Four-Part Series Links Past Pandemics To Modern Medicine. By Meredith Ennis

Filmed during the current COVID-19 pandemic, PBS’ Extra Life: A Short History of Living Longer (Tuesdays beginning May 11) is a timely series that examines some of the lessons that were learned during previous pandemics (including smallpox, cholera and Spanish flu) that have helped us live longer, healthier lives. The doctors, scientists, activists and others on the front lines of these health crises are the unsung heroes of many of the innovations that are standard practice in modern medicine today.

Over four episodes, bestselling author Steven Johnson and historian and broadcaster David Olusoga examine 300 years of science and innovation that have conquered disease and saved millions of lives. They highlight the scientific breakthroughs and collective efforts of individuals around the world and across varied disciplines that have resulted in extraordinary health outcomes, including a doubling of the human lifespan in less than 100 years — one of the greatest scientific achievements in human history.

Showtime has cast its starring roles in its upcoming series The Man Who Fell to Earth, which was originally meant to air on Paramount+ but has since moved to the cable network. Chiwetel Ejiofor leads as an alien who comes to Earth at an important point in human evolution. The series is based off of the Walter Tevis novel of the same name and the 1976 film that famously starred David Bowie.

ABC PILOT Jane Lynch has joined the ABC pilot Bucktown in one of the lead roles. The series follows Amy, played by Shannon Woodward, who, after breaking up with her boyfriend and being kicked out of her apartment, moves in with her mother in the neighborhood where she grew up. Lynch will play the mother, Helen.

PSYCHIC COMEDY Rebecca Rittenhouse has been chosen to play the title role in ABC’s comedy pilot Maggie, following a young woman dealing with the troubles in her life while also coming to terms with her powers as a psychic. She can see the future, but it’s not helping her with her present.

The Story Of Late Night There may never be another Johnny Carson to dominate the field, but as this brisk and blissfully clip-heavy survey of the evolution of late-night TV reminds us, there will always be a place for after-hours conversation and comedy. Airing over six Sundays (barring breaking news), CNN’s The Story of Late Night traces a trajectory that began with the slapstick anarchy of Steve Allen on the embryonic Tonight Show (the inspiration for David Letterman’s wacky antics decades later) and matured with the prickly intelligence of erudite successor Jack Paar. Carson’s 30-year reign (1962-92) of show-business savvy set the standard during an earlier period of national tumult — one that gave rise to the satirical free-for-all of Lorne Michaels’ groundbreaking Saturday Night Live. More than a mere nostalgia romp, the series acknowledges the difficulty women and performers of color have had finding and sustaining a place behind the late-night desks. Famous feuds (Leno vs. Letterman, Leno vs. Conan) reveal how much drama lurks within these lucrative laugh factories. And today’s practitioners walk a more precarious tightrope of humor in politically polarized times. Even so, going to bed without them is unthinkable. — Matt Roush 4

CNN’s Six-Part Documentary Explores Carson, Letterman, Leno And More.

Episode Guide

“Inventing Late Night” (Sunday, May 2)

As the 1980s dawn, David Letterman reinvents late-night comedy for a new generation, rescuing comedian Jay Leno’s nearly flamed-out career in the process. But Johnny Carson’s enduring comic appeal spawns endless speculation over his eventual successor: Will it be Leno, Letterman, Joan Rivers or upstart Arsenio Hall?

“Carson: King of Late Night” (Sunday, May 9)

“Letterman v. Leno” (Sunday, May 23)

At the dawn of the TV era in the 1950s, Steve Allen’s zany spontaneity turns Tonight into a hilarious and unexpected hit. But in the early 1960s, it’s Jack Paar’s captivating, quirky personality and Johnny Carson’s impeccably hip humor that transform late night from a shot in the dark into an enduring television staple.

As the 2000s unfold, Jay Leno’s monologue mastery captivates mainstream America. But his succession struggle with heirapparent Conan O’Brien is no joke, making waves across the late-night landscape and bringing Jimmy Fallon’s fresh voice to the front. Thanks to cable’s rise, diverse voices like Chelsea Handler, Andy Cohen and George Lopez get their seat behind the late-night desk, while Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert take the news into their own hilarious hands.

“Eyes on the Throne” (Sunday, May 16)

“Late Night Makes the News” (Sunday, May 30)

Johnny Carson deftly navigates the turbulent 1960s to elevate The Tonight Show into a cultural touchstone, enshrining himself as the undisputed king of late night. But his success begets competition with the emergence of Dick Cavett, Merv Griffin, Saturday Night Live and a former Indiana weatherman by the name of David Letterman.

Carson’s 1992 retirement touches a nation — and touches off an epic late-night war between Jay Leno and David Letterman. But it’s network newcomers Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Kimmel — and the comic inspirations of cable upstart Jon Stewart — that introduce hilarious new comedy perspectives that could change late night’s sense of humor forever. Air dates subject to change with any breaking news.

