List
The editors of Channel Guide Magazine and TV Guide Magazine share their personal favorites.
THE UNICORN (CBS)
This is the most heartfelt story of the 2019-20 season as it follows a single dad raising his adolescent daughters after the loss of his wife. The lovable Walton Goggins is raw and vulnerable as his equally lovable character Wade Felton. For Goggins, this role has tremendous meaning. “This is really who I am. It’s closer to me than anything that I’ve ever been a part of. It’s how I relate to my son and my friends. And it just … it’s a suit that I want to wear every day.” And it’s a series we want to watch every week.
Cobie Smulders drops her S.H.I.E.L.D. to play the scrappiest, sexiest P.I. in Portland, Ore., in the season’s most entertaining action vehicle. As Dex Parios, an ex-military fixer for hire, Smulders becomes a bona fide TV star in this raucous adaptation of a graphic novel. Wielding her sardonic wit like a blunt-force weapon, Dex can take and give a beating with the best of them, but never gives up the fight.
COUNTRY MUSIC (PBS)
Ken Burns has always amazed with his thoroughly engrossing documentaries, but this eight-episode, 16-hour film is one of his best as he charts the joy, sorrow, love and loss of country music from its early beginnings through the late ’90s.
A VERY BRADY RENOVATION (HGTV)
All the Brady kids … all our favorite HGTV designers … all recreating the rooms of the Brady set in the actual Brady house.
MIXED-ISH
(ABC)
This black-ish spinoff set in the mid 1980s tells the story of how 12-year-old Rainbow (Arica Himmel) and her mixedrace family left their hippie commune and tried to fit into a mainstream society that wasn’t as accepting as it is today. 2
PERFECT HARMONY (NBC
Think Mr. Holland’s Opus by way of a Protestant Sister Act, and then join the chorus to sing the praises of a delightful comedy starring TV veteran Bradley Whitford (The West Wing) as a curmudgeonly music professor who finds himself whipping a church choir of quirky Kentucky yokels (including Pitch Perfect’s Anna Camp) into vocal shape. Whitford’s gruff charisma earns a “Hallelujah” as he rattles the pompous and pious, making beautiful music through comedy — or is it the other way around?

That’s A Wrap! Final Seasons This Season
There are a lot of long-running series ending this season. Criminal Minds and Supernatural will come to a close this year after 15 seasons, Modern Family will end after 11 seasons, Suits after nine, Arrow after eight, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. after seven, and Empire, Power (Starz did announce an extended final season), How to Get Away With Murder and Madam Secretary after six seasons. Showtime announced that the eighth and final season of its awardwinning hit drama Homeland will begin its final 12 episodes on Sunday, Feb. 9. 4
Starz announced that the fifth season of Outlander won’t be happening this fall, and we’re going to need to wait until early 2020. While Claire and Jamie spent Season 4 remaining in the New World and building their home in North Carolina, executive producer Matthew B. Roberts said, “What is a ‘dream’ for some is a ‘nightmare’ for others. Being at the center of the birth of America is often a bloody and violent and heartbreaking matter. Now, in Season 5, Jamie and Claire’s duty is not only to their loved ones, but to the community of settlers forming part of the ever-increasing Clan Fraser.”

Among all the new and returning shows debuting in September, don’t miss the annual Emmy Awards (live on FOX, Sunday, Sept. 22) to remind yourself of all the superior television from last year. Because it was on hiatus for so long between its seventh and eighth seasons, HBO’s Game of Thrones was not eligible for Emmy nominations last year. But the mega-popular drama more than made up for that with its final season, leading the way with a whopping 32 nominations this year. What you won’t see is anyone leading the festivities — FOX Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier confirmed the ceremony will go without a host.

The recent merger of AT&T and Time Warner has resulted in three entertainment powerhouses — HBO, Warner Bros. (the movie studio) and Turner — coming together. Next year WarnerMedia will launch its streaming service HBO Max, which will combine content from all three properties into one awesome streaming platform. WarnerMedia content that once was available on Netflix will now only be available on HBO Max. Earlier this year, TBS, which is part of WarnerMedia, announced that it would be showing dramas in 2020 (it’s not just about the laughs anymore), starting with the highly anticipated Snowpiercer starring Jennifer Connelly.

