NOTHING beats the warm and fuzzy feeling that comes with achievement apart from this… Crossing the finish line, setting a new record, reaching a new distance for more than just your personal sense of accomplishment. When you’re working towards something that has the interests or benefits of someone else intricately linked to everything you do, that’s a whole new level of accountability and enthusiasm bolted on for good measure. For the second year running, members of the Myzone staff and community joined forces with Team True Spirit to take on the Lakeland 50 – 50 miles through the Lake District with a time limit of 24Teamhours.True Spirit is a UK registered charity which helps British military veterans, injured or made ill serving our country, to uncover their true determination, defiance and cast-iron motivation to achieve their goal of crossing the finish line of an endurance sports event. Whether it’s a MEP challenge, an event or distance target, or just an out and out fundraising opportunity, having that shared goal of raising money for great causes in addition to all the good stuff that comes with movement in itself is an absolute game changer. It will keep your people moving more, as there’s a bigger payoff for more people when they succeed; it will get more people talking about the impact you’re having in the community, and it will forge new connections to add to a network of positivity, support, empathy, encouragement and achievement for years to come. These are relationships that last. Your community is your strength in joining forces with other people that could really benefit from not only your knowledge and services, but your network and compassion. We’re all on a mission to get more people more active more often, but while we’re at it let’s get twice the effect from every effort by finding ways to create additional value that’s so much more than the sum of its parts. Challenge yourself and your members, reap the rewards of success and raise as much money and awareness for other causes that make the difference while you’re at it. CUSTOMER research is a crucial task when opening up a Itgym.allows you to get to the heart of what your members want, allowing you to serve them better. You can use customer research data to guide your positioning in the fitness industry as well as set prices and help determine your offering in the first instance. However, many clubs glaze over customer research in favour of more exciting steps like ordering equipment.  If customer research isn’t something you’ve actively done before, it’s never too late to start. We’re sharing our advice on how you can get started with your research and how to use your findings to grow your new venture.

The online joining process enables you to ask new members where they heard about your club and automatically generates a report on the different marketing sources, so there’s no extra work for you to complete.

From here you could decide to expand your car park to make your club more accessible to your members; improving their experience.

To give you an example, ClubRight offers several different features that allow you to conduct, store and analyse customer data effectively.

Now it’s time to decide which tools you’re going to use to complete your research.

Customer research should be completed regularly, usually once a year. But if your CRM offers automatically generated reports, you could run them monthly since it’s no additional work on your part. Doing so will allow you to plan more successfully for the future and adapt faster to changing spending habits.

You’ll need a secure CRM that allows you to collect and store your research data, as well as something that allows you to analyse the information you’ve collected.

You can also use the communication tools –automated email, text and push notifications – to engage with your customers and learn more about them. You can also use the Activity Attendance report to establish which of your activities are most popular, giving you a deeper understanding of your customers’ buying habits.

The first step in conducting customer research at your club is to determine what you’d like to learn from it. Are you wanting to gain further insight into your customer demographics? Perhaps you want to learn more about your members’ buying habits? You can even use customer research to pinpoint new opportunities for growth so that you can stay ahead of the rising costs we’re all experiencing at theAnothermoment. powerful aspect of customer research is being able to confirm where your members found out about you; was it on social media? Through word of mouth? Getting clear on your most effective marketing channels allows you to invest more time and money into them, helping to grow your membership base.

The final step in customer research is to act on your findings. It’s easy to get lost in the data and focus too heavily on organising your new-found knowledge, but you need to come up with actionable next steps that lead to operational improvements.

What do you want to learn from your research?

Think increased growth, improved efficiency and greater retention.

UK FITNESS SCENE 5 Price sensitivity research shows impact of increasing gym membership fees

The results, which can be broken down into regions, age and gender, make for interesting reading.

