Anticipation is building for fitness ‘Oscars’ By Christina Eccles EXCITEMENT is building for the 2015 National Fitness Awards, with gyms from all corners of the country preparing to come together and celebrate their achievements at the “Oscars of the fitness industry.” This year’s event, organised by Script Events in partnership with headline sponsor Servicesport, takes place on Friday December 4 at the Athena in Leicester and will be hosted by Olympic swimmer Steve Parry and fitness entrepreneur Katie Bulmer-Cooke. The standard of entries we’ve received is higher than ever and as Workout goes to print, our expert panel of judges are dealing with the tough task of picking the worthy winners in over 20 categories, who will be rewarded with their trophies at the glittering awards’ celebration. NFA judge and multi-award-winning gym owner Steve Johnson revealed why he is looking forward to the evening. He said: “The actual National Fitness Awards ceremony is like no other event I have been to and I can best describe this as ‘the Oscars of the Fitness Industry.’ Trust me when I say don't miss out on this event!” Fellow judge, top personal trainer Kim

Ingleby added: “I feel very honoured to be part of the judging panel for the National Fitness Awards. “Although it's an incredibly tough job to choose a winner with so much talent, knowledge and inspiration from many trainers, clubs and products, it’s exciting to see what's going on first hand. “I thoroughly look forward to being inspired again by the finalists and celebrating on the night.” Shortlisted gyms and personal trainers who haven’t booked their seats yet are being urged to do so as tickets for the big night are selling fast. The National Fitness Conference, taking place at the National Space Centre before the awards in the evening at The Athena is also proving popular, with speakers including awards’ co-host Katie and retention guru Dr Paul Bedford. Event organiser Lucy Dickinson added: “Excitement is really building and I can't wait to welcome everyone back to The Athena. “Don’t leave it too late to book your seat as tickets are selling fast!” I For more information about the National Fitness Conference, see our special feature, starting on page 45 and to book your seats for the NFAs, visit www.nationalfitnessawards.co.uk

ALMOST half of people using a personal trainer would like to have greater contact with them between sessions, a survey has revealed. According to research by GetPTfit, a new online communications toolkit to help personal trainers promote their business, increase income and motivate clients, some 47 per cent of respondents said they would like contact, compared to 53 per cent who felt sessions were sufficient. For 35 per cent of people, they would like the opportunity to ask extra questions, while 24 per cent felt it would help with motivation. 40 per cent said they would like a free app to run alongside their training. Co-founder Simon Whitnall, personal trainer and captain of the England Touch Rugby team, said: “Our survey reveals that clients are becoming more demanding of their personal trainers. “They are keen to access their fitness plans online, receive advice on food and drink and well-being and, most importantly of all, to receive regular motivation to keep pushing themselves towards their goals.”

Hannah reaches final and brings contest to UK By Christina Eccles BUSY gym manager Hannah Bryant has enjoyed a successful few months; making the final of a nationwide competition and helping to bring a top fitness contest to the UK. Hannah, who works at Devon based Winners 2000 Fitness Ltd, was chosen from thousands of applicants to make the top 10 shortlist in Women’s Health’s search for ‘The Body 2015.’ To celebrate her achievement, she was invited to an interview and photoshoot to choose the top five and winner where she met the other finalists and was interviewed by the magazine’s editor and celebrity panel, which included Olympian Victoria Pendleton, TV presenter Amanda Byram and TOWIE star Lucy Mecklenburgh. She said: “It was a great day to meet the other nine inspirational women. The event was so professionally run and the photoshoot was another great experience. “We were asked questions which related to our stories and I had a great response from Victoria Pendleton and Amanda Byram and the editor who seemed really interested in me.” Hannah has also taken on the role of UK event director for Ultimate Fitness Events, a Canadian based natural fitness and bodybuilding organisation, which recently hosted its second event in Birmingham. The UFE European Championships featured categories in Women’s Physique, Figure, Male and Female Fitness Model and Bikini divisions, with this event qualifying overall winners in each category to compete as UFE pros at the UFE World

Three things to consider when running a gym By Olivia Taylor BRANDING, target audience and empowering your staff and members are the three main things to take into consideration when running a gym, according to CEO of LIW and BodyPower Nick Orton. Delegates at his talk at LIW were told that developing and improving their business ideas was key to making them stronger. And when thinking about your target audience, carrying out market research is a cheap way of finding out what kind of person is most likely to come to your gym and what people think of your facility. Nick said: “If you’re running a gym, you need to know exactly who you’re targeting. The people who you think you’re targeting may not be the people who are actually coming. “When you do market research, go out into the community and ask people you don’t know. Don’t ask people that you know, because they’ll tell you what you want to hear.” Once you’ve worked out who your target audience is, focus your brand-

ing around them, was another tip given to independent operators. Nick also told the audience to think about how they want their branding to look and how it should represent exactly what their business does and stands for. He added: “Branding is the fundamental thing to your business. People try and stretch their brand so it appeals to as many people as possible. “Make sure your branding is consistently used. You can’t reinforce your message too much – make your gym as visible as possible.” Using an eye catching logo throughout your premises is a good way to imprint your business in customers’ minds, Nick revealed. Delegates were also informed that their staff are a representation of their club, so it’s important to make sure they engage with members on a regular basis. Nick added: “Do you know your members? Do you interact with them? Do you operate member activities? Do you work with other gyms in the area?”

