Everyone wants to stay healthy as we age. We make good lifestyle choices including eating a balanced diet, exercise and try our best to get plenty of sleep. Do you know that keeping a healthy back is also important in the aging process? Q. How do I know if I have a healthy back? You answer YES to the following statements. 1. You can perform daily activities with good posture easily and naturally without tension. Ask your massage therapist if your postural muscles are too tight. 2. You move without soreness or limitations and get out of bed with full mobility. 3. You naturally take a full breath without lifting your shoulders. 4. You are maintaining your flexibility as you age with a simple routine. Q. What can I do for a healthier back? 1. Be posture-conscious when sitting, standing, and even sleeping. 2. Build core strength – that means the muscles in your abdomen, back and legs. 3. Stay well-hydrated so the discs in your spine can do their job to protect your back. 4. Practise good nutrition for healthy bones and muscles, and to prevent osteoporosis. 5. Take care of your back before it hurts! A lack of pain does not mean everything is working properly. Q. How can Dr. Marcy help me? A spinal assessment is a good investment in your health. As part of your chiropractic care, you get a customized plan that includes stretches, exercises as well as lifestyle tips to keep your back healthy and prevent more serious problems in the future. Try a Barre, Yoga or TAPfit class! Barre and yoga develop your core, improve flexibility and correct your posture. TAPfit keeps your brain and balance sharp! I pay close attention to your alignment during class and offer corrections if needed. This will ensure that you are getting the best results from your hard work. Book your assessment today!

Q: I have recently had a change to my employment and have investments through work. How do I learn what my options are?

A:

Many positions and careers have a group pension or group RRSP plan that comes with an options package. This package can be accessed come the time you either quit, are laid off, change positions within the company or retire. Your pension or group RRSP provider will give you a package with instructions to help you understand your options and in most cases allow you to transfer your portfolio. At this time you will be able to transfer funds to a personal account that you then have options to and in some cases can be withdrawn or used as apart of your personalized financial plan.

Q: Wanting to save/invest is a great start but do you know your FIN Number?

A:

There is never a bad time to save & invest for your future. Having a goal you are saving for is that much more of an incentive to stay on track and one way to stay on track is to establishing a defined financial goal better know as your Financial Independence Number (FIN). This is a number that is the starting point for all of my clients and is based off of the net worth goal by retirement and the amount of monthly income needed in retirement to fund the quality of life you want in your later years. Starting your plan with the end in mind is the best way to plan. This involves calculating and growing the sources of income in retirement over the years and a licensed financial advisor is a key piece to that equation working in your favour.

COVID-19 & Your Mortgage According to the Canadian Bankers Association, nearly 600,000 Canadians had so far been approved for some form of mortgage deferral assistance. Lenders and the Governments have rolled out many programs to assist homeowners with options. Q: Will deferring your mortgage affect qualifying for a refinance or switch? A: Yes, many lenders will not allow you to refinance or switch to another lender until you are paying your mortgage and not on the deferral program anymore. Q: Will deferring your mortgage affect your credit? A: No, lenders are not reporting your mortgage as “late”. I do recommend getting a copy of your credit report from Equifax to double check and dispute if needed.

We assist you in qualifying for refinance to pay off debts, move to another lender for a better rate, new mortgage for your vacation property or new home and can get you back on track with debt issues. With over a decade helping families have financially successful goals and generally we don’t cost you a penny! We are paid by the your Bank.

COVID-19’s Impact on the Fraser Valley Market One of the questions Realtors get asked the most is of course, how is the market? Many factors contribute to the answering of this question. For example, what market? What time of year? And most recently, how COVID-19 has impacted where the market has turned.

