Home Maintenance Tips Replace Furnace Filter
Store Yard Equipment
The air filter in your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) unit needs to be replaced every 1-3 months to keep the air in your home clean and the system running efficiently. Remember to write the date on the new filter so you know when to change it next time.
Prepare your yard equipment for storage. This includes draining fuel from all gas-operated equipment such as lawn mowers, leaf blowers, and chain saws. Also, clean all the grass and leaves from your trimmers, mowers and rakes now so you don’t have to deal with rotten material in the spring.
Disconnect and drain Exterior Hoses
Prepare your Deck
Now is the time to disconnect and drain any hoses that are stored outside. Hoses left attached and full of water can be ruined if the water freezes expands and splits the hose
Clean porch and deck furniture, and look for any needed repairs. Cover and store outdoor furniture and barbecues in a protected area. Make sure all soil is emptied from pots and planters. Dirt left in clay pots will freeze and cause the pots to crack if left outside.
Shut off water to outside taps The same thing that can happen to your hose can happen to your pipes. It is a good idea to shut off the valve that controls the flow to your outside tap. This valve is usually located inside your house. Once this valve is shut off open the outside tap to drain any water.
Insulate water heater Check to see if your hot water heater has an R-value of at least 24. Choose a tank insulator that is the right for the size of your tank, and follow the instructions to install. This quick project could save you 4 to 9% in water heating costs, paying for itself in about a year.
Buy Snow removal Gear This is a great time to stock up on snow removal gear and de-icers. Once the snow falls everyone rushes to buy salt and shovels. Get yours now, beat the rush and be prepared for that winter morning when your car is stuck in the driveway.
Clean Gutters The leaves should be mostly gone now, so clean out your gutters and keep water flowing freely away from your house.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE As the weather begins to change and another year comes to a close, I cannot help but to be amazed at how much goes on in our community each and every year. To say that there is ‘nothing to do’ or that ‘nothing ever happens in Mission’ is to speak an untruth There are so many wonderful events and activities that occur on a regular basis that it is nearly impossible to keep up with and attend everything going on. That is why we at What’s On! Mission work so hard to stay connected with the organizations, businesses, and individuals who put enormous amounts of time and energy in to producing so many rich and vibrant activities for us all to enjoy. We are proud to be Mission’s go-to resource for events, entertainment, and business - we cannot forget the dozens of businesses that ensure we can continue publishing What’s On! Magazine thro remember to take the time to acknowledge the local businesses that you saw it in What’s On! and let them know how much we appreciate their support of our engaged and happening community. On behalf of everyone at What’s On! Mission, I would like to wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and All the Best for 2017!

FVAD student Marin (age 14) as Sugar Plum Fairy in Nutcracker 2015. Marin now trains full-time at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School
E
stablishing a true winter tradition in Mission, Artistic Director John C. Carney returns with the Fraser Valley Academy of Dance for its ninth season to the Clarke Theatre on December 3, 2016, to present his choreography of the Nutcracker ballet. Having danced many roles in the Nutcracker with English National Ballet every winter season in London during his many years with the company, Mr. Carney brings an in-depth professional knowledge of this full-length classical ballet to this local stage. Over 100 students from his Academy will perform alongside professional guest artists including Mission actress Shelley Janze as Mrs. Stahlbaum and performing artist Justin Reist as the infamous King Rat.
Join the Stahlbaums' festive party and follow Clara into her dream to witness the magical battle between Soldiers and Rats. Travel along with the mysterious Drosselmeyer through Snowflakes and across the serene Ocean to the Kingdom of Sweets to meet the Nutcracker Prince and the Sugar Plum Fairy. Be enchanted by the colourful and exciting dances of the Candy Canes, Flowers, Arabian, Spanish, Chinese, Smarties and Russian accompanied by Tchaikovsky's imaginative score. All the family will enjoy the magic of this traditional winter classic! For more information on the Academy or the Nutcracker, please visit fvad.ca or call 604-826-0097 Special one-hour performances for School Groups, Friday, Dec 2

