NRG Gym targets further expansion after opening its seventh facility

NRG Gym, the 24/7 gym chain, is continuing to grow its presence across the UK with a further three openings planned over the next 12 months.

It comes after NRG opened its latest gym in Newcastle last month with a 35,000+ sq ft gym floor.

The space provides members with a dedicated boxing zone, female only training zone, spin studio, Olympic lifting platforms, as well as male and female saunas.

Meanwhile, the functional training area has been kitted out with a TRX Studio Line featuring built-in anchoring, including TRX® Suspension Trainers.

The Newcastle site is one of the biggest gyms in the city and comes 11 years after NRG opened the doors to its first gym in Gravesend.

Founded by Shafiq Ahmed, a business leader with 20 years’ experience in leisure, finance and retail, NRG Gyms offer a quality member experience within a highly competitive pricing model, with a major emphasis on building strong communities, known as ‘NRG Tribes’.

It does this by uniting members who have a shared passion for their health and well-being, providing a space where they want to train and feel part of something.

Fast forward to today and NRG now operates seven gyms nationwide, with further sites in Manchester, Sheffield, Walsall, Lewisham and Watford.

Shafiq said: “Our members are at the heart of everything we do. We work hard every day, to create a positive, welcoming atmosphere within our

gyms that our members feel happy and safe in; somewhere that you want to visit and train in, and feel proud to be a part of. With changing member demands, our ability to evolve and deliver a quality experience is one of the things I’m most proud of.

“We will continue to bring NRG to more communities across the UK, whilst growing our existing gyms to create unique, game-changing fitness experiences for every member of our Tribe.”

Further enabling works at leisure centre to help deliver major refurbishment

THE next stage of enabling works at West Wickham Leisure Centre have been approved to keep the £16m refurbishment works on track in a substantial boost to the borough’s leisure provision.

Initial enabling works were completed on site over the summer to prepare for the major refurbishment of the centre, which is set to be completed in Spring 2026.

Extensive surveys by specialist teams have swiftly identified additional works that are required as part of the refurbishment, including the removal of additional asbestos that was found in the building.

This early identification helps to minimise delays by allowing required works to be coordinated within the existing programme, with additional costs remaining within the planned contingencies for the programme. Improvements to the pool, a new café, and enhanced changing rooms with showers and lockers will be provided as part of the refurbishment works.

The improved centre will also feature new exercise studios with power-assisted equipment to support with mobility and rehabilitation. New pool pods and

Changing Places facilities will also be introduced to enhance accessibility.

Councillor Yvonne Bear, Executive Councillor for Renewal, Recreation and Housing, said: “This is a necessary step towards the exciting refurbishment of this much-loved centre, which will be an incredible boost to health and wellbeing in the borough.

“These important initial stages have allowed required works to be

identified early in this process, giving us time to adjust for this and prevent major disruption to the programme.

“This is part of our largest leisure investment in a generation and we are now pressing ahead so that residents can enjoy a greatly improved centre as soon as possible.”

The further enabling works were approved by the Executive Councillor following scrutiny by the Renewal, Recreation and Housing

PDS Committee. Improvements to the West Wickham facilities and to the refurbishment of the Walnuts leisure centre are being delivered in partnership with Mytime Active.

Jason Stanton, chief executive officer at Mytime Active, the borough’s long-standing leisure provider, added: “The refurbishment of West Wickham Leisure Centre is very important to us, as we strive to provide the very best wellness offerings.

“While Mytime Active is constantly adapting to ensure we provide new opportunities, the quality of our facilities is key, so it’s wonderful to see these plans moving forward.

“While works take place, we continue to provide classes and activities in the West Wickham area and across the borough. We look forward to continuing our successful partnership with Bromley council to shape the future of West Wickham Leisure Centre.”

Specialist leisure contractor Alliance Leisure are continuing to deliver the enabling works.

The centre will remain closed throughout the refurbishment, following the discovery of structural issues earlier this year.

