COURTENEY COX Tries To Find Her Sanity In The Scary-Funny Shining Vale

TV NEWS

What’s been your strangest or most interesting fan encounter? I was at Kenny Smith’s party at the All-Star Game in 2013 in Houston. I hadn’t been on television that long at that point, and I walk in, and this dude sees me and just stops and does everything short of the guy in Coming to America when he sees Prince Akeem at the Garden. He’s just, “Oh, my God! Oh, man, you my dawg! You my favorite!” He just kept going on and on, and it was getting kind of embarrassing. After he walked away, somebody walked up to me and said, “Are you [sports journalist] J.A. Adande?” I said no and just walked away.

QUESTIONS WITH BOMANI JONES OF HBO’S “GAME THEORY” By Ryan A. Berenz

Can you tell us about a time you were starstruck? That same Kenny Smith party in Houston, I’m walking up to the club and I see Charles Barkley and Ernie Johnson with the TNT crew. I stop and talk to them. I can’t believe that I’m just there hanging out talking to these guys. My best friend is there with me, and we are about to get into the line for the club that’s so long. And while we’re standing there, whoever’s letting them in the back door says, “Hey, let’s go.” And Charles says, “Oh, yeah, Bomani’s coming with us.” And I was like, “Oh, really?” And I walked with Charles Barkley and Ernie, and I got halfway up the steps before I realized I left my homeboy outside. Just completely swept up in the moment. What’s a movie that you can watch over and over again? Somehow, even though it’s not the highest qualitative work ever, I could still watch Half Baked with Dave Chappelle over and over again just to get to the Bob Saget scene. What’s your favorite sports team? I did realize as that World Series run hit, that Atlanta Braves, despite all the reasons I want to quit you, I will never really be able to. That was the first love I had in this world that wasn’t family, and I guess it probably always will be.

Bomani Jones is renowned for his insightful sports commentary, unflinching arguments and merciless beatdowns of fools on Twitter. The host of The Right Time podcast and former ESPN TV pundit joins the ranks of Bob Costas and Bryant Gumbel with his own HBO show, Game Theory With Bomani Jones, late-nights on Sundays beginning March 13. “What we’re trying to do here is take my various thoughts that I’ve had about all things sports and figure out how to put it into that deep space, that third dimension,” Jones says. “It’s going to be based primarily on my opinions and my views and looks at the world, and then it’s going to be beefed up by HBO.” Jones beefed up this edition of our “4 Questions”:

Turner Classic Movies’ 31 Days of Oscar celebration continues to be one of the best-loved annual network programming events. This year the network offers a different spin, as it is putting aside the old cliché of “it’s an honor just to be nominated” to populate its 31 Days of Oscar lineup — airing March 1-31 (the Oscar ceremony is on March 27) — only with movies that have actually won at least one Oscar (including Honorary Awards). What an honor!”

Awards season culminates with its premier event as 2021’s most acclaimed films are honored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with that famous little statuette handed out across various categories during the 94th Oscars ceremony, which airs live on ABC Sunday, March 27. This year’s event is still being impacted by the ongoing pandemic, and not just in its delayed date (it had originally been slated for Feb. 27). One exciting change this year is that not only will there be a host for the ceremony for the first time since 2018, when Jimmy Kimmel led the festivities, but there will be three hosts. Actor Regina Hall, comedian/actor Amy Schumer and comedian/actor Wanda Sykes will be the first female trio to be at the helm for this event. “We want people to get ready to have a good time,”

SHINING VALE NEW SERIES!

Women are roughly twice as likely as men to suffer from depression. Symptoms include: sense of helplessness, insomnia, change in sex drive, hallucinations and feeling completely out of control. Women are also roughly twice as likely to be possessed by a demon. The symptoms are the same … So begins this brilliantly crafted comedy-kind-of-psychological-horror 6

story about a dysfunctional family who escapes city life in favor of saving their family by moving to a quaint little town in the middle of nowhere. While their house is definitely an upgrade — and it should be, as they liquidated just about everything to afford the sprawling old mansion — no one clued them in on the terrible atrocities that actually took place there. The series features an all-star cast that includes Courteney Cox, Greg Kinnear, Mira Sorvino, Judith Light, Sherilyn Fenn and Merrin Dungey. Cox stars as Patricia “Pat” Phelps, who’s convinced she’s either possessed or

