice for any customer considering all types of gym membership.”

Editor’s Comment WELCOME to the January issue of Workout – and the start of another busy year for the industry! We’re now looking ahead at what the coming months will bring for operators, but before welcoming in 2015, we finished 2014 with a bang at the fifth National Fitness Awards, which saw us return to The Athena in Leicester; one of our most popular venues to date. We welcomed almost 800 people there for the awards ceremony a few weeks ago – superbly hosted by Ricky Hatton and Caroline Pearce – and it was great to see so many of our readers on the night and celebrate your successes. A big well done to all our winners and runners up and a huge thank you to our sponsors who continue to support the event year on year. We’re already thinking about the 2015 NFAs, so if you have any comments, views or suggestions as to how

you would like to see the awards develop, we’d love to hear from you. For those of you who want to relive all the action from the night or who couldn’t make it to the event, we’ve included a round up this issue, complete with a full list of winners and second place clubs, as well as pictures and comments from our judges as to why they decided on the worthy winners. Turn to page 45 to take a look. Also this month, we did our bit for charity by swapping our work clothes for some festive fashion to take part in Christmas Jumper Day, in aid of Save the Children. If you did the same or held any other events over the Christmas season, we’d love to know how they went. Send us some pictures and we’ll use the best next issue. I also enjoyed meeting popular The Apprentice candidate Katie BulmerCooke, when she came to Barnsley for the recent LFX conference at The Metrodome. On page six, you can

Christina Eccles read why she pushed herself out of her comfort zone to take part in the show and the lessons she learned from the process. Enjoy the issue and best wishes for 2015 from the Workout team. We look forward to working with you over the coming year.

The new look class studio at Gym 64.

Gym’s studio gets a revamp DUNFERMLINE club Gym 64 is marking the new year with a new look after revamping its class studio. Following the work, the gym can now accommodate up to 60 people per class and is running a range of popular sessions such as Les Mills’ BodyPump, BodyCombat and BodyAttack. Gym owner Scott Wallace explained: “The studio is fully mirrored, air conditioned with spring flooring and boasts Les Mills’ hand painted artwork graffiti on the walls. This is perhaps the most striking and unique

part of the studio as it really gives it its own identity. “We've got it looking absolutely fantastic. There were 60 people at the launch night and it went down really really well.” The club is also gearing up for the start of its latest charity challenge, where members will be encouraged to burn calories while raising money for the Mary Leishman Foundation. Prizes will be rewarded to the winners of the challenge and also for those who have raised the most money for their efforts.

ukactive campaign wins award UKACTIVE triumphed at the Public Affairs Awards 2014 where the organisation won the Trade Body Campaign of the Year award for Turning the Tide of Inactivity. The campaign was up against competition from the Airport Operators Association and R3 Association of Business Recovery Professionals. CEO David Stalker said: “We couldn’t be more delighted with this

award. This is an emphatic response to a report that has already garnered a huge amount of support from across government, sector, brands and private enterprise. “Aside from that, the endorsement of decision makers who recognise excellence in advocacy communications and public affairs it great recognition of the hard work put into this robust report.”

Physical activity is the ‘simplest and cheapest’ route to good health By Christina Eccles PHYSICAL activity is the ‘simplest and cheapest’ route to good health, according to shadow secretary of state for health Andy Burnham, who at a recent conference set out Labour’s plans for a national ambition to make the country more active. Speaking at the annual ukactive Summit in London – a day which focused on solving inactivity – the MP called for a move to a more preventative NHS model, which has physical activity at its core, as well as a greater commitment to increased levels of school sport to get children engaged with leading healthy lifestyles from a young age. He said: “This government had the best inheritance in terms of sport – and they have squandered it. “This should be the moment when this country makes a big change on levels of physical activity and I do not see that happening. “Sport builds strong people and a strong country. Physical activity is the simplest and cheapest route to good health.” At the event, he set out Labour’s ambition to tackle the inactivity epidemic, claiming physical activity will

Andy Burnham be at the centre of the party’s election policy and a priority for investment. He added: “I will make no apology for a government acting as a nanny state for children – they are not able to make their own decisions. There is much more we could do as a society to give children a healthier and better start than we are today. “When every child leaves primary school, they should be able to swim and ride a bike safely. “With adults, we should be empowering people to make their own informed choices. “The move from inactivity to activity is the easiest lifestyle change to make and it is a catalystic change.”

Mobile phones the most common way to monitor calories, research claims By Christina Eccles

Jennifer and Lucy West

Ambitious twins to compete at NABBA By Olivia Taylor A PAIR of ambitious twins are set to compete together in body building competition NABBA later this year. Jennifer and Lucy West lead very different working lives; Lucy has an office job in recruitment, whereas Jennifer is a committed personal trainer at Total Fitness in Wigan. But they both have a shared love of fitness – and are looking forward to taking to the stage. Jennifer said: “I can’t wait for my sister to do the competition. Because we’re twins what works for me works for her.” The pair have changed their diet and lifestyle in order to succeed in the competition, sticking to clean foods

and training hard. She added: “It’s been a learning curve, I’ve sacrificed a lot of things. but it all becomes worth it when you get on that stage.” Jennifer has always been interested in keeping fit and healthy but her passion for body building and weight lifting sparked after she got involved in a Les Mills Body Pump class. And her clients have spurred her on ever since she entered her first event. She added: “Les Mills Body Pump got me into the weights. I was lifting the same weights as the lads. “They’re all really grateful and hard working, they like the fact that I’m always available for them, it’s so good to get clients telling me I’ve changed their life.”

HALF of Brits would now consider using wearable fitness technology or a health and fitness app in their own home or park, as opposed to going to the gym, research has claimed. According to research by O2, applications and the internet now account for how 75 per cent of the UK gathers information on health and fitness. Calories proved the most popular thing to monitor with 60 per cent of Brits utilising their mobile tech to count calories. The traditional pedometer was shown to be dying as steps and miles/kilometers proved to be the next most popular areas to monitor, with 36 per cent and 35 per cent of Brits monitoring them via their mobile device respectively. Northern Ireland proved to be the area where wearable tech and health and fitness applications have become an especially important part of dayto-day lifestyle, with almost 70 per cent of respondents feeling that the use of health and fitness applications had helped them to build a healthier lifestyle. Scotland and the North East of

England were equally focused with 67 per cent and 65 per cent respectively believing mobile tech had helped them. In comparison, well under half of those who responded in Wales and the East Midlands felt that health and fitness applications would help them lead a healthier lifestyle. General manager devices for O2 in the UK Magnus McDonald said: “Being able to support and track our lifestyles through our mobile devices is fast becoming an essential part of our day-to-day lives. “The fact that nearly half of Brits have used a health and fitness application or wearable tech in the last week proves that this is a trend that is here to stay. “It’s especially beneficial at this time of year when there’s more to tempt people, be it mince pies or glasses of champagne.” What do you think? Is technology a threat to gyms? Or can operators use it as an opportunity to capitalise on an increased public interest in health and fitness? Send your comments to our editorial team at ce@scriptmedia.co.uk or contact us on Facebook or Twitter.

