9/11:

20 YEARS LATER, TELEVISION SPECIALS REMEMBER By Jeff Pfeiffer

This month marks the 20th anniversary of the devastating terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, that drastically changed the country and the world. Several networks and streaming services are solemnly commemorating the event with documentary specials.

Generation 9/11 — PBS, Aug. 31 at 8pm Follow seven young people whose fathers died during the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. When they were born, the nation was drawn together. Twenty years later, in a divided America, they enter adulthood with a sense of responsibility that stems from their own personal tragedy. Frontline: “America After 9/11” — PBS, Sept. 7 at 8pm This Frontline episode explores America’s response to the 9/11 attacks, acts that not only transformed the Middle East, but also fundamentally altered America itself.

Rise and Fall: The World Trade Center — History, Sept. 10 at 7pm Through a unique architectural and engineering lens, this doc takes a chronological look at the conception, construction and destruction of the World Trade Center towers. 9/11: The Legacy — History, Sept. 10 at 6pm More than 72 million children woke up the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, to what seemed like an ordinary Tuesday; by the end, eight had lost their lives and more than 3,000 had lost their parents. This poignant hourlong documentary shares extraordinary stories of resilience and healing from the children impacted. 9/11: Four Flights — History, Sept. 11 at 7pm Four flights — American 11, United 175, American 77 and United 93 — took off the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, unaware of the life-changing events to follow. Looking at all four flights for the first time in one program, the film unveils a saga of surprising connections, strange coincidences and detrimental decisions.

Muhammad Ali

Life always has been about the choices you make, and charmer James Wolk (Mad Men), who’s equally as charming in real life, shines as the title character Joe. Wolk plays out three separate paths his character could have taken — many of the stories heart-wrenching and beautiful. Which one is reality is the real question.

How did brash young boxer Cassius Clay transform into global icon Muhammad Ali? Ken Burns, Sarah Burns and David McMahon present the must-see documentary event of the fall.

If you like series like The Undoing and Mare of Easttown, this one is for you. Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney deserve Emmy recognition for their portrayals in this complex and agonizing story of the tattered American dream.

Our Kind of People (FOX)

Although a screener wasn’t available as of presstime, star Yaya DaCosta (formerly of Chicago Med) gave us enough of the backstory on this soapy drama that revolves around money, power and Martha’s Vineyard that we’re sure we are going to be hooked. 4

Everyone loves to root for an underdog. This story of hope and second chances is equally fun and moving. Scandal’s Scott Foley stars as the show’s reality dance show producer, who fills the show with some good lines with his brutal honesty, while it’s delightful to see newcomer Simone Recasner shine. But the series goes much deeper into following the complicated lives of many of the participants. When we talked with Foley, he was just on set in Chicago with 26 actors. “It’s like herding cats. It’s insane,” he laughed. “But it’s all about these characters and their backstories that makes this series so rich with opportunity.” And we couldn’t agree more.

The TV Juggernaut Owns Primetime With His “FBI,” “Law & Order” And “Chicago” Series Franchises. By Barb

Oates, Ryan A. Berenz, Taylor Neumann and Holly Friedel

American producer, television show creator and writer Dick Wolf clearly has mastered the winning formula for TV success. The 74-year-old mastermind has built three major TV tentpoles with his Law & Order, FBI and Chicago universes. He expands his empire further this season with the new spinoff FBI: International, where he can boast eight hours of real estate during primetime. What’s the secret to his ratings success? “First, it starts on the page with our writers. The stories are the backbone, and we build around it, with talented actors, directors and production team,” tells Peter Jankowski, president and executive producer at Wolf Entertainment. “Viewers know when they watch a Wolf Entertainment show that they will get quality acting, writing and production values. If you like Law & Order or Chicago Fire, you will like FBI and its siblings.” And that we do! Here we start with the major FBI crossover that leads into the new FBI: International, and catch you up on Wolf World for the new fall season.

