National Fitness Awards to be Jet powered WORKOUT is delighted to announce that Diane Youdale will be the guest host of this year’s National Fitness Awards. Diane is remembered by millions as ‘Jet’ from TV show Gladiators. Fan favourite Diane starred on TV’s biggest show of the era for five years and became one of the best known faces in the UK. “It was an incredible time,” she said. “The show grew into something so massive it was hard to comprehend. “We filmed at Birmingham’s National Indoor Arena twice a day to audiences of 8,000 each time. I don’t think you could

make a TV show like it now. “We had our own action figures, we were on the front of Kellogg’s cereal boxes, there was a monthly magazine dedicated to us and the merchandising was never ending. “We also got our fair share of newspaper attention and I think it was a good thing that all this happened presocial media or it probably would have been too much.” The impact of the show lasts into the present day with people queuing around the block to meet the stars and conventions and countless men and women citing Gladiators as their inspiration for getting into sports and fitness. But there was always more to Diane than her famous Gladiator alter-ego. A GB gymnast in her young teens, she also played flute in the National Youth Orchestra, was a member of the National Youth Theatre (alongside Bond-to-be Daniel Craig and Elizabeth Hurley) and as a prodigiously talented dancer she graduated from a top London academy. But it was Gladiators that launched her into the public consciousness. When injury brought an end to her Gladiator life after five seasons, doors opened to plenty of radio and TV presenting roles, but in more recent times Diane has not only continued to work as an in-demand fitness and dance professional but also a practicing psychotherapist and lecturer. Event organiser Dominic Musgrave said: “We’re delighted that someone of the calibre of Diane has agreed to be our guest presenter at the National Fitness

He is Jon Keating, a director and vice chair at Active Tameside, one of the 12 leisure and community organisations that make up GM Active, a not-forprofit community impact company whose members manage the majority of the publicly owned leisure and physical activity assets and services on behalf of Greater Manchester’s 10 local authorities. Jon replaces Chris Turner, who has taken up a role with Brio Leisure, which runs leisure, fitness and entertainment facilities in Cheshire and the Wirral. He said: “When I came to Greater Manchester, it was only ever meant to be for the summer to watch the Commonwealth Games. “Two decades later, and with lots of career, voluntary and personal life experiences behind me, I’m excited by the opportunity to bring the GM Active Publishing manager: Dominic Musgrave Tel: 01226 734407 dm@scriptmedia.co.uk Studio manager: Paul Hopkinson ph@scriptmedia.co.uk

An opportunity to reduce health and wellbeing inequalities, and support and encourage active lives.” Jon, who holds a BSc in Sports and Exercise Science, began his career as swimming development officer at Stockport Sports Trust (now Life Leisure). He later became regional development director with the Swimming Teachers Association before joining the Amateur Swimming Association as school swimming advisor. Whilst at the ASA, Jon moved on to become aquatic officer and then programme manager for club development before becoming club development director at Swim England. He joins GM Active at a key time following the launch of a new strategy, ‘We Move as One’, to encourage active lives, reduce health inequalities and support those who need help the most in the Greater Manchester city-region as it recovers from the pandemic.

ukactive and Sport England announce partnership to drive sector progress ukactive and Sport England have committed to a systems partnership for the next five years, spanning seven strategic areas to support the sector’s growth and reduce inequalities in physical activity. The partnership means that ukactive and Sport England will continue to collaborate across the following areas in order to better support ukactive’s members to develop and grow: n Campaigns. n Children, young people and families. n Digital transformation. n Health and wellbeing. n Inclusion. n Infrastructure. n Quality standards. Huw Edwards, CEO of ukactive, said: “The role of ukactive’s members in reducing the inequalities we see across the UK must not be underestimated and we are determined to do everything we can to support the sector’s development over the coming years to achieve our ambitions for growth. “We are delighted to have the continued support of Sport England and this systems partnership will be vital for the sector to accelerate its progress towards creating a more equal society where everyone has the

Huw Edwards, CEO of ukactive. opportunity to be physically active.” ukactive’s shared ambition for growth shows the potential for the sector to reach more than five million new members by 2030, by working in partnership with the Government and its agencies to drive change. The continued support from Sport England includes £5.25m funding from the Government and the National Lottery over the next five years, meaning ukactive can provide forensic focus on the priority areas above – supporting members to develop their services and leading the sector into the future with the most

inclusive and accessible facilities. Recent examples of ukactive’s work in partnership with Sport England include: n The Decade of Change paper on the evolution of facilities and infrastructure. n The landmark report on the sector’s digital maturity and effectiveness. n The This Girl Can guide for gyms to improve services for women and girls. n The launch of the Everyone Can agenda for disability inclusion and accessibility. Through work such as this, ukactive members are supported to develop their facilities, services and workforce to ensure the sector can improve its reach, particularly among underrepresented groups. The new agreement forms part of Sport England’s wider systems partnership work, which will see more than 120 organisations across the sector working with Sport England to level-up access to sport and physical activity across the country. The organisations will receive support, expertise, and an investment to co-deliver the ambitions within its 10-year Uniting the Movement strategy. More than £550million is being

invested in total, under a new funding model from Sport England that provides longer-term financial security as organisations recover and reinvent from the COVID-19 pandemic. All partner organisations were selected by Sport England due to their ability to influence change and improvement at the heart of the system they are a part of. Tim Hollingsworth, CEO of Sport England, added: “Sport England’s goal is to get everyone active – no matter who they are, where they live, or what their background is. “But we know that certain groups – like women, people with long-term health conditions, disabled people, people from ethnically diverse communities and lower socioeconomic groups – are more likely to be inactive. “We can only innovate and tackle inequalities effectively by thinking about long-term change; Uniting the Movement is a long-term vision, and our funding approach needs to reflect that. “Changes to our funding model will help us achieve our goal, by making it easier for our partners to do what they need to do to level-up and deliver.”

CHALLENGE WORKOUT

A new class which combines boxing and fitness has been launched LiveWire’s health and wellbeing site, Orford Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub. Dominic Musgrave was one of the first people to give it a try.