FIBO Innovation Tour dates TRENDS and challenges in the sector will be explored at a seminar in London, taking place later this month. The FIBO Innovation Tour will stop off in the capital on January 29, bringing together trade fair exhibitors operators, partners and associations, with similar events planned in Paris, Madrid and Copenhagen in February.

The focus will be on the question of how gym operators can improve their positioning in the market and how even more people can be motivated to exercise long-term. Speakers will include retention guru Dr Paul Bedford, as well as a keynote speech taking a closer look at the Deloitte – Europe Active European Market Report 2014.

Over 50 pieces of Cybex strength and cardio equipment have been introduced as part of the renovation at ToneZone.

National Aquatic Centre revamps in-house gym THE ToneZone gym at the National Aquatic Centre has undergone a major refurbishment, in partnership with fitness equipment supplier Cybex, in order to improve its facilities for the site’s broad range of clients. The major renovation has included the installation of 790T Treadmills, the Bravo Functional Training System and Big Iron Combo Rack. In addition, the venue, which served as a pre-Olympic training camp for 13 countries in 2012, is now home to the 770 series Total Body and Lower Body Arc Trainers and a multi-station Jungle Gym. Gym manager Chris Melia said: “We decided it was time for the gym to move with industry trends, while maintaining the right balance and facilities for our current clients; con-

sequently Cybex was chosen following a stringent tender process where we decided that the premium quality and design of Cybex equipment was the best fit for us. “The site is used by a variety of individuals of all abilities, from everyday gymgoers all the way up to international athletes, so it was necessary to install a wide range of equipment to serve our clients’ needs. “The feedback has already been greater than we anticipated; we now have the equipment to match the quality of service we provide, which has created a real buzz with both members and staff.” NAC is the latest addition to Cybex’s growing portfolio of gyms in Ireland, which includes University College Dublin, West Wood Health Clubs and the University of Limerick.

FITNESS classes with a difference have become a talking point at a studio in South Yorkshire where teacher Colin Dobson doesn't expect his clients to wear expensive gym wear... In fact, he doesn’t expect them to wear anything at all. Colin, you see, teaches fitness classes for naturists and he does it naked. Colin said: “I coach more than 25 clients from all walks of life, in their own homes, outdoors, or at my gym and private studio in Barnsley. “I also teach a thriving online naturist community via Skype and Yahoo.” But isn’t exercising naked dangerous? The answer is a resounding no. “I don’t ask ladies to run naked on a machine and chaps don’t do it either – it’s not a good idea for obvious reasons. Most of my classes consist of mat work and stretching, Pilates and yoga.” But why would anyone want to exercise in the buff? Colin added: “I’ve spent many years doing clothes-free activities. I particularly enjoy the outdoors, rambling, hiking and cycling. “I’ve been teaching naturist groups for four years now and the classes are popular. “Some people come along to see what it’s like. Some love it, others don’t. But most of the people who try it come back time and again. “I don’t have to advertise. People come to my classes after being recommended by a friend.” His clients consist of men and women aged from 19 to well into their

Colin Dobson 70s. But Colin only started teaching fitness classes to naked people by accident. He added: “It was in December 2010 when someone dared me to go out and clear heavy snow without wearing any clothes for a charity stunt. I have been a naturist since my late teens, so I did it. “The stunt was put on the internet and went viral raising £12,000 for the charity. “The TV people picked it up and described me in a news bulletin as a naked fitness trainer. “Someone saw it, put two and two together, and asked if I taught fitness classes in the nude. And I thought well why not?”

Sports clubs to be set up NEW sports clubs will be set up in the Salford area to encourage more youngsters to take up a sport and enjoy free coaching. These include instant ping pong, rush hockey, smash up badminton, cardio tennis and street dance.

City mayor Ian Stewart said: “The idea of creating Doorstep Sport Clubs is to ensure that exciting sporting facilities are available just around the corner for every youngster in Salford. “Our clubs will be part of 700 to be opened around the country through StreetGames thanks to £6m awarded by Sport England and £3.38m awarded by National Lottery with the aim of transforming the sporting and social landscape in hundreds of communities.”

Club gets off to a flyer and attracts top names By Christina Eccles

Sandra Dodd is to be appointed CEO of Places for People Leisure Management, following the announcement Steve Philpott will be retiring after 11 years in the role. Sandra has 20 years’ experience in the company, including 12 years as finance director. Places for People Group CEO David Cowans said: “Following a competitive recruitment process we are delighted to have appointed Sandra Dodd, who has an impressive track record and in depth knowledge of the business. Sandra, a chartered management accountant, is passionate about the business and the positive impact it has to the communities we serve by creating active places and healthy people.”

A FLEDGLING independent club in Middlesborough has got off to a flying start; attracting some of the industry’s top names through its doors and being crowned the country’s second best new gym. The team at MAS Body Gym is celebrating after scooping the runner up prize in the Newcomer of the Year category at The National Fitness Awards; beating off strong competition from five other finalists to claim the second place spot. The achievement follows a successful year for the club, which is also a training ground for the likes of fitness models and competitors Ryan Terry, Luke Sandoe and Carly Thornton, who the gym sponsors with its MAS Body Development clothing range. Gym owner Mike Hind said: “When I went on holiday, I used to visit gyms in different countries. I learned a lot from looking at what other countries are doing; it gives you a better insight into the fitness industry as a whole. “When I went to America, my biggest inspiration was Gold’s Gym. Everything from the moment you walk through the door, blew me away. I want to be the UK’s version of Gold’s Gym.” When the club opened, a special

Mike and the team at MAS Body Gym. offer of £150 for a year’s membership was snapped up by 100 people; generating £15,000 which Mike used to buy kit to get the business up and running. Now every month, he adds to that, using money generated by memberships and secondary spend to expand his offering. He added: “Every time we get new members, the money gets put into a pot. We ask members what they would like to see.”

Mike told Workout his biggest reason for setting up the gym was to help people get fitter and healthier, rather than to make a profit, but that the club’s NFA shortlisting meant a lot because it showed the industry is recognising the hard work that is going into his business. He added: “I work 22 hours a day but I wouldn’t change it. When we got shortlisted, I thought, this makes it all worthwhile to get that recognition from the industry.”

According to Leisure-net Solutions’ latest Health and Fitness Omnibus Survey (HAFOS), cost remains one of the most significant barriers to activity. Workout reveals what this means for operators, as well as taking a look at other findings from the survey.

