MPs begin physical activity challenge ‘Fit for Office’ following Westminster health checks

POLITICIANS across the country have signed up to a new health challenge called ‘Fit for Office’, which encourages them to recognise the benefits of physical activity for themselves and the communities they serve.

More than 130 participants from around 50 offices have signed up for the month-long challenge so far, which will see MPs, Peers and their offices battle it out to be crowned Westminster’s ‘Physical Activity Champion’.

The challenge, organised by ukactive, the UK’s trade body for the physical activity sector, and supported by global fitness tracking provider Myzone, aims to raise awareness among policymakers of the benefits of physical activity for their own physical, mental and social wellbeing, and its importance to the nation’s health.

Huw Edwards, CEO of ukactive, said: “‘Fit for Office’ is the perfect opportunity for MPs, Peers and their staff to embrace the benefits of physical activity for their own physical and mental wellbeing.

“The challenge will also help demonstrate to our elected officials the importance of physical activity for our nation’s health and the economy – the Government’s two biggest priorities.

“As the challenge gets underway, we want to see our politicians and their teams visiting their local gyms, leisure centres and pools to get active and witness first-hand the incredible role played by these facilities in our

communities.”

To complement the challenge, parliamentarians were recently invited to Westminster Gym, which is managed by Jubilee Hall Trust, for a series of health checks with Dr Hussain Al-Zubaidi from ITV’s ‘This Morning’ programme, alongside Dr Shahnaz Hussain, consultant psychiatrist for mental health, and Dr Jo Fleming, NHS health and wellbeing coach.

Being sustainable in 2024 – the little things matter

WHEN thinking about our clothing and uniform, we don’t usually consider the sustainability of what we are wearing.

This year Taylor Made Designs is influencing change by showing the options of fabric that would positively impact the environment.

Most uniform is made from polyester fabric because it is durable, moisture resistant and last longer due to these factors.

However, one of polyester’s main components is plastic fibres, meaning it is a non-renewable source.

That’s why we recommend the alternative, RPET, or recycled polyester.

Recycled polyester is a fabric that is made from recycled plastic, once the plastic is collected and sterilised, the plastic is dried out and crushed.

These small pieces of plastic are heated up and a spinneret is used, this creates the yarn which is put through a crimping machine.

This yarn can be dyed any colour and made into fabric.

This may seem like virgin polyester however, this is using recycled

bottles to remove waste from landfills, it also cuts out a lot of pollution that is used in the process of making polyester which is derived from petroleum.

Recycled polyester fabric has just as many advantages as polyester if not more, it’s durable, moisture resistant, elastic, heat resistant and holds colour through washes.

This makes it perfect for gyms and activity centre clothing that needs to withstand lots of movement and frequent washing, but most importantly… it’s sustainable.

It’s creating a large impact by taking little steps, by taking these steps not only are we building a safe environment for us to grow, but we are also taking steps to improve our uniform for our staff. In 2024 we are striving to be our best.

The doctors provided support with any ongoing physical ailments, as well as sharing techniques to establish habits to support and maintain health and wellbeing, with visitors encouraged to sign-up for the ‘Fit For Office’ challenge. Participants in the challenge have been given a MZ-Switch heart rate monitor that measures their physical activity across the month, with the technology

tracking ‘effort’ levels rather than volume or distance covered – ensuring the challenge can be enjoyed and accessed by all.

They will then accrue Myzone Effort Points that can be collected by exercising within the target heart-rate zones over a given period – the more effort that is put into each workout or activity, the more points that can be earned.

It is hoped that by taking part, MPs will also be encouraged to show support for the physical activity sector, which plays an essential role in helping to prevent 20 chronic health conditions, including type two diabetes, obesity, heart disease, many types of cancer, depression and anxiety, and dementia – generating more than £4.1bn in healthcare savings every year.

Kim Leadbeater MP, who is taking part in the challenge, added: “Working in politics is a true privilege but like many jobs it is also very demanding, which can have a detrimental effect on our health and wellbeing.

“I am a firm believer in the benefits of physical activity for our physical and mental health, but also for our effectiveness at work.

