ASK AN

EXPERT

With Kiki Berg 20 Years Answering Your Money Questions

Spring is upon us and savvy homeowners like you want to update the kitchen, add outdoor deck, pay off credit debts or kids school tuitions. You may have a mortgage coming up for RENEWAL this spring! What a fantastic opportunity to review both your mortgage and other nancial debts while considering your mortgage options such as REFINANCE, RENEW, or SWITCH to another Bank for better rates.

Q: I got my renewal from my Bank and the rate is much higher than I expected. What can I do? A: In todays “stress test” mortgage market, your Bank will poke into your credit to see how you are managing money and if they see lower scores, high debt loads or late payments, to compensate for perceived risk they may offer you a higher rate. Don’t accept that offer without consulting a licensed mortgage professional, who can either negotiate for you or simply switch you to another lender with better rates.

Q: Can I reenance if I am self employed? I heard that it’s impossible to qualify for a mortgage because we declare lower income. A: Yes, there are mortgage options that are well suited to self employed entrepreneurs like you. One of my personal favourites is the Manulife ONE product (I have it for my mortgage). The Manulife ONE mortgage is a Home Equity Line of Credit. It offers the flexibility of interest only mortgage payments during low cash flow periods while also reaping the benefit of higher principal paydowns when cashflows are good and accessing your home equity when you need it. You control your mortgage! Manulife One is massively popular with teachers, nurses and self-employed people.

Q:

Can I put all my credit debts into my mortgage payment?

Yes, as long as you have 20% equity. Bonus...it will can lower your overall monthly payments by hundreds of dollars per month.

ASK THE EXPERT... Dr. Marcy Q: Why is good posture important for my health? A: Good posture not only makes you look friendly and more confident, it also delivers increased energy, better breathing, easier digestion, improved circulation, and less wear and tear on your joints. It’s an investment in both your appearance and your health. The secret to good posture is maintaining the spine’s natural curves. If your spine is not properly aligned, your muscles and ligaments have to work harder to keep you upright and this can result in strain and pain. Q: Can I visit Dr. Marcy for chiropractic care during my pregnancy? A: Yes, the adjustment and care is modified to meet your unique needs during each stage of pregnancy. Often the adjustment is performed with an instrument. Theadjustments do not involve any twisting of your back or neck during this time in your life. Q: Can I benefit from chiropractic care if I am not in pain? A: Pain in your back is definitely an indication that something is wrong, especially if the pain is chronic and stops you from doing everyday chores and activities. But you don’t always feel pain in your back when there is a problem. Restricted movement or discomfort in your arms, legs and shoulders are also indications that you would benefit from a chiropractic assessment. Q: What is a good form of exercise to correct and strengthen my posture? A: I love Barre class! In fact, I have seen such amazing results in my patients who go to Barre that I teach it! Barre is a low impact workout that utilizes precise movements to correct your posture, create lean arms and strong glutes. This class is suitable for all levels. No experience is needed so come join me in a class! Q: Does the clinic direct bill? A: Yes, all of our practitioners at Cheam Wellness direct bill. We are also ICBC approved. Dr. Marcy has 20 years experience providing chiropractic care to families. She uses a gentle technique that can be done by hand or with an instrument. Dr. Marcy helps people of all ages from babies to seniors and during pregnancy. She is Webster Certified.

Gallery 7 Theatre Stages Francis Hodgson Burnett’s Classic Story, The Secret Garden, A Musical for the Family To celebrate the arrival of spring, Gallery 7 Theatre is thrilled to be staging the Tony Award-winning musical based on the Francis Hodgson Burnett children’s novel, The Secret Garden. With music by Lucy Simon and book and lyrics by Marsha Norman, this poignant and entertaining musical will play at the Abbotsford Arts Centre March 27 through April 4th. Orphaned in India, young Mary Lennox journeys back to England to live with her reclusive and embittered Uncle Archibald and his invalid son, Colin. Struggling to come to terms with her new life at Misselthwaite Manor, with its ghostly hallways and vast moors, Mary discovers a secret garden hidden away and abandoned on the estate. A story of healing, forgiveness and renewal emerges as Mary dedicates herself to restoring the garden to its former glory and forges new friendships with an eclectic mix of colourful characters along the way. Winner of the 1991 Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical, this powerful story will warm the heart and refresh the spirit.

faithful adaptation of the much beloved children’s classic, but it’s a story that speaks to adults as well. The music is absolutely beautiful with its sweeping melodies, toe-tapping ditties, and moving lyrics. The show takes us through an emotional journey that culminates in what I think will be a very uplifting, soul-satisfying and rewarding theatre experience. You won’t want to miss it!’

‘We’re really thrilled to bring this Broadway musical to our stage,’ explains Gallery 7 Theatre’s Executive/Artistic Director, Ken Hildebrandt. “The show is a

March: Be careful this month of rushing forward and cutting corners it is only going to do you harm. April: If you are single and tired of it, don’t feel down. You’re oozing charm and sex appeal these days and could meet the most wonderful person this month. VIRGO (August 23 - September 22)

GARDEN VIEW

This month – Hardy Annuals Hardy annuals: the name is an oxymoron. Hardy plants are supposed to be able to survive the winter aren’t they, but annuals, by their definition, don’t. In fact, the names hardy, half-hardy and tender, when applied to annuals, refer to the relative cold tolerance of the newly planted seeds. Hardy annual seeds can handle being frozen in the soil so are ideal for planting outside, either in the autumn or now. Productive, adaptable and cheap, they are the ideal credit-crunch plants. They are also easy-to-grow, so are brilliant for beginner gardeners. For best results sow them as thinly as possible, cover lightly with sifted soil then firm it down. Protect them from cats and birds with netting until the seedlings are well established then thin them out to the distance recommended on the packet. Good flowers for the annual-novice include

poppy, calendula, larkspur, fried- egg plants (limnanthes), love-in-the-mist, clarkia and cornflowers. If I could grow only one it would be Nigella damascena (love-in-the-mist). It’s an old cottage-garden plant and ‘Miss Jekyll’ is a beautiful, soft, pure blue variety with the added bonus of stripy seed pods once the flowers have faded. The king of the hardy annuals though has to be the sunflower. Children particularly love to grow them. Sow them singly in small pots or directly into the earth. If you sow them directly, plant two seeds into each hole and thin to one once they are established. They may need to be staked as they grow. There are some terrific varieties. A favourite of mine is Prado Red, which as the name suggests, produces deep red flowers. If you pinch them out, they‘ll grow to five feet and produce numerous blooms on each plant. If sunflowers are the kings of the hardy annuals, then sweet peas are surely the

fragrant queens. Old-fashioned or antique varieties tend to be best for scent though their flowers are slightly smaller. The great thing about sweet peas is that you have to pick them to prolong flowering so you have a wonderful excuse to have a fragrant home all summer long. Sweet peas should be planted a little deeper than other annuals. They are very thirsty flowers. My granddad used to line his sweet pea trenches with lots of wet newspaper. He won prizes for his blooms, so he obviously knew a thing or two about it. Next time you’re at the garden centre... walk right on by the showy (and expensive) potted plants and head for the seed section. For a very small outlay you can add colour, shape, interest and completely transform your plot ...and if you don’t like it, you can always change it again next year.

Happy gardening!