Freedom Leisure joins forces with fellow leisure trust 1610

FREEDOM Leisure, one of the UK’s leading trusts that manages more than 120 leisure and cultural facilities on behalf of client partners, has merged with fellow not-forprofit trust 1610 that manages four health and wellbeing centres in the West Country.

1610, although a well-established and viable leisure trust in its own right, decided to conduct a full independent review of its charitable functions. Following this process, a preferred partner was selected in Freedom Leisure.

The partnership will see 1610 becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of Freedom Leisure, giving 1610 far greater access to support and resources so that it can better support its local communities.

Ivan Horsfall Turner, Freedom Leisure’s CEO said: “We are delighted to be entering this partnership with 1610, and we are looking forward to sharing our experiences and best practices and providing 1610 with improved economies of scale so they can continue to deliver the high-quality products and services in the West Country to the benefit of the local community.

“It was important for us to align with an organisation that shares our mission of “improving lives through leisure” and we are looking forward to working in partnership in a collaborative way with a forward thinking and progressive genuine not-for-profit leisure trust like ourselves.

“We are acutely aware of the challenges leisure trusts have

faced in recent years but we have managed to navigate the complexities of the current economic climate with prudence and strategic planning.

“Our astute financial management has enabled us to maintain stability whilst continuing to invest in the long-term future of our centres and the products and services we provide and it is our hope that

Advertiser’s announcement

1610 and other leisure trusts facing the same complex decisions on their futures can benefit from this approach.”

The new partnership will see 1610 continue to trade in its own right. It will very much be business as usual across the four leisure centres currently operated by 1610.

The staff at sites across 1610 will remain the same, as will the many exciting and popular programmes and activities.

1610 chief executive Ricky Hayes added: “We are really excited to join forces with Freedom Leisure, who share many of our values and our ethos.

“My colleagues at 1610 have worked incredibly hard over the last 12 months to improve the service 1610 provide and drive community output but we are also well aware that we cannot stand still and need to evolve so that we can continue to deliver the best possible service to our communities.

“With many shared values and certainly a shared vision we really believe that by working with Freedom Leisure we can achieve more.

10 proven strategies for success

IN THE competitive world of fitness and wellness, attracting and retaining gym members can be challenging.

With numerous options available, it’s crucial to implement effective strategies to stand out and drive membership sales.

Here are some proven tips to help you boost your gym membership sales and build a thriving fitness community:

Understand your target audience

Before diving into sales tactics, it’s essential to understand your target audience. Are you catering to beginners, seasoned athletes, or a specific demographic such as seniors or busy professionals? Conduct market research to identify their needs, preferences, and pain points. Tailoring your sales approach to address these specifics will make your offers more appealing.

Highlight unique selling points

Differentiate your gym from the competition by highlighting what makes it unique. Whether it’s stateof-the-art equipment, specialised classes, or exceptional trainers, make sure your USPs are prominently featured in all marketing materials. Create compelling messaging

around these strengths to capture potential members’ interest.

Offer limited-time promotions

Limited-time promotions create a sense of urgency and can be a powerful tool for driving sales. Consider offering discounts on membership fees, free trials, or additional perks like personal training sessions for those who sign up within a specific timeframe. Promote these offers through various channels, including social media, email marketing, and in-gym advertising.

social proof

Social proof is a potent motivator.

Showcase testimonials from satisfied members, before-and-after success stories, and reviews on your website and social media. Featuring real-life examples of how your gym has positively impacted individuals can build trust and encourage new members to join.

Implement referral programmes

Encourage your current members to refer friends and family by implementing a referral program. Offer incentives such as free membership months, discounts, or other rewards for successful referrals. This not only helps in gaining new members but also fosters a sense of community among existing ones.

Utilise digital marketing

In the digital age, having a strong online presence is crucial. Use social media platforms, search engine optimization (SEO), and targeted online advertising to reach potential members. Share engaging content such as workout tips, success stories, and behind-the-scenes looks at your gym to capture interest and drive traffic.

Focus on customer service

Exceptional customer service can

set your gym apart. Train your staff to be attentive, approachable, and responsive to member inquiries and concerns. Personalised attention and support can create a positive experience that encourages potential members to sign up and existing members to remain loyal.