LiveWire launches FITBOX, an exciting and exclusive new fitness concept FITBOX, a dynamic boutiquestyle boxing and functional fitness experience has exclusively launched at the Warrington facility. The purpose-built space was officially launched at a VIP event recently and is now open to members. The workout sessions feature 12 rounds of exercises, alternating between functional moves and bag work over a 45-minute period with no previous experience required from the user. Kev Forester, commercial director for LiveWire, said: “We’re really excited to launch this new fitness offer to our members. “We were keen to offer a new workout experience to our customers to help invigorate their training routines. “Boxing is a great way to burn calories, improve fitness, improve body shape, and to relieve stress but we know that many people would not feel comfortable stepping into a more traditional boxing gym. “With this concept we wanted to ensure we created an offer that is open to all, bringing the benefits of such training into a non-intimating

Having not put on a pair of boxing gloves for a class for many years, I must admit that I was a little bit apprehensive about attending Fitbox class at first, but I needn’t have been. The class I attended attracted a mixture of men and women of all ages, and instructor Mike Bannister soon put us at ease with his jovial welcome. Mike’s instructions for each rep were clear and concise, and he was walking around throughout to offer advice on technique to both myself, particularly when it came to the boxing, and other members of the class. The session itself begun with a thorough warm-up before he then explained to us how the class would work. We worked at six different stations, doing two minutes of a combination of two functional exercises (squats, lunges, push ups, plank) using a variety of dumbbells, weights, ropes and power bags, as well as the

and inclusive environment with the emphasis more being on getting a good workout, as opposed to the more technical boxing elements.” “We look forward to welcoming our members to this new space and hope they are as excited as we are about this new addition to our programme.” Equipment featured in the newly created space includes: ‘killer’ Air Bikes. We then swapped with our partner, donned a pair of boxing gloves in the minute’s rest and did two minutes with the punchbags using different combinations that Mike demonstrated to us. After the four minutes we then moved to the next station – nightclub style lighting and the pumping music made for a great atmosphere to work out in. The class flew by and I can’t remember sweating as much in a long time. I’m sure once you’ve attended a few sessions you will soon get to grips with the boxing technique, but for a first attempt I must admit that I loved every minute and only wish that I lived closer so I could attend regularly. The session finished with a thorough warm down and I was fully awake and set to tackle the rest of the day.

The space being used for the sessions was previously a function room before undergoing a dramatic transformation that has created a state-of-the-art fitness space for its users. The customer-offer includes a mix of sessions, which are open to all, as well as dedicated sessions for under 16s, families and women-only sessions. In addition, specific sessions are planned to engage with typically hard-to-reach communities in order to have a positive impact on reducing anti-social behaviour in the immediate area. FITBOX sessions will be included for all-inclusive members at no additional charge. Members are able to utilise the space for their own workouts when the studio is not in use for organised sessions. Non-members will able to access this space on a pay-as-you-go basis. A focal point of the studio is a large hand-painted mural on one wall, created by a Warrington artist, Sarah Harris, who collaborated with young people taking part in LiveWire’s holiday activities scheme.

The benefits of wild sea swimming By Louie Fecou

ALTHOUGH it has been an activity for many enthusiasts for more years than you would imagine, it seems that wild sea swimming has become a bit of a trending activity over the last two years. Perhaps a desire to swim during lockdown has made this particular fitness pursuit more attractive, but it seems that more and more clubs, formal and informal, have sprung up nationally, encouraging folks to take the plunge. In Scotland, there has been a noticeable increase, surprising due to a particularly fierce Winter, but we spoke with a group in North Ayrshire, along the West coast of Scotland, that explained the nature of the experience. Lorraine has been swimming in the sea for a while now, so of course the first question is always “Why?” “When you first enter the sea, there is often an overwhelming sensation, that is probably like nothing else you have experienced. The sheer shock of the cold water is often coupled with a feeling of exhilaration, and oddly enough, that feeling occurs almost every time you take part.” Lorraine has an informal group of friends that regularly take the plunge in various Ayrshire venues, an area of Scotland blessed with plenty of beautiful beaches. However, Lorraine was keen to point out the benefits of a structured and

researched meeting, as opposed to running screaming into the sea without resolve. “You have to be sure that people are safe and prepared,” she states “The water can catch you off guard and you have to let people know that this is not a risk free activity.” As in any fitness activity, people have different ability levels, so having someone in the group that is aware of the pitfalls, is as important as having a qualified teacher at you group exercise session. Elements such as the time spent in the water, the nature of the body of water you are in and the individual needs of the swimmer are all considerations that should be followed. Simply running into the sea

can present problems, and throwing yourself headfirst into the ocean can be more dangerous than you think. A look at the RNLI website provides swimmers with some great advice that can make this activity safe and effective. They explain the need to know where you can enter and exit the water, awareness of hazards such as rocky water beds, and the time of the tides. Knowing about rip currents is also important, especially what to do if you find yourself in one. Equipment wise, RNLI suggest wet suits and brightly coloured swim caps, helping you to stay noticed, and tow floats will help with buoyancy if needed. A phone in a watertight pouch, and a whistle are also encouraged,

and there is also an app you can download, RYA Safe Trx, that can track your swim and send an alert if you fail to return on time. A safety section on the site also warns of the dangers of dipping into water below 15 degrees. Water shock is very real, and you should know what to do in the event this happens. On the plus side, there are many benefits for wild sea adventures. Everything from stress management, helping with improving strength and endurance, increasing cardio and perhaps one of the exclusive benefits is the aid in muscle recovery, the equivalent of taking a ice bath after a workout. Advice from Lorraine is to start easy, and if possible always go with a friend or a group that has someone with experience in the activity. “We are lucky enough to have a doctor that attends our group swims, and has been great in providing us with invaluable medical information about our swims. “There is always safety in numbers, and we advise to always go with a group, and to enjoy the experience,” There is plenty of information online about wild sea swimming, and it’s something that gyms and clubs can offer to clients to help build community. n Louie Fecou is the owner of a facility in Scotland that specialises in group exercise. He has more than 30 years’ experience in the industry.