DICK WOLF DOMINATES! FBI CBS

■ Returns: Sept. 21 at 7pm ■ Where We Left Off: In the Season 3 finale of FBI, five murdered men at a highstakes gambling table lead the team to Antonio Vargas’ infamous cartel. Maggie (Missy Peregrym) and OA (Zeeko Zaki) find a person of interest and are able to track down and arrest Vargas. The real pulse-pounding action follows when Isobel (Alana De La Garza) is informed that there are three bombs located in Grand Central Station. With little time to spare, Isobel assigns Maggie and OA to find Vargas’ wife and son in hopes he would reveal the codes to disable the bombs. The two succeed in finding them, and Vargas reveals the codes, leading to a successful win for the FBI team. ■ What To Expect: Maggie and OA are taking a trip to Budapest! The agents will help introduce FBI: International in various crossover episodes. In an interview with Zaki, he explains: “Something happens that reminds me of a phone call I got when I was working a tip line a few months ago,

and the idea that I let something slip, that I messed up, causes my character to want to try and fix the issue so that I don’t have to put a failure on the book. It is a simple story of redemption and trying to do what’s right, but also understanding that we can’t save everybody.” Peregrym is excited to be exploring a new country and new ground with her character Maggie. “What’s exciting is that we really know who we’re playing and we’ve got the format down, which makes it even more fun to come to work because you can push the envelope and try new things. I’m looking forward to seeing what other stuff they do on the personal side with each character.” A romantic relationship with the partners, perhaps? “It’s funny, some people want it, some people don’t,” Zaki laughs. “I feel our dynamic proves how strong friendship can be. You know the Dick Wolf rule, it’ll take 10 to 15 years to get there, which is great. We get the character stuff in teaspoons, not ladles, which allows us to hopefully last 20 years, so we’ll see what happens.”

DICK WOLF DOMINATES

FBI: MOST WANTED

CBS

■ What To Expect: “All I know is it’s pretty intense,” McMahon says of the Season 3 premiere, which is the second part of a three-episode FBI crossover event. McMahon says it won’t take long for the smoke to clear from the gunshots. “The resolution comes pretty quickly, like we learn what happens to our characters, but the fallout takes a while.” Joining the regular cast for Season 3 is Alexa Davalos (The Man in the High Castle) as a new member of Jess’ team. As for the spoiler everyone wants to know: Does Kenny buy Jess’ motorcycle? “I can’t give that away, man!” McMahon laughs. “There’s no point in a good bike just sitting in a garage, let’s put it that way.”

FBI: INTERNATIONAL ■ Premieres: Sept. 21 at 9pm ■ Airs: Tuesdays at 8pm ■ Who’s In It: Luke Kleintank, Heida Reed ■ What’s It All About: The new series launches during a three-way franchise crossover event. It focuses on an International Fly Team based in Budapest that travels the globe neutralizing threats against Americans. “When you think of International’s intrigue, it’s much more

Bourne than Bond,” says Dick Wolf. Even without the martinis or guns (they aren’t allowed to carry them!), they rely on intelligence, quick thinking and pure brawn to protect the U.S. and its people. “This is a thriller, but it’s also entertainment that at the core will explore the real working relationship between law enforcement officers — something we’ve never done before,” adds Peter Jankowski, executive producer.

■ Returns: Sept. 21 at 8pm; airs Tuesdays at 9pm beginning Sept. 28 ■ Where We Left Off: In the Season 2 finale, Jess (Julian McMahon) was over the moon about girlfriend Sarah (Jen Landon) moving in. “I haven’t been this happy in years and it’s all because of you,” he told her. So, yeah, they’re doomed. Kenny (Kellan Lutz) came over to check out Jess’ motorcycle, and all hell broke loose as Sarah’s disturbed ex, Hugh (James Carpinello), made bail and came looking for payback. Shots were fired off-camera, and we’re left wondering who was on the giving/receiving end of the bullets.

CHICAGO FIRE

NBC

■ Returns: Sept. 22 at 8pm ■ What To Expect: Lt. Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney), Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso), Tony (Anthony Ferraris) and Capp (Randy Flagler) are all in danger, as they became trapped while rescuing a man from a sinking boat. Will they all survive? Obviously addressing the fate of the men above is the first order of business for the new season. Fans are also eager to see what a relationship between Brett (Kara Killmer) and Casey (Jesse Spencer) looks like.

CHICAGO MED

NBC

■ Returns: Sept. 22 at 7pm ■ What To Expect: Two of the series’ original cast members, Torrey DeVitto (Dr. Natalie Manning) and Yaya DaCosta (April Sexton), departed at the end of last season. Steven Weber, who recurred as Dr. Dean Archer last season, has been promoted to a series regular this season, and there are also two new faces as series regulars: Dr. Dylan Scott (Guy Lockard) and Dr. Stevie Hammer (Kristen Hager).

LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT NBC

■ Returns: Sept. 23 at 7pm ■ Airs: Thursdays at 8pm ■ Where We Left Off: In the season finale of SVU, Fin (Ice-T) and Phoebe (Jennifer Esposito) had a happy ending even after deciding to call off their wedding when they realized they liked their relationship the way it is. ■ What To Expect: After its two-hour Season 23 premiere, the venerable, record-holding crime drama will settle into its regular time slot an hour later starting the following week. Things pick up mere hours after the Season 22 finale. ADA Carisi (Peter Scanavino) is called to a late-night meeting where a key player in a housing-for-sex scheme is willing to flip on her co-conspirators in exchange for a deal with federal prosecutors. Meanwhile, Benson is involved in a scary car accident — or was it intentional?

CHICAGO P.D.

NBC

■ Returns: Sept. 22 at 9pm ■ What To Expect: Detective Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and Officer Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) found Officer Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) bleeding after being shot and rushed her to the hospital. Will Burgess survive? She was last seen going into surgery, and she did lose a lot of blood. And will Halstead accept Upton’s proposal, or will he figure out she’s hiding something from him after what happened with Roy?

LAW & ORDER: ORGANIZED CRIME NBC

■ Returns: Sept. 23 at 9pm ■ Where We Left Off: The first season of this SVU spinoff ended with both triumph and tragedy. Police Sgt. Ayanna Bell (Danielle Moné Truitt) arrested corrupt pharmaceutical giant Richard Wheatley (Dylan McDermott) and his family, a case Bell had been working for years. But her undercover embed was murdered, and one of her own in the task force betrayed her. For Detective Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni), his wife’s murder brought him back to New York after 10 years away. His determination to get justice paid off with the arrest of the Wheatley family, but he also learned that someone he trusted was behind the hit on his wife. ■ What To Expect: Season 2 picks up three months after the Season 1 finale. While Bell and her wife, Denise Bullock (Keren Dukes), have welcomed a baby son into the world, Stabler hasn’t seen his family in a while, as he is deep undercover. Their new target is the K-O — a powerful crime family trying to dominate the city’s illegal cocaine trade and eliminate their competition. McDermott is returning this season. All times CT.

All times CT.

■ Premieres: Sept. 5 & 12 at 8pm ■ Who’s In It? Mark Bonnar, Jamie Sives, Ruth Bradley ■ What’s It All About? This Masterpiece four-part series is a darkly absorbing tale of deceit in which Max (Bonnar, Unforgotten) and Jake (Sives, To the Ends of the Earth) run into an elderly pedestrian during an inebriated drive home from a wedding. Things get complicated when they meet the victim’s niece Angie (Bradley) at the wake, where they have come to retrieve incriminating evidence. Angie and Jake hit it off, which complicates Max’s plan to escape justice. 8

change their lives by participating in the show. “I read the script and I just thought it was fun, not just the character of Nick, who I find incredibly interesting and entertaining and somewhat liberating as an actor to play, but the whole script was fun and the idea of the show inside of a show,” Foley says. “I think now’s the right time for a real feel-good show like this ... I hope people are looking to root for an underdog, which I think this show is somewhat about.” We’re all in on rooting for Gabby (newcomer Recasner) as she looks to fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming a dancer. “I get goose bumps on my arms from that storyline,” Foley says. And we did, too!

As he warns one young participant, “We’re going to look for dirt and exploit it, and then I’ll feel bad but not that bad because that’s my job.” The show tenderly revolves around these diverse, down-on-their-luck characters who are attempting to

ORDINARY JOE

CSI: Vegas: © 2021 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. Credit: Sonja Flemming

Queens: © 2021 American Broadcasting Companies, Inc. All rights reserved. Credit: Jeff Daly

■ Premieres: Sept. 20 ■ Airs: Mondays at 9pm ■ Who’s In It? James Wolk, Natalie Martinez, Elizabeth Lail, Charlie Barnett ■ What’s It All About? There’s nothing ordinary about Ordinary Joe. Charmer Wolk (Mad Men) is Joe Kimbreau, a Syracuse student on graduation day who is at a crossroads in his life — should he pursue being the next Billy Joel, follow his kind-of girlfriend Jenny to her summer house on the East Coast, take a chance on the hot gal Amy he just bumped into, remain devoted to his family? Much like This Is Us takes us through different time periods, Ordinary Joe brilliantly follows three extremely different life paths in emotional, heartwarming stories that leave you shocked along the way. Bring your Kleenex.