Almost 3,500 runners took to the starting line for the sixth annual MBNA Chester Marathon. This year also saw the return of the 26.2km MBNA Chester Metric Marathon, which attracted more than 1,100 runners – selling out weeks before the race despite organisers doubling the capacity of this year’s event. A popular fun run – the MBNA Mini Marathon – took place on the same day with 350 children and their families running a onemile lap around Chester Racecourse to help raise money for the race’s 2015 charity partner, the Countess of Chester Hospital’s Babygrow Appeal. Chris Hulse from race organisers Active Leisure Events said: “It’s been an unbelievable weekend of distance races and once again we have to thank the thousands of runners that took part and the spectators that helped create such a wonderful atmosphere right along the route.” Fundraisers taking part in the three events are expected to have raised more than £700,000 for good causes.

Social app motivates users to get fit A NEW social fitness app has launched which motivates users to get fit with the help of likeminded people in their community. The GymPal app connects users with other local fitness enthusiasts who share similar interests or goals. Users are matched with compatible fitness partners based on their fitness and sporting interests, favourite activities, motivation levels and geographical location.

Other features include the ability to find new gyms or exercise classes and to find nutritionists and personal trainers. Users can also find specialist food and supplement stores. Co-founder Mark Spuy said: “Our app aims to encourage a fitter and healthier society. “By offering users the chance to find someone to exercise with, we’re providing a fitness social network that makes a difference.”

Leisure centres encouraged to offer archery Pulse has been appointed by Chesterfield Borough Council to complete a £570K upgrade of the leisure facilities at the Healthy Living Centre and Queen’s Park Sports Centre. The contract will see the existing equipment replaced with brand new kit from Pulse. 50 per cent of the 228 stations across the Healthy Living Centre and Queen’s Park Sports Centre will be IFI accredited to stage two. Work is due to start at the Healthy Living Centre in November and early in the New Year at Queens Park Sports Centre. Following the installations, Chesterfield Borough Council aim to grow their current 5,200 membership base.

Council to invest in leisure offering SEFTON Council is to significantly invest in its leisure offering across the borough in order to improve facilities and better meet the needs of its users. Dunes Splash World, Southport, Crosby Lakeside and Meadows, Maghull have all been identified as suitable for the works following extensive research into fitness trends, public health and customer feedback. Improvements across the sites include a mezzanine floor fitness suite at Dunes Splash World, group fitness studios at Crosby Lakeside and Meadows, plus an equipment refresh. Cabinet member for health and wellbeing Coun. Ian Moncur said:

“These improvement works demonstrate Sefton Council’s commitment to improving public health across the borough even during the current testing times for local Government. “We have a proud history of investing in our leisure infrastructure and we can boast fantastic and unique facilities such as Crosby Lakeside and Litherland Sports Park among our portfolio. “I look forward to the opening of the improved facilities and I hope that Sefton’s residents are as excited as us at this news.” The improvements works are expected to be completed towards the end of 2015 and start of 2016.

By Christina Eccles ARCHERY GB is encouraging leisure centres and other community venues to offer archery as an activity with the launch of its New Places for Target Faces initiative. With an estimated 750,000 people experiencing archery every year, the initiative offers facility owners and operators the support they need to establish archery as an activity at their venues, meeting demand from the 90,000 plus people which Sport England’s Active People Survey identified as being interested in trying the sport. New Places for Target Faces can be delivered in two ways: external providers can deliver a variety of sessions for a venue, or alternatively, those working in leisure, recreation and educational environments can gain an Archery GB Instructor Award, provided by Archery GB, and lead the sessions themselves. Archery retailers can provide all the equipment that venues require, with a basic kit starting from about £1,000. Archery GB is also offering a

number of grants as part of the programme which venues can apply for. Head of development at Archery GB David Reader said: “Archery is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK, with thousands of people attending ‘have a go’ archery events at activity centres, holiday parks, archery clubs and other tourist attractions. “It’s an Olympic and Paralympic sport that appeals to all ages and abilities. “Leisure centres and other community venues are seen as important drivers in the future growth of archery and we’re delighted to help them establish the sport as an activity in venues across the UK, helping them to stand out in a competitive leisure industry.” I Have you introduced an unusual sport or activity into your gym or leisure centre? If so we’d love to hear how things are going. Send your stories to ce@scriptmedia.co.uk or contact us on Facebook or Twitter and you could appear in a future issue of the magazine.

Operator signs up to scheme that promotes mental health A SHEFFIELD charity which operates leisure facilities all across the region has highlighted its commitment to promoting positive mental health and wellbeing by signing up to a national sports initiative. Sheffield City Trust, which operates venues including Ponds Forge International Sports Centre and the English Institute of Sport – Sheffield, has become a member of the Mental Health Charter for Sport and Recreation. The scheme, created by the Sport and Recreation Alliance in partnership with the Professional Players Federation and mental health charity Mind, shows how sport can use its collective power to tackle mental ill health and the stigma surrounding it. It aims to ensure that the sports sector can help make mental health a commonly understood matter and actively tackle discrimination to ensure that everyone is treated with dignity and respect. Healthy partnerships manager at Sheffield City Trust, Rob Womack, said: “By becoming a part of this national scheme, we aim to show how sport and recreation not only improves physical health but can also contribute to good mental health and wellbeing as well. “SCT believes it is vital that everyone has the chance to take part in and benefit from sport and recreation. “We therefore aim to promote and adopt good mental health policies and best practice to ensure that people affected have the same opportunities across our venues than anyone else.”