NEW research from Leisure-net Solutions shows the impact of potential increases in membership fees on customers across the UK. Many operators are considering raising prices to alleviate the burden of rising costs, but are worried about damaging customer relationships.Leisure-net’s independent research highlights how sensitive customers are to price increases, allowing operators to tailor their price changes to avoid losing members.DavidMonkhouse, director of Leisure-net Solutions, said: “Operators are seeing a big squeeze on their income with increasing costs and Sport England’s Moving Communities platform showing an 80 per cent return to leisure facilities after the pandemic.“Thisnew price sensitivity research shows how much operators can increase their membership by before they start to lose customers. “It can be tailored to regions and gym types to allow operators to make informed decisions on possible price increases to help them navigate these challenging times.” The findings are based on the responses of 400 members of leisure centres, mid-range clubs, budget clubs and independent gyms, who were asked how sensitive they would be to membership increases of five, 10, 15 and 20 per cent, via Leisurenet’s new 65,000 plus Consumer Insight Panel.

The survey found that 40 per cent of independent gym members would be prepared to pay up to 20 per cent more for their membership. It’s a different picture in Scotland, where nearly half of independent gym members (47 per cent) would not tolerate an increase in membership dues. When it comes to leisure centres, a quarter of members living in London said they would be prepared to see their fees increase by 20 per cent. By contrast, 63 per cent of leisure centre members in Wales would not pay any more for their membership.

For example, younger men at independent gyms are most likely to accept price rises, while older women at leisure centres are least acceptable to increased costs.

The reason your gym isn’t using Orbit4 … yet

THE key word here is “yet.” Already hundreds of gym operators are becoming sophisticated and making better data-driven decisions after launching Orbit4 in their facilities. The only people not using it are those that haven’t found out about it yet.Count this as your tip off – most gyms don’t track cost of ownership of their expensive fitness assets. Orbit4 does all of that for you while making your operations more efficient and EBITDA much stronger.

CEO of Orbit4, Daniel Jones, understand businesses need to tighten their belts more than ever and start making serious saving without cutting quality for their customers.Hesaid:“The gyms that get ahead are those already thinking through the true cost of ownership of their assets, not just purchasing, but finance, asset management and disposal of commercial fitness equipment.“Beingsmarter and making decisions using data is 100 per cent the right approach. There are many benefits of Orbit4 and it isn’t just about saving some money. It’s about better due diligence, streamlining operations and changing the mindset of longer-term procurement processes.”Whenproducts reach the best time to trade-in and buy new, the connected ecosystem auto-populates each quadrant within the dashboard with real-time quotations from suppliers, service providers and traders.Thissmart, data-driven tech is saving gyms thousands, plus hours of early-stage procurement every year for the industry.

www.matrixfitness.co.uk

It’s the first digital ecosystem that fully automates the entire commercial fitness equipment journey. For the first time ever, gym operators can use a bespoke asset management system that also automates procurement processes for the future – all data driven via historic asset behaviour and cost of ownership.

Chris Porrino, area sales manager at Matrix Fitness UK, said: “Live Active have significantly invested to better the facilities for the local community and they have provided an elite-level training space that is second to none in the area. “We have enjoyed working with them to bring this project to life, and look forward to seeing its continued success in the future.”

Just like the car market, people like to know the value of their assets so they know what money they have for their next purchase or perhaps budget for other internal improvements like new flooring and decoration for the gym. In Orbit4, the WeBuyGymEquipment quadrant does this too - it provides an accurate residual value of the gyms existing assets at any time during the asset cycle. Live Active Leisure’s activity programming and fitness manager Graeme Lackie said: “This was a vast project, and one that was not only designed to cater for the health and fitness needs of the local community, but offer something different for those looking to take their training up a gear and even attract the highest level of athlete.”Theinstall is a perfect match of equipment, with the latest from Matrix Fitness Performance and Endurance series paired with total connectivity thanks to the Touch XL, Touch and Premium LED consoles which give interactive access to all whilst providing easy read touch screen use whereGraemerequired.added “We have also incorporated the Matrix Fitness Sprint 8 and Virtual Active console features, as well as the MX4 and MX4 Active group exercise programming into our timetable so that we can elevate our group exercise offering.