“It’s great to take on the ‘Fit for Office’ challenge and I’ll also be hosting some workouts to help participants get involved and demonstrate how physical activity can support all of us in our dayto-day lives.”

CGIs reveal new luxury spa and wellness offering

MAR Hall Hotel, Golf & Spa Resort has commenced its renovation journey and shared a sneak preview of the new luxury spa and leisure facilities planned for relaunch during the first quarter of this year.

Meticulously designed under the expertise of Curveline Design, the new leisure facilities, incorporating both the gym and pool hall, will see a complete overhaul of the existing spaces.

With input from PRIMAL, the Mar Hall gym will be transformed into a state-of the-art facility.

and PRIMAL Performance Series half racks, benches and free weights.

The carefully considered gym layout offers interchangeable workout options, including small group classes and personal training sessions for both members and guests.

General manager Joe Gallacher said: “It is an incredibly exciting time at Mar Hall. After a period of uncertainty for our members, guests, and staff, we are now in an extremely strong position with a multi-million-pound investment that will return the entire resort to its former glory.

“Since the acquisition, we have been busy working behind the scenes making

much-needed, immediate cosmetic changes to the property.

“We are now thrilled to be kickstarting the first phase of a very comprehensive redevelopment programme at the resort with the introduction of a new spa and leisure offering, and to be able to give our members and guests a sneak preview (the first of many) of what is to come.

The work is the first phase of the multimillion-pound redevelopment project at the five-star resort, as it seeks to reposition itself as one of Scotland’s top resorts and an international destination.

Later this year, the resort will also undergo a major overhaul of its existing

spa facilities, with outline plans including the addition of an indoor/outdoor wellness suite, providing stunning views out to the River Clyde and the rolling Old-Kilpatrick hills beyond.

In addition to the spa and leisure works being undertaken by Curveline, a select team of award-winning interior designers, architects and hospitality consultants has been appointed to transform Mar Hall and to take its redevelopment project forward.

The aspiration for the resort, which has previously hosted Harry Styles, David Beckham, and Beyonce, is to rival Scottish five-star destinations such as Cameron House and Gleneagles.

Team GB choose Absolute Performance for Olympic gyms

CARDIFF-based gym design and installation company Absolute Performance has been awarded the contract to design, supply and install three gyms for Team GB at Paris 2024.

This marks the third Olympic cycle that the company has been selected to support Team GB for both the Olympics and Paralympics.

As part of the contract, Absolute Performance will be responsible for designing and installing three stateof-the-art gyms that will provide Team GB’s athletes with the best possible facilities to prepare for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The gyms will be equipped with top-of-the-range equipment and amenities, including strength and conditioning equipment, cardio machines and recovery facilities, to support the athletes’ physical and mental wellbeing.

The logistics involved may not be quite as challenging as they were for the games in Rio or Tokyo, but the coordination and planning required to install more than 100 tonnes of equipment at the three sites in readiness for July and disassemble after the Paralympics finish is a huge undertaking.

After the games close the equipment is planned to be repurposed as part of a Team GB initiative.

Half term fitness boost for children and families

OLDHAM Council teamed up with Oldham Active (Oldham Community Leisure) to provide children living in temporary accommodation and their families with free passes to the charitable trust’s five wellbeing centres.

The passes gave 500 eligible families the chance to enjoy a range of activities, including family swim sessions, exercise classes, state-of-the-art gyms and badminton courts at Oldham Active’s centres in Oldham, Failsworth, Chadderton, Saddleworth and Royton.

Stuart Lockwood, chief executive of Oldham Active, said: “We want every family to have the chance to create memories together and we’re glad we could play a small part in making that happen.

“Oldham Active offers the largest range of leisure facilities, activities and gyms with swimming pools in Oldham,

and we know families enjoyed using the offer during half term.”

Councillor Arooj Shah, leader of Oldham Council, added: “Oldham is in a housing crisis, with more than 500 families currently living in temporary accommodation; and among them are 500 children.

“That’s 500 kids without their own bed, a place to do their homework, living in places like hotels and B&Bs.

“We understand that finding enjoyable and affordable activities during the holidays as a family can sometimes be challenging – that’s even more difficult if you’re living in temporary accommodation.