depressed (or maybe even both). “I love to be scared and I love to laugh, and this is such a unique combination of these two things,” Cox says. “This genre I’ve never seen before. It deals with real-life issues — family, infidelity, mental illness, fill in the blanks. It was just so rich, and funny, and great.” Pat is a former “wild child” who rose to fame by writing a raunchy, drug-and-alcohol-soaked women’s empowerment novel (aka lady porn). Now, 17 years later, she is under the gun by her publisher to deliver a follow-up novel or face paying back the

advance she’s long since spent. She’s also trying to save her marriage to her wood-chopping-obsessed husband Terry (Kinnear) — he’s got reasons for the chopping — and offer some normalcy for her oddball children Gaynor (Gus Birney) and Jake (Dylan Gage). Oh, and now that she’s clean and sober, she’s got a severe case of writer’s block. But that’s not her real problem. Enter Rosemary (Sorvino). A glamorous ghost of sorts who’s equal parts creepy and naughty, who is either Pat’s alter ego, a split personality, her muse or a demon trying to possess her. Who knows, but she’s fabulous.

Being careful not to share too much, Sorvino explained her sharp-dressed character as someone only visible to Pat. “I may or may not have existed in the ’50s in the form of an unhappy housewife who dreams of the stage or the screen,” Sorvino laughs, during a Television Critics Association press panel on the series. “And I may be good or I may be naughty. And I try and enlist Courteney’s character on a series of somewhat self-oriented adventures so that I can live through her a little bit. … She’s kind of funny, can be sort of scary, but ultimately I also try and find the vulnerability in her, even though she

might be doing some things that some might consider questionable.” The eight-episode series is cocreated and executive produced by Jeff Astrof (who got his break as a writer on Friends and went on to write/develop countless comedies) and Sharon Horgan (writer of HBO’s Divorce and star of Catastrophe). Can Rosemary help Pat get her groove back, or will she take her to the brink of insanity? Only time will tell, but we’re in for the ride — and all those jump scares and laughs along the way. — Barb Oates Premieres on Starz Sundays beginning March 6 7

SEASON PREMIERE!

Our beloved century-hopping doc Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe), her husband Jamie (Sam Heughan) and their clan finally return for the adventure romance’s sixth installment, adapted from Diana Gabaldon’s A Breath of Snow and Ashes. It’s been nearly two years — the longest “Droughtlander” ever — since the gutting May 2020 Season 5 finale that left Claire recovering from a brutal assault. “Claire wants to continue as if nothing had happened, but this is the first time she can’t suppress something,” Balfe says. “She’s a bit destabilized. That bleeds into every aspect of her life, including as a healer.” A Season 6 scene released on Christmas Day made us even more impatient. In it, Jamie and Claire, now at least physically healed, discuss his hesitancy to welcome a new settler — devout Tom Christie (Mark Lewis Jones), whom he knows from his terrible days at Ardsmuir Prison — to Fraser’s Ridge. Next, Jamie explains why he considers Claire his “angel,” to which she coos, “Would an angel do this?” before kissing him. Swoon. Jamie is right to be cautious about Christie. “Their different religious viewpoints cause conflict,” hints exec producer Maril Davis, adding that the safety of home starts to crack in these eight “jam-packed” episodes (the season opener is 90 minutes). Claire struggles with lingering psychological trauma, daughter Bree and her husband Roger (Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin) try for another baby, and the American Caitriona Revolution begins! — Kate Hahn Balfe and Sam Premieres on Starz Sundays Heughan beginning March 6

BRIDGERTON SEASON PREMIERE!