Thinking Real Estate? Talk to Tom.
Uncommon Tips for Making Your Home Show Better Most people know the basics of preparing a home for a viewing or an open house. But there are a number of lesser-known tips — tips you often don’t hear about — that can make your home even more attractive and desirable to potential buyers. In the kitchen, for example, it’s obvious that the stove, sink, and countertops should be spotless. But, did you know that grinding a lemon just before a viewing will help eliminate any lingering odours? You should also arrange the contents of your cabinets and refrigerator to all face forward. In the bathrooms, make sure the toilet lids are closed. Hang matching towel sets. Moving onto the bedrooms check that nothing is lying around. Even a shirt draped
neatly over a chair can appear messy to some people. In the kids’ rooms, the toys should be “staged”, not just flung around. If possible, move half the contents of all closets into storage. This makes a big difference in how spacious they’ll appear. And here’s another uncommon tip, house plants look their best — brighter, more upright and alive — approximately four hours after you water them. All these tips take just minutes to implement, but they can make a big difference in how your home shows. Studies prove that a well prepped home will often sell faster, and for a higher price, so it’s worth the effort.
Season Greetings! During this holiday season, take the time to enjoy the simple things in life. May this time of year bring you holiday cheer and that peace, happiness and prosperity be yours today and throughout the New Year! NEW! Online home evaluation at www.homevaluesinmission.com

Jonathan Fowler Law Corporation Wills & Estates | Personal Injury | Real Estate WILLS
Who will look after your children if you don’t have a Will? Many parents don’t realize that without a properly appointed guardian, through a legal Will, your minor children could end up in the custody of the Public Guardian and Trustee or the Minister of Children and Family Development. Further without a legal Will appointing an executor of your estate someone will need to be appointed for you by either the Public Guardian and Trustee or by the courts before anything can be distributed.
ESTATE PLANNING, POWER OF ATTORNEY & HEALTHCARE REPRESENTATION AGREEMENTS.
Estate planning is more than having a Will to make sure your family is looked after. It is also about ensuring you have someone you trust with the authority to help you make financial and healthcare decisions when it becomes too difficult to do on your own. Having a properly appointed attorney and representative can help make your life easier when you need it the most and protect you from being taken advantage of.
PERSONAL INJURY / AUTO ACCIDENTS
Don’t Wreck Your Injury Claim! Being in a car accident can be a very shocking and chaotic experience. Not only do you have to deal with the shock and trauma involved, but if you’re injured, you will also likely need to deal with the insurance companies, your employer and healthcare providers on the road to recovery. Before you sign any documents or attempt to make any settlements please call me first for a no pressure evaluation to discuss your potential claim. At Jonathan Fowler Law Corporation, I take your matter personally to ensure you get the proper help and guidance you need throughout your injury claim.
REAL ESTATE
Thinking of Buying or Selling? Let me make sure your closing goes according to plan! For most people, the purchase of sale of a home will be one of the largest transactions you make in your life. Consulting a Real Estate Lawyer can help ensure your transaction goes ahead without complications. Call Jonathan Fowler Law Corporation today to review your purchase and sale agreement and to ensure there are no unexpected complications as you move forward.

It has been consistently communicated to the District of Mission by homeowners and many local businesses and institutions (industry, hospital, education facilities) that improvements to our telecommunications infrastructure was required. In line with this and the District’s commitment to
and businesses will have direct access to light speed internet connectivity, rapidly increasing upload and download times and providing reliable internet connections and improved cell phone reception. Local businesses will have enough bandwidth to move large volumes of data, which will create efficiencies and allow them to compete in the local and global marketplace.
The initial public consultation for the Official Community Plan (OCP) saw the Downtown highlighted by many residents as an historic treasure to be celebrated. The recently announced $3.5M upgrade to the downtown streetscape is designed to improve the pedestrian environment and create a safer and more attractive experience. The enhancements, which are scheduled for construction in 2018, will include a moderate widening of the sidewalk to incorporate a decorative strip, an increase in the bumpouts at intersections to
improve pedestrian safety, new litterbins, bike racks, benches, bollards, more trees with the introduction of new tree grates, new street lights with banner polls and hanging basket brackets (complete with irrigation) and parking lane painting. This recent announcement has already paid dividends as investment inquiries have increased and use of the downtown façade improvement program has had several recent applications come to fruition, the latest being awarded to the new home of Decode Escape Rooms. In all, these recent announcements add to the positive momentum associated with our development potential and the renewal of our downtown core – the heart of our community.