“These passes gave them some free fun and family memories. Huge thanks to Oldham Active for their support in helping people in our borough to access their excellent venues for free.”

Balanced Body partners with Third Space on new studio

THIRD Space’s latest club in Wimbledon features a new state-of-the-art Reformer Pilates studio in response to members seeking a low-impact, fullbody workout for all abilities.

Partnering with Balanced Body, global provider of Pilates equipment and education with a trading history spanning more than 45 years, the new studio hosts 20 Balanced Body Allegro® 2 Reformers with Towers.

James Shaw, Pilates Master Trainer at Third Space, said: “The introduction of Reformer Pilates is another example of Third Space offering members a 360-fitness experience, enabling them to tap into more holistic, mind-body focussed training modalities to not only complement the current fitness offering in-club, but elevate it.”

The installation comes at a time when Pilates, and indeed, Reformer Pilates is seeing substantial growth, driven by the increasing focus and adoption of a more holistic approach to fitness, health and wellbeing as well as wider education regarding the many benefits of Pilates training.

Gym is unexpected haven for widower

A WIDOWER who never thought he’d step foot inside a gym has hailed his local leisure centre as his reason to get up in the morning.

David King, 75, from Cheadle, said his career as a joiner and passion for the outdoors always kept him fit and healthy. So, when his physiotherapist suggested he should join a gym to help heal his broken foot, he was reluctant.

Four years later he says joining Life Leisure in Cheadle is the best thing he’s done, especially since losing his wife, boosting both his physical and emotional health.

The grandfather-of-one said: “I cannot express how much I enjoy and value my time at Life Leisure. I enjoy the fitness aspect and feeling strong and healthy again, but I also enjoy seeing people and the social side too – it’s really quite special. I’m not very sporty and I’ve never been interested in leisure centres, so it’s amazing to think that I’m here almost every day now - if my wife could see me now she wouldn’t believe it!”

David, whose wife Diane passed away from lung cancer six years ago, added that it’s unexpectedly filled part of the hole she has left.

He said: “I’m not a particularly sociable guy – when I was a kid I was always the shy one in the corner and the last to be picked for the sports team. But at Life Leisure you feel part of the family.

“It’s also nice to be around people whose lives wouldn’t normally cross. There are a lot of young mums who I really get along with and have a good laugh with – it sounds odd, but my wife was a very strong character and was

just like them, so it really fills a hole being around women who have similar attitudes and outlook on life.”

David’s favourite thing to do at the gym is the R1G classes, which are strengthening and exercise sessions that take place on the gym floor with other members.

He said: “I wasn’t keen on going to the gym because I didn’t think it was my kind of place. I had visions of all these machines and robots – but I couldn’t have been more wrong.

“As soon as I walked in, I was pleasantly surprised. The thing that immediately struck me was that there were people

my age there, they weren’t sweating and pumping iron as they say, but chatting and laughing together while they did their exercises. It just felt right straight away.

“I have to admit it took me about four or five months to get up the courage to do a class, but I’m so glad I did, they are my favourite part now.”

David added: “I would urge anyone who needs a bit of a boost – either physically or mentally – to give it a go. You must take the first step, but once you do, you won’t regret it.

“I dread to think what my life would be like if I didn’t come here – I’d probably still be in bed.”

Adam Johnson, a Life Leisure fitness instructor who leads some of David’s classes, said: “Dave is a fantastic example of what being a member of Life Leisure is all about.

“Not only does he come along and get something out of it physically and mentally, but he also has a fantastic attitude and zest for life which brings out the best in those around him.

“Life Leisure isn’t just about coming to the gym for exercise, it’s about meeting other people, sharing experiences, and supporting one another.”

He added: “We know Dave wasn’t keen at first – like many people he didn’t think a gym environment was for him, so we are thrilled he gave it a go and hasn’t looked back.

“We’d urge anyone who wants to get active, meet new people or is looking for a bit of a routine and community to come and give us a try. It’s an inclusive environment where all are welcome.”

The Spa at Beckenham gym to undergo facelift

THE gym at Bromley’s The Spa at Beckenham is to benefit from a £400,000 facelift as part of a long-term, multiphase investment plan by Mytime Active to maintain its status as a state-of-theart, high-end health and wellness facility over the coming years.

