It’s never easy to say farewell to a beloved TV show, but at least these series will have their stories come full circle with planned final seasons: Blue Bloods (CBS) The police drama following the Reagan family will have its 14th and final season of 14 episodes split into two parts. The first half premieres Feb. 16, with the remainder airing in the fall. “It has been an honor and a privilege to work on a show that not only celebrates the men and women who protect and serve in New York City, but also displayed the importance of family,” says star Tom Selleck. Bob Hearts Abishola (CBS) The charming sitcom about sock manufacturer Bob (Billy Gardell) and his unlikely romance with Nigerian immigrant nurse Abishola (Folake Olowofoyeku) concludes with a fifth season of 13 episodes premiering Feb. 12. Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO) Larry David’s 2

comedy begins its 12th and final season of 10 episodes on Feb. 4. “As Curb comes to an end, I will now have the opportunity to finally shed this ‘Larry David’ persona and become the person God intended me to be — the thoughtful, kind, caring, considerate human being I was until I got derailed by portraying this malignant character,” David says, probably joking. S.W.A.T. (CBS) Hondo (Shemar Moore) and the team will be back for a 13-episode seventh and final season beginning Feb. 16. CBS canceled S.W.A.T. in May, but then reversed that decision a few days later. Young Sheldon (CBS) The Big Bang Theory prequel signs off with Season 7 beginning Feb. 15. SHŌGUN

Tuesdays beginning Feb. 27 on FX NEW SERIES!

Based on the epic 1975 novel that also inspired the Richard Chamberlain miniseries in 1980, this new series takes place in feudal Japan and follows the rise of Lord Toranaga, a powerful Japanese magnate, through the eyes of an English sailor named John Blackthorne — a character modeled after William Adams, the first English navigator to reach Japan in 1600. Many of the other characters were modeled after real historical figures important to Japanese culture as well, including Lord Toranaga, played by Hiro Sanada. “I played that role before. I played him twice. And also his opponent, Ishida Mitsunari,” said Sanada, who was also a producer on the show for the first time. “I already learned about the real history as a Japanese actor. This one is an original character. Because this is based on the novel, I tried to forget history and focus on this new version of the script.” “Initially I think we came at these characters thinking we could broaden what they did or even deepen some of the mischief,” said Rachel Kondo, a cowriter and coproducer who spearheaded this series with her husband, Justin Marks, who is also a cowriter and executive producer. “But we had to remember that we were working with figures who have been studied, figures who exist in the consciousness of a nation. We had to really understand that we need to write to the spirit of the character and not just make random inventions that would suit our purposes.” Though it is a historical series akin to The Last Kingdom, part of what makes the show so successful is that you don’t have to be a history buff to enjoy it, because its focus on character and story highlights timeless themes: forbidden love, betrayal, secret alliances, and all the aspects that unfortunately arise when power is shifted and sought after. “It is a very universal drama,” added Sanada. “Not just action, not just violence, geisha, stereotypes. Very universal, very poetic. I love it.” “He was really a master storyteller,” said Marks of Sho¯gun author James Clavell and the 1,152 pages of source material they worked from. “There

are areas in the latter half that we had to condense, simplify or just heighten for specific reasons that will become clear. But everyone came together with a shared affection for the book.” The show, which was shot in and around Vancouver, is visually impressive as well. It’s clear a lot of work was put into accuracy and presentation. “We had to bring Japan to Canada. And we really did. In terms of quantity, I feel like we brought half the population, the crew of the show,” Marks said. “In the early days, it was taking so long, because you’re trying to get 200 extras out there in full nakazori with all their costumes and the obis tied right and it’s taking so long because we’re all trying to learn our way through these costumes. So, we thought to just bring our whole wardrobe department over from Japan because they can tie an obi in five seconds flat. Then suddenly the extras are showing up on time and everything was going fast.” “Every single costume that came to the studio, I checked, I taught how to wear,” Sanada added. “A French designer creating kimonos, but he doesn’t know how to wear one!” This was only one of many challenges the crew faced; in addition to making it historically and regionally accurate, there were several language barriers to break through, both on set and onscreen. Much of the show is in Japanese, and many of the actors are from Japan. “The process of translation was very complicated, and it went through a number of people in this giant telephone game that we did to polish it to get it to what it is,” Marks added. “Even the design of the font and the positioning of the font and the timing of the words onscreen was something that we would go through very carefully. If you look at the subtitles on our show, they’re higher than most subtitles onscreen. They’re closer to the actor’s face. I hate the dive going up and down.” “We went back and forth many times,” Sanada agreed. “It was like a jigsaw puzzle. When we completed the 10 episodes, I was like, ‘Yes!’” — Zhanna Slor 5