Falls prevention programme proving popular and beneficial at Barrow Park Leisure Centre EXERCISE classes to improve the strength and stability of elderly participants are proving both popular and beneficial. Barrow Park Leisure Centre instructor Nicola Molloy is running the Age UK ‘Stay Strong Stay Steady’ falls prevention classes three times a week in 10-week blocks – and such is their success that some of those taking part have gone on to join the centre’s Young@Heart and Zumba Gold classes. Nicola said: “We meet every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon for an hour and then I give all the participants exercises to take home to work on until we meet again. “The programme we are delivering was originally designed to be done at home, but the group aspect of the classes are proving really popular and successful - it is providing a social aspect with some of those involved staying for a coffee and a chat after class.” One of those taking part, 69-yearold Mike, said the classes have made a huge difference to his strength and stability, enabling him to visit the leisure centre and use the swimming pool. He added: “The classes with Nicola and Age UK have helped me no end. I feel fitter, stronger, and more confident on my feet.” Nicola has teamed up with Age UK’s Barrow activities co-ordinator

Lorna Simpson to deliver the programme, with Lorna identifying and encouraging participants to join the classes at the centre. When Chris Hall, who in the past has run his own gym and has worked for some of the major chains, became manager of the Spirit Health Club at the Holiday Inn Central Milton Keynes last July he had no staff and no members. Fast forward to today and the gym is now thriving with approximately 200 members and four staff. Chris said: “Getting the club up and running again after it had been closed for 18 months due to the pandemic was a massive challenge. “We didn’t do a complete rebrand but rather invigorated the current one and I was lucky that one of the first members of the team that I appointed had experience in graphic design so we were able to showcase what we do and put some energy in to the site using fresh new imagery and fonts. “What we have done here has proved so successful that we’re now looking at doing something similar across the portfolio.” The size of the task for Chris was massive when he took over as members had either had their memberships frozen or heir money

returned, while staff had either been let go or furloughed. The building itself required a lot of work, with Chris having to spend more than £30,000 on the swimming pool alone. This now boasts an upgraded steam room complete with a new kettle system and essence infuser, while he is also looking into installing a sauna in the future. The gym also had an upgrade and a considerable amount of time has been spent improving the club’s presence on various social media channels to spread the word further. Chris added: “It’s amazing to think that last July we had no team in place and no members. Since then we’ve had to build a club from pretty much zero at a time when sadly many other gyms and businesses have struggled or have sadly had to close due to Covid “We’re now looking into adding aqua classes and aqua Zumba to our timetable. The swim schools have returned, which is great news, and we’ve also now got a beauty therapist in place. “We’re delighted to have just under 200 members currently. My initial target was 350 and I hope that by the mid part of next year we will be up around the 500 mark.”

Milton Keynes health club’s thriving again thanks to stalwart

some seated, some standing – that concentrate on improving balance, strength and confidence. Lorna added: “The partnership with Nicola and Barrow Park Leisure Centre has been a great success, delivering three OTAGO sessions a week for 60 of our most vulnerable clients in the Furness area.

“Furthermore, the improvement I have witnessed in client mobility, confidence and social skills has been amazing.” Evidence compiled by Age UK shows that improving the strength and balance of older people can reduce the risk of falls by as much as 55 per cent. It also states that if all over 65s followed a tailored exercise programme, it would prevent 7,000 unnecessary deaths a year – that’s 19 a day – from hip fractures alone. Another participant, 80-yearold Anne, who has just joined the classes, said: “I have been going on a Tuesday and Thursday for four weeks now and I feel it has helped me with walking and balancing. “Nicola the instructor is excellent, and I would love to join other activities when the course finishes.” Aidan Murphy, operations manager at Barrow Forward Limited, which manages the Barrow Park Leisure Centre, said: “This is a fantastic example of how our centre embraces the whole of our community. We are here for everyone, regardless of their age and ability. “The work being done by Nicola and Lorna, and the results they are achieving, is very impressive indeed. It’s great to see some of those taking part in the programme go on to join our other classes designed for our young at heart members.”

Gym marks ninth birthday and reveals major expansion plans for the future A WISHAW gym that recently celebrated its ninth anniversary has revealed big plans for the future. Smokin Guns Fitness marked the anniversary with a party for staff, members and their families. A second gym is set to open at a shopping centre in Rutherglen, south east of Glasgow in August at a cost of approximately £300,000 Director Andrew McGee said: “It was great to see so many enjoying themselves as we celebrated nine years of being business. “With our new club that’s opening

later in the year we are hoping to reinvigorate and reinvent the shopping centre as retail and the high street has taken a major hit in the last couple of years due to the pandemic. “The new gym will be the first of nine that we plan to open, all in shopping centres, by the year 2030. “Like our current gym at Wishaw they will all feature the full Myzone set-up as it has been a major success for us. “All new members that sign up will receive a belt as part of the membership package.”

F45 Training launches new David Beckham workout F45 Holdings Inc, the fastest growing fitness franchisor in the world according to Entrepreneur in 2022, has announced the launch of its latest workout DB45. Designed by global partner and investor, David Beckham, alongside chief of athletics and renowned Hollywood trainer Gunnar Peterson, this latest addition to the F45 timetable is an 11-station, footballinspired cardio class. David said: “I have loved working alongside Gunnar and the F45 team to create DB45, my first signature

workout. For me, training as part of a team has always been my favourite way to workout and my DB45 programme is influenced by exercises I did as a professional football player. “F45 always brings innovative and effective workouts to the timetable and I’m excited for the F45 community to finally be able to try out mine.” Inspired by his impressive career, DB45 combines exercises David used in past training sessions. Incorporating explosive, powerfocused, multi-directional exercises,

this 45-minute workout will see F45ers complete two sets in each station, moving through a “follow the leader,” football-inspired 4:4:2 class formation, with stations representing typical football positions including Goal, Defence, Midfield and Attack. Paying homage to Beckham’s iconic jersey numbers from his football career, the set timings will alternate between 32 seconds work, 15 seconds rest and 23 seconds work, followed by 20 seconds rest. Users will complete the ultimate finisher with seven 30 second

bodyweight exercises. “Working with a professional athlete like David Beckham to create DB45 has been great fun and offers a once in a lifetime opportunity for the F45 community to train like an iconic athlete,” added Gunnar. “DB45 offers something unique to the F45 timetable. It’s the first football-inspired class for F45, which combines the unique functional exercises that makes F45 so great as well as honouring David’s career – the F45 community is in for a lot of fun with this workout.”