Super Bowl winner launches ‘game changer’ kit at LIW By Christina Eccles SUPER Bowl winner Brady Poppinga launched a new piece of fitness equipment into the UK market at this year’s Leisure Industry Week; describing it as a ‘game changer’ for gyms and their members. The XPT was designed by Brady to enhance his own speed, power and explosiveness as a professional athlete and is now available to the fitness industry, via supplier Rubicon Sports. The power rack combines the benefits of free weights with the safety of machine weights by including a patented quad lock braking system with a linear guided barbell. The barbell is incorporated into the rack and enables vertical, horizontal, diagonal, lateral and rotational bar movement, engaging all muscle groups as in free weight training. The patented quad lock braking system incorporates two levers on the bar. These are closed by the hands as they grip the bar and when braking is required, simply opening the hand automatically releases the lever and engages four solid steel locking pins, catching and stopping the bar in any position. Brady explained: “The XPT is a game changer. It combines the safety of a machine with the benefits of free weight training in one compact unit. “The biggest thing for clubs is that it creates the feeling that they care about their members. For gym own-

Brady Popping with the XPT power rack that he designed. ers, there’s also that sense of peace of mind. Members can lift in a way that’s beneficial and safe.” According to Brady, the response to the product so far has been ‘amazing’ and he told Workout, he enjoyed chatting to people on the show floor to explain the benefits of introducing the kit into their gyms. He added: “It’s been great to see people’s reactions. It’s so unique as users can lift in a way that’s safe, without any compromises – it combines the best of both worlds.” Director at Rubicon Sports David Shaw added: “Having met Brady in Germany at FIBO, we were very excited about taking on the distribution of this fantastic innovation. “At LIW, we had such a great

response to the XPT and it was really nice to have all our positive thoughts confirmed by such a large cross section of the health and fitness industry. Two unrelated people went as far as to say that this was the best piece of equipment they had seen at LIW in their 20 years of coming to the show. “Because of the safety of the breaking system combined with the free flowing barbell, it fills the needs of all the gym users from the novice to the performance athlete. “We see the XPT having a place in every gym in the country from schools, colleges, corporates to health and fitness clubs and sports clubs and so we are looking forward to a busy time and some very happy customers in the next few years.”

Gym gets hands-on with its sponsorship of half marathon TONBRIDGE gym The Strength and Conditioning Institute was a true hands-on sponsor of the Tonbridge Half Marathon, providing a free stretching and mobility facility for runners to use both before and after the race.

Up to 1500 runners took on the 2015 event, which this year celebrated its fifth annual race. Director and head coach Alex Shoebridge said: “The buzz at the Athletes’ Village this year was amazing, and is a tribute to runners, sup-

porters and the organisers. We are so proud to have been involved, and to be able to personally congratulate and chat to so many runners as they recovered after the race was a real privilege. Congratulations to all who took on such a challenging course.”

Take a creative approach with middle-aged clients By Olivia Taylor PERSONAL trainers should take a more creative and adaptable approach to get the best out of their middle aged clients, according to an expert. Anne Elliot, who is programme leader, Msc sport, exercise and physical activity for special populations at the London Sports Institute, Middlesex University, was among the speakers at this year’s Leisure Industry Week, providing industry insights to event visitors. During her seminar she advised delegates to keep their middle aged clients coming back by making sure they were enjoying their sessions, as

well as feeling motivated. She said: “Just because we enjoy physical activity doesn't mean our clients do – not everyone likes physical activity as much we do.” Personal trainers need to be prepared to change their clients’ workout the minute they walk through the door, Anne told listeners. She added: “Your middle aged clients don’t want to be trained like your 20 year old clients, they’re going to have different goals.” Although trainers build a close relationship with clients they were told to remember what they’re qualified in and stick to that. Anne added: “Be a good motivator,

but stick to your job boundaries. You’re a personal trainer, not a marriage counsellor or a medic.” It’s also important for clients to report any health issues that will affect their training to their personal trainer, Anne told delegates. She added: “The route to success with this group isn’t progression it’s regression. I’ve had clients who’ve managed to do a press up and that’s been a big deal to them.” I How do you engage different age groups in physical activity? We’d love to hear from you. Email your thoughts to ot@scriptmedia.co.uk and you could appear in a future issue of Workout.

Bridging the gap between old school gym and new commercial ones A GYM in Stoke is going from strength to strength; aiming to create the best environment possible for members who are serious about their training. Strength Asylum, which is among the clubs battling it out for a 2015 National Fitness Award at the event on December 4, was opened by Andy Parker in 2012. He explained: “I wanted to bridge the gap between the original old school gym and the new commercial gyms. I looked at what we thought were the good and bad points from all the gyms out there and put them in order of priority. “If I was going to compete in such a competitive market at the highest level only the best equipment will do for members that are serious about training. As a fun way to get a full body workout, pole fitness is growing in popularity, with more studios opening around the country and even forward thinking gyms adding it to their timetables. Workout tried out the trend. Instructor Kirsty teaching the WorkOut team some pole fitness moves.