The cost is only £45 per month or £500 per year. Orbit4 could save an average size gym around £24,500 over a five-year period. More for bigger gyms. Help your gym to stand out from competitors

WE ALL know there are gyms and health clubs all over the place–and, at their core, they all offer essentially the same thing: a place to work out and improve physical health. With so much variety among competitors, it can be challenging to figure out how to attract potential clients and retain your existing ones. To remain competitive, it’s important to stand out rather than to fit in. So, what can you do to differentiate your gym from competitors? In this issue, we bring you the first two of our four ways you can make your gym shine and stand out amongst your competitors.

The experience you provide is what makes your gym unique, and it’s what attracts people to your products or services over your competitors. Providing a great member experience gives you a competitive edge, and it’s critical to creating a positive association with your brand, and building a community of loyal, engaged members.

Online training and on-demand classes were perfect solutions for fitness businesses trying to stay afloat and generate new income streams during worldwide lockdowns and forced business closures caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. In fact, online training became so popular during the pandemic that it secured the number one spot in ACSM’s 2021 fitness trends report. The demand for digital and hybrid fitness options isn’t going away any timeManysoon.members have grown accustomed to the flexibility, and they still want the option to go to the gym a few days a week, or to get their workouts done at home. To stay competitive in 2022, fitness businesses should continue to focus on expanding, improving, and marketing online fitness offerings. Consumers now expect a hybrid combination of in-person and online workout options, and they want to be able to research, book services, and communicate with brands easily. COURSES claiming to provide certified personal trainer qualifications overnight have been around for a long time. For aspiring fitness professionals, it can be easy to get fooled. After all, many of these websites look legitimate and claim that their programmes will allow you to work with clients in mainstream fitness facilities.Toindustry experts, quality education is easy to spot. But the problem is that many people looking for a personal training qualification can’t spot the difference between a good quality course and a badPost-pandemic,one. there has been a rise in low-cost, low-quality training options.Manyof these cheap, quick options have no requirement to ever interact with a real client and there is a very limited amount of support and guidance provided to effectively progress individuals through their training programme. Inexperienced people with low quality personal training “certificates” are then faced with a diverse range of clients who they are ill-equipped to help and coach.

This is a major issue which is an industry problem and one we must tackle together. Low quality education erodes the credibility of the entire industry and is also a health risk for people who have limited experience to train people with a broad range of needs. What can learners look for to ensure a wise investment? Look for a regulated training programme with Active IQ accredited providers. We only work with training providers who can demonstrate certain levels of competence and quality. We ensure that all staff members associated with delivery and assessment hold appropriate qualifications to do so and we don’t work with anyone who doesn’t meet our minimum standards. Once a centre is approved, they get a wide range of support from Active IQ, including continuing quality assurance visits and guidance, business strategy support, customer service support and high-quality resources for the centre and their learners.Itisimportant to note that online learning does not always mean lowquality. Many digital tools and resources, when they are part of a wellconstructed quality education provision, are very credible and beneficial to the learner. What’s important is choosing regulated qualifications with a training provider that works with a wellrecognised and trusted awarding organisation.Thisiswhat will give aspiring fitness professionals a quality qualification and in turn, the skills needed to be job-ready for the industry and to excel in their new career. Active IQ invests significantly in educational resources that support the quality provision of training providers, to ensure the best possible experience for the learner. This is the reason we exist. When learners get world-class education from high quality training providers, everyoneProvidersbenefits.getmore business. PTs get more clients and ultimately, more people get fit and healthy.

Why quick, cheap personal trainer courses put fitness industry at risk

By talking to their members and potential members, Slimming World discovered people wanted to get more active and wanted support to do that, with guidance that was clear and easy to follow, good fun, able to fit around even the busiest of lifestyles and, crucially, inclusive – something everyone could take part in. So that’s exactly what we’ve created together. The Slimming World videos on their members’ website and app, are – like their programme – designed to be inclusive and appeal to everyone, no matter their age, ability or lifestyle.

Visit most clubs and the programmes assume a certain level of physical ability, not even addressing emotional barriers.

IN RECENT years the sector has begun to address the need to welcome everyone, no matter what their level of fitness or ability, but it still faces a number of challenges.

It’s no wonder that consumers of online fitness praise the inclusive nature of the content frequently being created in comparison to in person training.

