FOR A WILD FALL The New TV Season Promises Massive Upheaval, And It Hasn’t Even Started Yet. By Jeff Pfeiffer
2
The Expanse (moving from Syfy to Amazon) — The popular space opera was canceled in mid May when Syfy opted to let it go after three seasons. By the end of that month, though, Amazon announced that it will revive the show for a fourth season, with an airdate to be determined. Lucifer (moving from FOX to Netflix) — In the case of FOX’s drama Lucifer, Netflix confirmed that it is bringing back the Tom Ellis-led series for a fourth season, with a premiere date yet to be determined.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine (moving from FOX to NBC) — In mid May, during the same week that FOX canceled Brooklyn Nine-Nine after five seasons, NBC swooped in to the rescue after fans took to social media with #save99 and #renew99 social media hashtags. The comedy looks like it will debut Season 6 on its new network in midseason.
Last Man Standing (moving from ABC to FOX) — FOX also made news by announcing that it will be bringing back Tim Allen’s sitcom Last Man Standing. ABC canceled the series last year after six seasons, and fans have been upset ever since. Season 7 will now air Fridays on FOX starting this fall.
In late May, ABC pulled the plug on its spring hit Roseanne, the revival of Roseanne Barr’s iconic ’80s and ’90s sitcom. After Barr tweeted an offensive comment, ABC opted to cancel the series. Almost immediately there were murmurs that the network was seeking to bring back the series in some form with all of the cast except its polarizing star. In late June that was proved to be the case when ABC announced it will be debuting a 10-episode spinoff series Tuesdays this fall with the working title of The Conners. John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson and Michael Fishman will all be reprising their respective roles as Dan, Jackie, Darlene, Becky and D.J. Can the Conner clan survive without their matriarch, both in the world of the series and in the real world of ratings?

Canceled Then Uncanceled Shows Moving To New Networks This year has seen fan bases of TV shows exerting their viewing power and collective voices to influence networks as never before. Social media outcries and petitions have led to four major series that had been canceled being picked up to resume production on new networks or streaming services — sometimes within just days.

Recently Renewed Shows
It’s a bird, it’s a plane — it’s a renewal for Krypton! Syfy ordered a second season of its Superman prequel series just ahead of the Season 1 finale in May. … Another DC Comics-inspired series, Gotham, has been renewed by FOX for a fifth and final season, which costar Camren Bicondova has hinted might feature only 10 episodes. … In more superhero news, FX’s Legion, based on Marvel’s X-Men franchise, has been renewed for Season 3. … FOX isn’t getting too old for this Lethal Weapon stuff — the series will return for a third season, with Seann William Scott joining Damon Wayans as a new lead character following Clayne Crawford’s firing. … Although Syfy canceled it after three seasons, The Expanse has been picked up by Amazon for Season 4. … Jason Jones and Samantha Bee are taking The Detour again — the couple’s TBS comedy will return for Season 4. … Trading Spaces, TLC’s revival of its beloved home makeover series, will return for Season 2 with an expanded number of episodes in early 2019 (it will be the series’ 10th season overall).

Summer Under the Stars Frank Sinatra Kicks Off The Monthlong Event, And Barbra Streisand Finally Gets Her Day. By Stephen Whitty
nterested in gazing at some heavenly bodies? Turner Classic Movies is happy to oblige. August brings TCM’s annual Summer Under the Stars event, where every day is dedicated to a different Hollywood legend. It’s like 31 mini movie festivals — and you don’t even have to leave your couch. Each 24-hour block starts at dawn, and the whole binge begins on Aug. 1, with a Frank Sinatra salute. Among the must-sees? His Oscar-winning role in From Here to Eternity (1953), his harrowing work in The Man With the Golden Arm (1955) and the grim war drama None but the Brave (1965), Ol’ Blue Eyes’ only film directing credit. We could all use some laughter these days, and Walter Matthau was always happy to provide, as his day on Aug. 9 reminds us. But 4
go beyond The Odd Couple (1968) and rediscover some of his rare dramatic work, too, in the still-topical Cold War chiller Fail-Safe (1964) and the original The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974). Few stars’ careers can rival that of Gary Cooper, a leading man from the silent era right up until his death in 1961. Tune in Aug. 11, and you’ll get some idea why, too — his straight-up decency in The Pride of the Yankees (1942), his bashful charm in Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) and his long, lean dreaminess in the feverish The Fountainhead (1949). Some stars, thankfully, are still with us, like Doris Day, who recently turned 96. She’s best remembered for Pillow Talk (1959) and other sunny comedies — and the Aug. 12 lineup features plenty — but catch her more serious side in The Winning Team (1952) as
the wife of Ronald Reagan’s ailing ballplayer, or in the creepy thriller Midnight Lace (1960). Still going strong is Barbra Streisand, getting her first Summer Under the Stars salute on Aug. 17. She’s proudest of her passion project Yentl (1983), but What’s Up, Doc? (1972) is a modern screwball delight. And why not prepare yourself for the upcoming Lady Gaga/ Bradley Cooper A Star Is Born by seeing Streisand and Kris Kristofferson’s 1976 take? Wrapping up the month’s festivities on Aug. 31 is, well, the star who practically defines “star” — Joan Crawford. So definitely check her out in the sob story Humoresque (1946) and the lady-in-peril flick Sudden Fear (1952). And even if you already know What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) — well, watching her onscreen with Bette Davis will remind you all over again of what happens when true stars collide.