Work on phase one, a total refurbishment of the main gym floor including new fitness equipment, will start shortly and is expected to take around five weeks to complete.

Mytime Active will temporarily move the gym into a downstairs studio whilst the work is underway to minimise disruption to customers. The new look gym will reopen in April.

Jason Stanton, Mytime Active’s CEO, said: “The refurbishment of the gym at The Spa at Beckenham is very important to us as we continue to invest in our services and assets.

“As a charitable trust we don’t have shareholders to pay and all profits are reinvested back into the community with the aim of helping local people to improve and maintain their health and wellbeing.

“We’re upgrading the facilities to ensure we have the very best equipment there is to offer and maintain The Spa

as an industry-leading facility, as well as keeping up with new training trends.

“The refurbishment will enhance the overall experience for our members and hopefully encourage even more people in the community to try out what we have to offer.”

As part of the detailed planning behind the refurbishment, Mytime Active has designed a safe, natural journey around the gym for both new and experienced users, creating a series of zones using different coloured lighting to help vary the experience by changing the atmosphere.

Darren Anderson, Mytime Active’s principal fitness and wellbeing manager, who is leading the redevelopment project, added: “We very carefully considered the new layout to minimise any ‘gym intimidation’, putting equipment to help our Fresh Start members, those who may be new to exercise, recovering from illness or living with a long-term medical condition, as well as our GP referral customers and less confident gym users, near to the entrance.

“Fixed resistance machines and eGym strengthening and toning equipment, which creates a personalised workout

for each user, tracking and adapting for each user’s progress and goals, will also be located on the ground floor.

“We hope this will encourage progression once members are more comfortable with the gym floor setting and equipment.

“There will also be a selection of cardio equipment with the most up-to-date interactive viewing screens. The gym will feature brand new, top-of-the-range fitness equipment from Life Fitness, Keiser, Physical Company and Power Plate, to name a few.”

A functional training zone will be placed at the rear of the gym, along with a small free weights area for those not wishing to train in the main free weights area in the upper gym.

Darren added: “The zonal lighting will simplify navigation around the gym and has been selected based on a psychological match to the activity being undertaken as, like music, lighting can really make a difference to the focus, energy and mood of a fitness space.

“For instance, in the dedicated free weight section on the ground floor, the lighting will be dark blue, as blue is shown to be energising and increases productivity. It also calms the mind and

improves concentration levels, where as red light, used in the functional zone, stimulates the fight or flight response, giving a burst of energy.

“Music choice is also very important and the genre will be selected to match different customer groups. For instance, we will have upbeat modern music playing for the mixed age range we see on a Monday morning, but quieter 80s music during our Fresh Start session on Tuesday mornings and mainstream music on Friday afternoons when it’s a mixed demographic.”

A selection of small group exercise classes for adult, junior and Primetime over 60s customers will also be delivered on the gym floor, including free weight lifting clinics, eGym athletic and muscle building classes and a series of different functional training classes.

“These small, bookable classes will help increase interaction, exercise education and promote the new training equipment to ensure our customers get the most from their workouts, as well as creating a training environment we hope will appeal to people who may not normally participate in conventional group exercise classes,” Darren concluded.

I see there are a lot of questions about bodybuilding without machines. Are you limited to free weights for what reason? I am a 7x Mr. O and I don’t want you to waste your time either using poor tools. I want you use the best tools so that you get the most benefit. In my opinion, it’s always about providing hope for people who have yet to start their bodybuilding journey to any level: “Look, I understand you because I’ve been there.”

A BODYBUILDING LEG WORKOUT WITHOUT MACHINES – CAN IT BE BETTER?

I was open-minded enough to take my usual standard leg workout and apply it to those amazing machines. Let me convey the profound sensations and emotions experienced because I want you not to waste your time and get the most effective tools – mindset and machines – for your success.

Anyone that has followed my journey would know that training on equipment has been a top priority because of the fact that I train alone majority of the time. A lot of the guys that I would compete against would always make jokes about me: “He doesn’t train that hard because he only uses machines.” On the contrary, there are many reasons I like machines and I know the importance of training with the right equipment and getting the right intensity.

