The evening was hosted by former TV Gladiator and star of Wonder Woman Jenny Pacey and award winning fitness expert Dean Hodgkin and took place at The Athena in Leicester; attended by over 800 guests from all corners of the fitness industry. Jenny said: “The National Fitness Awards have to be one of my favourite evenings of 2017. “Presenting awards to the best in the business, meeting industry leaders and celebrating the incredible achievements and people within fitness.” Other winners on the night included Foxhills Club and Resort in Surrey, which picked up two awards for Best

Hotel Facility and Health Club of the Year, Mike Hind from Mas Body Gym in Middlesbrough who was crowned Gym Based Personal Trainer of the Year and Solan Fitness in East Grinstead which took home the trophy for Newcomer of the Year. Event director Judith Halkerston added: “All our winners have had an arduous journey to this point – the standard of entries seems to just get stronger year on year and every facility that walked away with an award should be extremely proud. “Our awards’ night is always an amazing celebration of the fitness industry as a whole – being in December many of the shortlisted clubs use the occasion as their staff Christmas party and it is lovely to see everyone having such a great time. It was a wonderful evening and it was lovely to share in the celebrations of the winners.” n Look out for a round up of our winners and action from the NFAs in our feature, starting on page 37

More than a quarter of adults own a tracker

Fitness industry veteran Hans Muench was awarded the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award at the National Fitness Awards, in recognition of his contribution to the sector. Hans has worked in leisure for over 30 years; taking on a range of roles from lecturer and speaker to consultant. He was also previously IHRSA director of Europe. He said: “The surprise and the honour you bestowed upon me was very special; one of the nicest things that has ever happened to me. I appreciate it greatly and will treasure the moment and the memory. The entire event was amazing and I enjoyed every minute of it.”

MORE than a quarter of UK adults now own an exercise tracker of some kind, according to research, with a third of those in possession wearing theirs every day. Research, conducted on behalf of life insurance comparison website Compare Cover, also showed around a third of people are willing to spend up to £200 on an exercise tracker in a bid to improve fitness levels. London residents are mainly using theirs to monitor sleep patterns, while those in Northern Ireland are most likely to use theirs to aid weight loss. Compare Cover’s business development director Mike Preston said: “Contrary to wider discussions around fitness trackers and their popularity emerging merely as a passing phase, our study appears to show consumers of all ages – and on a fairly large scale – have firmly incorporated the benefits wearable fitness technology could bring into their daily lives.” Over 26 per cent named the Fitbit Charge as their tracker of choice, with 15 per cent opting for the Samsung Gear.

‘Maximise’ the theme of annual National Fitness Conference By Christina Eccles

MAXIMISE was the theme of the 2017 National Fitness Conference where delegates learned top tips and tricks to boost their profile, potential, profit and presence. Branding expert Richard Hurst, award winning personal trainer Scott McGarry, Everyone Active regional director Duncan Jefford and nutritionist Ben Coomber formed the speaker line up for this year’s conference, which took place at Leicester Racecourse ahead of the National Fitness Awards at the Athena in the evening. Richard who is creative director at branding agency WPA Pinfold explained the importance of a strong brand and how thinking about your logo, company colours and how consistent you are can help to cement your fitness business in potential customers’ minds. He said: “A brand is more than a logo. It’s who you are and what you want to achieve. “Think about the customer journey. Every single touch point you have with a client is a chance to build your brand and cement your product in their mind.” Richard who has worked on branding for the likes of award winning gym Fitness Garage in

Sheffield also advised the audience on how to get started when it comes to creating a brand for your gym or personal training business. He added: “Build a brand that’s unique to you and your offering. Be authentic, find your position in the market and differentiate yourself. “People don’t need another gym. But they probably do need something you can offer.” Multi award winning personal trainer Scott McGarry spoke on how to create an award winning team; advising delegates on how to maximise the potential of their staff. He added that while jobs feed bank accounts, being part of a team “feeds your passion”; making each member of staff feel valued and ensuring a consistently high standard of service to clients.

Everyone Active regional director Duncan Jefford also spoke at the event; revealing the golden rules of creating a profitable facility. He encouraged the audience to look at factors such as secondary income – claiming retail is often a “missed opportunity” in clubs – sustainability to combat rising energy prices and cash flow. He also added that whatever your budgets are, set the bar “significantly higher” as achieving profit, rather than breaking even, allows you money to spend in other areas such as investing in the community. Nutritionist and educator Ben Coomber rounded off the day with a talk on how to win at social media and grow your fitness following. He urged delegated to think about their audience; what is their

rack and dumbbells weighing up to 50kg. Additional free weights are also available in the main gym which will also receive new resistance and cardio equipment from Technogym. Elsewhere in the centre, the changing rooms will be refurbished in response to customer feedback.

CEO of tmactive Martin Guyton said: “We are in constant communication with our members. They told us they needed more free weights and this was backed by an in-depth study into usage of the gym equipment. “Following the recommendations of this study, and a significant

demographic interested in, what are they engaged with and what social media sites do they use? He also advised fitness professionals not to spread themselves too thin; instead focus on which parts of social media fit their business best. He added: “What are you showing about your business and products that’s new and engaging? People want to be part of something. “Focus and become an expert. Can you be creative and challenge the status quo?” Throughout the day, delegates also enjoyed valuable networking opportunities and the chance to take a look around a dedicated exhibition space filled with products and services from over 20 companies, including Technogym, Fitness Systems, Physical Company, MYZONE and ServiceSport. Delegate Adam Jones from Live Life Light in North Wales added: “The National Fitness Conference is something we wouldn’t have missed for the world. “Not only do you get to mix with fellow fitness professionals, but you get to see some of the latest equipment and awesome guest speakers. “The organisation is top notch, so no doubt we will be back again next year!”

Brand opens new London studio A NEW workout brand has opened its second London based studio in Canary Wharf; designed to appeal to those busy city workers who want to get fit without having the time commitment. Exerceo Training is offering the chance to get super fit in a hurry with its 25-minute workouts which use muscle stimulation to target areas quickly and effectively. CEO Sonja Rogojew said: “Everyone wants to look fit and in the best

shape possible, but in a busy city like London, where people are juggling full-time jobs with busy social lives, it can be hard to fit it all in. “Going to the gym every day and doing an hour long workout for most people isn’t realistic, which is why our short burst exercise regime is ideal for those with full time careers. “By carrying out just one or two sessions a week, our clients notice fast results with something that won’t take over their life.”

Katy said: “Amy and Jon are a constant encouragement and we’re already planning how I can start back once baby is born. Don’t get me wrong I’m not going to be doing sit ups between feeds, plus I’m not that bothered about sliding back into those pre-baby jeans within a week, but I’d like to be able to begin exercising ASAP afterwards and feel strong and healthy both for baby and me. “ Katy Poulsom (right) is pictured with Amy Stancliffe.