Mission Sports Council and you supporting Kidsport, so all kids can play regardless of financial ability!!
What’s On Magazine and Mission Sports Council present
FUN SPORT FACTS If you know these facts you’re amazing!!
FEATURED SPORTS THIS ISSUE; BASEBALL KARATE, SOCCER AND SOFTBALL
Baseball; find the Mission Minor Baseball ad to find the answers.
LTAD is good for your child!!
The first baseball rule book was printed in what year? What was the name of the first professional baseball team? How many defensive players are on the field at one time? How many single stitches hold a baseball cover on? How many countries belong to the International Baseball Federation?
The Long Term Athlete Development model is based on science, research and decades of experience. This model confirms that kids will get active, stay active and even reach the greatest heights of sport achievement if they do the right thing at the right time. Please consider the points below to guide your child’s sport involvement.
Karate; find the Mission Isshin-Ryo Karate Do ad to find the answers. Karate originated on which Japanese island? What is the name for Okinawan weaponry? What three cities formed the basis for Karate styles? What was karate called before it was called karate? What is the name of the “Father of Modern Karate”?
Girls up to 8 and boys up to 9 years old should develop fundamental movement skills . Agility , Balance, Coordination and Speed are skills that should be developed in a fun and challenging multisport environment .
Soccer; find the Mission Minor Soccer ad to find the answers. The foundation of modern soccer was established in what year? Soccer was banned in England in 1365 for what reason? Governing body FIFA was established in what year? What is the name of the world championship of soccer? Name the most often acknowledged greatest scorer of all time?
Girls 9-11 and boys 10 –12 years old should be converting their fundamental movement skills into fundamental sport skills. Known as the “Golden Age of Learning” it may be tempting to specialize at this age through excessive single sport training, or early position specialization in team sports. This should be avoided at these ages..
Softball; find the Mission Minor Softball ad to find the answers. What date was the first softball game played? What was used as a ball in the first game played? In what year were the rules of modern soft ball established? What is the highest season batting average in NCAA Division 1 play? How many stitches hold an 11 inch softball cover on?
As a parent you want to do the right thing by involving your child in sports. Acknowledged as an excellent teacher of social skills, competitive skills, sportsmanship and leadership ability, sport can be a positive impact in your child’s life. To give your child the best chance to acquire these positive benefits please get your child involved in the sport of their choice, leave the coaching to the coaches, be a cheerleader for your child win or lose, appreciate good play by all competitors, respect the sport’s officials and leave every sport activity with one question directed at your child; “Did you have fun today?” Then listen!
Girls 12-15 and boys 13-16 are ready to consolidate their basic sport specific skills and focus on fitness development to develop an athletes long term potential. See www.canadiansportforlife.ca for more information
Win or lose, if your child has fun and learns something they can use next year they will return to their sport with enthusiasm into adulthood.