TRAPPED BY FREE WEIGHTS? IT KILLS YOUR RESULTS

Some people are going to say: “Oh, well, I’m fine with the equipment that I have and that’s fine.” But I answer: “You haven’t tried these machines yet.” To me, the curiosity should always be running wild in your mind and thinking: “Can it be better?”.

I got into the sport of bodybuilding because of someone that told me “You can’t”. This added motivation and hold me accountable. I wanted to feel better. I needed the challenge. When people decide on equipment, they choose equipment without knowing how it works and understanding how it was made. That is essential, as you want never to stop challenging yourself with new, better tools.

In my first Panatta machine workout, I found myself humble and honoured to relearn some details because there were both prototypes and incredibly good machines I never trained with. I had to drag myself out of the comfort zone. I thought, I needed those machines at home and if I had had those back in the day, I would have been better than greater.

FOUR TIPS TO GET THE MOST FROM A NEW LEG MACHINE

In front of equipment, you have never trained with, you’re dealing with the unknown. You’re dealing with the different feelings of like: “Is this really going to work? I’m really excited. I really want to grow. I really want to get lean and muscular… I want to do it, but I don’t want to hurt myself.”

My purpose here is to share not just like how to train, but how to train your mind and how to use the tools/ machines and how to… express yourself. Because bodybuilding is a form of expression. How you focus is how you become that change you visualise. Here’s Heath’s Power Play for You.

FIRST OFF, CONQUER YOURSELF. TO DO IT, IT’S PARAMOUNT YOU KNOW YOURSELF.

You have to conquer your fear when you look at the machine or look at the barbell, and you say: “Oh, I can’t, I can’t.” And why can’t you? Because maybe in your mind you see you can’t. But then if you’re a little bit curious, you can push yourself beyond the unknown and finally get back with a victory. During the workout with Rudi I was thinking: “Let me try a little something.” I took a step back and I thought: “Okay, Phil, make sure you train smart and understand how this movement works. Trust your body it will get used to this movement.”

SECOND, TASTE AN INCREDIBLE SENSORIAL EXPERIENCE. Equipment is something you have to feel. It’s very important for me to try it. And then when I try it, then I’m actually not just thinking like most people “I have to move this weight.”

My job is to allow myself to push from A to B but I want to feel the entire movement because I’m trying to think of the muscle fibers that are being involved. I’m visualising it. Especially as a bodybuilder that competes, I know every rep has to be a contraction and I’m then taking data of the biomechanics, for example: “Is my quad getting worked, what’s going on, is my body reacting to this movement as opposed to that movement?” Honestly, the reason why I like these machines is because they lock me into the perfect angle, the exercises are easy to do with more confidence and no pain, they are effective to create muscular development.

DON’T USE TOO MUCH WEIGHT.

Now that I tried it and have the confidence, I add more weight. First off, let me understand how this movement works with very little weight and getting the peak contractions from here to here [in one direction], from here to here [from another direction]. Before you know, you will be challenging yourself.

“I DO FEEL IT IN MY TARGET MUSCLE!”

As a bodybuilder, you want to know not just about how much weight you can lift, but you want to know how your muscles are contracting throughout each repetition from start to finish. I know what to think: “I want the resistance on my target muscle”. Peak contraction is usually peak resistance but with Panatta

it’s resistance all the way. That’s why the strength curve is much different than all of the other equipment I’ve ever used. When you understand the biomechanics –and those years of training taught me it – the workout with Panatta equipment is like a dream come true.

When I’m training, I know I’m going to grow at each and every rep because it’s not painful, it is very safe, and it is exact. These different Panatta machines let me pull and push from different angles and get the perfect repetition.

REMEMBER THE PURPOSE: TO GET THE BEST TOOLS FOR THE PERFECT REP.

Through the years of training and using different types of equipment, all of us always want an edge to be the best and is looking for a better equipment, a better everything.