Leisure-net reveals results of its HAFOS 2014 survey OVER a third (37 per cent) of UK consumers stated a low-cost membership of £10-£15 would entice them to join a gym, results showed, and lower cost was also the strongest encouragement factor at 60 per cent. Reducing fees would also persuade 60 per cent of respondents to try out their local leisure centre. As has been the case in previous years, the percentage of people understanding the importance of physical activity remains high, with 86 per cent of respondents stating regular exercise is important. But this is the lowest level seen in any previous HAFOS surveys – falling from 92 per cent in 2012. The number of people seeing exercise as ‘very important’ has also fallen considerably, from 69 per cent in 2010 to 48 per cent this year. Leisure-net Solutions director Mike Hill said: “The opportunity for our sector is clearly there; yet participation levels have again failed to increase significantly and, this year, the public’s perception of the importance of activity has dropped, too. “The stagnation in participation could be because many do not understand the ‘new offerings’ available – having not used our facilities for many years, they aren’t convinced what we’re offering is good value. “While lower cost is always the most quoted encouragement factor, and this year is no different, our detailed analysis continuously shows lowering pricing will not in itself make a difference. Price is closely related to value for money and a gym membership only becomes ‘expensive’ if it’s not being used regularly.

“That tipping point when members feel they’re not getting value for money is lower for budget gyms, so while people don’t see cost as a barrier to being more active – the main barriers remain work-related time pressures – a large percentage do say lower costs would encourage them to join gyms/leisure centres. “Much more important for operators to focus on are the psychological barriers like perceived lack of time and low motivation. Gyms and leisure centres need to continue to build short “mini” workouts into their offer, as this will help us break down the alleged time deficit barrier related to work pressures. Operators need to focus on more targeted messages and calls to action when marketing to the general population.” This year’s research also asked consumers about niche/micro gyms for the first time, and revealed 57 per cent of women and 50 per cent of men would be encouraged to join a class/activity, if it was offered in a micro/niche gym context. Mike added: “The niche/micro gym approach may be another way to turn the tide of inactivity. “Gyms which take one or two specialisms and concentrate purely on that in an extremely focused way seem to appeal to both men and women, and to all age groups in a way the low-cost model doesn’t.” The HAFOS has been running for more than a decade and is the leisure industry’s only national survey reporting the public’s attitudes and perceptions towards physical activity, including current behaviours and usage.

Gym gets into festive spirit with Christmas dinner first prize By Olivia Taylor

A football fan enjoyed a VIP trip to watch England v Slovenia after winning a national competition he entered when joining his local gym. Jamie McDonald watched England’s 2016 Euro qualifying match at Wembley after joining Bannatyne’s Health Club in Coulby Newham and being entered in to a prize draw for new members. Along with Bannatyne’s Health Clubs across the country, the club entered all new, referred members into the draw, giving them a chance to win tickets to the match. General manager Matthew Emery said: “The prize draw is a great idea and it is a great way to welcome new faces in the health club. We were delighted that Jamie could enjoy an England victory at Wembley and we look forward to seeing him in the health club in the future.”

AN independent gym in Scotland is embracing new technology and getting into the festive spirit by offering members the opportunity to win their Christmas dinner. Think Fitness 4 Less in Hawick has jumped on board with the MYZONE concept, giving members 51 days to clock up as many points as possible using the MYZONE belts to monitor and record their activity; gaining one entry into the grand Christmas Holiday Huff and Puff draw for every 1,000 MEPs they earn. Thanks to a partnership with local butcher, Denholm Meat Supplies, one lucky winner will walk away with the top prize of a 10lb turkey, 3lb gammon joint, 2lb worth of chipolata sausages, 1lb chestnut stuffing, 1lb pork, apple and cranberry stuffing and a Christmas cake, with personal training sessions on offer for runners up. Gym owner Greg Dalgleish said: “We basically wanted to get members engaged early because they’re usually not as challenged in December, coming up to Christmas, and the dinner is a good relative thing to give as a prize rather than something for the sake of it.” With 70 members taking part and people already clocking up as many as 7,500 MEPs, the challenge really is on at the club, which as Workout went to print, was urging other members to get on board for the last stretch of the Christmas challenge Greg added: “MYZONE allows us to have a platform that allows us to engage with members and see what they’ve been up to with the click of a

Think Fitness 4 Less Co-owners Greg Dalgleish and Stuart Oliver with Drew Lauder from Denholm Meat Supplies. button, it’s a good motivational tool. “The good thing is someone with 1,000 MEPs is still in with a chance, even if they start now, the MEPs are backdated so everything they’ve done from the start of the competition in November will count.” The gym has always been proactive when it comes to technology and competitiveness, making the most of MYZONE with monthly challenges and also gearing up for a Turkey Burner competition in the New Year where members will be able to burn off their Christmas calories. Look out for the next issue of Workout where we’ll be finding out how the challenge went – and revealing which lucky member walked away with a free Christmas dinner.

Health club purchased by Encore Capital LONDON based investment firm Encore Capital has acquired premium health club operator The Third Space. Encore already owns the Reebok Sports Club in London, Europe’s largest luxury health club, occupying 100,000 sqft in the heart of Canary Wharf. The acquisition supports Encore’s ambitious growth agenda; to own and operate iconic premium health clubs in key locations across the capital. Partner at Encore, Shirin Gandhi, said: “As part of our strategy to establish a London centric leading luxury health club group, we are thrilled to have acquired The Third Space – a fantastic brand with clubs in highly desirable locations. “This acquisition allows us to augment a growing proposition we are extremely proud of – offering our members a holistic, tailormade approach to health and well-being, using state-of-the-art training facilities and utilising the latest trends and techniques, all delivered in luxurious surroundings.”

Two-way radios are a lifesaver for Salford sports centres ... By Christina Eccles THE introduction of two-way radios across sport and leisure facilities in Salford is helping revolutionise customer service – and potentially save lives. Salford Community Leisure has invested in Motorola XT420 radios and six-way chargers, along with waterproof bags for sites with swimming pools. To introduce the radios, the organisation teamed-up with comms supply specialist Rocom, who conducted various site surveys before making equipment and technical recommendations. Head of sport and leisure Garry Bateman said: “We initially discussed the concept in a team meeting; primarily it was about customer service as well as health and safety. “Better communication was the key. It could be as simple as someone turning up at reception to be shown around the facility. “That member of staff can’t leave their post but they can now just radio a colleague. It’s instant, more responsive communication. “Speeding up communication and maximising resource are vital in today’s world where every penny counts. Staff numbers have been cut to the bare minimum in recent years.