Host events and workshops

Organise events, workshops, and fitness challenges to engage both current and potential members. These activities provide opportunities for people to experience your gym’s community and offerings first-hand. They can also serve as a platform for introducing special membership offers and promotions.

Conclusion

Boosting gym membership sales requires a combination of understanding your audience, leveraging unique selling points, and employing effective marketing strategies. By focusing on creating a compelling and positive experience, utilising promotional tactics, and continuously adapting to market trends, you can increase your gym’s membership base and build a thriving fitness community.

Communities come together to celebrate National Fitness Day

THOUSANDS of gyms, pools, leisure centres, sports clubs, schools, workplaces and other providers across the UK held free events to help more people get moving and try something new on National Fitness Day.

The celebrations kicked off at the London Aquatics Centre, with Everyone Active hosting a rejuvenate class and a family diving session for the local community.

The children were joined by Team GB weightlifter Emily Campbell and GB Paralympics swimmer Maisie Summers-Newton, who answered questions about their experiences at Paris 2024 and the role of physical activity in their own lives.

Maisie said: “It doesn’t matter how old you are or what your ability, physical activity is such an important thing for everyone to be able to enjoy and benefit from.

“I was inspired to be an athlete by watching the stars at London 2012 but more than my gold medals, it’s the enjoyment and the way being active makes me feel that is important to me.

“National Fitness Day is a great time to get started, try something

new or get back to being more active in a way that you enjoy.”

Emily added: “National Fitness Day is our chance to shine a light on the importance of physical activity, as well as our nation’s brilliant gyms, pools and leisure centres that support people every day to be active in whatever way works for them.

“For me, it’s all about celebrating movement and I know how important it is for people to take that first step so they can find what they enjoy and create that habit for a healthy life.

“My message is to forget the stereotypes, you are stronger than you think so get involved today and try something new for your own

happiness and health.”

About 250 miles north, BBC Morning Live visited GLL’s West Denton Leisure Centre in Newcastle, where Dr Ranj Singh and ukactive’s professor Greg Whyte OBE discussed the importance of physical activity for rehab and prehab, before demonstrating some exercises with the help of gym member Denise.

As Greg explained to the audience, there were thousands of free activities to take advantage of in facilities all over the UK.

Sports Minister Steph Peacock MP supported the day by hitting the gym, and Health Minister Andrew Gwynne MP joined primary school pupils getting active in Milton Keynes. The day was powered by ukactive’s partners and members across the private, public and independent sectors, who held local events, activities and competitions to amplify this year’s theme of ‘Your Health is for Life’.

With a clear focus on the nation’s physical and mental health, the campaign was supported by men’s mental health charity, Movember, and reward platform, Endurance Zone.

How gym owners are managing cash flow

IN TODAY’S fitness industry, asset finance has become a go-to solution for gym owner operators, especially independents, looking to manage cash flow without draining their reserves.

With traditional finance becoming harder to access— credit is often too expensive or comes with terms that are just too tough—more and more SMEs are turning to asset finance to keep their businesses running smoothly.

In fact, the use of asset finance in the fitness industry shot up by nearly 10 per cent in July 2024 compared to the previous year.

Gym owners are using this flexible funding option to maintain or improve their cash flow. Here are the three main ways we’ve seen gym owners take advantage of asset finance solutions:

1. Upgrading equipment

At Johnson Reed, we’ve seen a surge in gym owners upgrading their facilities, particularly as they gear up for the New Year rush.

Q4 is always a busy time in the fitness world, and having top-tier, modern equipment can make all the difference.

Not least the peace of mind and low to zero maintenance costs that a manufacturer’s warranty

affords.

With equipment finance, you can access the latest and greatest in fitness technology without putting a huge dent in your cash reserves.

By spreading the cost over time with flexible terms, gym owners can invest in state-of-the-art kit while keeping their cash reserves.

2. Deploying capital

With interest rates holding steady at five per cent, borrowing costs remain high, and gyms are feeling

the pinch.