The café and soft play areas will enable families to make the most of their time here. “Having Moorways Stadium next door, with its outdoor track capable of hosting national competitions, alongside outdoor pitches, we have delivered a wider vision and have created a real sports village for our city. Panatta – Super Pendulum Squat The Super Pendulum Squat is a specific machine for a full workout on thighs and glutes muscles, with main focus on the quadriceps and minimal stress on the lower spine. The wide footrest allows great freedom in the positioning of the feet leading to different muscles stimuli produced. The inclination adjustment of 2 positions allows to change the ankle flexion angle for the best customization of the exercise. The spring counterbalance system not only reduces the unloaded weight of the thrust unit, but also works in synergy with the lever mechanism that connects the two weightbearing arms to the thrust unit itself; the result is an ascending resistance curve over the entire ROM. The machine develops an everincreasing load curve that is in line with the force curve exerted by the main muscles involved in the exercise; this allows for a physiological muscle contraction that remains high and ideal over the entire ROM. The peculiarity of the Super Pendulum Squat lies in the guided trajectory which creates a movement halfway between squat and leg press, not reproducible with any other machine, and which therefore adds a new range of training stimuli to those already possible with the other Panatta machines. Starting from an initial position similar to the squat position, with hip and knee at maximum flexion, one arrives at the final position where there is complete knee extension with partial hip extension, as in the traditional Leg Press 45.

It pays special attention to user safety thanks to the easy start system with manually operated lever; finally, the low position of the disc holders facilitates the loading and unloading of the machine, reducing the risks and consequences of accidental impacts with people within the range of the weight holders themselves. EMD UK is awarded Sport England funding for healthier communities through group exercise EMD UK is amongst a group of more than 120 organisations working in partnership with Sport England to level up access to sport and physical activity across the country. The company will receive expertise, support and an investment of £5million in government and National Lottery funding from Sport England to codeliver its 10-year Uniting the Movement strategy. Marcus Kingwell, CEO of EMD UK, said: “I’m delighted that EMD UK has received this support from Sport England for the next five years. It’s a big vote of confidence in our ability to deliver and in the power of group exercise to create healthier communities. “But accepting the funding means we need to step up and accept our responsibilities to Uniting the Movement by working differently. “We’ve created a new strategy for the next five years which focuses on supporting instructors to be the best they can be by providing leadership, influencing the sector, collaborating with partners, and tackling inequalities. “We will also work closely with CIMSPA and UK Coaching to create a highquality, empowered workforce through appropriate governance and regulation. “We’ve made a lot of changes internally to make this happen, removing services which put us in competition with others and adding capacity for insight, solving

problems and sharing good practice. These are exciting times and we’re ready to go.” Sport England research shows that some groups are typically less active – women, people with long-term health conditions, disabled people, people from ethnically diverse communities and lower socio-economic groups. Right now, the opportunities to get involved in sport and activity – and reap the rewards of being active – depend too much on your background, your gender, your bank balance and your postcode. As the national governing body for group exercise, EMD UK supports

instructors to be the best they can be. The Sport England funding will be used to ensure instructors have the tools and skills required to do their job to the best of their ability. These will include the introduction of CPD soft skills courses and the continuation of educational webinars and resource packs. Working with sector partners and field experts, EMD UK will continue to lead the industry in research and insight. Gathering information from across the nation, EMD UK will be able to provide more help, support, and advice to activity providers, and ensure that group exercise is accessible to all people.

More than £550m is being invested in total, with the partners receiving funding for up to five years. This new funding model from Sport England provides longer-term financial security as organisations recover and reinvent from the Covid-19 pandemic. All partner organisations were selected by Sport England due to their ability to influence change and improvement at the heart of the system they are a part of, no matter how big or small. This is the first step on a journey to revolutionise Sport England’s approach to long-term partnerships as it seeks to partner and collaborate with innovative organisations to deliver Uniting the Movement and build a nation where everyone can get active. Tim Hollingsworth, CEO of Sport England, added: “Sport England’s goal is to get everyone active– no matter who they are, where they live, or what their background is. But we know that certain groups – like women, older adults, and those with long-term health conditions– are more likely to be inactive. “We can only innovate and tackle inequalities effectively by thinking about long-term change; Uniting the Movement is a long-term vision, and our funding approach needs to reflect that. “Changes to our funding model will help us achieve our goal, by making it easier for our partners to do what they need to do to level up and deliver.”

How to choose the right direct debit collections agency for your gym By Wayne Heath

THERE are many benefits to using Direct Debits at your club. They help generate a recurring income, they’re convenient for your members and it means that you can relax safe in the knowledge that you’ll be getting paid every month. However, finding a reliable collections service is a whole other matter. There are many organisations out there that aren’t clear about their service, resulting in more stress for the gym owner. Before you know it, you’ll be tied into a contract and paying high fees for an unsatisfactory service level. We’ve put together five key things you should think about to empower you in choosing the right Direct Debit Collections service for your club. Read reviews One of the first things you should check is their company reviews. TrustPilot and Capterra are good places to start, but see what people are saying on social media too. It’s a good way to read honest, unfiltered experiences that others have had with the organisation in question. A quick Google search will tell you everything you need to know; lookout for red flags such as poor customer service or hard to reach customer support services.

Wayne Heath

collecting money will only result in bad PR and an even lower chance of retaining the customer.