The Real Estate market has, like most of the world, highly changed over the past six to eight weeks. However, according to the Fraser Valley Real Estate board, as of May 25, 2020 the market has increased by 46% more than the same day in April and currently about 23 families are requiring Realtor services daily. Chris Shields, the President of the FVREB explained it perfectly when he said that housing needs don’t stop during a pandemic, which is why Realtors were considered an essential service. The way Realtors conduct their business has changed drastically and may never return. Here is a list of the ways Realtors have changed their business to protect their clients. • Virtual Open Houses • Doubling the Volume of Listing photo’s on Realtor.ca • Digital Communication • Live Streaming • E-transactions and documents • Disinfecting Realtor/Client High Touch Surfaces • The Use of Masks and Gloves • Asking Homeowners to Turn on Lights and Open Windows Despite these changes, the market continues to go strong, and with these changes in place, the protection of our clients is our priority. WHAT’S ON!

GARDEN VIEW This month – Black-eyed Susan You might not know its name, but you are probably familiar with the Rudbeckia. A late summer perennial daisy. It’s sometimes called Coneflower or Black-eyed Susan.

Rudbeckia ‘Golden compass’ produces masses of classic bright yellow and black Rudbeckia flowers on a bushy plant. It grows up to 70cm in height and can be grown from seed as a half-hardy annual or a short-lived hardy perennial.

It flowers from early August to late September and I find it a valuable addition to the late summer garden. It does particularly well in full sun in rich, well-drained soil. You can sow them as annuals indoors in spring to set out after frost or plant as perennials in spring or autumn. Divide every 3 to 4 years and deadhead to avoid self-seeding, though personally I see self-seeding as a bonus trait in a plant! Mildew can be an issue on the foliage but can be avoided if you don’t overcrowd the plants. Watch the young foliage because slugs and snails find it tasty. Once the plants are established this isn’t a problem.

Rudbeckia fulgida is the classic ‘Black-eyed Susan’, with sunfloweryellow flowers and a very black central cone. It does better in damper ground than many of the varieties so choose this one if your garden is less well-drained.

By Rachael Leverton

I love Rudbeckia ‘Prairie glow’. It is a stunning plant and good for adding height as it grows to 1.5m. Its huge 6cm diameter flowers have warm orange petals with yellow tips. Rudbeckia ‘Irish eyes’ is a more unusual variety with a yellowish rather than brown cone, as well as yellow florets. It repeat flowers from July through to October.

If your soil is on the dry side, try Rudbeckia fulgida ‘Deamii’. It produces shining, golden flowers with jet-black cones from early September to late October and into November. It has slightly smaller flowers, but they are lovely, and abundant. Rudbeckias naturally grow in dry savannahs, grassland prairies and in the glades of rocky upland forests across North America but they have become a much-loved bushy stalwart of the herbaceous border and will delight from late summer right through the autumn.

Happy gardening!

A GOOD READ Call the Midwife – Jennifer Worth If, whilst the covid-19 restrictions have been on, you’ve been re-watching the entire wonderful British series Call the Midwife, you might want to take the time to read the books on which it’s based. Jennifer Worth’s bestselling memoirs recall stories of life, birth and death in London’s East End during the 1950’s. It opens as Jennifer – then fresh-faced young Jenny Lee – arrives at Nonnatus House, a community of nuns who provide midwifery and district nursing for the close-knit families of the dockers of Poplar, and follows her as she lives and learns amongst them. Jenny is an honest and sympathetic narrator, quick to point out her own failings. The nuns, from calm, steady Sister Julienne to mischievous Sister Monica Joan are characterised beautifully, and Jenny’s fellow midwives are a memorable bunch. But it is the people of the East End who burst from the pages – from terrified runaways to hardy mothers of four (and even twenty

four!), from seedy pimps to rough and ready dockers, all are described so vividly that they practically step out to meet you. The backdrop is almost a character in itself. As the book progresses, the reader begins to understand something of the history of the area – bombed heavily during the war, it has not recovered by the time Jenny arrives, and many families are caught in limbo, unable to do anything about their appalling living conditions. This element is explored in further detail in the subsequent volumes of the trilogy, particularly in ‘Shadows of the Workhouse’. And, of course, there are the birth stories. Every birth is different, and the book contains comic, tragic and poignant experiences. Worth balances human interest and medical detail deftly, never talking down to the reader but never baffling them with complex terminology, as she guides us through the emotions as well as the

