Ghostober!

Travel Channel has pretty much turned itself into a fulltime paranormal programming channel, offering plenty of series and specials about ghosts, monsters, UFOs and other eerie phenomena. Now that Travel is all ghosts, all the time, having a standalone month called “Ghostober” may not necessarily be a unique departure for the network, but it does continue a tradition that has been going on for years now and is nice continued branding during this spookiest of months. So, this year, once again, throughout October — er, we mean Ghostober — you can enjoy a number of new specials and premiere episodes of scary series airing practically every day on Travel. Among the tricks and treats to expect during Ghostober will be the premiere of a new series called World’s Most Unexplained (Oct. 4); a new, two-hour Shock Docs special called This Is Halloween (Oct. 28), in which various Travel Channel hosts share their memories of Halloween and why they love the holiday so much; another special called Mysteries of Halloween (Oct. 28); a new Portals to Hell special (Oct. 30); a new The Osbournes: Night of Terror special (Oct. 30); and new episodes of series like Ghost Nation, The Holzer Files and Destination Fear.

The Classic Show Is Back And Better Than Ever

There’s a good chance that you have fond memories attached to the show Supermarket Sweep — maybe you watched it at home sick as a kid, or found it on a weekend browsing the channels years ago. What you may not know is that the show actually premiered in 1965! It aired for two years before being revived decades later in the ’90s and early ’00s on Lifetime and PAX. Now it’s back again, this time on primetime. The rules of the show are simple. “The show allows three teams of two to come into a dream supermarket, one of the most beautiful supermarkets I’ve ever seen, answer a lot of trivia questions to build up time that they’re going to then use to race through the supermarket, putting as much stuff as they can in their cart,” explained executive producer Wes Kauble. “Whoever has the highest cart total is then going to get to race through the supermarket one more time in a scavenger hunt with their partner for a chance to win a ton of money.” The new iteration of the show is hosted by comedian Leslie Jones, who many know from her memorable run on Saturday Night

Live. What you may not know, however, is that Jones is a superfan of Supermarket Sweep and was instrumental in bringing the show to being. “The love is palpable — every pore of her body exudes the fact that she loves that show,” said executive producer Alycia Rossiter. “[What] makes her really stand out is along [with] that infectious energy, she lives and dies on the success of each contestant,” added Kauble. “You can see her feel the pain when something doesn’t go well. And you can see the over-the-top elation when our contestants succeed.” But more than anything else, the show is a candy-coated romp through a place most of us visit on a weekly basis. “What it really is to me is a fantasy ride through the supermarket. … You’re allowed to run as fast as you can and grab as much stuff as you can, from all of the highest shelves, the lowest shelves, the frozen food section, every part of the supermarket. And it doesn’t matter whether you can afford or can’t afford to have four carts full,” said Rossiter. “It’s a fantasy of kind of breaking the rules and just doing what you want.” Premieres on ABC Sunday, Oct. 18

Soulmates In The Future, You Can Meet Your Perfect Match. (Results May Vary.)

f a simple, scientifically proven test could definitively determine your soulmate — that one person you’re cosmically connected to — would you take it? And if you took the test, how would the result change your life? Those questions are at the core of AMC’s six-part speculative sci-fi drama Soulmates, which tells stories of characters who’ve been profoundly affected by the breakthrough discovery of the human “soul particle” in 2023. Fifteen years in the future, the Soul Connex company offers customers the chance to find their soulmate. (Think of it as an internet dating service that is irrefutably accurate.) The science is perfect, but its real-world application isn’t. There’s no guarantee that their soulmate has also taken the test. There’s no guarantee that their soulmate is the person to whom they’re already married. There’s no guarantee they’ll like their soulmate’s family or friends. There’s no guarantee that their 6

soulmate is even still alive. “I always saw it as a world — if you were looking in the big, big, big picture — it’s the equivalent of destiny versus free will,” explains cocreator and executive producer Brett Goldstein. “If soulmates exist, then it’s this person you’re destined for. But if you’re destined, then you have no choice. But we live in a world where theoretically we have free will, so that’s the real question: If everything’s laid out for you, then what’s the point of your basic life?” In the premiere episode, Nikki (Succession’s Sarah Snook) is a mother of two who’s happy in her life with husband Franklin (Kingsley Ben-Adir). But she’s constantly wondering: Could she be even happier? David Costabile (Billions) plays a college professor who has his personal and professional life thrown into chaos when a woman (Sonya Cassidy, Lodge 49) hacks into his Soul Connex

Would You Take The Test?

Some Soulmates cast members answer the big question:

Malin Akerman: © 2019 Getty Images. Credit: Kimberly White/Getty Images.

Betsy Brandt: © 2019 Getty Images. Credit: John Wolfsohn/Getty Images.

Sarah Snook: Yes “Approaching the project, I was pretty confirmed that, yeah, of course, I’d take the test, and pretty amazed that people would think twice about taking it. ... I was single at the time I was doing it, so that’s maybe why I was much more gung-ho about the idea.”

account in “The Lovers” episode. In “Break on Through,” Malin Akerman (Billions) and Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) play two people who embark on a disturbing odyssey in search of meaning in their lives after their soulmates have died. “Sitting in a group somewhat like AA for people who’ve lost their soulmates that they’ve never met, it’s just really a strange beginning to this really cool episode,” Akerman says. “I just loved it. I thought it was just such a creative episode, and really kind of disturbing, all in one.” In the case of Akerman’s character, the soulmate test gave her tunnel vision, and she became unable to see the forest for the trees. “Instead of using our own gut feeling and our own brains and developing our own opinions, we’re going against our own grain,” Akerman says. “That is so frustrating to watch, but so much fun to play in a role like this. You get to play the duality of it, the contradicting feelings within oneself.” In the vein of Netflix’s Black Mirror, Soulmates is thought-provoking, imaginative and enthralling sci fi that digs deep into the human condition. And the future holds more: AMC has already ordered a second season. Premieres on AMC Monday, Oct. 5

Kingsley Ben-Adir: No “I don’t think I would take it. I think if anything the show has made me feel like I don’t believe that there is, like, someone who’s out there to be perfect.” Sonya Cassidy: No “I would like to know that someone has chosen to cherish me, rather than them being like, ‘Oh, you know, you’re the one, so let’s get on with it.’” Malin Akerman: No “My sort of approach to life is to try to roll with the punches and find the silver linings in situations. ... I don’t want to go to psychics or read too much into horoscopes, because I do think it just plants a little seed in your brain that maybe doesn’t necessarily need to be there.” Betsy Brandt: No “I think if I didn’t take it — which I probably wouldn’t — I would think about it all the time. ... That would mess you up, the fact that it’s out there. That it exists is, you know, that’s already a conundrum, before you even decide to take it or not.” 7

Doctor Who: The Faceless Ones

This is the mostly missing eighth serial of the fourth season of Doctor Who, which was broadcast in six weekly parts from April to May 1967, starring Patrick Troughton as the Doctor. Only two of the six episodes are held in the BBC film archives with snippets of footage and still images existing from the other four. Fortunately, off-air recordings of the soundtrack also still exist, making the animation of a complete serial possible once again, and that is what has been done here. The Faceless Ones sees the TARDIS arrive on Earth at a runway at Gatwick Airport in England, where the Doctor and his companions encounter sinister identity-stealing aliens known as the Chameleons. The first three episodes of the serial air tonight, the three concluding episodes air tomorrow night. Premieres on BBC America Oct. 7-8