After all, this company will be managing your money, so a little due diligence goes a long way. Determine how intuitive the collections service is In an age where technology is more advanced than ever, you should expect your direct debit collections to be fast and seamless with minimal disruption to your members. That money should be paid into your account quickly and easily. How fast can the collections agency collect money and have it paid into your bank account? How intuitive is their service? Can the collections agency collect a Direct Debit at a time when the member is most likely to have enough money in their accounts? Something we hear a lot is Direct Debit collections agencies taking days (or sometimes weeks) to create a DD for a membership plan; meaning their slow process is going to hamper your business. The more time you spend waiting for them to do the work, the more likely you are to lose the membership sale. This doesn’t have to be something you just accept. ClubRight and GoCardless are integrated so that you can create a membership plan and start selling it within minutes. It means you can be more in control of your products and maximise sales opportunities. What does their portal look like

from your member’s point of view? It’s no secret that a solid brand identity is vital to your club’s success, but the same applies to your payments provider. Is it a separate portal that your members have to visit? Does the online joining URL look like something your customers would expect to see? Seeing an unknown third-party company in the URL of a ‘Enter Your Payment Details’ page doesn’t inspire confidence for your customer. As an example, ClubRight always makes sure that your company name is at the start of your online joining URL so that your customers see exactly what they expect to see and feel safe entering sensitive payment information. Do their company ethos and policies match yours? Some collection agencies offer varying degrees of debt collection. If debt collection is one of your musthaves, make sure you understand the ethos and the policies that your selected collections service operate on. They’re representing your business, so they should conduct themselves as such. If they have an unsympathetic and almost aggressive approach to chasing missed payments, it’ll give your business a bad name in your local area. More often than not, a hard and hostile approach to

Are you in control of your funds? Perhaps the most important thing to assess is whether you’re truly in control of your money. No collections service should be withholding funds from you or making it difficult for you to get paid. This includes charging hidden fees and deceptive pricing. You should know exactly what you’re paying and the level of service you can expect. Does the collections agency charge for failed payments, even though they haven’t successfully collected the money? Is the money collected ring-fenced by the collections agency? Ringfencing protects your money and guarantees that it can’t be spent in other places by the provider. A lack of ring-fencing means that the money your members have paid might never end up in your bank account. Surprisingly, several well-known collections agencies are not ring-fenced, so make sure you have clarity on how your money is protected. To summarise, don’t be afraid to ask the questions we’ve discussed. A good Direct Debit collections agency will be able to answer each one in detail and put your mind at ease when it comes to collecting money. Look out for any red flags that might suggest poor practice or low collection rates. Most importantly, remember that Direct Debits should make your life as a gym owner easier, not harder! ClubRight works closely with GoCardless to bring you a flexible Direct Debit solution that cuts through payments admin and keeps your members coming back for more. Offer flexible payment options, sign up new members in minutes and enjoy super low fees that will keep your rates competitive – all from within ClubRight. What are the pros and cons of using your personal money to refurbish your gym? IF YOU’RE starting a new business it’s likely that you’ll have to put up at least some of the money yourself. It can be difficult to borrow from a bank or attract other investors unless you’re also investing some of your own money. The easiest and most cost-effective way to provide your own financing for a new business is to use your personal savings. However, this can be risky, and you may not have enough to cover all the funding you need. You could also consider: n Getting a mortgage or a second mortgage. n Borrowing privately. n Getting an unsecured loan or borrowing on credit cards. n Selling possessions or assets – see www.webuygymequipment.com for a free valuation of your assets. Before borrowing any amount of money you should always think very carefully and only borrow what you need. For example, using credit cards for long-term expenditure can be very expensive, while some loans can be inflexible – you could end up paying extremely high interest over many years Create a contingency fund in case you need extra money to see you through a difficult period. Advantages of capital purchase or selffinancing: n You will know exactly how much money is available to run your gym. n You will not have to spend time trying

to secure funding from investors or banks. n You have slightly more control than other finance options. It also means that you don’t need to pay back or rely on outside investors or lenders. Disadvantages of self-financing your business: n Using your own money to finance your business may put a strain on your family

and personal life. You may not have enough money left over to cover your living costs. n If your business were to fail, you could lose your home and other personal possessions. n Many investors and venture capitalists can also provide mentoring and networking opportunities for you and your business – if you fund your business

alone, you will have to develop your own contacts and mentoring opportunities. n If you fund a business yourself, your development is restricted by your means, only investing in business equipment and marketing when you need to. Framework continues to unlock latent potential through leisure development DENBIGHSHIRE Leisure has recently announced the extension of the only end-to-end, leisure focused Framework, naming Alliance Leisure as the Framework’s continuing Lead Development Contractor. Here, Paul Cluett (FCIMSPA), managing director, Alliance Leisure, reviews some of the UK Leisure Framework’s successes to date and explains how the Framework will continue to provide an efficient and effective mechanism for public sector organisations to drive community transformation through leisure development.

Why is the renewal of the UK Leisure Framework so significant? The UK Leisure Framework provides a bespoke and proven, low risk mechanism through which public sector organisations, principally local authorities, can confidently scope, procure, design and build sustainable leisure development projects that directly address community needs. The Framework is unlike any other on the market. While its focus on leisure sets it apart, it is the full-service approach that makes it truly unique. In addition to using its trusted network of suppliers to scope, procure, design and build physical buildings, the framework offers services that drive whole-community engagement and provides a platform for funding schemes. This results in the creation of sustainable active environments engineered to encourage community level engagement and an increase in

Paul Cluett physical activity. As local authorities continue to be challenged by years of austerity measures, the effects of a global pandemic and now rising energy costs, the UK Leisure Framework offers a means through which to direct investment based on solid feasibility studies and robust commercial modelling. What would you say to local authorities reluctant to invest in leisure during these challenging economic times? Councils taking a long-term approach to whole community wellbeing are advised to consider calculated investment in leisure, even now, when there is more demand than ever on budgets. Redevelopment can act as a catalyst for economic growth, health and social cohesion that is hard to match. Traditionally, when tired leisure stock stops meeting community needs, it

becomes a drain on resources and the immediate reaction is to close facilities down. This is often not the only or the most effective solution and as often as not, closures are in areas of greatest deprivation and health inequalities. Through the UK leisure Framework, Alliance Leisure has spent the last ten years working with local authorities across the country presenting a case for reinvestment and regeneration in leisure. Take the SC2 development in Rhyl as an example. In 2019, Denbighshire County Council opened a £17million destination waterpark and adventure centre, SC2, delivered via the UK Leisure Framework. The development features several indoor and outdoor water features including a splash pad and a variety of flumes. The facility also launched the first TAGactive facility in Wales. The attraction has achieved a Gold Award from Visit Wales for the allround quality of the visitor experience and in its first summer season was attracting 10,000 visitors a week. This kind of uplift in footfall has acted as a catalyst for further regeneration of the promenade which now boasts a myriad of sustainable shops, restaurants and hotels. The area has been completely transformed from a tired, under-utilised seafront to a thriving promenade that is delivering huge commercial and social value. This is just one example. Many current UK Leisure Framework projects are

tapping into levelling up funding to tackle health, economic and social disparities , whilst others are utilising PSDS funds to invest in energy saving technologies and infrastructure across leisure stock to support Councils in the achievement of their zero net carbon targets.