THE FINAL CHAPTER While Rick Grimes Is Alive And On The Run, Michonne Is Searching For Him, But How Does Jadis Help Decide Their Fate? By Barb Oates

THE WALKING DEAD: THE ONES WHO LIVE Sundays beginning Feb. 25 on AMC NEW SERIES!

Fans of The Walking Dead have been waiting forev-er to find out what happened to leader Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), who was presumed dead at the end of Season 9 when he exploded a bridge to save his warrior wife Michonne (Danai Gurira) and their people. What Michonne and the rest of the survivors didn’t know was that a severely injured Rick was saved (or was it abducted?) by the former Scavengers leader Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh) and her allegiance with the Civic Republic Military (CRM). But in the series finale, four years later, we got a new glimpse of Rick, barefooted on a walker-infested beach, where a CRM helicopter 6

hovers with a man telling him to surrender as “there’s no escape for the living,” while his lover Michonne desperately tries to find him. While Jadis’ connection with the CRM was explained in World Beyond, here we caught up with McIntosh for her insights on the sixepisode new series The Ones Who Live. On returning to her character and the cast. Pollyanna McIntosh: The first day, I was really looking forward to getting back in the skin of Jadis; she’s so paced at how she deals with things and she’s constantly watchful of everything else that’s going on so that she can ensure she makes the best play. She’s

like a chess player in my head, and there’s something very comfortable for me about sitting in that character. It slows me down a little. I’m much more naturally hyperactive than Jadis, so I was kind of looking forward to just putting on the heavy boots and getting weighted. And the first day, the first work that Andy [Andrew Lincoln] and I did together was a very intense scene. It just didn’t disappoint in the playfulness, the emotion, the joy, the high fives between takes. On Jadis’ background, and her status with Rick: We’ve already found out about Jadis’ background with the Civic Republic on Walking Dead: World Beyond; she has a strong position as a warrant officer there. She takes her job very seriously and she believes that the Civic Republic and military are doing the right thing for the future of humanity. But Rick Grimes

Michonne (Danai Gurira) continues her desperate search to reunite with her husband Rick Grimes. Below, Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh) as she radios in to save Rick in Season 9 of The Walking Dead, and Jadis later working for the CRM.

has a way of looking at things a little differently, and there’s some conflict of opinion there. So I’d say she’s challenged in this show perhaps more than we’ve ever seen her be challenged before. Is Jadis friend or enemy? She has a lot of connection with her past through Rick, and it’s a past she has tried to hold inside of herself emotionally — a past that she hasn’t fully reckoned with, all the loss that she had in the flagship show with losing her people. But as you would know from seeing her in the Walking Dead: World Beyond, there’s actually a line she says towards the end of that series where she says, “I don’t have friends.” And that’s how she gets by. She doesn’t have attachments anymore because look what it did to her before. Though she believes that the world could be a place where those things are possible again, perhaps even for her in the work that she does, she has to be singular about it. ... Rick is a different kettle of fish for her. He’s a huge connection to her past and she cares about him very much. Whether she will allow any of that to be truly felt or not [we will need to wait and see]. On the ending: I’m very satisfied. There’s some extraordinary stuff in there. There’s an exploration of the male experience that I think I’ve certainly been missing in a lot of other things I’ve been watching. And there’s a lot of action, which I love — you can see and feel it and understand what’s happening and be in the moment with the characters. Prepare for some emotions: It’s not black and white. I think that’s one of the reasons that people love it so much is that the show understands the nuance of being a human. And life ain’t black and white, it’s complicated. I would say watch it with somebody you can squeeze the hand of, that you can hide in the shoulder of, and that will be there to hold you when you’re having a good cry. 7

3 Justin Hartley

TRACKER

Sundays beginning Feb. 11 on CBS NEW SERIES!

