Blue Bloods The Sinner CSI: Vegas

TV NEWS

QUESTIONS

WITH PAULA NEWSOME By Taylor Neumann

The show that launched a thousand imitators is back, and it’s ready to remind viewers that in the end, it’s one of a kind. For more than a decade, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2000-15) was one of the most watched dramas in the world. Spawning three spinoffs (Miami, NY and Cyber), the franchise returns with CSI: Vegas (Wednesdays on CBS beginning Oct. 6). Leading the Vegas crime lab is Maxine (newcomer to the franchise Paula Newsome). Here she answers our “5 Questions.”

Is Maxine out in the field with the cases or stuck behind a desk? Both. Maxine’s history, she was a basketball player at Northwestern University. And that’s where she got her doctorate. Each scientist has something that is their specialty. Max’s is genetics and kinesiology. But she also likes getting out in the field and getting her hands dirty. What’s it been like for you joining this huge franchise at this new moment? I’ll tell you what, so like any old L.A. actress, I’m coming out of a Pilates class. And I looked at my phone and there was a call from my agent and then a text from the head of the agency. And I was like, “Oh, @#$%.” … And I called back, and they were like, “They want you to do CSI.” And so in that moment, it was like, “Oh my God.” I was a little overwhelmed. In terms of doing the acting, the acting is the same. The work is the same, the exposure is different. So it’s just a matter of navigating the exposure. And the best way I find to do that is just to stay in a conversation with the person I’m having a conversation with. … So whether that’s Bill Petersen [who portrays Gil Grissom], whether that’s the head of CBS, whether that’s the guy who cleans out the trailers or whether that’s one of my fellow actors.

What jobs did you work before becoming an actor? Of course, I was a waiter for a period of time. I did a little telemarketing for like half an hour. I did singing telegrams. That was fun. You come in an outfit and with balloons and it’s singing. What TV shows are you watching right now? I’m watching the show Lupin. It’s a French television show online about Arsène Lupin. … I don’t use the subtitles — I speak French — but it’s really, really, really neat. 2

Do you have any good stories from filming? I remember it was me and Jorja [Fox] filming; I think it was the first episode. And the first episodes are always like the first season, you end up shooting a lot longer because everybody’s just trying to figure out where the Post-its are. The days are longer. And there was one day that we were there until, I think, 3:30am. And I had to talk about single nucleotide polymorphisms. And that’s not even all. [But] we did the scene in like two takes and everybody from the crew to the director were like, “Oh my God, thank you so much.” Then we could all go home for that day.

Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff

It’s early September and Heather Locklear’s got a lot going on. Her parents — Dad 92 and Mom 88 — are at the top of her priority list as she juggles their needs, while making time to talk about a project that is especially dear to her heart. With a resumé that boasts plenty of iconic TV characters — Melrose Place’s Amanda Woodward, Dynasty’s Sammy Jo, Spin City’s Caitlin Moore, T.J. Hooker’s Officer Sheridan — Locklear now puts God and family and friends at the top of her priority list. When Locklear was given the script about bestselling author Dr. Richard Carlson, whose books have inspired and elevated the lives of millions (Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff being one of them), and his writing partner and wife Kristine, she knew she wanted to be involved in sharing their story. “I read the script, and I’m like, ‘I love this,’” Locklear shares. “I want to do something that has to include God because I’m so God-driven. … [During] the pandemic I didn’t know if I wanted to act, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. … With Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff, that book was out in the ’90s. And it was a happy thing. It was a happy book. And it’s so clear, so simple.” The Carlsons’ bestselling self-help book series has helped so many people reduce stress and achieve 4

happiness. The Lifetime original film Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff dives more into the love story between Richard and Kristine and what happened after Richard’s sudden death. “I’m going to cry,” Locklear says, reflecting on their story and playing Kristine. “I think it’s special because we all meet people, but not all of us meet people who are our soulmates.” Kristine still has Richard’s leather jacket hanging on the back of his chair in his home office. Her story is one of profound loss and strength in rebuilding her family and life. In addition to their love story, it’s the message this couple shared and professed that Locklear hopes enriches others. “It’s so touching of what we all need to do. And I especially believe, because of what’s going on, whether it be political, whether it be the environment, all of the changes that are going on, [the message is] just be present — be with your people, be with your animals, be with your Earth. … We do stuff to make ourselves go further, make money, stuff that’s really, in the end, not important. That rose to fruition to me. That’s what it’s all about.” Premieres on Lifetime Saturday, Oct. 16