What’s next for the UK Leisure Framework? To build on the success to date. This third generation of the Framework, has a total investment value of £2bn. With a committed project pipeline already valued at £250m, there is plenty of scope for many more transformational community projects. Alliance Leisure is looking forward to working closely with Framework owners, Denbighshire Leisure, over the coming years to help local authorities unlock the latent potential in leisure development. Where there is a will there is always a way. Leisure provision forms the backbone of our communities and, with the right facility and service mix, it can drive happiness, health and prosperity, creating active environments people are proud to call their community. Key Framework facts n Who owns the UK Leisure Framework? Denbighshire Leisure Ltd. n Lead development provider: Alliance Leisure. n Number of developments delivered to date: 69. n Value of completed projects: £112m. n Value of committed projects: £250m+. n Total value of the new UKLF: £2bn.

Grow your gym with a branded mobile app line at the grocery store. By making client engagement quick and easy, you’re more likely to have those clients engage!

THE average person has about 40 apps on their phone, comprising everything from banking to video games. More and more, people expect to be able to manage their days using self-service functions of phone apps. Providing a mobile app for your members is not only convenient for them but provides a crucial avenue to build client retention for your fitness business. Why apps work In the tech world, companies try to make their products more “sticky;” in other words, how do you make a customer keep using your product and make it so integral to their life that they won’t want to cancel? Apps are often one of the top ways product teams try to engage customers and extend their time as customers. There are a few different ways that apps achieve company growth and retention goals: 1. Apps help you stay connected It’s harder and harder to get in front of your customers – whether it’s through email, mail or social media. But apps can help you stay connected by sending relevant push

3. Apps give you more opportunities When you implement an app, you also get access to a wealth of data about your members. You’ll be able to see who is using the app and who is making purchases. You can use this information to fuel your outreach and try to engage people who haven’t been visiting or ask common gym-goers for referrals.

notifications. Consider using pushes to remind members that they have an upcoming class or to prompt them to sign up for a personal training session. 2. Apps help people save time Think about the times when you get an email which tells you to go to a website, where you need to remember a password and then

verify your identity on another app. It makes you want to never log in again, right? Compare that to the experience of opening an app you know well – a couple of taps later, and you’re able to do what you need to. In addition to the simplicity, apps also offer a level of convenience you won’t get elsewhere. You give members the ability to check gym hours while waiting in the

How to get a custom branded app It’s clear that implementing an app for your business can not only aid in growing your business but also improve client satisfaction. So, what’s next? Technology in fitness businesses DURING the last 10 years, applications and services have created possibilities at an amazing speed for an industry previously focused on brickand-mortar. Today there are solutions where users can create experiences out of their palm. But not without challenges. “On one hand, the user will raise new demands on services that facilities need to provide. “On the other hand, technology connects communication, entertainment, and fitness creating communities, excitement and of course new revenue streams,” said Johannes Cavallin, physiotherapist, coach, head of sales at Advagym. “Technology needs to fulfill a few but fundamental functions to be considered, such as automation, access or new experiences. It also needs to

be intuitive, convenient, and easy to use. “And what about availability? Should a solution be provided by wearables, or will the users phone be the best solution? “Will the technology be retrofittable on existing equipment or is an embedded solution locked within one ecosystem the best way to go?” Technology in fitness is not a magic bullet, but with the engagement and knowledge from the business and its staff, it creates new possibilities and business opportunities. Advagym by SONY has been designed to be easy to use and to upgrade existing equipment at facilities. Advagym has been developed in collaboration with and for exercisers, staff and club owners and delivers a future proof solution for experiences today and smart decisions tomorrow.

Introducing the Official Hammer Strength Box: a complete small group training solution SMALL group training is nothing new, but with more members seeking social interaction and engaging training experiences, gyms are looking for unique ways to create supportive training environments that encourage members to perform at their best. In response to these demands and in-line with a number of popular industry trends, Life Fitness has launched the Official Hammer Strength Box, a unique small group training offering from performance training specialists, Hammer Strength. Made up of three workout zones, the Official Hammer Strength Box incorporates strength training, functional training with Hammer Strength accessories, and high intensity interval training on cardio equipment. sound, flooring, and artwork, to create an immersive training environment and to inspire and motivate exercisers. Customers also receive a complete marketing pack with artwork provided for a range of print and digital materials to support promotional activities to engage and attract members. “The Official Hammer Strength Box creates a unique exerciser experience that at-home and virtual workouts simply cannot replicate,” added Frank van de Ven, VP International, Life Fitness. “It brings together best-in-class equipment, effective workouts, and a motivating environment designed to inspire and help members get results. For facilities, it’s an exciting USP that will drive member retention and acquisition.”

Introducing the Escape Barrow – the world’s first loaded carry and sled push combo ESCAPE Fitness has partnered with Pete Holman, world renowned strength coach and inventor of the TRX RipTrainer and Nautilus Glute Drive to bring to market the Escape Barrow – the world’s first easy-load, back-safe machine to combine two essential exercise modalities; the loaded carry and the sled push whilst making these significant moves accessible and safe for all. This pioneering piece of functional training equipment utilises the ‘loaded carry’, commonly known as the ‘farmer’s carry’, to target what Pete refers to as the ‘farm-strong hat-trick’; grip, hip and core strength, whilst also enabling a seamless, safe transition into a sled push without the need for time-costing equipment changes or the unsafe practice of rounding the back while picking up heavy kettlebells or dumbbells from the floor. “Having grown up on a small ranch in Littleton, Colorado where moving heavy loads by wheelbarrow was a daily requirement, I built incredible strength that