CSI: VEGAS

CBS

■ Premieres: Oct. 6 ■ Airs: Wednesdays at 9pm ■ Who’s In It? Original CSI: Crime Scene Investigation cast members William Petersen, Jorja Fox and Wallace Langham, who will reprise their roles as Gil Grissom, Sara Sidle and David Hodges, respectively; Paula Newsome, Matt Lauria, Mandeep Dhillon, Mel Rodriguez ■ What’s It All About? For more than a decade, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2000-15) was one of the most watched dramas in the world. The grisly, neon-tinged exploits of a Sin City forensic team captivated viewers with its cutting-edge science, cinematic production values and winning ensemble led by Petersen as “The Miami Miami, Bug Man” Grissom. After spawning three spinoffs (Miami, NY and Cyber),), the franchise returns to where it all began for this sequel, which finds the Vegas Crime Lab’s new head (Newsome) calling in reinforcements in a crisis. That cavalry includes Petersen, as well as fellow original series costars Langham and Fox. That means we’ll learn the status of Gil and Sara’s relationship, along with just how much the high-tech world of criminal forensics has changed in six years. By mixing old blood with the new, CBS should hit the jackpot. All times CT.

QUEENS

ABC

■ Premieres: Oct. 19 ■ Airs: Tuesdays at 9pm ■ Who’s In It? Eve, Naturi Naughton, Nadine Velazquez, Brandy, Taylor Selé ■ What’s It All About? Think of ABC’s new music-fueled drama as if the Spice Girls reunited with Victoria Beckham when they were 40 and tried to recapture their fame. That would have been so cool. Well, here you have it with the Nasty Bitches — a fictional ’90s group — who are estranged and out of touch but willing to make a run at reclaiming their dominance in the hip-hop world.

WHAT’S NEW

NCIS: HAWAI‘I CBS

Foa and Renée Felice Smith; and New Orleans wrapped its seven-season run with a wedding for big boss Pride (we’ll miss you, Scott Bakula!). With Hawai‘i, producers break new ground. The NCIS world has no shortage of fascinating, gutsy women, but for the first time the team lead is female. She’s Special Agent in Charge Jane Tennant, a mother of two, played by Vanessa Lachey (Truth Be Told), who notes: “I’m excited to bring a different layer to this role and hopefully inspire this next generation of young girls and women.” And just if you were wondering, the series spelling of Hawai‘i reflects the state’s name in the Hawaiian language.

AMERICAN RUST

Showtime

■ Premieres: Sept. 12 ■ Airs: Sundays at 9pm ■ Who’s In It? Jeff Daniels, Maura Tierney, Bill Camp, David Alvarez, Alex Neustaedter, Julia Mayorga ■ What’s It All About? Del Harris (Daniels) is a “ticked off and kinda jumpy” police chief of Buell, Pennsylvania, a Rust Belt, bluecollar town that’s a lot closer to West Virginia than Pittsburgh — and we’re not just talking geography. His love interest is Grace (Tierney), a local dressmaker, whose son Billy (Neustaedter) turns down a scholarship out of town and gets involved on the wrong side of the law. Each of the characters struggles to decide what they are willing to do to protect the ones they love in this compelling “who really did it” drama. The series is based on Philipp Meyer’s celebrated novel of the same name.

The series is inspired by the true story of the Flenory brothers — Demetrius “Big Meech” and Terry “Southwest T” — who rose from the decaying streets of southwest Detroit in the late 1980s and gave birth to one of the most influential crime families in this country. Their vision ultimately extended beyond the drug trade and into the world of hip-hop.