Advertiser’s announcement

Fitness Systems kit out operator’s second site NEW for 2018, a fitness facility is about to open its doors of their second site ‘B! Health & Fitness Honiton’ located near Exeter, following their two years of success at their first site ‘B! Health & Fitness Lyme Regis’. The new site features state-of-theart equipment from True 400 and Force 20/20 – supplied and fitted by Fitness Systems. We took the opportunity to speak to the director of B! Health & Fitness, Craig Bernhardt, and get an insight on the journey of how this all became a reality. Craig had always lived an active life style throughout his childhood, which continued into adulthood upon taking on a career in the armed forces; making it a way of life. “Running my own gym was always something I dreamed of but the opportunity arose to turn that dream

“I wanted to try some new brands and also the way that Fitness Systems suggested branding the kit in my lively colours was very appealing.”

into a reality back in 2014 (B! Lyme Regis). I won’t lie, it’s been tough but now with the second club launched it gives me huge satisfaction.” Seeing the success of the first site, and watching the general public using the facilities to embark on their own personal journeys into becoming happier and healthier individuals, provided Craig the initial motive in creating ‘B! Health & Fitness Honiton’ to allow the B! Heath & Fitness family to reach out further afield. “The research for the second site began in 2014. Studying Honiton I knew the population statistics and growth projections for the town but premises were difficult to find. I needed a minimum of 6,000 sq ft and ample parking.”

With the site now established at Unit 5, Weston Park, Devonshire industrial Estate, Honiton EX14 1ST; and the gym designs coming together, Craig was recommended to Fitness Systems to supply them with their gym facilities. We asked Craig what is was that made him use us to provide the equipment for his gym: “I wanted to try some new brands and also the way that Fitness Systems suggested branding the kit in my lively colours was very appealing.” With over 40 years’ experience, we spoke to Craig to establish what it was exactly he wanted from his equipment and as you’ll see in the photos above, Craig is now working with his bespoke green equipment,

branded with the ‘B! Health & Fitness’ logo. This is just the start of what is to come with the growth of B! Health & Fitness, with them already having the intentions of growing further with a third site already being put into consideration. This is a gym with customers’ priorities being put first not only offering fantastic facilities it includes a wide variety of classes, with on-site physiotherapy on offer among the great staff they have there to help you with all your needs to achieve your fitness goals. Business award win for inspiring owner By Olivia Taylor

Northampton’s Mounts Baths has been included in BBC Culture’s list of the world’s best art deco swimming pools. The only other UK pool to make the list of 14 is the Jubilee Pool in Penzance, along with four in Germany, three in France, two in the US and one each in India, Australia and Hungary. Pool and group changing rooms at the baths are currently undergoing a £600,000 redevelopment, expected to be complete by spring. Ian Redfern, managing director of Northampton Leisure Trust which runs the facility, said: “This capital investment makes a significant improvement to an iconic 1936 Art Deco facility that has national and international status.”

New vitamin product launched A NEW vitamin product has launched to help fitness enthusiasts get the most from their training. Vit Stix are single portions that simply tear and pour into water to make a refreshing tropical citrus drink. Founder Tom Anderson-Dixon said “After successfully launching Squash Stix, I found juggling the running of a company, a social life, and eating and staying healthy really tough. “I was fully aware I wasn’t getting

the right vitamins, nor was I getting the most from my workouts when I finally got out to pound the streets. “After conducting market research I found I wasn’t alone and that’s why we launched Vit Stix to complement our already successful Squash Stix brand.” Vit Stix has just signed a deal with musclefood.com and the company is now progressing talks with other major sport, health and grocery retailers to offer the product in stores.

AN inspiring gym owner is proving that having drive and determination really does pay off. Tiffany Clark, owner of SXE FIT studios in Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire has been delivering her unique SXE FIT method for over 10 years and has recently been awarded Business Women of the Year at the Inspire Awards. Tiffany was put forward by a member of her staff and she told Workout she was shocked to hear she had been successful in winning. She said: “It was a complete shock to me. What most people don’t know about me is that I am from one of the worst council estates in Leeds; Halton Moor. I’ve been fending for myself from the age of 16, and surviving off £30 a week. Most of my furniture was from The Salvation Army, and when I think back to those times and how hard life was, I was not dealt with the most fortunate of cards at the start of my life.” But this hasn’t hindered her success as the personal trainer fought off tough competition to win the award. She added: “Everything I do and everything that I work towards is about empowering women and installing confidence in them.” Throughout her career, Tiffany has learned some valuable business lessons about trust, creating something that works and making

Tiffany Clark with her award. things easy to understand. She said: “When I first started in business I took everyone at face value and I trusted everyone, but I’ve learnt that you can’t always be like that. “My SXE Fit method works, but I work on results, research, statistics and common sense. You hear so many different things when it comes to fitness and results that it can be confusing.” Throughout her life, Tiffany has always had plenty of determination when it comes to her goals – always believing she’d be a success. She added: “I see people that I used to know years ago and they say to me ‘wow you always said you’d be here’ – and that’s a great feeling. “I knew from the beginning when I did my first personal training course that I’d have my own gym.”

Leisure centre’s makeover to include climbing facility By Christina Eccles

Olympic swimmer Steve Parry has been confirmed as active-net 2018’s after dinner speaker. Steve, who retired from professional swimming after winning a bronze medal at the Athens’ Olympics in 2004, will talk to delegates about lessons learned from being an elite athlete, as well as his personal battle with cancer and his business successes. Launched in 2014, active-net brings together leading operators and suppliers from the active leisure sector for business-focused, pre-selected meetings, together with informative educational slots, networking lunches and an evening meal. active-net 2018 will take place at Eastwood Hall in Nottingham on March 14 and 15.

WORK has begun on an £850,000 makeover of Portsmouth’s Mountbatten Leisure Centre, which includes the introduction of a stateof-the-art climbing facility. The new clip and climb activity centre offers several different climbing experiences and will add a new dimension to the venue’s activity offer. The project will also see significant improvements made to the venue’s main reception, Terrace Café and events spaces, as well as the creation of a new soft play area. The reception will be renovated to create a more accessible and open welcome. Improved self-service features include kiosks and a mobile app to enable customers to manage their activity bookings more easily. The Terrace Café will be enhanced with improved layout and new seating will create more social spaces. A soft play activity area for the under fives will also encourage more families with young children to visit. Venue operator BH Live is carrying out the improvements in partnership with Portsmouth City Council, as part of a 10-year investment plan into the city’s sport and event venues. BH Live’s chief executive Peter Gunn said: “Mountbatten Leisure Centre, with its world class sporting

facilities and 50m Olympic size pool, is already a leading sport, leisure and event destination – but we think it has the potential to be even better. “By enhancing its public areas the venue will become even more accessible and attractive for customers, visitors and event organisers. “In broadening the activity programme through new attractions, we hope more local residents,

including families and young people, will be encouraged to visit and get more active. “Finally we will be able to deliver a better experience overall and we believe this is key to continued customer use and satisfaction.” Plans will be displayed in the venue and customers informed of the improvement schedule, which will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption.

