Over the course of Shark Week, the actor will set up the jaw-dropping events, firsttime revelations and groundbreaking scientific findings in this year’s specials. “As the host of Shark Week, I am beyond excited to take you along on this journey,” Momoa says. “My love of sharks came long before my time as Aquaman — it began several generations before me.”

urvivalist Bear Grylls has been pushing us all out of our comfort zones for more than 10 years now, with his various extreme adventure series. His current, Running Wild With Bear Grylls: The Challenge, returns for a new season Sunday, July 9, on Nat Geo. We caught up with Grylls just days before his 49th birthday, which he planned to spend with his wife and three boys on an Alaskan mini-adventure. Filled with gratitude — “I’m super lucky to be alive. I look back and think gosh, I should have died so many times over on many expeditions, many moments caught in rapids, parachute failures, avalanches, you name it” — and happiness to have a family, job and crew he loves, he answered a few of our questions.
As you get older, is it harder to push yourself on these adventures?
Bear Grylls: Yes, it has gotten harder as I’ve gotten older, but hard isn’t bad. Hard is a challenge and we’ve always got to try to rise up to meet that, and as we get older it just means we have to train differently and be smart. I do a lot more stretching now, but in many ways I’m stronger and fitter than I have been for years, and I think that’s down to just nailing nutrition and simple hacks about living life: getting outside every morning for fresh air with bare feet, cold water, weight training, resistance training, and lots of red meat, lots of organ meat, raw dairy — like cheese and yogurt, good source of butter, lots of fruit, and lots of honey. That’s how I eat.
You’ve got quite the lineup of celebrities venturing out with you again this season. What do you have in store for Bradley Cooper?
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230628162731-7bfecca9f45773104889f38c0a5535f4/v1/48743014367c6ab7b0724d4b8d6c04a7.jpeg)
Bradley was amazing. We had loads of fun — a good meeting of minds. He’s a humble guy and lives with a real sense of purpose and gratitude in his life and I loved it. [This episode] was one of the special ones for me. We had tough conditions — Wyoming in winter is not for the faint of heart. He definitely got both barrels of Running Wild, but he was in it and what I’ve learned about him is he is totally committed. Look at how he approaches his projects: writes, directs, produces all these films that take years, and with [Running Wild ] he was all in. He was courageous, kind, fun, humble and brilliant.
Benedict Cumberbatch is also heading out with you. What’s in store for him, and
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230628162731-7bfecca9f45773104889f38c0a5535f4/v1/3794dd56682fbec3a24245400bc2b344.jpeg)
does he have it harder than the others?
I loved this [adventure]. Likewise with Bradley, he’s become a good friend. It’s always a pleasure to do these journeys with a fellow Brit, and we laughed a lot. Again, he had tough conditions. Northern Scotland, the Isle of Skye in winter was brutal weather, and quite similar to Bradley, Benedict was a true professional and all in. He really wanted to do [Running Wild], it was on his bucket list and he gave his all, and was super impressive throughout. We had an incredible finale [to our journey] where I asked a favor to the Royal Navy and they sent us a nuclear submarine to meet us off the coast and they did our extraction for us off of the Isle of Skye. That was special because Benedict’s grandfather had been a submariner during the war and there was a lot of emotion for him.
Russell Brand also joins you this season. What worried you about him, and was he able to keep things serious enough to focus on survival?
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230628162731-7bfecca9f45773104889f38c0a5535f4/v1/2e02f64b7b9f71c4595777cf49e220a5.jpeg)
Russell, also a fellow Brit, has been a friend for many years. [That adventure] I think we laughed more than any other trip I’ve ever done with anyone. We were in Scotland in the summertime and wore kilts, slept in an old castle, and he still texts me to this day going, “I’m traumatized from the sight of crawling over the top of a cliff seeing [Bear] hauling me up with [Bear’s] kilt on with no underpants,” but what a great guy! We laughed a lot and his [story], especially out of everyone I’ve taken [on the show], has been one of the most extreme. From being a heroin addict, an atheist, to a true spiritual guru, who is rich in faith, family, love, and I think his story will blow people away.
What episode/adventure caused you the greatest amount of stress and why?
I think the one with Benedict and trying to meet the nuclear submarine on time. There were a lot of moving parts on that including weather, timing and wondering if this [submarine] was going to emerge out of the sea while we’re on this kayak miles off the coast. Benedict didn’t know what we’re doing, I’m looking at my GPS praying that I’ve got my latitude and longitude coordinates right and that we’re going to turn up [at the submarine] on cue. That was probably one of the most special moments ever filming for me.