BETTER CALL SAUL
Cast Members Weigh In On Their Characters’ Lives Post-Chuck. By Lori Acken

S
uffice it to say that much more than just Chuck and his house went up in flames when Better Call Saul sent its third season out in a literal blaze of, well, horror via the elder McGill’s suicide. So did any hope that one more season of affable Jimmy McGill might pass before he goes full-blown Saul Goodman, the shameless shyster we first met in Breaking Bad. Humiliated and jobless, Chuck (Michael McKean) spent his final words on Jimmy (Bob Odenkirk), offering a cruel assessment of his baby brother’s inability to do anything but damage, complete with the suggestion that Jimmy succumb fully to his lesser angels and capped by a merciless zinger that sealed Jimmy’s fate: “You’ve never mattered all that much to me.” Hours later, Chuck kicked over a lantern and torched himself alive. With Chuck’s words ringing in his ears, and only his beloved Kim (Rhea Seehorn) left to tether him to his better nature, Jimmy faces a stark, new, family-free reality. “We literally begin the next morning after Chuck’s burned his house down,” Odenkirk reveals of Season 4, airing on AMC Mondays beginning Aug. 6. “Jimmy feels like he was swindled. The world held up this paragon of virtue called Chuck McGill to him, and he tried to live up to this person, and in the end, that person said, ‘You never mattered anyways.’ [Jimmy’s] done with trying to live up to virtuous exemplars. He’s done with trying to please anyone.” Except maybe his longtime love Kim, whose own existential crisis was gaining traction as the tragedy occurred.
“Kim is sharing this season equally with Jimmy, if not eclipsing him a bit, because she matters in the choices he makes and how he becomes Saul,” Odenkirk says. “She’s the last person on earth that he has to live right for and to do right for. In order for him to become Saul, there has to be some circumstance that makes him think that he can do that either beside her or without her.” As for Chuck’s HHM partner Howard Hamlin (Patrick Fabian), Odenkirk says, “[Howard] cracks pretty hard in light of Chuck killing himself, so the relationship between Jimmy and Howard is very complex.” “It’s like children,” Fabian chuckles. “Something got broke, Mommy and Daddy come home, and two kids are looking at each other: Who did it? Who’s taking the fall? All of those issues are definitely visited the first time, post Chuck’s demise, that the characters meet up.” Even as Jimmy speeds ever closer to his Saul identity, Odenkirk says we’ll also learn more about another of Jimmy’s future personas in Season 4, “Gene — the character that Saul becomes after the events of Breaking Bad, the guy hiding in Cinnabon — his story starts to pick up.” As do the illicit activities of Nacho (Michael Mando), Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) and their complex crime operation, abetted by the arrival of Breaking Bad’s mysterious and unseen Lalo, whom Saul clearly knew and feared. “So much great stuff happening!” Odenkirk crows. “We’re getting closer to the Breaking Bad world. Maybe even touching it like a hot wire!” 7

After the residents of the small town bombard him with requests to investigate local cases, Harley becomes a real-life detective and enlists the help of his childhood friends, Sam (Sydney Poitier Heartsong) and Dave (Kristian Bruun). O’Connell says, “I just think that genre of non-police person helping real police person, [is] a formula that works on TV.” Premieres on WGN America Aug. 7

A social study of sorts, ABC’s latest docuseries tests the human need for companionship under extreme circumstances as 12 individuals are dropped alone throughout various islets in Indonesia and challenged to survive with just their washed-up luggage, scattered resources and abandoned structures. The only way to leave is to persevere long enough to be rescued or to quit. As dramatic situations unfold on the remote islands, the series flashes back to the real lives of each participant in documentary fashion, demonstrating haunting parallels to the lives they left behind. How much crazier can the series get in its sixth and final installment? Well, how about time travel? In the sixth film, Fin must go back in time to stop the Sharknado that started it all. NEED HELP FINDING SOMETHING TO WATCH? Let TiVo Suggestions Help!
Auto-Recording TiVo Suggestions
When your DVR has available space, it automatically records TiVo Suggestions. But you don’t ever need to worry about recorded Suggestions taking up space — here’s why: TiVo Suggestions never replace shows you record or prevent your shows from being recorded. TiVo Suggestions are always the first shows deleted to make room for your recordings. If you’d prefer not to record TiVo Suggestions automatically, you can turn them off. From the TiVo Central screen, choose Settings & Messages, then User Preferences, then TiVo Suggestions. On the TiVo Suggestions screen, choose “No, don’t record TiVo Suggestions.” You can still see the TiVo Suggestions list and choose to record individual shows.
Watching TiVo Suggestions
Recorded Suggestions appear in the TiVo Suggestions group inside the My Shows list. You can watch, save or delete them just like any other show. Here’s how to find them: TiVo Suggestions appears as a category in the left column of the My Shows list. Highlight it to see all of your recorded Suggestions. When you select a category in My Shows, you’ll find a Suggestions folder for that category. For example, in the TV Series category, you’ll find a TiVo Suggestions folder that contains only suggestions for TV series you might like to watch.
