As Sons of Anarchy spinoff Mayans M.C. keeps on cruising through Season 4 Tuesdays on FX, Angel Reyes (Clayton Cardenas) finds his heart pulled in every direction. He’s confronted with a life-altering choice: Does he follow his brother, EZ (JD Pardo), and the Mayans down a path that could lead to ruin, or does he leave the club to make his own life as a devoted husband and father? “I think as he watches his brother get fully immersed into the club and sees how the consequences of his actions are tearing his life apart, I think Angel will start to say, ‘OK, this is not for me anymore. If my brother’s going to make the decision to stay in this life, I have to make a decision for myself to get out.’” Angel’s also trying to build a new life with Nails (Justina Adorno) and the child they’re having together. “He’s moving into this season with the belief that him and Nails are going to have this baby and hopefully this new life that he never had,” Cardenas says. “I think it’s an opportunity to find life outside of the club.” Cardenas became the latest member of our “5 Questions” club:

QUESTIONS

WITH CLAYTON CARDENAS OF FX’S “MAYANS M.C.” By Ryan A. Berenz

Can you tell us about a time you were starstruck? The first time I was starstruck, I was 13 and had just seen Shaquille O’Neal for the first time in person. I nervously walked up to him with a notepad hoping to get an autograph. He surprisingly signed every piece of paper in that notepad and told me to hand them out to my friends. What’s a movie that you can watch over and over again? The one movie I can watch over and over is Forrest Gump. For so many different reasons, I think we would need an extra article. What’s your favorite sports team? I can’t pick one. I’m an L.A. kid, so Dodgers, Lakers and Raiders. What’s a job you had before showbiz?

The one job I had before acting was being a waiter. Be sure to tip well! 2

What’s been your strangest or most interesting fan encounter? My strangest interaction with a fan happened in Rhode Island. She asked me to autograph her body and said she wanted to go get it as a tattoo. I thought she was joking, but she showed up 45 minutes later to show the tattoo off to me. I will never doubt any fan again.

The annual National Memorial Day Concert, now in its 33rd year and traditionally one of PBS’ highest-rated programs, returns to the network for its 2022 installment on Sunday, May 29, in a live broadcast. The concert is usually held on the west lawn of the United States Capitol and features uplifting musical performances, documentary footage, and dramatic readings and reallife stories to honor the service and sacrifice of men and women in uniform, their families at home, and all who have given their lives for our country. This year’s hosts and performers had not been confirmed at presstime, but the gathering usually features celebrities, musicians, and distinguished veterans and current service members. An encore presentation airs immediately after the live PBS broadcast; the concert will also stream live at pbs.org/national-memorial-dayconcert and be available to watch there for two weeks following the event.

NBC Again Onboard With Billboard On Sunday, May 15, NBC will broadcast the 2022 Billboard Music Awards. This marks the fifth year in a row that the network has televised this ceremony that is unique among music awards shows in that its honorees are determined by performance on the Billboard charts. The nominees and winners are based on key fan interactions with music, including album and digital song sales, streaming, radio airplay, 4

touring and social engagement. Airing live across all time zones from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, this year’s ceremony will again feature performances along with the awards. The Weeknd leads all artists as a finalist in 17 categories. Doja Cat is the leading female finalist with 14 categories, followed closely by first-timer Olivia Rodrigo, a finalist in 13 categories. – Jeff Pfeiffer

After a nearly 20-year run, countless celebrity guests, laughs, tears and insights, The Ellen DeGeneres Show will come to an official end on Thursday, May 26 on NBC (in most markets). “It’s going to be really hard on the last day, but I also know it’s time,” the comedian shared earlier this year. Leading up to her final episode, tons of celebs are expected to drop in to pay tribute and reminisce with the host, including former first lady Michelle Obama, Jennifer Garner, Channing Tatum, Serena Williams, Zac Efron, Adam Levine, David Letterman, Kim Kardashian and more. The show will continue to air repeats and compilation episodes this summer.

Series Finale!

