A FALL TV SEASON ON

STRIKE

If you thought TV these days was already confusing, well, get ready for some crazy new lineups as networks get creative to deliver an entertaining schedule this fall amid a full Hollywood shutdown.

What Is Happening With These Strikes?

Well, to put it simply, American television production, at least for scripted series, is basically at a standstill. On May 2, the Writers Guild of America, which represents 16,500 screenwriters, went on strike over payment negotiations. Then in mid July, actors in the SAGAFTRA union, which is actually two unions, the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, joined the Writers Guild strike. So that means writers are not writing and actors are not promoting any shows or films that were completed before the strike began, and in many cases are not acting either.

What Are Actors And Writers Fighting Over?

There are a lot of issues — too many to outline

here — but, basically, writers and actors want better pay and job security. With streaming becoming so popular, the entire process of payment has been flipped over on its head, because streamers don’t pay out the same way as broadcast shows. “A lot of people think the strike is about Tom Cruise or Harrison Ford, but it’s mostly for the one who serves them coffee or says, ‘10 seconds until the bomb goes off!’” one actor explained to us. “It’s about the working-class actor whose job doesn’t pay the bills anymore.”

Artificial Intelligence Fears

Ironically, after who knows how many films Hollywood has put out about robots taking over, the writers strike is also about robots taking over. One of the problems presented during

negotiations was the use of AI (artificial intelligence) to help facilitate script writing. Naturally, screenwriters are worried about potentially getting replaced by these robots in the future, and they want a say in where AI can (and cannot) claim creative authority. Actors have similar fears. As if our world was not already too close to a sci-fi movie, there’s also talk of capturing the essence of actors and using their likeness in perpetuity; this brings up a lot of logistical and moral questions, as well as payment issues. How much do you a pay a person for their “likeness”? It’s all very gray area, and Hollywood is at the forefront of these very modern complications.

How Does This Impact Audiences?

Audiences may not see the full brunt of this until 2024, since some shows and films were finished before the strike, but there will definitely be way less new content this season. SNL has been off-air since mid April, and late-night shows and some daytime talk shows haven’t aired new episodes since the strike began. News and reality TV are not impacted, so be prepared to see

much more of that than usual; same with shows from abroad. The highly anticipated Season 2 of Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon is still in production, as its primary cast is based out of the U.K. and is therefore in a different union. A lot of Canadian comedies are migrating south for fall, especially on The CW. We’re not entirely sure what will happen moving forward. This is the first time both actors and writers have been on strike since the 1960s! If studios and unions don’t come to an agreement soon, it could mean very long delays before you see your favorite shows returning.

How Does This Impact Hollywood?

Studios can’t have content without writers or actors, nor can writers and actors do much without studios. The trickle-down impact is vast. With everything shut down, that means entire crews are out of work, too: grips, production assistants, makeup, costume design — everything. Everyone involved in this strike — including audiences — will suffer temporarily, but hopefully an agreement will be made soon that will satisfy both sides.

THE IRRATIONAL

● Premieres: Sept. 25

● Airs: Mondays at 9pm

● Who’s In It? Jesse L. Martin, Maahra Hill, Travina Springer, Molly Kunz, Arash DeMaxi

● What’s It All About? We all can relate to the premise this procedural is set around — people being irrational, but being predictably so, like being more afraid of flying than driving when we all know driving is far more dangerous. Law & Order’s Jesse L. Martin plays Alec Mercer, a world-renowned professor of behavioral science, who is “deeply intrigued” by human nature. We “repeatedly and predictably make the wrong decisions” in many aspects of our lives, relying solely on instinct, and almost always are wrong (sometimes “dangerously wrong”). He’s a negotiator. He’s an investigator. He’s a badass with battle burns over 60% of his body who bombs around in a cherry red Volkswagen Karmann Ghia eager to learn more and help the FBI with their highstakes cases.

● What’s It All About? Ryan Murphy’s horror anthology series returns for its 12th chapter of terror. Since 2011, the series has taken viewers to a creepy asylum, a coven of witches, a traveling freak

show, a haunted hotel and the apocalypse itself. Only photos give a glimpse at what possibly could be next (a mechanical spider over a pregnant woman?). Part 1 of the 12th installment airs this fall, with the second part expected next year.

