ICONIC AMERICA

Learn The Surprising History Behind Famous Places. By

You may think you know the history behind many iconic symbols in America.

You will be surprised to find out you don’t.

David Rubenstein — author, philanthropist, producer and host of the eight-part documentary series Iconic America: Our Symbols and Stories With David Rubenstein (Wednesdays beginning April 26 on PBS) — has long challenged us to tackle our history and to become informed citizens. This series builds on that, taking a close examination of iconic national symbols: places from the Hollywood Sign, Fenway Park and American cowboys to the Gadsden flag (the “Don’t Tread on Me” flag), the American bald eagle, the Statue of Liberty, Stone Mountain and the Golden Gate Bridge.

“I’ve long been struck by the strength of American symbols while saddened by how little we know about them,” says Rubenstein. “Our goal with this series was to explore the history and meaning of these iconic symbols and to better understand the bigger issues and societal currents they reveal.”

For example, you may think that the Hollywood Sign was built to honor Hollywood — it wasn’t. The original sign read Hollywoodland. It was designed to sell homes but instead became a beacon for fame, fortune and the American dream.

Another surprise was learning the background of the Statue of Liberty. We think that France gave the Statue of Liberty to the United States to welcome our arriving immigrants. Nope. The Statue of Liberty was designed to be a symbol of Franco-American friendship, to thank the Americans for getting rid of slavery. Each of these eight stories will open our eyes to our history.

Carol Burnett: 90 Years Of Laughter + Love

Wednesday, April 26 on NBC By

Funny is funny, and comedy icon Carol Burnett knows that like no other. She’s been making people laugh since she took the stage in 1959 on The Garry Moore Show, who she credits for being her best mentor. Now the cherished, eartugging phenomenon humbly takes a seat in the audience (and also takes the stage), this time at the Avalon Hollywood in Los Angeles, where stars pay tribute to her work and celebrate her 90th birthday in NBC’s two-hour special Carol Burnett: 90

a guest list like no other that includes Vicki Lawrence, Julie Andrews, Bob Mackie, Lily Tomlin, Susan Lucci, Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Cher, Ellen DeGeneres, Kristen Wiig, Sofia Vergara, Steve Carell and so many others. Some of the musical tributes include “Old Friends” dedicated to Carol’s 60-year friendship with Julie Andrews, highlights from Annie and “I’m So Glad We Had This Time Together.”

Just a week after filming the special, Carol talked to us about turning 90 (“It’s hard to wrap my head around it, but considering the alternative, I am feeling great”), some of the more tear-jerker moments in the special (a grown-up Aileen Quinn singing “Tomorrow” from Annie) and what’s next for the legend.

The show took a pass on cake and candles and delivered an unbelievable variety show. Carol shares what moved her: The whole evening moved me. It wasn’t a birthday party. There were no balloons and cakes and confetti or any of that. I didn’t want it. It was a

roast. It was a variety show with live entertainment. We had a 19-piece orchestra. We had entertainment from Bernadette Peters, Kristin Chenoweth, Billy Porter, Jane Lynch, Katy Perry, Darren Criss, Sutton Foster. I mean, unbelievable.

Gobsmacked by friends and performances.

There were friends there who got up and spoke. Bob Odenkirk and Rhea Seehorn and Vince Gilligan, all the Better Call Saul folks were there. And my chum Julie Andrews flew out and she sat with me for the whole evening. And Steve Carell came out and opened the show. It was a show, a variety show. And it was very, very funny and entertaining and a little teary-eyed, too, especially when they did a tribute to the movie Annie and then Aileen Quinn was there, who was the original little Annie. She belted out “Tomorrow” and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. It was so sweet. So I was pretty gobsmacked by the whole thing, and it’ll live with me forever.

Making new friends and reuniting with old.

[I looked forward to seeing] all of them! Especially my chum Julie Andrews. And Bernadette Peters

— she was the first person we ever asked to be on The Carol Burnett Show. … And then to make a new friend with Billy Porter. Oh my God, he blew it out [of the water]. He was so good. He did “Easy Street” from Annie. There was just so many. And Marisa Tomei comes out dressed as Mrs. Wiggins in the Bob Mackie segment. Bob and Vicki were there, of course. We pay homage to Harvey Korman and Tim Conway and Lyle Waggoner; and Vicki and Bob.