“Power” Gets An Aftershow
The sixth and final “supersized” season (15 episodes) of the Starz hit series Power premiered on Aug. 25 and will run in two parts. The first part is 10 episodes; Part 2 of the final season will be the final five episodes and will debut in early January. Because every episode this season will leave fans with so much to buzz about and dissect, tells the Starz executive team, the network created the official Power aftershow, Power Confidential, featuring the cast and creative team behind the series, as well as celebrity fans, guest stars and more.

“Riverdale” Enlists Shannen Doherty For Its Tribute To Luke Perry
The CW’s drama Riverdale will remember its former cast member Luke Perry, who passed away in March, during the show’s Season 4 premiere in October. Making the special episode even more memorable will be the appearance of Perry’s good friend and onetime Beverly Hills, 90210 costar Shannen Doherty as a guest star in the premiere. Doherty’s appearance on Riverdale is “something that Luke wanted to happen since Season 1,” executive producer Roberto AguirreSacasa said. According to The CW, the Season 4 premiere of Riverdale “will reflect Luke Perry’s enduring legacy and the indelible imprint his character, Fred Andrews, had on Riverdale.”

WHAT’S NEW: COMEDY Carol’s Second Act
Premieres on CBS Sept. 26 Patricia Heaton (The Middle, Everybody Loves Raymond Raymond) is back in this funny-bone tickler about a middle-aged divorcée who has finally accomplished her dream of becoming a physician. The stage is set for mishaps and merriment as Carol (Heaton) deals with being “the old intern” among peers her children’s age. Heaton shared what it was like tackling a new TV project:
What drew you to Carol’s Second Act Act? Patricia Heaton: Having The Middle end just as my [four] kids left the house left me a little unmoored. Who was I without the identity of a mother or a working actress? I sympathized with Carol going through her divorce, her children grown up, and thinking, “What do I do now?” After playing a mom for so long on Raymond and The Middle, I needed to do something different, but something that was believable for me that I could relate to. Carol was that project. I love that she chose something challenging. Who is Carol? She’s a no-nonsense, pragmatic person. Her personality is right for a doctor because she always loved science. She also was a longtime high school teacher who had to be organized dealing with high schoolers and their hormones and emotions.
At heart, is the show about a woman finding herself? Yes. There’s sadness when your kids leave the house, but there’s also a sense of freedom. I didn’t realize until then what a weight making seven meals a week was. [Laughs] There’s a sense that going to medical school is her way of doing selfcare. Carol’s surrounded by interns who are 25 years younger than she is. Is she once again “Mom,” but to her colleagues? One of Carol’s struggles is trying not to mom the interns. It’s better both for her and the interns, so that they know they’ve got to make grownup decisions. I’m happy to mom my fellow actors, but Carol has to realize that’s not her identity at work. — Ileane Rudolph 6

Why did her marriage break up? We’ll learn where the marriage went wrong. I have a wonderful line in the pilot where I say, “My husband went to find himself, and now he’s sleeping on his sister’s futon and I’m a doctor, so life is good.”

Stumptown Smulders, star of ABC’s new dramedy, explains her character, Dex Parios, as “a very difficult woman to describe.” She’s a veteran, out of the service for about a decade. “She’s lost, she’s got a huge gambling debt. She’s a drinker. She can’t hold down a steady job, and she’s just barely making ends meet,” Smulders continues. “In the pilot, she gets introduced to the idea of being a private detective.” The show is based on the graphic novel series and doesn’t shy away from showing Dex’s darker side as she lives with PTSD from multiple military tours and takes care of her brother with Down syndrome — with the help of her friend Grey, played by New Girl’s Jake Johnson. Her unapologetic style also puts her in the firing line of hardcore criminals. Smulders adds, “This is a woman who does not do anything normally.” Premieres on ABC Sept. 25
