Mission Christmas Bureau NEEDS YOUR HELP!

The Mission Christmas Bureau has been helping families in need in our community for over 40 years. Last year 711 hampers were given to over 1600 people in Mission.

The cost to put together each hamper is approximately $70 - $200 which is raised through donations from the community, businesses, and fundraisers.

Economic Development Office Moving to Downtown!

Mission’s recently announced Technical Centre of Excellence (TCE) will share space with a District of Mission neighbour.

As Economic Development Officer (EDO), I was excited to learn about the plan to move the economic development office to the downtown core. The intent is to begin moving into the space in mid-December.

Locating the Economic Development Office downtown places further emphasis and commitment on the District’s downtown revitalization efforts. And having a District presence downtown brings a host of other benefits as well.

As mentioned in the previous What’s On! Mission article, the 11,000 square foot facility is currently being upgraded to house the TCE and its venture acceleration program funded through provincial support. Along with the TCE and its start-up businesses will be an established technology association to mentor and provide commercialization support. Combined with a private high tech company presence, these additions will initially bring approximately 30 well- paying jobs to the downtown core.

Having the Economic Development Office under the same roof draws further attention to a sector that will play such a critical role in Mission’s economy. It will also improve visibility and access to the services offered by the EDO, and it aligns perfectly with future plans for a downtown post-secondary education facility.

The mostly vacant former supermarket building is poised to become a substantial economic driver for Mission. The tech centre, operated by the non-profit organization SRCTec, will take up a portion of the building to deliver its commercialization programs and educational services. The balance of the north

side of the building will house the private high tech anchor tenant. The economic development office will be located in the former coffee shop area on the south side and will have room to accommodate additional municipal presence in the future.

The decision to move the economic development office emphasizes the fact that the District of Mission is very serious about improving the downtown core.

With 30 new jobs and the increased potential to attract new high tech employers, the combined presence of the municipality, SRCTec and other private firms within this facility will reinforce the work being done to achieve the 10 Big Steps in the MissionCity Downtown Action Plan.

My name is Roger Racine. I am the biggest skeptic. I need to talk to people first hand and see the results on them before I jump into a situation. My sister-in-law had 6 Photon Genius light therapy sessions at FUEL, in Mission, and she feels fantastic! Recipes from The Blackberry Kitchen

Back by Popular Demand!

We have had so many requests for the Blackberry Kitchen’s famous scone recipe that we are bringing it to you once again...

This was the original recipe when The Blackberry Kitchen first opened in 1986!

Heritage Scones Makes 12 scones.

Ingredients 2 cups flour 3 teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon baking soda 3 teaspoons sugar ½ teaspoon salt ¼ cup butter 1 cup buttermilk

Directions Place all dry ingredients in a bowl, stir to mix together.

Cut or shred butter into small pieces and add to dry mix.

Rub to mix.

Add the buttermilk slowly.

Mix by hand to bind all ingredients together.

Knead lightly about 10-12 times.

Divide in half.

Shape each half into a ball and then roll out to 8” diameter.

Cut each circle into 6 wedges like a pie, separate and bake at 450 degrees until light brown.

Serve with Devonshire Cream and Blackberry Jam.

Every year Opening Nite Theatre puts on four major shows, and every December and January, they put on their annual Christmas Panto. A Panto is an old British tradition, wherein an old fairy tale is retold through popular music, cross-dressing and slapstick humour. This year it’s Alice in PantoLand, and when Alice goes down the rabbit hole, she’ll be serenaded by the Gryphon and the Mock Turtle, bamboozled by the Mad Hatter, and will find herself on trial in front of the crazy Queen of Hearts (played by the ever fantastic Gerwyn Mills). In every Panto the show is overseen by the hilarious fairies Fairy Nice (played by Jennie Bice) and Fairy Naughty (played by Susan Dearing). Sisters with a serious case of sibling rivalry, they travel through time and space to interfere with fairy tales every Christmas. It’s great fun for the whole family, and the theatre is situated right downtown across from the West Coast Express Station.

