The awards, organised by Script Events in partnership with Workout and headline sponsor ServiceSport, recognise excellence and achievement in all corners of the fitness industry. And with over 20 categories up for grabs, there’s something to suit every type of gym and trainer. National Fitness Awards’ director Judith Halkerston said: “Thanks to everyone who has entered the awards already – we’ve had a great response so far with nominations arriving daily. And the standard is outstanding with a great mix of operators of all sizes – many familiar names and lots of newcomers to the NFAs. “We’re extremely proud that the National Fitness Awards are for every club – our awards are free to enter and our judging criteria means that it’s not down to the size of your facility but how you run it! There’s still time

to enter so get working on your nomination – and one of our judging panel could be visiting you very soon.” Trophies will be handed out at a glittering ceremony on Friday December 1 at the Athena in Leicester where the industry’s best will gather for a fun filled night and our 2017 worthy winners will be revealed. The event will be hosted by presenter, fitness expert and Wonder Woman Amazon Jenny Pacey and renowned personal trainer and fitness expert Dean Hodgkin and plans are already in progress to make it the biggest and best National Fitness Awards yet. Event organiser Lucy Dickinson added: “I can’t wait for this year’s National Fitness Awards! “We’re aiming for it to be bigger and better than any other year and plans are already well underway. “The level of dedication towards the industry shown through nominations we have received so far is really uplifting.” n Nominations can be submitted via www.nationalfitnessawards. co.uk where you can also find more details of this year’s categories and criteria for entering. Industry veteran Pete vows to keep fighting after accident By Christina Eccles A FITNESS industry veteran has vowed to keep fighting following a life changing accident which has left him in desperate need of major reconstructive surgery. Former UKactive board member and gym manager Pete Todd was involved in a serious motorcycle crash at the Nurburgring in Germany on his 50th birthday four years ago, which left him in a coma with life threatening injuries Following two failed major chest surgeries and multiple emergency hospital admissions, Pete has been left with a severely deformed and collapsed left rib cage which is now only a third of its normal size. In constant, severe pain, and after months of extensive research, Pete’s best chance of returning to a better quality of life is surgery to rebuild and stabilise his collapsed chest cavity. However, the Neo Rib Reconstruction is not available in the UK, meaning his only hope is to raise enough money to fund the surgery himself, which would involve travelling to France where

the President of the Society of Cardio Thoracic Surgeons is willing and able to perform the procedure. To help him reach his £50,000 target, Pete has set up a funding page and after working in leisure for many years, he is hoping he can count on the support of his fitness industry friends. He said: “From the outside its extremely difficult to see how severely damaged I am internally and I’ve suffered with severe depression and constant agonising pain no amount of drugs and opiods can alleviate. “Exercise is the best medicine bar none for your overall wellbeing and for so many medical conditions. However I’m trapped in my own body and have now exhausted all medical options in the UK. “I need to take control of my own destiny and the only way I can do that is to finance surgery myself.” Donations can be made via Pete’s fundraising page – http://www. gofundme.com/msg42y-petesperfect-storm – with the money raised being used to fund the surgery, travel, accommodation, rehabilitation and aftercare he needs.

“I have classed the leisure and fitness industry as my family for my whole life, so words can’t describe how much it would mean to get their support.”

He added: “This surgery is the starting point of me rebuilding my life. “I have classed the leisure and fitness industry as my family for my whole life, so words can’t describe how much it would mean to get their

support. “Setting up the page has given me a real purpose. What better purpose is there than trying to fight for your own survival and quality of life? “It’s been horrific. But I will keep fighting until my last breath.” Advertising

Developer bolsters senior team ahead of major growth

Almost 200 runners took part in Barnsley Hospital Charity’s annual Rainbow Dash around Locke Park. Participants found themselves pelted with different coloured powder paints by ‘rainbow warriors’ as they completed one lap of the park or a 5k stretch to raise money for the hospital. Runners include the hospital’s chief executive Richard Jenkins and his family. Barnsley Hospital Charity’s fundraising co-ordinator Lisa Calvert said: “We’re overwhelmed with the support we received and the enthusiasm from everyone on the day. The whole event couldn’t have gone better and we can’t wait to find out how much we’ve raised.”

Alliance Leisure has also introduced three new business development managers; Ruth Doyle, Will Gardner, and Gillian Dunster. James Foley said: “In order to continue to meet the needs of our growing portfolio of public sector clients and achieve our ambitious business growth objectives, it has become necessary to expand the senior team. “Our aim is always to promote from within where possible so I am really pleased that we have been able to offer new challenges to our existing, loyal and dedicated team members. “I am excited to welcome the newcomers, all of whom I have no doubt will add huge value and experience. These are indeed exciting times and I am really looking forward to seeing what we can achieve together over the next few months.”

Platform connects users with coaches and clubs

By Christina Eccles

A NEW marketplace for sports and fitness has launched to help users connect with like-minded people, coaches and facilities. From their phones, SPRYT enables users to find the nearest teams, facilities, instructors and players across 80 sports and fitness activities; from Pilates to MMA to tennis. Co-founder Paul Lyes said: “When I initially moved to London from South Africa, I wanted to continue playing cricket, but without knowing people I found it difficult to get involved. “I ended up joining a cricket club miles from my home purely because one of my friends was already a member. “If SPRYT had been around at the time, I would have been able to use one website to easily identify and

contact one of the four cricket clubs within a mile of my home.” SPRYT enables users to choose from a range of sports and activities while the list of 100,000 clubs, coaches and venues can target a database of potential members and clients relevant to their services. The two-way marketplace gives coaches and users control over who they connect with, encouraging connectivity. Paul added: “Living a healthy and active lifestyle is top of the UK government’s agenda at the moment with nationwide initiatives such as Active10 and This Girl Can campaign implemented with the purpose of getting people active and healthy regardless of shape, size and ability. “SPRYT is the platform that can assist both the user and venue in achieving this aim.”

Charity HIIT raises £500 PERSONAL trainer Stephanie Guest raised over £500 for the Alzheimer’s Society by organising a charity park workout. The hour-long HIIT session, in Cudworth Park near Barnsley, was attended by 15 adults and three children, with Stephanie also organising a raffle of prizes donated from local businesses to boost funds. She said: “This charity is close to my heart as my 91-year-old grandma is currently suffering with dementia and I wanted to give something back to the charity that has supported us as a

family through my grandma’s journey so far. “I decided to raise awareness within my local community about Alzheimer’s and how keeping physically active can improve both physical and mental health. “I was overwhelmed by the support and generosity during the organisation of the event and on the day. “It was great to see people of all ages working out together, laughing and smiling whilst raising so much money for charity.”