Many years ago, I wanted a machine that was sent to the gym. I used to train with that for a pre-contest. Surprisingly, I did not like it because it hurt. I thought: “Why does this hurt? It should not hurt.” At that point I was upset because I didn’t have the equipment that I really need to grow. Most people may not know that there are differences and not all equipment is the same because they haven’t had an opportunity to train on the top equipment. It’s like with a vehicle. Put somebody in the Ferrari for the first time, even in the passenger seat, they smile. They like because of how it feels. If they never tried it, they would not know.

So that’s why this is very important we choose certain types of equipment. You have to know both the machine (how it works, who made it, what steel was used, which wood and padding,.. all these small details) and yourself.

Because in bodybuilding what are we trying to do?

Alliance Leisure delivers knockout BOX12 studio

WORKING in partnership with Walsall Council, Alliance Leisure has delivered its first dedicated BOX12 boxing-based boutique training facility within the footprint of an established leisure centre.

The new studio, created from under-utilised office space, occupies a new studio on the first floor and can accommodate up to 16 participants at any one time, all working out in a circuit style format, supported by digital coaching and exercise demonstrations.

Stuart Webb, group manager at Walsall Council, said: “We were looking to create something special, something unique in the community that would inspire people to get active and stay active.

“Alliance Leisure has an excellent reputation and track record for developing engaging place-based activity spaces so employing their expertise was a no-brainer. We wanted to obtain maximum impact and engagement for our £300,000 budget.

“When the BOX12 studio was first tabled as an idea we were a little sceptical. It sounded interesting but we were struggling to understand how it might work as a ‘box within a box’ at Oak Park Active Living Centre.

“Our concerns were soon put to rest when Alliance hosted visits to an existing BOX12 facility located at Newcastle Under Lyme. We fell in love with the energy, fun and uniqueness of the experience and were convinced it would ignite a

spark in the community and people would want to get involved.

“We were also encouraged by the fact that the two BOX12 founders are also co-owners of the established Hatton Boxing brand.”

BOX12 is a 36-minute workout consisting of 12, three-minute rounds that combine boxing and functional fitness exercises.

Each exercise is separated by a three-minute rest period. The workout is fast-paced, training strength, power and cardiovascular fitness as well as balance, reaction time and flexibility.

Simple adjustments to give you more time

DO you often find yourself wishing for more hours in the day? More time to do things that will grow your business, improve your service, or work on professional/personal development? With a few simple adjustments and tips you can find more time in your day to do the things that will take you closer to your goals and help you get on top of things you’ve wanted/needed to do for a while.

1. Limit distractions: Identify and minimise the distractions that eat into your time. Turn off notifications on your phone, set specific times for checking emails, and set limits on your social media scrolling.

2. Look for the opportunities: Grab a pen and paper and write out your average day, hour by hour, in a bullet point format. What do you do each hour from the time you get up to the time you go to bed. Then go back through the day and look for windows of opportunities for things like getting out for a walk, listening to a podcast/ online course, brainstorming ideas, implementing existing ideas/tasks… generally things that take you closer to your goals. You may need to extend the day (get up earlier or go to bed later) or you may be able to identify lots of little opportunities throughout the day… everyone’s day is different.

3. Batch similar tasks: Group similar tasks together and tackle them at the

same time. For example, set a specific time for replying to emails, making phone calls, or doing must-do admin tasks. This approach can help you streamline your activities and save time that would have been spent transitioning between different types of tasks.

4. Double up: Are there some things you could do at the same time. For example, if you don’t want to sacrifice your exercise time, but you want to do an online course or educate yourself in a certain area with some podcasts, could you do both at the same time and do your walking or workout while you watch/listen?

5. Learn to say no: It’s important to prioritise your time and commitments. Learn to say no to additional tasks or requests that will not align with your goals or add value to your day. By setting boundaries, you can protect your time and avoid overcommitting yourself and being pulled away from the things you want to focus on.

By implementing these simple strategies, you can create more time in your day to focus on things that will take you closer to your goals.

Finding more time doesn’t necessarily mean adding more hours to your day but instead optimising the time you have to make the most of it.

The BOX12 project at the Oak Park Active Living Centre was delivered by Alliance Leisure through the UK Leisure Framework, owned by Denbighshire Leisure Ltd.

