A Must-See World War II Miniseries

Hype TV NEWS Hype Hype LET’S GO CRAZY: THE GRAMMY SALUTE TO Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to celebrate this thing called Prince’s life — with a spectacular salute to the legendary 38-time Grammy nominee and seven-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, musician, actor and producer. From his towering achievement with 1984’s Purple Rain to his unprecedented influence on music, Let’s Go Crazy: The Grammy Salute to Prince (CBS, Tuesday, April 21) will be a memorable evening. “One of the true joys of producing the Grammy Awards is both working with and being able to tribute your heroes, and Prince gave me the opportunity of doing both,” says producer Ken Ehrlich. “His Grammy appearances, though few, were historic, and it’s with mixed feelings that we approach this opportunity to celebrate the amazing legacy he left us.” The show includes a remarkable collection of artists across genres and generations, including Prince protégée Sheila E., Alicia Keys, Morris Day and the Time, Beck, Foo Fighters, John Legend, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Mavis Staples, St. Vincent, Common, the Revolution, and Earth, Wind & Fire.

As Earth Day reaches its 50th anniversary on April 22 this year, some TV networks will be celebrating with programming about Earth and its inhabitants, and the importance of preserving them. Here are some highlights.

CLIMATE CHANGE — THE FACTS

April 22 on PBS Iconic natural historian Sir David Attenborough hosts this hourlong special that examines the startling impact of climate change and poses potential solutions.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNELS EARTH DAY 50TH ANNIVERSARY PROGRAMMING

April 22 National Geographic’s family of networks — National Geographic Channel (NGC), Nat Geo Wild and Nat Geo Mundo — are airing separate lineups of special programming all day long on Earth Day. Much of it is previously aired programs that are worth revisiting, but the primetime schedule features two standout premieres:

BORN WILD: EARTH DAY LIVE

(simulcast on NGC & Nat Geo Wild) Produced with ABC News and hosted by Robin Roberts, this hourlong live global telecast (interspersed with prerecorded, “cinematically sweeping” segments) follows correspondents around the world as they witness and celebrate the diversity of baby animals and their families, and the challenges facing their habitats.

JANE GOODALL: THE HOPE

(simulcast on NGC, Nat Geo Wild & Nat Geo Mundo) Picking up where Nat Geo’s award-winning 2017 documentary Jane Goodall Jane left off, this two-hour special highlights pioneering primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall’s four-decade legacy of advocacy and leadership on behalf of chimpanzees and humanity.

EARTH DAY 50TH ANNIVERSARY FILM MARATHON

April 22 on TCM Turner Classic Movies might seem like a surprising place to find Earth Day content. But it makes sense if you think back to the many films from the past century of moviemaking that show how concern for the natural world is not a new concept. As an example of that, TCM’s primetime lineup of environmental-themed films airing on Earth Day includes two stunning documentary shorts made over 80 years ago — The Plow That Broke the Plains (1936) and The River (1938). Plow is a contemporary account of how certain farming practices exacerbated the Dust Bowl. The River similarly shows how human activity led to catastrophic Mississippi River flooding. Also in TCM’s lineup is the Oscar-winning 1953 documentary The Sea Around Us, based on famed marine biologist Rachel Carson’s book; the beautiful 1982 experimental film Koyaanisqatsi, whose title is a Hopi word meaning “life out of balance” and which stunningly contrasts the serenity of nature with humanity’s frantic pace; and the Oscar-winning 2006 climatechange documentary An Inconvenient Truth.

Modern Family Say Farewell To The Family That Changed TV Families Forever.

The misadventures of the Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker clan come to a close after 11 seasons, with an hourlong series finale (ABC, Wednesday, April 8) sure to tug at the heartstrings. The groundbreaking sitcom, winner of five consecutive Primetime Emmys for Outstanding Comedy Series (2010-14), broke down stereotypes and made inroads for inclusiveness with its humorous and honest portrayal of 21st-century family dynamics. Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who plays the Mitch half of the fan favorite Mitch & Cam couple, thought the show’s seamless integration of the pair in the family from the start was key to winning over Middle America. “[Mitch and Cam] were at this moment in time when they’re bringing home a child and becoming new parents for the first time — it’s something that’s incredibly relatable 6

to so many people, gay and straight and nonbinary,” Ferguson says. “I think it was revolutionary back then, and I don’t think it’s as revolutionary now, which I think is a great thing.” As hard as it is for fans to say goodbye, it’s going to be an emotional farewell for the close-knit cast that’s bringing an end to a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Sofía Vergara found her breakout role in Gloria Delgado-Pritchett, and it turned her into a household name and one of TV’s most bankable stars. “I don’t think I [am ever] in my lifetime going to be able to get a group of people like this, to be in a show like this with this success,” she says. “So it’s a very high standard now. I don’t think anything is going to be as good or better than Modern Family.”