To maintain their financial stability, many owners are turning to refinancing options.

This strategy, known as “sale and lease back,” allows gyms to release cash tied up in existing assets, boosting cash flow without compromising day-to-day operations.

Refinancing has become a popular move for gym owners, PT studios, and franchisees, all of whom are dealing with rising operational costs.

By unlocking equity from their assets, they can inject muchneeded working capital back into the business, positioning themselves for future growth while staying financially stable in uncertain times.

3. Staying liquid

Whether it’s for essential business assets or extras like vehicles for their executive team, many gym owners prefer to lease or hire purchase.

With fixed monthly payments that aren’t impacted by rising interest rates, this allows the equipment to pay for itself through increased revenue or a drop in costs and often produces an immediate return on investment.

Staying liquid is critical for businesses facing economic uncertainty, and hire purchase fixed term agreements provide a manageable, predictable way to pay for assets over time, freeing up cash for other business priorities.

How to drive gym revenue during off-peak hours

IT CAN be frustrating if your gym is always at full capacity in the evenings, but much quieter during the day.

It’s not necessarily a reflection on your gym, but more a symptom of your members’ lifestyles.

What if we told you there were strategies you could use to get people through the door during those quieter times of the day?

With a bit of creativity, you can turn those slow hours into profitable ones.

Here’s how.

Run time-based discounts and packages

In the past, we’ve always recommended focusing on simplicity and avoiding offering your members too many options when it comes to memberships. However, one of the easiest ways to attract more members during off-peak hours is to offer an off-peak membership or class pass for those quieter times of the day.

Consider who might benefit from a Midday Membership or Early Bird pass at a lower rate for members who use the gym during less busy times. You can also promote day passes or short-term memberships specifically targeted at people who prefer to work out when the gym is quieter, or simply

because it suits their lifestyle better; remote workers, shift workers, stay-at-home parents etc.

Host specialised classes and workshops

Off-peak hours are the perfect time to experiment with new class offerings or workshops that cater to more niche interests. Whether it’s yoga, strength training, or nutrition workshops, these types of classes can attract new members and tap into different target audiences.

For example, you could introduce a mid-morning stress-relief yoga session. If you start getting regular attendees, offer them a better-value membership that offers a lower rate in exchange for long-term commitment.

Corporate wellness programmes

Many local businesses are willing

to invest in their employees’ well-being. Partner with local companies to offer corporate wellness programs that allow employees to access your gym during off-peak hours, such as on lunch breaks, early mornings and so on. This not only fills your gym during quieter times but also builds long-term partnerships with local businesses.

Use your gym for non-fitness events

During off-peak hours, your facility can be used for more than just workouts. Consider hosting community events, workshops, or even local business networking sessions. This diversifies your revenue stream and brings a new audience to the gym that you otherwise may not have reached.

You could host a wellness seminar during your gym’s slower hours, featuring local small businesses and wellness experts that complement physical fitness; mindfulness coaches, nutrition coaches etc.

You can charge a small fee for vendor booths and offer special offers on memberships to attendees.

Use the time to work on the business

During off-peak hours, gym owners and managers have a valuable opportunity to step back and work on the business rather than in it. Use this free time to evaluate your gym’s operations,

assess member feedback, review your marketing and generally fine-tune elements of the gym that often get overlooked during busy hours.

It’s also a great time for staff development. Host team meetings, run training sessions, or share ideas on how you can improve the gym going forward.

Focusing on these behindthe-scenes tasks during quieter periods ensures that your gym is running efficiently and is set up for long-term growth.

To summarise, off-peak hours should be seen as an opportunity, not a frustration. Get creative with how you target specific demographics and how others can use your gym in new ways. That way, you can drive revenue and increase member engagement even during your gym’s quieter hours. Remember, a proactive approach to off-peak hours can set your gym apart from the competition and keep your business thriving year-round.

Fitness First becomes first chain to offer members full range of HealthHero’s whole health services

FITNESS First is asserting its position within the holistic wellness space, becoming the first UK gym chain to launch four of HealthHero’s services as part of its premium membership.