Jenny gets experience of a lifetime as she wins a role in blockbuster By Christina Eccles PRESENTER and fitness expert Jenny Pacey got the experience of a lifetime when she won a role in the recent blockbuster Wonder Woman film. Jenny got a taste of the Hollywood lifestyle when she was chosen to play an Amazon warrior, following an intensive audition and training process, which lasted for several months. Successfully making the final group of 20 warriors saw her film in three locations in Italy for four weeks, where her background as a former Olympian, TV Gladiator and fitness professional made her perfect to take on the physically demanding role. day, putting on 10lbs of muscle and also learning new skills such as choreography for the film’s fight scenes was all part of the process, with Jenny and the other warrior women all bringing their own strengths and talents to the part. She added: “It was nice to see different people’s approaches to fitness, for example, the dancers picked up the fight choreography really easily. “It was good to compare and celebrate each others’ differences and strengths.” Something Jenny particularly enjoyed about the experience was the chance to be a part of something which features such strong, fit female characters and a message which empowers and inspires other women worldwide. She added: “Not many actors get the chance to be part of the blockbuster of the year. “The hype around the production was phenomenal. [The cast included] a mixture of incredible, strong, powerful, intelligent ladies; from a Victoria’s Secret model to a Swedish champion fighter to dancers and gymnasts. It was an incredible experience being part of such an iconic film.”

Former boxer who beat drug habit hopes to help others A FORMER professional boxer who beat a drug habit has turned his life around and now hopes to do the same for others. Daniel Baugh started Functional Health and Fitness Barnsley last October, with the aim of driving down antisocial behaviour by taking in teenagers from the local community and teaching them to box. Daniel admits that he was once going down ‘the wrong path’ but feels boxing was always there for him and helped him through the tough times. Now he uses his gym, personal training and sports massage business to fund community projects and help others. He said: “I came from a boxing background, but I went down the wrong path. I didn’t get into too much trouble but I went down the road of drugs. I got to the point when I was 29 and I thought ‘what am I doing with my life?’ “I sold everything I had at that point for my education. When everything has gone wrong, boxing has always been there for me.” Daniel, a former boxer, damaged his eardrum 12 months ago which put an end to his professional career. With the help of boxing coach Trevor Schofield of Barnsley Star Boxing Gym, he has turned his life

around and used his skills to set up his new venture, ploughing nearly £23,000 of his own money into the business to buy equipment. He works up to 90 hours a week and has only had two days off since opening in October. Having studied anger management and training to become a professional trainer, Daniel says he is able to help young people from all walks of life to better understand their emotions and control their behaviour. He added: “If you can get kids in the gym at six years old you can give them a bit of discipline and direction. “They can’t box until they are eight, but you can teach them boxercise and build that discipline. “We want to let them join in and be part of a community. I have said to all of them that if I have the money in the bank and they want to turn professional, I will help them. “That’s something I would love to do, just give someone that chance and that start in life. It’s not about going to bus stations and causing trouble. A lot of kids these days are misled.” In a bid to create a community feel to his gym, Daniel has organised a number of trips for adults who use his gym and hosts a barbecue on the last Sunday of each month when the

Advertiser’s announcement

Fitness Systems kits out global finance company’s new gym GLOBAL specialist finance company, Falcon Group, provide both mid-cap companies and large corporations with tailored and flexible finance options to enhance growth. Historically active in the Middle East and Asia, the privately-owned company has recently expanded its client base around the globe, including Australia, Hong Kong and Africa. Their London team recently relocated to a new office space on Lombard Street. The Grade II listed venue was previously dilapidated and has undergone a significant restoration. The six-storey building now serves as office space; home to Falcon Group’s London team and their newly-installed corporate gym. As a progressive company with employee wellbeing at the core of their successful operation, providing a top-of-the-range fitness facility for staff was high on the agenda. Falcon Group approached Elaine Coulthard, an experienced fitness industry consultant, to ensure the gym reflected the needs of employees and integrated seamlessly with the building’s original art deco character and contemporary fit out. Having opened over 80 clubs worldwide, more than half of which with Fitness Systems of Bolton, the choice of supplier was obvious for Elaine. She said: “Fitness Systems are always my first choice of supplier, as I know I will be guaranteed a great service. “No matter how big the facility I am working with, they always ensure a smooth installation and share my high standards and expectations.”

Working with the right partners is essential to ensure each project is completed to the best of its ability, and Elaine also introduced the services of trusted partner, Johnson Reed Fitness Finance, to ensure there was no financial barrier between Falcon Group and their desired gym facility. Elaine envisioned an open-environment with a diverse range of equipment to cater to every demographic and type of training. Unlike the segregated layout found with many gym and fitness spaces, Falcon were keen to integrate the different types of equipment to create designated areas for training routines and classes. Optimising the limited space was also a key consideration; providing enough equipment and variety without over-crowding the facility. The use of True Fitness cardio was key, with

intelligent engineering ensuring maximum durability and a more economical, quality product. The gym was also kitted out with Fitness Systems’ own brand of Force strength equipment, offering users a comprehensive fitness experience and a full body workout! The cardio and strength equipment were acquired through a lease agreement with Johnson Reed, who worked closely with all parties to ensure a seamless process in conjunction with tight deadlines. By opting to lease, Falcon were able to purchase their desired equipment from Fitness Systems without affecting vital cash reserves during their busy relocation period. The agreement minimised the upfront cost, and spreads the remainder over tax-efficient fixed repayments.

Improving mindset and building up confidence helps Dean gain results

A National Fitness Award winning facility is doing its bit for a local sports club by sponsoring the team’s kit. It’s now the 10th year theclub, at DoubleTree by Hilton Cadbury House in Congresbury has backed Claverham Cricket Club, which plays just down the road in the ECB West of England Premier Cricket League, Bristol and Somerset Division. Group director at theclub, Jason Eaton, said: “We love getting involved in the local community and sponsoring nearby organisations is the perfect way to show our support. Claverham Cricket Club has a fantastic set up and we’re delighted to help out.”