● What’s It All About? Shanola Hampton (Shameless) stars in and produces this drama, which also features Greg Berlanti (Dawson’s Creek, The CW’s Arrowverse shows) as an executive producer. In any given year, more than 600,000 people are reported missing in the United States, with roughly half of them people of color the country seems to forget about. Hampton plays public relations specialist Gabi Mosely, who was once herself one of those forgotten ones. She and her crisis management team now make sure there is always someone looking out for these missing people, but unbeknownst to anyone, this everyday hero is hiding a chilling secret of her own. The series also stars Kelli Williams, Brett Dalton, Arlen Escarpeta and Karan Oberoi.

Sullivan’s Crossing

● Premieres: Oct. 4

● Airs: Wednesdays at 7pm

● Who’s In It? Scott Patterson, Chad Michael Murray, Morgan Kohan

● What’s It All About? Based on the book series by New York Times bestselling author Robyn Carr, this Canadian family drama follows a neurosurgeon named Maggie Sullivan who returns to her rural Nova Scotian hometown to reconnect with her estranged father, Sully (Gilmore Girls’ Scott Patterson), after a scandal blows up her life in Boston. As Maggie works to clear her name and reputation, she is forced to confront her past, while managing potential feelings for Sullivan’s Crossing newcomer Cal (played by fellow CW and Gilmore Girls alum Chad Michael Murray).

FX Fargo

● Returns: Fall

● Where We Left Off: Featuring Chris Rock and Jason Schwartzman, Season 4 followed two crime syndicates vying for control in 1950s Kansas City, Missouri. Like most seasons, a lot of characters died. However, since every season is a self-contained story, it won’t be relevant.

● What To Expect: Set in the Midwest in 2019, the fifth installment of Noah Hawley’s crime drama follows a typical Midwestern housewife, played by Juno Temple, who finds herself in hot water with the authorities. Joining Temple is another star-studded cast, including Jon Hamm, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Dave Foley.

The Spencer Sisters

● Premieres: Oct. 4

● Airs: Wednesdays at 8pm

● Who’s In It? Lea Thompson, Stacey Farber, Thomas Antony Olajide

● What’s It All About? This lighthearted Canadian comedy/drama features a former police officer named Darby (Stacey Farber) and her estranged mother (Caroline in the City’s Lea Thompson), a mystery novelist, who decide to work together as partners in a private detective agency, despite having very different temperaments and some palpable disdain for one another. As the two women, often mistaken for sisters, begin to investigate crimes in their hometown of Alder Bluffs, they also begin to mend their fractured relationship.

The Swarm

● Premieres: Sept. 12

● Airs: Tuesdays at 8pm

THE CW

● Who’s In It? Cécile de France, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Jack Greenlees, Lydia Wilson, Krista Kosonen

● What’s It All About? From Game of Thrones’ producer Frank Doelger, this big-budget sci-fi series based on the bestselling novel by German author Frank Schätzing follows a group of scientists and military personnel across the globe as a new worldwide threat emerges from an unlikely source: the water. As swarms of mussels impede large vessels, millions of strange worms suddenly appear at the bottom of the North Sea, and boats are demolished by ferocious whales, those in power must uncover how these events are connected and what is causing them, or face the destruction of all humankind.

● What’s It All About? When Taylor Sheridan’s TV juggernaut first made its debut on Paramount Network in 2018, one of the network’s first scripted shows, you knew it was something special. CBS will air the series starting from the beginning (the series is currently in its fifth and final season), telling the story of Montana rancher John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) mission to hold on to the land that multiple generations have held before him. And he has to do that with a very dysfunctional family that has made him vulnerable.

“John can’t deal with the morality outside the ranch, but on the ranch, he decides the morality. That can be harsh, it can be biblical, it can be whatever it is. ‘I don’t care how other people do things, but on my land, it’s done this way,’” Costner told us about his character. Sheridan’s story of modern-day ranching and the issues that go with it — land use, water rights, the pressures on the people who have the land to keep it

and the pressure that people who want it are putting on them — is what attracted Costner to the series. The Dutton family struggle is one of heartbreak, violence, love and politics.