The partnership will see Fitness First premium members gain access to HealthHero’s GPs, physios, dietitians and mental health counsellors, streamlining the process of getting medical and wellbeing advice to support members’ whole health, and reinventing what the typical gym membership includes.

As gyms look to expand their offering beyond being a place for people to look after their physical health, Fitness First is positioning itself as the gym of choice for consumers seeking membership services that encompass preventative and wellness options.

Justin Musgrove, CEO of Fitness First, said “We’ve talked for a long time about the fitness industry stepping up and doing more to support the holistic health of its members and we feel our new premium membership does just this.

“By being the first to add this suite of HealthHero’s services, we feel we’re creating an accessible

route for our members to access support typically reserved for expensive private healthcare cover.”

Concerns about waiting times continue to grow, particularly as some GPs begin working to rule and capping appointments, leading to the role of gyms in

providing holistic health support and relieving pressure on the NHS becoming ever more important.

With unlimited access to a full spectrum of wellness services at their fingertips, Fitness First members will now be able to book remote GP appointments between 8am and 10pm, 364 days a year.

Advertiser’s announcement

Consultations with physiotherapists, dietitians and mental health counsellors will also be available.

Alongside access to these services, Fitness First’s premium membership will also include unlimited body analysis sessions powered by Evolt, allowing members to better track their progress, as well as two guest passes per month and earlier class booking options.

Sanjay Chada, strategic partnerships director at HealthHero, added “We’re delighted to be working with Fitness First to provide access to healthcare designed to support members’ whole health.

“Our partnership is a huge step forward in changing the scope of gyms as a holistic health provider.

“Our services are designed to be delivered at scale, so fitness operators are the perfect partner for us.

“With Fitness First’s expertise, we are excited to be moving the industry forward with a true 360 wellness offering.”

Fitness First’s premium membership launches recently and is available as a £10 supplementary fee to membership with no contractual commitment.

Building strong connections with your client as a personal trainer

BUILDING a sense of community

is crucial in the health and fitness industry, and is something that’s talked about a lot, particularly in gyms and group fitness settings. It fosters connection, accountability, and motivation, which are key for long-term success.

As a PT, the one-to-one nature of training can make creating a sense of community more challenging.

However, with the right strategies, it’s possible to build strong connections within your client base. Here are some of the ways I’ve done this in my own business:

1. Offering 2:1 sessions

Pairing clients together for 2:1 sessions allows them to enjoy the personal attention of a private session while also benefitting from the camaraderie of a workout partner. Many clients have formed lasting friendships this way, and it adds an extra layer of motivation and support to their training.

2. Monthly classes with a social element I hold a monthly group class for

my clients that ends with a relaxed social session over herbal tea. This provides clients with an opportunity to meet each other and share their fitness experiences. I also stream the class for my online clients, ensuring they too can participate and feel part of the wider community.

3. Group walk-and-talk sessions I organise group walk-and-talk sessions where clients can engage in

light exercise while having a chat. These sessions allow clients to connect and form deeper relationships in a less formal setting. I also invite clients to bring a friend/family member…many of which have gone on to become clients too.

4. Running challenges via my app I run fitness challenges through my app, where all clients access their programmes etc, bringing together both in-person and online clients. These challenges encourage friendly competition and are a fun way for clients to connect while achieving points based on programme adherence.

5. Creating a branded merchandise range Branded merchandise, like hoodies, helps to establish a sense of identity within the community.

When clients wear the same branded gear, they feel part of something bigger.

6. Mini retreats I also organise mini fitness retreats, combining workouts with wellness activities such as yoga, meditation,

Advertiser’s announcement

and healthy meals.

These retreats offer clients the chance to bond and engage in a more relaxed environment.

7. Running small group sessions

In addition to one-to-one training, I run small group sessions of up to four or five people.

This setup allows clients to experience personalised training within a supportive group dynamic, building camaraderie while maintaining the benefits of tailored coaching.

By implementing these strategies, I’ve successfully fostered a sense of belonging within my personal training business.

