“ BARBIE”
& “OPPENHEIMER”
CLASH AGAIN AT THE 96TH OSCARS
After the dust settled following last summer’s “Barbenheimer” battle between the hotly anticipated feature films Barbie and Oppenheimer, Barbie won the box office by a large margin, and in fact was the highest-grossing movie of 2023.
But when it comes to this year’s Oscar nominations, Oppenheimer is on top, leading the field with 13, including Best Picture, Best Director (Christopher Nolan) and Best Actor (Cillian Murphy). Barbie has a very respectable eight nominations, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling) and Best Original Song (“I’m Just Ken” and “What Was I Made For?”), but noticeably absent among its nods are Barbie herself, star Margot Robbie, and director Greta Gerwig (who does
share a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination with Noah Baumbach).
Just behind Oppenheimer are Poor Things, with 11 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress (Emma Stone), and Killers of the Flower Moon, with 10, including Best Picture and Best Director (Martin Scorsese).
We’ll find out who wins these and all the other categories when the 96th Oscars airs the evening of Sunday, March 10. ABC will again broadcast the ceremony live; Jimmy Kimmel returns for his fourth stint as host.

Giancarlo Esposito
1 PARISH
Sundays beginning March 31 on AMC NEW SERIES!
TV fans will forever be indebted to Giancarlo Esposito for creating one of the most unassuming, chilling villains in TV history for his role as Gus Fring on Breaking Bad and its prequel Better Call Saul, both ratings juggernauts for AMC. His latest role has been an eight-year journey in the making where he returns to AMC as another memorable character, this time as Gracian “Gray” Parish in the highoctane crime thriller Parish.
The six-episode series is based on the U.K. series The Driver and tells the story of an everyman who, after his son is violently murdered, encounters an old friend (Skeet Ulrich) and returns to old habits from his past criminal life.
THE TOP
15 A QUICK RUNDOWN OF WHAT TO WATCH THIS MONTH
“The original show The Driver by Danny Brocklehurst was very moving to me, but I wanted to create something a little more soulful,” Esposito tells. “I was driven and guided by a lot of my own personal reflection on my life, and I knew that I wanted to make a
PARISH
show about an everyman who was faced with incredible possibilities that just weren’t working out. Dream deferred, someone who was just busted and broken, and that everyman who has to somehow rise to become an extraordinary man. So, from my particular background, having a marriage that failed, four beautiful daughters and not being able to provide for them and going bankrupt was all kind of the fodder for my thoughts and feelings surrounding, infusing Parish with that kind of predicament, dilemma and heartbreaking situation.”
You absolutely feel for Parish — the heartbreak he endures with losing a child, the frustrations of trying to keep your business afloat amid industry change, and the commitment to provide for your family both emotionally and financially when nothing is going your way. Your stomach also turns, and you cringe over some of the decisions he makes. Here Esposito shares more on the riveting drama set and filmed in New Orleans.
On eight years in the making:
“It got good through the struggle of it. It got good through the sweat and blood of it. It got good through me respecting that a network who I’ve worked with, who loves me and respects me, and thinks I’m the cat’s meow, have them understand
that I respected their investment in this. I wanted to tell the story of an everyman walking down the street. Now this guy’s a little bit different because he had certain means that he loses, but it’s the same story of what could have been.”
On those choices his character makes: “I think it’s in line with what people need right now. I’m tired of being a passenger in my own life. That’s strong stuff. That means you got to stand up and change it and make it different. Now for Gracian Parish, he took the gig and then he saw behind the veil and then he went, ‘Oh, oops. What did I do? Uh-oh.’ And I love this story for those reasons. He’s got to fight his way out and it may take a long time and he’s got to do some things that might be, more than likely will be, reprehensible for him to get out.”
On believing intentions are everything: “What I, like, love about Gracian Parish is he makes mistakes and people do make mistakes. We’re bound to, but can we live with ourselves and those mistakes, and, more importantly, make the correction? Can we make the correction? That’s important.”
On his costar Bradley Whitford being friend or foe: “I have to say it’s tricky and intricate, and it’s something that we came upon