Why Kirsty is in pole position INSTRUCTOR Kirsty Griffiths got bitten by the pole bug about seven years ago before it became the mainstream fitness concept it is today. Wanting to learn the techniques after initially seeing a performance on a night out with friends, she signed up to classes taking place in local nightclubs. But as she became skilled enough to teach sessions herself, she realised the space available in those sort of venues wasn’t the most suitable for her and she’d prefer teaching in a professional studio in order to help

students get the best out of her classes. She explained: “I got into pole for the fitness side and didn’t want to be in nightclubs. I wanted to change people’s perceptions.” After teaching classes in local dance studios, she eventually found the perfect premises in Barnsley, and set up Rainbow Pole Fitness, alongside business partner Kirsty Marsden. The pair also gained their pole fitness qualifications through X-POLE’s XPERT Pole Fitness programme – one of the largest pole fitness certifications in the world and the only pole

fitness qualification in the industry. Kirsty added: “It’s so much more reputable now than it ever used to be. For people to be able to take pole fitness seriously, it’s important to go down the right channels.” With pole fitness now in the limelight more than ever, this type of class could be perfect for gyms looking for something different to add to their timetables, according to the experts at X-POLE. International marketing spokesman Kash Suntharamoorthy said: “Pole dancing as a form of fitness has

become increasingly popular – a fact reflected by the increase in the number of schools and studios opening up across Europe as well as some of the major gyms, such as GymBox in London and David Lloyd, offering pole fitness classes. “After leaving school or higher education, group exercise options are more limited for women unless they take part in Zumba, Pilates or similar. “This is where pole fitness comes in: by providing a friendly, non-competitive and most of all fun way to get a total body workout.”

Fitness classes offering a spin with a difference By Christina Eccles WHEN I first asked the question to my colleagues and friends, ‘Do you want to try a pole fitness class?’, the response was a resounding yes; proving there’s a definite appetite for this type of workout. Having never tried a class like this before, none of us really knew what to expect. But we did know that we were excited and eager to give it a go. We were lucky enough to be attending a private session at Rainbow Pole Fitness in Barnsley, taught by Kirsty, which was great because as we were all beginners, it meant we could benefit from extra attention from our instructor. And it eliminated that fear factor of being worried everyone else in the class would be better than we were. Following a warm up and a quick demonstration from Kirsty, we were able to have a go

at some actual pole work, trying out spins and climbs and getting to grips with some of the basic movements. We also got to have a go at a headstand, leaning against the pole – with various levels of success! Mine was definitely a bit wobbly but my friend Sam proved a natural and held the steadiest pose out of all of us. Kirsty was a great instructor – motivating and enthusiastic – and was happy to talk us through the movements and demonstrate them as many times as we needed. It was also clear she was passionate about pole fitness and the benefits of getting involved in classes and that enthusiasm was infectious. We all left the session saying how much we had enjoyed it and after posting some of our pictures on social media, many of our friends said they’d also be keen to give it a go. With pole fitness still being a relatively unusual concept in our area, we’ll definitely be helping to spread the word about how much fun the classes are. And with Kirsty’s studio also offering the amazing sounding aerial hoop sessions, we’re already planning a return trip; so watch this space to see how we get on in a future challenge!

New event is launched for industry LEISURE-net Solutions has launched a new one-day industry networking event. Building on Leisure-net’s successful two-day active-net conference, Innovate 2016 will take place in Burleigh Court, Loughborough University during March next year. It will enable operators to formally meet with up to nine suppliers, maximising their time and building relationships that could help add non-sporting physical activity opportunities to their facilities, such as spas, soft and outdoor play, adventurous family activities and 10-pin bowling. Suppliers already committed to the new event include Alliance Leisure, which focuses on facility development for local authorities, education and leisure trusts that want to improve their offering. CEO Sarah Watts said: “We have been very impressed by active-net and how valuable the event has become in helping to grow our network, and so we are really pleased to support Innovate 2016. “It represents a great opportunity for us to share the innovation we deliver with many more organisations.”

Successful gym doubles in size to meet demand By Olivia Taylor A SUCCESSFUL functional training gym has almost doubled the size of its premises due to an increase in demand. Personal training studio 365 Functional Fitness opened in Worksop two-and-a half-years ago to provide locals with a different kind of exercise. Members have access to a range of functional equipment such as kettlebells and battle ropes to cardio equipment. A range of effective classes are also on offer such as Tabata, Spinning and Boxercise. Owner Howard Hill said: “We’ve got a lot of competition in regards to gyms in the area, but we don’t need to worry too much, we’re a personal training gym, we’re bespoke. “I used to work at Bannatyne’s but I wanted to shy away from the machine style training. We specialise in the more functional side of things.” The expansion has seen the facility go from 800 sqft to 1,400 sqft, providing users with a new personal training studio and sports therapy room that offers sports massages, acupuncture and physiotherapy. ACE report on wearable devices and the fitness industry By Dave Wright WHETHER counting calories, steps or carbs, fitness consumers seem to love tracking their efforts and their progress. It’s no wonder that wearable activity devices are becoming ubiquitous, both inside and outside the gym. According to the Consumer Electronics Association, revenues from fitness and activity tracking devices, which include fitness activity bands, smartwatches and smart eyewear, will reach over £3b in 2015. These numbers will only continue to grow as a wider array of products enter the market and consumer awareness grows. The idea at the foundation of the development of these products is that continual awareness of one’s lifestyle habits provides ongoing motivation and guidance These devices can be used as a means of more efficient and effective interaction with health and fitness professionals, as they provide a means for clients to track their physical activity and nutrition habits when they are away from the gym. This gives you, the health and fitness professional, access to important data that was previously only available via the client’s self-reporting—a potentially biased and unreliable process. The consumer has clearly embraced wearable activity devices, so it must become our mission to determine how to integrate the technology into training programs, facility memberships and everyday client interactions. Recently the American College of Exercise (ACE) conducted a survey amongst all its instructors asking their perception about technology.