This is a reboot of the 2004-07 USA Network drama. The title refers to the number of overlooked, undervalued people who disappeared over the course of the last century; in one day, they return, no older and with no memory of what happened (shades of Manifest!). WHAT’S NEW

NBC

LA BREA

■ Premieres: Oct. 18 ■ Airs: Mondays at 8pm ■ Who’s In It? Rudi Dharmalingam, Geraldine Hakewill, Mandy McElhinney ■ What’s It All About? This eight-episode psychological drama is inspired by Australian showrunner Kristen Dunphy’s personal experiences. The series follows Nik Katira (Dharmalingam, in an unforgettable role), an upbeat psych nurse working at Wakefield, who has a gift for soothing and reaching the unreachable, but slowly begins to lose his grip. “It’s a fascinating journey into the mind of a man tasked with worrying about everyone else’s minds,” shares Jana Winograde, president of entertainment for Showtime Networks, about the series. 12

■ Premieres: Sept. 21 ■ Airs: Tuesdays at 8pm ■ Who’s In It? Yaya DaCosta, Morris Chestnut, Joe Morton, Nadine Ellis, Lance Gross, Rhyon Nicole Brown, Kyle Bary, Alana Bright ■ What’s It All About? Money, mansions and power fill this soapy drama. Set in the aspirational world of Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard, a historical stronghold where the rich and powerful Black elite have come to play for over 50 years, the series follows strong-willed single mom Angela (DaCosta) as she sets out to reclaim her family’s name and make an impact with her revolutionary haircare line. A dark secret about her mother’s past turns her world upside down and shakes up this community forever. “After six seasons on Chicago Med, while it was difficult to leave the people who I’ve loved working with, I was looking forward to stepping into a role that required more of my instrument. I’m looking forward to wearing clothes other than scrubs, and just to continue stretching and growing as an artist,” DaCosta tells us, as she literally leapt out of her scrubs and into Angela’s jeans. “Angela Vaughn is a woman that many people who have big dreams can relate to. She is someone who has suffered from different childhood traumas that I think, unfortunately, a lot of people can relate to, whether there’s some healing to do around the mother wound or the father wound, or having to just remember and reassess who she really is in the world, in contrast to who she thought she was. As we get older, some of us discover secrets in our families, or some of us discover things that we didn’t know that can make us uncomfortable. So getting through that process in a way that is healthy and healing, I think will be inspiring.” All times CT.

■ Premieres: Sept. 22 ■ Airs: Wednesdays at 7:30pm ■ Who’s In It? Elisha “EJ” Williams, Dulé Hill, Saycon Sengbloh, Laura Kariuki, voice of Don Cheadle ■ What’s It All About? The beloved coming-of-age comedy that followed suburban teenager Kevin Arnold (Fred Savage) growing up in the late ’60s and early ’70s gets new life in this half-hour sitcom. The new rendition looks back at the same era through the eyes of 12-yearold Dean Williams and his Black, middle-class family in Montgomery, Alabama. Dean experiences the humorous and heartfelt highs and lows of adolescence — and

the social and political turbulence of the time — just as Kevin did. But as a Black kid in the Deep South, Dean faces challenges and situations that never presented themselves to Kevin. The events of Montgomery’s racial struggles (including Rosa Parks’ arrest, the bus boycott, the Freedom Riders and the march from Selma) still loom large for the Williams family and will no doubt resonate with 2021 America. Saladin K. Patterson (Dave, The Last O.G.) — who was raised in Montgomery — is a writer and executive producer, along with EPs Lee Daniels (Empire) and Marc Velez. Savage is also an EP and directed the pilot episode.

WHAT’S NEW COMEDY CENTRAL

DISNEY CHANNEL

■ Premieres: Oct. 1 ■ Airs: Fridays at 8:30pm ■ Who’s In It? Voices of Dana Snyder, Ashly Burch, Sumalee Montano, Jordan Klepper, Michaela Dietz ■ What’s It All About? This charmingly clever animated comedy comes from Bill Motz and Bob Roth, cocreators of LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures, and follows the odd-couple friendship that forms between surly specter Scratch (Snyder) and joyfully optimistic tween Molly McGee (Burch). Scratch lives comfortably in an abandoned house in the economically depressed town of Brighton. But his afterlife is thrown into disarray when cheery Molly and her family move into the house. Scratch is determined to get rid of the McGees but soon discovers that Molly isn’t the least bit afraid. To his horror, she wants to be BFFs. Scratch puts a curse on Molly, but it backfires and forces him to be stuck with her and her uplifting attitude. “This show is about a ghost and the girl who brings him back to life,” Motz says of their original concept for the characters. “Molly is this bright, happy starburst of positive energy,” Roth says. “She meets this grumpy ghost and infects him to be more like her. They become friends, and instead of him corrupting her, she corrupts him. She’s constantly flipping his negativity around to be a positive.” Molly’s also helping to revitalize Brighton. “Brighton itself is a pun,” Motz says. “Molly has come to ‘brighten’ the community.” But not everyone’s happy with the revival. “The more Molly spreads some joy through Brighton, that’s going to potentially create some trouble for Scratch,” Roth says. 14