The GDPR: your questions answered – part three IN the final part of our series on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), we answer your questions. What does the Right to be Forgotten mean? If a member asks to be ‘forgotten’, all of their data must be immediately removed from your system and records. The GDPR states customers can ask you to stop processing their data and for it to be permanently deleted at any time. Check with your software supplier that your database allows this to happen swiftly; most are implementing measures to anonymise datasets so they are GDPR compliant. What should I do if I know there’s been a data breach? “Come May you’ll be obliged to report data breaches “without undue delay and, where feasible, not later than 72 hours after becoming aware of it,” explains Utku Toprakseven, director of sports intelligence at 4 global, which manages the DataHub, a data sharing community for sport and leisure organisations. “As with much of the GDPR, the key is going to be being upfront and

open from the start, ensuring all your data processes are visible. If the worst does happen, make sure you’ve designed and rehearsed a contingency plan of what to do and who’ll do it.” GDPR compliance is so much work! Why should I bother? Aside from the fact you could incur a hefty fine (up to four per cent of your annual global turnover, or €20m, whichever is higher) it’s worth remembering the GDPR is essentially about personal privacy. We all care about that and expect businesses we give our details to will keep them safe. Get this right and members will know you respect them. “We’ve seen large scale data breaches in the press and just how bad it can be when data protection goes wrong. You wouldn’t want that to be your personal data, exposed to the world; neither would your members. Imagine the fallout if it was at your site. Keep members’ information safe and your relationship with them will benefit,” advises Utku. “Build data privacy into your culture –ultimately, customers who

feel they can trust you will be more loyal.” I’m only just starting to think about compliance… have I left it too late? If you’re worried time is running out, start with any data the public sees, for example online forms, email marketing and your privacy policy, which are very easy to spot. Next examine data you buy in, or sell to third parties, and ensure this is compliant. Lastly focus on health data you collect. Anything publicly visible will put you at higher risk than internal processes, which still need to be compliant but can be a lower priority. Lastly think carefully about what you’re keeping. If you lose a member, how long do you retain their details? If you delete or archive, how? A disgruntled ex-member who’s being contacted again and again will be the first to report you to the ICO. Do I need to employ a Data Protection Officer (DPO)? “It’s certainly worth consulting a specialist GDPR lawyer, to work out where you’re compliant and any changes needed,” says Utku.

“Whether you need a DPO will largely depend on your organisation’s size, but every leisure centre and club, however small, will need a staff member whose job it is to ‘own’ data protection, is involved in all aspects of your data management and is solely responsible for all of your data requirements. “Just complying isn’t enough; you must keep a full audit trail to prove it, which the ICO can ask for at any time. You’ll need someone who holds that responsibility. “You wouldn’t run your business without an accountant – the same should apply to your data protection.” Remember, the GDPR comes into force on May 25 2018. n For further information about the GDPR, The Information Commissioner’s Office is a good place to start: https://ico.org.uk/ for-organisations/data-protectionreform/ visit: The DataHub has published a White Paper on the relevant facts of the GDPR for the industry available at https://www. datahubclub.com/docs/The_GDPR. pdf

Sport England chooses Greater Manchester for pilot GREATER Manchester has been chosen by Sport England as a pilot area to work with on a new approach to build healthier, more active communities across England. Around £100m of National Lottery funding will be invested in 12 pilot schemes over four years to create partnerships that make it easier for people in these communities to access sport and physical activity. Sport England and local partners in Greater Manchester want to find

ways to try and remove the barriers that stop people getting active such as cost, confidence, transport and access to activities and open spaces. There will be a focus on: n Children and young people aged five to 18 in out-of-school settings n People out-of-work, and people in work, but at risk of becoming unemployed n People aged 40 to 60 with, or at risk of, long-term conditions: specifically cancer, cardiovascular

disease and respiratory illnesses n Improving mental health and tackling inequalities Sport England chief executive Jennie Price said: “We are delighted that Greater Manchester will be working with us on this groundbreaking investment. “We want to get to the heart of the issues that stop people being as active as they might like to be, and work alongside every part of the community and the groups and

institutions in Greater Manchester support them. “This is not all about sport – we’re prepared to look at wider issues like transport, childcare, how easy it is to walk or cycle – whatever that community feels is most relevant to them. The process to be appointed as a pilot area for this work was incredibly competitive, and Greater Manchester has emerged from a very strong field. I am really delighted to be working with them.”

The course was attended by 14 fitness instructors who all passed successfully and are now certified to teach the classes. Clubbercise classes are now popping up across Australia in locations including Sydney, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Sonique said: “Australia has been incredible! I’ve trained an inspirational team of new instructors and I also met some of our existing instructors. It’s great to hear how much the Aussies are loving their Clubbercise classes and I can’t wait to come back.”

THE future of Grade II listed Jacob’s Wells Baths has been secured in a deal proposed between Bristol City Council and registered charity Fusion Lifestyle. At a Cabinet meeting, members approved officers’ recommendations to undertake a Community Asset Transfer for the Baths and to grant a long-term lease to Fusion. Fusion has ambitious repair and redevelopment plans for the property, with the intended restoration of public swimming at the site complimented by the creation of new health and wellbeing facilities. This will include a community health and fitness facility and a range of flexible studio spaces. The redeveloped site will also incorporate a new community café with associated community meeting

and activity space. Fusion and the City Council will now work together with the aim of completing the lease by April 2018. Fusion’s director of business development Tim Mills said “We are absolutely delighted that the City Council has decided to support the community asset transfer of the Jacob’s Wells Baths site to Fusion. “We recognise that our restoration and redevelopment plans are ambitious and will be challenging to bring to fruition. “It has been over 40 years since the public were able to swim at Jacob’s Wells Baths, but we are really excited by the opportunity to breathe new life into a much cherished local building. We are determined to create a vibrant and sustainable facility inclusive and accessible to the local community.”

Craig tackles charity challenge EVERYONE Active regional sales and business manager Craig Allen is getting behind the organisation’s charity partnership with Mind by organising his own fundraising challenges. After completing the Berlin marathon in September, Craig has now signed up for the Transvulcania Ultra Marathon which takes place in May. The race spans 74km across the island of La Palma and participants will reach heights of 4,350m. To prepare for the event, Craig is training up to five times a week by going on long-distance runs before and after work.

He also regularly attends yoga sessions with his wife to help with muscle recovery. He said: “You hear a lot of people talking about physical appearance, but nobody ever says you should look after your mind and take time out to recharge. “I know from a personal point of view that exercise, whether it’s in a group or on your own, makes a world of difference to your mental health and can help to ease feelings of stress. “I hope to raise at least £900 for Mind, and raise awareness of the fantastic work that the charity carries out.”

School facilities can provide much needed space for group exercise By Jackie Latu

AS children, many of us will have enjoyed playing outside and being active with our friends. However, the number of hours people now tend to spend engaging in physical activities is decreasing. Alarming research from the British Journal of Sports Medicine (BJSM) has revealed that sitting down is now replacing physical activity from primary school age. With our lives getting busier due to either family, work or relationship commitments, exercising or socialising with peers doesn’t always feel possible. But, studies have shown that engaging in regular physical exercise can provide a wealth of benefits when it comes to improving our mental health and wellbeing, such as protecting against anxiety and depression. Whether its Zumba, Spinning, Pilates or circuits, fitness clubs can not only provide attendees with weight loss and physical benefits, but also with an all-round better quality of life. Group exercise can lower stress levels by 26 per cent, compared

to those who exercise alone. Traditionally, gyms have provided the necessary facilities to run group fitness classes, and those looking to engage in physical exercise usually turn to these venues to meet their fitness needs. But, there is now a growing trend in the number of public and private fitness facilities that are opening. In the last 12 months, the number of ad-hoc facilities that are opening has grown by over 20 per cent, with offices and community centres opening up to run exercise classes. But what about schools? Alongside gyms and community centres, schools also provide the ideal locations for fitness classes and group activities to take place. The high quality facilities schools can offer in the form of sports halls and classrooms are designed to house large numbers of students, and can therefore be used to house large-scale fitness classes. But at the moment, these facilities are often being left vacant and unused throughout weeknights, weekends and over school holidays when they could be being put to

Jackie Latu better use. Maximising the potential of schools’ quality facilities is even more crucial given that across the UK, many villages and towns are experiencing a severe lack of quality spaces that can be accessed by all. Local facilities are often being closed down, as more than 40 per cent of local councils are anticipating further cuts to frontline services such as leisure facilities due to a lack of funding. This means group fitness classes are not always an accessible

option for many people. Yet, with schools often located at the heart of their local communities, and in walking distance for most residents, they could help alleviate any issues around accessibility. Ultimately, if schools were to open up their facilities to the wider community, it would give local residents the opportunity to take part in fun group activities, such as Zumba or Pilates, where they may not have had the chance to before. This would go a long way towards encouraging more people to engage in exercise, helping to get the nation moving once more. Time restraints and additional commitments are pushing people away from keeping active and partaking in group activities. But, fitness needs to play a key part in our lives, as for many of us, much of our time is spent sitting down, perhaps at work or in the evenings. Schools can provide the much needed facilities to help local residents remain active, not only to improve their physical health but also their mental wellbeing. n Jackie Latu is managing director of School Lettings Solutions.