JUSTIFIED: CITY PRIMEVAL
Tuesdays beginning July 18 on FX
NEW LIMITED SERIES!
You knew we hadn’t seen the end of Raylan Givens.
Timothy Olyphant is back in the Stetson cowboy hat as Givens, the deputy U.S. Marshal from Kentucky made famous by Elmore Leonard’s crime novels and the FX series Justified (2010-15). The new eight-episode limited series Justified: City Primeval is based on Leonard’s 1980 novel City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit and debuts with the first two episodes.

JUSTIFIED: CITY PRIMEVAL
Fear not, Justified fans. Raylan is in good hands with creatives Graham Yost, Dave Andron, Michael Dinner and other Justified veterans — plus Peter Leonard, son of the late Elmore — back for City Primeval. It’s not Justified Season 7, nor is it a full-blown series reboot. It’s what FX is calling “an extension of the universe” of Justified, and the viewer can jump right in to City Primeval without any prior run-ins with Raylan.
Timothy Olyphant“We felt we could take this story that we really liked a lot and we could inject Raylan into it and tonally do a show that’s similar, but also let the show that we did grow up a little bit,” says writer/director/ executive producer Dinner. “We felt that what we’ve done is something that is true to the show, but not the same show.”
Olyphant was fully onboard. “I really didn’t have any concerns,” he says. “I love these guys. And Elmore Leonard and Graham Yost gave us so much material to launch what I’ve always thought was potentially numerous stories. I thought as long as we were still in the Elmore Leonard world and the Graham Yost world that the two of them created, I just thought I’d love to be there for it.”
City Primeval opens with Givens on his way to drop off his teenage daughter, Willa (played by Olyphant’s daughter Vivian), at camp in Florida. But their road trip takes a wildly different course when Givens arrests two would-be carjackers, one of whom has outstanding warrants in Michigan. Now stuck with Willa, Givens has to testify in
Detroit. Unfortunately, the judge in the case (a brilliant Keith David) has lots of enemies and was the target of an assassination attempt that morning. A twist of interconnected characters and events that could only happen in Leonardland results in Givens matching wits with the sociopathic Clement “The Oklahoma Wildman” Mansell (Boyd Holbrook) and his girlfriend Sandy Stanton (Adelaide Clemens).

of Sandy. “She’s into conning people, she loves her weed and there’s a certain rush to being out of your head. I think it’s the only way she knows how to operate.” Unlike her psychotic boyfriend, Sandy has some moral boundaries. “She can kind of go along for the ride to a certain extent, but she doesn’t ever take it as far as killing people,” Clemens says.
Elmore Leonard excelled at tapping into that moral gray area that good guys and bad guys share. In City Primeval, defense lawyer Carolyn Wilder (Aunjanue Ellis) excels at getting dangerous perpetrators off the hook on technicalities, and those sworn to uphold the law and serve justice are corruptible.

“He would love this new series,” Peter Leonard says of his father. “His book City Primeval, I think, is one of his crown jewels. ... It is such great TV, eight just wonderfully suspenseful episodes with a great cast supporting it all.”

Donna Mills, the quintessential 1980s villainess from the cul-de-sac of Knots Landing, returns to television as an even more malevolent antagonist in a four-part Lifetime movie series adapted from Flowers in the Attic author V.C. Andrews’ Dawn Cutler book series.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230628162731-7bfecca9f45773104889f38c0a5535f4/v1/a916d2fcae257c80e11a33594fcaa38f.jpeg)
Starring Brec Bassinger as Dawn, all four films revolve around the wealthy Cutler family, one that is as secretive as it is powerful. Secrets of the Morning, Twilight’s Child and Midnight Whispers will follow Dawn, though only the first three include Mills as the wicked grandmother and hotel heiress Lillian Cutler. Asked about the experience of playing another villain, Mills told us it was a lot of fun.
“To play your character in three movies is a lot better than having just one. You have a lot of time to develop it,” she gushed. “I liked the thought of her from the very beginning. She is very hard on Dawn, but she’s interesting. You wonder why she’s as mean as she is.” This is very true; one does wonder, while
V.C. Andrews is probably most well known for the 1979 book Flowers in the Attic, which was turned into a popular movie starring Kristy Swanson and Louise Fletcher in 1987. The Lifetime adaptation of this story spanned across four films: Flowers in the Attic (2014), Petals on the Wind (2014), If There Be Thorns (2015) and Seeds of Yesterday (2015).
V.C. Andrews’ Heaven Casteel series followed Heaven as she turned difficult origins into a life of wealth and privilege, only to have her past catch up with her. The 2019 Lifetime films included Heaven, Dark Angel, Fallen Hearts, Web of Dreams and Gates of Paradise.