Budgets are so precious and we are down to essential spends. We simply cannot afford to waste any money whatsoever. The radios have only recently gone live across all sites and the feedback has been very very positive.” According to Garry, communication is so much better since the introduction of the radios and they are also proving invaluable when it comes to dealing with emergencies. He added: “It could be an awkward customer, a broken leg from a football match or someone collapsing on a treadmill. “We find the radios are much more flexible and practical than an in-built alarm system and more discreet than using a tannoy. There are emergency alarms in the pools though. “Communication is the essence. You can’t be dealing with a life and death situation on your own. If you are resuscitating someone it’s better to be doing it in tandem with someone else. “In the last six months we have had a number of incidents including heart attacks where a radio would have helped to summon assistance from a fellow member of staff. We have defibrillators and fully trained staff who can deal with this. “We would strongly recommend all sites have radios on the grounds of

Garry Bateman customer service alone but the fact they can play a vital part in emergency incidents makes them life savers.”

American College of Sports Medicine’s top 10 fitness trends for 2015 ... By Dave Wright

organisations in the world.

ACSM has released its predictions for the Top 10 fitness trends in 2015. With New Year upon us, it might be a great time to take some of these into consideration as you evaluate programs and offerings for 2015. Top 10 trends courtesy of ACSM: 1. Body Weight Training: Body weight training uses minimal equipment making it more affordable. Not limited to just push-ups and pullups, this trend allows people to get “back to the basics” with fitness.

4. Strength Training: Strength training remains a central emphasis for many health clubs. Incorporating strength training is an essential part of a complete exercise programme for all physical activity levels and genders. The other essential components are aerobic exercise and flexibility.

2. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT): HIIT involves short bursts of activity followed by a short period of rest or recovery. These exercise programmes are usually performed in less than 30 minutes. 3. Educated and Experienced Fitness Professionals: Given the large number of organisations offering health and fitness certifications, it’s important that consumers choose professionals certified through programs that are accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), such as those offered by ACSM. ACSM is one of the largest and most prestigious fitness-certification

have more discretionary money than their younger counterparts. Therefore, many health and fitness professionals are taking the time to create age-appropriate fitness programmes to keep older adults healthy and active. 9. Functional Fitness: This is a trend toward using strength training to improve balance and ease of daily living. Functional fitness and special fitness programmes for older adults are closely related.

5. Personal Training: More and more students are majoring in kinesiology, which indicates that they are preparing themselves for careers in allied health fields such as personal training. Education, training and proper credentialing for personal trainers have become increasingly important to the health and fitness facilities that employ them. 6. Exercise and Weight Loss: In addition to nutrition, exercise is a key component of a proper weight loss programme. Health and fitness professionals who provide weight loss programmes are increasingly incorporating regular exercise and caloric restriction for better weight control in their clients. 7. Yoga: Based on ancient tradition, yoga

Dave Wright utilises a series of specific bodily postures practiced for health and relaxation. This includes Power Yoga, Yogalates, Bikram, Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Kripalu, Anurara, Kundalini, Sivananda and others. 8. Fitness Programs for Older Adults: As the baby boom generation ages into retirement, some of these people

10. Group Personal Training: In challenging economic times, many personal trainers are offering more group training options. Training two or three people at a time makes economic sense for the trainer and the clients. Indie gym launches with results driven rewards scheme By Christina Eccles MEMBERS at a new gym in Leeds will be financially rewarded the more they work out, thanks to the owner’s results driven approach to keeping fit. At Primal Gym, headed up by fitness expert Philip Wright, the more members exercise, the less they pay, As the gym’s reward scheme gives them up to £10 off each month when they achieve their fitness targets via a clear goal-setting points system. And as part of its opening celebrations, Primal Gym offered its first 500 members a special lifetime discount of £10 off per month. Philip said: “For too long, gyms have promised results and not delivered – our aim is to change this. “My team and I have spent a lot of time researching all the common frustrations gym users have and we’ve found that the main trouble with gyms today is that too often people get bored of going, they lose motivation and they don’t end up getting the results that they wanted. “Everything about Primal Gym has been designed with this in mind, knowing that when people enjoy the gym, they go more often and in turn see better results. “To demonstrate our commitment

Primal Gym owner Philip Wright. to this philosophy, we’re delighted to be the first gym in the UK to reward its members for doing more exercise and we’re looking forward to helping Leeds’ residents with our new and exciting approach to health and fitness.” With over 20 resident fitness experts, Primal will also aim to offer something different to other gyms with a ‘house team’ concept that will divide members in to colour-coded teams, encouraging new interactive types of training, creating and encourage community and fostering a competitive spirit. Fitness education provider and sister brand Primal Academy will also run training courses for professionals at the gym.

FUNCTIONAL TRAINING

Concept introduction helps centre increase its functional offering By Christina Eccles CRAIGLOCKHART Leisure and Tennis Centre has successfully expanded its functional training offering after introducing the Power Plate Integrated Fitness concept. The concept incorporates Power Plate with existing or additional training options such as ViPR, kettlebells and suspension training. The club, operated by Edinburgh Leisure which won the package at the 2014 FLAME Awards, is using it to enhance circuit training sessions and provide new challenges to small group exercise classes. As part of the package, instructors also received on-site training from a Power Plate Master Trainer to enable them to launch the new workouts and confidently instruct their members. Gym supervisor Michael Mclaughlin said: “We were delighted to have won the Integrated Fitness Package at the FLAME Awards. “It has definitely brought new life into the Power Plate and has encouraged people to look at Power Plate in a fresh, new way.

“Power Plate is a great piece of equipment, but we do find some members settle into doing the same exercise routines. “Power Plate Integrated Fitness has given us the tools we need to show members the versatility of the equipment and has encouraged more people to try Power Plate for the first time.” The centre uses Power Plate as part of its express classes and cross trainer classes, as well as integrating it with gym programmes and using it with members who have physical disabilities to help improve blood circulation. Michael added: “Our functional training area has been transformed since offering these new options and classes. “The functional mat means we can have one person on the Power Plate while another performs exercises on the mat during a class. So much more can be done now with these tools. Around-the-clock supervision is not required as people can successfully follow the workouts on the banners in their own time, without needing assistance.”

FUNCTIONAL TRAINING

For whom the bell tolls ... By Mark laws, Jordan Fitness THE Kettlebell is an old-school strength tool that has made a resurgence in recent years. So much so, there is no getting away from them... and for good reason. You can do standard weight training exercises with a Kettlebell, but to really take your training to another level then you should look to introduce more traditional ballistic exercises such as Swings, Cleans, Snatches and Jerks. Not only will you target each major muscle group, but you will also work so many different parts of your body in such a short space of time that your fat burning potential will be drastically increased. Kettlebell users can expect to develop a strong and lithe physique that is robust and as injury-proof as possible... so what are you waiting for? Well the first hurdle is deciding which kettlebell is most suitable for you. I am a kettlebell enthusiast, and in some ways I am a kettlebell traditionalist – I received my training from multiple time World Champion Valery Fedorenko in Cincinnati, however I am fully aware that many people use Kettlebells for a wide range of purposes. So which type of Kettlebell should you use? Cast Iron: These 'no frills' Kettlebells are made from solid cast iron and are inevitably the cheapest you will find. They do the same job as any other, however they are really well suited to outdoor boot camps, Kettlebell traditionalists or anyone who is happy with a low-cost yet effective product. Neoprene: Also made from solid cast iron except these Kettlebells are uniquely colour coded with a neoprene covering for easy weight identification. Not only will the neoprene casing protect the floor in your facility, but it will not scratch, tear or scuff like similar plastic covered Kettlebells. Ideal for mainstream gym chains with a large membership base. Chrome handled: Moving away from a solid iron handle, these