“Reinventing Late Night” (Sunday, June 6)

Jimmy Fallon takes over for Jay Leno. Stephen Colbert inherits David Letterman’s desk. Trevor Noah becomes a surprise pick for Jon Stewart’s replacement. Plus, new hosts James Corden, Seth Meyers, Amber Ruffin, Desus & Mero and Samantha Bee join the late-night TV ranks. 5

SERIES & SEASON FINALES

MOM

Series finale: May 13 Total run: Eight seasons, 170 episodes How it started: Newly sober single mom Christy (Anna Faris) tries to pull her life together by reuniting with her mother, Bonnie (Allison Janney), in Napa Valley. Signature episode: “Terrorists and Gingerbread,” Season 3, Episode 1: Bonnie and Christy disagree about forgiveness when Bonnie’s estranged mom wants to be a part of their lives. Awards: Primetime Emmy Awards 2014-15, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (Janney) Notable guest stars: Yvette Nicole Brown, Ellen Burstyn, Kristin Chenoweth, Beverly D’Angelo, Patti LuPone, Joe Manganiello, Emily Osment, Kevin Pollak, Richard Schiff, Octavia Spencer, June Squibb, French Stewart, Kathleen Turner, Steven Weber, Bradley Whitford, Rainn Wilson How will it end? Janney wishes Mom had more time for a bigger ramp-up to the finale, but at least the series will go out on its own terms. Bringing Faris back for a guest appearance would give a proper send-off for Christy, but that path might be too worn for a show that has continually shunned expectations.

NCIS: NEW ORLEANS

Series finale: May 23 Total run: Seven seasons, 155 episodes How it started: Special Agent Dwayne Pride (Scott Bakula) heads up the NCIS field office investigating criminal cases involving military personnel in New Orleans. Signature episode: “Matthew 5:9,” Season 6, Episode 6: Special Agent Christopher LaSalle (original cast member and fan favorite Lucas Black) meets his fate while searching for the drug ring responsible for his brother’s murder. Notable guest stars: Tom Arnold, LeVar Burton, Mark Harmon, Kelly Hu, Mario Lopez, Wendie Malick, Pauley Perrette, Annie Potts, Wilmer Valderrama, Steven Weber How will it end? The end of one NCIS might mark the beginning of another. NCIS: Hawaii is in the works, and it would be shocking if the door wasn’t left open for NOLA characters to make future trips to the Aloha State. 6

HOUSEBROKEN

I

Housebroken: Lisa Kudrow: © 2021 Fox Media LLC. Cedit: FOX

Housebroken: © 2021 by Kapital Entertainment and Fox Media LLC.

t’s like The Secret Life of Pets if all the pets were neurotic. Housebroken, the latest addition to FOX’s stable of animated comedies, comes from writers/executive producers Clea DuVall, Jennifer Crittenden and Gabrielle Allan, and features Lisa Kudrow, Nat Faxon, Tony Hale and Will Forte leading an all-star ensemble voice cast. Honey (Kudrow) is a standard poodle who leads group therapy sessions for the neighborhood’s pets and stray animals to work out their issues with their owners and each other. Meanwhile, Honey’s arranged marriage to a big, fun-loving, oafish Saint Bernard named Chief (Faxon) often leaves her feeling unfilled. Kudrow let us in on what it’s like playing canine counselor to a crew of complicated companion animals:

What was it like working with the cast and recording the voices during the pandemic? Lisa Kudrow: We started I think before COVID, and then we were doing table reads and scratch recordings virtually during lockdown. And when it was safe, I’d go into a studio. I got to record a lot with Nat Faxon. That was so great. He is so funny. Well, no kidding — that’s not exactly like big breaking news. It was just so funny, his laughing as Chief. I don’t know how many things I ruined just because I was laughing. It was hard not to. It was so

funny at the table reads just to hear everyone. It’s really fun. Clea, Jen and Gabby, who created the show, are so great. One or all were there every session. They’re just so open to, “Oh, yeah, let’s try that. Let’s try that.” You’re allowed to pitch things. And they really also just helped me find Honey. DuVall’s relationship with her cat was the springboard for Housebroken. Do you have any pets of your own? Yeah, I have a little dog. She loves me. What more does a pet owner want out of their animal? I’m loved. She’s a Maltese mix. She’s really great. We just sort of attribute human behaviors and thoughts to our animals and read into every expression as if it’s our own. It all makes sense the way they depict these animals. And then there are little misinterpretations of their humans’ behavior, which was really funny to me.

Lisa Kudrow On Her Sweet Role As Honey In FOX’s New Animated Sitcom. By Ryan A. Berenz is obviously analytical and she thinks of herself as a therapist because her human is a therapist. Honey really just wants to talk, and Chief is really not interested. But he’s so sweet. Of course she has to like him. What’s not to like? He’s just so lovable. I think because she’s so analytical, she thinks, “I don’t know if this is the right match.” And you don’t have to think too much about things. So it almost feels like that’s Honey’s journey in all of this. Premieres on FOX Monday, May 31

Honey and Chief have an arranged marriage, and they’re kind of a mismatch. What’s their relationship like? They’re just total opposites. Chief is just full of energy, everything is just for fun and he has a coarse sense of humor. Honey 7