Celebrating her 90th on April 26th.

We’re going to go out to dinner with some friends and then come back and watch the show, because some of them weren’t in the audience when we did it. It’ll be kind of toned down, certainly nothing like what we did last week.

Making so many people happy over the years, but also finding happiness for herself.

What makes me happy? Just being alive and being healthy and still having so many friends. I get fan mail and I answer everything when I get it. And I’m getting fan mail from 10-year-olds and teenagers and young adults. That makes me happy, too. That our show, after all these

years, still makes people laugh and that they’re watching it on YouTube, Shout and MeTV and box sets and all of that. There’s a saying that I like: “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but they’ll never forget how you made them feel.”

Singing in the shower — and with Katy Perry?

Well, I sing in the shower. Yeah. And on the show I do sing the last few bars of “I’m So Glad We Had This Time Together.” Katy Perry does the whole song at the end of the evening, and then she sits next to me and just hands me the mic and I just do the last “Comes the time we have to say so long.” And I have to say I choked up a bit.

What’s next, and how will we celebrate Carol’s 100th? Oh, I doubt that that’ll happen, but no, just to keep on working as long as I have all my parts. I still have my hips and my knees. So far I’m OK. And I do my crossword puzzles and I just finished doing a series for Apple TV+ called Palm Royale with Kristin Wiig, Allison Janney, Laura Dern and Ricky Martin. And they’re talking about a second season. And if they ask, I would certainly do that. But just keep working. I’m Energizer Bunny. I want to be like Rita Moreno. She’s a spitfire. And she’s a year older than I am.

A CENTURY OF WARNER BROS.

Monthlong TCM Event Celebrates The Legendary Studio’s 100th Anniversary.

On April 4, 1923, brothers Harry, Albert, Sam and Jack Warner founded Warner Bros., one of Hollywood’s most iconic studios. Among the cool events taking place for this anniversary is a concert series called Candlelight: 100 Years of Warner Bros. Touring various venues across the world beginning this month and running through December, Candlelight features music from some of Warner Bros.’ most iconic movie and TV productions. Details on this and more can be found at wb100.com.

On television, Turner Classic Movies (which, like Warner Bros. Pictures itself, recently came under the umbrella of the newly formed Warner Bros. Discovery) is celebrating the studio’s centennial, and tracing its history, all April long. Every title on TCM’s schedule is a WB production, from a range spanning the silent/ early talkie era to the ’80s. Additionally, there will be

several documentaries and special nights devoted to movies from legendary Warner Bros. stars like Humphrey Bogart (April 19) and Bette Davis (April 11).

It’s an impressive mix of titles and themes running across the month. Just a few notable highlights are The Brothers Warner (2007), a documentary made by Cass Warner, Harry’s granddaughter, that tells the inside story of the studio’s creation (April 1); Casablanca (1942), perhaps Warner’s most iconic production from Hollywood’s golden age (April 8); and new restorations of Howard Hawks’ 1959 Western Rio Bravo (which leads a Hawks double feature, followed by 1946’s The Big Sleep, on April 17) and Elia Kazan’s drama East of Eden (1955), starring James Dean, which kicks off an evening devoted to the actor on April 26 that also includes Rebel Without a Cause (1955) and Giant (1956).

SINGLE DRUNK FEMALE

Wednesdays beginning April 12 on FREEFORM SEASON PREMIERE!

This lighthearted, original comedy about 20-something writer and recovering alcoholic Sam (Sofia Black-D’Elia), who is forced to sober up and move in with her overbearing mother, Carol (Ally Sheedy), returns for its second season, with Sam celebrating her 29th birthday and a year and a half of sobriety, as well as a new job. Challenges still arise, however, and Sam must learn to navigate them with all the natural discomfort they bring and none of the booze. “It’s a comedy still, but I think it does a really smart job of looking at how other people in a family are involved in the alcoholic’s alcoholism and how living with an alcoholic that closely changes those relationships in

4

extremely toxic ways. So, Carol has a big reckoning this season about her own behavior,” Sheedy told us, about where the show was heading. “There is a whole world of things that have not been dealt with between Samantha and Carol that really do have to be addressed, and that stuff starts coming up in Season 2.”

