N

ickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants officially premiered on July 17, 1999, and for nearly two decades, it has reigned as the No. 1 animated kids show on TV. The series, created by the late Stephen Hillenburg, has earned countless Emmy nominations (winning four), spawned two feature-length films and a Tony-winning Broadway musical, and inspired a slew of adorable merchandise. In celebration of SpongeBob turning 20, Nickelodeon is embarking on what it’s calling the “Best Year Ever,” a year of celebration of TV’s most beloved sponge that starts with an all-new special and will lead up to the summer 2020 theatrical

release of The SpongeBob Movie: It’s a Wonderful Sponge. The fun kicks off with this month’s premiere of SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout (Friday, July 12), an original special that mixes animation with live action and will feature the voice talent behind SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Sandy, Squidward and Plankton playing live-action doppelgängers of their animated characters. Rodger Bumpass, who voices SpongeBob’s cranky coworker and neighbor Squidward Tentacles, credits the success and longevity of SpongeBob SquarePants to “the silliness of the world Stephen created. Bikini Bottom, where the citizens walk around, not swim, a world of public transport, campfires, beaches, police, fast-food joints and occasional loss of water while underwater, makes for a fresh and original canvas.” He adds, “Plus, it’s just funny!” The actor reveals a few of his favorite episodes, saying, “‘Band Geeks’ is a fan favorite and mine also; it has the gag, ‘That’s his eager face,’ which I have always loved.” Bumpass also shares, “‘Goons on the Moon’ is a new one I like because I had the idea for an on-camera cameo as an animator confronted by Squidward in the real world. Plus, the 20th anniversary show where we all get to play live-action versions of our characters was such a hoot to film!”

ANNIVERSARY

THE “EAGLE” HAS LANDED Celebrating The Golden Anniversary Of The Moon Landing. By Kellie Freeze

National Geographic, July 7 Emmy and Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Tom Jennings (Challenger Disaster: Lost Tapes, Diana: In Her Own Words) presents the story of the Apollo missions without the use of narration or modern-day interviews. Instead, Jennings deftly weaves the words and images of the era — including archival TV footage, home movies, radio broadcasts, NASA film and Mission Control audio — to tell the story of the Apollo Space Program. The moving and triumphant film explains how each mission built upon the lessons of the ones before it, from the tragedy of Apollo 1 to Apollo 7’s return to manned flights, from the triumph of Apollo 11 to the near-disaster of Apollo 13, and ending with the retirement of the program with the lunar buggy ride of Apollo 17.

American Experience: Chasing the Moon PBS, July 8-10 This six-hour series, airing over three consecutive nights, is the centerpiece of PBS’ “Summer of Space” programming. Academy Award-nominated director Robert Stone offers insight into the behindthe-scenes goings-on of the space era and tells its riveting story as a blend of scientific innovation, political calculation, media spectacle and personal drama. “This was my childhood. I was 10 years old when they landed on the moon,” shares Stone, who says that this series is an introduction to the space race for a new generation. “I really wanted to capture that feeling of what it was like for all of us to live at a time when we were doing this grand, aspirational goal, and how that sort of infected our lives, our perceptions about the future.” The series digs deep into archives to find rare footage and features new interviews with people who were part of, and paid witness to, these historic events, including Poppy Northcutt, the first woman to work in Mission Control, and Sergei Khrushchev, son of former Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. 4

O

n July 20, 1969, people around the world watched their TVs in rapt attention as Apollo 11 astronauts touched down on the moon and Neil Armstrong took historic first steps on the lunar surface. This singular moment defined a generation and became the culmination of President John F. Kennedy’s 1961 challenge before Congress to land a man on the moon before the end of the decade. Kennedy also reiterated the collaborative nature of space travel, saying, “It will not be one man going to the moon — if we make this judgment affirmatively, it will be an entire nation. For all of us must work to put him there.” And when Armstrong set foot on the moon, all of America — and the world — felt as if they were there with him. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Armstrong’s “one small step,” this month’s TV schedule features a galaxy of soaring space-related programming. Here are some of our favorites.