Challenge raises £7,000 EXERCISE group members who challenged themselves to ride the equivalent of London to Paris on exercise bikes and rowing machines have raised more than £7,000 in the process. Barnsley Long Term Exercise Heart Support Group simulated rowing and cycling the 240-mile route in 13 teams, each of five members from across Barnsley, at the group’s meetings in Royston.

The event also attracted a generous donation of £2,500 from the West Stand Bogs, a community trust which supports Barnsley businesses and charities through the sale of the Barnsley FC fanzine. Steve Plunkett, from the group, said: “This has been our first fundraising event and a great success thanks to the kindest of friends and families and the West Stand Bogs. We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone.”

A PERSONAL trainer who specialises in working with older adults and those with health conditions is achieving great results by focusing on improving mindset and building confidence. Dean Smith contacted Workout after reading about PTs Laura and Barry Ash who called on the industry to focus more on clients’ mental health than physical to help them reach their long term goals. 52 year old Dean, whose business Syner-Chi:Fitness is based at Busybodies Gym in Essex, works with a range of clients from 20 years old right up to the oldest at 86. And he has seen success stories from people of all ages. He explained: “Most of my clients have specific medical issues. Most would never venture into a gym environment, but with support and careful progression they are all changing their lives for the better. “It’s much more challenging than regular PT work, but so much more rewarding in my experience.” Dean’s method for building confidence with clients include making sure each one has a thorough consultation when they first start work with him – this can last up to two hours and ideally takes place in a

Dean with client Joe Strike. quiet, daytime gym slot – giving them an introduction to other staff and a run through typical gym terminology to break it down into more easily understood terms. He added: “There’s a huge place for personal trainers of my age and older that can relate to older clients more than youngsters can. “Some people turn up expecting to fail or not get results and they have a phobia of the gym. It’s so much about mindset before they start; they want to go to the gym but don’t feel fit enough. “I’ve had clients who were petrified. It’s so nice to then see someone who I’ve been training come in on their own and chat to people.”

An innovative class is proving popular at a West Yorkshire club; attracting both group exercise fans and those who want to improve their tennis game. Workout editor Christina Eccles tried out a session.

Thongsbridge Tennis and Fitness Club boasts a dedicated strength training facility as well as traditional tennis, with Cardio Tennis bridging the gap.

Cardio Tennis bridges gap between sport and fitness AS one of the top tennis facilities in the Yorkshire area, Thongsbridge Tennis and Fitness Club is no stranger to success. Championing tennis for all ages and abilities, the Holme Valley based club has built up a loyal membership base, thanks to its range of facilities and its family friendly, community feel. In addition to traditional tennis, the club’s offering also includes fitness classes and a dedicated strength and conditioning facility, with Cardio Tennis sessions sitting on the timetable as a popular way to bridge the gap between sport and fitness. Cardio Tennis coach Danny Sykes explained: “You don’t have to be able to play tennis and it’s for all ages. One of the main things people like is that you always have a goal at the end of each exercise – you’re chasing the ball down like you

would in a tennis match. “We have a lot of people who come simply to become fitter, but some come to use it as a way to improve as a tennis player.” With participants ranging from beginners to experienced tennis players, Danny’s task as a coach is to tailor sessions to suit all levels. He has also slightly adapted the classes to make them more representative of a real tennis match. He added: “We have changed from continuous running to more interval training, which makes it more tennis specific and more realistic. You don’t keep jogging in the middle of a match; it’s more stop/start.” Providing locals with both a fitness facility and a social hub, the well established club recently marked its centenary with a special celebration day for the whole family. Highlights included a BBQ, taster fitness sessions and sporting demonstrations, with money raised from the event going towards supporting charities and for club improvements. Danny added: “The day went very well. We were able to deliver a fun filled day that catered for everybody. “People were able to play and watch tennis, have their faces painted, do different gym classes and enjoy a BBQ. It was a great family fun day.”

Cardio Tennis coach Danny Sykes.

Class offers something a bit different from the norm SINCE leaving school PE lessons behind, the only experience I’ve had of tennis in recent years has been watching Wimbledon, while drinking Pimms and eating strawberries and cream! So to say I was out of practice would be a bit of an understatement! But despite having not even picked up a racket in years, I was excited to try Cardio Tennis and find out more about how elements of the sport could be delivered through a group fitness class. Within the group of seven taking part, I was definitely

the least experienced as the others were all regular tennis players and some of them avid attendees of Cardio Tennis. But, thankfully, it didn’t matter as for this class it’s not essential to have perfect tennis technique. What you do need to have is enthusiasm and the willingness to try something different, as it’s definitely not your typical fitness class. The drills were fun and engaging, incorporating both fitness circuits – anything from star jumps to squats – with tennis skills. And although my skills were fairly limited, I was pleased

with the fact I managed to hit most of the balls sent my way; even if a few of them looked in danger of smashing the nearest window! It also appeared to be a very sociable session. Throughout the class, all the ladies were chatting to each other and as well as working hard, it was clear to see they were having a good time. All of them meeting up in the cafe for a coffee after was also nice to see and proved that this is a facility which works hard to be a social club as well as a tennis and fitness one.

Not only was Cardio Tennis a great workout, it also has the added benefit of helping you feel like you’re learning something new. Although I’m not quite ready for my Centre Court debut yet, if I was to attend regular sessions, I can see how these classes would help to improve my fitness levels as well as my tennis, making it perfect for those who want to up their game, as well as beginners who just want to try something new. If you like your cardio fast paced and fun, this is the class for you!

Holidays create class divide

By Christina Eccles

Les Mills has teamed up with commercial property company Bruntwood to offer office workers the chance to get fit with their colleagues while at work. Bruntwood has invested in a Les Mills Virtual group exercise space within their Trafford House office building in Manchester. The ground floor of the building has recently been refurbished to offer a whole floor dedicated to social and wellness including a kitchen, hot desks, showers and break-out areas, as well as a conference room where the Les Mills Virtual classes will be streamed over lunchtime and before and after work on a large screen. The classes will be timetabled and employees who work in the building will be able to take part.