Dave Wright The three key areas that they focused on where: 1. How can wearable devices positively impact your business? 2. How can these devices help your clients achieve sustained success with their goals? 3. What gaps do you see in the overall integration within the fitness industry And the results were summarised here: I 71 per cent have had clients ask about wearable devices yet only 51 per cent are prepared to answer. I 86 per cent said that there should be a single platform to gather their clients’ data however only 44 per cent would be prepared to pay for it. I 75 per cent said that they would be willing to run competitions with their clients using wearables. I 71 per cent said that they would allow clients to purchase devices directly or through a voucher code and 74 per cent would if there was a

possibility of earning revenue. According to the survey, the most common gaps with wearable devices: 1. Accuracy 2. Inability to track all activity 3. Consumer education So the bottom line from the report is that these results show that the majority of health and fitness professionals are hearing questions from clients about wearable activity devices, but that the professionals do not always feel qualified or educated enough to answer those questions. In addition, consumers appear to be unsure how to choose which device matches their individual needs, and they are not always sure how to best use the devices once they buy them. This suggests that better education is needed for everyone involved so that clients and trainers are making the most of their investments in this technology. Getting the data is not enough on its own, which is why the fitness industry would be wise to truly embrace the use of wearable activity devices and develop a process through which the numbers can transform into programming and progression – and eventual goal attainment. Former nurse builds new career in fitness industry A FORMER nurse has revealed why the gamble to quit her job as a quality control analyst in order to follow her passion and take up a career in health and fitness has now paid off. Sharon Clare is now not only a personal trainer but also a natural international physique competitor, having won both the British Natural Body Building Federation’s Final and Miss Britain Physique. She explained: “My background prior to personal training was in medical health and science. I originally trained as a registered nurse, and then went on to work as a pharmacy assistant before becoming a QC analyst. In my spare time I would regularly weight train as I had always been interested in sports and fitness. “The trigger point for me would be when I competed in and won the British Natural Body Building Federation’s Final in 2004 and became Miss Britain Physique 2004. The risk of leaving my well paid full time job to become a self-employed personal trainer was definitely something that I had to seriously consider. However I realised that if I could achieve these incredible fitness goals

Sharon Clare then I could use my years of experience and knowledge to help others achieve theirs.” Sharon then went on to complete her Diploma in Personal Training and Sports Massage in late 2004 with Premier Training International and went on to become a successful PT at

her local fitness facility in Bury St Edmunds, training a wide variety of clients. Since then Sharon has also gone on to complete further courses including Advanced Nutrition for Physical Performance, Viper Training and the Community Health and Wellness Certificate and has her own business, Body Coach Fitness. She added: “My business currently involves both specialist face to face and online personal training and nutritional advice. We work using a more holistic approach to fitness and wellbeing, aiming to promote a healthy, active lifestyle and to get more people more active more often. “For me, the most rewarding part about being a personal trainer is seeing someone achieve their personal, fitness and weight loss goals and being a large part of this life changing health and wellness process/journey. “I want to be able to provide an expert service at an affordable price without compromising on quality. I am so glad I took the decision to leave my old job and pursue a career in something that I was truly passionate about.”

How to raise your profile in your area: using local media By Dawn Tuckwell, director, Action PR PUBLICITY could be closer than you think... While everyone knows the benefit of media coverage, sometimes it’s easy to overlook the sheer potential and impact of the local media. It may seem like a nice idea to get a mention in a national newspaper and for brand awareness and part of a bigger campaign is fantastic to have. However, realistically, a news piece in your local paper – be it in print or online – will reach more people who are likely to engage directly with your site simply due to geography. Local press coverage can be relatively easy to come by if you can dedicate some time to get to know the media and understand what they are looking for. The frequency of publication (weekly in print and daily online) give you ample opportunity to develop a nice relationship of regular news creation to your local audience. People often say to me they don’t have any stories to share. Well stop a moment and think what’s happening right now at your facility? What’s on your notice board? The home page of your website? What posters are in reception and (let’s be honest here) pasted up in the men’s and ladies’

changing room doors!? If you have improvement work underway, upgraded kit installed or new classes on the timetable, you have a story – particularly if any of these things are unique to your site or unusual in the area. Charity coffee mornings, swimming, cycling or fitness class ‘marathons’ are also welcome news. Not to mention the success of individuals including weight loss, health rehabilitation, sporting success and the completion of physical feats by colleagues and members. All the things people chat about in reception, stories told over a coffee in the café or before the class starts – these little nuggets that interest colleagues and friends may be appreciated by a wider audience. Start by picking up your local paper and reading it. Look at the stories they cover, the charities they support and the regular sections they run – some have a lifestyle/health and wellbeing section. If you can offer some advice and ‘top tips’ on topical subjects such as beating the Christmas bulge, sticking to your New Year resolutions, slimming for spring or keeping kids active, offer it to the paper. Your fitness experts and personal trainers have expertise that can be shared and valued. Do a bit of homework first: call up the local papers’ editorial teams and