Alice in PantoLand runs December 12-21, 2014 and January 2-11, 2015. Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm, Sundays at 2pm. Tickets are available online at www.openingnitetheatre.com, at ontstickets@ hotmail.com or by phone at 604-826-ONTS. The theatre is at 33223 Railway Ave in Mission.

Being an event planner, I am always trying to raise the bar with each event that we produce - especially when the event we are planning is my own birthday! This year, we hosted a big ole drag show at The Stage in Mission on my birthday. It was a very successful event with glamourous entertainment and a packed house filled with a lively crowd. No birthday party is complete without a cake and being that this birthday party was also a DRAG Show, I knew we needed to bring in a professional to build us the perfect glam cake.

Meet my friend Maureen Dunbar. I met Maureen when she and I were both employed with the same financial institution right here in Mission. Maureen and I clicked right away and it is no wonder that neither of us are working for the bank any longer - Maureen is one of the most creative people I know which is why I was so excited when she announced on Facebook some time ago that she was starting her own cake decorating business. She began to post photos of beautiful cakes that she had designed and created - wedding cakes, birthday cakes, kid’s cakes - all very beautiful and very well done. I knew that Maureen was the perfect person to create my birthday DRAG Show glam cake! And boy did she ever! Check it out…

Friends and family have challenged me over the years to make bigger and better cakes, more extravagant parties and to share my creations. So I accepted!!!

This also allows me to get to know you a bit better in order to deliver the best product and create your ultimate vision. I enjoy reading comments online and seeing people’s faces when they first see their special cake. It makes me happy to make others happy!

MISSION WILL MISS YOU VAL! I first met Valerie Hundert on November 11th, 1999. It was Remembrance Day and it was an election year.

I had decided to throw my hat in the ring and was a candidate for city council. We were at the Remembrance Day ceremonies at the Legion. Immediately following the ceremonies, a lady named Valerie came right over to me; I did not know who she was but she was definitely purposeful in her approach to meet me. She told me that her name was Valerie and that she worked at the Park, she didn’t say which Park, but I knew I was supposed to know. Valerie told me that she thought it would be a good idea if I called her after the election and that she would show me what I needed to do to get involved in the community. My life changed that day and it is because of Valerie that I am doing what I am doing today.

Soon after the election, I met with Valerie. She told me that she thought it would be a good opportunity for me to join the board of the Mission Heritage Association.

I did not know what it meant to ‘be on the board’ but it sounded exciting and I felt that if Val suggested it must be a good idea. That began my love for Fraser River Heritage Park, the Park of course, and my career as a community volunteer. I spent 3 wonderful years on the board of the Mission Heritage Association and earned my stripes as a community volunteer at the Park working with Valerie, Barbara Fuhrman, and others to make events like Canada Day, the Twilight Concert Series, Friday on the Fraser, the Rose Garden Tea, and many others happen for the community to enjoy. Val loved the Park and she dedicated thousands of hours to making it the heart of our community, a gathering place where everyone could enjoy the spectacular scenery. I was proud to be part of creating a legacy for our community and even more proud to work with and for Val, for it was her vision and her belief in the vision of her friend Norma Kenney that inspired me to fall in love with the Park, the Blackberry Kitchen, and spending summer evenings in the most beautiful place in the Fraser Valley.

Over the past 15 years, I watched as Val made her mark in Mission. I worked with her on a number of community projects, boards, and committees. Some of my favorite memories are of our time working on various political campaigns. I shared Val’s love of politics and we spent many hours discussing and debating issues and evaluating candidates

- of course she was always able to persuade me to agree with her view of how things should be.

Over the years, I watched in awe as she spent her time dedicated to our community… the Mission Heritage Association, the Mission Historical Society, the Mission Arts Council, the Mission Artists Association, the Earnest Jacobsen Rose Garden, Paths and Pathfinders, Heritage Week, local riding associations for the BC Liberals, the Liberal Party of Canada, and others. It is difficult to go far in our community without seeing Valerie’s influence. She was passionate about Mission and about making it a wonderful place to be.