RESIDENTS with learning disabilities will soon be enjoying a variety of sports at The Waltham Forest Feel Good Centre following a link-up between the council, its sport and leisure partner GLL and recreational social enterprise, Sport For Confidence. The initiative will bring the benefits of participation and exercise to many more people in the borough previously unable to access mainstream sports. The programme, designed and delivered by social enterprise Sport For Confidence, has already received recognition from NHS England as an example of how businesses, health professionals and councils can come together to deliver a service which hugely benefits the community. The scheme places an occupational therapist and sports coach alongside each other, delivering physical activity sessions. Sinead Kelly, the occupational therapist responsible for the programme delivery at The Waltham Forest Feel Good Centre, said: “People with a learning disability can face additional challenges just walking through the doors of a leisure

centre. They may lack the confidence and support they need or be unsure if the environment and activities are right for them. “Through working with community groups including local charities, care homes, Clinical Commissioning Groups, GPs and community nursing teams, we can make the reasonable adjustments needed to remove the barriers and provide an inclusive service which meets individual needs.” The programme has been made possible by a grant awarded by The London Borough of Waltham Forest which will initially fund a weekly Boccia and multi sports session. As demand increases, additional sessions can be added to the timetable. GLL’s general manager at The Waltham Forest Feel Good Centre, Daniel O’Connor, added: “As a charitable social enterprise we strive to make our facilities available to as many people as possible. “Offering the Sport For Confidence programme creates new opportunities to reach groups who are traditionally difficult to engage. “I very much look forward to working with them and the Council to get more people, more active, more often.” Two members at MRC Fitness and Leisure in Ayrshire have been presented with special achievement awards. Susan Boyd lost over five stone and dropped five dress sizes, while Brian Kreslins lost weight, stopped drinking and gave up smoking to completely overhaul his lifestyle. The awards were presented at the gym’s annual Christmas Ceilidh, which was held at local hotel Dalgarven House. Susan and Brian are pictured with gym owner Lorraine Wallace.

Sevenoaks Leisure Centre to get £1m refurbishment By Christina Eccles

Award winning journalists Joe Warner and Jon Lipsey have joined forces with model and singer, Union J’s Josh Cuthbert to launch an eight-week health and fitness guide. The SHIFT56 System is based on three main elements; a fat loss exercise plan, a flexible eating plan and a goal-setting daily journal. Jon said: “The SHIFT56 System is the first of its kind to cater for both the mind and the body and uses the knowledge I have amassed throughout my career to create a simple and flexible plan that everyone can follow with ease.”

SEVENOAKS Leisure Centre is set to benefit from a £1m investment, which will see a complete redesign of the fitness facilities over two floors. The redevelopment will include the transformation of a large, underused toddler pool into a 104sqm dry side multi purpose room, new members’ changing area and a new look reception and cafe area. Improvements are also being made to the layout of the first floor gym, which will increase space to 302sqm on the first floor, to include a functional training area and allow for an enhanced free weights section on the ground floor. All new Technogym equipment will be installed throughout, while the existing dance studio will also be refurbished. On the ground floor, old dry side changing along with a disused spa will be stripped out to make room for new bespoke male and female changing for the fitness facilities. The project is being carried out by leisure design and build expert,

Createability, which has a longstanding relationship with Sencio, the company managing the leisure centre on behalf of Sevenoaks District Council. Createability assisted Sencio in developing the designs and specifications, as well as carrying out construction of the new facilities. CEO of Sencio Community Leisure, Jane Parish, said: “Sevenoaks Leisure Centre is a major hub within our community and is very well used. But the feel good factor was starting to wane as all our classes get fully booked up and the gym is often packed. “The old fashioned layout of the facilities meant the flow of members wasn’t working well, particularly for our female users, so we had to find a way to increase space within our existing four walls. “Createability came up with some fantastic concepts. We have worked with the team on a number of projects, including a smaller redevelopment of the fitness facilities at Sevenoaks about 10 years ago and redevelopments of White Oak and

Edenbridge Leisure Centres in 2005, so we are excited they are back to help us make this dream for firstclass fitness facilities at Sevenoaks a reality.” Managing director of Createability, Ian Cotgrave, added: “We really have thought about every aspect of the design from a user’s point of view. “For instance, we’ve included a low level screen between the female changing exit and the free weights area, so ladies don’t walk out of their changing area directly into the free weights section, but can go straight to the main studio, multi-use studio or up the stairs to the main gym. “We are also carrying out changes to make the building work more efficiently, including the installation of doors from the main pool area into the gym to stop the escape of both heat and moisture, which over the years has led to paint peeling and wood rotting in the corridor, as well as letting heat escape from the pool, which meant the air conditioning units struggled to work in the gym.” The work is due to complete in the spring.

TECHNOLOGY AND INTERACTIVE MEMBERSHIP SOLUTIONS

Engaging members with technology By Dave Wright WITH the increasing reliance on technology in every other aspect of our lives, it is no surprise that technology is now playing an increasing role in the digitalisation of our members’ fitness journey, and has no sign of abating. Through software and hardware solutions, technology has a role from signing into the club, and programme delivery, to digital records of workouts, measures of progress, biometrics and social connectivity. From a time when a sound system and clock were all the technology you needed to run a class, with the growth in technology, many operators across the sector of fitness are recognising that offering more advanced integrated technology is becoming more the norm and expectation than the USP it was for the early adopters. Operators are increasingly recognising the power of technology as a member engagement tool, aimed at either enhancing the members’ training experience in the facility; but also, importantly, through cloud based technology and apps, keeping members connected to their brand outside of the club, utilising a digital platform. Outside of the diminishing USP in an increasing competitive environment, integrating technology can be a sales tool, and added to specific programmes can help to add value to upsell members to higher yield memberships or programmes

Dave Wright such as PT and SGT. But ultimately in an industry where the primary goal is maintaining members’ ‘motivation’, and helping them achieve results, it’s about creating a fun and entertaining environment that takes the members experience to the next level, and give them an effective workout that members will not only join for, but will keep them motivated and coming back. Creating a positive in club experience is the first critical step which triggers the all-important dopamine cycle which will form an ongoing exercise habit. Within the club, technology ranging

from interactive flooring, integrated lighting and sound, to visuals, including videos and programmes delivered via screens, can be used to create an enhanced sensory experience. From a programming perspective, operators are adopting technology to aid trainers and members in delivery of the classes, with pre-set programmes, integrated timers, and exercise guides replacing the whiteboard, trainers’ freshly scribbled, top of head class schedule and wall mounted digital timer, as seen in models such as David Lloyd’s Blaze, Bannatyne’s Speedflex, Village Burn Baby Burn and Trib3. Pre-set programming allows multisite operators to create programmes remotely, that can be delivered to trainers at multiple sites using apps or in club software, and delivered at a touch of button or at pre-scheduled times. Such programmes can ensure consistency and standardisation across multiple trainers and sites. Although most of these software programmes are used to assist delivery of trainer led sessions, there is no doubt that members will see growth in use of this software, to offer wholly ‘virtual’ scheduled classes in these functional spaces, more commonly seen in group exercise and cycle rooms, allowing members to follow functional programmes outside of set instructor led class times.