Don’t be afraid to invite your local reporter and press photographer to your site to report on key activities: they often like to get their own comments from people and photos from an event. Strength in numbers ... By Mark Laws, Jordan Fitness HOPEFULLY nobody reading this is stupid enough to claim they know everything about every part of the industry. So that means we all have room to learn something new. What I have learned recently is that there are some areas of the fitness industry that I have never really liked – and because I have had so little involvement with them for so many years, I saw them as inferior. The good news is that I am willing to openly admit that I was wrong to look down on ANY part of the industry. The bad news is that I don’t think I am the only person to have dismissed other areas just because they aren’t my cup of tea… The area I am referring to is group exercise. Having recently been invited to teach PowerWave sessions at two Fitness Fiesta events I have been exposed to group exercise in it’s full glory and nobody was as surprised as me at how impressed I was. I grew up in a backwards country town where it was cool to ignore girls even into your late teens and your ability to play rugby dictated how popular you were – needless to say when I embarked on my fitness career 10 years ago I felt far more comfortable in the free weight zone

(with sweaty men wearing ill-fitting vests) than the studio where people (women, in tight lycra bottoms and illuminous baggy tops) danced and whooped and jumped around.) There were some women who ventured into the free weights area, wanting to become strong, but we made them feel so uncomfortable that they left and went back to their elliptical trainers. There were some men who ventured into the studio, emerging as a modern day Pied Piper being followed by a sea of pink vests and neon head bands. “He must be gay” we thought…before drooling over each other’s rippling biceps and singing along to Alanis Morissette. Yes, I know it’s ironic. Well it’s too late for me to go back and be the guy being chased around by an army of women (those brave souls were mavericks and deserved all the benefits they received). But it is not too late to have seen the light and develop a huge amount of respect for group exercise. I have been so lucky to work my way up to the top of the pyramid, working with athletes competing in World Cups, Olympic Games and International Championships. I also saw this as the pinnacle of the industry and in terms of ‘performance’ I guess it is. But only around 0.1 per cent of all people

Mark Laws who ever do ‘exercise’ will ever come close to competing at this level - so it is most certainly a finite market. Think about all the reasons the other 99.9 per cent of people exercise – lack of confidence? No selfesteem? Unhappy? No social life? These might not be YOUR reasons to exercise, but they are somebody’s. As fitness professionals we need to understand that just because we eat, sleep and breathe what we do the vast majority of people absolutely dread it – and because they don’t like it they dismiss it – just because it isn’t their cup of tea…sound famil-

iar???!!! I have a few golden rules upon which I base all of my training: 1. Is it safe? 2. Is it fun? 3. Is it effective? 4. Is it becoming a habit? As long as these rules are obeyed does it really matter whether someone does Zumba, or CrossFit, or Aqua, or Spinning, or Body Pump, or Bodybuilding etc etc etc? I am extremely proud of the high profile athletes I have worked with and would encourage any ambitious fitness professional to work towards the top of their game. However I also have the utmost respect for the instructors who are there for the vast vast majority of people who don’t have goals anywhere near as specific – they just want to have fun, smile with their friends, have the confidence to walk into a gym without being intimidated or to feel a little less guilty about the cake they scoffed at lunch time. The PowerWave and Fitness Fiesta has truly opened my eyes to the power of group exercise and everything that comes with it. I might not be wearing lycra anytime soon and you won’t see me dancing around a studio either – but I am as proud of my involvement in group exercise as I am of any athlete I helped to win an Olympic medal. I For details on any upcoming PowerWave courses email mark.laws@jordanfitness.co.uk now.

‘Nurture your team with love and care rather than fear ...’ By Olivia Taylor HUMAN interaction and customer experience are the keys to improving your brand, according to the director of a successful fitness company. Managing director of Evolve Manchester, Phil Hanna, told delegates during a seminar at Leisure Industry Week, that their attitude has a knock on affect throughout their club. He explained that everything down to where you place yourself on the gym floor and in the office can have an effect on your team and members. He said: “Treat your staff like you want your customers to be treated; we need to cascade the love of success to our members and staff. “The leader shouldn’t be at the top, it should be in the centre, at the heart. Nurture your team with love and care rather than fear. Be the guardian of your company,

don’t be the director.” Price and location of your club isn’t a big deal breaker anymore, according to Phil, who added it depends on how the member is treated by the people they come into contact with. He advised those who enter the facility should empower each other. He added: “Proximity isn't important anymore, people want to go to the gym where conversation exists. Make a place where they feel at home.” And he added that making sure staff and members have a good experience at the gym, will make them feel more comfortable and more likely to come back. “Set and maintain clear boundaries and expectations for staff and members. Make them feel like they’re part of something. Feed from the industry and feed into the industry.”

Gearing up for cycling surge

Dani King using the Matrix IC7 indoor cycle.

EDINBURGH Council’s leisure facilities are preparing for an increase in the popularity of cycling by installing top-of-the-range indoor cycles in two of its clubs. Cycling is a key element of Edinburgh Council’s Physical Activity and Sports Strategy, and, combined with goals of increasing facility visits to 5m by the end of 2016, and becoming the most physically active city in Europe by 2020, the city’s leisure services team is looking for innovative ways to engage local people in exercise. As part of this, facilities at the council’s Leith Victoria site have been refurbished and now include 50 Matrix IC7 indoor cycles, which are endorsed by Olympic gold medallist, Dani King MBE. The bikes have also been installed at the Craiglockhart Leisure and Tennis Centre. Fitness manager at Edinburgh Leisure David McLean said: “We know customers love the exhilarating experience of cycling, the team spirit of the fitness class and the very real results they can achieve. We continue to look at ways to improve customer experiences, and are confident these new Matrix IC7 cycles are going to enhance classes even more.” Head of sales for Scotland at Matrix Fitness Chris Maule added: “Cycling has had a massive surge in popularity over recent years, and as a company that is heavily involved with the cycling community through our sponsorship of Olympic champions Dani King and Laura Trott OBE, and the Matrix Fitness Pro cycling team, we are delighted to be working with Edinburgh City Council to encourage more people to engage in cycling-related fitness pursuits.”