“There’s people that fight for ‘God and country’ and there’s people that fight for the land that they actually live on. If you’ve ever fought for the land and the people on it — where you sleep, where you feed yourself — you feel the difference. I’m not saying one’s better than the other, but this guy’s fighting for his way of life and his property against a lot of forces. Tricky ones,” Costner added. “And he’s got one foot in one century and the other foot in another. It’s a convoluted world that he’s having to operate in right now — rules and regulations on his own land. Should a person be able to do whatever they want on a piece of property? There’s arguments that could be made both ways, not to the detriment of other people, not to the detriment of the environment.”

The show has made household names out of the supporting cast that includes Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton, Cole Hauser as Rip Wheeler, Wes Bentley as Jamie Dutton and Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton.

When Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) hopped on his motorcycle and said his farewells to Carol (Melissa McBride) and the rest of his surviving friends at the end of The Walking Dead’s 11-season run, the last place we would have expected him to show up was in a convent — and in France. How we got there and what this progressive religious group is all about appears to be just as mysterious to him.

“I imagine those characters are going to meet back up at some point,” Reedus says of Daryl and Carol. But for now, he’s going to be meeting up with all sorts of new characters and struggles.

Things change when he meets Tim Laughlin (Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey), a young man brimming with idealism and religious faith. JFK: One Day In America

Nat Geo Kennedy History

● Premieres: November

● What Are They All

About? Nov. 22, 2023, marks the 60th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. These two gripping docuseries look back at that national tragedy.

Nat Geo’s JFK: One Day in America marks the start of its new One Day In… anthology docuseries franchise. The three-part series weaves together never-before-seen archival elements, along with new and archival interviews with some of the last surviving eyewitnesses, to offer what it says will be a “definitive” look at that tragic day in Dallas.

History’s Kennedy follows the network’s previous acclaimed docuseries about U.S. presidents, such as the recent FDR. Narrated by Peter Coyote, each episode draws from archival footage, photography and audio recordings, as well as nearly 100 new interviews, to chronicle the life and legacy of our 35th president.

This ripped-fromthe-headlines true-crime original is executive produced by and stars Luke Macfarlane (Brothers & Sisters) as a man who called himself the “Amish Stud” and plotted with his mistress to murder his wife in a conservative Amish community. “We realized pretty soon that renting and sourcing these costumes was going to be very difficult

because the Amish have so many rules about their clothes and you couldn’t just walk into a store and buy them,” shares Jaden Devine, costume designer. “Luke’s shirt was really important to make right because the Amish don’t allow buttons, only hooks and bars. We wanted it to have a very romantic look, almost like an old romance novel cover. … [And Luke] didn’t want his outfit to look like an SNL skit.” The film is based on the book A Killing in Amish Country: Sex, Betrayal, and a ColdBlooded Murder by bestselling authors Gregg Olsen and Rebecca Morris.

● Airs: Thursdays at 8pm & 8:30pm

● Who’s In It? Charlotte Ritchie, Kiell SmithBynoe, Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard, Ben Willbond, Lolly Adefope

● What’s It All About? The BBC comedy that inspired the hit CBS series will debut the week after Buddy Games has finished its first season. Ghosts premiered on BBC One in 2019 and has aired four seasons there, with a fifth and final season on the way. Many of the cast members previously worked together on other series, and they were looking for a new project when the idea for Ghosts materialized. “Something clicked and we realized the boredom of eternity and the existential aspects of the ghosts idea was unique. The stories could be really petty!” says Mathew Baynton, who plays the ghost of melodramatic poet Thomas Thorne. Laurence Rickard, who plays the spirit of caveman Robin, says, “All of those house-share sitcoms contain people that are in a situation they are stuck in. Ghosts is the ultimate version of that: They are stuck together for hundreds of years and none of them can leave.” Other ghosts inhabiting Button House are Georgian-era noblewoman Kitty (Lolly Adefope), disgraced politician Julian (Simon Farnaby), former Button House lady of the manor Fanny (Martha Howe-Douglas), polite scout leader Pat (Jim Howick), closeted World War II Army officer Captain (Ben Willbond) and 17th century witch-burning victim Mary (Katy Wix). Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike Cooper (Kiell Smith-Bynoe) are the mortal couple who inherit Button House and have to find a way to live with their spectral housemates. — Ryan A. Berenz

● Premieres: Sneak preview

Sept. 24 at 7pm

● Airs: Sundays at 7:30pm

● Who’s In It? Voices of Richard Ayoade, Hannah Waddingham, Matt Berry, Pam Murphy, Duncan Trussell