The new season will also reunite Sheedy with her Breakfast Club costar Molly Ringwald, who will guest-star as her sister-in-law, Alice. “Carol’s had a long relationship with this character. She comes in, and there’s a flashback to the shiva when [her husband] died. I loved that. First of all, I love working with Molly. She’s one of my favorite people in the world. But I love that scene because the history between these two women was so easy for us to play.” — Zhanna

SECRETS OF THE ELEPHANTS

Friday, April 21 & Saturday, April 22 on NAT GEO NEW SERIES!

Last Earth Day, Nat Geo and filmmaker James Cameron debuted the first series in their outstanding Secrets of natural history programming franchise, Secrets of the Whales. The franchise continues this Earth Day weekend with the next installment, the equally impressive Secrets of the Elephants.

Describing the Secrets of films at a recent press conference, Cameron related this real-life programming to his fictional Avatar blockbusters.

“On the Avatar films,” Cameron said, “we’re creating a fantasy view of nature, but, thematically, underneath all that is this idea of the interconnectedness not only of nature itself but of us with nature, as inhabitants of nature. In the Secrets series we try to forge an even more intimate and emotional connection with nature — to illuminate how these amazing

creatures think, how they feel, how they communicate, how they function as complex societies and cultures.”

In Secrets of the Elephants, all of that is on incredible display over four episodes (two airing each night) that follow these pachyderms — often a herd of families — as they work to survive in savannahs, a forest and even a desert in Africa, and urban Asian landscapes. Narrated by Natalie Portman, the series features breathtaking cinematography as it grips viewers and brings them into the elephants’ world. It will likely teach you things (we did not know that a rare group of elephants somehow manages to live in Africa’s inhospitable Namib Desert, for example, and they have learned to “surf” down sandy cliffs to get to the infrequent waterhole) and shows some previously unfilmed behavior, such as a mother elephant “showering”

with the afterbirth following her delivery of a daughter.

There is also compelling drama that makes a viewer invested in these creatures’ constant drive for survival, as various emotional and suspenseful moments play out in scenes like: a matriarch ultimately communicating her decision to lead the herd, including a few calves, down a treacherous mountain path toward a lifesustaining waterhole; or when cameras follow a newborn calf among the desert-dwelling elephants to see if she will become the first in eight years to survive her first six months of life in that harsh terrain, with the other females in the small herd also pitching in to protect the youngster.

Secrets of the Elephants continues a great Earth Day tradition, one that will continue for years to come. Earth Day 2024 will see Secrets of the Octopus, and subsequent installments that will focus on bees and penguins have also been ordered. — Jeff Pfeiffer

CHASING THE RAINS

Saturdays beginning April 22 on BBC AMERICA

NEW SERIES!

Water is life. In northern Kenya, where rainfall is scarce, life takes full advantage of every drop of moisture.

Bridgerton’s Adjoa Andoh narrates this four-part series taking viewers on a journey to one of Africa’s rarely filmed regions north of Mount Kenya, where plants and wildlife endure long periods of drought broken by dramatic rainfalls that reinvigorate the ecosystem.

Chasing the Rains begins at a time when river valleys flow with water and the land is lush with new life, bringing elephants, wildebeest, zebras, gazelles and other herbivores to eat, drink and bathe. Carnivores like lions, cheetahs, spotted hyenas and African wild dogs have prey aplenty. But the feast is short-lived, as the sun bakes the parched earth and the animals must once again fight for survival in the harsh, dry climate. The series also looks at how climate change has prolonged these periods of drought, making an already challenging struggle all the more difficult.

CHANGING PLANET

Wednesdays beginning April 19 on PBS SEASON PREMIERE!

Conservation International CEO Dr. M. Sanjayan continues his seven-year Earth Day project to document the effects of climate change and measures being taken to safeguard against it at six of our planet’s most vulnerable biomes. Sanjayan hosts Season 2 from Australia, a land on the front lines in the fight against global warming. From there, he checks in with scientists and local experts in Cambodia, Kenya, Iceland, Brazil, California and Maldives to chart the progress of their efforts to protect their communities and wildlife.