This Is Us ended its six-season run in 2022, but Justin Hartley, who played Kevin, didn’t have to look far for his next project once he read Jeffery Deaver’s The Never Game at the urging of Ken Olin, executive producer and director of both This Is Us and Tracker. The novel, about a skilled “reward seeker” named Colter Shaw who solves mysteries with his tracking skills, instantly resonated with the actor. Here, Hartley — who also serves as an executive producer on the series — reveals more.

This is different from This Is Us and your character Kevin Pearson … or is it? Justin Hartley: I carry Kevin with me a little bit into this role. This is an action thriller and Colter’s circumstances are completely different. You’ve got the father and the question about what happened there. You’ve got family drama, you’ve got questions that there are no answers to. I think if you put Kevin in Colter’s boots, he would be dead in a day. But that doesn’t mean they don’t have the same heart. In the pilot, where Colter’s hired to find a missing teenage boy, he says, “Everyone’s looking for something.” What is he looking for? He’s searching for the answer to that question. He’s a restless guy, and we’ll unpeel it throughout the season, what his childhood was. We’ll get into more detail about the relationship with his mother, his father, his brother, all that stuff. Flashbacks were a big deal in This Is Us and they’re also in Tracker’s pilot. How much are they a part of the show? The flashbacks in the pilot are necessary to tell a quick story, like, “This is where this guy is.” We’ll get away from them a little bit more as the series goes on. Premiering after the Super Bowl is a huge launch. Any pressure to deliver with the pilot? The more times people say, “Is there pressure?” the more I feel like maybe I should start feeling pressure. But it was the same thing with the This Is Us pilot. I knew it was very, very good and something I would remember for the rest of my life. That’s how I feel about this. I know our show is great, and that’s all you can do. — Jim Halterman 8

GOSPEL

Monday, Feb. 12 & Tuesday, Feb. 13 on PBS NEW SERIES!

Henry Louis Gates Jr. hosts this four-hour docuseries (two hourlong episodes air on both days) that explores what he calls “the beating heart and soul” of the African American experience: gospel music. The series explores the rich history of Black spirituality through sermon and song from its early days, when the music was influenced by blues and jazz, to the modern era, when gospel music has become mainstream and songs about faith reach millions in clubs, on cable TV and on urban radio. As he journeys through gospel’s history, Gates speaks with dozens of clergymen, singers and scholars about their connection to this music. Notable names interviewed in the series include Dionne Warwick, U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock, Rev. Otis Moss III and Professor Michael Eric Dyson.

DEAL OR NO DEAL ISLAND

Mondays beginning Feb. 26 on NBC NEW SERIES!

“The bones of Deal or No Deal are there, so fans of the original game will be happy,” promises Joe Manganiello (True Blood, Magic Mike), who hosts this juiced-up, island-centric version of the game show. Yes, the briefcases containing big bucks are back — but with Fear Factor and Big Brother on the resumés of the creative team, expect a very different spin on the 2005-09 NBC hit hosted by Howie Mandel (now an executive producer). The competition series finds 13 contestants dropped onto an undisclosed jungle island where they are left to duke it out for cases worth millions and millions of dollars that are hidden all over this island. “The lowestvalue cases put people up for elimination. The highest-

value cases Joe Manganiello give people the power to choose who faces the Banker in a game of Deal or No Deal in a temple,” Manganiello shares. At the heart of the show are the personal stories attached to the competitors that are at times uplifting and at times heartbreaking. “The social experiment is what always fascinated me about Survivor, and that is very much in play.” — Jim Halterman 9

Thursdays beginning Feb. 1 on NAT GEO SEASON PREMIERE!