The advocacy for movement and physical activity has never been more important, with one in four people in the UK doing fewer than 30 minutes of physical activity a week. The World Health Organisation states that 60 per cent of adults in Europe are now overweight or obese and that 1.2 million people will die prematurely due to obesity each year. Here, David Langridge, managing director of fitness content specialist 1FitLife, discusses how inclusive the leisure sector really is.

Learnings from online training Exercising at home enables people to feel safe and to rest/stop without judgment – allowing an individual’s confidence to grow at their own pace and to hopefully encourage them to one day feel comfortable and able to access other types of physical activity.Ibelieve leisure operators must now follow suit, offering a more positive, inclusive and holistic approach to physical activity. Simple changes, in and out of clubs, can make a big difference to those that struggle with low self-esteem and little physical ability and mobility. For example, group exercise classes must offer seated modifications; newto-exercise customers need a clear, welcoming induction programme to help them feel confident in an unknown, alien space; clearly written group exercise class descriptions will also help, as well as the introduction of shorter sessions for those that struggle or are new to exercise. Simple changes could make the world of difference for this hard-toreach group, helping them to reap untold benefits.

For example, if someone is unable to stand during classes or needs additional support to balance, is there something readily available for them to hold on to? Are seated options given as a standard choice? Plus, by their very nature, a group experience can be intimidating for someone feeling apprehensive or fearful.Areclasses created with those lacking physical and emotional confidence, who most often need our support, in mind?

We’ve been working with leading weight-management organisation,

The Government’s guideline of 150 minutes of activity a week is so far removed from some people’s real-life experiences that it can feel unachievable, and instead of being motivational, leaves people feeling beaten before they’ve even started.

It recognises a wide range of movement and active habits, right from every day choices, such as sitting still less and taking stairs instead of lifts, all while praising and celebrating the member for every milestone they achieve.

They’re all filmed with two friendly and encouraging instructors, one seated and one standing, and there are five, 10, 15 and 30 minute workouts.Thevideos vary from dance and cardio to balance and flexibility and strength building, and from gentle, getting-started options to more intense workouts. This summer, Slimming World is giving access to one of the videos for free, allowing an even larger audience to rethink what exercise might be.

Slimming World, to produce online exercise content to complement their Body Magic physical activity programme.Launchedin 2003, it’s a totally tailorable support programme that’s been developed in collaboration with behaviour change experts and designed to fit in with the Government’s recommendations for physical activity.

UK FITNESS SCENE22

Is the fitness industry in need of a shake up to help those most in need?

All activity has value Increasingly at 1FitLife we are seeing a shift in the type of digital workouts our clients want to create; with a softer, gentler, more holistic approach. This, tome, is a positive change.

For instance, how many understand the emotional barriers that might be stopping individuals from getting started when it comes to being physically active? Past negative experiences, lack of confidence and straight-up fear can all stand in the way of someone accessing physical activity.

Too many operators shut the door on potential new customers by not providing the facilities, inductions, modifications and equipment for some people to comfortably access physical activity. Group exercise, especially, doesn’t cater for everyone, be that due to injury, disability, size/weight, health conditions or level of fitness.

Bitesize approach

It supports Slimming World’s members to get active from their own personal starting point, even if they don’t do any exercise at all, and to build active habits at their own pace.

David Langridge

Slimming World aims to help members understand the benefits being physically active brings and to break down personal barriers that may be stopping them from getting going. A lot of organisations could learn from their example.

The leisure sector must have the ability to meet people where they are. It’s essential to appreciate that all activity, however small, has value; some is better than none.

MADE IN BRITAIN

The Core Gym Equipment brand was established in 2014 out of a passion for a better gym experience, through strength, aesthetics, and commitment. We are a company of forward-thinking individuals that team up to offer great products that we strive to improve daily. We pride ourselves on building high-quality hand-built strength equipment and settle for nothing less than the best we can offer the fitness industry.

OUR MISSION

Advertiser’s announcement

Rachel Palfreman, sales manager at PSLT, said there had been a number of snags in the fit-out process, but the work has now been completed. “We took out a lot of their existing equipment, remanufactured it and put it back as good as new,” she added.