If technology’s purpose is a motivational tool, it could be argued that the less engaged members who do not opt into virtual or group training have most to gain from technology to help them achieve results, see their progress and drive retention for the operator. Outside of using technology for uni directional pre-prescribed delivery of a virtual class, exercise or programme; using wearable technology or software compatible equipment adds a critical aspect to this experience, that of member interactivity, where the member can interact and engage with the software based on their performance or effort rather than it being ‘delivered’ to them. Bikes with ANT+ compatible technology allow metrics such as cadence and power to be streamed to big screens to create live feedback on performance. Moreover, using wearable technology like MYZONE, members get live objective and accurate feedback on their effort, calories and points, on a big screen when training, providing immediate motivation. The social accountability and camaraderie of group feedback naturally drives motivation more than members tracking their own workouts. Members using this technology have been shown to train harder, more often and enjoy their training. Continued on page 29.

TECHNOLOGY AND INTERACTIVE MEMBERSHIP SOLUTIONS This technology gives the instructor a unique opportunity to provide group and personalised feedback and create the team environment. Education is important so it means something. The key to engagement with technology is more than creating a great in club experience that finishes when the member leaves. Outside of the class, social accountability and tracking allows members to get an objective sense of achievement (see how many points or calories they have burned), taps into the competitive nature, visualise goal setting, and see their progress. In the growth of wearables, brands such as Apple, Fit Bit and Under Armour compete for clubs’ members to join their own digital community, as opposed to creating a community around the club. Building a digital social platform around the club allows touch points with members through branded emails, apps and social platforms; creating communities, a sense of belonging and loyalty even when members are away from the facility. These digital communities allow larger facilities and 24-hour operators to create communities seen in Cross Fit and boutique studios. By creating digital communities using platforms, clubs can connect members to other members and trainers to create communities and the gamification and single platform engages more members than purely the more engaged members who join clubs’ social media. These technologies also allow us to record and measure and share on a social platform and, in turn, that allows clubs to gamify members’ workouts.

Using points systems, clubs can create challenges and leader boards to gamify and engage members. Studies from operators using MYZONE, have shown gamification can significantly alter member behaviour. In adopting technology, it is important that data is not recorded or measured for the sake of it. To be motivation it has to be easy to use, accurate, relevant and simple to understand to maximise member

participation. It’s important for operators to recognise that technology is not a silver bullet to engaging members. In the words of Eric Schmidt (Google), ‘Technology doesn’t work on its own, it’s just a tool. You harness its power’. So, the way the club, management and brand use the technology and its deployment is critical to success. n Dave Wright is the CEO of CFM (Creative Fitness Marketing), CEO

and creator of MYZONE, owner of the Feelgood Fitness and Voyage Fitness Club Chains, a former Board Director of UK Active and founder of the IOU. With offices in Chicago (US), Nottingham (UK) and Melbourne (Oz), Dave’s companies have worked directly with over 5,000 health clubs across 30 different countries, encouraging people to be more and stay more physically active. Improve member and personal trainer communications with an engaging app ONE of the most important things a mobile app offers to members is awareness of and communication with your club. Through that regular interaction with your members, you’re fostering trust. In the same way as distributing t-shirts, water bottles, and other random memorabilia with your company logo on it has served in the past both as advertisement and assistance, mobile apps strengthen your brand and educate your customers. Ashbourne’s fully customer branded members’ app improves retention, increases referrals and allows for fully automated management. Members can track their workouts with graphical reports plotting their progress. One of the key features with the app is the ability for personal trainers to create workouts for clients and then send them directly to the member’s phone. PTs can also create

sessions and then ping them out to every member to complete. Members can then record their workout performance and even integrate their Fitbit and other fitness tracking devices. The app, that has been designed in conjunction with club owners, also allows members to book classes and communicate with other members. It is fully customised with the club’s own logos and colours.

Grant Harrison from Ashbourne said: “We are constantly updating our software to meet the demands of club owners and their members, and our app is the latest update. “It’s been very well received by clubs especially as it’s included in our club software package at no extra cost.” As a club administrator, the set-up and maintenance of your Ashbourne app requires minimal effort.

This allows you to concentrate on interacting with your members; which you can do from within your app. Some of our mobile admin features include; updating your latest club news, updating your latest referral prizes, creating deals and offers for your members. With built in communication features manifesting in the form of a social media-esque timeline and messaging service. These can be ideal ways for you to stay in touch with your member base, gather priceless member feedback and opinions or simple queries. Take a few minutes to look at your business Bryan to open convention from a different angle GLOBAL technology expert Bryan O’Rourke will open the 2018 Retention Convention, which will take place in Birmingham on April 26. The fourth Retention Convention, organised by Dr. Paul Bedford, will focus on the use of technology to improve retention and will give delegates the opportunity to hear more about the use of artificial intelligence and chat bots in a gym setting, as well as location devices such as ibeacons. Bryan will be using his talk to look at how business models are being affected by technology. He said: “Paul has been a long-time friend and collaborator whom I’ve enjoyed working with, following and learning from, so I am honoured to contribute to the upcoming retention convention, which to date has been utterly fantastic. “We hope to make this year an even better one.” The 2018 convention will once again

Bryan O’Rourke be hosted by Dean Hodgkin, who will also interview guest operators and manufacturers about their successes with technology.

IT’S the time of year again where we reflect on everything we have done throughout the previous 365 days. We will review many things that are top of our list of importance, such as: n How many members have I joined this year? n How many members have cancelled this year? Then we might have a look to see how many products we have sold as part of our secondary spend in the club over the last year. These are great things to keep focused on, especially as your year of trading starts to come to an end, but how often do we take time to look at the other elements of the business that can have an impact on your bottom line? So, when was the last time the whole business had a health check that involved which suppliers provide what level of service and how much are you paying right now?

It’s a bit like the insurance scenario; whereby every year the car insurance renewal comes through and – if you’re like me – I let auto renew without checking it. Now is the time to look at all the services you use to power your business: utility bills, insurance, rent/leasing costs etc. But the one service that often goes overlooked is membership management software – it manages your members and keeps things running smoothly in your gym, but how much is it costing you? Take the ClubRight Switch and Save challenge, let us show you just how much you could save monthly and annually by switching to ClubRight. Over Christmas if you get a spare moment in between watching The Wizard of Oz and Home Alone, see how much you can save, allowing you to invest more back into your business and setting up 2018 to become a massive success.

FUNCTIONAL TRAINING Fast growing functional fitness brand MultiFit has big plans for 2018 – including expansion into the UK market. Workout spoke to founders Samir Kapoor and Sally Jones-Kapoor to find out more.