SCHOOL summer holidays are opening up a class divide between the fitness levels of deprived children and their more affluent peers, research from ukactive has revealed. The findings – which were presented at the annual Congress of the European College of Sport Science in Germany – show how the poorest 25 per cent of primary school children experience a drop in their fitness levels 18 times greater than the richest 25 per cent over the school summer holiday. The authors believe the prohibitive cost of many school holiday activities, such as summer camps, means many of the poorest children are left slumped on the sofa in front of screens, putting them at much higher risk of deadly diseases such as heart disease, cancer and type-II diabetes in later life. The findings form the second part of a landmark study from ukactive and children’s activity provider Premier Sport into physical activity among eight and nine-year-olds. The research, which tracked the cardiorespiratory fitness levels of more than 400 children in 13 schools across the North West of England over a 13-month period, was the first study of its kind to measure fitness levels both before and after the summer holidays. The fitness levels of the most deprived children fell significantly during the summer holidays

“Being inactive as a child sets a dangerous precedent on a number of levels.”

compared to their more affluent peers, meaning they were able to run far shorter distances before exhaustion in September than they could in June, while the fitness levels of the most affluent group dipped slightly but were relatively unaffected. The first research – released last year – showed how fitness levels steadily improve throughout the school year but these gains were all but wiped out due to ‘lazy summer holidays’, when activity levels plummet. The latest findings highlight the ‘dramatic’ impact of deprivation on primary schoolchildren’s fitness levels, prompting the researchers to call for a major overhaul of activity funding to curtail these health inequalities. They say the UK government’s promised £415m of Sugar Tax funding for school sport should be used to support out-of-term exercise sessions and in-school fitness measurement to ensure children maintain active lifestyles during the summer break. ukactive research director and lead author Dr Steven Mann said: “There’s

a growing class divide around fitness levels due to the summer holidays and the government must urgently address these Victorian-style health inequalities to give every child a fair chance of a healthy start in life. “Our research with Premier Sport suggests deprived children are being plonked in front of screens for hours on end, while their more affluent peers are able to maintain their fitness levels through summer camps and other activities. “Being inactive as a child sets a dangerous precedent on a number of levels. As well as being linked to impaired physical development, shorter attention span and lower grades, an inactive childhood means that person faces much higher risk of deadly diseases such as heart disease, cancer and type-II diabetes in later life.” As a result of the findings, ukactive Kids – the organisation’s dedicated children’s arm – is working to embed greater levels of activity throughout the school day and at home and will kick-start this project with a major nationwide mass workout as part of National Fitness Day on September 27. The 10 at 10 project will see 10,000 schools across the country take part in 10-minute bursts of activity at 10am in playgrounds, classrooms, school halls and open spaces, with the aim that these sessions become a mainstay of the school day and can be replicated at home during school holidays.

Operator launches partnership with gold medallist to drive hockey participation By Christina Eccles OLYMPIC gold medallist Alex Danson has joined forces with Everyone Active to introduce a new hockey scheme to primary school children. Everyone Active has launched the Alex Danson Hockey Academy, with the aim of getting more youngsters active by offering them access to fun, engaging sessions and expert coaches. Through the partnership with Alex, Everyone Active wants to get 10,000 children aged seven to 11 playing hockey over the next three years. Together they will be working to upskill the Everyone Active team to become England Hockey sessional coaches to guarantee a high-quality training experience. Alex will be closely involved in the programme and will be personally delivering regular ‘train the trainer’ sessions. Everyone Active will be launching the Alex Danson Hockey Academy into 500 primary schools and will be hosting 100 hockey camps across their centres. All Everyone Active coaches will also be qualified to upskill teachers so they can continue to deliver quality hockey sessions outside of the academy. The academy will consist of a 24-week programme, which has been

approved by England Hockey, and will use Quicksticks, a four-a-side version of the game to introduce young people to hockey. The sticks are very similar to those used in hockey, which aids progression into the game. Everyone Active’s regional director Duncan Jefford said: “The partnership forms part of our major drive towards increasing sports participation, as it continues to decline across the UK. “We firmly believe in the benefits of playing sport at a young age and will continue to diversify our offering to provide opportunities to get involved in sports which are disappearing from the school curriculum. “In addition, it is vital that we bridge the gap between participation levels of men and women in sport, and tackle the declining rate of participation in girls as they enter their teens. “Through the partnership we aim to create a life-long passion for hockey from an early age.” At a launch event in London, more than 150 children from primary schools across Westminster became some of the first to try out the academy sessions. They were led through a number of drills by Alex, who was on hand to offer expert tips and advice. She added: “The launch was the

Alex Danson with some of the youngsters from primary schools across Westminster who tried out the academy sessions at a launch event. most fantastic day; seeing so many girls and boys from a multitude of different cultures playing hockey at Paddington Recreation Ground was just incredible. “To give that many new hockey players access to the game is something I feel incredibly proud of and to be able to do it on the scale we intend thanks to the support of Everyone Active and STX Hockey is

very special. “It was a very easy decision for me to get involved as my two passions have always been hockey and getting young people involved in the game. “It is a wonderful opportunity as we know how important it is to get young people, and girls especially engaged in physical activity before the age of 11. It is something I am incredibly proud to be a part of.”

New gym lets PTs rent space by the hour A GYM has opened in central London which allows personal trainers to rent the space whenever they want and only pay per hour. PT Workspace – founded by Nathan Drury-Ellis and Nathan Khider – rents the space to personal trainers who can choose to buy a number block of sessions that will fit around the hours of their business. The sessions have no expiry date so trainers do not have to worry about losing their money and PT Workspace has a maximum trainer policy each hour to avoid overcrowding. Co-founder Nathan Drury Ellis started his personal training career working within large gym chains; finding that battling with rent fees and taking on too many clients just to hit rent was an ongoing issue. He experienced how trainers, including himself, faced high fixed monthly rent fees of over £1,000 a

month and decided to offer PTs an alternative; partnering with his client Nathan Khider to create the business. He said: “I left my gym in 2014 and haven’t looked back since. “I needed a space to train and training outside just wasn’t an option for me. “Nathan and I could see just how in demand a space was for personal trainers that didn’t charge an extortionate fee. Since opening the Islington branch many trainers from large gym chains have left to join us at PT Workspace. Independent PTs have thrived and excelled whilst growing their business in PT Workspace. “We have plans to open a second location near Farringdon and it is a long-term goal to have several PT Workspace studios all around London to help trainers from all across London train clients and build their own business.”