This connection not only keeps clients engaged and motivated but also leads to stronger results and long-term success.

It’s been amazing seeing the friendships that have formed.

Ultimately, it’s about creating a community where clients feel supported, both in fitness and their personal growth.

Social media strategy drives membership boom

JUVENATE Health & Leisure, located within the Leonardo Royal Hotel in Cheltenham, has recently experienced a remarkable surge in membership, thanks to an innovative marketing campaign spearheaded by Creative Fitness Marketing.

This campaign capitalised on the power of authentic social media content and community-focused events, setting it apart from the heavily branded and corporate-style advertisements typically used by large gyms and franchises.

Authentic social media content – a game changer

In today’s digital age, consumers are increasingly drawn to content that feels genuine and relatable.

CFM recognised this shift and tailored their strategy for Juvenate Health & Leisure accordingly.

Rather than relying on overly polished, corporate-branded advertisements, the campaign focused on authentic content featuring real members and staff.

This approach resonated deeply with the local community, creating a sense of connection and trust that traditional advertising often lacks. By utilising platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and the partner network, CFM was able to craft ads that didn’t feel like ads.

The content was designed to blend seamlessly with the everyday social

media experience, making it more likely to engage viewers.

This strategy was particularly effective in attracting local members who were seeking a health and leisure facility with a strong community feel.

Creating a buzz with community events

In addition to a robust social media presence, the campaign also leveraged community events to generate excitement and draw in potential members.

These events were designed to create a buzz in Cheltenham, offering attendees a taste of what Juvenate Health & Leisure has to

offer.

With incentives like giveaways and freebies, the events provided a “carrot” to entice people to visit the club and explore its facilities. These events not only increased foot traffic but also helped to solidify the club’s presence within the local community.

By offering something of value and creating memorable experiences, CFM ensured that potential members had a positive association with Juvenate from the outset.

Impressive results

The campaign’s results speak for themselves. Over the course of just

seven weeks, Juvenate Health & Leisure Cheltenham welcomed 301 new members. The immediate cash influx from these new sign-ups was more than £8,000, with an additional £3,666 increase in net monthly membership income.

These figures demonstrate the effectiveness of CFM’s approach, which combined authentic social media content with engaging community events.

A new standard in fitness marketing

Juvenate Health & Leisure

Cheltenham’s recent success highlights a broader trend in the fitness industry: the move away from impersonal, corporate-style advertising towards more authentic, community-oriented marketing. By focusing on what people truly want to see—real experiences from real people—CFM has set a new standard for how health clubs can attract and retain members.

As the campaign at Juvenate Health & Leisure Cheltenham shows, this approach not only drives immediate results but also fosters long-term loyalty among members.

The club is now positioned as a welcoming, community-driven space where members feel valued and connected.

Veterans given discounted use of centres

OLDHAM Council has teamed up with charitable trust Oldham Active (Oldham Community Leisure) to provide local veterans with special discounted membership to its five wellbeing centres.

The special memberships will give Oldham’s veterans access to a wide range of activities, including more than 150 group exercise classes, state-of-the-art gyms, racket sport courts, swimming and sauna facilities at Oldham Active’s centres in Oldham, Failsworth, Chadderton, Saddleworth and Royton.

While Oldham Active has always offered discounted memberships to local veterans, support from the council now enables them to offer even greater discounts, plus two months completely free.

Stuart Lockwood, chief executive of Oldham Active, said: “We believe every veteran in the Oldham area deserves the opportunity to enhance their health and wellbeing.

“We have around 6,000 regular or reserve armed forces veterans living in Oldham and are honoured to contribute to their support.

“Our veterans have given so much in service to our country, and we are committed to giving back to them. We understand that physical activity can be a powerful tool for improving both emotional and physical health, and we are dedicated to helping

them on that journey.

“As a charitable trust, we are passionate about offering health and wellbeing opportunities to everyone in our community.

“In addition to supporting our veterans, we proudly provide a variety of discounted memberships and pay and play opportunities for carers, care leavers, young people, students, people living with disabilities, people on benefits,

those over the age of 65 and elite athletes, ensuring that all members of our community can benefit.”