Kettlebells are covered in rubber with a smooth chrome handle, making them a lot more user friendly. Maybe not ideal for your hardcore Kettlebell lifters, but the Chrome handled Kettlebells are perfect for boutique studios, premium health clubs or anyone that finds the cast iron Kettlebells uncomfortable on their hand and/or wrist. Competition: These Kettlebells are suitable for even the most professional of lifters. They are made from steel with a hollow core and all weights are exactly the same size to meet strict competition standards. They have a smooth, comfortable handle and are colour coded for easy weight identification. Perfect for anyone preparing for Kettlebell Sport competitions. I must make it clear – any style of Kettlebell can be used by any person at any type of facility... but some styles may be more suitable than others. Kettlebells have a long and colourful past, we have established that there are many different styles of Kettlebell which have evolved in recent years, but what does the future hold for the modest Kettlebell? I struggle to shake off my traditionalist roots, so I would say..."if it ain't broke – don't fix it". Fads and trends will always come and go, but the Kettlebell has survived hundreds of years so far and I don't see any reason for that to change. It is great to have the different styles mentioned above as that allows anyone with any level of experience to benefit from this tool. The principles of the Kettlebell remain consistent, the different styles just allow for a wider audience to take part – same horse, different jockey. As fitness professionals we have a duty to enhance the ability of our clients to cope with the rigours of their daily lives. After 10 years I am yet to find anyone who would not find life a little bit easier after the introduction of Kettlebell training to their training routine.

Escape Fitness has introduced the first Competition Pro Kettlebell range to its portfolio of strength based products. The Competition Pro Kettlebell matches competition grade standards and is weighted at the bottom, ensuring it moves quickly around the hand, wrist and arm. The bells range from 8kg to 32kg in 4kg increments, meaning there are weight options suitable for most users.

Get exclusivity when you qualify as a KETTFusion instructor during 2015

Multi-functional tool offers endless exercise options THE RMT Club is a fun and challenging new multi-functional training tool offering endless exercise options for personal training sessions and small and large group training. Distributed exclusively in the UK by Physical Company these weighted clubs use the principles of Rotational Movement Training to improve power, range of movement, strength, coordination, balance and athletic movement. As well as being rotated, the club can be swung and slammed against hard surfaces – without causing any damage. The soft flexible head has an inter-

nal shifting weight made up of steel shot that provides dynamic resistance as well as ‘audible feedback’. The ability to hear the shifting steel is particularly beneficial when comparing movements on each side of the body and identifying weaknesses. The sound element also adds a dimension to controlled exercises which rely on the user keeping the sound as quiet as possible. Similarly, exercises relying on power require the user to make the sound explosive. Clubs range in weight from 1kg to 3.6kg. For more information visit www.physicalcompany.co.uk

THE first instructor training course of 2015 takes place later this month at Mellor Parish Centre, Mellor, near Stockport. Trust adopts eyeQ product KIRKLEES Active Leisure has streamlined its membership management by adopting Gladstone’s eyeQ business intelligence tool. As a Gladstone customer since 1997, the trust was already using a wide range of the company’s products across its 14 sites, including Plus2 for member management, the Gladstone Management Console ), Contact Manager, selfservice kiosks, Connect for online booking, Join@Home for online memberships and Learn2 for course management. Business improvement officer Ashleigh Grailey explained: “What appealed to us most about eyeQ was the opportunity it offered to create custom reports to fit the unique needs of our business, as well as the option to pull real-time information when required, thereby removing the delay in providing figures that could affect a business

decision.” For the operator, one of the most useful features of the product is the Query Builder, which allows them to select the fields they need and build reports that exactly reflect information requirements. Ashleigh added: “The biggest benefit so far has been the ability to closely monitor income using custom reports, saving on staff time. “In the past, when site managers came to submit their weekly income reports, they had to work through a list of information and pull it into a report format. Now, they simply have to open a spreadsheet and eyeQ will populate it with the information exactly as they require it. “The workbook option also enables us to dig deeper into this data and find specific customer records that we need to investigate.”

Edinburgh Leisure was an early adopter of the MobilePro app from Gladstone.

App helps operator offer its members booking flexibility THE introduction of a smart phone app is helping Edinburgh Leisure keep up with competitors and offer members more flexibility when it comes to booking their sessions. The operator has become an early adopter of the MobilePro app from Gladstone, giving customers the option to gain website access and book fitness classes using their mobile phones. Edinburgh Leisure’s ICT manager Stuart Fairbairn said: “Our customers have been asking us for a while now if they can access our website and book fitness classes on their smart phones, and we knew that if we wanted to stay competitive, it was vital for us to offer this kind of flexibility. “In January and February, we softlaunched MobilePro in 15 out of our 30 sites, and started to actively promote it on March 3 via our website and Facebook page. The results have

been incredible. During the softlaunch period we had 1,000 downloads; just over two weeks after the official launch those numbers had already topped 3,500, and they’re now at nearly 12,000. “To date, 85 per cent of module downloads have been for booking classes, with just over a quarter of all fitness class bookings being made via the app. “Feedback from customers has been terrific. They love being able to book and cancel classes on the go, even when the sites are closed, and they also like how easy it is to access information about how many spaces are left in a class or where they are on a waiting list.” Edinburgh Leisure is now looking at how to incorporate bookings for activities outside the gym or fitness studio – such as golf, tennis, badminton and squash – into the app.

Portal connects members’ data PULSE has launched a web based platform which connects members’ personal fitness data inside and outside the gym environment. Accessed via a web browser on smart phone, tablet or desktop; members can gain a personalised training experience at their fingertips. Utilising the familiar SmartCard when in the gym, members now have the added benefit to view, access, track and update their fitness everywhere by logging into an online portal. There they can view a full picture of their fitness progress, plus features

such as workout plans, personalised training information and the ability to record activity completed outside of the gym. Director of operations at Pulse Michael Rice said: “We live in a connected world and the introduction of a web based solution seemed the next generation for our popular gym management software – SmartCentre. “Sharing key personal fitness information that is accessible 24/7 will motivate members to stay active and reach their goals, consequently improving member loyalty and ultimately retention.”