that I thought was really important because it’s the skeleton and the ghosts of the past. It’s something that drives the wedge in between Gray and his wife [Ray Donovan’s Paula Malcomson] and child [mixedish’s Arica Himmel] because they had no clue.”
On his old buddy Bryan Cranston: “I adore Bryan Cranston and I’ve been recently in touch on a number of different levels with him.
… I had dinner with him because he was down in New Orleans shooting Your Honor. And it turns out that my stunt coordinator, Andy, was his stunt double on Your Honor and coordinator. So not only did he share a bunch of places to eat with me, but we also shared Andy, who turned out to be just an incredible stuntman.”
And speaking of those insane driving scenes: “We have narrow corridors of streets in the French Quarter … I had to do backwards, reverse 360, I had to slide the car, stop the car, break the car on a dime with people around me in the street.
… That’s all me in the Porsche Macan and the Cadillac. It takes a lot of focus and attention — you have to be really clear to do that kind of work because you’re going at a certain rate of speed that it’s important to know what you’re doing as anything can happen.” — Barb
Oates2 HUNTING HOUSEWIVES
Saturday, March 9 on LIFETIME
ORIGINAL FILM!
A group of uber-pampered housewives take off for a muchanticipated spa weekend — no kids, no husbands, no schedule, just looking forward to plenty of drinks and relaxation — but instead find themselves stranded in the woods. With no basic survival skills, the housewives are left to use their wits (and whatever is in their designer bags) to survive the rugged wilds. When they realize they are not alone, the ladies must align to outwit their hunters.
No stranger to playing Real Housewives, NeNe Leakes (The Real Housewives of Atlanta) and Denise Richards (The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills) lead the cast along with Kym Johnson Herjavec and Melyssa Ford. Herjavec is best known for Dancing With the Stars and her 2016 marriage to Shark Tank’s Robert Herjavec. Ford, who got her start as a music video model in the ’90s, and then survived a traumatic brain injury, is best known now for her podcasting.
Here a few of the ladies answer our questions on the film and survival.
What originally makes your character so unqualified to survive?
Denise Richards: I think there is a perception of our characters that we are high maintenance and aren’t self-sufficient. But we are strong women, and the audience will see what we are made of!
Kym Johnson Herjavec:
[My character] Joli likes the finer things in life, shall we say! She is not much of an outdoor kind of woman! The Four Seasons is more for her than the forest. I could kind of relate to Joli, as I did Celebrity Survivor in Australia and only lasted three days!
In the Real Housewives world, who does your character most align with (or describe her diva-ish behavior if she has one)?
Richards: Myself! [My character] Karla stayed strong!
Herjavec: I think she is a little Luann because of her fun sense of humor, but she is a bit like
Dorit, as she has a princess side to her!
What is something you (not your character) carry in your handbag that would help you out in a survival situation?
Richards: Nothing, but I should! Herjavec: ChapStick! No one likes chapped lips.
If you were truly stuck in the woods, what types of things would you excel at when it comes to survival?
Richards: I think I would excel at keeping everyone calm and being resourceful in finding
things we need. I also think I would be good at starting a fire, as I have started many in a wood burning fireplace and it’s not as easy as it looks.
Herjavec: Before I did Celebrity Survivor, I went to the local Boy Scouts meeting to learn to tie knots and make a lean-to for shelter! I was actually good at that!

THE REGIME
Sundays beginning March 3 on HBO NEW SERIES!
Kate Winslet has inhabited one fascinating character after another, a successful run that continues in this six-episode limited series from Succession scribe Will Tracy. As fierce Elena Vernham, she’s the chancellor of an (unnamed) Central European country in turmoil. Tune in to see …
A MASTERFUL PERFORMANCE Tracy credits Winslet with shaping her formidable character. “Kate knew [Elena] would need to be not only hugely charismatic but also somehow bizarrely ‘off,’” he says. “Kate captures that beautifully.” We also can’t wait to see turns from Hugh Grant and Martha Plimpton.
DRAMATIC MARITAL MESSINESS As the show tracks a year in Elena’s life, we witness her “seriocomic nightmare” of a marriage to Nicholas (Guillaume Gallienne). Explains Tracy: “They have no children. They are, in a sense, each other’s children.”
SOCIAL COMMENTARY The Regime’s international landscape allows Tracy to “occasionally say something about the world we live in and possible directions it might be heading in.” — Jim Halterman