Nat Geo’s award-winning anthology series Genius will focus on two iconic geniuses — Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X — and how their dueling philosophies helped usher America through the Civil Rights Movement. The eight-part series features Kelvin Harrison Jr. (The Trial of the Chicago 7) as King and Aaron Pierre (The Underground Railroad) as Malcolm. “[King’s] story has been told so many times over by actors, documentarians, etc.,” shares Harrison. “So, my question for myself was, ‘What am I contributing to his legacy that is expansive to what we have already been privileged to receive?’ The writing of the show is exciting because it was truly about a man who had a calling, and the one who has been called is not always prepared to go on that journey. There’s anxiety. There’s fear. There’s impostor syndrome. There’s that desire that we all have to just live with the person we love or our children or our families. What does it feel like to overcome personal obstacles for your calling, for your people? And if I could answer those questions for myself, then I feel like so many other people would be able to identify with him as well, and that would be more important than receiving him as only a legend. We would be receiving him as a human being who was humble and selfless enough to give himself to a cause much greater than him, and that’s what I felt I could contribute to his legacy.”

THE SPACE RACE Monday, Feb. 12 on NAT GEO

Diego Hurtado de Mendoza and Lisa Cortés directed this featurelength documentary that weaves together the stories of the Black astronauts, pilots, scientists and engineers who sought to break the bonds of social injustice and reach for the stars, serving their country in space even as their country failed to achieve equality for them back on Earth. From 1963, when the JFK assassination thwarted Capt. Ed Dwight’s quest to reach the moon, to 2020, when the echoes of the civil unrest sparked by the killing of George Floyd reached the International Space Station, this film shows how the story of African Americans at NASA is a tale of world events colliding with the aspirations of uncommon pioneers. Dwight, a former test pilot, is among those pioneers featured in the film, along with aerospace engineer Guion Bluford, former NASA administrator/retired U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Charles Bolden, astronaut/geologist Jessica Watkins and others. 10

“She’s unique and unorthodox. She’s colorful. She’s a scatterbrained genius.” Can’t wait to meet the character detailed by Emmy winner Carrie Preston? You already have! Elsbeth Tascioni, Preston’s scrappy Chicago defense attorney from The Good Wife and The Good Fight, has landed her own witty spinoff. “I feel like one of the luckiest actresses around because almost nobody gets the opportunity to play the same character on three different shows!” Preston says. When the series opens, Elsbeth has left Chicago and moved to New York City, as she has been brought in by the Justice Department on what’s called a consent decree. “In essence, she needs to babysit the NYPD and make sure they don’t do anything illegal or litigious,” Preston says. “To the cops, she’s this crazy lady who keeps sticking her nose in their business, but it turns out Elsbeth is a brilliant de facto detective and gets involved in solving cases.” The series also stars Wendell Pierce and Carra Patterson. — Ileane Rudolph

“LOVEUARY” WITH JANE AUSTEN Saturdays in February on HALLMARK CHANNEL

Hallmark Channel is back with its annual celebration of love just in time for Valentine’s Day. This year, all four original movies will be inspired by the work of Jane Austen, the beloved author of several 19th century classic novels critiquing marriage in high society. The new films include Paging Mr. Darcy (Feb. 3), An American in Austen (Feb. 17), a Hallmark Mahogany presentation of Sense and Sensibility (Feb. 24), and Love & Jane (Feb. 10), which follows a career woman (Alison Sweeney) and leader of her local Jane Austen book club who is stuck in life and love but finds guidance from her literary

hero after she suddenly appears in her living room and helps her move forward in more ways than one. “It’s a different angle,” says Sweeney of her character, Lilly, who, when her date accuses her of not being of this generation, charmingly expresses, “Well, who wants to be? TikTok is something a clock does.” “The story is really about Lilly learning who she is and working on herself and just seeing herself in a new way that allows love to come into her life, as opposed to finding the right guy,” Sweeney adds. “And we’re all learning a little lesson from Jane Austen along the way.” — Zhanna Slor

I WASN’T EXPECTING A BABY!