Refer-all wins second Wandsworth tender By Christina Eccles REFER-all, which specialises in software solutions to enhance the efficiency of exercise referrals from GPs to leisure providers, has won a second tender with Wandsworth Council. In 2012, Footsteps for Health in Wandsworth tasked Refer-all with creating a software hub to assist with the running of their service. This umbrella service commissions lifestyle services for patients via GPs using a single form to refer their patients to a central hub. The aim was to improve the services for everyone involved and, looking to the future, the council was keen to move away from paper referral towards electronic referral. Now with the Exercise on Referral and specialist activity services under the jurisdiction of

Wandsworth Council, the authority made the decision to phase out paper based exercise referrals for these services, with Refer-all again winning the tender. Health living project officer – Footsteps Matt Robinson said: “Refer-all helps with the management of referrals, with tracking and also strategically, as we can see how the different services fit into the whole scheme, the whole patient intervention. “It is also really helpful for the lifestyle services to see how the patients use a wide range of services. When I am asked to report on referral ‘traffic’, I can see the targets for each service and have the capability to track these. “This creates a targeted approach in terms of intervention and good demographic information that we can act on.”

Polar integrates Technogym in products TECHNOLOGY specialist Polar has teamed up with Technogym to integrate the supplier’s platforms into its products. Thanks to the Technogym Ecosystem and the new mywellness cloud open platform, Technogym mywellness app users can now experience connectivity between Technogym equipment and a full

range of Polar products. This includes every Polar device that stores data on the Polar Flow web service or the Polar Personal Trainer. All data captured with the Polar H7 heart rate sensor and the newest system for group classes, called Polar Flow for Club, also benefits from the same connectivity.

New online booking tool helps industry maximise drive INDEPENDENT clubs and trainers have been given a helping hand to maximise their customers’ healthy New Year’s resolutions, thanks to the launch of a new online tool. Click Hello has been designed to help small businesses in the health and fitness sector by allowing bookings to be taken instantly online, at any time. Users can embed an easy to manage widget onto their website and Facebook page to provide even wider reach and businesses can also incentivise customers when they book by offering them something at the online checkout in return for sharing with their friends. This means one booking at a time can potentially create many more. Founder Calum Brannan said: “New Year’s resolutions tend to be impulsive at the start and fuelled by an overindulgent Christmas or one too many drinks at that party. “When it comes to health and fitness resolutions, we recognised that if smaller businesses could capture interest and bookings during this impulsive moment, they were far more likely to generate sales and custom as a result. Click Hello helps

Calum Brannan smaller operations in the health and fitness industry to offer immediate and 24/7 access to their services, to take bookings and receive payments whenever the customer wants. “We’ve designed Click Hello to deliver a flexible and cost effective solution for any small business that wants to maximise its bookings and make the most of the influence that social media sharing can play in boosting business. It’s an ideal solution as we enter a peak period for the health and fitness sector.”

Have you got everything you need in one place? THERE is never enough time it seems to get everything done in one day. Well, that’s how it felt in my gym years ago which is what lead me to create ClubManager. Each day seemed to start with a couple of items that did not get done from the previous day’s to do list, meaning I had a longer list every day. I then worked out that much of the reason for my never ending list of tasks was due to fact that each job on the list took ages to get done. Why was that? The reason was worryingly simple. All the jobs I needed to do were in different places, which took up more time. Then of course I would create another spreadsheet to solve the process that did not work with the previous spreadsheet and every time I did this things just got more complicated. It was this frustration that led me to create ClubManager. I needed a tool where all my solutions were accessible in one place, things like: Automated direct debit reconciliation so I knew who had not paid. Member attendance records. Retention tools so I can keep customers paying for longer. Key Performance indicators viewable at a glance every day. Online Class bookings. Epos.

Club Manager founder Wayne Heath. Daily accounts and management reports. The list goes on. ClubManager has given the time back to gym owners around the world to grow their business, and their daily task list is a breeze now. ClubManager can answer all of these questions and a whole lot more for you in 2015 and we are looking forward to having a chat with you soon. Fitness First Middle East has more than 60,000 members in 38 clubs.

Fitness First Middle East incorporates MYZONE system By Christina Eccles FITNESS First Middle East has incorporated MYZONE technology into every new membership in the group as part of its retention strategy. A franchise owned and operated under licence by Landmark Group, Fitness First Middle East has more than 60,000 members in 38 clubs across the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Kuwait. It was the first health and fitness chain to introduce MYZONE to the Middle East in early 2013. And since then, the technology has become firmly embedded in the organisation with more than 13,990 members now using it. Chief operating officer of Fitness First Middle East and North Africa George Flooks said: “MYZONE has added a whole new dimension to our business. “We are focused on innovation and saw MYZONE as a great opportunity to once again be the market leader in offering our members the latest innovation to transform their progress,

and most importantly, results. “We have incorporated MYZONE into every new membership as we see MYZONE as an integral part of our members’ journey and the significant role MYZONE plays in our retention strategy.” The belt has also become part of the Fitness First uniform with staff expected to use it at least eight times a month. All staff are issued belts at cost price, or receive one for free if they sell six belts. Freelance instructors are given a free belt and must wear it while they are teaching. George added: “As a business, it has given us the added benefit that we can monitor and encourage all of our staff to train using the belts and all data is captured and stored online through the website and the staff challenges we run. “It’s imperative that you set the example from the top. Personally, I have achieved more than 30,000 MEPs in 2014 so far, averaging 17 workouts a month.”

Health Club of the Year: The Laboratory Spa and Health Club, Muswell Hill

Best Hotel Facility: Rookery Hall Hotel Health Club and Spa

Judge’s Comments:

Judge’s Comments:

“The Laboratory's member newsletter is particularly impressive and no doubt a significant contributor to their admirable retention figures as it will lead to increased member engagement. “Whilst the winner benefits from a lovely

location and plentiful car parking, these alone will not guarantee success, more notable is the fact that after winning this award in 2012 the owners then invested half a million pounds in the wet facilities. “I detect core values that are on point and will assure longevity.”

“This fitness centre is at the higher end of a budget gym price but with all facilities offered it could be comparable to a higher end leisure centre.

Judge’s Comments: “It caters for every individual and goal with high tech CV equipment, 53 different classes, great facilities for keen cross fitters and even a sauna and a cafe for members who are eager to relax after a workout.”

Best Rehabilitation Facility: Westway Trust Sports and Fitness Judge’s Comments: “Westway has taken client care to another level. I was particularly impressed with the feedback system they operate such as weekly phone calls which allows the client to confide in their instructor far easier than in an open environment. “The fact the centre is disabled friendly is very important and especially in the realm

add-on after-thought to generate revenue from some spare space, is admirable. “From the resources and answers submitted you detect a feeling of passion and professionalism, a marriage that no doubt explains their good performance as a business.”