Val taught me many things over the years, but the one thing that will never leave me, is how much Val loved a hand written note. I can’t count the number of times I received a card or short hand written note from Val in the mail - always at just the right time - with an encouraging word, letting me know she was thinking of me. Those notes meant so much and I will miss receiving them from her. The last note she sent me is still on my fridge… she congratulated me on my awards with What’s On! Mission, thanked me for sponsoring the Rose Garden Tea, and told me she valued my friendship. I will cherish this note forever.

All the scientific research is pointing towards one thing: meditation is extremely good for you. If you want to get healthy by reducing stress, anxiety, depression or negativity, meditation is a fantastic place to start. Here are 5 reasons why I love meditation:

Reduce anxiety ~ I’ve been anxious since I was a child and meditation has been extremely helpful in helping me manage my anxiety level. If I take time to meditate every day I’m WAY less anxious and when I miss a few days of meditation I can feel my anxiety start to creep up again.

Get CLEAR ~ Should I get a new job? Go on a vacation? Go back to school? There are always lots of decisions to be made and sometimes it can be really confusing to find the answers. When you meditate you create the space to get clear on what you REALLY want out of life.

LET GO ~ Sometimes life is tough, relationships deteriorate, marriages break up, people get angry and it’s easy to get stuck in negative thought patterns. It’s easy to say “just let it go” but it’s much harder to do. Meditation is the “How to” process of letting go. When you sit down to meditate start with an intention “I’m ready to let this go” it might take a while but it’s a great place to start.

Increase Focus & Concentration ~ Life is busy and there are so many distractions out there – if you have an iphone I’m guessing it’s a bit of a distraction for you! The good news is concentration can be a learned skill and meditation is the perfect way to practice your concentration skills.

Mission HOSPICE SOCIETY Mission Hospice Society volunteers are members of the community who have taken special training and who bring a richness of life experiences, special skills and compassion to their volunteering. One great gift the Mission Hospice Society volunteer brings is the gift of time. Volunteers do not have to hurry away. They can provide whatever appropriate support is needed to help make life better for patients and their families and friends during a time that is often stressful and difficult.

Mission Hospice Society volunteers who have direct contact with patients and families are prepared for their role through a 30 hour training course conducted by Mission Hospice Society staff, professional team members and experienced volunteers.

Training includes the philosophy of hospice, palliative care, listening and communication skills, death and dying, comfort measures, grief and loss, community resources, and role of the Hospice volunteer and other team members.

We have just celebrated our 2nd annual Culture Days in Mission, the last week-end of September. The Mission Cultural Resources Commission (CRC) is the community contact for this national initiative, now in its 5th year. We make connections between individuals and groups, help promote and support existing events and foster new initiatives. For example the Mission Farmers Market collaborated with the Mission Community Archives to create AgriCulture – a pictorial display of Mission’s agricultural heritage. Mission Adopt-A-Block, CRC, Mission Arts Council, and FV Watersheds Coalition worked together on the 2nd Mission Rivers Day Celebration at the Mission Harbour and Xá:ytem Interpretive Longhouse opened its doors for tours. We know how much arts and culture enrich the social fabric of the community and how cultural industries have a huge role to play in economic development. “The creative sector -- a $4-billion industry in B.C. employing some 85,000 people -- includes all self-employed individuals, profit, non-profit and public enterprises including incorporated and unincorporated businesses that produce, create, distribute or conserve cultural and artistic goods and services”, (UBC study figures from 2010). The CRC has just completed a forum I Love Mission inviting community groups and individuals to a conversation on Mission’s future as a “Creative City”! Mission Muse Awards Nominations Open!

The Mission Muse Awards take place during BC Arts & Culture Week • Wednesday, April 22, 2014 The Mission Cultural Resources Commission (CRC) is currently seeking nominations for the Mission Muse Awards. Coordinated by the CRC, the awards honour both individuals or groups and also those that support, advocate and educate on behalf of arts and culture.

The Muse Awards categories for individuals/groups /emerging artists include: Music, Visual, Performing and Literary Arts. In addition there are categories for Arts Advocate Muse Awards for business, organization, individual and educator. Anyone, even the artist themselves, can make a nomination in one or all categories. Deadline for submissions is Feb. 27, 2015.