● What’s It All About? Seems like Dan Harmon’s (Rick and Morty) animated comedy series has been in the works for millennia. It was supposed to have a sneak peek in November 2022 and then join the midseason lineup, but FOX

delayed it until this fall. Set in mythical ancient Greece, a family of humans, gods and monsters tries to see if everyone can live together in a “city.” Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd) voices Tyrannis, the narcissistic king of Krapopolis, who holds council meetings to address problems like loitering Medusas. His mother, Deliria (Ted Lasso’s Hannah Waddingham), is the shape-shifting goddess of self-destruction and questionable choices who loves being worshiped by mortals. “Our

entire family tree is trunk!” she says. Tyrannis’ father is deadbeat Shlub (Matt Berry), a hard-drinking centaur/ manticore hybrid who considers himself the life of the orgy. Halfcyclops warrior Stupendous (Pam Murphy) is Tyrannis’ half sister, and Hippocampus (Duncan Trussell) is the freakish walking fish offspring of Shlub and a mermaid. FOX has great faith in Krapopolis: The network has already ordered Seasons 2 and 3.

● What’s It All About? The CW picked up the six-episode first season of this sinfully clever British comedy about the hyperreligious Lewis family and their preparations for the impending end of days. Simon Bird (The Inbetweeners) plays patriarch David, who has a terrible haircut, a deep longing to ascend the church hierarchy and covetous feelings toward the woman on the Sun-Maid

raisins box. His wife, Fiona (Kate O’Flynn), believes that “women will be fulfilled by making the home their work.” She hasn’t found fulfillment yet, but she’s only been at it for 17 years. Their teenage daughter, Rachel (Amy James-Kelly), is an excellent student at school but is failing at her mission to seek converts. Son Aaron (Harry Connor) is sincerely devoted to the church and a gifted artist who depicts his family being tormented in hell and his father being consumed in a bathtub of acid. —

High Potential

Kaitlin Olson (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) stars in this genre-bending crime dramedy based on the French series HPI: Haut Potentiel Intellectuel (high intellectual potential). ● What’s It All About? ABC’s senior version of The Bachelor is banking on their leading man Gerry Turner, a 71-year-old widow and grandpa, to launch its newest spinoff aimed to showcase a whole new kind of love story — one for the golden years. Who doesn’t want to see a happy ever after for this sweet soul? Turner, a retired restaurateur from Indiana, is described as a “doting father and grandfather.” He was married for 43 years to his high school sweetheart, Toni, who passed away in 2017, just six weeks after she retired. “I have her picture on a dresser in my closet. Every morning, I give her the nod, ‘So what do you think about this?’” Turner says. “For a while, it was like I was having a hard time figuring out if she would be OK. But we always told each other, when one of us goes, we want the other one to be happy.” Now, thanks to his successful audition reel that boasted “He doesn’t have gray hair; he has ‘wisdom highlights’” and “Florida wants to retire and move to him,” fans will follow his story as the hopeless romantic gives love a second chance.

SURVIVOR

● Returns: Sept. 27 at 7pm

● Where We Left Off: No one saw Carolyn coming, but — wow! — did she make the season fun. The finale was a tear-jerker as Yam Yam helped his young friend Carson with his fire-making skills, a kind gesture that could have cost him the million, but the always-uplifting 36-year-old from Puerto Rico took home the money and our hearts.

● What To Expect: We got host Jeff Probst to give us the details on Survivor’s 45th season.

What will we see more of with the new 90-minute format?

Jeff Probst: We have been pitching CBS to let us try a season of 90-minute episodes for a few years now because we felt it was a sweet spot for us in terms of length. With 60-minute episodes, we always have to leave so much great material out of the episode. Ninety minutes allows us to show a lot more of the fun reality that goes on at tribe camps, the conversations I have with players before a challenge, and longer player interviews. We are also adding more game-related layers with more journeys, more risk/reward games, more rewards, things like that. I think fans are really going to enjoy it.

Bruce Perreault, who had that head injury in last season’s first episode, is back. Why was it important to give him another shot? We’re really happy that Bruce was able to come back! We don’t really see him as a returning player, as much as someone who is back to play for essentially the first time. He was injured 15 minutes into Day One, and it was downhill from there. I think everyone agreed it was very unfulfilling for him and for the fans. We knew we wanted Bruce back even as we were evacuating him to get medical care; that’s how big an impact he made on us. We’re grateful he said yes, and hopefully he’ll last longer than one day!