Ladies Only Gym of the Year: Pink Ladies Health and Fitness

Budget Gym of the Year: Lifestyle Fitness Barnsley Judge’s Comments:

“Commitment to investment for continued upgrading of the facilities and brand promotion is very impressive with a detailed plan of how this will be managed. “The facilities are super and the integration with the hotel, rather than simply being an

of rehabilitation. The fact they also offer braille for the blind shows they have not left a stone unturned. “Westway is extremely well organised and not content to just exist. They constantly evaluate their service and how they can improve it. Staff appear genuinely interested in what they do which can result only in one thing… success!”

“Pink Ladies have developed a really strong business offering; quality fitness training, combined with complimentary services for ladies to come train hard and then relax. “The GP referral links they have established, combined with weekly health medical checks offer an essential, life changing serv-

ice which stood out in the applications. “Owner Cathy's attention to detail and support for her members is clearly exceptional, with three members choosing her to be Godmother to their newborns. A thriving, knowledgeable, growing business providing a safe, effective and happy place for ladies to train.”

Combat Zone Gym of the Year: Fight Factory @ Bodymatters gym Judge’s Comments: “Exceptional combat facilities that cater for all types of combat sports. “They support all fighters with in depth nutritional support and guidance to make sure all members are fully ready for their

upcoming fights. “The club oozes passion and dedication along with offering members a wide range of healthy foods to purchase. With the extensive facilities they offer, their entry stood out from the very tough competition.”

Strength Training Gym of the Year: Ripped Gym Harlow Judge’s Comments: “The equipment is top notch with a fantastic maintenance/cleaning program that ensures no equipment down time, which can be so annoying to clients. “There is a wealth of experience on hand within their staff and most of them have a very high standing in the strength training

and bodybuilding world. The standard of clientele they attract also speaks volumes. “This gym is going from strength to strength and able to expand in the current financial climate and that is down to its reputation. I personally feel it’s the obvious number one option of venue to train at out of the candidates I was given.”

Group Exercise Gym of the Year: Ribby Hall Village Health Club Judge’s Comments: “Commitment to regularly freshening the timetable by visiting industry events to stay abreast of new trends in the sector are vital and these guys recognise that. “Member of the month/year shows a com-

mitment to engaging with the customers and driving results, both critical components of good service. “Clearly they have a strong instructor team and a sense of pride permeates from the submission.”

Member Achievement: Bailey Sarwa, Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre Judge’s Comments: “Such a strong category where anyone of the finalists could have won, yet Bailey showed a depth of courage on a level with the adult nominations. “Overcoming any serious illness once, requires true strength, yet to overcome a

complicated cancer twice, before he has left school shows real determination. “Bailey and his trainer Tom, have clearly worked together to increase his confidence, strength and well being, allowing him to progress in life, cancer free. I am quite sure he will go on to do great things.”

Functional Training Gym of the Year: FSI Gym Judge’s Comments: “The facilities at FSI make this a stand out for Functional Training Gym of the Year, with their high end variety of equipment they attract a vast amount of professional athletes.

“They offer an outstanding list of equipment including prowlers, 11 tyres, Olympic lifting platforms, 100kg chains, sledge hammers, battle rope, sled dogs, 2,000 sqft artificial turf. This list goes on. It’s one phenomenal gym!”

Newcomer of the Year: Fitness Garage Judge’s Comments: “A really competitive category with some outstanding applications in terms of quality and range of services, products and clothing, depth of knowledge, expertise, support for vulnerable people, team spirit and fundraising.

“Fitness Garage showed all this, combined with such a strong branding, online identity, community involvement and progressive, robust business plans. “Fitness Garage and all the finalists show anything is possible, with customer care and quality of service.”

Community Involvement: CKI School of Martial Arts Judge’s Comments: “The winner stood out from the rest in the fact it is a totally different enterprise than the others; run on a purely non-profit basis and exists solely as an asset to the community. “The owner is a very special man, very

friendly and approachable and gives his time freely to everyone. “I think the clearest reason I can give for my decision is not just the fact you can see the hard work that not only the owner puts in, but the passion his instructors show for what they do, as many are volunteers. You must love the game to do it for free!”

Gym Team of the Year: St Peter’s Leisure Centre Judge’s Comments: “St Peter’s has a high quality fitness suite with top of the range equipment, but the real magic of the centre quite clearly comes from the staff. “You get that feeling that every member of

Customer Service Award: Club Kingswood staff really loves the job they do, and that’s why they do it with a smile on their faces. “The team are the biggest asset to St Peter’s, and it is only right that they should receive this award in recognition of what they do.”

Gym Based Personal Trainer of the Year: Michael Warren, FSI Gym Judge’s Comments: “Michael's comprehensive depth of knowledge, combined with his results based client stories and recommendations were outstanding. “He clearly understands the growth and future trends within the fitness industry, offering qualified nutrition and mental

training. Combined with his credits as a trainer, he has established his own gym,TV channel and regularly contributes to magazines. “In a tough category, filled with a depth of talented, experienced, professional trainers, we felt Michael just edged ahead, and deserved to win.”

Regional Gym of the Year Scotland: Aberdeen Sports Village Judge’s Comments: “What impressed me most about Aberdeen Sports Village is how they have grown and maintained their standards. “There is a very powerful message here

with this site that says we can develop communities: communities that draw from all the diversities of the outside world. “Aberdeen Sports Village acts as a beacon for everyone who wants to be active.”

Judge’s Comments: “The variety of services offered are phenomenal. “They cater for every age and have a high level of members who have been attending for over 20 to 30 years, which highlights the

exceptional service they offer. “All feedback from members was extremely positive and the club have put a lot of thought into finer details that they offer to each member including a personal progress pack.”

Local Authority/Leisure Trust Gym of the Year: Active Life Judge’s Comments: “I was particularly impressed by the winner’s commitment to new members, their detailed induction journey driving staffmember interaction and so helping to create relationships and increase the likelihood of members achieving their results.

“The introduction of a separate Gentle Gym membership including motorised equipment displays an understanding of and commitment to satisfy the needs of the community, which is a must in a Local Authority facility, yet sometimes overlooked as venues simply try to keep up with the private sector.”

Regional Gym of the Year North: Ribby Hall Village Health Club Judge’s Comments: “Ribby Hall seems to embrace wide and varied facilities, which is matched with the wide and varied members. “This entry has a future feel about it – family, variety and accommodating. The book-

ing system for classes and mixing members with people on holiday also reflects good management and organisational skills. “The family type business exudes warmth and the staff retention figures support a strong philosophy.”

Regional Gym of the Year Midlands and Wales: The Warehouse Gym Judge’s Comments: “This entry oozed warmth and a genuine feeling for all its members. The off the wall approach is not just innovative, but colourful, bold, brave and universal; what a brilliant and exciting product. “But, it’s not just the innovation – it is all about the members.Warehouse has found

a niche – a niche to satisfy a segment of the public and provide an alternative to the status quo. “This is a winner because it dares to be different. Entries like The Warehouse give us a kick up the backside which says get out more and look for something different – let’s be amazing – The Warehouse is.”