8 Days: To the Moon and Back PBS, July 17 The flight of Apollo 11 lasted eight days, three hours, 18 minutes, 35 seconds — a mere moment in the history of our universe — but that trip, which culminated with a step onto an alien world, has left an everlasting mark on humanity. This dramatization of Apollo 11’s historic journey blends actual mission audio featuring candid conversations among Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins with actors reenacting their historic flight, NASA archival footage and CGI animation re-creating the moon landing.

Apollo: The Forgotten Films Discovery Channel, July 20 This original documentary employs footage from NASA, the National Archives and news reports to present a comprehensive, behind-thescenes look at the exhaustive preparation that went into sending the first humans to our moon. The special pays tribute not only to the daring astronauts of Apollo 11, but also to the unseen army of engineers and scientists who helped achieve America’s greatest technological feat.

Battle Of The 80s Supercars With

David Hasselhoff There’s a lot to love about the former Knight Rider and Baywatch star David Hasselhoff, but one of our favorite things is his humble candor — he’s never been afraid to just tell it as it is. After 40-plus years in the business, the international superstar radiates positivity as he talks to us about what’s on the horizon, which includes a tour in the fall, a possible Knight Rider movie and a two-hour special on History titled Battle of the 80s Supercars With David Hasselhoff. The special is part of History’s now annual Car Week (July 7-13). Here the Hoff shares some insights on just how fun and enlightening this special truly is. How the Knight Rider car KITT and the special came about. David Hasselhoff: What happened was they called me and said, “We would like you to do the History channel.” And I said, “No, I don’t really want to do reality television, and I’m not really into the car situation.” And they said, “But it’s really about the Knight Rider car coming true.” And I said, “You know what? That’s an interesting idea!” When we were doing Knight Rider

6

[which ran for four seasons from 1982-86], we had no idea. Michael Scheffe, who is the guy who created the car, was a student at an art college in Pasadena — now he’s a teacher there — and he just went out and designed the car, and he designed the Back to the Future car, too. … I went to his place, and he was teaching there, and he showed me some of the original sketches and talked about how this whole thing came about. … I also got to compare all the cars of today with the KITT car. And I got to see some of the most mind-boggling technology that’s out there. … We are going to secret places that develop stuff for the Air Force. Unbelievable cars that open and talk to your watch, that drive themselves. It’s just everything that we can put on paper, like in a coloring book with KITT, came true.

The Hoff Talks KITT, Racing Against Former ’80s Stars And His Love Of “Knight Rider.” By Barb Oates

The special reunited Hasselhoff with other ’80s stars. I got to renew my friendship with Erik Estrada [Ponch from CHiPs] and Dirk Benedict [Faceman from The A-Team]. We were like three kids, like 14-year-olds. … We were all having a great laugh about how we survived, and we’re still doing it, and we had so much fun. We had too much fun, to be honest. I’m usually the funniest guy around, I think, and these guys were funnier than me. We ended up becoming fast friends again. And then another girl showed up from The Dukes of Hazzard, and Morgan Fairchild comes spinning in as a cameo, and Catherine Bach.

Battle of the 80s Supercars With David Hasselhoff History,

Wednesday, July 10

Battle eventually turns into an actual race. I had a car from Knight Rider — I don’t know if it was the real one, or if it was a replica, but it was in pretty good shape. And then Erik had his old motorcycle, and Dirk had the van. And the van was in pretty damn good shape. The motorcycle was a little bit scary. I said to Erik, “You’re actually going to ride this thing?” Well, the best part about Erik is he didn’t crash. … But he could drive it. I was impressed. I mean, I know how to ride a bike and I’ve gone down on a bike and it scared the hell out of me a long time ago. And I said forget it. But Dirk and the van, he was crazy. It was really hard to catch him. … The car I was driving was really squirrely, and I was all over the place. But I like that. I’m really good at driving squirrely and all over the place.