Step one – provide an exceptional experience

Ireland’s first power-assisted exercise hub opens

HILDEGARDE Naughton T.D., Minister of State with responsibility for Public Health and Wellbeing, has officially opened Ireland’s first power-assisted exercise studio.

She joined local politicians, members of the Mayo Sports Partnership and the public at Castle Leisure Club in Castlebar, Co. Mayo, home of the inaugural Hello Good Life Health and Wellbeing Hub.

The new facility will help the over 50s and those with impacted mobility issues to adopt a holistic approach to wellbeing using power-assisted exercise for physical, mental and social benefits.

“I am really pleased to see this new facility officially open; ready to provide lots of opportunities for people to take part in physical activity, which is essential for maintaining our health and wellbeing,” Hildegarde said.

“While this is true for all sectors of the population, it is especially important for older adults. When people come together to take part in an activity, they are benefitting from meeting and spending time with others, as well as from the activity itself.

“A hearty congratulations to all involved in getting this fantastic project

over the line.”

Government urged to deploy physical activity sector urgently to help save NHS and economy

Farrar, chair of ukactive and former CEO of the NHS Confederation, has called on the Government to deploy the physical activity sector urgently to help save the NHS and tackle the UK’s pandemic of poor health and sluggish economy.

Speaking at the Active Uprising conference in Westminster, he warned Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Labour leader Keir Starmer there would be “no growth without health” and that any future government must make physical activity a central part of its health and economic strategies.

Mike said: “We are currently losing the battle for the nation’s health, but it doesn’t have to be this way.

“I’m today calling on our party leaders, as a matter of urgency, to deploy the physical activity sector to help save the NHS and turbocharge the economy.

“The road to a better NHS, a healthier workforce and a happier Britain lies at the heart of every community – in our nation’s gyms, swimming pools and leisure centres.

“Physical activity is one of our best weapons in the battle with sickness and disease. The evidence is irrefutable – put physical activity in your strategy.”

A quarter (25.8 per cent) of the population in England is classed as inactive (averaging less than 30 minutes of exercise a week).

Mike’s message came as ukactive revealed new findings from its Consumer Engagement Polling with Savanta, showing that more than a fifth (21 per cent) of people with a health condition would rather receive support for their condition in a gym or leisure facility over a hospital setting.

The figure rises to 34 per cent of 16-to-34-year-olds. The conditions include cancer, mental health conditions, diabetes and kidney conditions, musculoskeletal conditions, respiratory diseases, digestive diseases, cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders, skin and subcutaneous disease and sense organ diseases.

Follow-up polling by Active Insight was carried out to understand what appeals to people about getting support for a health condition in a gym or leisure centre rather than a hospital setting.

Suggestions from the consumer panel included that:

n It does not involve being in a clinical setting (21 per cent)

n It is a more comfortable environment (19 per cent)

n It is a less daunting environment (17 per cent)

n It is easier to travel to the gym, ie distance/convenience of location (16 per cent)

n I can try out other activities within the facility that could help me (14 per cent)

n It involves being around other people who are motivated to be active and healthy (13 per cent)

Mike urged the Government to harness such demand, not only to help people improve their health and wellbeing, but also to reduce pressure on the NHS and improve the health of the workforce to boost the economy.

Ill health among the working age population costs the Government £150bn a year, a rise of 60 per cent over the past six years.

More than 7.71 million people are currently awaiting treatment on the NHS and over 35.2 million working days have been lost in 2022-23 due to selfreported work-related ill health or injury, underlining the urgency for solutions.

Mike said that addressing the UK’s underlying poor health must be national priority for Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer as they seek to form the next Government, and that they must create the right operating landscape for growth across all parts of sector – including for public, private and independent operators. He listed the required levers for growth of the sector, including tax and regulatory measures in the shape of VAT relief and business rate reform for fitness and leisure operators; expanding the Cycle to Work scheme to cover gym memberships and fitness equipment; and a plan for the reform of public sector leisure, to safeguard the future of community facilities.

Physical activity helps prevent 20 chronic conditions, including type two diabetes, obesity, heart disease, many types of cancer, MSK conditions, depression and anxiety, and dementia – generating more than £4.1billion in healthcare savings every year.