We’ve got less than a month to ready ourselves for the final episode, and we can’t help but get a little teary-eyed just thinking about it. Creator Dan Fogelman has taken us on a beautiful, emotional, exhilarating journey following the Pearson family through their tragedies, heartbreaks and triumphs. The multigenerational story was a poignant reminder on the importance of family, acceptance, forgiveness and just plain decency, anchored by parents Jack and Rebecca (Milo Ventimiglia and Mandy Moore) and their all-consuming love for their “Big Three” triplets — Randall (Sterling K. Brown), Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Kate (Chrissy Metz). Their stories took us down paths and conversations we never imagined, and introduced supporting characters (Beth! William! Toby! Nicky! Déjà!) in whom we became

three years since Season 3, Season 4 picks up six months after the Battle of Starcourt, which brought terror and destruction to Hawkins, Indiana. Struggling with the aftermath, the young heroes are separated for the first time while trying to handle

On Rebecca’s “deathbed” fate in the house Kevin built her. Dan Fogelman: “We’re definitely going to spend more time there. … Typically our flash-forwards into the future, there’s three future areas we’ve been in. One is we’ve seen glimpses of Kate’s second wedding. We then see in that kind of what we call the ‘death house.’ And then we also obviously have our late Jack Jr. in the much even deeper future as a young aspiring musician.” On ending the series. Sterling K. Brown: “To not be able to see [the cast] every day, I’ll miss [them]. I’ll miss the story that we’ve had a chance to tell with one another. And I can’t wait for 20 years to do an E! True Hollywood Story. It’s going to be awesome.” Milo Ventimiglia: “Jack will probably be a part of me for a long time. But at the same time, I get to shave the mustache, shave the beard, get a haircut. I’m looking forward to filming that [last episode]. I think it’s going to be one for the books.” On the idea of a follow-up movie. Justin Hartley: “I am down for a This Is Us movie; I love these cats. I would do a trilogy movie, I really would. I would do a movie every year with these guys.” Mandy Moore: “I would be game to do anything that would reunite me with everybody here.” — Barb Oates Premieres on NBC Tuesday, May 24

the difficulties of high school. During these vulnerable days, a new and terrifying supernatural threat surfaces, presenting a gruesome mystery that, if solved, might finally put an end to the horrors of the Upside Down (but probably not until the fifth and

THE BAD SEED RETURNS Mckenna Grace is one of Hollywood’s most indemand stars, with an Emmy nomination for her work on The Handmaid’s Tale already under her belt — all before being old enough to drive! This month she stars in The Bad Seed Returns, the sequel to her successful 2018 film for Lifetime. Her character, Emma Grossman, is a true psychopath, as depicted in the events of the first film that saw her classmates, babysitter and eventually her father (played by Rob Lowe) die by her machinations. The sequel brings up a new dynamic for Emma as she deals with teenage angst as well as her new household situation, now living with her aunt and uncle along with a baby cousin. A major highlight of the new film is that it was written by Grace herself, along with her father — a surgeon by trade — during quarantine. “We were locked up, like everyone,” explains Grace. “We were really bored and so we were trying to think, ‘What’s a script that we could write?’ … We just got to thinking and we were like, ‘What about The Bad Seed? Wouldn’t that be so interesting?’ I thought it’d be really fun if we just went back to that and came up with our own story.” The character of Emma certainly changes from the first movie to the sequel; in the original, she uses the guise of childlike innocence to hide behind whenever doubt becomes cast against her. In the new film, she’s learning how to adapt to the trials and tribulations of being a teenager — all while “solving problems” the only way she knows how. “She has to try and figure out how to grapple with being in a more teenage social setting and how to make relationships and get to know people [without being] suspicious to them,” teases Grace. The original Bad Seed movie had a pretty high body count — does the sequel compare? Grace laughs. “Oh gosh, wait, hold on. … Let me count on my hand. I don’t know if it’s up to the first film, but it’s definitely up there.” – Taylor Neumann Premieres on Lifetime Monday, May 30 8

THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE

NEW SERIES!

He’s a dashing librarian. She’s a gifted artist. But in this six-episode adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger’s revered novel, the meeting and subsequent love story of Henry DeTamble (Theo James, Sanditon) and Clare Abshire (Rose Leslie, Game of Thrones) is anything but typical. Cursed with a genetic disorder that makes him time-travel unwillingly, Henry often finds himself propelled into the past or future without even the clothes on his back. It’s dangerous, but his one huge chunk of luck is the universe sending him Clare. (She’s actually known Henry since childhood, when his future self was her “imaginary friend.”) The time-travel element is “a prism through which we see a tale of ordinary love. By scrambling it all up, it becomes fresh and joyous and sometimes frightening and tragic,” says exec producer Steven Moffat, a self-proclaimed “massive fan” of the book. Still, this couple’s relationship has a time limit, as fate looms over them. “You need that drumbeat of doom that Audrey’s prose provides,” says Moffat, adding, “I hope I’ve found a way of conveying that visually, right from the first episode. You won’t miss it!” — Linda Maleh Premieres on HBO Sundays beginning May 15