Brand reveals expansion plans Tell us more about the MultiFit concept? What does a typical studio have? Why did you choose to specialise in functional training? Myself and my partner, Sally, established the business in July 2015. We both had careers in banking before deciding to take the plunge and retrain as personal trainers in the UK and open a chain of health clubs. Our vision was to create a community of dedicated fitness trainers and reach out to more people all over India, introducing them to a different, refined approach to fitness. We believe fitness is a lifestyle and can only be part of someone’s life if it is socially engaging. Both Sally and I noticed that most patrons in gyms aim for physical fitness rather than building a muscular body. However, they failed to realise that machines were not necessary to achieve the required results. Through MultiFit, we wish to change this perception and reintroduce exercising as was practised by our ancestors. What successes have you had so far? Why do you think your studios are proving so popular? The Indian market has predominantly been an equipment-based market, but this does not lead to customer engagement. We believe there are two

components to running a great fitness club: the hardware, which is the equipment, and the software, which is the trainers. Our trainers are people who have chosen to join the industry because they are passionate about it. Unlike the west, in India, there are hardly any formal qualifications after schooling to help a person study the requirements of becoming a PT, which makes hiring staff a challenge. We work on hiring national and international athletes and currently have more than 20 working with us as full-time trainers. Our highly motivated trainers are the soul of our gyms, which ensures the highest level of engagement with our customers. We run a unique franchise model, where the franchisee is only the finance partner and the gym run by MultiFit, including the hiring, training and constant upskilling. One of the key criteria we look at is the entrepreneur’s interest in training. Every employee must work with us for at least a month before he is shifted to a franchise, so we ensure the DNA of the gym stays the same. How are your expansion plans going? Tell us about your plans to expand into the UK? Within two years we have built up a chain of 16 fitness studios across four cities in India, with an additional 12 under construction.

MultiFit founders Sally Jones-Kapoor and Samir Kapoor. We plan to launch our first international studio before the end of the year. With an advantage of Sally coming from the UK and her understanding for the market, we thought of starting our first international fitness club in the UK. Apart from this, we have had trainers from the UK who have joined us in India, who added a lot of value because of their knowledge sharing sessions. We will also be sending our Indian trainers to the UK, as they too have a lot of new methods to add to fitness. What do you think makes your studios special and different to others out there? Based on the firm belief that fitness should extend beyond dumbbells and

machines, MultiFit is one of the few gyms in the country that focuses on functional training. MultiFit challenges the conventional gym imagery by abandoning traditional equipment and narrow goals, instead using simple tools like ropes and tyres improve one’s performance at everyday activities. The regimes at MultiFit involve Intense Functional Interval Training (iFIT). They also focus on calisthenics, the practice of using one’s own body weight for exercise. Tell us about your work with Fitness Systems – how has the company supported you? Our association with Fitness Systems has been phenomenal, they have been providing equipment for our functional fitness studios across India and the UK since the very beginning. Fitness Systems have always helped us in forming our studios in the best way by providing the required and latest equipment in the fitness industry. What will you be focusing on in 2018? We would like to expand to other countries, starting with the UK, and create the best talent pool of trainers. By the end of 2020, we aim to have 160 fitness studios across UAE, UK and India.

PT to open first F45 gym out of London By Olivia Taylor AN ambitious personal trainer is capitalising on the popularity of one of the world’s fastest growing fitness franchises. Jane Roche is set to open the first F45 gym outside of London in Brighton, with 900 people already signing up to take part in a free taster session. F45 is a functional training facility which inspires members by placing an emphasis on the ‘three key factors’ of motivation, innovation and results. Jane said: “I first found out about F45 about 14 months ago, and when I looked into it and found that it was a franchise I wanted to be involved. It’s been very challenging, and quite a long slog but we’re finally there, we’re ready to open our doors. “I’m so excited and happy that we’re the first club outside of London. It really works, people get some fantastic results.” F45 franchises create a close fitness community through their unique group training offering. Jane added: “F45 isn’t about getting thousands of members. It’s about finding members and creating a family. It really fits in with my beliefs because that’s what I’m about, helping people become the best versions of themselves.” Jane, who has always been involved in the fitness industry, previously

“The good thing about F45 is the fact that it’s 45 minutes, it’s not an hour or two.” worked as a personal trainer. She liked the idea of owning an F45 franchise because the values were similar to her own. She said: “When I first found out about F45 I was shocked because it’s extremely similar to how I train with my clients, that’s part of the reason why I liked it.” The F45 workouts are functional circuits that compromise over 1000 moves and change regularly to keep participants motivated. “The good thing about F45 is the fact that it’s 45 minutes, it’s not an hour or two. And every session can be different, so it doesn’t get boring. “I went out to the headquarters in LA and it was incredible, I couldn’t believe it. The whole thing is about creating something special for the members. It’s about community. It’s an incredible brand to be a part of.” Jane went into the venture with her husband and sister, who previously worked nine to five in an office job. She added: “Me and my husband have done this together, and I also roped my sister in. I convinced her to quit her office job to help me in the gym.”

The space-efficient Queenax rig in Watford FC’s players’ fitness suite.

Club takes its functional training to a new level WATFORD Football Club has installed a custom space-efficient Queenax rig in its players’ fitness suite. The kit has been introduced in order to maximise strength and functional fitness exercise and accommodate large numbers of players training for both the Premier League and youth teams. Strength and conditioning coach at Watford FC, Jack Baxter, said: “The Queenax rig installed at our club

has become an integral part of our everyday gym planning. It can be used for a various number of tasks and gives us the ability to work a number of players at one time. “With daily gym usage varying from between three to 12 players at any one time, the versatility of the Queenax ensures sessions can be completed efficiently and correctly which is most important in an elite environment.”

FUNCTIONAL TRAINING Handbalancer Sammy Dinneen has performed all over the world, as well as teaching his own group and private classes where participants learn to perfect handstands. He spoke to Workout about why handstands are such good all over body workouts and how gyms can capitalise on this type of class.

Why gyms should consider offering handstand classes Tell us more about your background. How did you get into hand balancing? I was a very active child. I couldn’t sit still. So, when I was a teenager, my mum found a place that offered breakdancing classes and I joined in. This set me on the road that eventually led to hand balancing. I enjoyed dancing so much I went to a dance school in Edinburgh. While there, I was able to watch some of the great shows at the Edinburgh Fringe. Watching those shows made me want to try circus while incorporating my dancing. I auditioned for National Centre for Circus Arts and I was lucky enough to get a place. In the first two terms there you get the opportunity to try lots of different disciplines to see which one suits you best for a possible career. I took to handstands straight away and never looked back. What are the benefits of this type of exercise? Handstands require an incredible amount of balance, body awareness, upper body strength, flexibility and mental strength. It requires a lot of control to carry your whole body on your hands so you have to ensure all the requisite muscles are strong and flexible. As I spend so much time on my hands, when I train overhead work at the gym e.g overhead press or overhead squats, I find it easier than the average gymgoer. I also find core exercises easier than most as I am using my core all the time when performing my handstand feats. Handstands are a great all-round body exercise as they require strength, stamina, passive and active flexibility, mobility and endurance. Can anyone get involved? Anyone can do handstands; it just requires patience, time and dedication. It’s not easy but it’s amazing and I love helping people to master skills that at first seem impossible. This isn’t something you can learn if you only train once a week though. They take time, but they will come and when you start mastering this sport then you will realise the possibilities are endless. How do handstand techniques help with overall strength and fitness? To be able to perform a competent handstand you need to be able to create body tension. In a lot of other training you learn to activate your core but with handstands you learn how to activate the body as a complete unit. From there, you’re able to isolate and move certain body parts. This body tension will help you in so many other ways at the gym, especially with skills like the muscle up, human flag and other body weight exercises. Handstand techniques require flexibility in the shoulders, thoracic and hips – techniques which then crossover into all other sports. By doing handstands, you will gain flexibility in an active way which will make you more mobile and stronger so that it becomes easier to perform certain movements like overhead squats. Tell us more about the classes you run? In these classes I work with my students so they