Yoga benefits people with age-related conditions, University’s research finds By Christina Eccles OLDER people with a range of agerelated conditions including arthritis and dementia showed physical and health related improvements after doing Yoga classes, research has found. According to a study from Northumbria University, Newcastle, doing yoga is an effective way for physically-inactive people aged over 60 years to become more mobile, while also improving their mental and social wellbeing The study – Adapted Yoga to improve physical function and health-related quality of life in physically-inactive older adults: A randomised controlled pilot trial – showed that a weekly group-based yoga programme, adapted for older adults with a broad range of agerelated diseases or disorders, can lead to improvements in physical function and mental health. The three-month research study was conducted at Yorkshire Yoga and Therapy Centre, two community centres and a care home in Harrogate, with 52 participants

ranging from 63 to 92 years of age. The British Wheel of Yoga ‘Gentle Years Yoga’ programme was first developed by charity Yorkshire Yoga in 2009 to cater specifically for the needs of older people with age-related conditions such as osteoarthritis, hypertension, dementia, and sensory impairment. Adaptations to more challenging yoga poses were developed so that older adults with physical limitations could safely participate while still reaping the health benefits of yoga. The aim of this study with

Northumbria University was to confirm these benefits among a physically-inactive ageing population. The study found the most commonly-cited physical benefits included improved mobility, for example improved chair rising, walking ability, improved flexibility and reduced pain. Cited mental health benefits included stress-relieving effects, improved mood and a reduced frequency of panic attacks. More than 70 per cent of participants said they liked the social interaction that the group exercise class provided and many said they had developed new friendships. Dr Garry Tew, who led the research from Northumbria University’s Department of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation, said: “There can be several barriers to exercise among people aged 60 or more, including personal issues such as pain and discomfort, fear of injury, and misconceptions about what’s appropriate. “This Yoga programme may be appealing because its content is

suitable for people with hip or knee replacements and long-term health conditions such as osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. “Yoga is a holistic therapy, which has the potential to produce a range of physical and mental benefits. “The apparent social benefits of this programme were also very interesting, with many participants saying they felt the classes gave them a new lease of life and made them feel less isolated.” British Wheel of Yoga chair Paul Fox added: “The British Wheel of Yoga is committed to building on this excellent research. “We are in the process of training as many yoga teachers as possible to deliver the Gentle Years Yoga programme. “Yoga can play an important role in promoting health, wellness and quality of life among older members of communities across the UK. “At a time when an ageing population is putting pressure on health and social care services, yoga can be a cost effective way of meeting this nationwide challenge.”

Fitness champion Sarah launches foundation to tackle childhood obesity

By Christina Eccles

FITNESS champion Sarah Donohue is on a mission to get more kids into healthy eating and exercise with the launch of her new foundation to tackle childhood obesity. Sarah has launched Superstars Foundation to raise awareness of fitness and nutrition among young people and get them into good habits from an early age. After already receiving backing from her local council in Stoke-on-Trent and large organisations such as Tesco, she is now looking to roll the concept out – firstly in the immediate area and then nationwide – going into schools and youth groups to deliver informative talks and practical fitness sessions. Topics will vary depending on the ages of the children involved but will have a main focus on healthy eating – showing it doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive – plus issues such as body image and how to deal with social media for the older groups. Sarah explained: “We’ve set this up because there’s a definite need – the Staffordshire area has a large number of obese children. We’ll be starting small but growing big.”

Flame winners unveiled Sarah has already been contacted by one personal trainer who is interested in getting involved and told Workout, she’s keen to hear from other fitness professionals and sports stars who could help to deliver sessions and become positive role models for the kids. Each child who attends a session will be given a goody bag, so Sarah is also looking for companies within the health and fitness sector who can help out with supplying items and offering support. She added: “Parents have to care about their child’s weight and have to set good examples. We want people to step forward who have influence in the area. I think it’s going to be brilliant. People already want to get involved and we’re going to make it a lot of fun.”

Level Four rolled out

Online programme encourages women to get strong not skinny TOP fitness presenter Rachel Holmes is encouraging women to get strong not skinny with the launch of her new Lift Lean programme. Rachel has devised the 28-day online programme to include 28 different workouts using kettlebells, dumbbells and barbells. The aim of Life Lean is not to get slimmer but stronger, fitter and more powerful; encouraging women to embrace weight training and its benefits. Rachel said: “I started weight

training at a local gym at 14 and I’ve continued to train most days ever since. “I have been called bulky, manly, masculine and too muscular many times, even though my fitness career has spanned 30 years. “I’ve trained thousands of people and, like all women, I’ve lost weight and gained weight during different phases of my life. But one thing that has always been a priority is weight training and I want to share that life long passion with more women.”

ACTIVE IQ is enabling fitness professionals to gain advanced strength and conditioning skills with the roll out of its Level Four Certificate in Strength and Conditioning. Originally developed for British Military Fitness, the course is now available to encourage personal trainers to enhance their knowledge, extend their skills and achieve differentiation from their competitors. The qualification was developed by Active IQ and British Military Fitness training arm, The BMF Academy. Managing director at BMF, Harry Sowerby, said: “This qualification was born out of a shared frustration at the lack of high quality education for the fitness industry and poor progression opportunities for personal trainers looking to get to the next level. “In partnership with Active IQ we

have created a complete package which will prepare students to become confident and highly skilled performance specialists.” Managing director at Active IQ, Jenny Patrickson, added: “We had identified a gap in the market for a well-designed strength and conditioning programme to support and develop sporting performance. “We had an excellent partner in BMF, whose experience in this field is second-to-none. Many BMF colleagues have completed the Level Four Certificate in Strength and Conditioning and we are now ready to offer this to the wider fitness market. Quite apart from enhancing a personal trainer’s skills, this qualification will give them a clear point of differentiation and help them support clients seeking strength and conditioning gains, including the increasing number of people undertaking obstacle course races and challenges.”

PT helps boxing brothers to victory in their latest fights By Christina Eccles ONE of the UK’s top personal trainers has helped two local boxers get in shape – with impressive results. National Fitness Awards’ finalist Mike Hind – owner of MAS Body Gym in Middlesbrough – was approached earlier this year by twin brothers Josh and Kalam Leather. The pair were in need of a new strength and conditioning coach and nutritionist and were impressed with the results they had seen from some of Mike’s other clients. At an initial consultation, Mike spent time evaluating their needs; asking them what they had been doing regarding training and nutrition in their past camps leading up to a fight. The boys had been told by one nutritionist they had an intolerance to carbs and their food intake was so low that during training, they would struggle to keep their energy high and stay strong as they felt so weak and tired. Mike explained what would need to be done nutrition wise if they were to work together and advised them to wear a MYZONE belt to track their workouts each day. The pair were then put through their paces in training for 10 weeks;

including workouts on the beach, strength based exercises and speed and agility sessions – with an end goal for both of them to win their fights, including a title fight ranking 15th in the world for Josh. Mike said: ‘’I’ve worked with many professional athletes within my career, but Josh and Kalam have something special. “I have never been able to push any individual to the limits we have gone with these boys.” After working with Mike to prepare themselves for the big day, Josh and Kalam headed to Leeds First Direct Arena to fight. And both of them were victorious, with Josh earning the IBF Intercontinental Champion Belt and Kalam winning his second professional fight with flying colours. Mike added: ‘’My job was to improve their strength, speed, agility and fitness and what made it special for me was witnessing the fight on the night and hearing the thousands of fans and TV commentators talk about how the mentioned areas have improved since their last fight. ‘Having both boys take a win was one of the greatest feelings in my coaching career.”

