n the prior 25 installments of Dancing With the Stars, athletes have won an astonishing 10 times (see below), so it was only a matter of time before ABC presented a season dedicated to sporty folks. For Season 26, 10 athletes from all corners of the sports world will team up with professional dancers to compete for the coveted Mirrorball Trophy. ABC hasn’t revealed the names of participants, but it’s a safe bet that we’ll see a few contestants fresh from the Winter Olympics. And since the NFL has now reinstated touchdown celebrations, we hope to see a few current or former football players who are eager to dust off or pick up a few moves. So whether you prefer your shuffles to be jazz, Ickey or Super Bowl, this season of Dancing With the Stars (Mondays beginning April 30) will be packed with jock jams and jammin’ jocks.

WHAT’S NEW

1. LIVE IN CONCERT

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR

“It’s pretty amazing that now I get to have my name on it as a producer,” Neil Meron says of Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert, his live, three-hour musical production for NBC that will air, appropriately, on Easter Sunday. “In 1971, I saw it [on Broadway] five times. And then, I think I’ve seen just about every [major] production, including the film. … Superstar’s always been a part of my life.” Meron is recalling how Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s classic rock opera based on Gospel accounts of the final week of Jesus’ life has affected him ever since he first heard the original concept album in 1970. That album went on to become a Tonynominated Broadway production the following year and a Golden Globe-nominated film in 1973. 4

This production, which also boasts Webber and Rice as executive producers, includes some powerhouse names: Music superstar John Legend, who is also producing, stars in the divine title role; Grammy-nominated singer/ songwriter Sara Bareilles is Mary Magdalene; and legendary rocker Alice Cooper portrays King Herod. In terms of musical content, Meron assures Superstar fans that this production will remain “100 percent intact.” But when it came to the presentation itself, the producer explains that Webber and Rice wanted this incarnation “to be somewhat raw and somewhat stripped down.” This “rawness” will include interactivity with the live audience, Meron says. Game of Thrones’ Richard Dormer stars in this time-jumping, six-part thriller as a disfigured U.K. police detective who’s obsessed with finding an acid-attack serial killer who’s responsible for his own disfigurement. Told mostly in reverse order, with the killer being apprehended, something just doesn’t add up. That’s when the series stops, and reverses in a fast-paced whodunit thinker. On the heels of her GLAAD Media Award-nominated 2017 documentary Gender Revolution, the veteran journalist hits the road again, unpacking other social issues that both inspire and undermine unity in our “United” States via the people who are living examples of these societal changes. Says Couric of her return to field reporting, “A lot of it now is in studios, with experts and talking heads — people who have a lot of interesting things to say — but they’re not exactly living these problems out loud, every day.” Premieres on National Geographic April 11

Elvis Presley: The Searcher Priscilla Presley and awardwinning Bruce Springsteen documentarian Thom Zimny teamed up to create this deeply moving, two-film, three-hour presentation that explores Elvis’ life through his intense and lifelong relationship with music. The Searcher also features rare footage and photos; interviews with Priscilla, Scotty Moore, Red West, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and others; plus, a musical score composed by Pearl Jam lead guitarist Mike McCready. Trading Spaces Your Favorite On-The-Fly Designers Are Back — With Paige, Ty And Twice The Budget! By Lori Acken Before there was Pinterest or Instagram or HGTVobsession, a renegade reality show turned the design world on its ear by turning home renovation over to the masses. In 2000, TLC debuted Trading Spaces, a paint-spattered fun fest that featured two sets of tightknit neighbors redoing a room in each other’s houses with two days, a roster of charismatic pro Paige Davis designers and carpenters, and a thousandbuck budget to help make the magic happen. Just like that, found-object shelving and miles of fabric draped, you know, wherever became coveted, copied home decor. This month, Trading Spaces returns to TLC, reuniting much of the original cast plus special guests John Gidding, Kahi Lee, Sabrina Soto and carpenters Brett Tutor and Joanie Sprague to woo a design-savvy new generation. “I’m always surprised at how much how-to information we gave,” grins the show’s sunny host Paige Davis, who returns to helm the reboot. “I used to always say we were the home improvement show that had nothing to do with home improvement, because we goofed off so much.” Premieres on TLC April 7

8

Let’s reacquaint you with the cast. LAURIE SMITH —

THE SOUTHERN CHARMER Georgia born with titian curls and a soothing drawl, Smith crafted designs that reflected her own ladylike style. But her fierce loathing of ceiling fans and penchant for makeovers that bit off more than poor carpenter Ty Pennington could chew kept viewers entertained. “I was always in awe of the people in airports,” says Smith, also an author and product designer. “Half of them were, for the first time ever, men, husbands coming up and going, ‘Hey, I watch your show!’ It was thrilling!”