NOLLY
Sundays beginning March 17 on PBS NEW THREE-PART DRAMA!
“She wasn’t easy, she didn’t suffer fools, so I can see she might have put people’s backs up,” says Helena Bonham Carter of British soap star Noele “Nolly” Gordon, her bold character in this true-life, three-part drama from Russell T Davies (Doctor Who). It takes place around the tumultuous time that Gordon, who played red-haired widow Meg Richardson on the long-running Crossroads from 1964 to 1981, was fired with no explanation at the height of the show’s success and her own fame. The actress’ response? The night her last episode aired, she appeared on a talk show for an unflinching interview. Says Bonham Carter, “I hope it inspires the Nolly within all of us — somebody who won’t go quietly.” — Kate Hahn

QUEENS
Mondays beginning March 4 on NAT GEO NEW SERIES!
All hail the queens! Oscarnominated actress Angela Bassett narrates this exciting new sevenpart documentary series focused on female leaders among the animal kingdoms. All told from a female perspective, and helmed by a female-led production team, Queens highlights the sacrifices and challenges various matriarchs of different species must endure for the survival of their families, as well as their resilience, intelligence
and ability to love those around them. “In Queens, females drive the story,” shares Vanessa Berlowitz, an executive producer.
“The most accomplished women in the industry get behind the camera to turn things on their heads, revealing surprising insights into how females rise to power, often relying on cooperation and wisdom over brute strength to get ahead.”
The sisterhoods of six distinct animal communities — hyenas,
elephants, ring-tailed lemurs, insects, primates and killer whales — are shared. Using cutting-edge technology to film close-ups of various female-led tribes — every episode focuses on a different area of the world, from the deserts of Africa to the middle of the rainforest — the series will give nature-hungry viewers a realistic and personal look into the daily life of nature’s “queens.”

PHOTOGRAPHER
Mondays beginning March 18 on NAT GEO NEW SERIES!
This stunning new docuseries takes nature lovers on a journey with some of the most renowned and iconic photographers as they document the world’s most beautiful scenes, people and animals, while including their own personal backstories and how they first fell in love with photography. Through interviews and footage of their current photographic missions, such as capturing sea life in the Bahamas or snapping portraits of children at refugee camps, viewers will gain a deeper understanding of what it takes to succeed in this inspiring profession.
“A lot of people have already given up. Why care if everything is doomed?” says Cristina Mittermeier, one half of the photographer duo featured in the episode titled “Win or Die,” who met in the National Geographic cafeteria and have been together ever since. “We still live in a beautiful planet. I want to be an ambassador for nature. For all of us. Our hope is to take this boat around the world and tell the stories that need to be told everywhere.”
But the job has its downsides too, such as occasionally being alone and defenseless among wild animals. “I was very close to being killed by an 8,000pound breeding elephant seal. I hadn’t realized he was breeding all day, and I swam up to him to take his picture and he turned on me,” said Paul Nicklen, the other half of the photographic power couple.
“He has a very different threshold for fear than I do,” Mittermeier added. “So, he is able to tolerate more risk than I am.”
As the saying goes, though: no risk, no reward! For those of us who would rather watch sharks from the comfort of our own living rooms, this show will not disappoint. — Zhanna Slor

LAST CHANCE GARAGE
Wednesdays beginning March 20 on MOTORTREND NEW SERIES!
Cars have been at the center of Tony D’Antonio’s life since he was a kid. The Philadelphia-raised mechanic and car restoration expert was a sponge as a child soaking up everything from his father, who ran an automotive repair shop, and his grandfather, who was into restoring cars.
“I was really little when my grandfather restored a 1930 Model A, but my grandfather drove everywhere in that 1930 Model A and he took me with him,” Tony shares. His grandfather passed away when Tony was just 17, but that passion his grandfather sparked lives on today. Now Tony owns D’Antonio Automotive, and his garage and staff are the subjects of the new series Last Chance Garage, where Tony and his crew take viewers through botched restoration jobs (showing all the nitty-gritty details on these sloppy jobs) and the unique stories behind each car and owner as they transform the vehicle to its intended state.
“People come to me to have their vehicle rebuilt — to chase the memories, the best moments of their lives. I’m helping them relive the happiest moments of their lives through a vehicle,” Tony says. The show is basically Botched for cars. “[Like the plastic surgery series,] we go in and make sure that everything works perfectly, the way it should have worked the first time. It’s just sad to know that I was able to build a show and business almost entirely based on fixing botched cars. Insanity.”
In between a lot of underbody car rot and the technicalities on getting things fixed is a fun chemistry among the crew. Tony’s father is also a big part of the show but don’t expect any type of explosive fighting between these two (a la American Chopper). “I’m not going to fight my dad on camera. That’s just not going to happen. That’s not what we do,” Tony adds. “I’m 34 and my dad will still kick my butt. What you guys see on camera is exactly who we are.” — Barb Oates