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING Resistance training offers huge health and wellbeing benefits and should be an integral component of almost any prescribed physical activity programme, yet in many gyms the offering can be intimidating and, for many – especially those new to exercise – a little scary, according to eGym’s Kerstin Obenauer. Here, she reveals how eGym technology is helping to change this.

Making strength training more accessible AS a sector, we need to breakdown these barriers and find new ways to make strength training more accessible to all. Typically, cardio equipment all looks very inviting with its bright, friendly looking displays and quick start buttons; the resistance equipment is much less intuitive and welcoming. eGym has set out to change this, encouraging engagement with a much wider user group from

beginners and competing athletes to the deconditioned and the over 50s. We have developed a unique electromagnetic resistance system which immediately negates the need for clunky, intimidating, weight stacks. Using software, resistance is automatically calculated and optimised through regular strength tests to match the fitness levels of the individual user. In addition, the user does not need

to manually adjust the equipment each time they visit, the system automatically adjusts based on individualised pre-set information. This takes the uncertainty out of the process and enables the user to focus 100 per cent on the performance of optimal movement patterns, ensuring quick and seamless progression towards goal achievement. Our strength equipment also integrates a high-quality user interface. The software is designed to provide constant feedback on technique, performance and progress workouts to create new stimulus. Finally, strength training needs to be connected to other training methods. eGym operates an open software platform and actively encourages connection with partners through its eGym ONE training programme. Currently the eGym Cloud connects digitally to the cardio equipment of Life Fitness, Matrix, Precor and Pulse Fitness, along with a selection of fitness trackers, body analysers and CRM systems. This enables both the member and gym trainers to collate all of the training data, plus review workout history and create workout plans in a single location.

Kerstin Obenauer Together, the solution is increasing the simplicity of the process and proving to break down the barriers of strength training – making it more accessible to all. n Kerstin is head of implementation at eGym UK. She has more than 20 years’ practical experience in the fitness sector and has enjoyed a successful career as an operator, personal trainer, international presenter and educator.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING

Bringing it back to basics WITH the rising number of Fitness Apps measuring all parts of your body could we be losing track on what’s really important for fitness? Such as accurate stats on muscle, fat and hydration? Monitoring Lean Muscle Mass becomes more important as we age. Strength and resistance training undoubtedly helps to maintain vital muscle but how do we know if the exercises we are repeating every week are actually gaining us the valuable muscle we need? As much as we’d like them to, your phone will not be able to tell you accurately whether you are gaining muscle in the right areas and losing the dreaded body fat. You need a specialized device to measure body composition, but in today’s age there are so many products on the market. How do you know which one to choose? I am here to explain a little about how this technology works so you can make up your own mind. Fat vs Visceral Fat Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis, also known as BIA, is the technology most of these body fat analysers follow, whether they use scales or

electrodes. This means a very weak signal or current is passed through the body. The current will then pass through different tissues which will have different resistive qualities to the current (ie fat is an insulator, ie a poor conductor, since it contains less fluid and electrolytes, so will slow down the current). The flow of the current is recorded as Impedance. These values are then read by the BIA machine which will determine the quantity of that tissue in the body. Now, the important factor to remember is that the fat is fat, and muscle is muscle. Just like you cannot differentiate between brown fat and white fat, you cannot differentiate between visceral and subcutaneous fat. All types of fats will still show the same amount of resistance to the current. Scales vs Electrodes The accuracy of BIA

measurements depends on skin resistance. When we are using a light current to measure the inside the body, the thickness of the skin and the connection to the electrode is of utmost importance. So if we consider scales for the moment, consider the thickness of the soles of your feet and palms of your hand in comparison to the thin skin on the tops of your hands and feet, used with electrodes (the sticky pads). The sweatiness and dryness of the hands and feet will also affect any electrical current when taking a BIA measurement. Bodystat has been a manufacturer of solely BIA devices for almost 30 years. They dedicate themselves to educating their customers about this technology and are determined to offer the most accurate results possible. Always offering the latest technology, Bodystat is launching a new Touch Screen device this September. So keep an eye out on their website www.bodystat.com as there will be a huge sale of current stock very soon. This could be your chance to get your body composition analyser well within budget! Futureproof your lockers THE old pound coin will cease to be legal tender on October 15 2017, after a six month period of co-circulation. For companies, this can be an expensive process, as not only will machines need to accept both currencies until October, but there will be another update required once the old pound coin is removed from circulation. Many are treating the currency switch as an opportunity to future-proof their coin-operated mechanisms. An increasing number of gyms, hotels, sports clubs and leisure centres are turning to Codelocks for keyless locking solutions that negate the need for coins altogether.

The new KL1050 KitLock, for example, is a simple, smart card lock that provides easy access to lockers, cabinets, cupboards and other enclosures. The lock can be installed easily, replacing existing cam locks and saving companies time and money. The days of coin-operated machines are numbered, as we move to an increasingly cashless society. YMCA Fylde Coast partnered with Life Fitness on the revamp of its St Annes Leisure Centre site; introducing a new suite of premium cardio and strength equipment to bring the facility up to date. New additions include the Discover SE3 Tablet Console, Cybex SPARC trainers and a SYNRGY rig – a piece of kit which has proved particularly

12 months ago, ServiceSport helped set up a temporary gym for Halo Leisure’s Ledbury Youth Centre around the corner from their base whilst it was being redeveloped. Recently, Ben and the team were back to move equipment including Star Trac Spin Bikes and Life Fitness Strength Kit to the new upstairs gym to go alongside new Matrix CV kit that was previously installed. The company’s local area engineer, Dave, was also on site to first carry out a service and fit new black upholstered pads to match the equipment. The strength machines also received a good clean inside and out by the installation team. The grand re-opening for the swimming pool was May 10. For more information visit www.servicesport.co.uk

popular. General manager Gareth Fegan explained: “The gym was five years old and needed updating. “We looked at the free weights area, which was high usage and sectioned off by screens, so we moved them to open up the space as the screens could be a bit intimidating. “We can now get 25 to 30 people in quite comfortably. We’ve also had an increase in women using this area as it’s now more open plan.” Following the refurbishment, membership sales are up by about 10

to 15 per cent, showing how well the changes have been received by the local community. Slightly tweaking the gym’s opening time from 6.45am to 6.30am has also made a difference to people who want to come in before work Gareth added: “In the previous gym, the colour scheme was a bit dated and it was looking tired. We’ve totally changed it and it’s proved really popular. “A lot of people can’t believe we haven’t had an extension in the gym – but we’ve just opened up the space.”