watching Dawn, what makes Lillian so evil. When Dawn first shows up at the massive Cutler estate, Lillian forces her to work as a maid before even introducing her to her real parents.
“The thing is, as an actor, you don’t think of your character as being mean. You know what I mean? Because a person doesn’t think of themselves as being mean; it’s just the way they are,” Mills explained. “So, when you prepare to play a role like this, you just find her motivations, whether they’re right or wrong, or whether they’re evil or not. You just have to find those things. And you don’t think of them as good or bad because she doesn’t think of them as good or bad. They’re just her motivations.”
As is often the case, Lillian’s hostility has to do with her past. “There’s a fifth book called Darkest Hour, which they’re not doing, but it explains Lillian and why she is the way she is,” Mills explained. “And so having that in my tool chest, to know all that, made it really much easier and better to play her.”
Mills enjoys playing these types of twisted, complicated characters; she

told us her favorite two roles during her career were Abby from Knots Landing and then her most recent role as Lillian Cutler. “Lillian had a horrible upbringing. There were some sick things that happened. If you know V.C. Andrews’ mind and how twisted it is, you can imagine. But that makes it really interesting to play. I loved it. I hope they adapt the fifth novel so that the audience can get to know why she is the way she is.”
Dawn, the titular character of the film series, is a direct antithesis to Lillian: sweet, optimistic and innocent to the point of naive. In the first 30 minutes of the film, she has her entire life thrown upside down when she discovers she was kidnapped as a child and that she is actually related to the Cutlers, after which she is sent to live with them.
“Yeah, she’s young and she is innocent. She’s had a life with a loving, lovely family who she thinks is her family and they aren’t. So it’s a very interesting situation that she finds herself in,” Mills said. “She’s pretty strong when all is said and done, but boy, she goes through a lot.” —
Zhanna SlorYou can’t interview Donna Mills, the feisty villainess of the drama-fueled culde-sac in Knots Landing (1979-93), without asking a few questions on the soapy favorite.
Did you take anything from the Knots Landing set with you?
Donna Mills: I have the Abby Ewing nameplate from my desk, and there were clothes and stuff like that I got, because I had gotten them the franchise with Escada. And so Escada said that I could have the clothes. Did you stay in touch with anyone from the cast? Oh, yes. As a matter of fact, Joan [Van Ark] and Michele [Lee] and I have done a number of shows together. It’s called An Evening With, and the three of us are on a stage with a moderator, and we all have video and stuff like that. And then the audience gets to

The V.C. Andrews Ruby Landry series followed a different young woman as she uncovered the dark secrets of her wealthy, mysterious estranged father. The 2021 Lifetime films included Ruby, Pearl in the Mist, All That Glitters and Hidden Jewel.

Mattel’s famous Barbie is having her moment. The doll is getting the red-carpet treatment with the theatrical release Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, hitting theaters July 21, and HGTV’s new Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge set to debut along with it. The four-episode challenge is

SURVIVE THE RAFT
Sundays beginning July 30 on DISCOVERY CHANNEL NEW SERIES!
In 1973, Mexican anthropologist Santiago Genovés did a behavioral study that observed whether humans from diverse cultures and backgrounds could set aside their differences and work together during a 101-day voyage on the Acali. Now, 50 years later, Discovery Channel revisits his work with a new raft and a new twist that finds nine diverse contestants in Panama’s Pearl Islands, where they set sail on Acali II for 21 days of grueling physical and intellectual competition. All will be tested to see if personal interest will sabotage the team’s chance to win a fortune together. Every week, participants are tasked with completing challenges designed to disrupt and divide the group. Each successful mission will earn the team money that they will split evenly if they can make it to the end. Every episode, however, sees the crew of the Acali II given an option to continue as a group, or swap one of their own for a new participant. Will the good for all outweigh the good for one?

