We keep animals in our homes as pets for affection and love, but sometimes, these pets go above and beyond to keep us safe. A&E’s new series An Animal Saved My Life (Tuesdays beginning July 6) highlights moments where our beloved animals risk their own lives to save their human’s. The series is hosted by Curt Menefee — best known for hosting on FOX during the football season — and features viral videos and surveillance footage as well as interviews with people who have been saved by animal heroes of all kinds. There are some scary situations, but because of the heroism of these creatures, there can be a happy ending.

IMPRACTICAL FUN!

Ask just about anyone about the Impractical Jokers and you’ll get the standard “I love those guys.” The quartet of lifelong friends — James “Murr” Murray, Joe Gatto, Sal Vulcano and Brian “Q” Quinn — have been putting each other in awkwardly embarrassing candid-camera stunts for almost 10 years now via their hit TV comedy series Impractical Jokers. Known as both their stand-up name the Tenderloins and as the Impractical Jokers, their witty banter and endearingly cruel oneupmanship have made them age adverse and just universally appealing. This month, the guys have a lot going on — everything on truTV — beginning with their special The Impractical Jokers Awards (Thursday, July 1), where they will celebrate specific stunts and jokes from the 200plus episodes of the series. Also on tap is the network premiere of their hysterical hit movie Impractical Jokers: The Movie (July 1), which sees the guys playing teenage versions of themselves as they tell a humiliating high school mishap from 1992. That story sends the guys on a presentday road trip where they engage in hidden-camera challenges for the chance to turn back the clock and find redemption. Lastly, new Season 9 episodes of Impractical Jokers return beginning July 8. — Barb Oates

OLYMPICS 2020

ON WITH THE GAMES! After a long year apart, the world comes together for the Tokyo Summer Olympic Games July 23-Aug. 8. This special section previews the top U.S. athletes and how to watch their stories unfold in what could be the most meaningful Olympics in history. By Ryan A. Berenz & Holly Friedel

What’s New?

Seven Exciting Additions To The Tokyo Games.

Carissa Moore, Surfing

The inaugural Olympic surfing competition will take place on Tsurigasaki Beach on Japan’s Pacific coastline. Shortboards will be used in the competition, meaning longboards and bodyboards are prohibited for this year’s Games. Surfers not only compete against one another, but also against Mother Nature herself. The athletes will be judged on the type and difficulty of the skills performed, as well as speed, power and flow. Scoring is from 1 to 10 with two decimals. 4

2

Skateboarding

Olympic skateboarding has two disciplines: street and park. Street competition consists of jumps, handrails, flatground tricks and more executed during the runs. Park takes place in a dome-shaped bowl where athletes are judged on tricks, flow, execution and overall impression within timed runs.

3

Karate

Disciplines include kata and kumite forms. Kata karate involves precise form when executing patterns and movements solo or in pairs. Kumite karate is using kata techniques against an opponent face-to-face. The competition will be held at Nippon Budokan, a spiritual home of martial arts.

4

Baseball/Softball

Baseball (men) and softball (women) return to the Olympics after being voted out of the 2012 Games. Both sports will consist of six-team tournaments, making this the most exclusive Olympic event. Baseball consists of an opening round that determines placing, and a knockout stage with a double-elimination format. Depending on their performance, the teams will then advance to the medal games. The six softball teams play one game against each team and are ranked by a win/ loss record. The top teams advance to the gold medal games, with the next two sent to the bronze medal games. The teams with the two worst records are eliminated.

5

3x3 Basketball

Inspired by street hoops, a 3x3 basketball team has four players with three on the court at all times. The games are played on a half-court with only one hoop. The scoring differs from regular basketball: A two-point shot resides outside the typical threepoint arc, and a one-point shot is anything before that line. The winner is the team with the most points after the 10-minute game, or whichever team reaches 21 points first.