Sanditon: © Red Planet Ltd. Credit: Joss Barratt

Like Lady Whistledown’s gossip sheet about Regency England’s high society, Bridgerton had everyone talking when the romantic dramedy debuted on Christmas Day in 2020. And oh, dear reader, the wait for fancy balls, boudoir action, buff bods and bon mots is nearly over. With Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) now wed to the Duke of Hastings (former series star Regé-Jean Page), the focus shifts to her eldest brother, stubborn bachelor Anthony Bridgerton (the dashing Jonathan Bailey), who has decided he should settle down. The would-be bridegroom first sets his sights on endearing young Edwina Sharma (Charithra Chandran), but instead finds a possible match in her strong-willed older sister Kate (Simone Ashley). “This romance will be just as sweeping and beautiful as viewers have come to expect [from the show],” promises exec producer Chris Van Dusen. Ashley agrees, saying, “They’re very passionate!” Anthony isn’t the only Bridgerton

stirring up intrigue on the so-called marriage market. This season (based on the second book in Julia Quinn’s bestselling novel series) another sister, Eloise (Claudia Jessie), is forced to make herself available to suitors, despite her disdain for the process. “She’s never been one who enjoys being told what to do,” hints Van Dusen. Sounds like a lot of grist for the Whistledown scandal sheet! Speaking of which, now that viewers know the pseudonymous column’s author is Featherington family daughter Penelope (Nicola Coughlan), Van Dusen says we’ll get a peek at her methods: “Lady Whistledown always manages to get the good gossip and viewers get to see exactly … how the

SEASON PREMIERE! Jane Austen was chronically ill with a mysterious disease in early 1817 when she turned her thoughts to a happier subject and started working on a witty novel set in a seaside town. While she never finished it, screenwriter Andrew Davies (Pride and Prejudice, Les Misérables) took Austen’s plot and turned it into the glorious Sanditon, now starting its second season. When we last left off, Austen’s heroine Charlotte (Rose Williams) exited Sanditon sadder but wiser. Her love,

Bridgerton is also adding new faces sure to have bosoms heaving, including Rupert Young as new-intown Jack, who shakes up several people’s lives, and Rupert Evans as the Bridgertons’ late father, Edmund (seen in flashbacks). The new season finds things nine months later, when Charlotte returns to the nowbustling seaside resort with spirited younger sister Alison (Rosie Graham) and reunites with pal Georgiana (Crystal Clarke). Suitors abound! They include rich, reclusive Alexander Colbourne (Ben Lloyd-Hughes) and bohemian artist Charles Lockhart (Alexander Vlahos). Plus, an army regiment is in town. The series has already been renewed for a third season. Premieres on PBS Sundays beginning March 20 9

HOW WE ROLL NEW SERIES!

In 2008, Tom Smallwood of Saginaw, Michigan, lost his job at an auto assembly plant. Unable to find steady work, he decided to go all in on making his dream of becoming a professional bowler a reality. After two major championships and more than $600,000 in PBA Tour career earnings, Smallwood appears to have come out ahead on that gamble. Actor/writer/comedian/podcaster Pete Holmes steps into Smallwood’s bowling shoes for How We Roll, a new sitcom inspired by Smallwood’s leap of faith from the factory floor to the pinnacle of tenpins. “You have a job that maybe isn’t your dream job, but you need to support your family,” Holmes says. “And when the going gets really tough, you make a play at your dream because really you don’t know what else to do. Even if you don’t know bowling or relate to bowling, I think everybody can relate to what it feels like to take a 10

chance when so much is on the line, when your family is on the line and your livelihood is on the line.” Tom gets encouragement from his wife, Jen (Katie Lowes), a hairdresser who’s willing to go the extra mile to make this work. Their son, Sam (Mason Wells), a schoolkid with a talent for tap dancing, inspires his dad to go for it. And Tom’s buddy, mentor and sponsor, Archie (Chi McBride), owner of Archie’s Lanes: Home of the Curly Fry, is going to cash in when Tom makes it big. How We Roll has that comforting, familiar feel of a classic multicamera family sitcom, something that’s becoming increasingly rare on TV. “There aren’t that many family shows happening right now — not just shows for families, but shows that are for families and about those dynamics,” Holmes says. “I want to see a family that’s supporting each other, not just for the warmth of it, but also for the humor in that.” — Ryan A. The ’80s was a rowdy, exciting time in Los Angeles, and Jerry Buss (John C. Reilly) and his Los Angeles Lakers were at the center of it. Kicking off in 1979 with the drafting of 19-year-old Michigan State point guard Earvin “Magic” Johnson, this wildly entertaining 10-episode drama series explores the professional and personal lives of the Lakers as they become one of the most revered and dominant squads in basketball history. CRUEL INSTRUCTION ORIGINAL FILM!