Regional Gym of the Year South: Winners 2000 Fitness Judge’s Comments: “The submission is once again first class. “My reason for selecting Winners 2000 is the attention to detail. There is a great emphasis on both customer care and the

part staff play in making this happen. “The organisational structure reflects a strong leadership with clear guidelines, which to me is the secret of Winners 2000 success. ”

Special Recognition Award: Posthumously awarded to Elvis Meade, Ripped Gym Judge’s Comments:

National Gym of the Year: Winners 2000 Fitness Judge’s Comments: “Winners 2000 demonstrates that a small business can organise like a big business on the structural side, and deliver the philosophy like the small business. “It is also an example of how we should be

running our gyms – professional – efficient and businesslike – not forgetting that people want both structure and care. “Big club attitude on organisation – little club attitude on culture – this is a formula for success. Big clubs take note.”

“An extremely popular industry figure, Elvis dedicated his life to helping others. “From the age of 20 when he worked at his local youth centre in the gym in Hackney through to building and owning one of the most successful bodybuilding gyms in the UK – Ripped Gym – with wife Michelle, Elvis was someone others looked up to and greatly admired. “We welcomed him, Michelle and their gym

team to the NFAs last December and it came as a great shock to everyone when he sadly passed away in January after a short illness. Following the news, tributes poured in – a true testament to the many lives he touched. “Described by Michelle as her life, best friend and soulmate, Elvis’ legacy lives on in the club they built together, as well as in the new Ripped Gym in Basildon which opened in March in his memory.”

Congratulations to our runners up ...

Lifetime Achievement Award: Ismail Saleh, founder of CKI School of Martial Arts Judge’s Comments: “The recipient of this award runs a club attended by over 950 people every week and for well over two decades has provided a place for the local community to take part in a variety of combat focused fitness classes. “Many of his students have gone on to win

regional, national and international medals, making them one of the most successful martial arts clubs in the country. “Over the years, it has picked up many accolades for community involvement and the credit for much of its long standing success has to go to Ismail, who has put his heart and soul into making the club he founded the inspirational place it is today.”

The standard of finalists was so high this year that for the first time, we also awarded certificates to our second place runners up. SUPPLEMENTATION AND NUTRITION

Diets to avoid revealed THE British Dietetic Association has unveiled its annual list of celebrity diets to avoid in the new year, with the Urine Therapy Diet taking the top slot. Urine Therapy, or urotherapy, involves the drinking of urine for cosmetic or medical/wellbeing purposes. It is followed on the list by the Paleo Diet at number two, the Sugar Free Diet at number three, the VB6 (vegan before 6pm) Diet at number four and the Clay Cleanse Diet in fifth place. BDA spokesman and consultant dietitian Sian Porter said: “Every year in the BDA press office, we get call after call about all sorts of diets, from the weird and faddy right through to the downright dangerous, such as the

Breatharian Diet that calls on people to live on fresh air and sunlight alone. 2014 has been no exception. “It seems that as a nation we are constantly on the search for that magic bullet approach to losing weight, wanting a quick fix to give us the bodies we so often see on TV, in glossy magazines and adorning billboards up and down the UK. “When wanting to lose some weight, don’t think about ‘going on a diet’ or just what changes you need to make over a month or two to lose the weight, think about what changes you need to make forever to lose that weight and, as importantly, keep it off.”

The club includes a dedicated Fuel Bar, offering over 20 protein filled shakes including YogiBerry, Peanut Butter and Jelly and Mocha, which are going down well with fitness fans. The bar also offers a social setting for

When you're taking part in High Intensity Interval training, like we do here, it is extremely important to support the body and help it rebuild lean, strong muscles.”

Tropicana Wholesale launches Mutant – All in ‘ONE’ product

Total Warrior – engage your members and challenge your clients TOTAL Warrior – the pinnacle of obstacle racing – is adding a third event to its schedule this year as it heads to Scotland for the first time to meet rising demand for its gruelling challenges. Total Warrior events are a fantastic way to engage gym members in a team challenge that promises gasps, grimaces, and laughs in equal measure. Total Warrior is at the forefront of the UK’s Obstacle Course Racing movement, thought to be the fastest growing sport in the world by participant numbers. Total Warrior has 30 punishing obstacles crammed into its 10km – 10-mile courses, which are set in the finest venues the UK has to offer. Warriors accepting the challenge should prepare to be tested, soaked, and muddied to their absolute limits. TW’s existing events in Leeds and the Lake District last year attracted more than 12,500 entrants – including hundreds of gym owners, instructors

and PTs – seeking the ultimate test of stamina, strength and determination. And this year you and your clients can experience a Total Warrior event through an exclusive offer for WorkOut readers (see reverse of TW poster inserted in this edition of WorkOut). Ben Jones, a director and PT at BSmart Fitness in Keswick, said: “Total Warrior is a fixture in our gym calendar now – preparing for and participating in their events are a fantastic way to keep members motivated over several months of training for a challenge that we can all then enjoy and endure together. “Everyone gets a real buzz from the whole event experience and it has definitely helped create long-lasting bonds between me and my customers.” Sign up, recruit your gym members and get training! THE all-in-one category has always been a strong performer in the UK. Hardcore lifters who have been around the block a few times know only too well which ingredients are “must haves” for maximum performance, recovery and lean muscle gains and they know that if they can get all of the most effective ingredients, at the optimum dosages, in one product, they can cover all of their supplement “bases” by just drinking one or two shakes most days of the week. One company who always create among the most effective formulations and always respond to customers’ needs is Mutant and this month sees the introduction of their all-new, All-in-One product called One. This product is designed to deliver every key nutrient and supplement ingredient that hard-training bodybuilders and athletes need for Mutant-sized, freakish gains in lean muscle tissue. With Tropicana Wholesale being the

official distributor for Mutant, they’ll be the first to lay their hands on this exciting new product. Throughout January and February, Tropicana Wholesale will be offering 20 per cent off the normal price of Mutant ONE. If you don’t already have a trade account with Tropicana Wholesale, call 0121 313 6738 to speak one of the team.

World champion boxer Carl Froch made a star appearance at a charity event, organised by NRGFUEL Sports Nutrition, who have sponsored him during his professional career. Director Valerie Brown said: “I could feel the excitement and anticipation as I arrived at my NRGFUEL Sports Nutrition HQ in Arnold, Nottingham. The reason being Nottingham's own four times World Champion Super Middleweight boxer Carl 'The Cobra' Froch was on his way. He was more than happy to help raise money for the Nottingham City Hospital Children's Ward by signing t-shirts, boxing gloves etc. There was a fantastic turn out. Gym owners from across the country and locals turned up to meet their boxing idol, he certainly has the total package. We raised over £1,000 on the day, plus £2,500 from a previous event. Hopefully this will be of great use to the ward.”