issues, who date back from 1009 to the 1990s. Whether it’s the upbeat ’80s scout troop leader who still dons the arrow that killed him through his neck, or hippie Flower, who wandered over to the property during a music festival and was killed by a bear, their polarizing personalities and diverse age differences (we’re talking centuries) lead to some delightfully entertaining banter. The real shock, however, is when the ghosts learn that Samantha can see and hear them, even the cocky ’90s yuppie who, ahem, died without pants (and underwear)?! You know that story’s coming.

■ Premieres: Sept. 13 ■ Airs: Mondays at 10pm ■ Who’s In It? Voices of Jimmi Simpson, Kurtwood Smith, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Kristen Bell, Dax Shepard ■ What’s It All About? This stop-motion animated comic noir is set in super-sleazy Ultra City. Carpenter K. Smith (Smith), the town’s most powerful man and a candidate for mayor, has gone missing, and rookie detective David Mills (Simpson) and partner Gail Johnson (Randolph) must find him. If this doesn’t sound particularly funny, consider that these characters also happen to be walking, talking baby dolls that occasionally break into songand-dance numbers. The voice cast also includes Alia Shawkat, Bebe Neuwirth, Jason Mantzoukas, Tim Meadows, Debra Winger, Terry O’Quinn, Luis Guzmán and John C. Reilly. 15

THE ACTIVIST

CBS

■ Premieres: Oct. 22 ■ Airs: Fridays at 7pm ■ What’s It All About? This new competition series follows six activists who team up with three high-profile public figures and work together to bring actual change to the world, in three different areas — health, education and the environment. How do they go about it? The activists go head-to-head in challenges that will show off their specific causes, all with the goal of getting to the G20 Summit in Rome.

You are a huge Disney fan. Tell us the story of how you chose the name of your daughter. This was well before we were pregnant, but Cody and I were at Disney and we just started talking about kids and I said, “What would we name our kid if we had a kid?” We started with little girls and we were kind of spitballing some things. I walked past Liberty Square and I said, “What about Liberty?” And he said, “That’s a fantastic name.” So we’ve held on to that for probably about two, three years now. All times CT.

It sounds odd, but the judges’ table is top notch — singers Alanis Morissette, Nick Lachey, Grimes and will.i.am will rule over the festivities, and the whole thing is hosted by Rocsi Diaz.

Can you tell us what the series is going to cover? Brandi Rhodes: You’re going to learn a lot in a quick dosage about our version of the wrestling world — the AEW scene. ... You get to meet a lot of our friends and colleagues that are part of the AEW roster and executive team. And then aside from that, you’re going to see a crazy, very pregnant woman.

I would say that the most difficult element is ... when you’re that pregnant and people are in your face with cameras, you can kind of [have an attitude] that you really don’t care anymore. So the reality of what it’s really like when Brandi really doesn’t care is definitely going to be out there. There will be no hiding that.

KILLER CAMP

The CW

■ Premieres: Oct. 10 ■ Airs: Sundays at 8pm ■ What’s It All About? So this isn’t exactly a new show, as Season 1 originated in the U.K. and was brought over to the U.S. and aired on The CW last year. But the network loved the series so much that they commissioned a brand-new Season 2 to premiere this fall season. In case you missed it, the show follows a group of people who are left at “summer camp,” only one of them is secretly a murderer slowly picking them all off. The key is to earn money while figuring out which one of them is the killer. All times CT.

LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE

■ Premieres: Oct. 10 ■ Airs: Sundays at 7pm ■ What’s It All About? The CW is bringing back the classic 1993-95 children’s show, only this time it’s designed for a more adult audience. Plus, talking Mayan head Olmec is back. 17

RETURNING FAVORITES

■ Returns: Sept. 30 at 8pm ■ Where We Left Off: Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) returned to the operating room after a season that showed her fighting with COVID. Otherwise, lots of marriage-y stuff — Owen (Kevin McKidd) proposed to Teddy (Kim Raver) and she said yes; Maggie (Kelly McCreary) and Winston (Anthony Hill) finally tied the knot; and Link (Chris Carmack) popped the question to Amelia (Caterina Scorsone), and they didn’t show her answer onscreen, but we’re pretty sure it’s a no. ■ What To Expect: Meredith Grey is back, baby. After that long stretch of her languishing in a hospital bed (and talking to friends on a beach), she’s on the upswing and will soon return as the surgeon we know and love. We want to know what kind of love is in her future, though. Will she end up with McWidow Hayes (Richard Flood)? Time will tell, especially if the rumors are true and this does end up being the final season.