LIONEL RICHIE: THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS GERSHWIN PRIZE FOR POPULAR SONG “When you receive this award, it basically tells me that there’s a moment in time where you have to say, ‘I’ve arrived,’” legendary singer-songwriter Lionel Richie said at a press conference ahead of the ceremony honoring him as this year’s recipient of the Library of Congress’ Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. An understated quote like that shows just how much Richie has stayed true to his simple and humble Tuskegee, Alabama, roots. It’s good that he himself can finally feel that he has “arrived.” Plenty of listeners immediately knew that a remarkable musical talent had come onto the scene over 40 years ago when Richie began his incredible run of writing (and usually also performing) one chart-topping song after another, starting during his days with the Commodores in the late 1970s (with hits like “Easy,” “Still” and “Three Times a Lady”), and continuing into the ’80s when he began his solo career (which has included popular tunes like “Truly,” “Hello,” “All Night Long (All Night)” and “Endless Love,” his duet with Diana Ross) and even with songs he penned for other artists (like the Kenny Rogers-crooned smash “Lady”). Richie has sold more than 125 million albums worldwide, won four Grammys and written eight songs that were No. 1 hits on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. That is certainly a career worth spotlighting with the Gershwin Prize, which annually honors a living musician’s lifetime achievement in entertaining, informing and inspiring cultural understanding through their music. The ceremony bestowing this honor upon Richie was held in March, and was recorded by PBS for broadcast this month. The event featured an all-star concert celebration of Richie’s songs, with highlights including Gloria Estefan kicking off the festivities with her rendition of “Dancing on the Ceiling,” Chris Stapleton performing “Say You, Say Me,” and Richie’s fellow American Idol judge Luke Bryan singing “Lady,” among others. “I would probably never be able to tell you how I got here because I’m so busy just enjoying the ride,” Richie continued in his modest fashion. “I’d love to explain to you where and what and how, but I was inspired. I was divinely guided. And I’m here to this day trying to explain how I got here. But it really is quite a ride.” — Jeff Pfeiffer Premieres on PBS Tuesday, May 17 10

THEODORE ROOSEVELT NEW MINISERIES! In 1912, former president Theodore Roosevelt was in Milwaukee campaigning for a third term in the White House. Running on his Progressive “Bull Moose” Party ticket, Roosevelt was about to deliver a speech when he took a would-be assassin’s bullet to the chest. Undeterred, Roosevelt told the crowd, “I don’t know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot, but it takes more

than that to kill a Bull Moose.” He proceeded to speak for about 80 minutes, and it was not until after he finished that he was convinced to go to a hospital. That toughness is a defining trait of Roosevelt’s life and career in public service, and his policies set the stage for America’s rise as a global superpower in the 20th century. History’s two-night documentary Theodore Roosevelt, based on author and historian Doris Kearns Goodwin’s book Leadership: In Turbulent Times, presents a portrait of a complex man who was a cowboy, soldier,

WHAT’S NEW

I LOVE THAT FOR YOU NEW SERIES!

Oh, what a treat this is! SNL’s uber-smiley Vanessa Bayer is so cringey dorky (yet lovable) as Joanna Gold, a home shopping network superfan who gets the job of her lifetime, in the new eightepisode comedy I Love That for You. Now how she kept the job is the real story. Let’s start by going back to Cleveland 1997, where we meet a teenage Joanna who spent most of her younger years in hospitals battling and eventually overcoming leukemia. Once she licked the disease, she then had to battle that lifelong label of “that cancer girl.” Her luck finally starts to turn when she gets a job at SVN (the Special Value Network she grew up watching) and befriends her childhood idol, SVN’s superstar Jackie Stilton (Molly Shannon). The series is actually inspired by Bayer’s own love affair with home shopping, but more so her story of overcoming childhood leukemia and using humor as a coping mechanism. “I had leukemia when I was 15. I’m fine now,” Bayer shares. “But something that I really discovered — aside from it obviously being very difficult — is that I was able to get a lot of perks from it … like I got to come into school late and there were no consequences. I couldn’t go to homecoming with someone because I was getting chemo 12