LA BREA

Buckle Up For One Wild Blockbuster Of A Ride With NBC’s New Spectacle. Series Star Natalie Zea Takes Us Inside The Chaos. By Barb Oates

“If you go to the La Brea Tar Pits and study the animals that were around during that time, that’s where we’re at,” tells the always delightful and refreshingly candid Natalie Zea on the setting of NBC’s new La Brea. So expect Ice Age mammoths and mastodons who once roamed the Los Angeles region some 11,000 to 50,000 years ago as just some of the terrorizing elements Zea’s character Eve Harris faces after falling in a massive sinkhole. In the effects-heavy sci-fi thriller, a portion of the city of Los Angeles is destroyed and many of its residents are presumed dead after a catastrophic rupture creates a massive sinkhole at the famed La Brea Tar Pits location. Eve is split from her family — her daughter (Zyra Gorecki) and estranged husband (The Night Shift’s Eoin Macken) remain on the “upstairs,” while Eve and her son (Jack Martin) have fallen to the “downstairs.” “The sinkhole is massive. There’s an entire community of people and things and buildings that get stuck down in [this vortex]. Basically, the remnants of Wilshire Boulevard,” Zea explains. Transported back to prehistoric times, the survivors are threatened by not only primitive beasts and the unexplainable, but each other, as well. “I think when you’re in a situation like that, everything’s a threat. I mean, we’ve all read Lord of the Rings. We’ve all watched Lost. We’re all familiar with this particular type of the past. There’s a lot of like, ‘What would I do?’ that goes on,” Zea explains. “Everybody goes a different direction. Some people are threatened by everything, including the people. Some people rally around and become one of the more natural leaders of the group. Some people keep secrets, some people pair off. There’s not only the physical threat, but it’s the whole psychology of who to trust, who not to trust. And what part do I play in this dynamic?” In the end, however, the real star of the show is the spectacle of it, and how visually impressive it truly is. Premieres on NBC Tuesday, Sept. 28

When creator Don Mancini’s horror film Child’s Play debuted in theaters in 1988, few people, perhaps not even Mancini himself, might have anticipated how it would launch a multimedia franchise that has continued in the decades since. That franchise has consisted of six sequels (not including a 2019 reboot produced by a different creative team), comic books and assorted merchandise associated with its central monster — Chucky, a kids doll inhabited by the soul of a serial killer. Looking like a psychotic Dennis the Menace and with actor Brad Dourif’s voice memorably providing his diabolical dialogue, Chucky has remained a fan-favorite movie slasher, a creepily compelling combo of Jason Voorhees’ indestructibility and Freddy Krueger’s macabre one-liners. The Chucky-verse is now expanding into its first TV series — the appropriately titled 10-episode Chucky. Mancini is creator and showrunner, and he has brought along familiar faces (and voices) from the films like Dourif, Jennifer Tilly, Fiona Dourif and Alex Vincent, as well as new cast members. In the series, when 14-year-old Jake (franchise newcomer Zackary Arthur) buys Chucky (voiced again by Dourif) at a yard sale, it throws his idyllic suburban town into chaos with a series of horrifying murders. Meanwhile, friends and foes from Chucky’s past creep back into his world and threaten to expose the truth behind his mysterious origins. “It is a continuation of the [Chucky] mythology,” Mancini explains. “We begin by establishing some new characters in small-town America. But gradually, we start to bring back the fan-favorite characters, all of whom were left on multiple cliffhangers in [the 2017 film] Cult of Chucky.” Among those faves is Tilly’s character Tiffany Valentine, Chucky’s equally homicidal “bride” who is still possessing Tilly’s body, as she did when the films left off. “It’s mostly me, Jennifer Tilly, in all my fleshly glory,” the actress says of her primarily live-action, meta role as a fictionalized version of herself via Tiffany in Chucky. “I think the original Chucky fans are going to love [the series]. It’s chock full of Chucky goodness. … I think that we’re [also] going to find a whole new generation of Chucky fans.” Tilly confirms what Mancini says about the show’s gradual escalation. “It starts out, it’s almost like a coming-of-age story about these kids and their problems at school ... and then Chucky comes in, and it gets really demented. Then the OGs, as I call them — me, Fiona Dourif, Alex Vincent — start to arrive in town one by one, and the @#$% just hits the fan. … This evil starts to infiltrate this small town, and it gets absolutely bonkers.” More bonkers than the wildly inventive Chucky films? “I would say that the switch to a new medium stoked our creativity,” Mancini says. “By taking it to television, this is arguably the biggest reinvention. … We have much more time to delve into characters and relationships that people have been following for decades.”