April HILDI SANTO-TOMAS — THE REBEL

Furniture on the ceiling. Sand on the floor. A mural of her face as living room decor. When the Southernborn, super-chic Santo-Tomas — who now spends her time exploring the world — appeared, homeowners shook in their shoes. And viewers quivered in anticipation of a fireworks reveal. “Trading Spaces for me has always been about pushing people’s imagination and helping the viewers and the homeowners think out of the box,” says Santo-Tomas.

VERN YIP —

All images: Credit: TLC

THE SURE BET Who didn’t love a Vern Yip room? Calm as a puddle, and a veritable alchemist with his limited cash and his homeowner’s desires, the unerringly tasteful, silk-loving Yip turned wishes into elegant dream rooms. “Trading Spaces was a touchstone for people because it made design accessible,” he says. “During the original run, everybody wanted a Tuscan kitchen. Now people are like, ‘I don’t really want it to look like a specific trend. I want it to look like me.’ That’s the interesting challenge all of us have to meet now.”

GENEVIEVE GORDER —

FRANK BIELEC —

DOUG WILSON —

TY PENNINGTON —

THE FREE SPIRIT The show’s resident beachy blonde famously kicked off her shoes to get down to work, creating comfy, hippie-chic rooms with a dash of covetable edge. Boasting her own homedesign brand, Gorder also proudly carves out time for human rights causes. “Kids are what made us big,” Gorder told AOL in November. “We were on after school, [kids] told their parents, and then we became primetime.”

“MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY” The show’s resident sex symbol if you preferred your men more polished than Pennington, Wilson liked things sleek, modern and on-trend, even if his homeowners didn’t. “What we’ve always prided ourselves in is having the homeowners being hands-on and having projects and buying materials to make things and rethinking an item so that it does become unique,” Wilson says of today’s Amazon-anddone world. “If you just want to open up boxes and place things in your home, that’s a whole different show.”

THE FAMILY-FRIENDLIEST If you preferred your abode homespun and cozy, you were dang happy to see Bielec at your reveal. With a penchant for chickens, Southwestern hues and artsy-craftsy touches, the semi-retired Bielec was Spaces’ Zen teddy bear. “When we first started the show, we were dumpster divers,” Bielec muses. “We almost got arrested taking down people’s fences and stuff like that. Now, the $2,000 will at least get us a good lawyer if we need one.”

THE COMIC CUTIE BUILDER His permatan, bedhead and soul patch made female fans swoon, but Pennington’s unfettered sense of humor and willingness to kill a night (and nearly himself) making floors and furniture out of thin air endeared him to folks on both sides of the camera. “My first couple episodes, I remember having to have a conversation with Doug: ‘Doug, I work with you, not for you. You understand that, right?’” Pennington recalls. “So anyway, he still doesn’t understand.”

OnePass: Your Ticket To

Limitless Entertainment

OnePass gathers every episode of a series available anywhere and adds them right to your My Shows list to watch instantly. If an episode isn’t available on TV or from Midco ON Demand, OnePass fills in the gaps with episodes from streaming video providers like Netflix, Hulu and more. Forget about knowing when a show will be airing or wondering which streaming video service has it available: The TiVo service does it for you, so you can start watching right away! And here’s even better news: streaming videos don’t take up any disk space! So when your OnePass includes streaming videos, you get more choices without having to worry about saving space for other recordings. TO CREATE A ONEPASS, find a series you want to watch, then choose “Create a OnePass.” A OnePass folder for the series will be instantly created in My Shows and all available episodes will be added.

TiVo Tip!

Got a question? For general troubleshooting, go to the TiVo Central screen, and select “Settings & Messages,” then “Help,” then “Troubleshooting.”

NOTE: OnePass searches work best when your video provider list is up to date, with as many providers as possible selected. To view your list of video providers, from the TiVo Central screen select “Settings & Messages,” then “User Preferences,” then “Add & Manage Video Apps.”