can understand how to achieve the best alignment to help with balance and to keep their bodies healthy. This involves things like body awareness, strength in the shoulders and core plus gaining flexibility and mobility. We work on how to balance through our fingers and correct ourselves when falling. But the absolute key is that most of my classes are aimed around achieving the elusive press to handstand. What do the classes involve and who are they aimed at? All three classes are different lengths but they’re designed to cater for all levels of fitness and experience. Handstands are a fantastic all-round body workout for individuals who care about their bodies and want to push themselves further – people who enjoy yoga inversions or Pilates core work, those who simply enjoy exercise and want to perfect their strength and flexibility or even professional athletes and acrobats who want to learn something new. How can gyms get involved? What do they need and what are the benefits to operators who include this type of class on their timetables? Handstands are a great thing for gyms to consider offering. You don’t need any specific equipment to learn handstands. You can use equipment to help facilitate certain things it but it is definitely not a necessity – you just need a flat surface and a wall. Handstand classes can help to make clients much more body aware, understand how to create body tension, understand how to work with straight arm strength and how to isolate different body parts. When you’re in a handstand it can be very complicated to understand everything that’s happening but, when you master this, most other exercises then become easier to understand. Also as I said before, gyms don’t need equipment for these classes so they don’t need to put money into anything extra.

SECONDARY SPEND Advertiser’s announcement

How Wattbikes can boost your secondary spend SECONDARY spend activities bring a welcome additional revenue from members and operators, meaning independent club owners and studios could be missing out by not taking advantage of these opportunities. When Places for People pioneered an immersive Wattbike Zone at their state-of-the-art Rotherham site, they introduced Wattbike small group training courses at an extra charge. Fitness manager at Rotherham Leisure Complex Nicholas Bromley said: “We placed two Wattbikes on the gym floor during our renovation in January and we saw such interest, that we installed another eight in our Wattbike Zone when it launched in July last year. “As such a premium offering, we have been able to offer six-week courses for an additional cost to members, especially the keen cyclists who are looking to stay off the roads during winter months. “These sessions are open to members and non-members, and includes fitness testing at the start and end of the course to track improvements and take-away Wattbike programme cards so that attendees can continue to train within the gym or at home if they have a bike.” Places for People’s chief operating officer John Oxley added: “The Zone

was installed in July and the response has been terrific! “Having seen the success in Rotherham, we have already identified a further three opportunities where we can develop Wattbike Zones; either in gyms or studios.” Nuffield Health have also recognised the opportunity for additional revenue from health assessments. Their 360+ Health Assessments are in-depth, and provide the member with a clear picture of their general health and wellbeing, with a focus on cardiovascular health. Using the latest health testing technology, including fitness testing on the Wattbike, the Nuffield team

charge extra to test, discuss and explain results to members. But it’s not just the large operators. Boutique studios and independent clubs have begun to take advantage of the secondary spend opportunities through their personal training offering; placing additional charge on the use of Wattbikes within individual one to one sessions, or within a sport specific training environment. Maximising secondary spend options helps to boost and diversify income and if a clear secondary spend strategy is developed for the long term, it can also directly impact and improve member experience and retention, as well as boost the balance sheet.

Functional Training Gym of the Year sponsored by Jordan The Strength and Conditioning Institute, Kent For any gym contemplating a move to new premises, one of the big worries must be: how many members will move with us? It’s a question Alex Shoebridge and Martin Shyvers had to consider when they decided the time was right to move their club. They needn’t have worried: every single member transferred to the new place. A big part in this successful migration is, they believe, down to the personal service they received at the Strength and Conditioning Institute. The gym’s online presence is also helping

set the gym apart from its rivals – it now has almost 10,000 followers across its various platforms. The end result of the pair’s investment is a very well-equipped gym floor and some highly experienced staff who really are well-placed to help clients achieve their goals. Judge’s comments: “The SCI have gone from strength to strength, doubling membership and premises, as well as tripling their annual turnover. Their professionalism and enthusiasm for fitness and functional training has not gone unnoticed. SCI will certainly be ones to watch for the future.”

Darran Stanesby, Anytime Fitness, Mansfield Darran is truly an inspiration – fighting a constant battle with a rare degenerative brain disease. He was a seemingly fit and healthy rugby coach who trained hard with his squad and went to the gym for strength training purposes until one day in 2000 he was in the gym and suddenly collapsed with a bleed to the brain. After five years he was finally diagnosed with a rare form of ataxia. Since then, he has suffered many, many setbacks, being in and out of hospital and

undergoing many operations – but so determined was he not to give in, when he was first hospitalised he used to order a taxi and sneak out to the gym in the evenings. Darran’s desire to be the best he could be has led to success as a champion wheelchair bodybuilder. A real positive role model. Judge’s comments: “Darran constantly shows in adversity that if you have the right mindset anything is possible. Never do you see him feel sorry for himself and I truly admire his attitude. He is a very special human being.”

Community Involvement sponsored by Matrix Rockets Health and Fitness/Mini Rockets, Coleford Mini Rockets is a child focused section of Rockets Health and Fitness Club and the brainchild of club owner Andy Griffiths and former headteacher Chris Powell. The project offers physically active holiday camps to children, as well as targeted wellbeing interventions for children referred to them by schools and agencies. The sessions focus on a ‘five ways to wellbeing’ approach – take notice, be active, give, connect and keep learning – and sessions have proven to boost the wellbeing of all children, especially those who have been referred because of anxiety, depression and obesity issues.

The scheme also offers schools and children from families already using the gym, the opportunity to train and learn at the main Rockets Gym. In 2017, Mini Rockets received an award for outstanding customer service; coming first out of 550. Judge’s comments: “Engaging children in physical activity and, importantly, keeping them engaged is one of the biggest challenges faced by the health and fitness sector, but it seems they have achieved this with great success. It’s brilliant to see they look beyond simply being more active and have extended their programme to help young people have an increased enjoyment of exercise, self esteem, body image and confidence.”

With classes for children aged five plus, the Body Design Fit team aren’t leaving anyone out, making functional training accessible for all. Judge’s comments: “They have undoubtedly created something very special, led by passion and commitment to make a difference, blended with a depth of skills, resources and knowledge. “The team is definitely a strong team – the business values are clear and strong. Without a doubt, a team making a difference.”

Customer Service Award sponsored by Physique Sports WightFIT, Isle of Wight One thing stood out from the customer service feedback forms WightFIT handed to its members – the sheer amount of questionnaires filled in and the overwhelmingly positive feedback on them. Owner Victoria prides herself on the customer service WightFIT provides – as do her staff. They’re always available to help, they’re laid back, chatty and relaxed, and it helps create an enjoyable atmosphere. The overwhelming message from the feedback forms is that the staff are excellent – and

that’s what customer service is all about. The feedback given suggests that members look forward to coming to the gym, that they enjoy training at WightFIT and wouldn’t leave to go anywhere else. It’s a fantastic place to train and members feel valued. Judge’s comments: “WightFIT had just outstanding client feedback. “The knowledge, compassion and support shone through, and this gym’s customer service without a doubt is genuine, loyal and adds immense value to every member’s life.”