Sunday, Feb. 4 on HISTORY Good Morning America co-anchor Robin Roberts narrates and executive produces one of the most heroic stories you’ve never heard. This one-hour documentary shares the story of the sacrifice, bravery and contributions made by one of World War I’s best military regiments — the 15th National Guard, which would become a part of the 369th Infantry, also known as the Harlem Hellfighters. In the face of nearly impossible odds, these men achieved the extraordinary, overcoming both the grueling realities of modern war against the Germans, and racism, segregation and prejudice at home in the United States. “The story of the Harlem Hellfighters is one that showcases tremendous courage and sacrifice that has been largely overlooked,” said Roberts. “That changes now. I am thrilled to … highlight a critical piece of American history that celebrates heroes whose global and national contributions deserve to be recognized.” 12

THE HARLEM HELLFIGHTERS

To hear you’re having a baby when you had no idea is one thing, but to hear you are having a baby, like, right now — absolutely shocking. “It continues to blow my mind every single time I see a story,” tells executive producer Jesse Light. She’s talking about cryptic pregnancies, where a woman is clueless that she’s pregnant until she is basically giving birth. The stats on it are even more staggering, as one in 2,500 pregnancies are cryptic, and for some women they had a somewhat normal menstruation cycle the entire time. Lifetime shares these unbelievable stories in this fastpaced, almost edge-of-your-seat series. “When a baby comes and it’s not in the hospital, that’s always crazy to me, and we do have a lot of that,” Light adds. “Some of these women thought they had to go to the bathroom, or they had a kidney stone, or a hernia, or an appendicitis — the list goes on and on and on, but before you know it there’s a head sticking out of them and they are in the bathtub of their house giving birth.” Unique to the series is the actual format of the show that includes each woman’s social media posts (photos and videos) so viewers can clearly see how these pregnancies could go undetected. While these stories are definitely wild, creators also want to spread awareness of these symptoms to better educate women to advocate for their health. — Barb Oates

“It looked like death,” shares Alex Honnold, one of the world’s greatest climbers, on Greenland’s 3,750foot, massive Arctic sea cliff Ingmikortilaq (known as “The Separate One”). Anyone who has watched Honnold scale Yosemite’s El Capitan in the edgeof-your-seat documentary Free Solo will want to join him on this next documented climb. “Ultimately what’s at stake with climbing is your life,” Honnold admits. “You could die a lot of different ways on a wall.” As you listen to his rhythmic breaths and gear clinking, and watch his bare fingers clutching the frozen rock, your own heart is going to start racing. The three-part documentary follows Honnold, along with world-class climbers Hazel Findlay and Mikey Schaefer, as they attempt to summit Ingmikortilaq, a feat no one has attempted until now.

CRIME NATION

Tuesdays beginning Feb. 20 on THE CW NEW SERIES!

True crime comes to The CW for the first time in this new docuseries produced by former ABC News president James Goldston. With a more modern approach, which will include coverage of not only real crimes committed in the U.S. and how they are solved, but also the recent uptick in involvement of online citizen enthusiasts, the show aims to spotlight a variety of criminal cases, both solved and unsolved. “All of that attention on true crime not only reflects the kind of coverage there is of true crime, it’s actually started to affect the investigation — how these crimes are solved, how the police go about trying to find people,” Goldston shares. “You have amateur sleuths all over the

world getting involved in a way that they never did before, sometimes in ways that are good and James sometimes not very good. Goldston The aim of the show is to sort of pull back the curtain a little bit on that, and really show the good, bad, and ugly of modern true-crime reporting and investigation. Some of these stories are just incredibly psychologically fascinating, and obviously they raise profound issues of our times as well.” — Zhanna Slor 13