that week. I mean, I used it as an excuse all the time.” It’s in that space and the characters surrounding Joanna where the series finds its depth and humor. When Joanna majorly flubs on air and her icy boss Patricia (a brilliant Jenifer Lewis) fires her, she resorts to the only excuse she can think of — telling the entire team she has cancer. That sets into motion an outpouring of attention, fake friendships, extra perks — and problems. There’s a lot of cutthroat competition in this world of egomaniac sellers. In addition to being hilarious, the series is a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how home shopping networks actually work. The real-time metrics and pressures, how hosts create their personas, and how they know how to sell you just about anything is riveting. “Talk about your cancer,” producers pipe into Joanna’s earpiece, and then watch those sales skyrocket. Bayer and cocreator Jeremy Beiler are true fans of home shopping. “After we decided to create this show together, we went on a tour of QVC, and we had such a great time, and I got to meet these hosts that I’ve been watching since I was a kid,” Bayer says. “It’s such an interesting world, it’s such a unique world and we were so enamored by it.” And so are we, as well as by Joanna’s story. Consider us sold! — Barb Oates Premieres on Showtime Sundays beginning May 1

STAR OF THE MONTH: ANNA MAY WONG Actress Wong Liu Tsong, better known as Anna May Wong — a pioneer of Hollywood’s early era and the first Chinese American movie star — will be honored by Turner Classic Movies each Thursday night in May as part of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with lineups featuring a number of her memorable films. The titles primarily include her work in the silent and early sound eras. Those were particularly tough times for Asian American actors in Hollywood, who were often relegated to stereotypical supporting roles and lost out on lead roles entirely due to the practice of “yellowface,” where white actors would portray Asian characters. Despite such hurdles, Wong achieved international stardom, and you can see why with her charismatic presence in films like the silent drama The Toll of the Sea (1922), which featured the actress in her first leading role and kicks off TCM’s Thursday night spotlight on May 5. Other highlights include another silent, Piccadilly (1929), and the sound drama Shanghai Express (1932), costarring Marlene Dietrich, on May 12; Daughter of Shanghai (1937), a crime drama notable for its time by having two Asian American actors (Wong and Philip Ahn) playing its lead characters, on May 19; the war movie Lady From Chungking (1942) and the 1960 thriller Portrait in Black, featuring Wong’s final film appearance, on May 26; and more. Shirley J. Lim, an associate professor in the history department of Stony Brook University and author of the 2019 book Anna May Wong: Performing the Modern, will cohost the titles on May 5 with TCM’s Ben Mankiewicz. — Jeff Pfeiffer Premieres on TCM Thursdays beginning May 5 Piccadilly

GEORGE CARLIN’S AMERICAN DREAM Dubbed “the dean of counterculture comedians,” George Carlin was one of the funniest comics on the planet during a career that spanned fifive decades. This two-part documentary codirected by Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio chronicles Carlin’s rise to fame and opens an intimate window into his personal life. According to Bonfi Bonfiglio, its central focus is Carlin’s evolution as an artist and a human being. It covers his childhood in New York City before working its way up to his numerous comedy specials and appearances on The Tonight Show,, among other career highlights. In addition to intimate interviews with his daughter, Kelly Carlin, there is a treasure trove of never-before-seen archival material including fifilms, photos, audio recordings, letters and diaries. Some of the many funny people interviewed about Carlin include Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Stephen Colbert, Patton Oswalt and Bill Burr. — Paul Doro Premieres on HBO Friday, May 20

THE COLOR OF CARE Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Productions and Smithsonian Channel team up for this documentary special exploring racial inequalities in the American healthcare system, and how the COVID-19 pandemic revealed the tragic consequences of that disparity. Candid interviews with healthcare professionals and people who’ve lost loved ones to the coronavirus reveal the human toll of long-held biases in the availability and quality of medical care for people in nonwhite communities. “As we continued to hear how the racial disparities in our country were exacerbated by the effects of the pandemic, I felt something needed to be done,” Winfrey says. “This film is my way of doing something, with the intention that the stories we share serve as both a warning and foster a deeper understanding of what changes need to take place to better serve us all.” Premieres on Smithsonian Channel Sunday, May 1 13

WHAT’S NEW EXPLORER: THE DEEPEST CAVE

WHO DO YOU BELIEVE?

NEW SERIES!