Getting mums on their bikes puts centre in the running By Christina Eccles FLEMING Park Leisure Centre’s innovative mum and baby indoor cycle classes have been nationally recognised, following their success at getting new mums into exercise. The sessions have made the final three shortlist for Project of the Year at the annual Sportivate Awards and, having become County and South East Regional winners, the project will now learn its final position at the National Sportivate Awards Ceremony, to be held at the Houses of Parliament in December. The project was launched in January at the centre, in partnership with Eastleigh Borough Council’s SportWorks programme, who secured Sportivate funding from Sport Hampshire and IOW. The idea was to find a way for new mothers who were starting or returning to exercise to do so as easily and enjoyably as possible, initially targeting young mums aged 16-25 due to the high rate of teenage pregnancy identified in the Eastleigh area. The music, lights, and room layout, are all modified to enable mums to participate in a spin class whilst bringing their babies along in their buggies or car seats, meaning there’s no need to find childcare. The classes have received positive reviews across the borough and Fleming Park now deliver three

classes per week. SportWorks activator at Eastleigh Borough Council Harry Lee said: “We are delighted that the Mum and Baby Cycle project has been recognised not only regionally, but also on a national scale. It is the dedicated staff and the continual effort that the teams have put into making the classes a success which make it an incredibly rewarding scheme and we look forward to

rolling out further successful initiatives across the borough.” Partnerships director at Places for People Leisure, which operates the centre, Rich Millard, added: “It is tremendous news that our project at Fleming Park has received such recognition, as we recognise the impact that these classes have had upon the local community in Eastleigh. “It’s the passion and genuine

desire to provide opportunities for men and women to take part in physical activity which is the cornerstone of this achievement. “We hope that through this, we can encourage other centres to engage with customers during traditional ‘down time’ in spin studios as well as introducing mums to use these facilities for all their children’s activities as they get older.”

England Rugby looking for female conversions ENGLAND Rugby has launched its new women and girls’ programme Pitch up and Play, designed to get 10,000 more women into the sport by 2017. Free sessions are open to women of all abilities and participants are encouraged to play to their strengths; whether they’re fast, agile, tall or strong. The key focus is encouraging

women into the sport with inclusive, enjoyable and informative sessions, whether they’re brand new to rugby, a supporter or a returning player. With an introduction to tackling, Pitch up and Play also includes skills, fitness and match play whilst building confidence and providing a playing field for women and girls to discover what makes them strong. Players will also be able to select a

‘motivation band’ on arrival which helps them to shape the tone of the session themselves depending on whether they are just looking fun, want to compete or focus on fitness. This ensures that each person attending gets exactly what they want from the session, making it more likely they will come back. England Rugby’s Alex Teasdale said: “We’ve seen a fantastic growth in the

sport over the past few years, and the women’s World Cup win last year certainly gave us a massive boost and well deserved profile for the game. “Our aim with Pitch up and Play is to make Rugby accessible and attractive to women of all abilities, whilst also positioning the sport as an opportunity for women to be proud of, and portray their inner toughness, strength and athleticism.”

And the 2015 show was no exception, with visitors flocking to hear from the likes of Rugby World Cup winner Ben Cohen and a host of stellar names from the worlds of sport and business. As part of the show’s education programme, visitors could hear from the likes of Zoe Smith, Sally Gunnell, Laura Bassett, Karen Carney and Lucy Martin who participated in a panel discussion debating the future of women in sport. Boxing champion David Haye also made a surprise appearance as a host of industry experts led seminars on a huge range of topics from affiliate and digital marketing to resourcing rehabilitation, increasing participation, professionalising the professionals, strategies for personal trainers and developing a champion’s mindset. Keynote speakers included Kellie Maloney, Stuart Pearce and David Moorcroft, while the show floor was a hub of activity with demonstrations and new product launches sitting alongside a concept spa area, pool area and innovative turnstile and locker systems. In the fitness and nutrition zone, the latest cutting edge, innovative equipment was put through its paces while in sports and physical activity, inclusion for all age groups, outdoor recreation and the education and engage-

ment of children from primary school upwards was a key focus. The interactive group training area was one of LIW 2015’s hottest tickets with live workouts and Q&A sessions. It sat alongside the club showcase, a concept gym showing how to future proof your facility. All areas maintained their focus on providing secondary spend seminars, with an emphasis on industry growth

and diversity from some of the industry’s most respected names. BodyPower founder and CEO Nick Orton said: “We were confident that LIW had huge potential going into this year’s event and that opinion has only been reinforced during two packed days. “Our tailored educational programmes, star-studded keynote theatre, exciting interactive areas and ground breaking product launches from exceptional brands made the show a clear success.” Following this year’s success, the

team is already looking forward to next year’s LIW and building on what has already been achieved. Nick added: “We’re already planning next year’s event and have some fantastic new additions to make the 2016 LIW even bigger and better. “2015 was always going to be about consolidating the show before growing it to its full potential. I think we’ve gone beyond that this year with significant show growth.” Leisure Industry Week will return to Birmingham’s NEC on September 2021 2016.