6

Sport Climbing

Using a variety of hand- and footholds, climbers use their skills to ascend vertical walls, which can feature varying rock faces such as vertical, slab and overhang. The sport contains three disciplines: speed, bouldering and lead. Speed includes two climbers scaling a 15-meter wall quicker than their opponent. In bouldering, athletes climb as many fixed routes as they can within four minutes on a 4.5meter wall. Lead climbing consists of athletes climbing as high as they can on a wall greater than 15 meters within six minutes.

7

Mixed Events

Gender equality and women’s participation are a major focus at the Tokyo Games, and mixed competitions will be seen in swimming, track and field, table tennis and more. A 4x100-meter mixed medley relay swim team consists of two men and two women. Similarly, the 4x400-meter relay race features teams made up of two male and two female runners. Table tennis has created mixed doubles teams.

OLYMPICS 2020

Simply The Best Allyson Felix, Track and Field Since making her Olympic debut at the 2004 Athens Games, sprinting legend Felix has won six gold and three silver medals — more Olympic medals than any other American female track and field athlete. She’ll look to add to her total in Tokyo for what will be her final Games.

Caeleb Dressel, Swimming Dressel could be Michael Phelps’ heir apparent for U.S. swimming superstardom. After winning two relay gold medals in Rio, Dressel is almost guaranteed to be the most decorated athlete in Tokyo. Seven gold medals is a real possibility.

Katie Ledecky, Swimming Ledecky’s greatness cannot be overstated. At age 15, she shocked the world with a gold in the 800-meter freestyle in the 2012 London Games. She followed that up in Rio with four gold medals, one silver medal and two world records. At age 24, Ledecky could sweep the 200-, 400-, 800- and 1,500meter freestyle events and have more career gold medals than any female swimmer in Olympic history.

John John Florence, Surfing Florence, who turned pro at age 13, is a two-time world champion and one of the best pipe surfers of his generation. He overcame a torn ACL to qualify for Tokyo, and is a favorite to be surfing’s first Olympic men’s champion.

Simone Biles, Gymnastics Biles, who many call the greatest gymnast of all time, is expected to make more history at the Tokyo Games. In 2016, Biles left the Olympic arena with four gold medals (a record for an American female gymnast) and one bronze. At the 2021 U.S. Classic, Biles landed the dangerous Yurchenko double pike — a vault no woman has ever landed before. She continues to push boundaries for the sport, and now has four gymnastics skills named after her. And at 24, Biles is only getting better with age. 6

Simone Manuel, Swimming Manuel made history in Rio by becoming the first Black American swimmer to win an individual gold medal, tying with Canada’s Penny Oleksiak in the 100-meter freestyle. Manuel’s even faster now. She’s a clear contender for gold in the 50- and 100-meter freestyle individual events, and a strong link on relay teams.

Megan Rapinoe, Soccer Rapinoe’s veteran leadership and competitive fire have Team USA — the reigning FIFA Women’s World Cup champion — in prime shape to rebound from its loss to Sweden in the quarterfinal round at the Rio Games. Noah Lyles, Track and Field The current world champion in the 200-meter sprint (and the fourth-fastest man ever

Lilly King, Swimming Breaststroke specialist King brought home two gold medals from the 2016 Rio Games. She’s the world record holder in the 100-meter breaststroke (long course), and is the favorite for gold in the event in Tokyo. Keep an eye on King’s fierce rivalry with Russia’s Yuliya Efimova.

recorded at that distance), Lyles is making his Olympic debut in Tokyo. The Florida native is already being compared to Jamaican legend Usain Bolt. Alix Klineman, Beach Volleyball April Ross has a new partner in the top women’s beach volleyball tandem for Team USA. At 6 feet 5 inches tall, Klineman is one of the best blockers in the world, and she gives the U.S. an excellent chance to start a new streak of Olympic dominance in the sport.

