SUN'S OUT, BUNS OUT !

Make your backyard an oasis with a bit of elbow grease. A few landscaping projects go a long way, and will transform your yard into a whole new space! Here are a couple ideas to kickstart your summer in the sun. If you want to add a touch of class and distinction to your outdoor landscape, paving is a hard choice to beat. Patios, walls, walkways – paving has it covered! Paving equals chic in any landscaping context, whether to create a new patio, an alfresco dining area, a relaxation area near a spa or pool, flower borders or a parking area. Good planning is the key to making the most of paving’s potentials. Choose your pavers carefully for the type of look you want to create. The least expensive and the most enduringly popular slabs are the classic white squares made of concrete. Patio slabs are an ideal solution for

covering a large surface with reasonably priced, good quality material. Another option are classic pavers. Uniform pavers, all the same size and shape, come in a wide range of shapes and colours. They can be used to achieve plain, linear designs as well as elaborate geometric patterns. Experiment with the colours of the pavers to enrich the overall effect. After a long day’s work, it’s time to kick back and do some barbecuing! From your classic Weber barbecue to the new-age Big Green Egg, we carry it all. With a new sale event on almost every weekend, it’s prime time to pick up your favourite new backyard appliance. Tie the whole look together and complete your revamped backyard with some barbecue blocks, the perfect accent, and finishing touch to your space.

Kampai! Cheers Mission! After years of dreaming and planning, and months of speculation, Yosuke and I are finally ready to start a new adventure in Japan. We will be staying north of Tokyo, in Akita, close to Yosuke’s family. We have many ideas and opportunities have already started to present themselves to keep us busy in Japan. We are both nervously excited to begin the new adventure that life takes us on, whatever it may be.

Mission part of what makes Mission great! I especially want to give credit and thanks to Jane Marshall (Founder of What’s On! Mission) and Brock Rodgers & Ken Brookes (Owners of The Stage) for being courageous pioneers and supporters of building Inclusive Communities. I look forward to seeing all our friends at The Stage over the coming weeks and invite everyone to join us for one final Kampai at The Stage on Saturday, June 30th, when we will also announce the details of our new Vlog where you can follow us on all of our adventures!

Thank-you to everyone that supported my efforts over the past 5 years to build Inclusive and Safe Communities with Exciting and Unique Events & Entertainment Opportunities in our own Vibrant and Welcoming Downtown Core. I Mata ne! See You Again Soon Mission! am honoured to have had the opportunity to work with so many wonderful friends, community organizations, artists & entertainers, businesses and fabulously talented individuals who have helped Former Owner What's On! Mission & General to make both The Stage & What’s On! Manager of The Stage

$130,000 Annual MACL service costs not paid by government funding

Each year, Mission Association for Community Living (MACL) provides support to 450 children and adults, through programs that are considered essential services for their families. We provide facilities, equipment, transportation, education and support staff necessary for people with disabilities to attend childcare programs, live, play and work in their home community of Mission.

As our costs are not always covered by our government funders, we rely on community support through donations and fundraising efforts. Every donation, whatever the amount, remains in Mission. To learn more about MACL, visit us at www.missionacl.org and follow us on Facebook.

Mission Sports Council and you supporting Kidsport, so all kids can play regardless of ďŹ nancial ability!!

Mission Sports Stars Here in Mission we have sports stars that are making an impact. They are tireless workers, unselfish, goal oriented and unpaid. They are the executives, coaches, officials and volunteers that make the sports organizations in Mission some of the best in British Columbia. Countless hours are spent organizing, brainstorming, practice planning, game scheduling, strategizing and hands on skill developing the athletes in their sport. Mission Sports Council salutes and thanks each and every one of these community minded people for their dedication to the youth and adults involved in the full range of sports in Mission. Ten minutes now, or endless arguments in the years to come Mission Sports Council has sent a request for participant information to all sports in Mission. Very few have responded. No data equals no communication to Council. There is a Master Plan being developed by Mission Parks Recreation & Culture that will determine the priorities for the next 10 to 15 years. It is imperative that Mission Sports Council has as much data available to present to the Master Plan committee so we can advocate for the needs of sport going forward. With the growth of our community Mission Sports Council is a voice that can advocate for facilities that will be needed to make this a complete community The facility may be a new rink, softball field, soccer pitch, gym, recreation centre or dry land practice facility. We need hotels so we can grow Sport Tourism whereby the entire community benefits from tournament attendees spending their money in Mission not surrounding areas because that’s where they are staying. Encourage your sport to become a vital part of the Mission Sport Council and to respond to the request for data. It is in every sports interest to present as many facts to council as possible so we do not hear the lament later of “well we asked and you didn’t respond so we didn’t put it in the plan.

MISSION REGIONAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ADVOCACY

CONNECTIONS

125 YEARS OF SUPPORTING BUSINESS IN MISSION

The Great Mission Land Sale

elebrating its 125th birthday in 2018, the Mission City and District Board of Trade was created by Harry Brown French in 1893. The newly created Board of Trade immediately took out advertisements in all newspapers within a 300 mile radius, offering a package of free land, free water, free power, property tax exemptions and, most extraordinary of all, the Board also offered to construct factories, mills or other commercial buildings for potential industrialists at no cost whatsoever! A local hub for business, your Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce consists of a team of business professionals dedicated to growing our community through three key pillars: advocacy, benefits and connections. 2018 marks 125 of representing businesses in Mission, and we are celebrating! The Chamber has provided many memorable community events, such as: the Business Excellence Awards, the Soapbox Derby, the Bald Eagle Festival, and the Fraser Valley Trade Show. As the second oldest Chamber in BC, we are proud to share our success with our members and the community. This year, we have combined our Member Appreciation, Chili Cook-Off, and Anniversary celebrations all into one spectacular day! Join us for an afternoon filled with fun, games, and laughter as we show our appreciation for Mission's continued support of the Chamber.

JUNE 19 - 125TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION Enter as a Chili Master with your team or attend as a taste tester. This event is free for all to attend! Come for games, activities, prizes, and get to know more about your Chamber. Where: Mission Chamber Picnic Lawn 34033 Lougheed Hwy Time: 11:30 am - 2:30 pm

Elizabeth Ellis was born in Vancouver, attended King Edward High School, and throughout her life has had a gratifying and productive career in a plethora of positions. Liz believes that education should be life- long and so continues to explore new avenues, embracing technology to enhance her creative abilities in her pursuit and passion for the arts and digital media. Learning new techniques and methods to enhance her photography, expressing words though the beauty of her calligraphy, and pursuing other community and artistic endeavors, Liz has found a new energy and a renewed passion for life, attending courses and programs in-between her other pursuits. Liz is a mother of two sons and three grandchildren. She lives in Mission, BC. For two decades, Liz has been engaged in presenting her artistic expressions in several mediums. Her proud association with 3 Crows Productions and their unique public awareness storytelling of the residential school experience has influenced her life profoundly. Her calligraphy of the “legendary” Bobby Orr Letter hangs on the wall of Don Cherry Sports Grill and a framed copy gifted to PM Steven Harper. A specially commissioned work also hangs at Harvard University. Liz volunteers her calligraphy skill to the Mission Hospital Auxillary. She touches the lives of many people in her volunteer circles and understands well the nuances of the human condition.