PRIDE: A SEVEN DEADLY SINS STORY

Saturday, April 8 on LIFETIME ORIGINAL FILM!

When Stephanie Mills was just 11 years old, she walked onto the stage for amateur night at Harlem’s legendary Apollo Theater and never looked back — she won amateur night for six straight weeks and then hit the road with the Isley Brothers. That was the start of what would become an amazing, fivedecade-long career. When we caught up with the Grammy-winning Mills, who’s beloved for iconic hits like “Never Knew Love Like This Before” and “Home,” she was literally heading “home” to Charlotte after performing in Los Angeles. Mills, who just turned 66, was happy to carve out time to talk about her latest project, Lifetime’s Pride: A Seven Deadly Sins Story

(it’s the fifth movie in the network’s successful Seven Deadly Sins anthology film franchise).

“I haven’t acted in a long time,” Mills shares. “I loved playing Birdie. She’s strong, she loves her family, but she has a lot of pride that complicated a lot of relationships with her family. Ultimately love wins out, and that was wonderful.”

Inspired by a true story, Pride tells the tale of reality TV star Birdie Moore, whose carefully constructed world starts to crumble when her family secrets are brought to light. To salvage her legacy, Birdie must let go of the pride that distanced her from her son (Thomas Miles) and learn to reconnect in ways she wasn’t previously capable.

“The film hit home for me,” Mills says. “I’ve had people in my family who have passed away from cancer, so I can relate to that. Family is everything to me; it was everything to my mom and my dad, too. My mother never let anything get in between her children. For my mother, her children were everything, so I couldn’t relate to Birdie in that sense, but I knew the essence of her. I knew she was a strong Black woman who wanted the best for her children.”

The film also includes a touching segment that allows two Grammy-winning actresses — Erica Campbell also stars as a pastor in the film — to exercise their vocal range. “I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised,” Mills shares. “We sing together just a little bit, but it’s very nice. It’s in a scene when I’m in the hospital and I’m being tested for my cancer. And [Campbell] comes in as my pastor and I ask her to sing one of my favorite hymns.”

As for what makes Mills prideful and happy these days? “What makes me happy and makes me prideful is the fact that audiences still come out to see me. We just played [in Los Angeles], me and El DeBarge, and we sold out. And for me not to have any new music out, and for people to still come and pay their hard-earned money to see me is just amazing. ... For me to still be in the game at this age and still doing well is a blessing, and that I’m proud of.”

She assures us, “I’m living my best life.”

HULLRAISERS

Wednesdays beginning April 5 on IFC NEW SERIES!

This British sitcom, adapted from an Israeli series, is set in the English city of Hull and follows three middleaged women dealing with the unglamorous realities of working-class adulthood. Toni (Leah Brotherhead) is a wife, mother and self-described actress who does very little acting outside of the house. Her older sister, Paula

(Sinead Matthews), has to deal with a teenage daughter (Natalie Davies) who’s taking pole dancing lessons. Rana (Taj Atwal), Toni’s best friend and Paula’s sister-in-law, is a policewoman who has neither a husband nor kids getting in the way of her good times. Actress/comedian/writer Lucy Beaumont adapted the series as a love letter to her Hull hometown and a comic exploration of her parenting struggles. In one episode, Toni has a near-meltdown after her daughter decides she’s terrified of flamingos a halfhour before her flamingo-themed birthday party begins.

WACO: THE AFTERMATH

Sundays beginning April 16 on SHOWTIME NEW LIMITED SERIES!

Coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the tragic events that began on Feb. 28, 1993, between the ATF and a small religious community in Waco, Texas, Showtime’s five-episode limited series tells the aftermath of the Branch Davidian disaster — the trials of the surviving members and the rise of a homegrown terrorist. Michael Shannon (George & Tammy) will reprise his role from the 2018 Waco series as Gary Noesner, an FBI hostage negotiator who now suffers from PTSD from the failed negotiations. John Leguizamo also returns as Jacob Vasquez, an ATF agent who worked undercover during the lead-up to Waco. Giovanni Ribisi also stars as a top trial lawyer for the surviving Branch Davidians. 11 RACE TO SURVIVE ALASKA

Mondays beginning April 3 on USA NETWORK NEW SERIES!