What can you tell us about the Survivor auction returning? Yeah baby! The Survivor auction is back! We love the auction; we just felt it needed a refresh in order for it to have the kind of impact we need from it. So we gave it a break for a few years and then decided to dive in and brainstorm some ideas. We came up with a new approach that we really think is fun, and the players seemed to enjoy it too! Can’t wait for our audience to see it play out! Going, going, sold!

We hate to keep asking, but when are you doing another all-star season? We love returning-player seasons as much as the fans do! It’s really just a matter of always taking a big-picture view of where the show is and where we want to take it next. I think fans agree that we’ve met some amazing new players since our rebirth with Survivor 41. We will for sure be doing another returning-player season, and then the difficult decision will be who we bring back. There are already so many fantastic second-chance stories! — Barb Oates

The Amazing Race CBS

● Returns: Sept. 27 at 8:30pm

● Where We Left Off: Season 34 introduced the Scramble and eliminated non-elimination legs. The series ended in Nashville with Big Brother’s Derek and Claire claiming victory.

● What To Expect: Season 35 takes us to several countries and dozens of cities, across thousands of miles, and to a brand-new location. Host Phil Keoghan is back and shares with us some further details.

What can we expect with the new 90-minute format

— what will we see more of?

Phil Keoghan: Race fans love learning about new and different places, so what excites me is that with 90 minutes we have more time to add context to where we are and why we are having teams do a particular challenge. We can let the show breathe more. Early on in the season, we are always challenged with having so many teams generating so much great content that editing everything down into a commercial hour is not always easy. Expect to learn more about where we are and enjoy more of our award-winning cinematography.

Will we see any new locations in your 35th season?

Yes, a brand-new location, Slovenia! Its capital city, Ljubljana, is recognized as the greenest capital in Europe, the Tree City of the World, a world-class destination for gliding and spelunking … AND where you’ll find the highest number of beekeepers, per capita, in the world. The weather couldn’t have been better, and many contestants said it was a season favorite!

What can you tease about the new batch of teams?

I love that we are always inspired and surprised by the new teams we chose for each new season. … We have married couples, best friends, brothers, college roommates, an engaged couple, father and daughter, competitive sisters, high school sweethearts, childhood buddies, military best friends, father and son, mother and daughter, and siblings. It’s a diverse group with lots of humor mixed with extreme competitiveness. — Barb

Snake Oil

● Premieres: Sept. 27

● Airs: Wednesdays at 8pm

● What’s It All About? This new game show with a devious name is hosted and executive produced by SNL alum David Spade (Arrested Development alum Will Arnett is also an EP on the show). Here contestants are pitched unique products by convincing entrepreneurs — some of whom are showcasing real business ventures, while the others are “snake oil salesmen” whose products are fake. Guest celebrity advisers help contestants, as they need to determine which products are real and which are a sham for a chance to win “life-changing money.” In each round, contestants choose a pair of entrepreneurs and learn about their extremely unique (and often bizarre) products through visuals, a custom-made infomercial exclusively produced for Snake Oil, and by quizzing the business representative themselves. “When FOX asked me to host their new show, I was flattered,” Spade said. “But then they told me it was about a shady snake oil salesman, and I was a little less flattered to be the guy who immediately comes to mind.”

The Gold

NEW ORIGINAL SERIES

● Available: Sept. 17 (First 2 Episodes); New Episodes

Sundays

● Who’s In It?

Hugh Bonneville, Jack Lowden, Dominic Cooper, Charlotte Spencer, Tom Cullen

● What’s It All About? This British miniseries is inspired by the real-life events that took place on Nov. 26, 1983, when six armed men broke into the Brink’s-Mat security depot near London’s Heathrow Airport and inadvertently stumbled across gold bullion worth 26 million pounds. What started as “a typical Old Kent Road armed robbery,” according to detectives at the time, became a seminal event in British criminal history, remarkable not only for the scale of the theft — at the time the biggest in world history — but also for its wider legacy. The disposal of the bullion caused the birth of largescale international money laundering, provided the dirty money that helped fuel the London Docklands property boom, united blue- and white-collar criminals, and left controversy and murder in its wake.