gave me the physical edge in competitive martial arts and was instrumental to me becoming a US national TaeKwon-Do champion,” said Pete. “Knowing the huge benefits of being ‘farm strong’ that I experienced growing up, I designed the Escape Barrow as the first machine ever to combine these two vital exercise modalities into one machine. “The loaded carry is one of the best exercises out there to build muscular strength and increase bone mineral density whilst the sled push is an absolutely essential training method to enhance power and metabolic conditioning. “Being strong isn’t about aesthetics. These exercises promote crucial components to building a healthy body in order to live a longer, more mobile and pain-free life.” Galvanised for outdoor use and durability, this piece of kit adds a new dimension to any turf space or functional training zone. Despite its small footprint and non-intimidating design, the Escape Barrow packs a punch with an impressive load capacity of 200kg/ 440lbs making this the perfect piece of kit for everyone, from the casual gym-goer to the toughest competitive athlete. Delivered to market exclusively by Escape Fitness, the Escape Barrow empowers anyone to escape their limits and safely take their performance to the next level. Matthew Januszek, CEO of Escape Fitness, added: “Escape is constantly questioning the ordinary and exploring ways to make that ordinary, extraordinary. “Through this partnership with Pete, this is what we did regarding the idea of being ‘farm strong’. “This isn’t a gimmick, the Escape Barrow doesn’t just spice up a functional training zone, it’s been expertly designed to enhance the highly effective merits of these complex functional exercises, combining them effortlessly to make a workout not only extremely effective, but also fun and accessible for all.” The Escape Barrow has a carbon steel frame and two plate loading points, one on either side of the central frame weight plate to ensure an even distribution of load throughout lift, execution and set-down.

Four handles, two vertical and two horizontals, provide multiple grip options, promoting the engagement of different muscle groups depending on the exercise being performed. Two thick, durable tyres at the front of The Escape Barrow are complemented by two ‘skis’ at the rear, enabling the structure to be rolled, pushed, dragged or pulled, creating an array of exercise options, whilst remaining stable when in its resting position. The ski runners also have a delron underbelly to protect the flooring, and the runners themselves, from undue scuffing and wear. Matthew added: “Once you add the Escape Barrow to your functional training offer, you will wonder how you ever managed without it. “This piece of kit is set to transform functional training in the way the Smith machine transformed independent weight training in the 1950s.” The Escape Barrow is available now for pre-order. To find out more visit www.escapefitness.com/barrow or call 01733 313535.

and that means more than 7,000 sites have been contacted. Details of facilities, prices, membership, developments have all been updated and uploaded into the database. The Leisure Database would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who participated. Data scientists have completed their in-depth analysis on trends across the public and private sectors, breaking them down into mini-sectors including franchise,

hotel clubs, independents, higher and further education, management companies, and trusts. These are then further subdivided into low-cost, mid-market and premium facilities. Up to 200 data fields can be collected for each site so over the years The Leisure Database has collected more than one billion data points allowing some weird and wonderful questions to be asked, and getting some stunning answers.

added: “Our goal with this project was to create a high-performance facility, worthy of a high-performance team. “While there are other companies that specialise in strength training kit or cardio machines, Peloton Commercial had the complete package that we were looking for. “Our goal is to deliver race winning performance each weekend and, with the fine margins in F1, we’re always looking for an edge over our competitors. With Peloton, we can reach that target.” It’s not just about gaining a physical edge on the competition. The Peloton Commercial team will also work with Oracle Red Bull Racing to take an active role in promoting health and wellness within the Team going forwards. Scott Trinder, Peloton Commercial UK sales leader – clubs and other verticals, added: “We are increasingly seeing companies putting employee wellbeing front and centre, and Oracle Red Bull Racing is ahead of the curve. “In partnering with Peloton, Oracle Red Bull Racing is future-proofing its facilities, providing a best-in-class offer that will ensure it can engage with and attract employees from all demographics by demonstrating that employee health and wellness is more crucial to them than ever.”

Unlocking community tools that make exercise habits stick Advertiser’s announcement

SIMPLICITY is at the heart of attraction. There are so many fitness facility campaigns that are set to draw in more members or build brand awareness but, if they’re clumsy or solely trying to jump on the back of trends, then they’re not going to stand the test of time. Simplicity is key, especially with something as intricate as the detail of behaviour change, which is ultimately what we’re all trying to achieve. Rewarding effort instead of ability alone means that everyone gets to feel good about exercise, no matter what they can do or how they want to train. When we work out, we should all be rewarded for the effort we put in. Heart rate zones tailored to a gym member’s percentage of max heart rate ensures that everyone’s included, as effort is tailored to the individual. Having heart rate monitors that can be worn in multiple different ways, in the gym, outdoors and in water, makes it easy for you to inspire positive change, create a fun environment and reward everyone for their hard work. Community by the numbers Social connections through a physical activity-focussed digital network

Technology options that talk to each other The importance of integration has never been more apparent. People want every app and equipment option to talk to each other, and gone are the days of having four apps on the go at once, or using multiple devices for different needs. Slimming World’s online activity videos receive warm welcome from members SLIMMING World, the UK and Ireland’s leading weight-management company, has received positive feedback from its members regarding its newly launched online fitness videos. The videos, created in collaboration with fitness and wellness content creation company 1FitLife, are available exclusively to members of Slimming World’s community groups and online service via its website and app. They were launched earlier this year to complement the organisation’s Body Magic physical activity support programme, following research that found members would welcome additional practical resources to help them incorporate movement into their daily routines. Carolyn Pallister, Slimming World’s nutrition, research and health policy manager, added: “We’re thrilled with the feedback the new online workouts are receiving. “They’re an additional tool to help our members introduce physical activity into their daily lives or increase how much they’re moving in the comfort of their own homes. “Since their launch members have described them as fun, easy to follow, uplifting, positive and encouraging. “Slimming World’s unique Body Magic physical activity programme facilitates

behaviour change by supporting members to build up their fitness levels at their own pace, with expert advice to recognise and break down personal barriers to activity. “We know that as well as members becoming more active after being

introduced to Body Magic, they also report many health benefits such as lowering their blood pressure and improving their mobility.” An initial series of 52 workouts was created followed by a further 14 workouts, which were developed for

members who are less mobile, including those using a wheelchair. One Slimming World member said: “I just thought I’d say how impressed and happy I am, as a wheelchair user, to find exercises specifically for people who have a disability on the Slimming World website. I do go to the gym and push myself around everywhere, but it’s nice to know I can use the app to get some extra exercises too and to get exercises like everyone else.” The 1FitLife videos have drawn on Slimming World’s expertise and understanding, helping members build up physical activity step by step at a pace that suits them in segments of 10 and 15 minutes, so members can enjoy routines wherever they are on their weight-loss journey or however active they are. David Langridge, managing director at 1FitLife, said: “The content we produced with Slimming World was specially designed to provide Slimming World’s members with realistic and achievable routines, and to support everyone from true beginners to those wanting ideas about how to build in new ways of being active, ensuring it becomes a sustainable lifestyle habit. “We’re delighted to be hearing feedback that the videos have done just that.”

