SUPER BOWL LIV

There will be no victory parade for Tom Brady in Beantown this year

By Ryan A. Berenz

Is It On TV? Yes. FOX will broadcast the game with playby-play man Joe Buck and analyst Troy Aikman, who was the starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys when they won their most recent Super Bowl 24 years ago. How Many People Watch It? Last year’s boring Super Bowl was watched by 98.2 million people, the fewest number since 97.5 million tuned in to see David Tyree’s legendary helmet catch in Super Bowl XLII in 2008. That’s still good enough to be the 12th most watched U.S. TV broadcast in terms of average viewership. Who’s Performing At Halftime? Shakira will be shakin’ it on the field with Jennifer Lopez, who is, as of presstime, still Jenny From the Block. Shakira turns 43 on Super Bowl

What Should We Buy? Brands making their Super Bowl ad debuts include Facebook, Kellogg’s Pop-Tarts, Sabra and Porsche. WeatherTech, TurboTax, Pringles, Kia, Hyundai, Coca-Cola, Anheuser-Busch and Avocados From Mexico are among the returning advertisers. You’ll probably have watched a lot of these ads online before the game, but try to act surprised when they air on TV. FOX scored around $5.6 million for a 30-second commercial. Is There Football? Yes. Among the many hours of pregame hype and analysis on Sunday, there will be about 11 minutes of actual football game play. The AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs make their first appearance in the Super Bowl since 1970 when they take on the NFC champion San Francisco 49ers. What’s On After? Season 3 of The Masked Singer helps us move on with our lives. Former Dancing With the Stars contestants will dress up as Frog, Robot, Banana, Miss Monster, Llama, Mouse and others to sing and dance for Jenny McCarthy’s amusement.

THE 2020 OSCARS – A YEAR OF AMAZING FILMS Live from the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, stars will gather on Sunday, Feb. 9, to hear whose names are read from those precious envelopes and which film will take home the top prize of Best Picture. E!’s Countdown to the Red Carpet: Oscars 2020 begins at 12pmCT, followed by Live From the Red Carpet at 4pmCT, and then the Red Carpet Rundown at 6pmCT. ABC takes over at 5:30pmCT with its live red carpet show followed by the actual Academy Awards at 7pmCT. The night concludes with E!’s After Party: Oscars 2020 immediately following the ceremony. 2

BEST PICTURE NOMINEES FOR THE 2020 OSCARS: Ford v Ferrari, The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, Joker, Little Women, Marriage Story, 1917, Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood, Parasite

What’s LIV In Regular Numbers? 54. The NFL just celebrated its 100th season, but almost half of those seasons don’t seem to matter since they predate the Super Bowl era. Only your old Uncle Dave from Akron cares that the Cleveland Browns won four NFL championships from 1950-64.

What Have We Here? Super Bowl LIV, the NFL’s championship game for the 2019 season, is played Feb. 2 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla.

REAL-LIFE DRAMA Discovery Channel is teaming up with U.K. network Channel 4 to produce a U.S. version of a British hit. 24 Hours in Police Custody USA captures just that, 24 hours inside a police station — here, the Kansas City Police Department — that shows how detectives work to solve crimes. The show will air on Investigation Discovery.

AT THE ALPHABET NETWORK ABC has acquired Kevin Costner’s new series ISB from A+E Studios. The series will follow the elite special agents of the Investigative Services Branch, who solve crimes committed within the National Parks. Costner is executive producing and writing the series along with Aaron Helbing, but is not attached to star.

Questions

With ROBIN THICKE Of FOX’s “The Masked Singer”By Jeff Pfeiffer

FOX’s singing competition series The Masked Singer, an adaptation of a popular Korean show, has been one of TV’s most addictive hits in recent years. The show will return for its third season with a special premiere Sunday, Feb. 2, following FOX’s coverage of Super Bowl LIV before moving to its regular Wednesday time slot on Feb. 5. While the fun of the series comes from guessing which celebrity is performing underneath an elaborate costume, some of the stars on the show are not in masks at all. That includes the big-name panelists, who, with the viewers, strive to unveil the identities of the stars beneath the outfits.

One of those panelists is singing superstar Robin Thicke, who will be back in Season 3 of The Masked Singer. The “Blurred Lines” artist perhaps did a little unmasking of himself when he took a few minutes to answer our “5 Questions.”

1

Do you have a favorite sports team? Besides the L.A. teams — L.A. Lakers, Dodgers, of course — I actually grew up loving the curse of the Boston Red Sox. And so, I’ve gotten to enjoy their last 15 years of success. But [in 2018], when they played the Dodgers [in the World Series], it was a no-lose situation for me.

2

Do you have any pets? I do. I have two dogs, a Labrador retriever and an Australian shepherd.

3

What shows, networks or streaming services would you need to have on your

TV? Well, FOX, FOX and FOX [laughs]. ESPN, got to have that. Then, well, I guess FOX, HBO.

4

If your refrigerator or pantry could only be stocked with certain foods or drinks, what would they be? Oh, let me think on that. What will get me through the day, each day? Eggs, romaine lettuce and tequila.

4

5

Can you recall a particularly memorable encounter you’ve had with one of your fans? Oh, man. Really, my second album, The Evolution of Robin Thicke, spoke a lot about spirituality and getting through the toughest times in your life. And hearing people’s stories about those songs, and how they helped them through those times in their life [is great]. And also, being a part of people’s first dances at weddings or things like that. You love, as a musician or an artist, being a part of people’s happiest days or happiest moments.

The XFL is reborn “For the Love of Football”

RESURRECTED!

XFL: © 2019, ESPN Inc. Credit: Melissa Rawlins / ESPN Images.

The XFL Is Back. No, Seriously. The XFL Is Back. By Ryan A. Berenz

The XFL was a pro football league that played its only season in 2001. A joint venture between Vince McMahon’s WWF (now WWE) and NBC, the XFL was supposed to provide a higher-octane, more entertaining style of football than the NFL. (Remember Rod “He Hate Me” Smart?) But the product on the field was inferior, the TV ratings were poor and McMahon himself declared the XFL to be a “colossal failure.” Or maybe it was just way ahead of its time. Nineteen years later, McMahon is giving the XFL another try as the reincarnated brand’s first season kicks off Feb. 8. The eight-team league consists of the DC Defenders, New York Guardians, St. Louis BattleHawks and Tampa Bay Vipers in the XFL East, and the Dallas Renegades, Houston Roughnecks, Los Angeles Wildcats and Seattle Dragons in the XFL West.

Football fans will recognize many of the XFL’s players and coaches from their previous stints in the NFL, CFL and college ranks. For some players, the XFL is a chance to reboot their football careers. For others, it’s a chance to display talents that might’ve been overlooked at the pro level in the past. ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, FOX, FS1 and FS2 will combine to televise every game of the 10-week XFL regular season. Playoffs will air April 18-19 on FOX and ESPN, and the championship game will air April 26 on ESPN. That is provided the XFL can survive the spring. Recent history is not encouraging. The Alliance of American Football launched last year, struggled financially and folded before it could complete its first season. 5