ONE of the UK’s biggest personalities and a top dog in the body building scene have formed a partnership to open a new gym. The last of the Core equipment by PSLT was installed earlier this month at Muscle Base Gym in Enfield – spearheaded by Big Narstie and Jeffrey Darko. The former is one of the most well-known faces in the UK – and the 36-year-old MC, author, rapper and television presenter has found himself more in the public eye in the last few years, even hosting his own show on Channel Four. Whilst Jeffrey is a top body builder with the International Federation of BodyBuilding and Fitness (IFBB PRO) and has five pro placings.

THE CORE STORY

REQUIREDSHOWSITESNOW

Our mission is to provide products that stand the test of time and offer an enjoyable, confident workout experience. We promise nothing less than to pour our passion into creating functional equipment with the build quality that will be with you for the long haul.

The CBD recovery gym and fitness centre, based on Alma Road, is North London’s premier muscle and toning facility. It’s fitted out with cardio and resistance machines, weights, punch bags, a sauna, boxing ring and a steam room - as well as much more. The site is home to some of the country’s top athletes who have access to all the equipment. It welcomes people of all levels - it doesn’t matter if you’re new to the gym or a fitness regular. The minute you walk into the gym you see the attractively coloured resistance machines which help people to build and tone muscles. Whilst the large free weights section also provides users the freedom to work out individual muscles.

The main benefits are optimal tension over the entire ROM guaranteed by the CAM and greater safety compared to the use of free weights such as dumbbells and barbells. The wide footplate with anti-slip treatment and several adjustments of the machine make the Standing Total Arms suitable to adapt to users of all sizes.

There is instantaneous switch from biceps to triceps or vice-versa, this makes the Standing Total Arms not only versatile in general, but also irreplaceable when training arms in super sets, without the need to change equipment or station as is the case with free weights or other strength kit.

Starting with the handle from the upper position the push-down is simulated with straight or angled bar, that similarly to the previous case, allows two type of grips: wide grip with the hands perfectly prone or a medium/narrow grip with the hands in a semi-prone position. Even in this last case, the two angled positions minimise forcing on the elbow joint while still ensuring optimal muscular stimulation.

Starting with the handle from the lower position, the biceps curl with EZ bar is simulated; the grip can be: n wide, with hands in perfect supine position; n medium or narrow with the hands in semi-supine position, so to avoid forcing on the elbow joints. Among the different grips, the wide straight grip and the medium angled grip allow to slightly flex the shoulder after the elbow has been fully flexed, thus leading to a greater peak of muscle contraction.

Advertiser’s announcement

Can PTs help with the mental health crisis?

IN THE aftermath of the pandemic, it comes as no surprise that mental health has shot up in priority for many people. While awareness has been growing over the last decade, the actual impact of poor mental health was something many people had no firsthand experience with. The pandemic changed that. Anxiety and depression became a public health crisis brought on through months of uncertainty felt by people the world over. Global prevalence of anxiety and depression has increased by 25 per cent since the beginning of the pandemic and according to the World Health Organisation, depression and anxiety cost the global economy US$1trillion each year.

Exercise and physical activity has long been prescribed as the antidote to poor mental health and today, there is a huge increase in new gym members who are turning to the nation’s fitness facilities with mental health as their number one goal. Of course, PTs and fitness instructors are skilled at coaching someone through a bench press or squat, but can they recognise and help someone struggling with a mental health issue? Do they have the skills needed to coach and instruct someone struggling with anxiety, low mood or depression? And,evenif they do, is it the place of the fitness professional to intervene or should this be left to medical professionals? Lianne Clark, business development manager at Active IQ, will be tackling these questions head on in her talk at Tomorrow’s Workout in Bristol in September.“Feedback coming out of the Evolve Conference in June confirmed what we thought for some time,” said Lianne.“Operators told us that one of the highest reasons for people joining their facility post-Covid was to improve their mental health.”

The largest industry audit delivered by The Leisure Database has been completed for the first time since 2019. Trends and insights are reported through the State of the UK Fitness Industry Report visit www.leisuredb.com to buy a copy of the latest report

.