YMCA St Annes is now also recognised as an Official Hammer Strength Training Centre, an accolade awarded only to a handful of public sector facilities; offering members a line-up of over 15 pieces of Hammer Strength kit. Gareth added: “We’ve got a lot of YMCA sites in close proximity. Us going down the route of a specific Hammer Strength designated area has worked really well and given this gym a USP. “It’s been absolutely brilliant – a great start to the year.”

Operator evidences increased engagement with swim users By Christina Eccles

Lifeguards are honoured for saving woman’s life A TEAM of lifeguards from Western Swimming Pool who helped to save the life of a swimmer have been honoured by the Royal Life Saving Society UK. Three lifeguards from the centre – Breesha Laing, Stephanie Brew and Kirstyn Horne – as well as assistant manager Phil Littlejohns have each received a Certificate of Meritorious Lifeguards from the UK’s drowning prevention charity in honour of their outstanding efforts. The team spotted a female swimmer getting into difficulty during a gentle aquafit session for seniors and helped her out of the pool, identifying from her symptoms that she was suffering a stroke, and called an ambulance.

The woman’s condition quickly deteriorated and she stopped breathing. The team immediately began to administer CPR and continued to do so until she started breathing again. A paramedic arrived 15 minutes later and helped the team with CPR until the ambulance arrived. The lady was taken to hospital where she is recovering. National trainer/assessor on the Isle of Man Mike Ferguson said: “We’re delighted that the lifeguard team from Western Swimming Pool has been honoured in this way. “Our lifeguards are trained to deal with precisely these sorts of situations and I’m very proud of how they performed on the day.”

SERCO Leisure has further engaged and motivated its swimmers after successfully implementing SWIMTAG. Last year, the operator installed the technology at three sites; Aquadrome, Basingstoke; Sovereign Centre, Eastbourne and AquaSplash, Jersey. This was followed by Maidstone Leisure Centre earlier this year after the success of the product at the other three centres. Southern aquatics support manager Alex Carty said: “Swimming on a regular basis promotes many physical and mental benefits and also helps to attract participation from groups in the community who are not necessarily motivated to use the gym. “Until recently, engaging with swimmers and implementing interventions which motivate and inspire has been very difficult because the tools have just not been available. “Couple this with the fact that lane swimming is highly repetitive with very little social interaction and it becomes easy to understand why many people struggle to remain engaged long term. This is where SWIMTAG has really added value. “SWIMTAG has provided multiple benefits but the main one for us is the opportunity it creates to make swimming social. “All users gain access to the online challenges created and maintained by SWIMTAG. Sometimes these are open to all, enabling Serco users

to participate alongside users from other pools engaged with SWIMTAG across the globe but there are also opportunities to create single site and closed multi-site challenges. This allows friendly competition between individuals across our venues. “To encourage engagement, we enter all participants into a monthly prize draw. Reward isn’t focused on performance, it’s focused on participation.” This approach is proving successful, with a current Channel Swim Challenge attracting 65 participants and encouraging an average swim session time of 36 minutes. Each participant also logged an average monthly session attendance of five. Alex added: “Across the four sites offering SWIMTAG, more than 14,500 sessions have been logged using the system since December 2016. “This gives Serco an incredible bank of data which allows us to better understand the swim habits of our users and make data comparisons between sites. “The Maidstone Leisure Centre has achieved the highest engagement numbers so far. This may be because SWIMTAG is a new service and we have promoted it well within the centre but there may be other reasons too. “We will now start to really interrogate the data with the aim of replicating best practice across our other sites.”

What role can clubs play in supporting self-managed workout programmes? By Matthew Januszek IT’S often said that YouTube is the world’s second largest search engine. Whether that’s true or not, with more than 3b searches a month it’s clearly a big part of daily life for millions of people. Video is also increasingly proving to be a key feature of Facebook (Mark Zuckerberg recently spoke about a ‘video first’ strategy) and other platforms. These platforms are the go-to place for millions of fitness enthusiasts who are looking for guidance on their workouts. They spend hours trawling through them, picking out videos that seem appropriate to their situation and objectives. There is of course lots of amazing content out there. However, we all know that much of the training videos on YouTube and elsewhere are substandard. The internet is littered with videos that demonstrate poor technique, or give bad advice on choosing exercises for specific results. But perhaps the biggest potential downfall of a purely DIY approach based around online content is the lack of consistency. Users may do a good job of collating exercises into a good programme, but there’s a risk that what they come up with will be very hit and miss.

Structure and consistency is an important feature of the best online content Despite the availability of all this free content from thousands of sources, there is a need and demand for something more consistent and more structured. This is why many PTs have been successful in creating and selling online training programmes. It’s also why fitness apps are so popular. There’s something very attractive about being able to access a series of exercises and workouts from a single source. Users benefit from consistency across all the content. They also have a programme to follow, making life simpler and potentially keeping them motivated and engaged for the longer term. These types of support resources are especially relevant for training based around functional equipment and freeweights. Proper guidance on good technique is essential with these tools. What content are you providing to your members? The combination of one-to-one or small group PT, attendance at classes and self-motivated workouts using online training resources is a recipe for success and results. For clubs, there is an opportunity to take the lead in providing the resources members need for all three ingredients of this recipe.

Matthew Januszek By creating high quality content to complement your in-club PT and classes, you can further strengthen your brand and position you and your trainers as the experts. The content will not only provide valuable instruction for your members, but it will also reach out to potential customers, showing them the level of expertise they can access if they use your facility. However, creating the third ingredient of content for members to use in their own time isn’t always possible for clubs, due to time or financial constraints. It’s why many clubs are partnering with content providers, even if it’s on the basis of recommending suitable online content or apps to members.