Nyjah Huston, Skateboarding Global skateboarding superstar Huston — winner of 13 gold medals at the X-Games — is a master at street boarding and odds are good he’ll be taking home gold in that event when it makes its Olympic debut in Tokyo. Will Claye, Track and Field Two-time reigning Olympic triple jump champion Christian Taylor is shelved due to injury, but Team USA has a more-than-adequate backup: Claye was Taylor’s runner-up at both the London and Rio Games. Expect Claye to seize the golden opportunity. Sha’Carri Richardson, Track and Field With her flashy speed and style, Richardson could be Team USA’s first Olympic gold medalist in the women’s 100-meter sprint since Gail Devers in the 1996 Atlanta Games. Earlier this year, she clocked the sixth-fastest time ever recorded in the women’s 100meter.

Olympic Stadium/ National Stadium

Tokyo’s Unique Olympic Venues Tokyo’s new Olympic Stadium was completed in 2019, with an official capacity of 68,000. This venue, previously known as National Stadium, will host the opening and closing Olympic ceremonies, the women’s gold medal competition in soccer, and various track and field events. Fukushima Azuma Baseball Stadium will host a total of seven games between the baseball and softball tournaments. Not only is this venue spectacular, but it also contains symbolic importance to Japan, for it represents the area’s recovery from a tsunami, earthquake and nuclear disaster in 2011. Nippon Budokan was created for the 1964 Games for judo and has since become a symbolic venue for martial arts. This year, the venue will make history for hosting the first ever karate event for the Olympic Games. Tokyo Aquatics Center is nothing short of magnificent, for it has a capacity of 15,000 and movable walls and floors. The adjusting walls and floors allow the venue to easily change the length and depth of the pools. Gymnastics will be held at the Ariake Gymnastics Center in the Tokyo Bay Zone. The wooden architecture, on both outside and inside, was inspired by the area previously being a timber storage location. The seating inside the arena is made from wood as well.

Olympics Q&A Why are they still calling it Tokyo 2020 if it’s now 2021? Before the Games were postponed last year, the Tokyo 2020 name and logo were used everywhere for merchandise, signage, sponsorships and medals. Replacing everything would be really expensive. From a legal standpoint, the Olympics already own the rights to the Tokyo 2020 name, and reapplying for Tokyo 2021 would’ve been an arduous process. There’s also never been an Olympics with an odd-numbered year attached to it. Tokyo’s governor declared, “An odd number is out of the question.”

Did athletes who already qualified for the Games last year have to requalify? No. Approximately 6,500 athletes had already qualified for the Games before they were postponed last year, and they will keep their spots. Some age rules, like boxing’s 40-year-old limit, have been relaxed. 7

Your TiVo Experience Road Map

OOPS! MY SHOW DIDN’T RECORD. WHY DID THAT HAPPEN?

We’re happy to help. Below we offer some troubleshooting instructions to get your TiVo DVR set to capture all your favorites. The instructions vary depending on the model of your TiVo, so we list both the new model and the classic. 1. Check your service connection status to make sure your DVR is connected. If you have the newer TiVo experience: From the Home Screen, select the Menu icon, Settings and then Network Settings. If you have the classic TiVo experience: From TiVo Central, choose Settings and then Network Settings. 2. View your recording activity or history for an explanation of why the show didn’t record. If you have the newer TiVo experience: From the Home Screen, select the Menu icon, Manage and then Recording Activity. For customers with the classic TiVo experience: From TiVo Central, choose My Shows, followed by Search & OnePass and then History.

Services may not be available in all areas, and some restrictions apply. Minimum of Midco Internet 50 and cable TV are required for TiVo DVR services. Not all TiVo DVRs are compatible with the newer TiVo Experience. Contact Midco with questions. TiVo and the TiVo logo are registered trademarks of TiVo Inc. and its subsidiaries worldwide.

Some reasons why your show might not have recorded include: ■ There was a conflict with a repeated recording. When there is a conflict, shows are recorded according to their priority in your OnePass Manager. You should adjust priorities according to your preferences to prevent a conflict in the future. ■ Your OnePass is set to record new episodes only, and the show was a rerun. You can change that option and record new and repeat episodes by adjusting your settings in the OnePass search settings. ■ There was a conflict when requesting another show, and you accepted the proposed resolution to delete the missing show earlier than planned. ■ There was a power outage that affected the recording.