Industry ‘missing a trick’ over healthy eating options By Olivia Taylor PERSONAL trainers and gym owners are being urged to provide nutritional advice and healthy eating options to their members to help them achieve results. High performance nutrition and training consultant Alex Ferentinos addressed industry professionals at this year’s Leisure Industry Week at the NEC, to tell them how the industry is missing a trick when it comes to

offering members healthy food; keeping them coming back to the gym to train and refuel. He said: “People don’t want to be throwing chicken and brown rice down their neck every day, it’s boring and it’s not sustainable. It doesn’t have to be like that, it can be interesting and delicious.” Many gyms have on site eating facilities, but only a few of these facilities provide suitable meals for members before and after they’ve

He added: “There seems to be a situation now, gyms are providing their members who want serious results with meal options like fish and chips.” But, according to Alex, in order to boost sales and increase secondary spend opportunities gym owners could offer their members tailored meals depending on their goals, eating habits and preferences. He added: “Think about different

people and their allergies, do you have added flour and sugar? “When it comes to nutrition you can’t just think it’s black and white. There’s many shades of grey inbetween.” I What do you think? Instructor offers healthy heart group A LAKE District exercise instructor is encouraging Cumbrian residents to look after themselves by offering a healthy heart exercise group in Windermere. Libby Dixon, who recently ran the Great North Run, raising £400 for the British Heart Foundation, is a British Association of Cardiac Rehabilitation trained exercise instructor and is keen to raise awareness of the healthy hearts class for local people.?She said: “Healthy Hearts is a community based exercise group offering a safe and effective exercise programme for those who have recently had treatment, e.g, a coronary heart bypass or heart attack and have completed the cardiac rehabilitation exercise programme with their local hospital. “It is also suitable for those who suffer from high blood pressure, angina, have a pace maker or any risk factors of coronary heart disease. Many attendees come to improve their current lifestyle, or simply, because they wish to become more active.”

STUART Cain and his partner Jodie Ambrose have opened the first HITZone Studio in Telford, with ambitious plans for a national network. He said: “I have been in the fitness industry for a few years now and have always had the ambition to own my own facility. “The HITZone concept is built around the HIT Machine, a super high intensity training machine. We train clients in small groups of up to four and our sessions are led by a personal trainer using a heart rate monitoring system. “With the help of the HIT Machine team we were able to raise funds to set up our studio with Virgin Start Up. Training at the HITZone is very different as we focus on intensity in the short sessions, which are just 30 minutes long and at a price point that our customers love.” The HIT Machine uses hydraulics to create resistance and forces are automatically adjusted to the individual in response to their strength and the

forces they apply. This concentric movement reduces muscle damage and more importantly, post exercise pain (DOMS). Elite athlete to couch potato, gym bunny to old age pensioner, the HIT Machine makes high intensity training available to all. Offering 40 plus HIT exercises, the

machine gives clients a unique and scientifically backed form of exercise following the latest exercise protocol. With a small footprint, it's the perfect solution for a boutique HIT studio. ‘Work experience more important than qualifications’ By Christina Eccles WORK experience is more important than academic qualifications, according to operators taking part in the latest Fitness Industry Confidence Survey. The research, carried out by industry insight specialist Leisurenet Solutions in collaboration with Leisure Industry Week and Lifetime Training, showed work experience was the most important attribute a school leaver could have when applying for a job for 47 per cent of respondents, compared to just 15 per cent saying academic qualifications. Client services director at Lifetime Training Nigel Wallace said: “Relevant experience has always been an important component within service based industries but the margin in this finding is still surprising. It really suggests that

skill and knowledge based training integrated within the work setting is perhaps the most effective means to build talent within an organisation.” The survey, which questioned a range of both private and public sector operators, showed the health and fitness industry is also buying into the Government’s commitment to deliver 3m apprenticeships during the term of the parliament, with 27 per cent of operators already committed to recruiting apprentices and 45 per cent considering it. However, while 62 per cent of organisations questioned know how to recruit an apprentice, 45 per cent were unsure or unaware of how to implement an apprentice scheme, showing work still needs to be done to ensure the Government’s places are taken up by the industry.

Nigel added: “Whilst our industry has been getting more involved in apprenticeships over the past few years these figures suggest many operators are still missing out on the opportunity. “Getting started for an employer couldn’t be easier, as all the challenges involved in dealing with audits, compliance, funding and such like are absorbed by the training provider.” The survey also revealed that overall, confidence in the industry is up, with 34 per cent stating they felt more confident and 49 per cent feeling the same as three months ago. Operators are more confident about the future of their individual businesses too, with 27 per cent saying they were more confident than three months ago and 55 per cent saying they felt the same.

Confidence in their primary and secondary income streams is growing too (24 per cent and 20 per cent respectively), although most (59 per cent and 63 per cent) feel the same. Interestingly 37 per cent of respondents believe they will employ more staff in 12 months time than they do now. Director of Leisure-net Solutions Mike Hill added: “It’s really pleasing that confidence in the sector is on the increase, and seems particularly buoyed by better development of secondary income streams. “The key challenge, as ever, is member retention, but there seems to be increasing recognition that we need to employ the right staff, with good experience and communication skills, and continue to coach and train them in customer experience delivery if we are going to create a great customer experience.”