Off the back of this insight, Lianne followed up with operators to determine if their workforce had the practical skills required to support gym members through mental health challenges.Theunanimous answer was no. They neither had the skills nor the confidence to recognise or support mental health issues despite this being one of the key reasons people go to a gym. “One challenge facing the industry is that many operators do not think it is their place to address mental health,” added Lianne. “But the reality is that they are actually perfectly placed to do this and that’s something our Level 2 Mental Health Qualification can help with. “We have several providers offering this qualification to people-facing staff and the response has been extraordinary.“Theskillsthat people gain through this qualification are not only necessary to support today’s gym members but potentially lifesaving as well.” To book your free place at the upcoming event go to tomorrows-workout.co.uk/https://Clark

Health club gets 250 new members during health awareness campaign

To find out if your club is suitable for a CFM campaign, check out www.cfm.net or call Jonny or Harry on 0115 777 3333.

Over the last few years, many sub contract work has been taken on by larger service companies resulting in poor quality reupholstering due to lack of experience.

Full Pad Manufacturing

WE manufacture full pad replacements for nationwide health clubs, ensuring highquality, longer-lasting products, offering a better alternative to re-upholstering existing deteriorated padding. The increased demand for better quality, longer lasting products with a higher focus on hygiene in the current climate has forced us to reassess and extensively restructure our manufacturing process to keep up with the service demand.

He said: “The reason we achieve a high sale to appointment ratio (over 85 per cent) which is significantly better than industry averages is due to the streamlined process we’ve created. “We know the importance of striking while the iron is hot and getting prospects down to the club as soon as they have engaged with an advert. “We build up the value of the membership with a strategically designed e-mail before the prospect even walks through the door. “We focus on building rapport during qualifying phone calls and club“Buttours.most importantly, our empathy-based sales approach means we work together with the prospect to show how the club can help them achieve their goals.

As well as the extra 250 new members who joined on the health awareness campaign offer, the club’s regular membership sales also increased by more than 40 per cent due to the flow on effect of the marketing coverage. Club manager Liam added: “We chose CFM because of their proven track record and referrals from other clubs. I would 100 per cent recommend using CFM as they are very professional and they get the job done.”Thebest thing CFM is they don’t charge their clients upfront, and they work on a commission only basis, so there is no risk for the gym.

“We touch on how exercise stimulates your mental health and physical well-being, instead of using pushy sales tactics that only creates revenue and doesn’t educate the community within the facility.”

CFM has a rich history that is centred around the benefits of exercise and the impact it can make on the local communities they work in. Dan Leworthy, one of the sales consultants for the campaign, provides some insight into why CFM campaigns are so successful.

IF YOU’RE looking to increase the members in your gym or health club, then you might like to read on. Juvenate Health and Fitness Inverness recently completed a membership drive campaign which brought in some fantastic results and now the clubs membership base is at an all-time high. So how did they do it?

The success of the campaign came down to an integrated marketing and sales approach with a core focus on ‘selling with empathy’. This 360-degree approach began with multi-faceted marketing including graphic design, videography, digital and print marketing right through to a streamlined sales process. The campaign was designed and carried out by agency Creative Fitness Marketing over a period of seven weeks. CFM managed the health awareness campaign at the club and provided two expert fitness sales consultants who were responsible for greeting, touring and signing up the new members.

THE team at Taylor Made Designs is celebrating the outstanding talents of team member, Cathy Wood. Cathy has been crowned ‘employee of the month’ for her outstanding ability to pivot her role from role dealing with client queries and back order issues to being entirely focused on working with our suppliers and managing stock orders to ensure ongoing import challenges , faced by all companies importing goods from overseas, have minimal impact on our customer experience.“SinceBrexit and the pandemic, the import and supply of goods continue to be disrupted, with lead times on deliveries from overseas often uncertain”, said James Taylor, managing director, Taylor Made Designs. “We are actively taking measures to absorb any issues through increasing the level of stock we hold in the UK and adjusting roles and responsibilities of our team to ensure the customer experience is always protected.

“We have been serving the leisure sector for almost 30 years and have a portfolio of long-standing customers who rely on us to deliver uniform and merchandise, quickly and efficiently. It is always our goal to deliver against this.

“This month, Cathy has really stepped up to the plate.