14

There are two sides to every story, and often they are completely different. ABC explores true-crime cases from dual perspectives, and puts viewers to the task of answering: “Who do you believe?” In some of the cases there’s no telling how far a person would go for their marriage, child or way of life. Every episode culminates by revealing key details from the adjudicated cases. But before you learn the answer, you get to decide! Premieres on ABC Tuesdays beginning May 3

Explorer: The Deepest Cave: Credit: National Geographic/Pablo Durana

This hourlong entry in Nat Geo’s Explorer franchise chronicles the attempt by renowned cave explorer Dr. Bill Stone and his team of 69 elite cavers from around the world to set a new world record by venturing into the bottom of Mexico’s Chevé Cave, thought to be the deepest cave in the world. Their three-month underground journey, the longest active subterranean push duration ever, has been compared to climbing Mount Everest, but in reverse, as the team must navigate through over 12 miles of unexplored tight, twisting passages — sometimes in complete darkness — where one mistake can be deadly. The team’s feat is incredible, as is the filming that captured it; the special’s director, Pablo Durana, and director of photography Kasia Biernacka bring viewers right along into the depths of Chevé, and even if you don’t already have claustrophobia, you’ll likely experience some anxiety as the team proceeds downward into the cramped, dark spaces. Besides offering thrills, the program also captures the close camaraderie that develops among the team members, which would be expected among like-minded people engaged in an exciting yet potentially harrowing undertaking such as this. “The only thing I can think of that might be close to this,” Stone explained at a press conference, “would be either being one of the lunar astronauts or being somebody who has been in a war with a small group of people whom they get to know very well and are under stressful conditions. “Nobody on this team does this for adrenaline. This is not like a lot of other sports. We’re there for the original exploration. … Is there fear? Absolutely. … Having a little bit of [fear] is good, but you have to focus and control to stay alive. … It’s a recognition and a willful suppression of fear that allows you to go forward because of your training, because of your experience.” — Jeff Pfeiffer Premieres on Nat Geo Monday, May 30

NEW SERIES!

A&E’s much-lauded Biography series is back, this time focusing on Grammy Award-winning R&B singer Bobby Brown. The two-night special highlights his struggles with addiction, his first marriage to Whitney Houston and the deaths of two of his children. Despite his personal troubles, Brown achieved much success as a performer, selling over 20 million records worldwide with his group New Edition and later over 12 million records as a solo artist. The documentary special also includes

exclusive interviews with Brown as he tells all about a life lived in the spotlight from a very young age and, for the first time, visits the gravesite of Houston and his daughter Bobbi Kristina. “I started in this business at the age of 14,” Brown says of his beginnings in the industry. “I’m 53 now. So there’s been so much, almost 40 years of entertainment, that I’ve been a part of. … Being able to look back on all of the good times and all of the bad times gave me a sense of comfort. So it was really therapeutic for me.” Following the special is the premiere of a new 12-part docuseries, Bobby Brown: Every Little Step, which will focus on Brown as he embarks back on his music career — a new tour with New Edition — and manages his sobriety while continuing to be a husband and father to his family. The series centers on the lives of this chaotic

but loving group, with Bobby, his wife, Alicia, and their five kids — La’Princia, Landon, Cassius, Hendrix and Bodhi. Viewers may remember Brown as one of the pioneers of the modern reality show with Being Bobby Brown, which aired for one season in 2005 and showed Brown and Houston at the height of their chaotic lifestyle. What makes this new series different? “I’m older. I’m more mature. I’m definitely a lot wiser. … I hope [the audience] will take away the fact that I’ve gone through the rough patches and I’m living my life in a clean and honest way. It’s all real.” – Taylor Neumann Biography: Bobby Brown premieres on A&E May 30-31 Bobby Brown: Every Little Step premieres on A&E Tuesdays beginning May 31

WELCOME HOME NIKKI GLASER? NEW SERIES!

When the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, comedian, podcaster and roastmaster Nikki Glaser made the difficult choice to take a break from the Hollywood scene and move back to her hometown of St. Louis to be with her parents. Camera crews followed Glaser to capture all her embarrassment and merriment for the E! comedy/reality series Welcome Home Nikki Glaser? While she struggled to keep her career going from afar and maintain some kind of a love life, Glaser also got her family in on the act. She helped her dad serenade residents of a retirement community, and had her parents be the house band when she was guest host of Jimmy Kimmel Live! “I am so deeply honored to be on this network that really introduced me to some of my biggest comedic influences: Chelsea Handler, Joel McHale, the ‘before’ faces on Botched,” Glaser says. “I now join the pantheon of famous families, meme-able moments and red carpet celebrations that E! has brought us year after year. And honestly, I couldn’t be prouder.”