The Hunger Games We’ve watched all the Hunger Games films again during the restrictions! They are a great lead-in to the books which if possible, paint an even more vivid picture. Collins’ dystopian vision of Panem is even more sinister on the page. This land, which was once America, is now divided into twelve districts, controlled by the Capitol and subjugated both by hunger and by the yearly tradition of ‘reaping’ one boy and one girl from each area to fight to the death in a televised theatre of cruelty. In order to save her sister from this fate, Katniss Everdeen steps forward to take her place. Instantly her life changes

technicalities. For anyone with an interest in birth, midwifery, social history or just a good story, this is a must read.

as she is taken first to the Capitol for a series of rituals, and then thrust into the Games themselves. To complicate matters further, she must decide whether her fellow ‘tribute’ from District 12, Peeta, can be trusted or whether he must be sacrificed in order for Katniss to save herself. This was the novel that turned my reluctant teenage reader into one who stayed up well into the small hours to finish it. And like all the best fantasy writing, it allows us to reflect on our own world, and how we treat others. No bad thing right now. By Katherine Gillespie

SAFE FUN IN THE AMAZING SUN! GREAT SUN TIPS FROM THE SKIN EXPERTS AT ELEGANCE MD CLINICAL SKINCARE

Warm breezes and sunny skies...ahhh summer is in the air. After a long winter and the COVID lockdown our bodies, minds and souls are craving the warmth that is upon us. Maybe you are planning some local travel? While we all love spending time outdoors in wonderful weather, we must always remember to protect our bodies as well as our skin during hotter months and travels. Here are some fantastic tips to get you through the heat and beyond: Be sure to stay hydrated when enjoying activities outside in hotter weather. By the time you feel thirsty,

your body is already dehydrated. Drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water each day (and more when you’re especially active in warmer weather) will ensure that your body and brain will get the water they need to function properly, and your skin will look amazing. Wear a hat and sunglasses. Since we know that sun exposure causes dreaded skin damage such as: deeper wrinkles, dry blotchy skin, broken capillaries (spider veins), unsightly age spots (brown spots) and even worse various forms of skin

cancer, it’s very important that you wear protective covering and limit your time outdoors during peak sun hours. Use sunscreen daily. Using a dermatologist grade, high zinc oxide SPF 50 sunscreen every time you are outdoors will protect your skin, especially during times of prolonged exposure to the sun’s harmful rays. It will help keep your skin looking healthier and younger much, much longer. Want to be the youngest looking person in your posy? Then a good

sunscreen is a must! Another question we get asked a lot is “Should I wear my sunscreen when it is overcast?” We always advise a strong yes if you will be outside for an activity, ie a walk, a soccer game, etc. We have had clients that have gotten severe burns on their face and top of their head during an outdoor soccer game in very overcast conditions. Always fully remove your sunscreen at night. To avoid clogging pores it is necessary to keep a good evening skincare routine of washing off debris and sunscreen from your face and body before sleeping. Put on your favourite calming or anti-aging serums and moisturizers and wake up looking refreshed and rejuvenated.

Vitamin C Serum Tips While Vitamin C in your daily serum has amazing benefits for your skin, using it prior to sun exposure increases your sun sensitivity and therefore MUST be followed with a good sunscreen. But here’s the clincher: when used together with a good sunscreen it actually boosts the effects of your sunscreen. Alternatively using your Vitamin C serum after sun exposure, ie during your evening skincare routine, has wonderful anti-inflammatory benefits, stimulates collagen production and helps reduce brown spots. It is a resounding Morning and Evening recommendation from us on this youth enhancing serum. To Pretan or Not to Pretan? This one gets a resounding NO. Pre-tanning does not lessen your chances of getting a sunburn while on vacation,

or anytime for that matter. It definitely does increase your risk of melanoma. Instead just use a great sunscreen. Yes you will get a sun kiss while using a good sunscreen, just not a burn or worse. Following the sun-care tips above are your best bet for looking and feeling amazing on vacation and beyond!