NEW AMSTERDAM

NBC

■ Returns: Sept. 21 at 9pm ■ Where We Left Off: Max (Ryan Eggold) finally took that wedding ring off and kissed Helen! ■ What To Expect: As we head into Season 4, we reached out to Freema Agyeman (Helen) to get the details on her potential romantic relationship with Max. “I’m excited to see a whole new chapter for Helen! And hopefully some unbridled joy. There has always been a melancholic slant to Helen, I think — she seemed to either be running away from something or in pursuit of something — a little ill at ease,” Agyeman says. “But in Max she feels a sense of home, because they’ve always been so honest and open and supportive and trusting with, and of, each other — the only missing part of the puzzle being admitting their feelings for one another — so now hopefully the quite literal embracing of that will complete their story.” 18

■ Returns: Sept. 2 at 9pm ■ Where We Left Off: Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) rescued Nandor (Kayvan Novak) and his housemates from the trap set by the Vampiric Council, but the heroic actions exposed Guillermo as a vampire slayer. ■ What To Expect: It is a dark time on Staten Island. Nandor, Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), Laszlo (Matt Berry) and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) have been saved, but more assassins are coming for them, and the only one who can protect them is Guillermo. Also this season, the vampires encounter a Siren, gargoyles, wellness cults and the powerful vampire from which all vampires have descended. They’ll also roll the dice at Atlantic City casinos, take in a game of werewolf kickball and celebrate Colin Robinson’s 100th birthday. And Nandor wonders if he’ll ever find true love after having 37 ex-wives.

■ What To Expect: The absence of any one of the aforementioned five leaves a void in talent and name recognition at Studio 8H for Season 47. But SNL has always generated new stars and let them shine brightly, so expect to see big things from the likes of Ego Nwodim, Chloe Fineman and Emmy nominee Bowen Yang.

BLACK-ISH ABC

■ Returns: Midseason ■ Where We Left Off: Boyz II Men serenaded Dre (Anthony Anderson) as he moved up the ranks with a big promotion at the ad agency. ■ What To Expect: The groundbreaking series that challenged viewpoints and sparked meaningful conversations will get a proper sendoff in its eighth and final season. “In this day and age it is rare to get to decide when your show should come to an end, and we are grateful along with ABC to be able to make this final season exactly what we’d hoped for — and to do it with the entire and amazingly stellar cast coming back,” says creator Kenya Barris. 19

■ Returns: Sept. 20 at 7pm ■ Where We Left Off: Last year the new season brought changes for the esteemed series when longtime host Tom Bergeron and cohost Erin Andrews were replaced with Tyra Banks. The season was won by The Bachelor’s Kaitlyn Bristowe and pro Artem Chigvintsev. ■ What To Expect: The series returns for its 30th season, and after last season’s big changes it looks like this one will be a little less hectic. Time will tell what the judging panel will look like, with Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli probably making a return appearance. Last year Len Goodman had to sit out due to the COVID pandemic, and ABC has yet to announce if he’ll return, along with last year’s first-time judge Derek Hough. Also yet to be announced are this year’s crop of contestants, but if past years are any indication, it will be a mix of characters ready to leave it all on the dance floor. 20

Due to the pandemic, production was put on hold for an entire year. ■ What To Expect: This will be a shortened season due to COVID — production only lasted 26 days instead of the usual 39 — but the intense Survivor action fans have been missing for over a year is back! Jeff Probst returns (are those curls on the back of his head?), with Fiji being the host country for the ninth consecutive time. Probst teased that they spent an entire year creating a much more dangerous game and said fans could consider it perhaps a 2.0 version or a dawn of a new era. “Survivor 41 is like the monster in a horror movie, and if you’re a player, it’s coming for you,” Probst says. “So either you devour the monster or the monster will devour you.” No matter what it entails, fans everywhere are just happy to get their favorite show back!