HUMAN FOOTPRINT
Wednesdays beginning July 5 on PBS NEW SERIES!
In our short time on the 4.5 billion-year-old Earth, humans have brought light to the night sky, cultivated land to grow food and transformed swampland into jungles of steel and concrete.
Biologist Shane Campbell-Staton is the tour guide of this six-part documentary series that takes viewers on an illuminating exploration of how human progress and technology have changed Earth’s physical and ecological makeup.

Human Footprint looks into how global transportation has given a free ride to non-native species, how wolves developed into our closest friends, how modern cities are homes to the natural world in surprising ways and how a single plant — cotton — forever changed humanity.
“Hosting Human Footprint has been one of the greatest adventures of my life,” Campbell-Staton says. “This journey really helped me to better understand the depth and breadth of our impact. We are so intricately connected to the world around us in so many ways. I hope this series helps others to see and think about those connections in new ways.” —

Fridays beginning July 28 on STARZ SEASON PREMIERE!
It’s a tale as old as time, two brothers sparring. In this world, Arrow’s Stephen Amell is strapped with trying to keep the family legacy his father built, DWL (Duffy Wrestling League), afloat, but is at odds with his talented brother Ace (Vikings’ Alexander Ludwig) at almost every turn. Who the heel — a wrestling term to describe the villain — is in this season isn’t quite clear yet as their sibling rivalry inside and outside of the ring gets way too real. The series is a fascinating and heartfelt drama about small-town America and chasing your dreams. Pin yourself down this summer and enjoy the spectacle.

8 THE BLACKLIST
Thursday, July 13 on NBC SERIES FINALE!
After 10 seasons, the hit crime thriller led by Golden Globe nominee James Spader as Raymond “Red” Reddington comes to an end with a two-hour series finale. Diego Klattenhoff, Hisham Tawfiq, Anya Banerjee and Harry Lennix star alongside Spader.

While plot details of the finale weren’t known at presstime, Tawfiq, who has been with the series since its second episode in 2013 as Dembe Zuma — in a recurring role the first two seasons, and as a regular since — reflected on how special his experience on the series has been.
“I had an amazing time working on The Blacklist ! This experience was special because I was able to create a character that I’ve never seen on TV. Being Muslim and playing a character of Muslim faith with an African accent was historic, in my opinion.
“The one thing that will always stick out for me,” Tawfiq adds, “is Episode 109 [‘Anslo Garrick,’ the ninth episode of Season 1]. Anslo Garrick [Ritchie Coster] being able to recite a prayer in Arabic opposite James Spader will always be an iconic moment for me and the series. [I’m] forever grateful for the experience and opportunity.”

Throughout July on TCM
Turner Classic Movies will be celebrating the life and career of singer, actor, producer and activist Harry Belafonte, who passed away April 25 at the age of 96, with a special programming tribute this month. The primary memorial salute will take place with a double feature of Belafonte’s films on the evening of Saturday, July 22. It begins with Carmen Jones (1954), an adaptation of Oscar Hammerstein II’s 1943 stage musical with Belafonte, Dorothy Dandridge and Pearl Bailey leading an all-Black cast. Dandridge received a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her title role, making her the first African American to be nominated in this category. Following that is The World, the Flesh and the Devil (1959), a Hugo Award-nominated postapocalyptic/sci-fi drama in which one woman (Inger Stevens) and two men (Belafonte and Mel Ferrer) are the only people left alive after a nuclear disaster.
Earlier in the month, on Monday, July 10, Belafonte’s daughter, Shari Belafonte, spends an evening as guest programmer for TCM. The first of three films she will introduce that evening is Odds Against Tomorrow (1959), a film noir starring her father and Robert Ryan.
of Sunday, July 16, the drama
will be featured during TCM’s Disability in the Movies spotlight in July. It marked Belafonte’s first feature film appearance and his first onscreen pairing with Dandridge, and it is where he debuted his song “Suzanne (Every Night When the Sun Goes Down).”