Camryn Manheim (The Practice, Law & Order) credits Paris Hilton for starting the conversation about the abuses occurring at teen residential treatment programs. You know, those programs that hype tough love by sending kids off to a wilderness-like camp to get rehabilitated. Hilton’s This Is Paris documentary exposed what happened to her as a teen and her resulting ongoing PTSD. Lifetime continues the conversation with Cruel Instruction, a drama inspired by a true story, which tells the harrowing efforts of two young women (played by Kelcey Mawema and Morgan Taylor Campbell) who were mentally and physically abused at a Utah-based teen treatment program. Manheim plays headmistress Miss Connie (who reminds us a bit of Aunt Lydia from The Handmaid’s Tale), who uses draconian methods like force-feeding medications, solitary confinement, and verbal and physical abuse to keep students in line. “I don’t think most of us have the history of what’s going on. It was pretty shocking to me,” Manheim says about researching for the role. “It hit me really hard. … It’s like institutionalized child abuse. When you look more into it and really see the overwhelming evidence and testimonies, you really are heartbroken for not just the kids but for the families [who believed these institutions were safe].” While clearly not every teen institution is corrupt, what Manheim found extremely shocking was that these facilities are not regulated by the government. “It’s mind-boggling that this is going on without being regulated,” Manheim adds. “[Viewers] cannot imagine the atrocities that are happening in these schools that are posing as treatment centers for our youth. I want to make it really clear that this is not every school, but this is many schools. And as a community of really concerned parents, we have been duped and told many lies about what these schools are accomplishing. “It’s a great thing that we have finally arrived at a place in our history where our young people’s experiences and thoughts and recollections matter, because now real change can happen.” – Barb Oates Premieres on Lifetime Saturday, March 12

WHAT’S NEW WHEN CALLS THE HEART Season 9 of Hallmark’s hit series When Calls the Heart is upon us, and fans are still in an uproar over the way last season ended — with Elizabeth (Erin Krakow) finally deciding to pursue love with Lucas (Chris McNally) over her other suitor, Nathan (Kevin McGarry). The decision has even led some viewers to threaten boycotting the series altogether, believing that Elizabeth made the wrong decision. But star Krakow has some soothing words for those who feel slighted. “I know that our fans are particularly invested in and passionate about our show. So, I’m sorry to those who are feeling disappointed or frustrated,” she explains. “But I would also point out that Nathan isn’t going anywhere. And if Nathan is their favorite character, they still have a lot to look forward to with him. Nathan, in particular, I think, has some really juicy storylines this season. So I guess I would encourage [the audience] to stay tuned in support of their favorite character.” So how will Nathan factor into the show now that he’s no longer a love interest for Elizabeth? “Our show obviously has some really fun, romantic storylines, but it’s never been just about the romance,” Krakow says. “And so, we’re going to see Nathan, not just as a love interest, but as a real friend, as a father figure to Allie [Jaeda Lily Miller]. We’re going to see more of him in his Mountie role as a real hero in town. So he’s got a lot of good stuff coming up.” And was there a hint of something there with Faith (Andrea Brooks) at the end of the season, now that Carson (Paul Greene) has left town? “I will say you’re not wrong to pick up on that little tease,” she hints. “But we don’t know what’s coming in Nathan’s romantic future. Maybe there’s a spark between Nathan and Faith. Maybe there’s a spark between Nathan and an exciting newcomer in town. There’s all sorts of possibilities, and Nathan is a very eligible bachelor. So it’ll be exciting for all of us to see with whom he decides to share his heart.” But back to Elizabeth and Lucas, and their happy ending — or was it more of a happy beginning? “Even though Elizabeth’s decision sort of felt like closure, it was really just closure of that triangle. And now we’re getting to see Elizabeth and Lucas explore their new relationship without that complication,” Krakow teases. “And it’s just been really fun for Chris and I to get to play that freedom, explore what their dynamic is like. Fans have noticed that Lucas was never actually inside Elizabeth’s row house at all, that we’ve seen. That’s something new that we’ve been playing with this season — their dynamic at home, his dynamic with little Jack [Gunnar Reid Taylor and Lincoln David Taylor].” Krakow also promises lots of “exciting storylines” for the existing characters, as well as some fresh faces in town. One thing is for sure — Season 9 will deliver everything viewers love about Hope Valley, whether or not their favorite characters ended up together. — Taylor Neumann Premieres on Hallmark Channel Sundays beginning March 6 14

THE THING ABOUT PAM

The Thing About Pam: © 2021 NBCUniversal, LLC. Credit: Frank Ockenfels 3/NBC

NEW SERIES!