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT 18-35
Who do I call? At City Hall HOW TO DEAL WITH COMMON ISSUES IN & AROUND TOWN Quick Tips from Mission's Young Adult Engagement Committee
Let's talk. Facebook is great for a lot of things, and if you see something that bothers you around our community it's super easy to snap a pic and share it online – But what if you wanted to actually fix the issue? Here are quick tips we've gathered from staff across the District to help you get in touch with the right people, right away.
What should I do if I see something like garbage, vandalism, broken playground equipment or a syringe in a park?
A: If it's garbage and you can pick it up safely be awesome and toss it in a trash can. If you don't feel comfortable doing that call Parks, Recreation & Culture at 604-820-5350 & give staff the park name, description of the area, and what needs to be addressed
Who do I call if I see a stray dog in a park or around town?
A: Call the FVRD Animal Control CARE centre at 1-844495-CARE. They're available six days a week, Monday to Saturday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. For emergency issues or to report a dog attack after hours call the RCMP.
What does my Leisure Pass let me do?
Good question! Your leisure pass gets you access to the entire Leisure Centre including swimming, gym, skating, racquetball and squash courts as well as all drop in classes. Awesome.
A tree fell across some powerlines!
I need more garbage stickers – where do I go?
A: You can get stickers for extra garbage at Municipal Hall & the Leisure Centre for $3.50 per sticker. If you produce more waste because of a medical condition or have two or more children under the age of three call or email Engineering at 604-820-3736 / engineering@mission.ca
I'm worried about traffic in my neighbourhood. How do I get someone to look into what can be done to make it safe?
A: Email engineering at engineering@mission.ca with your concerns and the location. The Mission Traffic Committee meets every second month to look at exactly these issues. Be sure to include your contact info if you want a response back.
There's a tree down or a streetlight is out. Who do I call?
A: Call the 24-hour Public Works number at 604-820-3761.
My sewer backed up or my house is flooding. Who do I call?
Call the 24-hour Public Works number at 604-820-3761. Our crews can come and shut off your city services to prevent further damage.
Stay back at least 15 meters and call 911.

“It is the only place that I can truly be myself.“
The Fraser Valley Youth Society (FVYS) operating in the Fraser Valley started in 2000 as a grass roots organization and became a not for profit society in 2006.
“I come for the people... and for the support.”
Our mission is to build and maintain networks and opportunities for learning, support and expression among, around and about queer and questioning youth in the Fraser Valley.
We run weekly dropin groups in the communities of Abbotsford, Chilliwack and Mission. We facilitate at least one workshop and one group discussion each month. Topics include; Sexual and Gender Identity; Body Positivity; Safe Spaces and Community Engagement; Healthy Relationships; and any other topics relevant “It feels inclusive.” to what LGBTQ+ youth are facing in the Fraser Valley. Youth Activities: • YAC - Youth Advisory Council (Lead by youth) and weekly Drop-ins • Fraser Valley Pride • Vancouver Pride, Surrey Pride, Queer Prom and Camp Out • Special Events, fundraising and fieldtrips • Community connections • Staff and Youth Youth Engaged for Sustainable Healthcare (YESH) We provide opportunities for personal growth and leadership through our YESH program. The
60
YESH program is designed to be a leadership initiative of its own. Members become part of the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) and meet with their colleagues to brainstorm, plan and then implement their ideas on how to create safe, supportive, and healthy spaces and relationships with others in the community. A big thank you to our departing Program Coordinators, Jennifer Conway-Brown and Ray Covenant for all your hard work and dedication to our organization and especially our youth. We would like to welcome our new Program Coordinators. Simon Thorogood joined us in June and is facilitating the Abbotsford and Chilliwack drop-ins. Pierre Richez joined us in September and is facilitating the Mission dropin. Please email info.fvys@gmail.com for information on where to purchase or check us out online at https://www.facebook.com/ fraservalleyyouth/

Jimmy D Lane If you like electric blues similar to Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan or Jeff Healey, you will love Jimmy D Lane. Jimmy comes from a long family tradition of blues music – the reknowned Jimmy Rogers was his father. Growing up, Jimmy D got to sit by, listen and watch many of the great musicians we still listen to today - Howlin’ Wolf, Albert King, Willie Mabon, Little Walter and Muddy Waters, to name a few. He picked up his first guitar at eight and there’s been no looking back. Throughout the 1990’s he played with and toured with his father. In 1995 Jimmy D decided it was time to go out on his own. Originally from Chicago, Jimmy now resides in Canada. The Chicago Blues Hall of Fame inducted him in April 2013, recognizing him for his contributions and for all the well-known musicians he’s played with. He is a gentle soul known for his “It’s All Good” retort. His voice soothes the soul, his music comes from the heart and once you see him play, you will not forget him because he’s an artist that reaches out and touches something within.