There are a number of programmes already offered by physical activity and leisure operators that support people with many of these conditions and show the potential of the sector to be able to directly support the NHS.

XCELERATE Gyms opens family-focused fitness facility

XCELERATE Gyms has opened its latest family-focused fitness facility in the bustling community of London Fields.

Situated in one of the most popular areas of Hackney, XCELERATE Gym London Fields brings the brand’s unique family focus to the active, health-conscious community. The new gym sits in a central location just a short walk from the London Fields Rail Station.

At the heart of the gym is the large studio, designed to enable all members – including younger X-Nation members – to maximise their training with bespoke and exclusively designed fitness and

combat sports classes.

Since opening, the gym has been

All members at XCELERATE Gym London Fields will have access to award-winning X-NATION combat sports, martial arts and kids classes led by sport-specific coaches and experts.

New fitness studio opens in Kensington

A NEW fitness destination, Studio FIX, has opened its doors on High Street Kensington, offering three studios with six different class concepts.

The spacious 7,500 sq ft studio is one of the first locations in London to offer Lagree Megaformer classes, a patented exercise machine that offers a highintensity, total-body workout while being low-impact – loved by many celebrities.

Other class concepts include Yoga, boxing, HIIT style conditioning and strength-based lift classes – offering something for all levels and fitness goals

guaranteeing a holistic experience in one place, without the need for multiple gym memberships. Furthermore, Studio Fix’s boxing classes are adaptable to wheelchair users ensuring inclusivity.

Prioritising upper body strength, the class provides a unique experience where able and disabled individuals can train together. Founded by Najeeb Abunahl, the new concept was born out of necessity and a personal passion to cater for all fitness levels and abilities.

After a quad biking accident left Najeeb temporarily in a wheelchair, he was advised by professionals that losing

weight was his best chance at recovery.

When looking for a fitness studio, Najeeb struggled to find accessible gyms with adaptive training for the wheelchair users, leading to the opening of London’s newest state of the art wellness destination where classes are fully adaptable, unlike many other gyms.

Designed by WGB Architects, Studio Fix’s interior attributes enhance the experience by using sustainable materials where possible.

The inspiration behind the modern and minimalist space plays on the distinction of light and dark areas,

allowing the space to exhibit shadows and tonal hues that create contrasting effects dependent on class programmes throughout the studio, in turn influencing mental and physical fitness.

Luxury changing facilities are available with leading amenities brands and a lounge offering post-workout shakes, smoothies and coffees.

Classes will vary between 45 minutes and 60 minutes depending on the class, with pay-as-you-go pricing from £25 per class, class packs from £120, and membership packages available to buy from £220.

Newly refurbished David Lloyd Fulham opens its doors

DAVID Lloyd Clubs’ Fulham Broadway Club has reopened following a £6.5million refurbishment.

Conveniently located above Fulham Broadway Underground Station on the District Line, the redeveloped 38,000 sq. ft. facility will be one of West London’s premier fitness and wellbeing destinations poised to redefine health and wellbeing in the capital.

General manager Kris Westwood said: “We are so excited to be reopening our club, and we can’t wait to welcome both old and new members back.

using marble and natural stone, accented with a bronze and neutral colour palette.

Carefully chosen plants and a bespoke lighting scheme will complete the soft and welcoming environment envisioned by the inhouse creative team.

Younger members have a dedicated DL Kids space and gaming area, plus family swim times in the indoor pool.

The luxurious Spa Retreat boasts a range of distinctive experience rooms, including a revitalising citrus steam room, serene ice cave, and a space designed to aid relaxation and rejuvenation.

The centrepiece will be the 100+

station gym, which will house David Lloyd Clubs’ cutting-edge gym concept with an array of best-in-class equipment.

Bespoke-designed group exercise studios will host more than 100 weekly classes, including the David Lloyd Club exclusive Signature Class Collection.

Members can engage in highenergy workouts such as IGN1TE, find balance in mind and body classes including SPIRIT, Pilates and yoga, pedal through exhilarating RHYTHM and CYCLONE group cycling classes, and experience the adrenaline rush from the new and exclusive HIIT class BLAZE.