It should by straightforward for clubs to assess what’s available, choosing content that will fit their members’ needs. Ideally, a club should ask its training staff to become familiar with the content before recommending it to members. This will ensure that staff are prepared for members’ questions about integrating the content into their workout schedule. From Escape’s perspective, we have worked hard to ensure the efficacy and quality of the hundreds of ‘Workout of the Week’ videos we have produced (and continue to produce). These have helped to establish us as leaders in functional fitness and are available on our YouTube channel and shared via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. We have also recently launched our free ‘Escape Your Limits App’ that includes carefully-developed instructional videos and workouts based around functional training tools. Clubs are invited to recommend our content as part of their initiatives to provide an additional valuable service to their members. They can help members to avoid wasting time trawling through countless videos, and give them confidence that they are working with resources likely to achieve the results they want. n Matthew Januszek is customer solutions director at Escape Fitness.

Following the first installation of Wattbikes at 41 Bannatyne Health clubs in early 2016, the group will now offer its more than 200,000 members use of the equipment at all of its 68 clubs across the United

Engage your members with charity challenge GYM owners looking for a fun way to engage with their members have been encouraged to sign up for a ready-made charity challenge. Marathon In A Day takes place over the weekend of September 1 to 3, where individuals and teams of up to eight people will be invited to run 26.2 miles within 24 hours. The difference with this event is that only running times count, meaning individuals can compete in a variety of ways from running the whole distance in one go, to two halves or 25 one mile laps and a 1.2 mile distance to finish off. Or they can run with up to seven others – splitting the distance between them. The initiative, which is also a

fundraiser for mental health charity Mind, was created by Kevin Betts and Clare Rixon. Both seasoned marathon runners, they devised Marathon In A Day to make the marathon distance more accessible to all types of people – breaking the distance down into manageable chunks and creating a less-competitive, supportive event. Kevin said: “We’re truly the most inclusive marathon event in the country: we want anyone and everyone to have the opportunity to take part. “It’s a ready-made challenge for operators to offer their members: they could even pit teams and sites against each other to create a competition if they wish.”

Is your leisure facility prepared for new data protection laws? By Ivan Stevenson, Debit Finance Collections INFORMATION security – we hear about it everywhere; the news, the TV. Just why is this topic of conversation so prevalent? Sensitive information, think payment and personal details, is handled far more frequently in this day and age than any other period before, thanks chiefly to the sheer upsurge in internet usage. Whilst the digital age has given rise to some fantastic innovations and made massive leaps in globalising communications, it has all too often come at a price, mostly in the form of hackers and scammers. It’s therefore crucial to put as many safety nets in place as you can, especially when your members’ information is at stake. This is of particularly significance in the face of new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), set to come into force next May. The largest change in data protection in the last 20 years, the GDPR will replace the current Data Protection Act and specifically targets controllers and processors of data. That includes leisure organisations like yours. Whilst not too far from the current set under the DPA, the new rules will give individuals stronger consensual rights over the way their personal data is used. This includes more robust safeguards, alongside a greater duty to privacy from organisations

and covers areas such as data awareness, communication, lawful processing and consent. I’m quite proud to say that at DFC, information security is the lynchpin of our operations. We simply couldn’t claim our unfaltering commitment to trust and transparency if we didn’t. We’ve already started thinking about the changes we need to take to ensure we meet the new regulations under the GDPR. As a business, you should too, so as not to fall folly to more stringent laws coming into force. Under the new rules, data watchdogs can levy fines of four per cent of global revenue or up to 20m euros – whichever is higher. That’s quite a jump from the current £500,000 or one per cent of annual turnover under the DPA. Direct Debit is the securest money transfer service available, but that shouldn’t stop you taking steps to ensure you meet the expected regulatory standards for yourself and your members. If you have any questions regarding how the new laws may affect your Direct Debit provisions, why not get in touch? Operator wins safety award GLL has won a prestigious safety award in recognition of the large number of incidents it has responded to with defibrillators. The biennial London Ambulance Service’s Saving Lives’ Awards 2017 saw GLL nominated in both the Community and Organisational categories. Staff at Finchley Lido were overall winners in the Community Award, while special commendation was given to the Waterfront Leisure Centre who made the final shortlist in the same award category.

GLL were also shortlisted finalists in the Organisational category. GLL’s national standards and compliance manager Michelle Howe said: “To maximise a casualty’s chances of survival following a cardiac arrest, it is vital that the first responders are trained and know what to do. “Those minutes before an ambulance arrive are vital to a patient’s chances of a successful outcome and GLL’s commitment to life saving training and technology is acknowledged through these awards.”

Jumptastic Gloucestershire is the first trampoline park to undergo Quest assessment.

Jumptastic gain Quest Plus status

Ladies only gym Club Zest has been voted Sunderland Gym of the Year by readers of the local paper. The club was named the winner, following a public vote in The Sunderland Echo competition. Gym manager Holly Donaldson said: “We are over the moon with the title and feel like all our hard work that we have put into the club is starting to pay off. “We have gained extra members since taking over in November and the changes we have made to the club proves that Zest is getting more and more popular. “The award win just proves that people are voting for us and getting behind us. We are looking forward to the National Fitness Awards in December where we hope we can repeat our success.”

GLOUCESTERSHIRE facility Jumptastic has become the first trampoline park to undergo Quest assessment. In addition to Quest Plus status, Jumptastic also achieved Right Directions’ new Trampoline Park Quality Mark – the first of its kind to be awarded in the UK. It can be accomplished as a stand alone award or alongside Quest, with achievements from specific Quest modules counting towards the mark. Jumptastic’s managing director Lee Myall said: “We have worked with Right Directions, the health and safety and quality management specialist that manages Quest, since start up, using the company’s Trampoline Park

Safety Operating Plan, which sets out how a trampoline park should operate on a day to day basis, helping us to identify key risks at both design and operational stages. “This meant we already had the procedures in place that Quest Plus and the Trampoline Park Quality Mark evaluate, we just didn’t have the badges to prove it. Now we do! “Achieving Quest is very important, for our staff and the trampoline park sector as a whole, as well as those people using our facilities. It’s third party verification of our commitment to delivering an excellent day to day service, as well as continuous improvement across our facilities.”