Oscar winner Renée Zellweger makes her broadcast TV debut as star and executive producer of this series that marks the first project between Blumhouse Television and NBC News Studios following their announced partnership in 2020. The hourlong, sixepisode true-crime drama is based on an actual murder case that became one of the most popular topics ever on NBC’s Dateline when it was featured in several episodes. The real-life events and personalities were also the subjects of the still-highly downloaded 2019

Dateline podcast The Thing About Pam. NBC says this series will bring “a completely new perspective” as it details the 2011 murder of Betsy Faria (Katy Mixon), which resulted in the conviction of her husband, Russ (Glenn Fleshler). Russ insisted that he did not kill Betsy, and his conviction was later overturned, but this brutal crime set off a chain of events that would expose a diabolical scheme deeply involving a woman named Pam Hupp, portrayed by Zellweger. Josh Duhamel and Judy Greer also star. Premieres on NBC Tuesdays beginning March 8

SOMEONE THEY KNEW… WITH TAMRON HALL

NEW SERIES!

Journalist and author Tamron Hall hosts this weekly true-crime series that follows the path from victim to verdict to explore how, when it comes to murder, it is rare for there to be no prior connection between the killer and the deceased. The stories are told from the point of view of the people impacted by the case, including the lawyers, jurors, members of law enforcement, and the victim’s family and friends, using new interviews, archival footage and re-creations of the crime. The series looks to stand out in the crowded true crime field by nixing voice-overs, reporters and correspondents to keep the focus on the victims and their loved ones. Premieres on Court TV Sundays beginning March 6 15

WHAT’S NEW SURVIVOR

MR. MAYOR SEASON PREMIERE!

In the sitcom’s second term, L.A. Mayor Neil Bremer (Ted Danson) faces the power of the angry people after he hires outside help to modernize the way the city is run. “As you can imagine, that causes tension with the staff,” says cocreator and exec producer Tina Fey. Later, a testy influencer (Josie Totah) rallies her followers to mount a recall petition. Plus, Danson’s wife Mary Steenburgen guest-stars (Fran Drescher, too!) when the widower reenters the dating pool. Premieres on NBC Tuesdays beginning March 15 16

It’s Season 42, fans, and the competition series that tasks players to outwit, outplay and outlast just keeps getting better. Big kudos to host and executive producer Jeff Probst, who got the show back in motion after COVID shutdowns. Probst never left Fiji after Season 41; in fact, three days after the finale, he began shooting Season 42. “It was definitely a long shoot and very tough on the crew, but that’s what separates the Survivor team from most other teams. We adapt and figure it out,” Probst tells us. “It also created some interesting opportunities for us to shake up the game a bit! We started by reducing the number of days from 39 to 26. Then, to offset the shorter duration, we pumped the difficulty up to 11! It created a faster, more physically demanding and much more dangerous version of Survivor.” Probst reminds us that the players for the new season never saw last season, so they have no idea how fast-paced the game has become. While some of the twists in the new season will be similar to the last — like the funny phrases, only 26 days, no rice and limited supplies — there will be some twists that are brand new. “It’s a wickedly difficult game to play and that’s by design,” Probst says. “You have to remember, the game is not there to trick the players, the game is there to test the players. How will you adapt to this new curveball coming at you?” As for new players to watch, Probst wasn’t giving anything away, but did say players “seem to have a more healthy sense of fun in terms of how they approach the game. There is a joy and a lightness, even when they are brutally betraying each other. I believe that is directly related to COVID and the reminder we all received, that life is short — so let’s have fun.” And that we will, we’re sure of it. Plus, he promised another All-Star season will be in the future! — Barb Oates Premieres on CBS Wednesdays beginning March 9