Spruce up your merchandise MERCHANDISE continues to play an important role in leisure operations. Whether used to add value at an internal event, attract attention as part of an outreach programme or reward members as part of an acquisition or retention initiative, gifting or selling added-value complementary items can really help to elevate an experience. Taylor Made Designs managing director James Taylor said: “We supply quality merchandise to many leisure operators, including GLL, 1Life, Everybody Sport and Recreation and Places Leisure. “We offer a huge selection of custom-branded products from classics such as workout towels, spa slippers, water bottles, and padlocks to baseball caps, charity bracelets, bathrobes and stress balls. “The key to our success is our relentless commitment to providing new, high-quality products that excite and inspire. “For example, aluminium, temperature retaining water bottles are now the order of the day, largely replacing the traditional plastic models and we are continuing to enjoy growing demand for trampoline socks.” He added: “Recently we were approached by We Work Well, a premium B2B event company focused on the fitness, hospitality

and spa sectors, to supply several items to support their W3Spa event. “The event hosted more than 90 suppliers and buyers at the luxury Le Méridien Ra Beach Hotel and Spa, Tarragona, Spain and delivered an unrivalled high-end experience.

“The team wanted a range of custom branded merchandise items that would enhance their event programme and bring value to the attendees overall experience. “Despite the tight turnaround time and challenges of moving items

through customs we delivered the merchandise as required.” As part of the event, delegates were tasked with a hands-on culinary competition. We Work Well Inc founder Lucy Hugo said: “We worked with James Taylor and his team to outfit our attendees with branded T-shirts and aprons for our team-building activity, the addition of the merchandise really added to the fun and sparked competition and camaraderie among the contestants. “In addition to the aprons and T-shirts, Taylor Made Designs also supplied delegate welcome bags and branded baseball hats. We have found that use of merchandise is a really effective means of brand promotion. “When used in a thoughtful way that engages people and creates great memories we find attendees build an emotional connection to our company. We are excited as we explore new ideas for promotional products for our W3Fit event in October.” If you feel your current merchandise needs a makeover or you have a promotion or event you would like to complement with some high quality, competitively priced merchandise, contact the team on 01202 473311 or email hello@taylormadedesigns.co.uk

93 per cent gym membership collection rate at Leonardo Royal Hotel Health Club HARVARD Business review say it’s anywhere from five to 25 times cheaper to retain an existing customer than it is to acquire a new one – a significant incentive for any business to implement a solid retention strategy. Retention and subsequently membership collection rates significantly impact the profitability of a health club, with some operators reporting rates as low as 80 per cent. This could be down to a number of factors including the quality of service provided, the social economics of the area, or the effectiveness of the collection company. Juvenate Edinburgh Health Club within Leonardo Royal Hotel completed a six-week membership drive campaign managed by Creative Fitness Marketing last year which pulled in 200 new longterm members to their club. Six months later and the collection rate of these 200 members is at a fantastic 93 per cent. This high collection rate can be attributed to a number of factors including: the fantastic facilities, quality club staff and the CFM marketing and sales approach used to sign up the new members. CFM business development manager

Harry Ainslie said: “Our sales staff are experts in their field and focus on converting prospects to long-term memberships, to ensure consistent income for our clients. “It’s all about building up the value of the offering, focussing on the USP of the club and showing how all of this will help the new member not only achieve their goals, but maintain them for the long term.” In an industry where ‘no contract memberships’ are becoming more and more popular, it’s no longer enough to give prospects a ‘museum tour’ of the club. Instead, spending time with them on the initial tour and asking the right questions is imperative. Helping the prospects visualise themselves achieving their goals is all part of CFM’s process to convert members to long term memberships and maximise collection rates. Juvenate’s Scott Young added: “The interaction with new customers and also our existing members was great, with the team making them all feel welcome and comfortable. “I would definitely recommend CFM to anyone looking to gain exposure and new members to their club or gym.” Find out more at cfm.net or call 0115 777 3333.

PT management service launches new academy YOUR Personal Training, the UK’s largest PT management service, has launched its own bespoke training academy to provide ‘gold standard’ PT graduates for the fitness and leisure industry. The YOUR Academy training package has been approved by Active IQ and will be spearheaded by two renowned and successful industry PT mentors, Kevin Baker and Karl Muir. Aaron McCulloch, managing director of YOUR Personal Training, said: “For some time the leisure industry’s education standards have slowly been declining, with a race to the bottom in terms of price and consequently standards; we could see that, quite often, newly qualified PTs were inexperienced and not able to provide effective PT provision. “It’s critical that a Level Three PT qualification is thorough and comprehensive – it shouldn’t be a quick fix to get more ‘bums on seats’. “We have created YOUR academy to fix this problem both for PTs and for operators, and are thrilled that our qualification has the stamp of approval by Active IQ. The team at YPT understands what it takes to be a successful personal trainer. “We have developed our training offer using our years of industry

knowledge and with carefully selected delivery partners, to produce a qualification that is something truly special. We are in the unique position where we can provide a complete full-circle journey for PTs from qualification to employment. “YOUR Academy’s PT programme and qualification will produce PTs who are industry ready, giving them a higher chance of business success. Graduates will have more knowledge, skills and resources to truly understand how to build a successful personal training career and a thriving enterprise.” The qualification will take 18 weeks from start to completion, with students expected to complete 15 hours a week training, as well as eight face to face days, and assessments throughout. It will be the most in-depth and comprehensive PT qualification in the sector, giving learners more practical coaching skills. YOUR Academy’s first intake of students will start in July, with the onsite training taking place in Manchester. Further academies will be based out of Leeds, Birmingham, London, Cardiff, Bristol and Scotland. https://www.yourpersonal traininguk.co.uk/