Stuart Lockwood, Oldham Council Leader, Arooj Shah, Cabinet Member for Thriving Communities and Culture, Peter Dean, and Councillor Ken Rustidge, the council’s Armed Forces Champion, have been learning how veterans, including Gareth Bryer, have found coming to the gym beneficial to their

wellbeing.

Gareth, 42, who served in the Royal Engineers, added: “I really enjoyed being in the Army, and the buzz of being deployed around the world.

“However, after eight years service it was important for me to spend more time with my family. It can be tricky to transition back to civilian life, as when you are in the Army discipline is obviously key, and this includes physical activity and training every day.

“When you leave, that is suddenly taken away from you. I really value coming to Saddleworth Pool and Leisure Centre and train here most days, using the gym, pool, sauna and group exercise classes, including HIIT and Core. It has helped to ease me back to ‘normal’ life.

“After I retired from the Army, I retrained to work in health and safety and often work from home, which can be quite isolating.

“Coming to the gym gives me that opportunity for social interaction and routine. It is really sociable here. I have good chat with the regulars and have met other veterans here too.

“Being active not only helps me to keep fit, but also helps with my overall emotional wellbeing. I would recommend the discounted membership to other veterans in the area. If I can do it, so can they.”

Clubbercise celebrates award win and debut at the International Fitness Summit in Ibiza

FITNESS phenomenon

Clubbercise had plenty to celebrate in September.

Firstly, they were invited to host Clubbercise and their new Combat+Tone workout at the International Fitness Summit, held in Ibiza from September 13 to 15.

It’s the first time the brand has featured at the event, which also included world-class speakers

like James Smith, Paul Olima, Sean Casey, Chloe Madeley, and Jay Alderton.

Then, Clubbercise received another award to add to their growing collection, after being crowned Best Dance Based Workout at the British Fitness Awards, which were held on September 14 in Liverpool.

Born in the UK in 2013 there are

now thousands of people taking regular Clubbercise classes all over the world.

All of their workouts are set to a soundtrack of club anthems from the 90s to the latest chart hits and taught in a darkened room. Participants use Clubbercise trademark glow sticks to add to the nightclub atmosphere.

Clubbercise founder Claire

Burlison said: “This year just keeps getting better and better.

“We’re expanding into new markets with Combat+Tone and to receive another award for our original dance-based workout is a real bonus”

Scheme is ‘godsend’ for Stockport gran Sharon battling cancer

A GRANDMOTHER who has been forced to sell her house to fund cancer treatment says Life Leisure’s GP referral scheme has been an unexpected lifeline.

Sharon Goddard from Marple was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in March 2023.

She and her husband Steve are in the process of selling their home to fund specialist treatment in the UK and Germany, but Sharon says the membership with Life Leisure in Stockport, funded through the Physical Activity Referral in Stockport scheme, has been a ‘godsend’ in helping her manage the debilitating disease.

She said: “The PARiS scheme has been an absolute godsend. I don’t think of myself dying of cancer, I’m living with it, and this scheme and the support I’ve received from Life Leisure has been fantastic at helping me do that.

“It lifts me up mentally, there are people here who I now genuinely consider my friends. The staff at Stockport Sports Village are always friendly, helpful and welcoming. I look around and see other people who are also struggling. We lift each other up. The equipment is first rate and there is even an infra-red sauna, which is especially helpful to people with cancer.

“Physically I feel better for going. I’m not lifting heavy weights or running on a treadmill, but under the guidance of my instructor Dave it’s really making a difference. He even gave me some exercises to do at home as well.

“It really is a lifeline. Dave is very supportive and encourages me. I’ve done a lot of research and believe

building up muscle can really help me live with this cancer longer. This is all about getting my life back and Life Leisure is helping me do that.”

The PARiS scheme is a partnership between Life Leisure and Stockport GPs who refer patients for a programme of physical rehabilitation. Patients benefit from a reduced membership and classes with qualified instructors who adapt their sessions according to the participants’ abilities. Sharon attends the PARiS gym sessions at Stockport Sports Village in Woodley after being referred by her GP.