Fans of Survivor, The Amazing Race and survival shows like Alone often do a self-litmus test of sorts questioning if they would be up for the challenge or would have a shot at winning. No chance on this one for a lot of us, as this is the most grueling, punishing, desperate fight for survival ever explored on television.

USA Network’s Race to Survive Alaska follows eight teams as they race across more than 100 miles

of inhospitable terrain for a shot at winning $500,000. The competition is over six weeks and includes six legs, where adventure racers and survival experts not only race but also need to source their own food and water while trying to navigate previously unexplored Alaskan terrain. In each leg of the race, the last team to reach the finish line is eliminated.

“The thing that sort of sparked the idea for me and my team was about how do we make it urgent? How do we get it moving? And we’re like, let’s make it a race,” tells Brian Lovett, executive producer and one of the race’s creators. “It’s two races in one. You have this incredible adventure race, through

really challenging terrain. But then when you get through the race part … now they need to live off the land for three, four days [before they start the next leg].”

Quickly you can see that while some may have an advantage being the fastest racers, you’re going to be in trouble if you don’t know how to make a fire, forage for food, build a shelter, navigate using a compass, and deal with injuries and all the other unpredictability that comes with being in the wild.

“Some lost 10, 20 pounds,” Lovett adds. “I mean, they lost a lot of weight and it was brutal. It really was tough. We had some really interesting outcomes for some of the teams.” — Barb

DEAR MAMA

Fridays beginning April 21 on FX NEW SERIES!

A 1988 interview with then 17-year-old Tamalpais High School senior Tupac Shakur reveals a young man with exceptional charisma and eloquence. He has wisdom beyond his years, and the courage to speak truth to power. “We’re not being taught to deal with the world as it is,” he says. “We’re being taught to deal with this fairyland, which we’re not even living in anymore. That’s why my mother taught me to analyze society and not be quiet. If there’s something in my mind, speak it.”

Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur, was a political activist and member of the Black Panther Party. She and 20 other members were arrested in New York City in 1969 on trumped-up charges of conspiracy to bomb police stations and other public buildings. After her acquittal in 1971, Afeni’s life as a single mother was difficult, and she struggled with drug addiction through the 1980s. In 1996, she mourned Tupac’s murder in a drive-by shooting, a crime that remains unsolved.

FX’s five-part documentary series Dear Mama is a deep dive into Tupac and Afeni’s relationship, and how Afeni’s revolutionary mind influenced her son as an artist, poet, rapper, actor, activist and icon. In addition to interviews with Afeni before her death in 2016, the series also includes interviews with Mike Tyson, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Eminem, and recollections from Afeni and Tupac’s close friends and family.

There are also moments when Dear Mama director Allen Hughes has to turn the camera on himself. Hughes and his brother, Albert, directed two of Tupac’s music videos in the early 1990s. Tupac and members of his crew assaulted the Hughes brothers after they fired him from the film Menace II Society. Tupac served 15 days in jail for the offense.

“That’s pretty surreal to do a narrative that you were a part of, and then to have it be so personal,” Allen Hughes says. “I didn’t want to do it at first. And then I realized, @#$%, I never processed the trauma, but we have to take ownership of all of our collective journey. This is part of us. So how do we decant this?”

How To Get The Most Out Of Your TiVo

Your TiVo DVR does more than just record live TV. It can also recommend new shows for you based on what you already watch, or even remotely schedule recordings with the TiVo app. This little box has a lot to explore!

Here’s a handy tip for getting the most out of your TiVo system: Use the voice control!

Just press the blue microphone on the TiVo voice remote and speak as you normally would, telling your TiVo DVR to change the channel, pause/rewind/fast forward a show, launch an app or search for a movie.

Important Notes

· Currently, voice functionality is only available with the newer TiVo Experience. If you have the classic TiVo Experience, the voice remote will still work on your DVR, but without voice control.

· Older TiVo remotes will work with the newer TiVo Experience, but you won’t have voice control functionality. If your current remote does not have a Back button, use the Zoom button to go back on any screen.

· You can upgrade your remote for a one-time charge. Contact Midco (Midco.com/Contact) to get the new remote.