In addition to the Clenney case, for which Clenney is currently in prison awaiting trial, it also covers fellow femmes fatales Lauren Wambles, an adult film actress who ended up involved in drug trafficking, and exotic dancer and escort Crystal Mangum, who rose to infamy after making false accusations against the men’s lacrosse team at Duke, as well as victims Marjorie Lee Thoreson, a young runaway, and Kimberly Pandelios, an aspiring model who disappeared after a photo shoot.
Tony D’Antonio10 GREY’S ANATOMY
Thursdays beginning March 14 on ABC SEASON PREMIERE!
Following some epic cliffhangers and a long wait for answers, one of the longest-running modern series on television, centering around the personal and professional lives of the medical staff of Seattle’s Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, returns with a new season this spring — its 20th. So what can we expect with this momentous season of the medical procedural? Well, all we can say is: Be ready for more drama.
“It was so dramatic with what was happening with the interns and what was happening with Teddy, and I think that the writers have done such a great job at really engaging with the giant cliffhanger and kind of playing with that,” says Kim Raver, who plays Dr. Teddy Altman. “There’s some great stuff there. I can’t tell you who might be coming back this season, but it’s exciting.”
Raver, who has been playing the cardiothoracic surgeon on and off since 2009, loves the progression of her character over the last 14 seasons and is excited for more. “What’s so great about doing episodic television is playing Teddy, over so many years, is this incredible peeling back of the layers of an onion that’s just sort of surprising each time,” Raver adds. “She just feels like such a fuller human being right now, especially her coming into being chief.”
Whatever is in store for Dr. Altman and the rest of the staff of Grey Sloan Memorial, fans will surely be happy to have it back on air after the last shocking finale, which aired back in May and showed Dr. Altman passed out on the floor and being resuscitated by husband Dr. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd).

SPERMWORLD
Friday, March 29 on FX
There is a national sperm shortage. The demand for donated sperm has increased, while the number of men willing to become donors has not. The often prohibitive cost of fertility services and commercial sperm banks has led to an online marketplace that cuts out the middle man. Inspired by journalist Nellie Bowles’ article in The New York Times, director Lance Oppenheim’s featurelength documentary Spermworld explores what he calls an “online, unregulated sperm universe” often involving “strangers meeting to produce life in lonely places: strip malls at night, empty parking lots.” While that might sound seedy, the film reveals how attitudes about parenthood, family and human connection have evolved in an increasingly alienating society. “I wanted to make a film that touched on modern loneliness and the quest to solve that feeling through the internet, altruism and reproduction,” Oppenheim says. — Ryan A. Berenz
14 THE CLEANING LADY
Tuesdays beginning March 5 on FOX SEASON PREMIERE!
The drama following Thony De La Rosa (Élodie Yung), a doctor who comes to the U.S. in search of advanced medical treatment for her son and ends up involved in the Las Vegas criminal underground, returns for Season 3. Kate del Castillo joins the cast as Ramona Sanchez, a philanthropist and art collector whose grace and elegance hide her ruthlessness. Playing Ramona’s brother Jorge is new series regular Santiago Cabrera. Harvard Law-educated Jorge has turned his legitimate business success into a massive money laundering operation, and he’s known for making his family’s problems disappear. Clayton Cardenas (Mayans M.C.) plays top lieutenant Dante, who is fiercely protective of Ramona and her interests. Sadly, actor Adan Canto, who starred as gangster Arman Morales in the first two seasons, died from cancer in January at age 42. He was not involved in Season 3 production due to his health. — Ryan A.