Local Authority/Leisure Trust Gym of the Year sponsored by ServiceSport

Everything you need is under one roof at Fareham Leisure Centre. Top class gym equipment, knowledgeable and friendly staff, a sports hall, a crèche, swimming facilities, squash courts and a café, enough to keep everyone active and occupied. It really has a family feel. It’s no surprise that the membership continues to grow. Its offering is excellent – and that’s why it continues to welcome more members of all

shape, sizes and backgrounds. Staff members are passionate, knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming. It has everything you’d want from a leisure centre and more. Judge’s comments: “There seems to be something for literally everyone, yet no loss in quality of service or value. The testimonials showed great respect and loyalty to the centre, the team a commitment to each other and a huge community vision to support and involve everyone.”

Regional Gym of the Year Scotland sponsored by Script Waterfront Fitness Gym, Inverclyde Over the years, operator Inverclyde Leisure has seen other gyms come and go, but what sets them apart is the ability to adapt. When budget clubs became popular, they decided to create a low cost offering for those who wanted basic membership. This then led to the introduction of a complete range of membership packages, covering the whole spectrum from low cost to premium and positioning the Waterfront Leisure Complex right in the heart of the action as the flagship facility. This is a gym which really cares about its members and the wider community.

Member success stories and positive press coverage are displayed in club, giving everyone who deserves their time in the spotlight a chance to shine. Inverclyde Leisure’s strapline, ‘making life better’ really encapsulates the spirit of this facility. This is a place which does just that. Judge’s comments: “A club firmly centred in the community; with an eye fixed on providing a positive member experience every time. They know their business well and have the required data to justify all developments to the business model and the fitness product. Well devised and excellently executed.”

Gym Based PT sponsored by WorkOut Mike Hind, Mas Body Gym, Middlesbrough Mike’s client success stories cover the whole spectrum of the fitness industry; demonstrating his ability as a trainer to adapt to a wide range of goals and needs. From his gym members who’ve been supported to achieve their weight loss and fitness goals, to his success as a strength and conditioning coach to boxers Kalam and Josh Leather and seeing client Danielle Osborn bring home the title of Body Fitness Champion at the Arnold Classic, he’s had a fantastic year. His business story is also highly commendable and entrepreneurial. Raising

his own capital, as opposed to opting for loans, to open his gym is extremely enterprising. He also takes the time to share his knowledge with his team; ensuring a consistently high standard of service for his members. Judge’s comments: “Mike’s story is very compelling and it is clear through hard work and determination he has become a very successful PT in many ways. “It is also great to see he has passed on his knowledge to other trainers, taking the time to ensure consistency in service at his gym and a sense of giving back to the industry.”

Regional Gym of the Year North sponsored by MindBody Life Leisure Houldsworth Village, Stockport More than just a gym, Life Leisure Houldsworth Village has got the wow factor in abundance. It caters for the hardcore and casual gymgoer and everyone in between, both able bodied and disabled – with both Olympic and Paralympic standard facilities thanks to its partnership with British Weight Lifting. A multi-purpose sports hall and indoor five a side football pitches round off its impressive

offering, whilst its involvement with the local community – particularly its work with young offenders – helps the facility stand out from the crowd. Judge’s comments: “They have made use of a huge facility by creating mini programmes that cater to a large number of community projects. They also have lots of good upcoming ideas, which shows they will keep developing.”

A clear, concise methodology has got results.”

Free up your members ... By John Halls

THERE is no doubt that rising numbers of budget operators has brought an affordable, accessible gym experience to many people. A gym membership is no longer a luxury: everyone seems able to exercise this way if they wish. However, these ‘winning formula’ gym facilities that enjoy economies of scale do run the risk of ‘battery farming’ members who may find themselves working out on rows of cardio machines and stacks of free weights. To maintain members’ interest, we should look to offer a ‘free-range gym’ experience where people can enjoy free movement around the gym floor and the chance to graze on a fresh and varied ‘diet’ of diverse equipment and stations. Providing a broad choice of equipment that encourages and empowers users to enjoy a fantastic experience is relatively easy to achieve – I would say that as a supplier of over 1,800 different pieces of kit, but it’s true. It’s important to supply and install the right balance of equipment creatively to make it accessible in the gym and allow free flow of members around cardio machines, functional zones, strength training areas, rigs, stations and stretch zones. With such choice and freedom to move in the gym comes responsibility by operators to ensure staff are on-hand to guide members. Ours is a people business after all and ‘free range’ members will need encouragement, guidance and support to realise their potential in a gym that offers a wide spectrum of exercise options. For members to fulfil their training aspirations, they need personal attention (as opposed to personal training which few can afford each time they visit the gym). At the same time, instructors need to be empowered to interact with members by gaining new skills and knowledge through training and programming. Our Apex sessions upskill instructors to implement 30-minute, free gym

Puma invests £3.75m in innovative gym chain John Halls floor sessions for small groups using a variety of equipment. With a choice of eight programmes, there is literally something for everyone, enabling members to enjoy personalised training while instructors gain the tools to deliver consistent, quality experiences armed with the latest expert theory and protocols. Apex instructors interact with small groups of people, engage in conversations and sessions with more members and gain confidence to be that rock-star trainer, front and centre, providing an outstanding experience. Instructors should be working the gym floor, not just walking it and sessions such as Apex enable them to do just that. Such individual attention from gym instructors and the personality they bring to the gym can make the scalable, ‘formula’ gyms more engaging. The set-up may look similar, but interaction from instructors make it personal and bespoke. Apex creates mini communities and enables members to experience new kit and enjoy instructor time from which they learn new techniques to train safely and effectively. Supported by confident instructors who are willing to show members options, check their technique and progress and make regular contact, members who enjoy the ‘free range’ experience are gently steered to ensure their workout is a success. n John Halls is managing director of Physical Company. A Sheffield man has lost more than three stone thanks to SIV’s Steel City Fit Club and Fitness Unlimited. Graham Hanson, 67, from Parson Cross, joined the 12-week fitness course to become more involved with his favourite football club, Sheffield United, while getting more active and improving his overall health. Following the course, he joined Fitness Unlimited at Concord Sports Centre, using the knowledge he had learned on the course to lead a healthier lifestyle.

PUMA Investments has completed a £3.75m equity investment in gym operator Sweat! The investment will support Sweat!’s plans to roll out its business to five new locations in the next 12 months; bringing its total to 10 sites since launching at the end of 2013. The Sweat! business model focuses on attracting gymgoers to its aspirational environment at a slight price premium to budget gyms. Facilities include dedicated studios for spinning and aerobics, innovative fitness programmes, such as The Matrix, along with a full range of free weights and Technogym equipment. Chief executive of Sweat! Frank Reed said: “We set-up Sweat! because we

felt that the budget gym sector lacked a fresh, fun and safe environment for women. “Sweat! appeals to both men and women who want to feel more comfortable about going to the gym. We help them improve their general wellbeing and live healthier lives, contributing to a wider range of social benefits. “We’re delighted to have Puma as one of our shareholders and will make its investment in us work as hard as our members do!” The investment includes an option for Puma to make a further equity investment of up to £2.5m after 12 months.