Dave McGlinchy, who is a  specialist physical activity coordinator at Life Leisure, added: “I love working with all my clients on the PARiS scheme. I’ve met so many people with varying levels of medical conditions.

“Any help I can provide to them in

becoming fitter, stronger and better able to navigate life is extremely rewarding.”

Sharon, who is a grandmother of five with a sixth on the way, is receiving care at The Christie in Manchester, but has reached the limits of what conventional treatments under the NHS can offer and has chosen to explore alternative treatments here and in Europe.

The sale of her eco home – which she built with husband Steve for their retirement – along with donations through a Go Fund Me page set up by her son Christopher, have helped ease the financial burden.

She added: “I could never have afforded a gym membership but it’s doing me the world of good and I wouldn’t want to be without it now.

“I would recommend it to anyone

who is struggling to manage their illness and would benefit from moving more. I think about what it has done for me, but the people on the scheme I’ve met are all inspirational with their own stories too.”

Sharon was diagnosed with suspected ovarian cancer in March 2023 by her GP.

She said: “My treatment began with three gruelling rounds of chemotherapy followed by major abdominal surgery in July, followed by more chemotherapy.

“The chemo treatment at The Christie was so debilitating it left me with bad side-effects, both mentally and physically. I just couldn’t have done it again. So, we decided to put everything we had into getting targeted chemotherapy in Germany which is also very tough but unlike the NHS treatment only targets the tumours themselves and not the whole body.”

The Go Fund Me page has helped support the cost of Sharon’s treatment, which has also included intravenous vitamin C therapy and hiring a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, which has been particularly helpful in managing the symptoms.

Sharon added: “It feels like it’s working for me, but it’s all very expensive, that’s why Christopher set up the Go Fund Me account.  I know there are people much worse off than me but people wanted to help, and it’s what I’ve had to do to survive. I can’t tell you how grateful I am to all the people who have supported me, even people at the gym who have put money into my fund. It makes a huge difference towards giving me quality of life.”

TOTAL CORE CRUNCH MACHINE

The Total Core Crunch Machine Panatta is a unique and innovative machine that allows, in a single workstation, to reproduce the main movements for training abdominal muscles such as crunches, reverse crunches and sit ups, with the extra possibility of adding trunk rotation. The selection of the type of exercise is done by simply moving a pin, which goes to modify the complex kinematic system with which the machine is equipped, so as to include or exclude from the movement the different functional parts of it, which, as a result, determine which parts of the body remain fixed and which don’t. Compared to performing classic abdominal exercises, using the Total Core Crunch Machine has the following advantages:

n Physiological resistance curve, modulated by the progressive lever system;

n Overload level customisable to the user’s training level, from beginner (due to the spring counterbalance system that reduces the unloaded weight) to advanced.

The three possible working configurations on the Total Core Crunch Machine are:

UPPER ABDOMINAL

Keeping the insertion stationary, with the hip fixed, the movement of upper trunk flexion not only involves in its entirety the rectus abdominis (having fibers with a totally vertical course), but also sensitively stimulates the anterior-superior fibers of the internal oblique; overall, the upper part of the abdominal muscles are more stimulated.

LOWER ABDOMINAL

Keeping the origin (ribs and xiphoid process) fixed this time, it is the pubis that moves toward the sternum with a hip flexion; again, the action mainly involves the rectus abdominis in its entirety, while differs in the action of the internal oblique, which mainly uses its lower fibers. Overall, there is a greater stimulus on the lower part of the abdominal core muscles.

TOTAL CRUNCH

Is the sum of the previous two movements, consists of the simultaneous flexion of the trunk and hips, which stimulates the rectus abdominis and internal oblique in the totality of their fibers which mainly uses its lower fibers. Overall, there is a greater stimulus on the lower part of the abdominal core muscles.

As anticipated earlier, the Total Core Crunch Machine allows you to perform all the movements seen above with the torso in a rotated position (on two angles per side), while also effectively activating the external oblique.
